KYLE OKPOSO DIAGNOSED WITH H1N1 FLU
RW stays on LI; Weight now out 4-6 weeks

by Chris Botta on November 10th, 2009 at 5:46 pm

4:45 pm - According to team officials, Kyle Okposo has been diagnosed with the H1N1 flu. He did not travel with the team to Washington. Expect Okposo to miss at least the three games this week on the first part of the team’s road trip. The NYI also announced that captain Doug Weight’s “upper-body” injury suffered last Friday in New Jersey will now sideline him for 4-6 weeks.

Great, just what we needed. Get better Kyle, your health is the most important thing.

  2. avatar kevin says:

christ! those two injuries are going to hurt this team

  3. avatar mtrico says:

Weight out 4-6? I guess these things come in bunches. Get better Dougie.

  4. avatar Frank nyc says:

    wow what a blow.
We needed KO on this road trip
and Dougie out 4-6 weeks is tough

  5. avatar derek says:

    So I guess Sim’s playing.

  6. avatar Mick Vukota says:

    Unbelievable …..

  7. avatar felix says:

i guess schremp may get a chance at some point.

  8. avatar Mike Rubino says:

Has Weight been healthy at any time in the last 8 months?

  9. avatar Chris Mc says:

Schremps still not going to sniff the lineup bc Comeau and Tambellini will stay in the lineup now and Hunter will replace Okposo for at least the next 3 games.

This is a chance now for Tamby and Blake to continue and hopefully build on the good play they’ve shown since they’re ‘grounding’.

  10. avatar Swan says:

I agree with Chris #9, I think Schremp is still the odd man out with Hunter returning. Comeau and Tamby deserve to play the first week of the road trip and hopefully they help pick up the slack. No KO is a big hole to fill.

  11. avatar mapisles2025 says:

time for schremp to show what he’s got.

  12. avatar orngfan says:

the nhl has a serious swine flu problem on their hands. i think they really need to make some changes or pay more attention to detail. scary trend.

  13. avatar cusi says:

No Rubino he has not been.

  14. avatar matt says:

schremp should def get a chance here

  15. avatar Jerry says:

Doug Weight is a great guy. But given that he has missed major portions of the past three seasons due to injuries – and last I looked he isn’t getting any younger – why in the world did they make him the captain? Streit was the obvious choice.

  16. avatar Matt says:

get better Kyle. really just take all the time off that you need.

i love doug weight but this is a reason why I think Mark Streit should have been given the C.

  17. avatar Willis says:

    That STINKS.

  18. avatar Staten Islander says:

And we’re OFF. Get well soon KO, lots of bed rest and chicken soup

  19. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Ouch. Wonderful news on your birthday CB. It is a shame to hear about both and hopefully the swine doesn’t go any further than KO. New lines for tomorrow?

    Moulson JT Park
    Bergy Nielsen Schremp/Hunter
    Tambs Bailey Sim
    Comeau Jackman Thompson

  20. avatar hockeytime says:

Figures, someone returns and another player out. I want Schremp to get a chance here. Sim has been doing his job but Bailey and Tambs play better with a playmaking winger on that line. This road trip just got harder.

  21. avatar Eastonhockey says:

I was really hoping this would be the year okiposo scores 20 goals so I could feal more confident about him n baily leading the isles to the cup in three years

  22. avatar Chris A says:

Of course the swine flu bug and the injury bug strike the us again

  23. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

Weight is great when he plays but I guess his age has caught up with him. Suck for kyle. Will be hard to win without him. Good test.

I’ve noticed the bailey boo birds are gone. That’s b/c bailey is comin alive. Patiences guys. 1st round picks just become nhl elite over night.

Bailey might become most complete center man on team.

  24. avatar thepolishprince says:

Great. That nice little winning streak’s gonna be a distant memory by the time this road trip ends.

  25. avatar beatlebailey says:

what kind of deal did arbour make with the devil to win those cups..SHEESH!..we are snakebit

  26. avatar K-Rob says:

    And it starts………

  27. avatar Avolp55turgeonfichaud says:

wowza….. that should make things interesting.

  28. avatar rob76 says:

CB – so who’s going to get scratched when Kyle is ready to come back? lol – on a serious note – just when things start looking up we lose possibly 2 of our most important players – Its terrible timing to happen as we start a long roat trip

  29. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I am wondering if Doug Weight is going to be able to put together any significant stretch of games this season? Same for Hunter.

If the Islanders would like to improve the trade value of Biron or anyone else is to get two better d-men, Biron would turn into a much higher pick if that happened.

I have been expecting to click on this page and see the Isles claimed Mair on waivers but nothing. I guess they don’t want to have to part with Sim. lol

  30. avatar potvins cups says:

Like a couple of other posters have already said…this is the reason why I was completely against Weight for captain. 1 year deal + injury prone = bad choice.

  31. avatar Jerky says:

I believe the players voted Weight captain, so there’s no one to criticize for the selection but the players themselves.

  32. avatar Mike L says:

What’s up with NHL players and the H1N1 flu?

  33. avatar Blizzard says:

….yeah it doesn’t seem to be affecting football or basketball. Its the traveling. NHL players travel a whole lot.

  34. avatar kevin fitz says:

Gotta stay away from that bacon Okposo!

  35. avatar Ice Girl Dad says:

Let’s hope everybody steps up and our goaltending can steal a game or two!

  36. avatar Staten Islander says:

Its not just us with the injuries, the Pens lost Malkin, Caps lost AO, look at who Detroit lost

  37. avatar mrlbem says:

    Blizzard,

They share water bottles in hockey. In basketball and football, they use disposable paper cups. Same in youth hockey. Time to rethink that custom and practice, perhaps.

  38. avatar Islebethere4u says:

Wow that hurts. Get well soon KO and DW. Maybe Shremp gets a sniff at the lineup now?

  39. avatar For The Record says:

32 — You can blame Garth and Gordon for having a players’ vote.

  40. avatar Glen S says:

I think the practice of player’s using the water bottle’s at least at NHL has ended awhile ago for the most part. Each player drink something different, they have their own water bottle that get’s refilled by the training staff. This whole H1N1, is very scary where were not into the flu season as we know it look at all the case’s. KO is the second isles player to get it. Like one of the other poster’s said they are together a lot and travel a lot.Blizzard you say that they use paper cup’s in the NBA and NFL yes that is true but don’t forget the NBA season just got underway 8 or 10 day’s ago so while agree the paper cup used in the NBA by the player’s will help but they travel as much as the NHL. And on a side note I coached Ice hockey at many youth level’s from Mite’s to Midget’s for about 15 year’s. My daughter still play’s on a girl’s 19U team and as far as cup’s being used, I never used them or never have I seen them being used. My daughter’s team just went individual water bottle’s so that should help. This whole H1N1 is SCARY…

  41. avatar Ray says:

    Hello 5 game losing streak….

  42. avatar dave chyzowski says:

besides for okposo, this team gets injured like crazy.. maybe they need to change their conditioning coach

  43. avatar mmm22 says:

Not good, we will likely see more guys come down with H1N1 now…

  44. avatar JimmyMac77 says:

Need to jump the line, and get their H1N1 shot. Flames and Leafs did it.

  45. avatar Lets go Isles! says:

They just mentioned you on 1050 espn radio. Unfortunately the news about the Isles was bad thou.. Damn injuries.

  46. avatar Dorfer81 says:

Too bad Long Island doesn’t take care of it’s hockey team the way Calgary takes care of theirs…

  47. LI actually cares about giving the vaccine to those Americans who are at higher risk than just higher paid. He’ll be okay in a week or so.

  48. avatar dan says:

Upset to see Kyle miss some games but maybe this is a blessing in disguise. He has been playing well but he has not been putting up points. This might be a needed rest for him. Don’t get me wrong, I hate to see him miss any games because he is my favorite and I think he is our best player hands down.
Also this gives an opportunity to someone else to prove they belong at this level.
Glade to see Hunter back, but what the heck happened to Weight? 4-6 weeks!

  49. avatar isles99 says:

i dont understand why some people would advocate giving the swine flu vaccine to the islanders before anyone else. if anything, athletes are more built to stand a flu more than the eldrely, the young, and the really sick who really need the H1N1 shot. get your priorities straightened out ppl. just because you make more money that the average american doesn’t mean that you should cut the line. read botta’s fanhouse article on the flames!

  50. avatar Steve says:

    Get well soon Kyle.

  51. avatar Justin says:

The Islanders always have a good deal of injuries and they always seem to come in bunches. Missing time isn’t going to help Kyle make the Olympic team. Damn. Ryan O’Marra (remember him?) made his NHL debut tonight.

  52. avatar Glen S says:

Didn’t the isles win there last game on Saturday 6-3, so where does the five game losing streak come from???

  53. avatar The New Isles GM says:

Hopefully Sim sits for Hunter and Schremp comes in for Okposo. Thank god Washington will probably be without the services of Ovechkin and Green tomorrow.

  54. avatar cgs878 says:

Oh no, now we have this darn H1N1 thing running around the NHL & sidelining the players. Ya never know who’s gonna get it next. I hope Mr. Okposo rests and recovers well enough to play in the second half of the roadtrip. I hope Mr. Weight rests up too.

  55. avatar teddyfusi says:

    #53 hes anticipating it..

  56. avatar Honnold says:

Feel better, KO. You will be the MVP lifting the Cup in 3 years.

  57. avatar Ethan K says:

Kyle Okposo hasn’t been carrying the team the last couple weeks if you haven’t noticed. He’s got the swine flu. He’ll get better soon and jump right back in. Can’t wait to get rid of the injury prone vets soon, like Weight, Martinek, etc. We need players that will be on the ice all the time.

  58. avatar UIF says:

Gut check time for everyone else. Hope things go well for KO with that H1N1.

  59. avatar OJK says:

4-6 Weeks ? How does it take so long to figure that out. Sounds like he has the exact same “upper body injury” that I’m recovering from,… i.e. broken collarbone. Why the Cloak and Daggar on the Injuries all the time. NFL Teams says what they are within hours, doesn’t see to prevent them from winning games.

  60. avatar TuxTax says:

International Airports and I also heard that after excessive exercise you are more prone to H1N1. Get Well Soon Kyle.

  61. avatar mikef says:

    will we see JJ??!?

  62. avatar bob l says:

wow, the team’s got the built-in 4-0 loss excuse all lined up tonight, lets see if they cash that ticket in or not

  63. avatar Jethro09 says:

Lets start up the injury/illness carousel…

  64. avatar Jethro09 says:

If Weight and KO are out of the lineup, there has to be a spot for Schremp. Perfect opportunity to get him in the lineup and let him show what he can do. Schremp didn’t have any training camp with the Isles and hasn’t gotten into too many games. If Gordon wants him to play center, let him center the fourth line and move either Thompson or Park up to another line. If they don’t let Schremp play, they’ll never know if he can be a contributor.

  65. avatar Nawrockstar says:

Get well Kyle… You will be missed
Now it’s time to give Schremp a chance and see if Comeau breaks to the net once again

  66. avatar Tom says:

    annnnnnnnnd here come the injuries

  67. avatar nassaubaby says:

feel better KO, i hope Schremp’s given a chance and finally happy belated CB!!

  68. avatar Chris TMC says:

Rob Carlin just said Blake Comeau left and is not feeling well… and with Okposo & Weight out to expect Schremp in.
Sigh- from practically healthy to stretched thin as thread in a matter of days.

  69. avatar UIF says:

Comeau too? Hmm…if that’s the case, this thing’ll probably hit even more of the players before it’s through. Maybe we get to see what Trevor Smith is made of by the end of this after all.

  70. avatar neologizer says:

Flu comes around every year. The currently circulating H1N1 is milder then most seasonal varieties. This media fueled hysteria is amazing seeing how the seasonal flu kills 40,000 a year and sends a million to the hospital every year anyway. What’s going on in the NHL is a reflection of what’s going on in population as a whole

That being as it is this bodes badly for the Isles. Wash your hands all you want but >50% of Flu transmission is through microdroplets (ie sneezing and inhalation).

If KO has it then Schremp is going to get plenty of opportunities to play in the next few weeks (if he stays healthy)
