How the Calgary Flames got swine flu shots before thousands of other Albertans
Live Chat Tonight: On election night, a majority of fans voted for another Point Blank live chat tonight, beginning at 7:00 as Jeff Tambellini and the Islanders play in Buffalo. Same two rules in effect as the first three we’ve done: no baseball talk and get all your rants out about HD, The Plus, the radio situation and all other broadcast issues by the start of the second period. Thanks and I’ll talk to you tonight.
*
Kate Murray wins re-election as Town of Hempstead Supervisor in another landslide, but the big news is Tom (The Broker) Suozzi’s 237-vote lead over Ed Mangano for Nassau County Executive. Think it’s possible Suozzi took his power and support for granted? Oh yeah.
No matter what, it’s just too early for anyone to declare with, uh, certainty, what the election day results mean for the Lighthouse Project. You can make a case positively and negatively at every angle.
I’lll just say this for the 100th time: get thee to Queens, Charles. If you don’t have a Lighthouse deal for a shovel in the ground in the 2010 offseason, and do not make any progress with a Queens, Brooklyn or Suffolk (in that order), it will be impossible for any fan to focus on Islanders Hockey.
*
Scott Gordon to Point Blank when asked for the biggest reasons for his club’s 4-0-2 streak:
“The goaltending had been good, now Dwayne and Marty have been difference-makers.”
“Consistency in our decisions with the puck.”
“Overall commitment by the players to do the right things. The best part of it is, they’re doing it for each other.”
Besides the stark improvement in the faceoff circle by his team, Gordon also singled out the significant impact a healthy and effective Andy Sutton has had the last two weeks.
*
Martin Biron gets the start in goal. The rest of the lineup should be the same, although there has been some buzz about some banged up or ill players. Make sure to read Katie Strang, who is in Buffalo.

Marty: The aspect ratio of HDTV, and regular broadcast are different. The screen image actually get stretched out on the HDTV. The puck becomes a blur. Try changing the TV aspect ratio to 3:4, you will see a black bands left, and right. It will actually give you a sharper picture, even if you get a smaller screen image.
-
Marty, Try switching your aspect ratio on your TV from 16:9 to 4:3. Not sure how to do that on your TV, but check your manual. It obviously will not be as good as HD but it might be a bit better. Hope this helps.
GO ISLES! -
Don’t strech or expand your Standard Definition picture. When you go from an HD channel to an SD channel, your TV should not switch from HD to SD. The SD picture should have the bars (wings) on the sides. The picture will look a lot better this way.
-
Does anyone know the reason why cablevision can’t add an HD channel in the 700′s for MSG Plus 2? I don’t understand this. Its really sad Kate Murray won by 30% last night. The Dems messed up by putting up a non candidate & spent no $ on this race. T
-
“Make sure to read Katie Strang, who is in Buffalo.”
Yeah..OK Chris…are you gonna pay the $250 or whatever it is so I can login and read some crappy coverage? I didn’t think so….
As for the HD issue, the settings on my TV are when you are watching a standard channel, it is shows at 4:3, and in HD at 16:9. I hate forcing non-HD to fill my screen. Now, standard channels look FINE on my tv, but it is the OVERFLOW channel that is the issue…the specific channel they choose to place the game on is a low quality channel…this is the problem.
Also, when they re-air the game say around 1am on MSG+ they still don’t offer us the HD version. They do the same thing when the game DOES air in HD to begin with…the 1pm rerun sans intermissions give sus the HD broadcast,,,but they CUT THE SIDES OFF! They are cropping the 16:9 image to 4:3!!
Sorry. Rant over.
-
Dolan restricts Islanders in HD (I still prefer having Fios over Cablevision) and now makes Isles fans pay to get a Newsday article on the Isles. These restrictions for Isles fans just makes me appreciate Point Blank that much more. THIS is the only Islanders coverage I will ever pay extra for. Thanks CB
-
Re: HD – The fact that the Isles wend up on the non-HD overflow channel more often than not as well as being sick of Cablevision is exactly why I went to FiOS and will never return. Sooner or later, FiOS will get MSG HD, and for now I’ll just deal with it.
Re; Suozzi – he leads by 257 now…there are 12K absentee ballots yet to be counted, so it isn’t. You may wind up seeing Kate Murray AND a new NC Executive when it’s all said and done.
-
Suozzi may have taken his support for granted, but it would help if democrats on Long Island actually gave a damn and voted in local elections. Republicans come out and vote and my democratic bretheren do not. I guess we get the government we deserve.
-
I agree Chris. This Lighthouse situation needs to be settled quickly one way or another.
-
Sabres haven’t played since the loss on the Island…they’ve probably been stewing for a while and will likely come out hard. They have Gaustad and Kaleta back as well, so they’ll be a much more physical team. Miller won’t be letting up easy goals either, I imagine.
Just hope the Isles can stay focused and not let the winning streak go to their heads. They’re still an inferior team to Buffalo talent-wise and will succeed only if they leave it all on the ice like they’ve been doing.
-
I have been checking out Katie’s blog since its inception and it leaves much to be desired. However, I would still check it out if it were free but for $250 sorry no thanks.
Lets go Isles tonight!! Should be a fun one to watch. -
While I agree that the Lighthouse needs to be settled and games broadcast on non-HD stations are a misery to watch, not one person has posted on here about tonights game. Unreal!!
Regardless of whether or not the boys win their fifth straight game tonight I’m more concerned about them playing good smart hockey and giving it 110%. If we do that it’s all going to depend upon how the Sabres come out to play and the bounces that we get. I’m sure Buffalo is going to be hungry after we embarrassed them terribly on Saturday 5-0. Biron needs to stay consistent, we need to keep winning faceoffs and finishing our fore checks. Lets Go Islanders!!! -
Chris, it’s starting to seem beneath you the incessant promoting of Katie Strang. A), she’s not a good hockey writer B) Newsday coverage of the Islanders has stunk for years (the editors allocation of space, that is — I’ve enjoyed Greg Logan and Herrmann’s coverage — Alan Hahn was just awful, good riddance). So please cut out the pitches for Newsday and just do what you do well, and that’s reporting on Islanders hockey. Thanks.
-
The Islanders tend to lose in Buffalo, so I wouldn’t expect the “winning streak” to go to their heads for very much longer.
-
cablevision owns fuse hd btw…
and thanks to them also for giving me 2 IFC HD channels which run identical programming…so why is msg+2 still in SD? way to come thru on your “all 9 ny sports teams in hd” claim — liars!this is going to be a battle tonight, they haven’t played since we beat them and it has to have left a bad taste over the last few days…
Bergie gets a goal…disallowed tonight-
but then has a dump-in hit a kink in the boards and slide into a vacated net2-1 in another ot/shootout 5 in a row!!!
-
This is going to be a great season. Still if the Islanders are around 8-10th place at the trade deadline, it is important to trade sutton, weight, and park for draft picks and prospects. We need to continue the rebuild and not settle for an 8th seed playoff run.
-
Before this becomes Hardball with that other Chris we should try to keep the conversation to hockey.
I might write a check to the Free Charles Manson Foundation before I write one to Newsday. So, is there any update on the status of Trent Hunter? Is there any chance of seeing him if this winning streak continues?
How are Comeau($500K), Meyer($600K) and Schremp($715K), the highest paid ocupants of the press box, handling their sabatical? Have they at least been working on a couple of Marx Brothers routines for Islander TV?
Just to add to your point about the faceoffs… the center is probably 40% of FO success or failure. The work ethic of the other players on the ice can not be taken for granted when it comes to puck possession. When you lose a PP FO you’ve just killed 15 seconds of the PP, and the reverse is true as well. So MAJOR KUDOS to Richard Park who has been awesome on PK faceoffs… with a man disadvantage to gain puck possession. -
Charles Wang – Get thee to Willets Point
-
I no longer have Newsday in my favorites list, Katie Strang’s site is too expensive. Point Blank is my official site for Long Islander news. Chris, can you keep us on the West Coast updated on the Isles, Jets, Mets, plus any big news stories from the Island?
Thanks
-
This game will tell us a lot about this team. Buffalo is gana come out strong because we beat them 5-0 and that was the last game they played. Hopefully we play a good game and even if we lose if the game is well played it will tell us if this team is for real or not.
LETS GO ISLANDERS
-
While I expected Murray to win – the value of entrenched incumbency coupled with a dispassionate population that can’t get riled up for anything other than a presidential election – I’m disgusted with the effortless crap the Hempstead Dems pulled in this election. I understand that McElroy was pregnant for a while, but then, why in the hell do you run her in the first place? From a crap website without even an update today (and one that still lists her as mcelroyfornysenate.com), to the poster that emailed his willingness to volunteer and be responded to with silence, it was a complete joke. There are some Democrats in Hempstead, plus you’d think Suozzi would send some of his people their way. Just a terrible performance. Absolutely disgusting.
-
this is big
-
Well, it looks like the voters in the Town of Hempstead made their preference clear on the Lighthouse issue.
Will Wang, with this election result in mind, take a new look at his real estate proposal and scale it down enough to pacify the people who have to live near it?
-
Saw most of those election results coming. When i can’t go to the post office without having to pass a bunch of stuffy republicans manning a makeshift Obama-Hitler stand – you knew they were going to come out strong on election day.
What I really want to know is – who is responsible for going out and cleaning up all those Mangano signs.
Wish I was in Buffalo right now, could use a postgame trip to lundy lane.
Go Marty! We need as many wins from you as we can get before we trade you.
-
it’s a little odd, but it feels like every game this season is a test of when the Isles will fall back to earth and fail to bring the effort needed to compete. They’ve been quite good lately, but each game over this winning streak I’ve wondered if this is the game they get blown out. I don’t know which Buffalo team we’ll see tonight. Will we see the one that outskated the Isles in their first meeting or the one that was terrible in the last game. If the Isles can keep this up and get a few games above 500 then we may have to shift our focus to possibly making the playoffs – however, this is something I feel is still quite a long shot and not likely this season. I keep waiting for a lengthy losing streak to take them out of the playoff picture, but am pleasantly surprised by what I’ve seen so far.
Really would love to see them extend this streak, but the most important thing to me is how they’ll respond to their next loss.
-
Do anyone know what channel is MSG+ 2 on Fios is?
PS:Cablevison is raising the prices another 3% in december
-
Tonight is definitely a big game. I agree with others that we may not win tonight, but I’d like to see a competitive game. Buffalo is definitely going to be out for revenge!
On the LH Issue. I saw screw LI. Wang should definitely start looking into Queens. I have no doubt that we would draw more people on a nightly basis if we were closer to that little population center called New York City!
-
the drive for five
-
the problem for CW with moving the team is that he wants the deal to develop the land. He spent millions on the project so far to get the studies done in order to have the project approved. If he went to do it anywhere else, he’d have to start over from scratch. He has too much invested to walk away, and is losing too much money to settle for less. Just my opinion on the whole mess. I really hope they approve the lighthouse project and we can see everything move forward from here, but in his position, I’d have no idea what to do next
-
Chris R #17! There comes a time when winning is more important than spinning the wheel for draft picks. That time has been reached. There has been a losing culture imbedded in this franchise long enough and it wouldn’t behoove the likes of John Tavares and Kyle Okposo to get buried in it and permiate into their persona. Development of our youngsters into legitimate NHL hockey players who refuse to lose is the goal. Losing is a tough habit to break. Playing alongside solid vets such as Doug Weight is instrumental toward their growth. Perhaps Charles will soon take the handcuffs off of Garth and allow him to escape the Cap Floor. There will be plenty of youngsters who have already proven themselves at this level who will be Cap clutterers for other Organizations available(Too late for Phil Kessel). Once Wang gets certainty where the heck he stands with his franchise(hopefully here or in the Metro area)perhaps he can begin to operate his on ice product efficiently once again. Regarding Cap space, the Isles are the envy of the League.
-
CB,
I agree with you Wang should just move to Queens or Brooklyn…It would sting more if the Islanders moved within the metropolitan NY area than leaving the area. I also read a while back that in Queens they’re thinking of putting a roof on one of the tennis stadiums, and that they would take some seats out and put the hockey rink in the tennis stadium so they would have the stadium open all year round except as it is now just in September.
-
I wouldn’t read anything negative or positive about the Lighthouse Project into the Murray and Suozzi election results. As a New Jersey voter who is very happy today, I believe this election cycle had very little to do with local issues.
-
#24,I disagree! There was more to that election than the Project. The Kristen McElroy campaign virtually was invisible and most voters didn’t even know she existed before Sept 1st. If the Project itself was on the Ballot, which it should have been,I have little doubt it would have passed by a landslide.
-
Fios is a superior product, their SD of Isles games are clearer than CV’s SD games. A solution would be if the Islanders could go to another non-cablevision station like YES or SNY or even start their own channel (maybe Fios could create a Long Island Sports Channel with Isles & local College & HS sports & claim, “Not on Dolan Company Television”)
Cablevision is starting to run scared of Verizon, now they started offering free gifts to get customers. Their problem is their commercials do not tell the correct truth, i.e. they claim their internet is faster than ‘phone company’ internet; yeah, they’re right, it is faster than dial-up! And they claim they have a fiber network & EVERYONE knows that is a lie. The last mile or so of your cablevision signal is a shared copper wire with about 500 or so subscribers on it, & that is no lie.
It is time for CV to clean up its’ act or they will be history on LI.
Thanks for the rank, retired Verizon guy here. -
Nothing about that other Islanders coverage has gained any interest from me. Let alone spend a cent on it. Is this a joke? I didn’t know it costs until now.
Andy Sutton! That’s great, I love that more guys are coming along, who’s next?
-
“…beginning at 7:00 as Jeff Tambellini and the Islanders play in Buffalo.” Boy, for a long while it seemed very unlikely that a lead sentence on a PB post would start with those words. I was at the Oilers game on Mon. and I was very impressed with Tamb’s effort. IMO the keys for his recent success have been his willingness to 1) take the body which helps a player get into the game, 2) show consistent effort during every shift and 3) the confidence to go to the net every shift when we’ve got control of the puck. It’s clear he’s got good instincts. Just glad he’s finally following them. I’m not ready to crown him King of all things hockey, but it sure beats what we’ve gotten used to. Let’s hope it continues.
-
I hate to bring this up but I have a question regarding Cablevision and the MSG chanels. MSG and MSG Plus come in both HD and SD. The HD is awesome and the SD is standard looking. No problems so far. The issue arises with MSG Plus 2. Ok I get that for some reason they can’t broadcast it in HD. That’s fine, I can deal with SD. My question is why MSG Plus 2 in SD looks like it is from the 70s. The SD picture of MSG Plus 2 is terrible. Millions and millions times worse than MSG and MSG Plus in SD.
-
Ric S- Do you watch MSG Plus 2 on channel 414? This is the digital station.
-
Wang-Screw Murray.
Make the move to Queens. You’ll have a packed house every home game.
-
“This one falls on me. I’m the goal-scorer here, and I could have put the Islanders away in the first period myself, and I didn’t.”
- Thomas Vanek
And if the Queen had ##### she’d be the KING?
I can see a bullseye tonight… I hope Sutton has on the same glasses as me. -
While I dont understand why they did what they had to with the radio broadcast(hahahaha j/k I know it is all about money) I got to say I actually really like listening to Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe on the radio
-
Brian G #27 Msg Plus 2 is 81 on Fios I believe
-
I do not have a digital HD television and MSG+2 looks grey and poor for me as well. Plus the scoreband on ALL of these stations is so catered to people with big nice televisions that I cant even read them anymore.
As far as the election goes, I am not the slightest bit surprised but am nontheless disgusted with the pathetic turnout from the people of Long Island. As a group, we really do get exactly what we deserve.
News12- not even one mention of the LH in all their election coverage last night. Its like it isnt even important! Thats what happens when BOTH parties run as “PRO-LH”
-
At least most of you won’t be forced to watch the Sabres’ broadcast with the most annoying homer in sports, Rick Jeanneret. C’mon, EVERY Buffalo goal is not an earth shattering event. Meanwhile, even if you keep the volume the same, you might need the instant replay to verify the visiting team has scored based on Jeanneret’s enthusiasm for that occurrance.
-
Any draft picks the Isles aquire for Weight or Sutton or Biron (4th,4th,3rd rounder) are not worth moving the players. The statistical odds that those picks return a “avg” NHL player, such as a Chris Campoli for example, are probably 20% if another team was drafting. With Snow drafting I’d make the odds closer to %10. So even if you get lucky you wind up with a “avg” NHL player. Big Deal. That aint helping the drive for 5 cups. Look at how great dumping Guerin has helped. He’d be a pretty good player instead of Sim on this team right now.
-
Let’s go Isles! I went to the last game in Buffalo and they lost. I am going again tonight. They better make it up to me!
-
Biron will have to be at his best-that’s the key to tonight’s game
-
#41, lol, but we ARE occasionally forced into NYR (or NJD) announcer coverage, which is barely tolerable — go ahead hockey guy and ask about sam rosen’s calling a PP goal for the rangers – i believe we have our own response chant which is not too PC
-
Charles go to Willets Point. If you really want to make money from the Islanders, you can sell the Islanders and the Willets Point project after it’s completed. That will recoup your losses. A completed project in Willets Point will fetch more than anything any development surrounding NVMC.
-
Sad to say, I think the Lighthouse is dead now. Murray will never approve it as it is. Unless Charles backs way down on the scope, it’s not going to be built. Queens would be OK by me.
I think we may see a bad game tonight. We are due for one. If we can win tonight, we make a very strong statement that we are for real. A well earned point would work well too.
-
I kind of enjoy Janneret’s homerism, haha.
My wife’s a Sabres fan, so we catch a lot of the games. I’m probably in the minority, and maybe it’s not considered “professional” in the NY market, but I’d rather have an announcer that sounds enthusiastic when the team he’s announcing for scores. Howie seems to sound more excited when the other team puts one in the net and that annoys me more than anything, even if it is just all in my head
-
Why do you guys want them to just give up and move.
They are close to finishing this thing up.
It has been quiet for a reason… they are negotiating behind closed doors.
If Wang wasn’t happy right now, he would have been all over the media.
Isn’t it nice on here, without all of the team bashing…lol.
No fire Garth, Gordon, trainers, Sparky, etc….
Until tonight’s games that is…lol.
-
Rick Janneret is great.
He is probably the best in the business.
-
CB, your prospect post is long overdue! Can’t wait to read it! BTW, I’ve become an NHL Fanhouse regular – great article on Hall of Fame candidates!
-
….fire sparky!!!!!!
-
“I’ll just say this for the 100th time: get thee to Queens, Charles. If you don’t have a Lighthouse deal for a shovel in the ground in the 2010 offseason, and do not make any progress with a Queens, Brooklyn or Suffolk (in that order), it will be impossible for any fan to focus on Islanders Hockey.”
TRUER WORDS WERE NEVER SPOKEN! NYI would finally become relevant in QUEENS. I believe the RFQ for Willets Point has to be sent in by December 7 so I hope Wang is working on it. QUEENS is best for the franchise but unforunately Nassau is best for Wang’s real estate deal except he doesn’t realize he’ll never get all he wants in Nassau. The sooner he reaizes this, the better for NYI it will be.
Yankees buy a championship, Bloomberg buys an election while NYI can’t even buy decent radio coverage or buy above the cap floor. It’s insane that a big market team is run like a poor AHL one. This is NY – get it right and leave the suburbs with no mass transit or media coverage and GO TO QUEENS!!! (We’ll love Wang if he does but if he doesn’t pursue it and NYI leave NY he better look out)
-
Went to the school to vote for Kristin McElroy last night. So sad how empty the place was….What makes it worse is that Kate Murray wins an election roughly 82,000 to 44,000 (132,000 total votes) in a town that has nearly 800,000 people!! If you figure that a significant portion of those people are eligible to vote you can see that McElroy could have won if there was a big turnout. That’s how Jesse Ventura became Governor of Minnesota. Tons of people that never vote decided to come out and vote for him. Maybe if McElroy had been more visible during the past year she could have done the same thing……
-
On the local elections, apparently Nassau doesn’t care about NYI. No one cared enough about the LH project to vote for it’s supporter. No one on LI thought enough about Islanders to make a stand. That should tell many, including Wang, all they needs to know.
GO TO QUEENS or Brooklyn!!!
-
46-
I totally disagree, while the chances of getting a great talent after the 1st round is greatly diminished it is still better than nothing. I mean if the islanders were competing for a championship then by all means keep the vets but when the team is in rebuild mode go for the picks. That being said Weight is the one guy I would hesitate to trade, he has obviously helped the team get on track. -
I agree with #60 — If the Isles are playing well and competing for a playoff spot, there’s no way I trade Weight. Even if they aren’t competing for a playoff spot, I’m not sure I trade Weight.
He’s clearly a very solid leader for this team, and I’d love to see him on the team again next year.
-
The islanders should talk to the mets and sny… They have nothing going on during the winter besides jets post game coverage. HD and a stable channel
-
The Islanders are not abandoning their cable deal with MSG…the contract is for 20 or 30 years
-
Now, I will say this. We all have seen the verizon commercial, the one where they are listening to customers and the cable guys says “why we listening to customers”…”just sounds dumb”…does anyone else think of cablevision when they see that.
As far as the Islanders not being in HD. It is horrible. Especially for Long Island Fans. I understand Cablevision services both NY and NJ and all three teams are on both channels and we have the Knicks and all that stuff to deal with. But if cablevision ever listened to their fans, even if it was an extra $5 or $10 a month, they would give each household the opportunity to choose. Almost like on demand or something. Or cablevision would smarten up and think that at least Long Island should have Islander games in HD and New Jersey should have Devils in HD.
Out only hope is either queens or brooklyn. I say this because…we go to queens, same complex as the Mets, how awesome for SNY to have Islander games. Brooklyn, sharing an Arena with the Nets. We move to YES. Only hopes the Islanders have for consistant HD coverage. MSG is owned by the Rangers and as a result will continue to get the shaft. Dolan probably personally sees to this.
Just food for thought.
BTW, I got my new dog on Oct 28th. Anybody like to guess Islanders record since said date….
A victory tonight by the islanders and I might actually start drinking the Playoff Team kool aid.
-
Brian G…the worst part is that the Islander MSG deal was not a MSG deal, it was an FSN deal. Which worked great till MSG bought FSN. That is the problem.
-
Hockey Guy In Canada, 45, I just spent 3 years outside of Buffalo and Rick doesn’t just make every Sabres goal sound like an Earth shattering event, he makes every SHOOOOOOOOT sound like the universe is ending.
-
#46 – If the Isles trade Biron, they will get minimum a #2 and a young player. They will not settle for a #4.
-
So let’s check this out……. Cablevision had it’s most profitable quarter ever, is raising rates again, and can add another HD channel for the locals but does not. What do you expect though? Even News 12 is not available in HD….lol.
-
They look like the same old team tonight, but again, they played a team that has owners who are looking to compete.
Until the Islanders get rid of the real-estate king of LI, Charles Wang, the team will continue to have the lowest payroll in the league.
But they’ll still have to play against teams that all are willing to spend what it takes to win.
-
Reginald! You make it sound as though Charles never invested money into the Franchise. It was only until this year that he put his foot down and created a self imposed moratorium on spending. Until he is able to place his Isles into a profit making situation he will no longer put good money to bad. The SMG lease and Coliseum operation alone has rendered him obscene losses. The Project will make it economically feasible for him to continue as Isles owner on LI. Do you begrudge him if he wants a return on his investment? Who the hell else would be willing to throw millions away and show the kind of patience he has while waiting for something to happen adjacent to the Coliseum? No doubt some of his decisions(Hanging onto Milbury! Allowing him to acquire and overpay for Yashin! Giving DePietro that ridiculous deal!)were foolhardy, but without him the NY Isles might been gone long ago. He is the last owner of the NY Islanders,if the Project doesn’t come to fruition here. Mark my words! No one in their right mind will purchase this Franchise under the current circumstances. Hopefully he will be able to take his and Franchise and Lighthouse Project to Willets Point,if TOH doesn’t give him the zoning he needs.

Does anyone know why the picture on a non HD channel looks so horrible on an HDTV? I wouldn’t complain about the Isles getting booted from FSNY by a NJ team if the channel was atleast clear. I don’t understand how regular channels are blurry. Let’s Go Islanders
