  1. avatar Chris Mc says:

I dont know if CB is going to recap this game or not with a post, but you have to be happy with the effort the Islander forwards put forth in this game. You have to be equally disappointed in the defense and Roloson. Dwayne gets a pass bc everyone has an off night (ofcourse being its Roloson you knew that penalty shot was going in).

But the defense, they are too slow and get beat way too often or caught out of position. And how many times in the first half of the game did they fumble a puck at the offensive blueline and allow an odd man rush. I think its too early for a change but if they keep this defense as is we’re going to have to average 4 goals a game just to be in games all season.

  2. avatar Rick says:

The defense was embarrassing. Half of these guys don’t belong on a NHL roster some nights, and Jack Hillen just doesn’t belong on a NHL roster period.

  3. avatar Cranky says:

The Isles brass are idiots, especially Snow. Wang is an idiot of biblical proportions, hockey speaking. This team sucks beyond belief, they have already tanked the season. Go ahead and move this worthless pile of crap franchise, no one will care. This is already a nightmare and there is no end in sight.

  4. avatar max says:

    SNOW MUST GO

  5. avatar Justin says:

It would be one thing if all Islanders fans thought this franchise was doing everything to be competitive, but we all know that’s not the case. Bringing back the same defense corps we had last year is an insult to a fan base desperate for something to believe in. We have a true No. 1 d-man and a whole bunch of depth guys. Nothing more. No matter what kind of progress the forwards make or how good or bad the goaltending is, the defense will lead this team to the league’s worst record again.

  6. avatar BringBackNyles says:

I only saw bits and pieces since the Yanks are on, but this has a cahnce to be the worst season in club history outside of year one.

  7. avatar hubie39 says:

Brendan Witt is already minus 9!!!!!

  8. avatar Bob says:

Can Roloson please make a save on just 1 breakaway? I don’t think he’s made a save in either shootout or tonight’s penalty shot. He played terrible tonight which put them in a big hole and is the main reason they lost. Tavares, as good as he’s been, needs to find the back of the net more consistently especially with the chances he gets.

  9. avatar max says:

Hey #8 we should be happy with the chances tavares gets cuz tthe other teams best d men always has his butt

  10. avatar The Real JD says:

#3 Cranky you are living up to your name.
It wasn’t that bad. On the first goal what the hell is Bailey doing going behind the net to join Meyer and leave the slot wide open?
Rolo is just terrible on penalty shots.
The Isles battled back and made a game of it.
Buffalo is EXTREMELY well coached. That team plays smart, exciting hockey.
Can we please win a game in October!!!!!

  11. avatar max says:

    bailey =bust

  12. avatar jethro09 says:

This team may never win a game this season. Really, I mean that. Not one win all year.

  13. avatar Justin says:

C’mon Jethro. I can guarantee they will win at least 10…maybe 9..definitely no fewer than 8.

  14. avatar Cs says:

Jethro09..I kinda agree with you..i know its dramatic to say that..but at this time i just cant see this team winning a game…they play like crap..they lose..they play better..they still cant win..I understand this team isn’t supposed to be anything special this year, but the same was said last year..and although we ended up last..we still played ok..this year..i dont even see that..i was just watching this game expecting Buffalo to score…it didnt even suprise me.

  15. avatar potvinrocks says:

you tweetered about how Phoniex is 4-2 playing trap hockey and they have 3 plus years of rebuild. Look how bad Toronto is playing & they didn’t spare a dime on sexy free agent signs. Their is going to be pain for a while still.
Now Tavares should have scored a hat trick in that game. He had the oppertunates. And the islanders have NO depth. There have been 2 goals that Tavares or Okposo have points on. If you can get a Scotty Upshall for Bergienheim, DO IT.

  16. avatar UIF says:

It’s painful to watch this season unfold so far.

  17. avatar Chris TMC says:

Yeah the D definitely sucked tonight, except on the PK when oddly enough they would have more of an excuse to suck. Also very disappointed with Roloson tonight. As soon as I saw that penalty shot was coming, I thought to myself, “A penalty shot is just like the shootout. We are screwed.” Sadly, thats exactly what happened. WTH, why has Roloson not been able to make a single save one on one? Not one single save? Its got to be psychological.

  18. avatar ItsGoodToBeRich says:

    Plus: Okposo-Tavares-Moulson

Minus: Jackman is a punching bag. Please get someone who can fight.

  19. avatar Dorfer81 says:

Pluses: JT, Moulson Golden, Bailey, Hillen

Minuses: Roloson, Streit, Rechlicz, neutralizing Buffalo’s speed, protecting the front of the net

  20. avatar NCislesFAN says:

Who cares bout the Lighthouse…..Put a team on the ice!

  21. avatar volmeeezy says:

very dis-heartening , you try so hard to be excited and support the team , but i just don’t know how much more torture i can take

  22. avatar isles71 says:

First off, I am a lifelong Isles fan (I have 1940 tatoo’d on me for Smitty’s sake). I just do not get what team has become. I understand what we are “trying” to do, but explain to me this “rebuilding” process we are under…again. I know hockey (having been involved in the game over 30 years), and things are amiss on the Island. In the 90′s, we had a reputation of dealing away talent to get the veteren presence to bring us back to the “glory years”. Ray Ferraro said on ESPN in late 90′s, “you want to win a cup, go get yourself some ex-Islanders”. Think of all we gave up in those days for Linden, Clark, Potvin(Felix), drafting Brett Lindros & Scott Scission (instead of Jagr), etc. Wang buys the team and boom, things start to turn around. Even though we lost, Isles-Toronto one of the best series ever…we’re back…or are we???? After several one & done in playoffs , Snow enters and at least tries, loved the Smyth deal, thought Snow had some…magic. But WE played ourselves out of it in Buffalo. Couldn’t keep Blake, Smyth, Poti,…Last year saw some good effort by a team of mostly 3rd liners, but how do you pass on Schenn for Bailey (and don’t tell me about hindsight). Tavares was the right pick but as CB said, 4 picks for de Haan??? With cap room, sign people that WERE available. Boumeester(sp?), Phil Kessel, hell even Tanguay would have meant something, but journeymen AHL guys? So, concerned about team toughness, Bridgeport is 4-0-0 and leads league in PIMS, but Joel has 0 in his game there. Bring up Smith or Joenseuu and Dustin Kohn and cut a D-man to at least send a message you are trying. Snow, you had a set when you traded for Smyth, let see if you still do. We might have the next Mike Bossy in Tavares (dare I say), but I would also settle on a couple more Wayne Merricks’ and Gordie Lanes’…sorry I rambled!!!!! Go ISLES & 1940 forever!!!

  23. avatar isles71 says:

can we change goalies on shootouts/penalty shots???????????? just wondering

  24. avatar goislesgo105 says:

Let the Taylor Hall watch begin!

  25. avatar king says:

    Replace Martinek….asap…

  26. avatar Bigboo says:

Snow should send Witt to the Bridge and take the cap hit like the Rags did with kasperitis a few years back. He has just lost it these past 2 years. Send a message that u are comitted to going young bye getting rid of the worst +/- in the league last year and off to a great start to be worst again this year.

  27. avatar Matt says:

this team is such a joke. thankfully I refuse to spend a penny on them. half of the players on the roster are not even NHL players yet Charles Wang expects us to spend thousands of dollars on this pathetic product? i got news for you Islanders, people are getting sick of the losing.

  28. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Ugh. I really don’t know what else to say anymore. It’s just sad.

  29. avatar Hextall72 says:

#23.. you can change goalies for the shootout. Your taking a chance though bringing in a goalie sitting on the bench for 65min.. It’s something I’m sure they ate pondering and something I hope they are working on..

  30. avatar StevieL says:

Wow! I don’t know what else we can say. Wrecker should be done, he is useless. JT will be a superstar. With a little more strength, I think he would have 8 or 9 goals already! Rolo=horrible tonight. Has it come to this…Yeah! Bailey took some shots!! Time to move KO to another line? Not enough pucks for him and JT. Good thing we added 5 goaltenders in the off season!! Park seems to have lost something over the summer! Going to be a very long year Can this team win 20 games this year?? I think we are ice skating on a Lighthouse Canal before this team competes!!

  31. avatar Merrick says:

Rebuilding is one thing, but putting total crap on the ice ane expecting people to come and pay is another. Apart from goaltending, the organization did nothing in the off-season on its own initiative to improve. Nothing!

That nothing was attempted on the blueline is criminal. The cracks in Witt’s game have been increasing and while Martinek was a surprise bonus in the earlier part of the decade, injuries and time have robbed a good part of his speed and mobility. I’ll give Bruno a pass for the moment, but beyond Streit, is anyone better than a 5-6?

As for the forwards, the only way this team has a prayer to remain competitive over the grind of 82 games is by playing four lines–which is impossible with Recker in the lineup. The second he started skating over to Pominville about 40 feet away, I started yelling at the TV because I knew what was going to happen. That 3-0 lead was game set and match.

This entire mess falls at the feet of Mr. Wang. This is his team, built on his business decisions, and his product–which is total crap.

  32. avatar joey bagodonuts says:

i’m still optimistic. the isles outplayed buffalo tonight. roloson plays this stand-up game. when he drops to his knees, he simply does that and does not extend into the butterfly. his lateral movement is almost nonexistent, and that is what cost us the game tonight. there’s something here…we’re still at the foundation but it’s coming along slowly. bailey showed some improvement tonight, tavares continued to play strongly, moulson is a nice surprise, okposo is vastly improving. the obvious thing is that there is absolutely a self-imposed cap on snow by wang. something is holding him back from getting those few pieces that will greatly improve this team. patience….

  33. avatar Madchef says:

alot of dead weight on this team.amazing that i have lost all my confidence only 5 games into the season. team didnt give up tonight, they have some players and heart but geeze, is the wrecker really that dumb, is witt really that slow, is hillen really that small.

  34. avatar nystrom23 says:

I DVRed the game….the forwards didn’t look too bad…the d-men are non existent outside of streit….myers was widee open on the first goal. The goalies, specifically roloson gets a pass even though he wasnt close to technically sound tonite. He cheated to the middle on the connelly goal and was out paced on the penalty shot.

  35. avatar Chris Mc says:

Obviously I knew going into this game that the Okposo-Tavares-Moulson was the lone bright spot on this team, but the Comeau-Baily-Bergenheim line tonight impressed me. They hustleed, they created opportunities, and in the end they actually scored an Islander goal not created by the first line (granted it was Sutton who scored but on a very nice setup by Comeau. Lets hope Gordon has the sense to leave this line together for a little while and let them develop.

  36. avatar Jim M says:

I agree with you post #30 about moving Okposo. If Weight is going to play the wing bring him up with moulson and tavares. More of a playmaker dishing into the sniper. Okposo goes back with Bailey. Seemed to work nicely parts of 2nd half last season. Mix it up Gordo, winless in 5….

  37. avatar ant says:

Its only 5 games but its tough to watch this team. Our defense is horrible outside of Steit.Witt looks like hes skating in quicksand. We have 4 players up front with promise. All this hype about srempf and all i see is another Tambellini taking up a roster spot instead of having someone with size that we can use upfront. How can we all see this and Snow cannot.

  38. avatar Islesin2010 says:

Lets get positive here people. KO, Moulson, Bergy and Hillen all looked really good tonight. JT created some great chances and just was unable to capitalize on a bunch of them. The defense is too slow. Who ever isn’t too slow is too weak, bad combination.

The best defenseman was Hillen, no doubt in my mind. Stop bashing the guy for whatever reasons you may have. He moved the puck quickly and accurately. His turns were quick, and he even took care of the puck in his own end, and his speed is the best on the team. Reminds me of Campoli.

This team will win games. Albeit not many, they will still have a few bright spots. Mark my words right now, they will have a stretch of 7 wins in 10 games, something like that. If they ever start finishing and getting consistent efforts like tonight, Boston, or Pitt, winning games won’t be a problem.

Rolly looked prettay prettay awful tonight. In regulation time thus far Dwayne has allowed 10 GA while Biron has allowed 6, and I can’t really blame him for the 2 goals he gave up tonight, in just about the same minutes. If he can play well again tomorrow perhaps we see Gordo start stretching Marty out a little bit, giving him maybe 2/3 of the games until Rolly starts earning it. The Isles have yet to give Marty a good effort in his starts. It wasn’t his fault the team played like garbage against Ottawa and L.A. and they were in both games.

  39. avatar doc says:

It’s not so much that Witt is really bad these days… but he’s not even putting forth an honest effort.

    Park – invisible.
    Sim – invisible.
the “Wrecker” – (I can’t spell his name) – is barely an ECHL player. Embarrasing.
Sutton – despite his goal he serves softer hits than Tom Carvel.
Martinek – I like the guy… but he looks lost out there these days.

Obviously it’s been Tavares, Okposo, Moulson, Bergenheim, Steit and dare I say Meyer playing good solid hockey in the 5 games so far.

The rest of the guys ie: Comeau, Shremp, Weight, Bailey etc… have been average at best.

God I love this franchise though.

    DOC

  40. avatar Dan says:

Could everyone please relax. Yes we thought by now that they would have a win by now and they could have easily won all or 1 or 2 of those 3 ot games with a break here and there.
A save would have been nice on any of the first 4 goals especially number 4. The first line has played pretty well every game and JT is definitely getting his opportunities and could have more then the 3 goals he already has. Witt looks extremely slow and he doesn’t seem to fit the system. In more of a trap or defensive system he would not be caught on these one on one situations where a guy with speed can just fly around him. Also switch Bruno back with Striet. That is when he played his best last year. Could they have spent and most likely overspend to get a free agent to come to the Island this summer of course they could have. How many of these guys would we have to get 3 or 4 at least. Also did you see some of the years and salary’s that were given out. Would that have gotten us to the playoffs maybe but in the long run be one and done. How many of us would lose over 20 million a year for 7 years have the world’s worst lease and a pain in the a## in charge of the town were you want to build a new arena plus and overspend on a free agents. Let’s get Hall or whoever is the best draft choice and continue to build from within. Let’s see what happens after the Lighthouse is going to happen or not. Attitudes could change with the owner and then allow the GM to spend a little bit but you also need to make sure it is wisely.

  41. avatar Starscream says:

was at the game tonight…our defense is terrible. We outchanced the Sabres but all Buffalo’s goals were defensive and goaltending mistakes. Takes the wind out of your sails…goal on their first shot, Martinek just falling down three or four times, etc, etc. However, the biggest difference is we were not outplayed, not by a long shot. 39 shots on goal, quality chances. Not the same team as last year, they’ll get it together. Biggest thing to notice, our second and third lines cannot sustain the pressure of the TOM line, so we don’t build momentum. That’s why we don’t draw penalties, not enough time spent in the offensive zone. Time for the Sharks, gulp.

  42. avatar Teddy says:

    #39 Dan,

Totally agree with you, the Isles should have signed a few free agents over the summer. Now they are paying for it by going winless in five.

And also agree that Wang knew what the lease said, and that the team was losing 20 million a year in 2000 when he bought it.

I too don’t understand why we aren’t spending anywhere near what the league allows a team to spend on payroll. We are only handicapping ourselves by having the lowest payroll in the league.

  43. avatar bossjones1 says:

The team that they have out there is absolutely ridiculous. More than half the guys belong in the minors, and the answer most definitely is not bringing up kids that aren’t ready… look at Bailey for gods sake, hopefully they didnt ruin him, he belongs in the AHL. At this point they are just stuck…they will get better and might win some games eventually but I would not spend a single dollar going to a game this season.
This brings up another point, did they really think that getting a couple decent goalies was going to help when they have the worst defense in the league? How about getting one decent goalie and one decent defenseman?

  44. avatar Brian B says:

CB…it’s amazing. We are in a rebuilding year, still a year or two away from even being a contender and we knew that coming into the year. Yet we are all going crazy after 5 games into the season. (This happening with our franchise number 1 goalie not even playing as well).

Not only that, but John Tavares is proving that he’s gonna be a big time player in this league, and he’s certainly worth watching every night.

If we win our next 2 games then we are back to being excited about this team. You gotta love us Islander fans huh?

  45. avatar Ethan K says:

I’m sick and tired of this team… It’s hard to say, but I don’t know how much longer I can stand to be a fan.

I know we’re trying to rebuild, but let’s face it. Our coach is not up to the task, our GM is not up to the task, and our team owner is not in this for hockey.

Rebuilding is a long process, yes, and last year I was very optimistic. But looking at the team now, I’ve lost all positive thought.

We were undersized last year, and had loads of injuries too. But by April, Bailey and Okposo were stepping up their game, as well as Comeau, Neilsen, and other youngsters. Remember when we scored 7 goals on the Devils? The Islanders were close to .500 after the all star break last year. We didn’t lose anybody. WHAT HAPPENED?

Garth Snow has created a lot of problems for this rebuild. At first I agreed his moves, but now that I reflect on it, I can’t. When I see Josh Bailey play, I don’t see a top 10 pick. Kyle Okposo and John Tavares are examples of top 10 picks. We could’ve gotten Luke Schenn or Filatov with that pick instead. This year, we move up far in the draft, which was good, but to pick a small, inexperienced defenseman in De Haan was not a good call. Sure he might get bigger, but can you guarantee anything with that? No. We need someone who is big and physical, like Victor Hedman. Snow always has to pick a player against the odds… just listen to the scouting reports, Garth! And Mr. Wang, you gotta put out an NHL team if you want us to pay NHL prices for NHL tix. We’ve supported your real estate this whole time in hopes you would give us entertaining hockey.

  46. avatar Bobnystrom711OT says:

LOL, I HAVE to laugh, period. It starts at the top boys and girls. We have an owner who is using the Islanders to fullfill his agenda of millions in profits based on a real estate venture, nothing else.

We have a back up goaltender as GM??!!

Chris Dey as President??!! Oh yeah..

We have an AHL coach who is SLOWLY showing his true colors. System, what syatem??!!No NHL experience and that confused look in his face makes my skin crawl.

Look at ALL the negative moves since JT was drafted over this summer..

Josh Bailey is a bust and will continue to show it!

Hillen in place on Gervais, are you kidding me?

How did Witt make this team? HOW???!!!

Yesterday’s comment that Gordon made on team captain Doug Weight should be an indication of where who is coaching this team, an absoloute joke. Nothing makes sense, NOTHING. They made the drafting of JT seem like rocket science, and for this?? One step forward, MANY backwards.

Where is Ted Nolan? Philisophical differences my !@%! Nolan would of made and did make this team better. I have bled Isles since ’75, but I must say, that I am truly disgusted. Wang, Snow, Dey are running this franchise into the ground, wait, already there.

Isles71, post #22, great post and I am right there with you, 1940 still lives..

  47. avatar isles14 says:

thank you #40.for some words of wisdom.just relax and enjoy watching some of these kids play.are we making the playoffs .NO we all knew that coming in.it’s going to take some time.will most of these players be on the team in 3 years. NO.so sit back and enjoy watching jt grow.and i love watching the hustle of young players.and of course lets go islanders!!!!!!

  48. avatar isles316 says:

Roloson was awful and I’m not sure how Rechliz helps us more than Tambellini or anyone else with some sort of skill. I have to doubt that move by the coaching staff.

The Isles lack of production from anyone besides the Tav-Ok-Moulson line is a big deal.

It’s also a great positive to see the first line produce at least 1 goal in every game so far.

  49. avatar Cranky says:

Rebuilding IS one thing – how long did it take St Louis to be a decent team again? What gets my goat is they have some nice young forwards, GATZ for defense and no toughness and they prance these kids out there to essentially feed them to the wolves.

Snow and Jankowski, I’m sorry, they are cut rate evaluators of talent at best. Any one of us could have ran this draft better, TWO GOALIES IN THE EARLY SECOND?

I know they are up against the wall $$ wise, but look at what other teams do – hell, Phoenix is BANKRUPT and they are doing ok. I’m just tired of the whole ordeal, sick and tired.

  50. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Boy, if Bailey just had some EDGE to his game I could better digest the trepidations going forward…still time though.
Did watch the Toronto game the other night…wow! Schenn is not looking so great this season…glad we didn’t bid for Blake (back then), Orr or Komisarek! Whew!
There are going to be great *free agents* every year…certainly don’t feel like the Isles missed out on a once-in-a-lifetime- opportunity last Summer.
Considering all of the TOH/Lighthouse/Moving Van issues I just can’t fault Garth Snow right now. Especially not knowing what Wang and Co. are giving for orders. Plus, if *you’re* a stud free-agent, are the Islanders even in your TOP TEN of places that you want to sign with?!? (Then again, it could be living hell for Komi up in Toronto before his contract is up again.)
If Snow can move Witt this season for something I’ll be happy.
It is eery when you think about the similar KAOS surrounding The Nordiques and Whalers only to have them become incredible franchises (Avalanche/Hurricanes) a few seasons after relocating.
Anyway, win or lose, The Islanders are still my team. Period.
    Go Isles!

  51. avatar Dominic says:

I would imagine even Garth’s hands are tied here. If I was Wang (not a Wang) I would be holding this team at the bottom of the Salary Cap(like he is) and cut everything and everyone from the organization that he can(like he is..radio,coverage, etc..) and not put anymore money into the team than necessary until some future certainty comes about(in the form of the LHP).
To us this is a sporting event and the ultimate goal is to win a Cup or even a game for that matter. To Wang priority is to stop the financial bleeding and put some financial security back into his investment. A winning team is not a long term solution….but with the LHP approved it will become one. I love the Isles but I agree with the man.

  52. avatar Bjorn Holland says:

Unbelievable how bad we are. Especially defense. Why didn’t Snow get 1 or 2 UFA’s this year? And why doesn’t Gordon keep Biron in the net. He is way better than Roloson.

  53. avatar Rish31 says:

Plus- The never say die attitude the team showedafter trailing by 3 goals, 3 times.
Minus- The system. In the defensive zone we are way to easy to play against. The wings sink into the corners way too deep, and the points are wide open, ie. Myers goal last night, and Doughty goal on Monday. When we finally get control of the puck our dmen have no where to go with the puck, as the wings are standing still at the far blueline so the best we can get is a tip deep into the zone. We very rarely come throught the neutral zone as a 5 man unit, but when we do it leads to opportunities and goals ie. Sutton’s goal in the 3rd.

  54. avatar Bossy22 says:

I’m starting to believe that this “overspeed” system is causing more problems then good. The team just appears to be out of position way to much because they overpursue. Scott Gordon should be on the hot seat….

  55. avatar beatlebailey says:

why do I have 8 more payments on my multi year isles season tix subscription? I should have spent that money on yankee playoff tix. What a schmuck!

  56. avatar Jeff in Oyster Bay says:

Can someone please make a big save in goal? What a joke. Who wins a game first the Leafs or us?

  57. avatar art says:

My take of the game-DP is not out of the picture.

  58. avatar DPS says:

And Wang wonders why he is losing money? Look at your product Wanger. Forget the lighthouse, put a good team on the ice in a new arena like everyone else in the NHL.

  59. avatar IslesAl says:

What do you folks think of Bailey? He looks invisible out there, worst than last year. I get very nervous, because our team has “their players” like they know more than the rest of the league combined. Feels like a carry over of the Mad Mike years. Makes me nervous about de Haan. How much did we give up for him- Campoli plus four picks?

  60. avatar steve says:

i like that nobody is currently ripping sim. about time. the guy drives to the net, the puck, the corner, constantly. same with bergy, not afraid of contact, and has skills.
in a game like last nites, there were a few times baily would have gotten knocked off the puck, and he didn’t. he was firing the puck too. there were a few times JT got knocked off the puck, that he wont next year after an off season in the gym. JT is traffic is outstanding.
dont blame the system, theres no system that can work under the goaltending and defense we had last nite. again, a really solid effort, we should have had a better result. but considering the third and fourth goals, and we still got back to 4-2/or 5-3 is impressive.
UFA’s? who did you want to sign that is lighting it up? the leafs are horrendous in both zones. komie for $6+ million is insane. bozak, the guy the leafs signed that you all killed snow for, SENT DOWN!
you don’t make moves to make moves. hillen looked good last nite, nice outlet passes. wrecker isn’t anywhere near ready. adding tamby, isn’t adding toughness. JT is unreal, CdH looks like he’ll be good. thers two pieces added. moulson seems to have that goalscoring knack. hes +3 on a winless team, so hes doing it 5 on 5. possibly another piece.
the wins will come, but those of you thinking eight seed, be realistic. we will be 10 or 15 points better then last. year

  61. avatar Paul P says:

There really is no reason to freak gyus. We werent going to win the cip this year , do you really want to finish in 9 th place or do you want taylor hall. I don’t want to lose every game either but lets face it we werent going to win the cup this year

  62. avatar Paul P says:

but I must agree that this was a terrible…terrible draft with the exception of jt, pushed us back a year imo
    2 goalies is awful

Bailey needs a year in Bridgeport. The fact that he was drafted in the manner that he was, and his continuing mishandled development represent the biggest questions I have about the competence of the current management and coaching staff.

Jon Sim needs to be waived again. It is impossible to fathom how he, and to a nearly similsr degree Park, are taking ice time from guys like Tambellini, Smith and Joensuu on a REBUILDING LAST PLACE TEAM.

Biron needs to be the #1 and given the minutes until and unless DP returns. Roloson is not sharp and has a gaping 5 hole. Throw in his inability to compete in the shootout, which is the likely place that any of this teams wins (all 20 of them this year) might come from, and it’s a no brainer.

Finally, can anyone tell me what, exactly, Scott gordon’s system is? What happened to “overspeed”? He looks more lost this year than last, but seems to have now accepted losing without showing much passion.

OK, really finally, am I the only one who thinks that Biron was a no brainer to start last night against the team who gave up on him, against the guy who won out in the battle to be #1 in Buffalo? Gordon constanly leaves me scratching my head in his ability to always ignore the obvious and suffer for it.

Yes we are in a rebuliding mode – yes there is ? a plan. Yes to all. But to say what did we expect in a rebuilding mode, we knew we would be bad, etc is a farce. AND a joke -this team is a JOKE – spin it anyway you can. 5 gamesin? Yes only 5 games in—lets look at the “bad” teams that finished just ahead of us last year.
Tampa – 6 points Colorado 11 pts Phoenix, yes Phoenix 8 points Atlanta 6 points in only 4 games – Do you see where I’m going here??? They are “rebuilding” also. We are a JOKE – Lets sign and draft some more goaltenders. THE TRUTH!!

  65. avatar Cs says:

I understand that this ia rebuilding phase..we all get that..i think we’re all just frusturated because we are seeing NO improvement…I know were not gonna be anything great this year..but i would enjoy to see some improvement from our players from last year…the most frusturating part is that it seems as though we’ve gotten worse! That’s why everyones so annoyed..and the fact that Gordon seems to be doing nothing about it…Wrecker better not be in tonight..especialy after last night.

You guys are unbelievable. What’s SO hard to understand?!? They are going to build this team through the draft. They are doing what Pitt did. And just for the record, while Pitt “added a few veterans to help with the rebuild”, they still finished AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE FOR THREE + SEASONS! You people who don’t have the “stomach” to watch and are “disgusted” don’t get this way of rebuilding, and you probably never will. They will PROBABLY finish last in the league again this year. Deal with it. I have. I dealt with it when they went through the 90′s and MISSED THE PLAYOFFS 7 straight years. Made it that much sweeter when they got in in 2002 and had a memorable series with the Leafs. I think some of you really deluded yourselves into thinking they were going to contend for a playoff spot. I would have LOVED that surprise, but you have to be realistic. Up until last night, they haven’t been blown out. They are IN every game. (Even against LA it was only 2-1)They HAVE been competitive. They just haven’t WON any of the games.

THREE things this year and it’s a success:

    1. Further development of our young guys.
    2. Lighthouse gets green light.
    3. If they DO finish dead last, win the lottery and draft TAYLOR HALL.

    See you at the game.

    PS: They’ll win tonight.

    GO ISLES

Why does everyone hate Bailey. The kid is 20 years old and for the most part he doesn’t have the best linemates. You can pretty much forget sending it back to the point for a shot or even make a play with it unless Streit is back there. At this point I hope that they can even just hold it in and you can pretty much forget that if witt is back there. When Bailey was playing with KO late last year he seemed to be playing well. Does he need to get stronger of course he does. But if we sent him down to Bridgeport he would put up Tamby like numbers down there but he needs to do it on this level so just give him time.

  68. avatar UIF says:

I hear what the “what did you expect” people are saying. Really, this is a team that was devoid of talent in the system to start with, and now is forced to operate on a shoestring budget. Do the math…

But people also say “look at Pittsburgh” as a model of what we can become, and that’s where the frustration is. The last time the Islanders actually won a playoff series was the last time the Penguins were a good team. We’ve been mired between mediocrity and embarrassment throughout Pittsburgh’s entire bottoming out/rebuilding phases.

And we’re going in circles, it seems: some promising young players with no support around them, a laughably low salary structure, head-scratching draft decisions, and the organization’s future is in doubt. We can say it’s different all we like, but it’s hard not to think about the mid to late 90s.

  69. avatar The Truth says:

UIF – GREAT post!!!! Its frustrating watching all of this. the horrific Avalanche last year, who looked worse than us, has 11 points already. Phoenix has won 4 games, etc.

  70. avatar Big Van Vader says:

    1. If they start trading Tavares, Bailey and Okposo away for Trevor Linden, THEN I’ll get pissed.

    2. ->We’ve been mired between mediocrity and embarrassment throughout Pittsburgh’s entire bottoming out/rebuilding phases<-

That’s mainly because when Snow took over our prospect pool was COMPLETELY empty due to Mad Mike. More than likely, if Milbury had not done any of those insane deals and kept Luongo, Bertuzzi, Mccabe, and drafted Gaborik, this team would ALREADY have been contending for the past 5 years. For me, considering the path he TRIED to take with the Smyth fiasco before deciding to go the Pittsburgh route, Snow gets a B, thus far.

Also, the Lighthouse approval and building corrects alot of the problems. You would believe that with the building and new revenue streams that you can sign experienced HIGH END free agents and the low salary structure becomes a thing of the past.

    We would hope.

I started out writing about the players and who did well and who didn’t. But the more I thought about it, one thing outweighed all the others. The coaching has to be better. Granted last night the D was especially bad and goaltending equally bad, I almost never see this team adjust to what the opponent is doing. this team is becoming too predictable. If you have a system that works well, you can say to all the others “come try and beat me”. But when they beat you on a regular basis, you had better come up with something else.

And I also agree with randy#59, How could gordo not start Biron? What was he thinking?

  72. avatar Islebethere4u says:

    I meant randy #63

  73. avatar jonsson3 says:

Please get rid of Witt!! 4 out of 5 goals he was on the ice. Enough already.

  74. avatar Mario says:

I love Witt but he is terrible so far this year. Tavares easily had a hat trick last night. Was Okposo playing last night? He did nothing that I could remember. After the first line is on the ice, change channels because the other 3 are doing nothing.

  75. avatar louie dapuck says:

Did you all really expect the Playoff’s. The system was bare ,its only year 2 of the rebuild. Bailey will be good, enough with Luke Schenn already. Another year or two of drafting and developing. Look forward to 2012..
