A’s go to Streit, Park, Witt and Okposo

Per Katie Strang, the selections were made by team vote – not by Garth Snow and Scott Gordon.

And that’s how it should be.

  2. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

I was content with either him or Streit. I really wonder if Kyle is that much of a leader in the locker room to get one over Hunter.

  3. avatar Ray says:

I can definitely accept that. Hell if that’s what the players want, then who am I to argue.

  4. avatar NickyL says:

Can’t be upset at this. The team voted on it. Interesting way to do it.

  5. avatar Kevin says:

I hope this won’t prevent him from being traded at the deadline. Don’t like the move but if its from the players I am ok with it. No excuses from the locker room now.

  6. avatar Justin says:

The most interesting part of this is Okposo getting an A after one full NHL season. That bodes well for his future as a potential captain.

  7. avatar LIHockey says:

@kevin .. –it didnt prevent BG from being traded!

  8. avatar Kevin says:

I know but it makes it more unlikely. A captain for a few months doesn’t bode well

  9. avatar Brian says:

I’m really happy Weight got the C, he deserves it.

I doubt it has an impact on him being dealt at the deadline. Snow will act in the best interest of the rebuild.

  10. avatar i4e11 says:

The best interest of the rebuild might be keeping Weight around, FWIW. Everyone is so obsessed with prospects, but you need a strong vet presence to help these kids as well.

  11. avatar akeem says:

Interesting that Weight was voted C and Okposo A, seeing as both didn’t skate with the team for a good portion of training camp…

  12. avatar Brian says:

    Good point post #9.

  13. avatar Chris TMC says:

What I think needs to be considered when comparing BG to DW is that Billy was not chosen and voted Captain by his teammates, while Doug was.

  14. avatar felix says:

while the team voted that is one thing, but i am not too happy about the naming of weight as captain. it should have been streit.

this team needs stability and continuity. streit will be here for the next four years. weigh twill either be dealt in march, or maybe resign. if you have a great deal on the table in march even though he is captain you can not pass that up.

streit should of had the C. enough of these one year captains. no other team does that.

  15. avatar Eric says:

Doug Weight is a great player. The thing is he is a aging player who doesnt have much left in him. But Streit is had four years left in his contract. But I am still happy for Weight.

  16. avatar Steve says:

Great choice to name Doug Weight the captain. He is one of the best players on the team and the oldest.

  17. avatar MattyB says:

Richard Park should have been captain. Cause Richard Park is the man… On a serious note, Colorado and Toronto looked better than last year, so Tampa and Atlanta will be the only other contenders for the 1st pick….If we finish last I won’t be upset, we could use another number 1. Ask Shittsburgh how that went for them

  18. avatar Islander505 says:

If Weight plays more than 30 games this season, I’ll be shocked.

But then again, if we have another season like last year, being Captain of the team on the IR might not be a bad thing.

  19. avatar billy says:

    congrats to weight

but…..didnt it used to be that there was 1 captain and 2 alternates/assistants?

    why are there 4 A’s?

  20. avatar gary9_19_22 says:

    I LOVE THIS!!!!

I watched a show on the history of the Canadiens. The most interesting part was that every year at the end of training camp the players passed a coffee can and voted on who was going to wear the C. It was a big honor to be ELECTED captain and NOT NAMED captain. It didn’t matter if you were captain the previous year or previous 5 years. Every year was a new vote.

We can say all we want but no one knows how 22 guys really feel about who is their leader is except them.

If they elected Park, Witt, or anyone I would be just as happy.

If your worried about continuity then stop watching pro sports in America. Free agency, salary caps, and pay per view took care of that.

  21. avatar Adam says:

4 As? Ridiculous! Why do we always have to make ourselves look like a bunch of fools? My guess is that Gordon and the organization were too afraid of hurting a veteran’s feelings about not getting an A (Witt anyone?). It should have just been streit, park, and weight (in no specific order). Streit is a leader with the most ability, Weight is a leader with the most hockey wisdom, and park is a leader with the most heart.

  22. avatar Yitz says:

Why do I always imagine you talking, CB, when I read Katie’s articles?

  23. avatar moose says:

I’m pretty sure the 4 A’s means it will switch between home and road games. The one year thing kinda sucks while buying a jersey but other than that who cares. You don’t need a letter to be a leader. Everyone needs to watch mighty ducks 3 again.

  24. avatar Jeff Kuntz says:

    Perfect.

I am basically regurgitating (sp?) my previous posted comment on this … but this gives the team flexibility going forward.

If you had gave it to Streit, no one could be captain but him for a few more years. Now, we are flexible and if a certain first over-all pick who doesn’t wear a goalie mask emerges as a leader, then Weight can pass the torch to him seemlessly.

Tavares needs to be the captain of this team sooner rather than later. At that point we will have the “stability” that some asked for with a Streit captaincy.

This was the best result short and long term.

  25. avatar The Real JD says:

Weight has my full support after all how can you not love a guy who is known as a skilled player his entire career now in the twlight of that career is willing to drop the gloves on behalf of his mates numerous times playing out the stretch of a meaningless season. The guy is a born leader and by his actions you can see he is willing to do ANYTHING for his team. The players got it right!

  26. avatar 318J1 says:

i def like that the team decided this! only thing is Hunter shuda had an “A” before K.O.

  27. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

Dougie will proudly serve the team as the captain. Good for him and good for the team.

  28. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

The players have spoken. That’s good enough for me.

  29. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

As I have reasoned … players will gravitate more naturally towards Doug Weight then they would Mark Streit … it’s not a slam against Mark … it’s just that Doug has much more experience in the NHL, has played with a host of other NHL leaders, has been captain himself … and he exudes leadership.

Streit will still be an excellent associate captain… as will Witter and Parky … I was hoping Trent would get one … but seeing an ‘A’ go to one of the young guns to a deserving Okposo amoung the youth corps is also a great gesture.

Question: Where the “A’s” also voted on by the players?

  30. avatar Dooks94 says:

Congratulations Doug. Classy act for a classy player. The players spoke-and this is an excellent move to help our youth grow. Someday Okposo or Tavares will captain this team. But for now this is the right move

  31. avatar Blizzard says:

My pick all along. Also the players voted, I like that. Glad KO got the A. Future captain IMO.

  32. avatar Alex says:

Interesting how the Islanders don’t even have this announcement on their own website. Maybe they should rethink how valuable PB is to them.

  33. avatar avolp55turgeonfichaud says:

Glad to see Weight get the C.. He deserves it. I definitely wanted it to be Mark Streit, but I am happier with it this way. The comments stating that Weight’s NHL experience compared to Streit’s is no question. An A for Streit is a great stepping stone, and also a more appropriate letter for this stage in his career. Also, as mentioned before, Weight being the captain opens the door for a new captain in a year. Who that will be is the more important question, IMO….

cannot effin wait for tomorrow! LETS GO ORANGE AND BLUE!

  34. avatar Jethro09 says:

Four alternates? Why? Home and road alternates? I’m fine with Weight as the Captain, I just hope he plays well enough this year to warrant a contract extension for next season. I’d like to have our captain around for more that a season and avoid musical chairs with appointing captains every year.

  35. avatar Jimmy Sparx says:

The players voted for him so that’s all that counts.

  36. avatar EAF says:

Too bad he will not be playing tomorrow against his friend and former Islanders Captain. Also, I am just wondering if another Islanders captain will be traded at the deadline

  37. avatar Chris TMC says:

Adam (21): What in the world is causing a reaction like this, calling the team fools and ridiculous and getting so angry? Teams switching As for home and road games is quite common and completely normal, tjhere is nothing ridiculous or foolish about it whatsoever.

  38. avatar Willis says:

    I’m very happy with this.

And to the poster who thinks Hunter should get an A before Okposo, please expand on your thoughts for me. I keep coming back to 2 images in my mind. Okposo flying into a scrum in defense of a teammate last year, and Hunter turtling the year before. I’m thinking Okposo deserves the A before Hunter (who I think works real hard and seems like a great person).

  39. avatar Staten Islander says:

4 guys with “A”s? I thought you could only have 2

  40. avatar IslndrCntry says:

I think Weight is a much better choice than Okposo simply for his experience. I also believe Hunter would have been an even better choice because of his many years with the Islanders. He has definitely earned it.
