JOEL RECHLICZ SENT TO BRIDGEPORT
Now let’s see if the Sound Tigers play him

1:30 pm - The tip was when Scott Gordon, again, pointed out how The Wrecker had seen more ice in the NHL than he’d gotten so far in his career in the American League or the Coast. Fairly certain Joel has a lot of people rooting for him.

Reasons Why Rob Schremp Should Have Played In The Home Opener.

No reason for Rechlicz, Jackman and Thompson all being dressed, none the less on the same line. Eliminated one of them and adding Schremp would have added more offensive punch that night. Given, we haven’t seen him play in an Islanders uniform yet, we sure could of used those hands and moves for the shootout. It’s to early for Tavares to be out there. Let him learn his enemy’s first.

  2. 2 Zach teller

I have this gut feeling tamby is going to be the healthy scratch next game.

  3. 3 Examiner

Schremp was with the team for only two practices before opening night and was not ready to play in the NHL with a completely new system. I liked the use of Jackman, Rechlicz, and Thompson on opening night. It gave the team a jolt in the first period after going down 1-0.

When Schremp is ready, possibly for Thursday, then I agree. But let’s not compare him to Tavares. I mean, the guy has only played in 7 career NHL games. Besides, Tavares seemed to have pretty good hands all game Saturday and letting that shootout attempt cloud that is not fair to him.

  4. 4 Mike from Sarasota

I think you may be right about Tambellini judging from the lines at practice today.

    Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
    Bergenheim-Weight-Sim
    Schremp-Bailey-Hunter
    Comeau-Park-Jackman
    Tambellini-Thompson-Rechlicz

  5. 5 vukota

New isles GM- How many games have you seen Schremp play? That’s what I thought….

  6. 6 Staten Islander

They have a logjam at forward, someone had to go down. He’ll be back

  7. 7 Rich

I really like that line of Schremp-Bailey-Hunter…Hunter’s got a good shot, always has, just never had a guy to get him the puck! (Enter Bailey)

  8. 8 J

good lines . . . next stop stanley cup finals

  9. 9 Blizzard

…enough with the Schremp nonsense. Tambi will not be a healthy scratch next game either. Sim might be…or at least should be. The wrecker is not a bonafide heavyweight and as such has no buisness taking up a roster spot. If he fought Godard and held his own, which isnt likely maybe but well he didnt. And if he did he would have been a punching bag. Not a good way to rally your teamates. I support this move.

But who is out heavy weight? Who is gonna throw down when someone runs our young talent? This must be addressed and fast.

  10. 10 Jim

schremp burger, schremp pie, schremp and beans, schremp…………;)

  11. 11 Jason

Sim wont sit. He played well Saturday. Thought Tambs did as well.

Taking Wrecker out of those lines above gives us 23 on roster.

  12. 12 Kaszycki's Krew

Bring the Wrecker back for the Oct 28 game vs Rag$. Injuries will clear roster spots for some players - as injuries are a fact of life.

Also, need to make a decision on Schremp - so he has to play. Sim is playing his way back onto the team……to Tamby’s detriment. Yet, Sim is the guy I would sit for Tamby. As much as I love the Wrecker - he should be enlisted for games vs Rag$, NJ, TOR, PHI and PIT….( i.e. teams in our division/conference with high GOON content)

  13. 13 JD (e_godard)

Im rooting for Joel. Any physical games we play this year he should be on the Ice for us and not in bridgeport.

  14. 14 The New Isles GM

Guys, I’m looking to start fights on here. All I’m saying is, Schremp has put up a decent amount of points in the AHL, and our fourth line was a bunch of plumbers. A big part of our physical presence all game in the home opener was Witt, and you can’t deny that. It seemed like every time the fourth line was out, they broke down in their own zone. There was a 3 on 1 opportunity and Thompson missed the net. Of course we want him to score, but atleast hit the net. Tavares said it himself, once he learns the goalies, he might be better in the shootouts. He just has to play against all of them first. Hence why I made a comment about putting him out their too early. 2 practices or not, Schremp would have seen the 3rd period more then Rechlitz. The guys a bender….come on’

  15. 15 kevin27NYI

    damn!

  16. 16 Joe in Massapequa

I would have loved to see a Wrecker vs. Godard fight to see where he stood with one of the better heavyweights in the league. Unfortunately that didn’t happen but hopefully the Wrecker can sharpen up his skating and hitting ability. I miss the days of the big hits that good ol’ SW used to dish. Let Wrecker get some pointers and then some pointers on how to use the fists and we have ourselves our man.

  17. 17 Chris Mc

Blizzard I’ll bet the farm unless omeone gets hurt in the next practice that Tambellini and Thompson are healthy scratches. Gordon already said Weight and Comeau are playing. The 5th line in the practice leading up to Saturdays game was Comeau-Weight-Schremp and all 3 were scratches for whatever reasons. Now todays 5th line was Tambs-Thompson-Rechlicz. Rechlicz is already gone. Lets do the math.

  18. 18 randy boyd

Holy not learning from your mistakes! I know he’s not a real heavyweight, but Rechlicz is the closest we have. Again our guys will be unprotected from thuggery. Jackman and Thompson are game, but clearly second tier guys who always end up on the bad end of a real fighters wrath. Witt and Sutton never win against anyone.

Maybe in ode to last year, we follow up on another bad idea and we waive Roloson and Biron and find a couple more career beck up AHL guys.

When will this group learn that you need a real fighter in any lineup? I mean, are we so scary talented deep that there is no room for a guy like that on this team, yet the cup champs can afford one?

  19. 19 mw147

Wrecker will be up and down all year. He is not going to play every night with the Isles and needs the ice time to improve his game.

  20. 20 nystrom23

Let Wrecker improve down at the bridge, he should be back though on the 28th when we play the Rags…someone needs to taken on Brashaer

  21. 21 James

Wouldnt you agree that it is a very very good thing that we are debating who should be in the lineup and who isnt? It means we have some depth in the organization finally

  22. 22 Chris TMC

At this point in time, I believe all the guys who CAN go up and down WILL go up and down. It will switch up, but that is whhat I see happening. This is the time to try out players and see what works, anyway- so it isnt a bad thing.

  23. 23 UIF

Weight, Schremp, Comeau, and Nielson are all guys who were not in the opener who will be in the lineup regularly at some point. So the two-way contract guys like Thompson and Rechlicz will probably be sent down/called up a lot. They’ll probably cycle guys like Tamby and Schremp in and out of the lineup for a while to see who takes the opportunity and runs with it…that’s a good thing, imo.

  24. 24 Jromo

New Isles GM…Tavares earned his spot in the shootout. A goal and an assist on top of solid play in both zones all night. Yes he missed the net, but Gordon did the right thing to reward him for 3 periods of solid hockey.
I’m hoping that we got something good in Schremp too, but there is a reason he has only played 7 NHL games so let’s hold off on singing his praises until he gets a few games under his belt.

  25. 25 Joe

This is silly, Rechlicz is much more necessary than Sim or Tamby or Thompson or anyone. This team is small and we finally have a star, now, he will get run out of the building and the Isles have no answer for it.

  26. 26 mt275

With some many players coming back, it feels like an extended training camp.

  27. 27 Patrick

Rechlicz barely belongs in the ECHL, he adds nothing to this team. Maybe he can improve his game, but in the mean time they are tough enough without him. If they need an enforcer that badly a trade needs to be made. Even in only 2.5 minutes a game Rechlicz is a liability.

  28. 28 Joe

24- You clearly have shown with that post that you have no idea what the role of an enforcer is in the NHL.

  29. 29 Examiner

Joe - Love Rechlicz but I don’t see how his 3 minutes of ice time is worth the spot of someone like Schremp or Tambellini who can play 15 minutes and provide some upside. Plus, the kid is 22 years old, needs time to develop a game. Guys like Jackman, Witt, Sutton, and Hunter need to step in for the physical stuff. Or at least hold us off until Matt Martin.

  30. 30 Geoff L

the funny thing is teams that win championships dont have all of the same players that bring the same things to the table, it will be funny to see how jackman and thompson respond to colton orr, donald brashear, riley cote, derek boogard, and all the rest of the heavys, there goes all the toughness out the door.

  31. 31 orngfan

the only crazy thing is that nate thompson still has a place on this NHL roster. nate thompson must have some dirt on gordon for him to keep him around like this..

  32. 32 bob l

    cautionary notice to the
‘TAVARES FOR EVERY SHOOTOUT CAMPAIGN’ people…
    tavares record in shootout (OHL)
    is (kinda) poor:
    9 of 32

just not his thing…yet… if you wanted a shootout stud, you should have screamed for matty duchene at the draft

  33. 33 jason

I thought Tambellini looked pretty good last game

  34. 34 jason

o, and can we trach our players how to at least hit the net, or goalie in a shoot-out

  35. 35 Dorfer

A player who barely managed to skate out for introductions without falling should not be on an NHL team.

  36. 36 terry

rechlicz should play until snow can get a heavyweight to protect the young guys.the isles also needs a coach who will protect the team when the need arises.26 writes jackman, witt, suttonand hunter can protect them, he hasnt seen them fight

  37. 37 Richie66

Tavares was on the shootout only because he deserved it for his performance that game, otherwise I would have made him sit it out, no need to put any more of the crazy pressure he is getting now. This is Tamby’s year, if he still cant find the back of the net he needs to go back to the bridge. To me it seemed that the team wasnt rushing the puck as hard as they should. I counted a couple of times in which a isles played waited for ther puck to come to them instead of moving up on it. Still great game though and will take the 1 point

  38. 38 vukota

Dorfer half the guys stumbled with that stupid rug during introductions. if we went by your theory they would have played with 10 guys lol

  39. 39 KO21

I thought it wasn’t fair to Bailey to stick him with grinders like Sim and Hunter and then to criticize him on his effort…Hunter Bailey and Schemp might be good…Bailey is a play maker and needs finishers on his line…Hunter can do it but hes more of a grinder and so is Sim…I say put hunter on his line and another skilled scorer on his wing…2 grinders is just not good IMHO…Taveras and Okposo got the top line minutes…I think Bailey deserves it more…Its his 2nd year and hes bulked up…

  40. 40 KO21

I just cant believe Tamby has turned into a 4th line grinder…He’s gotta be disappointed in himself since he cant figure out how to score at this level and has conceded to be a grinder….

  41. 41 bob l

KO21, i hear you, but if bailey is going to earn more ice time he’s going to take it from Weight, not Tavares, imo…

i’m sad for the wrecker, but maybe we can find some life in the schremper (needs a better name)

  42. 42 Strummer's Army

R U Kidding me? Who’s going to handle Ott’s tough guys? Jackman? We already know that’s not the case. The Isles play Boston on Saturday, do you know how many really excellent fighters they have? Great let’s see Lucic kill Witt again.

I totally agree that Richelcz needs more playing time in the AHL and that is great but when you have no enforcer you can’t send him down. BS and an idiot move by Snow & Gordon.

I don’t think Bridgeport plays again until the weekend. That means moron Gordon is planning on facing the Boston Bruins with nothing. They are going to kill us. They are a huge and mean team. They roughed up the Islanders really bad last season and it’s going to be worse this year.

Sure no room for an enforcer but tons of room for Moulson who’s been in at least two other organizations and is only on the team and Tavares line because they have a longterm family relationship.

    Sim who sucks beyond belief.

Tambelleni who is improving but still.

    Thompson……..

Those are some guys who should be sent to Bridgeport (and half the defense).

    STUPID!

The other alternative is they are so cheap they are sending him down to save a few bucks for a few days.

  43. 43 Rish31

This move makes sense. With Weight, and Comeau and Schremp in, someone has to sit. Not that the Isles want him to have to but Brendan Witt is more than capable of “protecting” our stars. The wrecker doesn’t bring as much to the table as Schremp, Tamby or Sim. And to all the fans who beat up Sim and Tambellini, they both played well in the opener, and look much different from last season.

  44. 44 Examiner

33 - I did see Jackman and Witt both fight Saturday night. Witt’s antics even led directly to the Isles first goal. And all I said was those guys need to step up, not that I think they could go up against heavyweights of the league in fist fights. This is not about fights. It’s about hitting, aiding teammates, and going after other team’s players.

You don’t have to win fights to protect your teammates. If we get one heavyweight, that guy gets a major, then once again we’re susceptible to getting pushed around.

  45. 45 kevin27NYI

dorfer, what about streit at the all star game? we would be terrible without him lol

  46. 46 joe

Examiner- Hunter doesn’t fight and is bad hwne he does. Witt shouldn’t be fighting and Sutton has a bad shoulder. That leaves Jackman, not exactly a deterrent considering the Rangers have the toughest guy in the league. Tambellini and Shremp have both had their chances, both have been highly under achieving.

  47. 47 Richie66

You can tell Sim is playing with everything he has, ala Steve Webb and throwing his body around nicely, he should get more ice time if he keeps up the effort. Bailey should get PP1 ice time along with Weight, Tavares and KO. Bergy looked so slow, he cant be 100%. Sucks that there is such a time lag between the 1st and 2nd game

  48. 48 Gutty34

Dont forget - Sutton is a big boy too and can hold his own. I think we were the more physical team Sat. No one was pushed around. Not to say it wont happen but youth and energy go a long way. Many of the enforcers in this league are old fogeys - the day of 2 minute guys who can fight are slowly dwindling. You need a guy who can play 8 minutes - put up 15 -20 points in a season and fight when necessary. I am also not sure why we are bashed for being small. All 3 guys on the top line are close to 6′ and 200 ibs. These guys are young and will continue to bulk up. Hunter is no pushover - bergs is definately not a pushover. Weight can hold his own. Etc…I would prefer we had a few 6′ 3′ 220 guys but Martin is in the wings with others like Joensu. Give it time. Every media outlet said that the one team that can scare any team on a given night is the isles. Nice to see some positive words written. They will open some eyes. And dont bash Moulson. Sometimes a simple legit chance and the right players around you can make a career. Look at Gomez - thrived with his linemates and system in jersey and fell apart in NY. I like the depth with Comeau and Weight back and Schremp stepping in. Heck - I even saw Tamby on the 4th line hitting all game. First time he wasnt soft and petrified to use a shoulder.

  49. 49 Strummer's Army

#47 Sim plays nothing like Steve Webb.

  50. 50 justin

Should ice a tough team! Boston has a tough winger on each line, no need for a heavy. Look at the exhib . vs. Calgary with their full line up. Grit on each line is the key, bring up the young guys from the bridge and Boston has a tough night.

  51. 51 Richie66

#49 Wasnt saying he played like Steve Webb, only that he was playing with all his heart and giving it all like web would do each night.

  52. 52 Mike from Oceanside

    #10 above…that’s hysterical.

  53. 53 Examiner

Joe - Once again, I wasn’t talking about fighting. Gutty said it all. We didn’t get pushed around and we were the more physical team that night. We just need to keep that up. It’s not all about fighting, it’s about the perception of toughness and backing up one another.

  54. 54 CJCB

Call me when they bring the Wrecker back! Islanders r back to being the softest time on ice. I’ll see ya when its over.

  55. 55 JJT9090

Shremps’s gonna end up playing with Comeau and Bailey. He and Comeau already have had past success when they played together at some junior event.

    Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
    Comeau-Bailey-Shremp
    Bergenheim-Weight-Hunter
    Jackman-Park-Sim/Tambs.

when franz comes back that third line would look pretty sweet.

  56. 56 sparta

i agree 100% with post 1 shremp should be dressed Rechlicz is a non factor in the nhl right now

  57. 57 Joe

53- I respect your opinion on that but again, I disagree. Last season, no Rechlicz or Fritz we were pushed around….a lot. Watch it happen again.

  58. 58 Word

Thoughts on picking up Josh Gratton off waivers? Believe he was waived by Atlanta. He could be a solve…

  59. 59 a REAL hockey fan

Cmon John Sim tough and in the same sentence as Steve Webb? CMON GUYS PLEEEAAZZEE wake up!

The Islanders are a smallish team and are NOT going to magically grow and get bigger/stronger over a 80 game NHL schedule - I think its this silly talk to say ‘this 1 has to step up and that 1 has to step up’, ok maybe for a game or 2 they might but if its NOT there style or tempermant/makeup its not there style or temperment or makeup! — u cant make a poodle a pitbull!!!!

Hockeys a GREAT and UNIQUE game of speed, skating, skill AND physicality, hitting and brawn mixed in (Thats why I LOVE hockey for that very reason) - u need a team with all elements and right now the Islanders are light in every deparment including size/hitting!

Its a looooong NHL season with highs + lows, i think the Wrecker has a BRIGHT future and will be on the ‘bridgeport express’ going back + forth most of the season — hes a puppy who has 2 develop! PATIENCE Isle fans patience —- Lets go Islanders!!

  60. 60 RPchief

Rechlicz is a waste of space. You guys sit on here and bash Thompson and Tabellini are strong skaters and can handle the puck. Rechlicz can not skate
(see player intro from Sat. or any shift he has had.) We need team toughness. Guys sticking up for eachother, let the other team know their there. Lets get our skill guys out there.

  61. 61 DLR

Tamby and strong should never be in the same sentence. Tamby sucks.

  62. 62 JTorBust

#58 Gratton is a complete garbage pail and by no means the answer. Garth needs to realize his young prize possesions need some muscle.

  63. 63 JPinVA

Wrecker to BP isn’t such a bad thing. Not having a “heavyweight” isn’t so bad either.
    1. Wrecker is on the ciusp of being a contributing member of a good hockey team. He needs time to work on his NHL level one on one skills and defensive play. He’ll get that in BP. He’ll get 5 mins in Uniondale.
    2. Saturday the officials got it RIGHT. Witt delivered a clean hit. Malkin comitted interference and McKee was unavailable for a dog’s age. You can say that one good check and two bad responses kept the Islanders in that game. Witt, by the way, is a “Nolan type player”.

  64. 64 JPinVA

    3. If a tree falls in the woods… If you don’t have a heavy the only thing you’re missing is the obligatory moronic fight from the face off against the other team’s heavy. The NHL is supposed to stop that… so a “HW” is a waste of a roster spot if they can’t play. I’d rather see a guy who can play, and drop the gloves if he has to… Wrecker and martin will fill those roles… and Jackman isn’t so bad as a fourth liner who pushes the action.
This is another example of Snordon getting it right.

  65. 65 Strummer's Army

#60 Gordon and Snow disagree with you. They constantly point out what a good skater Riechlecz is. “Team Toughness” has always been code for, “We don’t have any real fighters and we are praying that nothing more then pushing and shoving goes on because if the other team wants to fight everyone will find out how much tougher the other team is.”

Isles have to have a heavyweight. Until Snow grabs one and some reinforcements Riechlecz needs to be on the roster. He’ll be a great enforcer and one capable of playing good minutes when he’s done developing. I have no problem with him doing that in the AHL except it leaves the Isles defensless.

  66. 66 Leviticus

Haha…. Some much time wasted talking about a guy who can’t play hockey. Who will handle the 4mibute per game ‘tough’ (waste of space) guys on the other team. More WWE talk. How about focusing on the possibility of an additional offensive line with Bailey, Schremp, Hunter… Or if our #1 line will look as good, or even a number 3 line with offensive upside? No, endless talk about Rechlitz…yawn.

  67. 67 CJCB

#64 97% of the players(yes the players that play the game) voted against that stupid rule talking affect. It is what it is, they dont want to get rid of it so its not going anywhere. Look around the league fighting already is up, we already are in the bottom of the league in team fighting and it’s only 1 game in. I really cant stand watching guys just skate around and not score because thats what you see with more than half the islanders team, what good is skating if you cant score, i would rather watch guys fight than guys just skate around, pretty BORING stuff if you asked me.

  68. 68 CJCB

Brideport just signed their own Enforcer Gilles because the Islanders didn’t provide them one. So they are going to sit one of the Islanders miniature prospects and play an Enforcer instead! Nice to see one part of the organization realize the importance of an Enforcer. Now if we can only get the Islanders to figure it out.

  69. 69 a REAL hockey fan

#66 - Who exactly “has skill” to replace a physical player? the Islanders dont have it, sorry but thats a joke!

WWE talk? - no offense but how long have you watched hockey? Im not trolling, im being serious - ive watched for 25 years and you need skill/speed for sure but you also need some size/grinders to go with “the team”! Over the course of a NHL season there will be games where your tested physically.. Ive said it before and ill say it again. If u lose it sucks, if you lose AND get pushed around and muscled, it REALLY REALLY SUXXX

Team toughness is ok, but u still need some real BEEF - The wrecker is 22 yrs old and is a decent skater, lets give the kid a chance to develop - The Isles are young and small and need ALOT

  70. 70 terry

When the isles start to lose the guy’s who are going to score our goals because of the other team taking advantage of them, then every one who is against a hevyweight will change their mind. Team toughness is having guys who can protect their own safty we dont have any off that

  71. 71 JPinVA

#64… I don’t know where you got that stat, but I’d love to hear their reasoning. I think even the NHLPA would benefit from having a deeper player pool where tough guys were able to play 8-10 mins or get time in the middle six. Guys like Fritz can’t play for teams like the Isles because Gordon can’t afford not to roll four… That’s why a full roster for this team can’t be successful without Wrecker or Martin maturing into at least what Jackman has become.
If you want a heavy that can’t play in the third, then Gordon has to go.
