PITTSBURGH 4, ISLANDERS 3 (SO)
Strongest words yet from Charles Wang

CB on FanHouse on Charles Wang’s response

6:38 pm - Wang’s Fed Up: Charles Wang sounded like a man who’s had it with the Town of Hempstead. He didn’t even have a good take on Kate Murray’s olive branch phone call on Friday, saying he told the Hempstead Supervisor that he didn’t want their conversation to end up in Newsday. Murray called Newsday and told a reporter not just her side of the conversation, but what Wang told her.

The deadline is about to pass, and apparently Wang’s patience is through, too. “Angry, disappointed, some might say disgusted,” he told reporters in a pre-game briefing. I asked him if this is the first time reality has hit him that the Islanders could be playing somewhere other than Nassau County. “It is,” he said, “and that is very sad.” Asked if he would give priority to meetings with an outside municipality over the Town of Hempstead, he acknowledged, “There is time to do both.”

I asked Wang if it’s possible Hempstead Town didn’t take his bluff seriously because he has always gone out of his way to say he wanted to make the Islanders work in Nassau County. “I guess maybe,” he said. “It’s not what I want. But it’s not like they are giving me many choices.”

Also follow on Twitter.

5:55 - Charles Wang to meet with media at 6:15 pm. I’ll have an update soon after. Tom Suozzi confirmed to drop the puck, flanked by Bossy and Trottier. So much for making this one night about Tavares and hockey!

1:30 - Please check out my FanHouse pre-game story with Tavares and Crosby, projected lineups and some notes. Enjoy the game.

Would this happen if there wasn’t big news?

  2. 2 Pnut

Its the deadline day for Wang, could this be good news? please?

  3. 3 MattyB

I doubt it…When is it ever good news with us Islander Fans

  4. 4 Brett Sherman

I doubt there’s good news. Wang has made such a big deal about this date that I think he simply wants to make clear to everyone what will happen now that the deadline has passed without a yes or a no. I hope I’m wrong.

  5. 5 a REAL hockey fan

I think EVERYONE has ALOT on there mind besides the game - i truly hope and think there will be a final decision/good news re: the lighthouse (I hope)

Glad to see the Wrecker in the lineup and its a very young and green/raw team there will be alot of highs and lows for the Isles this year and all Isle fans have to have ALOT OF PATIENCE!!

    !!!! P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E !!!!!!!

  6. 6 Devon

Oh god. Please, Brooklyn/Queens/Suffolk STEP UP

  7. 7 Pete M

She set him up. If this doesn’t expose the whole “I’m an independent arbitrator” nonsense she’s been spouting for the last 6 months for what it is - unadulterated BS - nothing will. She wants him to walk away - and what better way than to continue to come up with ways to piss him off. When he does she can blame the whole thing on him and hold herself up as the protector of the little people of Hempstead, holding the line against the big, bad developer that was going to change the fabric of their lives. Disgusting.

  8. 8 dose

i’m surprised. i had a hunch he would be more positive.
    maybe he was holding back?

  9. 9 AZS

    What a joke!

Way to go KATE MURRAY! You just can’t stop yourself from screwing up at every turn can you? Something as simple as a request to not involve the media in a private phone conversation and you turn around and stab the man in the back?! Why would you do that! You know what, I’m done with this. I hope Wang moves the team off of Long Island at this point. It’s been well documented through this point that the Rechler group has done everything asked of them and the TOH just keeps finding more ways to hold it up and screw them over. I am SO HAPPY that I moved out of that area so I don’t have to deal with Kate and her crap!

  12. 12 Brother Rat

I thought that Murray made it clear that there won’t be a decision today, hence the phone call and possible meeting next week. Why not reward Suozzi for supporting the Lighthouse Dev Corp? Wining and dining Brooklyn, Queens, and Suffolk officials can only help the team and our posture.

Curses to the NHL for dropping the free NHL radio online network. For us out-of-towners, naturally 94.3 doesn’t stream online.

The saving grace is that the Pens’ radio station does stream online for free, and they’re doing a great job with Isles coverage in recent minutes: interviews with Gordon and Tavares, and a shout-out about Matt Moulson. Let’s do this, Isles!

  13. 13 Vealchop

is the game on the web?

I am at work, working over nights.

  14. 14 Brother Rat

Steve Mears talking now on the Pittsburgh’s channel. Good to hear his voice, good to hear him talking Tavares. He sounded a bit wistful to me. (sorry to violate the rules so soon, CB!)

  15. 15 FantasyIsles

Wang’s relentless grandstanding might well cost LI the historic legacy that is the NY Islanders… Memo to Sorry Charlie: move this team out of town and you better move with them! Your reputation will be worthless. I and many others will oppose anything you are ever involved with again on LI.

  16. 16 Pete M

Rechlicz almost falls down coming out of the tunnel during introductions. Nice.

  17. 17 Jason

Kate Murray is a JOKE. I hope she takes that to Newsday so they can print it.

  18. 18 CHAD

man, this penguin team is a dynasty waiting to happen -

young, skilled and they are all under contract for 4-6 years

whoever is the islanders #1 center would be the #5 center on the penguins

  19. 19 player

Uhh, yea, ok Kate Murray…err, I mean “FantasyIsles.” Wow, her operatives are already in damage control.

  20. 20 Brooks Simpson

Goodness … we all knew the deadline would come and go.

    Enjoy the game. Please.

  21. 21 Pnut

I hope Suffolk or Queens or Brooklyn come a calling soon. Very soon.
Murray, and Mondello and D’Amato stink. They are useless.

  22. 22 sheesh

#15,,,,,Kate we know it’s you or one of your cronies so give it up.

  23. 23 Sean

For the person who asked, the islanders web site streams the radio broadcast. NHL doesn’t do it anymore b/c they are pushing their online TV package.

  24. 24 fan

Very interesting that Rick was nowhere to be found in the pregame intros…. All other injured players were!

  25. 25 joe fred

Another stall tactic, why would Wang not be upset!charles,do whatever you need to do, Katie can be the savior for Garden City and then be voted out in another 2 years once everyone understands just how much of an idiot she is…..

  26. 26 19 ISLE in NJ 22

CB - I’m surprised at Wanger … He’s a brilliant business man … but he let a hack local politician out maneuver him … That is exactly what she wanted.

Make Wang look like the bad guy … she laid it down like she was furiously speeding up the process and trying to be an impartial judge … she’s been spewing out that kind of rhetoric since day 1 … Wang set up a trap for himself known as Oct. 3 … and he jumped into it with both feet. She was the last one standing by holding out an 11th hour olive branch and Wang swapped it out of her hand.

Things that make you go hymmmmm.

  27. 27 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Wang will listen to Kate? She deserves that respect? Will he be texting to other suitors while she’s talking to him? LOL!

  28. 28 max

i am now very nervous that they will not be on long island anymore but even if they do move i will root for them no matter wat. I still thinks this gets done but if it dosnt wang could also consider just building a new coliseum which would have been a lot simpler for the town to approve

  29. 29 NickyL

Max, he would still lose money every year if he just re-did the coliseum.

  30. 30 geezette

Would Mr. Wang be interested in owning the Isles if they go somewhere else? His only way to get back any of his losses is to sell the team. No lighthouse, no incentive.
I’m an out of towner, so I have no vote. But, if they leave the island I hope you folks that do can remember who you need to campaign against come election time.

  31. 31 NickyL

Wang should strike a potential deal with another city. Write up a contract. Go to the TOH and show them it. Then say “Look, I have a contract right here to move to this city. I have not signed it yet b/c Im willing to give you one last chance. If you don’t do anything thing, im signing this immeadiately and faxing it to the NHL offices”

  32. 32 Steve

Hopefully, Brooklyn and Queens come calling starting October 4.

  33. 33 eric

    jt first goal.

  34. 34 Frank nyc

JTTTTTT Firsttt Goal! Plus an assist…2 pts in his first NHL game. not badd

  35. 35 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Purttay backhander … JT is gonna be deadly down low.

  36. 36 eric

    jumping out of my seat

  37. 37 nystrom23

Haven’t been this excited in awhile…if we lose a lot this year we are gonna put up a fight

  38. 38 MJS

Pens radio broadcast makes it seem like the Isles are all over the Penguins. I guess Overspeed is working for this game. Hope the players are conditioned well enough to keep it up the whole season.

Also, everyone that bought a ticket to this game got their money’s worth when JT put that puck in the net.

  39. 39 Terry19

Im watching the game on centerice from Los angeles. The Pitt broadcasters dont know what to say. we look good, we make it messy and get the puck in the sloppy areas where guys like JT can do damage.!!!! we’ll see if we can keep it up in the 3rd. Bailey, your not a grinder!!!!! shot and create!!! He’s got more to give. Love moulson, love KO, love gervais. Streit is one of the best dmen in the league.!!!

  40. 40 Rick

The last time the Isles had a player who got this kind of a reaction out of the crowd was Pierre Turgeon - all due respect to Ziggy. It’s been a long, long time.

  41. 41 therain93 -- terriers fan

Well, ladies and gents, Islanders have at least their first point. Not bad so far, with JT netting 2 with so much ice time. Just hope the season doesn’t run him down.

  42. 42 Justin

Not a bad start, but the Pens’ skill was just too much in the third period. Isles are fortunate to get a point out of this. Roloson played great, but he didn’t react at all in the shootout.

  43. 43 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Lots of things are different than last year … except one big thing … late game collapses.

  44. 44 Oren

Really starting to wonder about Gordon. I know its the first game but he had last season too. Jeff “fricken” Tambellini nate thompson and jackman are not nhl’ers, neither is moulson. Ya thin Roloson or Biron are gonna be any better…take a look at our defense, we were lucky to get a point LUCKY!

  45. 45 MattyB

New Year, Couple New Players, Same fricken Islanders collapse….Typical

  46. 46 Matt

again, love the team but i aint spending a penny on this team.

  47. 47 west coast isles fan

Oren what game were you watching?

Tamby was all over the ice

Moulson was robbed out of the game winning goal in the 3rd

I give you thompson..and thats it

    no soup for you

  48. 48 dmen77

Guys we didn’t just lose to the Alaska Aces, we lost to the defending Stanly Cup Champs…..in a SHOOTOUT.

Yes it was a 3rd period collapse, but anyone who thought we were going to be a powerhouse needs to put down the bottle and face reality.

We have a point to start the season, let the kids grow and we’ll keep getting points.

    I’ll take a 1 point, 3rd period blown lead 4-3 shootout loss over a 0 point, hardworking, no-lead 2-1 loss any day.

  49. 49 JPinVA

Can’t really complain about a point against the Stanley Cup Champions… but I will anyway.
Great game by Okposo-Tavares-Moulson. Moulson is turning into a very pleasant surprise. Great hit by Witt.
At the end of the second period they were DEAD. 18-5 and 4-1… that’s the way to finish??? I don’t know what he does to these guys, but they don’t have legs in the third period. And then he’ll blame them for not playing hard enough, or not staying “in the system”
Please get rid of Scott Gordon. Let him teach his system to a college team.
Is it going to get better when the lineup gets older with Doug Weight in it?
Great game by the players, but I can do without the 30 minute full court press and 30 minutes of chasing the puck around their own zone like the keystone cops.
Bailey STILL should be in juniors, and Thompson must have pictures of Gordon dressed as a woman. Tambellini on the PP and the first shooter in the shootout… WTF? At least Sim was in everybody’s grill all game. Tambellini couldn’t even seperate on a 2 on 1 rush with Okposo… he’s got to go.
Please give us an NHL lineup, and an NHL coach.

  50. 50 Steven

I just do not get it 50. There is soo many things to like about this game. It’s not like the Isles blew a 2 goal lead. The tying goal was off a skate. Getting a point against the champs is not bad at all. I agree about Jeff being all over the ice. There is a lot to build off this game. It’s only one game but this team does not look like the worst team in the league.

  51. 51 Flux Capacitor

Team looks much improved from last year. Goalie play was solid and the power play looked better. Okposo, Tavares, and Moulson were the best line for the Isles. They created scoring chances we never saw last year. Thompson is a liability on the ice. The team still needs more size. Pittsburgh consistently crashed the net and the Islanders could not clear the crease. All in all I agree with dmen77 that is a solid point earned against a scary Penguin team.

  52. 52 Bags502

I agree with the poster above… Nate Thompson has to go, I know he is Gordon’s boy from Boston but he just isnt good. I also think Jon Sim has to go.

The Isles will be much better when Weight, Comeau and Shremp join this team in the comeing days.

  53. 53 Bill

What?!? The Isles took the game to overtime and then lost in a shootout to the defending Stanley Cup champs? How horrible! This is just typical of the joke this team has become! Get rid of them all! Sell the franchise! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

  54. 54 Leviticus

    Amen West Coast Isles Fan!!

  55. 55 Terry19

some of the comments on this board, its amazing. the perpsective on the loss is outrageous. We had our 1 round draft pick score and have an assist, our franchise dman have 2 points, our second line center have a beaut of an assist. we lose in ot to the defending stanley cup champs with 2 of the best players in the game and you want to talk about how much nate and jon suck. come on. that is ridiculous. its the first game of a 2 year rebuild season. pointless, shameful.

  56. 56 german islesfan

i’am happy for JT very good start in his NHL carreer one goal and one assist. to bad this late 3-3 and i hate those SO. am end of this day i can live with this point.

  57. 57 Islander505

Nate Thompson is the only guy on this team right now who can win a faceoff.

Wang has Kate bent over backwards.

Let it run and let it happen.

Kate will ask for a “concession” and get a coupla residential units to go away.
    And get herself re-elected.

    Deal done.

    Next problem?
Where is the money coming from?

Just my opinion…from two time zones away.

  58. 58 Steven

There is not much else to add 55. I just cannot understand some of the comments.

  59. 59 BringBackNyles

You know, I was never pro-Lighthouse 100% or pro Wang 100%, but Kate Murray, I mean…come on already. She called at 4pm on a deadline set one year ago to say “Hi, I called you, lets think it over soon?” She is like the high school girl that strings the love smitten boy along for four years….

I can’t believe I am typing this, but…Wang , at some point, you have to walk away.

  60. 60 Bags502

    Terry,
I understand what you are saying but neither of those 2 players are going to any part of our team after our rebuild. So why dont we give a young kid who has some skill to offer a shot? Id rather see Matt Martin has to offer rather then watching Sim run around the ice. Thats all.

I am completely happy with the Isles effort tonight. This was not a collapse either, it was a 1 goal lead in the third against the defending champs.

  61. 61 nystrom23

JT is gonna be special…watching his skill with the puck he is light years ahead of a lot of players..his skating and everything else will come along with our top young skilled guys

  62. 62 Blizzard

Its interesting to see how the game gets analyzed by different people.

    My observations and comments:

Nice to see JT score. KO played awesome and is ready for stardom. Nice hit by Witt. He needs to bring that every game. Solid Goaltending Rolosson is steady, Crosby smoked him in the SO though. Jackman is certain to lose more teeth this season.

Can we get Sim off Baily’s line I dont want his growth stunted. As a matter of fact throw Schremp in there and see what he can do.

Seemed to run out of gas in the third and Pitt played last night. Disturbing trend carried over from last year.

Was great to sit down and watch Islander Hockey again. Dont worry about JT. He is gonna score. I would say that I was very pleased with how the Islanders played. The rebuild is going well. Just hope they are still around when they get reall good.

  63. 63 beatlebailey

just got back from game…what a good time…i dont consider shoot outs to be wins or losses really so we stood toe to toe with the pens physically as well…even tambellini had a nice hit..martinek stuck up for himself..thought i was in the twilight zone seeing that. Roloson will die if he keeps getting abused in net physically like he did tonight though..geezus…good game boys keep it up. JT is going to be good. and he is not as slowa skater as i thought

  64. 64 NYIFAN09

    CB,
Just back from game. Please shed some light as to why every single player on the NYI team, injured or not, was introduced during pre-game intros EXCEPT for RICK DiPIETRO? Something fishy is going on…… If anybody has the answer, it is you…… Inquiring minds want to know…..

  65. 65 beatlebailey

i did not even notice that DP wasnt introduced. Is he trying to create drama or something? Honestly this may be cold but out of sight out of mind. I am rooting for the sweater. If DP comes back great..if not we will start over with another goalie.

  66. 66 purify

all the negativity, did anyone notice that pitt actually had one goal scored that was a clean goal (crosby). pits second and third goals all went of islander players. this was no way a collapse that we where used to last year. there was so much positive to take out of this game to make feature strides. as far as gordons system not havng size in the line up we are notgoing to muscle anyone off the puck so we have to play a presure sytem to create turnovers. wake the replay of the game even pits announces said we controlled majority of the play.

  67. 67 Terry19

    bags,
Gotcha, rather see joensuu/Martin too. But what an exciting start. If you told me the core would play that good for the first game, id have said,”in my dreams”, but they did. I’m a lifer. Been to the majority of the cup wins. I’m thrilled. I was screaming when JT scored and I was watching it by myself. My wife thought the cat died and we dont even have a cat.
I think that anyone who is saying,”same old Isles” of the past 15 years is missing out on how special a team is growing before our very eyes. This is the same excitement I had in 76!! Bailey, Okposo, JT, Streit, Hunter, Bergie, Gervais Its fun.
NO INJURIES, PLEASE!!! We are 2 seasons from 79-80.

  68. 68 Rick

This was a good start against the defending Stanley Cup Champs who have 2 of the world’s best players in the lineup - the Isles didn’t get blown out by any stretch of the imagination, not exactly sure how anyone could not walk away from this game feeling anything but optimistic about the team. Excellent game for the Isles.

  69. 69 Strummer's Army

    I hate Kate Murray!

Tavares, Streit and Bailey looked sensational. Okposo looked strong but not his usual self which is understandable as he hasn’t played much yet.

Interested Godard didn’t accept any of Riehclecz offers to fight, Goddy might still be feeling the effects of his fight last night.

It is disgusting that the Isles PP has guys named Sim and Moulson on it. Is that the best they can do?

Sim, Geravis, Martinek gotta go and now.

It’s pretty shocking that even the Pens have a bigger team then the Isles.

All and all not bad the youngsters showed well and so did Roloson.

  70. 70 big dally mac

I thought Sim had a great game. If you want to trade him make sure he is productive when injures allow. Tambellini hit a post and that’s the only time i remember seeing him. Bailey looks like and NHLer this year. And Tavares is a Phil Esposito clone with better moves. We may not be as bad I thought we’d be, but it’s only early….I like that Moulson too….be nice if he became as good as verteeg in Chicago.

  71. 71 dalcy

once again politics rips the joy out of life. btw any citizen that is “into” politics baffles me.

  72. 72 Bags502

    Terry,

I think Martin would fit into this team so well. Perfect guy for the front of the net too. My mom was there for the first cup.(so jealous of her)

I love the core that Snow has put together. Bailey, Comeau, KO, JT, Bergie, Hunter, of course Streit. I think that a big factor in the season is if Sutton stays healthy. (well everyone needs too really) I also think Moulson and Schremp could be really good players.

Did you see Stan Fishler pick Isles to make the playoffs and get the 8th seed. I was in shock when he said that.

  73. 73 Joe in Massapeqa

Just got in from the game not pleased about the reality of what today is/was. It might very well be day one of the end of the Isles on the Isle. G*d I hope I am wrong. JT looked incredible and there was just a different feel of things when he was out there. Let’s hope we can continue to watch that here on the Isles and not thru the NHL Center Ice package!

  74. 74 James

Yea all in all tonight you could see that next step we have taken, there were times where we took it to the Pens, we need to work on not backing up in the 3rd, it cost us yet another point. We will learn as out guys get more experience.

I thought most of the team looked really good tonight; I really really like Matt Moulson, he impressed me tonight. I have also been hearing that Schremp was a steal off of waivers and that he is a gem with the puck. We have many young guys with talent now, and this season should be fun. You can see our D is still the weakness though, which is why De Haan was a good draft pick.

All in all I was happy with our performance tonight, just need to work on playing with a late lead, once we figure that out, we will be much better off. Great energy from the team tonight

  75. 75 StevieL

I say Wang feeds Murray a couple of beers and sends her out to use the bathroom between periods! That will get it done!! It is a total joke! The restroom line cuts right thru the food line!! Was at the game! I predict when it’s done, Tavares will be perhaps the Isles all=time scorer!! He easily could have had 3 tonight. Once he settles down, he will fill the net! I thought Hunter was great tonight!

  76. 76 Jason

Great being at the game tonight. Too bad the boys didn’t pull out the win, but a great fight nonetheless.
JT looked great, KO amazing, just about everyone came to play tonight. Great crowd as well.

  77. 77 Frustrated Voter

If anyone had told me the Isles would be in a tie in the 3rd period with the defending champions in July, I would have been ecstatic. This was a great start and exactly what the Isles needed.

  78. 78 James

Yea I didnt even mention Witt and Jackman manned up tonight, that was great to see

Hunter looked awesome as well, there was a lot of good to be taken from this game.

Again we need to work on playing with the lead in the 3rd, a young team will lay back sometime, once we learn that, we are golden

Also keep in mind, Weight comes back soon; he has to love what he saw tonight, and will play motivated.

  79. 79 Matt, Port Washington

All in all…if the Isles move to Queens or Bklyn, Kate Murray will be left with the legacy of creating an empty Coliseum as all of the concerts and events will travel to the new arena built in the borough chosen.

The businesses — particularly the restaurants and hotels in the area will struggle and the area will become a wasteland. It’ll be the pit that Kate left.

The good news is traffic will be light.

    What a dope.

  80. 80 Frank nyc

This team will be a bit better than people think.
Im not saying they will win the cup or anything but they will definately be competitive. We have the making of a first line for years to come with JT and KO. I liked Bailey a lot tonight and looking forward to seeing what Schremp to do. Theonly thing that could have made the night better was a win. But JT with a goal and ast was great! GO ISLES!

  81. 81 MT

great game, great experience, it was just great to hear the john tavares chants.

i agree with another poster above, where the heck was ricky? he can’t even show his face? weird that there was really no acknowledgement of him

wang should pull a lemieux and start getting on planes to wherever there are offers. it worked for pitt.

  82. 82 Justin

I’m so confused by the whole DiPietro thing. Whose call was it that he wasn’t introduced…his, the team’s? I think the fans would’ve given him a big ovation. Did they maybe think he would be booed so they didn’t take the chance? Very odd.

  83. 83 NYIFAN09

#82…. I am with you…. Very odd indeed. I am hoping CB can shed some light on this….

  84. 84 anthony c

congrats JT on your 1st NHL goal. And he got it on his 1st shot plus an assist on striet’s goal. Sadly couldn’t watch the game since I live on the west coast so I listened to it on the isles website.

And on another note, all I have to say to kate murray is this….YOU FAIL!!!!! That is all

  85. 85 steve

man, does KO drive to the net or what?
its nice to see some of our players make some slick moves with the puck. i thought we played well against the cup champs. the pens are better. they were better last year, they are better this year, and they will be better next year. pitt got a couple of unusual goals. they pressed us hard in the third, and did a solid job. a solid effort vs the champs. we stepped up when we had too, and it was nice to see a crushing open ice hit, that was clean. shoulder to sternum, no forearm, no jumping. we gave up 3 goals to a high powered team, scored 3 goals, and got physical when we had too.
TOH, if Mr Wang gets one solid offer to relocate/sell the team, enjoy making something of that huge concrete and blacktop patch located in central nassau. mr wang’s “plan b” is to relocate.
whats plan “b” for a 35 year old arena next to nothing, with no tennants. the mother of all “park and rides”?
i think Mr Wang is a lot smarter then hes given credit. being annoyed and fustrated isnt defeat, its annoyance and fustration. TOH has to answer to local politics, machine politics, and an upcoming election. Mr Wang has to answer to Mr Wang. Mr Wang has deep pockets. Mr Wang isnt the one holding an empty arena if this goes south.there is no upside for TOH if the team leaves. i don’t think its a crushing loss, but theres no upside.
“we showed him. he left town with a professional team, and now we have an empty arena. the team was losing money, while the town and the county were making money off the team. now a legion of crazy hockey fans who will torment us whenever possible. hurrah us!”

If the isles leave then the colliseum should be torn down.let murray damato and the rest of the republican fossils in hempstead wallow in a paved over vacant lot. And I am a registered republican.

  87. 87 joe

hey anyone else sit next to that pens fan that everyone was bashing it was so funny

  88. 88 Chris TMC

CB- as many have stated, I am also wondering about the whole introduction thing. I mean, seriously- Reich but not Rick? WTH is that? Was he even there? Howie and Billy didnt even seem to notice.

That being sid, this was the most enjoyable loss I can remember watching. Congrats to the Isles for a hard-fought game and to Tavares for going multipoint in his first NHL game!

  89. 89 Chris TMC

That being SAID, I meant. Heh, sid… how ironic.

Just got back from a buddies now after being at the game. The whole conversation amongst those that were present and those that watched on TV is how much better this team is….Tavares and Okposo together create space for each other and allow them to make the slick moves that come so naturally to them. Moulson is solid too. We had 2 pretty decent players out of the line up tonight (hopefully Schremp can rediscover himself here) and played the champs mighty well. I really like the aggressive system and if not for Bruno’s skate, we probably squeak by. I can’t remember when I had so much fun watching the team create opportunities. I am very much looking forward to the rest of this season, and future ones. I hope TOH comes to their senses….if not, hopefully Brooklyn or Queens works out. By the way, Tamby showed much improvement tonight.

  91. 91 eric

matt moulson is to john travares
    is what
max talbot is to sidney crosby

    me likey

    go fish!!!

  92. 92 Strummer's Army

Why did Jon Sim (-2 tonight) get more ice time then Bergy and Hunter? That makes zero sense. A guy who is in the last year of his deal and was waived then demoted last year is eating up ice (thought Isles didn’t do that) from first rounder Bergy and 20+ goal scorer Hunter. Bergy is a guy who can score 20+ but Isles have never given him his ice.

  93. 93 eric

something no one has mentioned is jt is a1/2 a porkchop.
in the best way . my friends are porchagese and my sisters fiancee is too. the island has a strong porchagese commuitte.
    think about it.

  94. 94 MattyB

Eric, why didn’t you just make those four commenets in one?….read the commment guideline kid….Anyway…Good game tonite…Played the champs hard….Can’t be upset about that result…JT had a very good showing, but I think KO was the best player on the ice, had nothing to show for it, but that happens

  95. 95 eric

i would rather see young guys make mistakes and learn . then vets collect a pay check. we will win. be patience.
    go islanders.
    go fish!!!.

  96. 96 Islebethere4u

i wouldn’t worry too much about how long Thompson and Jackman and Reichliz will be ther, with Comeau, Neilson and Weight coming back soon. Both teams made mistakes that you won’t see a month from now ie missed passes and flubbed shots.JT looked good but gassed at the end. Flash needs to ease him in a little more. 22-24 NHL min might be to much to ask at this point although he looked good. And if Kate isn’t grandstanding with that last min call to Wang, then I don’t know what is!!! Queens? Brooklyn?? anyone?

  97. 97 Islebethere4u

sorry Neilson not for a while but Schremp.

I can’t believe that some people watched that game and thought, “I need to get on the Internet right now to bitch about Jon Sim!” If that’s your reaction to the effort the Isles put out against the champs, then I wonder if you’re even capable of enjoying a hockey game.

Don Cherry on “Coach’s Corner” was raving about Matt Duchene and how he should have been first pick. Duchene looks good but so does JT (after one game).

  101. 101 Isles Fan

Still no comments on the DP mystery…..?

  102. 102 thepolishprince

Fantastic game at the old barn. It was incredible to see JT’s reaction to his first goal. He’s still a kid, let him be excited. Bailey looked great. The defence looked “meh” and Rolosson was way more than solid in goal. I tell you if even half the games are gonna be that much fun to watch this is going to be an exciting season.

  103. 103 JayK

Yes, the DP thing is still a mystery, Isles Fan. There’s nothing more to comment, because there’s nothing more to say. Who knows why he wasn’t there? Apparently Comeau feels like hell, and HE made it. Where was Rick.

I thought Nate Thompson played a really pesky game.

    Bruno was brutal. Really brutal.

  104. 104 Tony

Close your legs Rollie!!! Biggest 5-hole in the NHL.

  105. 105 rob d

I think the team played very well considering how much more talent and experience the Pens had. Goaltending was solid on both sides.

Just think how much better we’d be if Snow would spend some damn money. Gilroy would have looked great with rest of the young Isles but of course Snow has to be a cheapo and the Rangers spend, spend, spend. We are how much under the cap?

I don’t know about the rest of you, but im pretty ticked at Sim for not tying up Fedotenko’s stick on the tying goal. What was he doing, taking pics? Send him on his way on put a young like Schremp in there. Lets use vets who are actually useful and productive, like Hunter, Weight, and Park. Where exactly does Sim fit in?

Finally, maybe Gordon needs to make these guys skate until exhaustion. Many players looked like they couldnt even skate in the 3rd and OT. At least have all the players conditioned!

I’d like to elaborate on my previous post, as people think I’m being overly negative.
    It was a nice game.
PITT: Ed Olczyk got them high draft picks, but they had to change to get to the next level. Now he’s calling games in Chicago…where he belongs.
WASH: Glen Hanlon got them high draft picks but he couldn’t win. Now he’s in Finnland where he belongs.
NYI: Scott Gordon may have been the ONLY choice as most coaches didn’t want to work with a league low payroll, a horrible prospect pool and terrible facilities.
Garth has done some good things to change what he could, but they are still putting out an AHL lineup (but they are getting there). But Gordon isn’t playing a system that will be easy to UNINSTALL… so do it soon. That will accelerate the rebuild.
The only question is, who available would take the job?

  107. 107 chris

Did anyone notice last night that Dipietro was not part of the opening introduction?

  108. 108 Les Beaver

Anyone know why DP wasn’t called out before the game with the other players that weren’t in uniform?

  109. 109 Les Beaver

Hey Chris 105 - GET OUTTA MY HEAD!

And a sign of how much attention Tavares will bring to this team: I’m stuck @ work this morning, and I’ve got ESPN radio on in background. Every 20 minutes for the last 2 hrs (what I’ve heard, probably been longer) they’ve included only one NHL score in the radio SportsCenters. Might seem small, given there were 14 other games they’ve ignored, but that’s exactly the point: considering there was college FB last night and NFL in a couple of hours, just getting one in there is big for ESPN. And every time they mention that “overall number one pick John Tavares had a goal and an assist in his NHL debut.” Nice.

  111. 111 Bob Bassen

Great game! Considering the complete dissaray of everything relating to the Islanders, some may want to choose another team, sport, seek counseling or all of the above.
    Anyway…
Some random thoughts…Taveras’ shot in the shoot-out was, um..well,…next time! Also was very surprised that Pittsburgh had the better legs in the third period. Dissapointing. The tying goal went off Gervais (not his fault but I also thought his overall game was pretty weak) and was lucky but Pitt controlled the 3rd period I thought…also thought Mckee should have gotten a Game Misconduct 3rd man-in on the Witt/Fedetenko hit. (Clean hit, Tank had his head up,btw) but we all know how THAT goes, (ahem). Tamby played well…played the body a lot too! Thought his shoot-out shot was predictable but i guess he did hit the post, fwiw…..Moulson could very well be up here for a while…impressive..plays physical too…Bailey looked better but still needs some muscle/nastiness…Okposo, imo, was the best player on the Isles. Wow. Decision-making with the puck, stronger on his skates, confidence…..good stuff.
Thompson won some very important face-offs late in the game and OT. Had to watch the game on Center Ice but the Pitt announcers were pretty complimentary of the Isles and were raving about the quality of the game. Amazing all of the press the Isles are getting because of Tavares (good) and the Town of Hempstead BS. (bad…and sad)
    Go Isles!

The lack of DP. CB needs to get to the bottom of this. If anybody can, its CB.
