FIGHTING WORDS FROM KRISTEN McELROY
Also: Baumbach – Queens Wants the Islanders
UPDATED at 1:05 pm - Queens steps up to the plate. Read Jim Baumbach.
Kristen McElroy, the Democratic candidate for Town of Hempstead Supervisor, is pregnant, peeved and pro-Lighthouse Project.
After her introduction in late May as Kate Murray’s opponent, McElroy disappeared for four months. She explained her absence by revealing her pregnancy and doctor-prescribed bed rest. McElroy says everything is okay now and she is medically cleared for campaining. (My choice of words). As for my perception of her sudden, maybe-too-late-in-the-game emergence, McElroy said campaigns at this level are typically a one-month sprint to election day.
When we spoke by phone on Friday afternoon, the Garden City resident was returning from a meeting with the Newsday editorial board in which both McElroy and Murray made their pitch for the newspaper’s endorsement. She came out of the meeting with little respect for her political opponent.
“The Supervisor acted like a disgusting politican,” McElroy said. “She pulled the same stuff on the Lighthouse Project that she’s been doing all year. Kate Murray has been a roadblock. She says her actions on the Lighthouse are not politically-motivated, but everyone knows they are.
“Every agency that has approved their piece of the project, like the Department of Transportation, she does not accept. She continues to say the ball is in Charles Wang’s court, yet everyone knows this is in Kate Murray’s hands. This project is essential to the entire county – the jobs, the tax base – and Kate Murray continues to stall.”
The Labor council gave Murray their endorsement months ago, before the Lighthouse hearings that led to no progress and infuriated union leadership. McElroy said she “screened” with the trades in July but wants another meeting. McElroy also had an informational session with the Lighthouse Development Corp. two months ago and would like to schedule a meeting with Charles Wang and Scott Rechler in the next two weeks.
Time is running out. I believe McElroy is fighting a monumental uphill battle and told her so. When I asked her if she genuinely feels she has a chance to defeat Murray in the election next month, McElroy said, “Absolutely. I have every intention of becoming the next Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead. And when I do, the political games around the Lighthouse will end and the project will be approved.”

I wish her luck but it may be too little too late. I won’t say she has my vote, but Murray doesn’t have mine. What else is McElroy gonna do besides push through the lighthouse. Send me an updated town phone number list?
-
VOTE MCELROY AND KEEP THE ISLANDERS HERE
-
Best of luck to her!
-
Yawn, she’s a nobody and can’t do a thing. Thanks for calling though…
-
I really hope she gets voted in. She seems to good to be a politician. All politicians ar liars. She seems legit.
-
Best of luck to her and the future of the Lighthouse Project. Those who are eligible to vote in the election needs their voices heard. McElroy needs to get out there NOW and be visible and vocal or she doesn’t stand a chance. Kate Murray obviously feels no political pressure right now. This will only change if there is a visible opponent to call her out.
-
Its all hands on deck over the next month to win Lighthouse approval by working with Ms. McElroy. Win or lose for McElroy, the importance of getting the message out EVERY DAY FOR THE NEXT MONTH on the benefits of the Lighthouse for the region and the nasty political manipulations of Kate Murray. The board members who are anti-Lighthouse and blackmailed by Al D’Amato have a few weeks to be on the right side of history or there names will forever be synonymous with dirty politics and bad judgment.
Go Kristen and Go Lighthouse!!!
-
Googling her name reveals no campaign website? C’mon. TOH Democrats’ website last updated in 2007? What is going on here? Is there some contact info so we can at least try to help her campaign?
-
Instead of paying off politicians, is there anything legally wrong with Wang (pronounced like the Yankees’ pitcher, just in case Kate or her cronies are reading this) handing out family packs with a letter attached to “Vote McElroy” — and tell your friends to — keep the Islanders where they belong? Isn’t election day on 11/3? If so, there’s a game one night earlier against Edmonton — which typically would generate a small crowd.
-
I am a Republican from Levittown and she has my vote. Then again, I would vote for Curly Howard of the Three Stooges over Kate Murray and the stone age pols that run the TOH. Our only chance to get the Lighthouse approved is to vote Murray out of office.
-
Charles might be long gone by then.
-
GUNS BLAZING.
I absolutely love the way Kristen McElroy came out in this interview. She dropped the gloves, pointed fingers, and showed us Isles Fans, that she’s in it for us.
This is not a presidential race. No need for a year long campaign. We’ve got a month to let everyone know about McElroy and the corruptness of the current incumbent. Let’s show Kristen we are behind her and get her into office.
-
if i would have lived in Hempstead, i would vote for McElroy. But I don’t.
doubt she’ll win. Murray owns that town.
-
her party could have at least issued press releases while she was unable to campaign–I fear it might be too little, too late but a HUGE local media blitz could help–I just think they(Dem) already have written this off
-
to help out on the McElroy campaign go to the nassau county democratic committee page
more specifically
http://www.nassaucountydemocrats.com/?page_id=23 -
Bravo Kristen…..I know it’s a longshot but hey….rememberthe ’69 Mets……go for it girl!!
-
In all honesty, this could be the opportunity we have all been looking for. We have an opportunity to vote her in. Everyone on this board (myself included) keeps asking what we can do. Its simple, just Vote. I do not see how Kate Murray is a lock for this election. Her name has been dragged through the mud for months. And rightfully so!!!! Lets do this!!!!!
-
Charles should have her at every Islander game/telecast. Have her sit around and talk with Deb.
-
I agree that it is an uphill battle for McElroy to win, but the most encouraging sign that it could happen occurred during the union leader’s speech at one of the recent TOH meetings. He explicitly pointed at Murray and the board and told them that they’re voting this coming election. The unions are a powerful force come election time. If everyone gets on board, this could happen.
-
Maybe Kristen can get some sympathy from women because she is expecting & was on bed rest. I will vote for her but she can’t win. She doesn’t even have an updated website. The Nassau Dems did a bad job with this. They knew this was a tough race anyway.
-
those of us who dont have votes in the town of hempstead election should stand on the meadowbrook, at train stations, and on other main roads (hempstead tpke) with signs saying VOTE MURRAY OUT AND SAVE LONG ISLAND. something to that effect. who’s with me!?!
-
Islander fans Unite and vote Kristen McElroy. What is the typical turnout for these elections. I feel if all Islander fans show up it could really make a difference.
Kristen McElroy
-
I have post this before. and I will post it again now, I am a Registered Republican that lives in TOH, and I am voting for Kristen McElroy.
It is transparent that Murray is playing political games with the possible development of Nassau County and the future of our team.
Islander fans do not lose hope, this is an off year for elections, which usually projects for low voter turnout, so if Islander fans come out strong, we can win the election. But we need to get the word out.
Kristen McElroy in ’09
-
I WILL VOTE FOR HER NOT ONLY AS AN ISLANDERS FAN, BUT AS A RESIDENT OF LONG ISLAND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Can we vote for her even if we live in suffolk? I would luv to do anything to get murray out!
-
I was planning on voting for Murray’s opponent anyway, but I like that she’s comin’ out swingin’(albeit a few months late).
-
Hope Kate reads this…registered republican who will absolutely vote the entire democratic ticket…a first for me. I’m done with her stupidity. Clearly, she is a lightweight.
-
…I feel its imperative to show as much support as possible for her regardless of her chances of winning.
“Absolutely. I have every intention of becoming the next Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead. And when I do, the political games around the Lighthouse will end and the project will be approved.”
Nothing would be sweeter than to actually see this happen. This project is so important for the county. If she starts showing gains on the incumbent surrounding this issue it could very possibly force Murray’s hand. Why she (Murray) still has such a strong foothold in the TOH is beyond me. If I could vote a long time conservative would be voting for a Democrat with out a hesitation.
-
As a LI resident (but non ToH resident) what can I do to help her get elected?
-
to all those who are republican islanders fans.. a vote for McElroy is a vote against Murray! KEEP THE ISLES WHERE THEY BELONG! VOTE OUT KATE MURRAY!
-
I will also try to vote out my Town Councilman. These are low turnout elections. I think Murray won with close to 70% of the vote last time. I guess anything can happen. Kate needs to feel her job can be on the line. Vote the bums out.
-
Islander fans, lighthouse supporters-im sure most of you know who i am by now-Joe Conte, lighthouse pyshco, rabble rouser, etc.
Well i also have a new title, i am running Kristen Mcelroy’s campaign for supervisor. I am new to the campaign but know all your dedication and hope to harness that to victory. If you could donate any time or resources to the campaign please email mcelroyin09@gmail.com
thanks again everyone, and knowing the fact that we played a roll in keeping the islanders here will make it all that more sweet when the lhp is built.
p.s. a new website will be up this week
-
Joe- Get that website up ASAP. Also get at least one road sign out there. I only see Murray’s signs on Hempstead Tpke- Its really annoying. I do give the Republicans credit for getting their signs out there. The signs don’t create votes however- 4 years ago Gregory Peterson ran VS Suozzi. Peterson lost big time. Peterson’s signs were everywhere.
-
I am a devout Republican, but I bleed Orange and Blue and Kate Murray has left a real bad taste in my mouth throughout this whole Lighthouse effort. McElroy will surely have my vote and support.
-
A vote against Murray is excellent but votes against her cabinet is just as good. Make Santino feel the pressure too! They will eat there own kind if they feel like their own jobs are on the line!
-
Dominic is correct. I will be voting against Gary Hudes. I have no idea who is running against him. It will be protest vote. Enough of 100 year one party rule. This is a joke.
-
This is all typical political horse manure. If Souzi was against the project you know Murray would have been for the project, but because Souzi is for it, Murray is against it. I think Wang’s big problem (though I think he had to do it) was set a deadline for Oct. 3rd. Its one thing to deal with holdouts this way and say you have to sign by the start of the season or negotiations are off (just as he did with Bergie)…its something else doing that same thing with politicians who will let the date pass on purpose just out of spite. Lets be honest here, what’s the difference between now and one month from now which is election day. I wish I could vote but I can’t since I live in Westchester County, but I hope Murray loses and this thing gets approved. Unfortunatly, I think Murray has some momentum on her side since the Kansas City game was such a flop, had KC sold out then I think she’d have some pressure on her. I think what we need is say, Queens to approve the building of an arena at WIllets Point right by the Tennis Center and CitiField…then I think you’d really see some pressure to do something.
-
Wang needs to throw his weight and money behind her campaign.
-
Get it done TOH voters. Someone campaign against Murray’s cabinet in Garden City, please. I hear that’s a big Republican stronghold. I am not registered on Long Island, so I am out of this in anything but rhetorical support.
-
POST#22 orngfan, im definitely with you!!!!! i was thinking the same thing. All Islanders fans asking what they can do to help need to join in!!!!! lets all get signs saying “VOTE MURRAY OUT”, “SAVE LONG ISLAND”, “VOTE FOR MCELROY”, “SAVE THE ISLANDERS” ect, ect, ect, post them all over Hempstead, Uniondale, ect. and also go to everywhere people can vote on election day (not sure when or where that is?) and stand outside with signs chanting things like “KRISTEN MCELROY”, “SAVE LONG ISLAND”, “BUILD THE LIGHTHOUSE”, “SAVE THE ISLANDERS”, “VOTE OUT MURRY”, ECT.,ECT. …I am a Suffolk county resident so i dont think i can vote, WE ALL NEED TO COME TOGETHER AND DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO SAVE THE LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT, THE ISLANDERS AND LONG ISLAND!!!!! WHEN ITS NOW OR NEVER, IT NEEDS TO BE NOW!!!!! LETS ALL DO THIS!!!!!
-
With all due respect to Ms. McElroy and her personal fortune in expecting a baby, unfortunately, the notion that a campaign is simply a one-month sprint is laughable on its face–unless she’s planning and is capable of funding an unprecedented and massive TV/radio advertising blitzkrieg against KM. Nothing in Chris’s interview suggests this is the case. Instead, we get typical pablum that, “I am going to win.”
Now it’s a game of chicken. The only thing that is likely to get KM and the TOH to act is a real offer on the table for the Islanders.
One last point. As I recall, although the Islanders have a lease through 2015, isn’t it possible to buy that out at $15 million–meaning that anyone who is willing to pay that cash could move the team before that date?
-
She has absolutely ZERO chance of beating Murray.
Newsflash: If the people voting for Murray wanted the Lighthouse, she’d approve it so fast your head would spin. But the majority of Murray’s residents don’t want it, so she is going to play hardball.
I still think it gets done, but not until after the November elections.
-
for CB – to me it seems wang’s entire outlook has changed and i wonder if it’s all the frustration or something else too. do you think his comittment has waned at all? is he a vindictive person, to the point that given a choice, he’d sell to someone outside LI so murray/TOH gets the heat?
-
I’m a TOH resident and at this point I’d vote for Bin Laden vs Murray.
-
Those of you outside of TOH should contact your local GOP and tell them you are voting the straight Dem ticket in your District because of the GOP position in the TOH and its impact on all of LI. Maybe her own party will put pressure on her if they feel that they will lose close races all around Long Island.
-
Joe #33 – good luck! Please let us know as soon as the web site is up.
I sat with Joe and Nick(lettherebelighthouse) at the zoning hearing. Joe gave a great speech.
Let’s tell Kate Murray to blow it out HER dufflebag! -
Since 72. That is a great move but how many voters will actually do this next month? They don’t care about a thousand protestors. It has to be a “movement”. Election day is only 4 weeks away. We care but does the “general” public really care. I’m not seeing it.
-
43 – so the 65% of public comments being in favor (not counting the 15,000 supporters’ letters added to the rolls), the at least 60% and as high as 95% support at all the public hearings, and all the public polls (including News 12, which showed 71% support) prove people in the Town of Hempstead don’t want it? This is probably the most widely-supported big project in LI history, and it would behoove all involved to get it done.
-
Party politics. It’s always the problem in this country. I am only a Democrat because I feel they are the LESSER of two evils. What Hempstead (and this country) needs is a new political party for the people. Both parties only cater to the rich and the corporations. Which is what is going on here. Kate Murray is pandering to the rich Garden City residents and the Democrats are trying to get on the side of the corporation (Wang, CA and the LHD). The Democrats are saying all the right things about saying how there need to be jobs for the unions and how LI needs something to keep the kids here, but all they want is the future campaign contributions from Wang and his cronies they will surely get if they get the LH approved. Revolt Hempstead, don’t take this lying down. It’s YOUR future.
-
For those of you who don’t remember, CB stated that the 2007 TOH election was one by Kate Murray with a vote of 66,000 to 30,000. I know I didn’t vote. That is not that large of a number to make up if unions voteand Isles fans vote
-
I doubt she can win, but I will definitely be voting for her.
-
Look at Marty’s numbers. 36000 votes in a town of over 800,000 residents is not that much to make up. Most of these local elections are ignored by most people. If everyone here gets their family, friends, co-workers to vote, and unions vote….then maybe Murray will be gone.
-
When, where, and how can i vote for her?
-
I have 6 immediate family members (including me) who voted for Murray the last time around, but will be voting against her this year. Hopefully, there are many more TOH voters who will be making the same switch.
-
Unfortunately, McElroy’s stance on the Lighthouse Project is not nearly enough to get her elected, even if she had been around the previous four months. Remember, the vast majority of the voters in this district do not care one iota about a new stadium. I’d love to hear, instead, about McElroy’s others political stances. If some coincide with the Lighthouse her chances will improve exponentially.
This may be a case of too little, too late, but if she can upset the apple court in the last month, more power to her.
-
If only I could vote in this election.
If you can vote, vote!
-
First off, I love #33 Joe Conte! You my friend are an amazing man!Anyway, Kristen doesn’t realize just how many friends she really has!!She may not win but she can make some noise and make Murray sweat a little!!
Also how about the other board members? Let’s get the names out for the opponents of the likes of Santino etc. Make all their lives miserable for the next month!! -
#45 Spot on!
Long Islanders, you can say Kristen doesn’t win. Whatever, just do what YOU can do. Vote for her. She may be the only hope Islanders have to stay in LI. -
Maybe TOH will finally wake up when Wang starts negotiating with Queens and other cities. “You’re talking about a property that has access to the Long Island railroad, the subway system, the airports,” That should also help increase the average attendance per night.
-
I always believed Queens to be the best option.
-
My first option would to obviously stay put. But the Queens plan would work perfectly. Have a nice relationship with the Mets, the access from the city is amazing. Living in NYC, I would be very inclined to buy a package since it is extremely easy to get to.
-
Wang should schedule a meeting with Queens ASAP just to show Murray that the threat of a move is not a hollow one.
-
queens is easy travel wise and attendance would be high too–Hes going to pay more for that development because Queens actually brings assets to the table BESIDES the land-They bring cash etc. while the TOH only has the land to offer with no other funds to bring to the table–Basically Nassau is broke and so if they lease the land, Wang will spend all the capital and take all the risk
-
I’d say Wang is so fed up with Nassau politics that he’d take this in a heartbeat. No more SMG and he could finally take in the revenues that every owner gets who’s not in an inept area.
-
I keep reading in the papers how the Islanders’ lease prohibits them from playing home games anywhere but Nassau County until 2015, but I also remember reading years ago how there was some kind of buyout option in the lease where Wang can pay a specified amount of money to get out of the lease (something like $20 Million).
Does anyone have any details about that, and if it is correct, why is he not (yet) using that as leverage and why isn’t the press reporting that it is not iron clad that the Isles have to be here util 2015.
If my recollection is correct, someone like Jim Basillie will write a check like that tomorrow to get the Isles up to Hamilton for 2010-2011.
-
Let’s calm down about Queens…not so easy as that. Many steps and does CW get the development rights or only the arena to play in?
-
Queens is a good potential destination for the Islanders–if it comes to that. Being across from Citifield might help in securing more sponsors as well. The Islanders won’t be seen as a “Long Island” team anymore. Maybe some NYC newspapers will actually care. Maybe a potential move (in 6 years) to Queens will be enough to get TOH off their asses. If not in 6 years if Murray is still in power she will claim that she did everything she could to keep the team and Wang wanted only to move.
-
same issue in Queens as there is with TOH. Only In queens the plot of land we would build on is not empty, there are business on it, so it would be an even more difficult process. Easiest option is the worst . . . KC. I say screw the lighthouse and just build a new rink and new lease.
-
VOTE MCELROY
boy I wish I was a resident & had a vote in this election.
-
#69, that isn’t happening and it does not make economic sense…which is my mixed use developments are part of the landscape wherever arenas are being built or renovated. Time to give up that idea…not gonna happen!
-
If Wang doesn’t get the Lighthouse, I’m almost 110% he’ll look to sell the team almost immediately. It’s really that simple. He bought the Islanders and funded them in good faith in order to have a legitimate chance to develop the Uniondale hub. That was/is his entire raison d’etre, and he’s largely admitted as much. In his defense, he’s waited long enough for a simple yes or no from the ToH, and I don’t really blame him. Ultimately the Islanders are caught between a real estate developer and the corrupt, fetid, swamp that is, was, and probably always will be Nassau County politics.
-
the willets point project will get done. the chops shops (who are the only real opposition to the project) are being thrown out right now. the city owns the land and wants the project done so it will be. it makes the most sense for nyi and wang if things don’t work out in nassau.
-
….Queens. Sounds good to me. But being so far behind in the approval process might be something Mr Wang might not want to get involved with after doing battle with the TOH for so long. But it seems like they are willing to have them there. Seems like it could be a great venue, still on Long Island. Accessable. I think It would be great for the Islanders organization.
-
Nassau can’t afford a new arena, TOH doesn’t want a mini city, little to no attention by the media on LI, questionable fan support on LI vs. the total opposite of all that in Queens.
What’s not to love?
-
Charles has got to take a meeting with Queens and Brroklyn to show the TOH that he means business and to listen to the ideas. I think Queens makes the most sense. Major highways, LIRR, NYC Subway and Bus, Citi Field etc. I almost want them to move to either Queens or Brooklyn just to spite Kate Murray and the TOH, but most likely, the Lighthouse will get approved, even if its scaled back a bit.
-
Again, I have no doubt that something will be developed in Wilets Point, but it’s almost certainly not going to involve Charles Wang, and probably not going to involve the Islanders. If the Lighthouse flops, it’ll all be a matter of who he can unload the team to first. In an interview with Mike Francessa two years ago he was asked that if the Lighthouse Project fails what would be next for the Islanders as far as a new building goes and his response was essentially, “I don’t know. Not going to be my problem.”
-
49-
All those fancy stats coming from the Lighthouse blogger. But how many of those people actually live in the ToH? If this was an issue from the County Exec, then I can understand your stats. But to say that 15,000 people wrote letters if only 1,000 came from the ToH doesn’t mean squat.
-
* doesn’t mean squat to Kate Murray.
-
sold! shes got my vote
-
QUEENSSSSS!
-
I no longer live in the TOH so I can’t do squat at the voting booth, but please please lets do something do mobilize this opponent. I was 8 when Bossy scored 50 my son is now 8 and saw Tvarares 1st saturday night. Thw thought of the Isles leaving LI makes me sick. We have to get that fat do nothing nepotism loving 20 ton anchor out of long island politics forever! What a waste of time what a waste of energy! A new state of the art facility that costs the taxpayers NOTHING! What municipality says no to this? How is there even a debate about this? I am so shocked and dismayed by all this. Yet I fear that the fat rat Murray will remain because TOH politics are so wrought with nepotism half the work force are in fear of losing their jobs if they vote out a republican. This has to stop! We must find a way to rid ourselves of this boil on the backside of LI. LIGHTHOUSE NOW!!!!!
-
I’d still like to see the Lighthouse get done, but I really don’t care. My main concern is that the NEW YORK Islanders remain a team based somewhere in NY.
I think building near CitiField, if that’s possible, would make great sense. If Wang can redevelop land there, not only would he benefit from Islanders games, but also Mets games.
Furthermore, if Mets fans use the facilities/restaurants/shops around CitiField, they may be more inclined to go to Islanders game for the same sort of fun during the winter.
Screw Long Island. Go to Queens. Stay in New York.
-
I feel your pain Marc, I truly, truly do; but unfortunately that new free building is tied to a mammoth real estate deal that’s going to cost billions in an economy on life support, and the merits of said are cloudy and far from certain. Wang could have built a new building years ago. He didn’t. He wanted the cost certainty of the attending development. The Lighthouse isn’t really about the Islanders new building as much as the Islanders new building was the path to the Lighthouse. Murray is a hack and sucks hairy bananas, much like others of her ilk, but Wang is rather disingenuous when he insists that the Lighhouse is vital to Long Island, and the Islanders can’t stay in Uniondale without it. If the Islanders are so vital to the area, why doesn’t Suozzi suggest a bond issue for a new building as they did in Pittsburgh? Let me answer my own question: Because he knows that there’s no chance in hell it would pass, and unlike Pittsburgh the Islanders have been a very unfunny joke for the better part of the past 10 years…and that isn’t Murray’s fault. Finally we have a guy who looks to be first franchise type player we’ve had since LaFontaine, but the damage has been done almost to death. It’s just the reality of it.
-
I think it speaks volumes for not only the residents supporting the Lighthouse but equally as important of those supporting the Lighthouse from other areas. It shows an interest from abroad likely echoed from a tourism interest and a reason for people to travel to Long Island and book events here.
-
@83 those are my sentiments as well.
-
I cannot imagine there is an Islander fan nor unemployed person with a vote that won’t vote AGAINST MURRAY!
Let’s Go McElroy!
-
How great would it be if this got approved and we could have NCAA tournament games and more concerts from artists who routinely skip the coliseum.
-
84…Cost billions? Its going to cost the developer billions, not the town and provide a cash infusion to this distressed economy. It’s what makes this situation so unbelievable.
-
I want Kate Murray out of Town of Hempstead and her politics team. I live in Suffolk but this whole thing is dragged out for no reason because of a stupid election in November. Charles come to Suffolk and you can actually get something done. We have areas that need to be developed out here. Screw the TOH and there BS. TOH is the only town in the Country that you can’t get something built that is a fact.
-
Change is good.
-
We should just pay off Kate Murray and get the show on the road. Everyone else is giving her under the table deals, why can’t we? Wang and Co. have invested so much at this point, what’s another couple of mill just to seal the deal. He’ll make it back in the long run. I’m sure the only thing stopping this is Kate receiving money under the table…hence why McElroy said “The Supervisor acted like a disgusting politician” There is clearly a motive here for Kate Murray to stall the project or never approve it.
-
Party affiliation notwithstanding, Nassau County residents have been screwed by local pols for years. Highest property taxes in the land but there is never any money. Of course, there is plenty of abuse, patronage and waste.
Kate Murray is just one of many that need to be voted out. As a resident for almost 32 years I’m tired of paying exorbitant taxes, getting diminshed services and now facing the prospect of seeing our only professional sports franchise be forced to leave.
I’m not interested in seeing the Isles go to Queens, Brooklyn or even Suffolk County. The belong right here in Nassau County and in a first class facility. How quickly the Kate Murray’s forget about the excitement this team generated in the dynasty years and how that excitement translated into local revenues.
-
Hey 84 — Why the hell would Wang provide Nassau County with a new building and nothing else? What’s in it for him? He’s going to spend $400 million on a new arena with a team that loses $20 million annually? Not to mention he doesn’t get a dime from parking and concessions … Yeah, I can’t believe he didn’t go for that.
-
84- If you want to call the Lighthouse a land grab thats fine maybe it is. I do not begrudge Wang and Rechler for trying to make money, that’s what they do. I would like you to educate me on how this hurts the Island or the TOH in particular. If approved it will be up to the Lighthouse group to work out the finances, not the taxpayers. Wouldn’t the 1000s of jobs created by the development help stimulate the dormant economy? If the man had his hand out asking for money than maybe I could understand the opposition. Again the whole development no taxpayer money – whats the problem?
-
I live in Suffolk and have had season tickets for 10 years. Willets Point would double my ride, but I wouldn’t mind. I’m sick of this process, and can’t imagine how frustrating it is for Wang.
If the TOH politicians kill this thing, it means they dont fear the voting public. Hempstead doesn’t deserve the Islanders.
I just hope they don’t move out of the NYC area. -
#45 above made me LOL.
Wow…a citizen from Garden City who is for the Lighthouse.
What next…cats & dogs living in harmony???
-
I already emailed Joe and I am willing to blitz all over the 5 towns/valley stream etc… I bet many of these residents never voted – I am included. I have already rallied every personal friend/parent/sibling/ and every league that I am in – softball/roller hockey/dance classes with kids. It is amazing how many people never voted in the past but seem ready to finally act. You can all say that there is no chance McElroy wins but I can tell you with confidence that thousands of people have never voted and are ready to do so. Many of Murrays supporters are shifting. We need signs on our lawns, signs on poles, home mailings. Blitz the area. No need to even bash Murray. As sad as it is – most people vote simply by 1. Party Affilation and/or 2. Oh – I remember that name on the wall when I was driving – click. Dont underestimate the power of putting something into someones mind right before you need to act. I think we may shock TOH if everyone takes this seriously. Like I said in my other posts – Santino was definately pissed that I called him out in front of evryone this morning. He figured it was a 6:50am cakewalk. Not so my big bellied brother. Times are changing and we need to do something. Dont wait for someone else to. If there was ever a time to do soemthing….this is it. We are at 11:50 and the pumpkin is about to change back.

Queens…Queens…Queens…Queens
With apologies to all of my eastern Nassau Ciounty and Suffolk County friends, I live in NJ and it takes me an hour and a half to get to NVMC even on the weekend.
Besides, closer to the center of metro-NYC will ultimately be a bigger draw now that we finally have two young stars in Tavares and Okposo with more on the way.
-
So Queens said they probably wont be ready for 4-5 years? I think that right there will turn Wang away
-
This just in McElroy lost. Only Charles B. Wang can fight back now. Queens. Go where you will wanted.
-
Hoping for Queens.
-
Hey, Brooklyn and Queens are both on Long Island so I wouldnt mind the Islanders playing there home games in either one. Queens would seem to be the most logical choice of the two becuse of location accesibility and amount of space to build on, and with the requlations there Mr. Wang could probobly build an even bigger project, more like the original with the even bigger building(s)! Queens would also be better for traffic, getting to a 7pm weekday Mets game from suffolk realy isnt that bad! Brooklyn would be almost impossible to get to by 7pm on a week day during rush hour from suffolk. My whole thing is im alright with a move if it must be done, but just keep it on a N.Y. Island!!!!! …in my perfect world the Islanders would split home games between Long Island and Manhatten Island and the rangers would move to texas where they belong!!!!! ahhh to dream the good dream lol
-
I realy hope that she can do something but my expectation for this project happening in Nassau have gone down the drain. Thanks to Murry, all I can hope for now is Queens. I appreciate McElroy’s initiative though.
-
i just want the islanders to stay in new york if they go out of state then it will be very tough on all of us. It would only be a 1 hour drive from where i live
JUST STAY IN NEW YORK
-
we are not allowed to move for at least 6 years so y is everyone worrying six years from now?
-
get the word out anyway you can. use the internet, post signs on the roads, hand out flyers. everything and anything. murray can be defeated. Save the Island, Save the Islanders.
-
JUST STAY IN NEW YORK
-
I don’t live in Town of Hempstead anymore, but I bowl there every week. I was in the area Saturday for the hockey game and found it disgusting that there’s a Kate Murray sign on Hempstead Tpke on the median in front of the Coliseum. I’ve seen one McElroy sign. One. Beaten up on a tree in the Merrick/Bellmore area. Murray has the name and is the incumbant. She’s been on TV, she’s been in the papers with her Lighthouse crap. She has an image. McElroy has squat. She needs to get on TV, she needs signs, she needs to get recognized. otherwise, you get more years of Murray the Cow.
-
Signs don’t win elections. Gregory Peterson was running against Suozzi 4 years ago & had signs everywhere. He lost big time. The Nassau Republicans are great at putting up signs. McElroy needs Murray to get nervous but she has ran a pathetic campaign so far. I’m voting against Murray & her cronies on the town board. No more 100 year rule by one political party.
-
So what happens when the walls of the Coliseum cave in while we are waiting another 6 years?
-
Too bad there are too many Republicans and non-hockey fans in the ToH.
-
Time to move on. Even if it gets “approved” by Murray, why would anyone think that other roadblocks won’t pop time and time again going forward. I don’t trust the Murray and the TOH and it’s time to move to an acceptable alternative.
-
move to queens and let toh enjoy the nice wide open space that they’ll have if the isles move. i can understand why murray wants to keep uniondale the garden spot that it is, can’t you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
In defense of #84, the “billions” for the LH may have been accessible a few years ago, but where is the financing going to come from today? Does Wang have the banks, lenders, and REITs lined up and ready to go? Where are the commitment letters? I doubt that there are any in this economy right now. If TOH approved the project in toto tomorrow, what could be built in the next year? The next three years? Five years? Are we looking more at a 20 year build out? Thousands of jobs don’t happen unless the cash is on the table today–and I just don’t see that.
-
The way I look at the tale of the tape … Murray starts out with a 55% to 45% advantage over McElroy … it’s KM vs KM … ladies … to your corners.
McElroy comes out swinging … and Murray just puts her hand over McElroy’s head as McElroy swings aimlessly at air.
Figure a huge 200,000 vote in the election for arguements sake … with Kate holding an conservative estimate of 55% of the vote that gives her about 110,000 votes and Kristen 90,000 votes … that’s a difference of 20k … I don’t think Isles fans can make up the difference. The Isles have a hard time getting 16K of fans from a combined multiple towns and boroughs for a game … how can Kristen make up the difference?
-
Merrick #115
It is not for the ToH to determine if Wang can get financing or not. Their job is to either approve the project or not. If Wang were to get approval but fail to get financing then the project is dead and it’s no skin off the ToH’s back. In fact if Murray and her cronies felt as you do about Wang not being able to get financing then they would approve it in a heartbeat and force Wang to walk away because he can’t finance it. It’s highly unlikely that Wang would be pushing hard for this project if he didn’t have assurances that he could secure the required financing. An approval by the ToH isn’t an approval in perpetuity either. Deadlines to begin the project would be established pending approval and it would not be in the best interest of Wang and Rechler to take forever to complete the project. Time is money and every day that a building sits unfinished costs a lot of money in potential revenue for the developers.
-
“The Isles have a hard time getting 16K of fans from a combined multiple towns and boroughs for a game … how can Kristen make up the difference?”
Not when there is a reason to show up. There alot more then 20,000 Ilsander fans on the Island. It could be done
-
I Pitch for Brooklyn – I think all on LI should to
I don’t know if you all realize that the LIRR has a terminal directly at the proposed brooklyn site (same time/distance to brooklyn as Penn sta from anywhere on LI). While Queens site is only served by subway/port washington branch.
The brooklyn site is the best transit accessable site in the city
-
MOVE TO QUEENS!!!!!
-
Charles Wang should get a rally together for the election. Have them march to the polls kinda like what happened for the meeting back in august. Bring in a lot of support for McElroy, wave signs against murray and all the goods.
-
I know there are a lot more than 20K of Isles fans on Long Island … but only TOH registered voters can vote in the Town Supervisor elections for Hempstead … Can Kristen make up the difference of TOH voters with just Isles fans? That is my question … b/c I think otherwise the split is at best 55% to 45% in favor of Murray. I think with some Garden City residents begining to organize against the Lighthouse … it’s going to take a lot more TOH Islander fans to push Kristen up over the heap of Murray voters.
-
F the town of Hempstead, especially Kate Murray, and anyone else who is politically offiliated to it. I can’t wait until Charles moves the team and my only hope is that Queens or Brooklyn step up to the plate and make Wang an offer he can’t refuse. Then I can’t wait to see the looks on everyones face at the TOH when they go, “wait, we just want to change a couple more things, why are you leaving”? At that point they can blame Wang for the entire debacle as if anyone will give a crap whos fault it is! We will still root for the Islanders and the TOH will be sitting on a gigantic asphalt jungle with dirty stinking goats roaming around. What an attractive place to live in right? Hempstead will be a ghost town as no one will move in but plenty will leave. But hell, at least there won’t be tall buildings around mucking up the view! Idiots.
-
Does anybody have a rough idea of the clean up cost of the Willets Point land of 62 acres? I want the Islanders to move to Queens and believe they will make money in the long run, but just curious about the clean up cost of the Willets Point land.
-
I would love for McElroy to be voted into office and for Wang to do everything he could to help get her elected.
But think about the problems if Wang throws his support behind McElroy. If McElroy loses, then Wang loses all possible hope with Murray as why would she even consider doing anything to help Wang. He has to keep all of his options open no matter what for now.
TOH is mostly Republican and the battle will be extremely uphill for McElroy, even now more so because of her unfortunate time away from the race.
We can only hope for change, and that even the Rebulican voters in the TOH can see that Murray is a detriment to her constiutents even BEYOND the Lighthouse project (i.e. The Courtesy Hotel Problem).
Everyone BUT Wang should be at the Islander games promoting McElroy and trying to get her elected. Lets all do our best to help get this thing built and get our team the home they deserve!!!
-
I think shes bluffing. She wants people to notice her. But also this will put pressure on Murray’s back. If the TOH lets the Lighthouse pass without any success, Murray is out. Queens here they come. Take a train, enjoy not having to deal with traffic, and when we are competing for Mr. Stanley’s Trophy, we’ll all drive to Garden City, and honk the night away. LET’S GO ISLANDERS.
-
Kate Murray = Walter O’Malley
-
Perhaps the Labor Council will change their endorsement now with this news of McElroy’s pregnancy?
-
living in Suffolk i would not go to any games in Queens. Zero. It is a jaunt to go out to Hempstead. Move the team to Suffolk and i will get seasons tickets.
McElroy for ToH Supervisor. -
Oh man i feel like crying when i read about this
-
I am guessing that there was no meeting between Murray and Wang today? I know that if or when that meeting happens you will have deatails before Newsday’s writers.
-
when i was 15 and the coliseum had just been built there already was contriving over that piece of land. that it’s still goes on and no good use has come of it yet is farcical. if it doesn’t happen now it’s scandalous.
-
I AM VOTING FOR HER. KATE MURRAY HAS TO GO! SHE IS NOT FOR THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD, SHE IS ONLY FOR HERSELF!
-
Politics is being played… politicians dissemble… ego driven personalities on display … Oh, my! We’re not in Kansas anymore, are we? Well, it happens in KS too – local bureaucracy at work is all. All too typical. Here’s the upshot: Wang only bought the team to leverage for the development, and now he’s huffin’ and puffin’ to get every last sq. ft. of his demands (he won’t). He will then either settle for less, or sell the team to the highest bidder. Wang will not move the team, because it never ever was about the team (or the fans). Bring back Spano!
-
I think a move to Willets Point would also attract to the games many more white collar, younger professionals who live on LI but work in Manhattan. They could easily drive in to work and park at Citifield during the day and then catch a quick train coming home from Penn to Citifield in the evening, go to the game and jump in their cars after with easy access to all major highways going East.
-
Well, nice to see some politicians understand how a mixed use community can make people happy, increase tax revenue, provide housing in a dilapidated area, and allow a pro-sports team to thrive! What’s amazing is some die hards continue to argue that 70 acres of crumbling concrete in Nassau County is superior and preferable to the lighthouse proposal that would develop the land. Honestly, a move to Queens would be better for me, but overall Long Island would suffer. Oh well, sooner or later the political power base of the Kate Murray’s and Sir Williams of the world will crumble, and then maybe private investment and development will be allowed to follow.
-
with election day on the 3rd, something needs to happen at the game following it on that saturday the 7th.. if kate wins something big has to go on to voice displeasure.. if she loses.. it can be a celebration while we play the thrashers.. b/c after that game, we are on the road for 2 weeks…so its gotta be right after the election and on the 7th..thats the day to be heard… the last home game for 2 weeks
-
Everyone must tell their families and friends that KATE MUST GO!
There are way more than 20,000 islander fans and if everyone got a least one other person to vote McElroy we could make a big difference in this election.
-
QUEENS! Better than LI. For so many reasons.
I’ve said it for a year.
-
Politicians are one in the same, at least by McElroy coming here she’s saying that we -as a collective group of Islander die hards who want this team for our kids take their kids to see- can get something we desperately want. Show me where to sign.
-
I hope McElroy makes the Lighthouse her main issue. It’s a very visible issue for a local politician to make her platform about. She must say that if ToH residents want the Lighthouse, their only chance to get it is by voting her in, because is Murray is reelected, there is NO CHANCE of the Lighthouse being approved! Perhaps with a change in politicians, Wang will work exclusivly with ToH rather than with six other suitors.
-
just so everyone knows, despite the fact the town voted overwhelmingly republican-registration has actually flipped in favor of the dems
-
she has my vote hands down
-
For any of us who do not live in the TOH but who live on Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn or where ever, maybe we can all go volunteer for McElroy. Making calls to people’s homes, flyers, and signs all over the place emphasizing job creation, tax revenue, which is needed to prevent others from leaving. I have limited time, but I am thinking if I can help say 1 or 2 days a week, I will try. Maybe we can all pitch in because this is the future of Long Island (Nassau in particular), and the future of our hockey team.
-
Eye — #142 — in the TOH also? I know it has done so in the county.
-
jayk, yes sir, i was suprised to hear so myself and jeff number 144, email mcelroyin09@gmail.com if you want to help

NYC built a 52,000 seat museum in the bronx in two years time and a 42,000 seat ballpark in queens in two years time so I would like to know how anyone posting here believes that Willets Point will take six years to come to an agreement on what should be built there. Where are you people getting this WRONG information from? Only in our crappy Nassau County do things take 10-15 years to decide. Oh and another thing to those who make these false claims about Willets Point. The Lighthouse project if approved {it won’t be] is going to take 10 years to build. I seriously doubt the Lighthouse project would finish before Willets Point would.
-
http://www.arenadistrict.com May I present the successful version of the Lighthouse in Ohio. The man behind it, John H McConnell RIP, is a local hero because of it. I have watched this area and team bloom for 8 years now. What a difference having a hockey team in town makes. It was used as the centerpiece of the developement. Uncle Chalee knows what he is offering. This is what they are turning their back on. MORONS! I wish I could vote there!
PS I grew up on LI and watched the Cup being won at NVMC. Let TOH have their ugly gravel lot and nasty hotel. I am POed all the way in Ohio! Get this thing done or TOH will be the loser, along with Isles fans. -
YES! This is awesome. Just F(orget) the ToH, that Murray itchb and Nassau Co. Just relocate…afew miles away. Wang should get with that Russki who is purchasing the NJ Nets and pour both their monies into a Brooklyn Arena. Thats my sappy love story anyway. MAKE NASSAU A MEMORY.
-
Everyone should read comment 46 and do it, call every day get your neighbors to do it, even out of town republicans should call them.
-
I was all for doing whatever needed to be done to keep them in Nassau but screw it. This town doesnt deserve this team or their fans. Look how much Queens wants the Islanders. It disgusts me how much the TOH seems to not even care one way or the other. They lost the Jets and now are losing the Islanders……It was never a question that Murray was in the pocket of Garden City and now this is what we get.
-
I am born and raised in Nassau County. I live in the town of oyster bay so I cannot vote in the hempstead elections but I have seen what this county and it’s towns can do to a project. My drive to NVMC is literally 7-10 minutes. It will pain me to see this team move away. But let’s be honest with one another. Nassau County does not deserve the Islanders and everything they stand for. Queens is showing they want them more and honestly, they deserve them. I have no problems driving 25-30 minutes west to watch my favorite team play. As a matter of fact, even if they move to Queens, I will still purchase season tickets because I will be excited going to a place that loves my team and has developed an area for all types of activities after a game has concluded.
-
I am a McElroy Republican from Levittown. I think the population of Levittown is 3X bigger than Garden City. We need to get the Levittown vote out for McElroy. I am telling all my friends and family, who may not be following the Lighthouse program as close as we Islander fans are, that Murray will set the TOH back 60 years. There is so much more to the Lighthouse than just the Islanders. It’s called jobs. Clearly Charles Wang bought the Isles because of the real estate development. So what. He has the right to make some money on the deal. He is already in the hole for over $100 million. Who else is going to buy the team and lose $20 million a year?
-
in response to #154 i cant agree more with you. im a republican from levittown too and im NOT voting for murrary, or any incumbent this year. the only problem is murray and hudes are both from levittown originally (hudes still lives there). there are hundreds of signs for both of them by my house. they are gonna own the vote from levittown
-
ill even place mcelroy signs on hudes lawn when they become available
-
I am from levittown as well. I am friends with Hudes son and will happily vote against all of them. They don’t do anything anyway.Vote for the lighthouse. All these politicians are losers. I don’t care who wins as long as we keep the Isles.
-
ME #153 — it doesn’t matter if you aren’t in the TOH. (Well, OK, it matter, but….) You can show your disgust at the Republican opposition/posturing by voting for all Democrats, no matter where you live. A lousy showing on Election Day by the GOP could help persuade them that the old obstructionist politics is not going to continue to work for them. So your ballot can be of assistance in this quest.
-
TOH Resident: 4 family votes for McElroy!
-
The TOH Democrats are campaigning. I am from Levittown, I support the Light House, and I am asking for your vote. http://www.voteforhynes.com
Thank you.
-
Go McElroy!!!
Lighthouse and sexy – what a package deal!!
-
mr hynes you have my vote and support. im tired of the republicans in office for the town of hempstead.
-
Another Levittown resident and his family that will be voting for McElroy!! The truth is that she really could win if everyone who wants her to win actually goes out and votes. I’m sure the percentage of people that live in the TOH that will actually vote is very small. If voter turnout was greatly increased Murray could absolutely lose. How else do you think Jesse “The Body” Ventura became the Governor of Minnesota??? They never saw it coming…..
-
Post 98 – Way to go! That is a great post. If we can just get the apathetic people who never vote to go out there and vote Murray out of office this mess goes away and we finally will have a path forward.
To everyone who lives in TOH – please get out and get this done for LI and the Isles!
-
Kristen’s campaign has been less than stellar. It’s amazing, absolutely amazing that a candidate with at least 15,000 Islander fans as a base has been so quiet. 15,000 of us have waited to join your grass roots campaign…call us we’re here for you Kristen. As an Islander ticket holder since day 1, I hope from the bottom of my aging heart that Charles has a plan to pick up and leave. I’d hate to see the Isles go elsewhere so I’m hoping for the Suffolk based Pilgram State property or Queens. I’m sick and tired of Murray’s B/S political smile. If Garden City and Hempstead let Kristen down, then they’ll deserve Murray, they’ll deserve to see their town become a ghost town…hey that’s the Murray way…but let’s be frank, we LONG ISLANDERS don’t deserve her negative approach to nearly everything I’ve read. It’s time that Charles walks away from this political rag…he’s done more for ALL OF Long Island that Murray will every do for Hempstead alone. How many thousands if not tens of thousands of good folks have worked for Charles through the Isles and Computer Associates alone. Charles is an innovator, a genius, an islander, yes lower case, something Murray will never be able to pride herself on…she nothing but a destructionist.

Can she be in office by tomorrow? haha
