11:10 am - We have a Rob Schremp sighting.

Amazing how this roster stuff works out with the Islanders. Observers debated for a week over what would and should happen when Trent Hunter returned. Now Kyle Okposo (H1N1 flu) and Doug Weight (U B I) are out.

Many fans also wanted to see Rob Schremp get a shot, against all odds. Well, now those odds could come in. Blake Comeau is ill. If he can’t go, Schremp has to play.

Moulson – Tavares - Park

Bergenheim – Nielsen – Hunter

Tambellini – Bailey – Sim

Schremp – Thompson – Jackman

Scott Gordon said he thought Schremp was most definitely a center and not a wing. From H1N1 and mysterious upper-body injuries comes opportunity.

The incredible, all-he-does-is-win Dwayne Roloson – record of 5-1, save percentage of .913 – starts tonight for the Islanders.

Alexander Ovechkin definitely out. Jeff Schultz unlikely to play. Mike Green a lineup probable.

Some notes on tonight’s opponents, courtesy of Capitals PR:

The Caps have scored a goal each of the last seven periods including five third-period goals Nov. 7 against Florida. With Alex Ovechkin out of the lineup the Caps have gotten goals from eight different players in the past seven periods – Tomas Fleischmann has three, Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison both have two each and Brooks Laich, Quintin Laing, Mathieu Perreault, Brian Pothier and Tyler Sloan each have one apiece.

Fleischmann has been on a torrid streak over the six games since he returned to the lineup after recovering from a blood clot in his leg that was discovered in the offseason. A 19-goal scorer last year, Fleischmann has five goals in those six games, a rate (0.83) that ranks third in the NHL behind Ilya Kovalchuk and Alex Ovechkin. Fleischmann has points in five straight games, his longest career point streak.

Six of the eight meetings against the Islanders since Bruce Boudreau became head coach of the Capitals have gone to overtime, with Washington holding a 5-0-3 record in that time.

Islanders Academy’s Intriguing Site: On Tuesday, I wrote about the Islanders’ most excellent Hockey Academy – a post that I hope generated as much interest in the program as it did for my all-time classic typo.

Well, I learned something else about the program today. Besides sessions at Iceworks in Syosset and The Rinx in Hauppauge, the Islanders Academy has a clinic this fall in…wait for it…

No, really…wait for it…it’s worth it…

The World Ice Arena in friggin’ Flushing, Queens!

Right by Citi Field. At Willets Point.

Oh my, that’s rich.

Point Blank Holiday Party: We’re looking into the possibility of hosting a holiday party for local readers of our little blog. Likely at RC Dugans in East Meadow. Likely on a weeknight in early December. Definitely centered around watching an Islanders’ road game on Dugans’ many large and medium-sized screens. Definitely some hockey talk and cheap beer. Possibly a special guest or two. Stay tuned for details.

Schremp? The Academy Is…other must-have info

  1. avatar doc says:

Amazing… An ice hockey rink in flushing near citi field? Who would have ever thought…

  2. avatar Alan says:

The Isles should play Schremp with Moulson and Tavares, and shift Parky back to the 4th line.

  3. avatar felix says:

i would like to see bergenheim with Tavares and Mouslson one of these days.

  4. avatar Alan says:

    Give Schremp some play please

  5. avatar 4theisles says:

There is always hope against a tough team like the big Caps playing at home and the short spelling is R O L L Y !

  6. avatar Frank nyc says:

With these player i would like to see Tamby on the first line with Tavares and Moulsen
Also i dont think Schremp should be on the fourth line. If you wanna give him a shot, then do it.

  7. avatar Glen S says:

That rink been open for about two year’s now and should’ve been open more then eight year’s. But Queens, Bloomburg or somebody can’t remember who It got delayed four to five year’s. Nice facility.
In response to CB post on the Islanders academy, it’s awesome. A great way to get today’s youth involved in a sport that most parent’s stay away from due to the cost. Nice story CB and way to go Islanders.
Let’s win one tonight boy’s for KO,Weight,Martinek,DP god this list is getting to long.Anyway
    LETS GO ISLANDERS

  8. avatar UIF says:

Schremp can thread some beautiful passes, and that seems to be his best quality up to now. Not sure if threading them to Jackman and Thompson is really worth it, but if he gets some PP time where he’ll have more time to make that pass, maybe he can make something happen.

  9. avatar Bob Bassen says:

If Schremp plays and takes the body than the Bruins don’t score the tying goal against the Islanders earlier this season.
    Still burned in my memory…sorry.
Still pulling for him though and recognize his skill…just saying.
    Go Isles!

  10. avatar AZS says:

I know that with Park on their line there was production, but I would love to see someone with more offensive ability on the top line. I think Tamby would be nice up there at this point …I agree about Schremp …I’m not saying he’ll turn out to be great, but why not give a real shot with guys who can play instead of putting him out there on the 4th line. I’m not saying he should bump people out of the lineup, but since he’s in today why not put him in a spot to succeed?

  11. avatar beatlebailey says:

robert nilsson as Schremp’s his amazing race partner? Didn’t he mean ZACH PARISE!?!?!…

  12. avatar nightfly says:

LOL beatle… Parise went to Travis Zajak with the very next pick. They currently have a two-continent lead on Schremp/Nillson.

  13. avatar derek says:

AH, the World’s Fair Ice Skating Rink, former home to my childhood travel team the New York Stars. Boy I miss those days. Is that the same place?

Several streaks break tonight. Most notably Bruce gets his first regulation loss against the Isles. Second, Fleischmann’s 5 game point scoring streak comes to an end. And finally Tavares breaks the single goal scoring streak with a remarkable 2 goals and 2 assist night. Wait, is that asking too much?

  14. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

I hope Schremp isn’t on the fourth line while Sim is on a scoring line. That would make no sense whatsoever.

  15. avatar Zeike says:

#13 – Yes, that is too much to ask. I would have settled for the first one and left it at that.

And for those of you saying that Schremp should be on one of the other lines if GOrdon’s going to give him his shot remember that this isn’t his shot. He’s only playing b/c there is no other healthy body around. Gordon already said that he was only suited to play center.

  16. avatar bergie20 says:

the isles camp in queens news is interesting. hopefully wang is seriously exploring moving the isles to flushing.

  17. avatar Glen S says:

    # 13
No it’s not the same old square rink that on the west side of Flushing meadow park, that building is now all the queens museum. The new rink is located in the N/E corner of the park raight behind the home Depot.

  18. avatar Tom says:

That clinic in Willets point can’t be just a coincidence, can it? Of course not! The Isles marketing west of the CIP? That’s a first. December 7th is a BIG date.

  19. avatar derek says:

Thanks Glen S. I knew there was a new rink, I just wasn’t sure where.

  20. avatar Sean says:

Nice I like Schremp more now that hes a Dave Matthews fan, tired of all NHLers saying they love Nickelback

  21. avatar Jimmy B says:

    Tom #18–What’s December 7th?

  22. avatar Mike from Philly says:

The Islanders new practice rink (once they move to Queens) is nicer then the current rink they actually play hockey in. I will be at the game tonight (the perk of having a sales territory in D.C) Lets Go islanders!

  23. avatar Since72 says:

4th line may be perfect for Schremp’s “shot”. There is no point in having him show Go-Go the things that Go-Go already knows he can do. On the 4th line he can show him that his game has become more complete. That is how he can crack the line-up and then work his way up.

  24. avatar dan says:

    LETS GO ISLANDERS

  25. avatar Matt says:

i agree with Alen. Shremp fits with the Tavares Moulson line. def worth a try for a period or 2.

  26. avatar James says:

I am still very optimistic about this team. Why?

This season with the steps forward by many players, we actually have the depth to deal with some injuries. No curse here; look at about every team in the league who has already 3 or 4 players injured; it is not just us.

Anyway hope we can win one tonight

  27. avatar Rich says:

I’m in for a holiday party with the nation.

  28. avatar TM says:

That rink in QUEENS looks nicer than NVMC.

I usually slam NYI for terrible marketing but have to say this Academy program in the fall in QUEENS is a great idea.

If only people in QUEENS and west could hear games on the radio by a radio team or read stories by a dedicated reporter in paper then NYI marketing might actually get a clue.

Or be able to hear games on the radio in NVMC’s parking lot and on Hempstead Turnpike for that matter.

  29. avatar Oren says:

I quit Newesday cold turkey and I haven’t missed a thing I’ll tell you that. Strang is a bit ameatuerish and bush anyway. CB- is there any way you can put the Fanhouse stuff directly on this site so we don’t have to be re-directed? And can we comment on it here? Thanks.

  30. avatar JJ says:

#27 – I agree… I’m extremely surprised that Newsday would put a young journalist on the Islanders. To be sure, Strang does a decent job, but she doesn’t seem to have the history or depth I expect in Islanders reporters.

  31. avatar JJ says:

As far as injuries go, Hunter comes back tonight and Okposo is not injured – he’s sick with swine flu, like many other players across.

For the most part, we’re fairly healthy minus Weight. As for Martinek, he’s always hurt, so no big surprise there!

  32. avatar KO21 says:

Im gonna miss my favorite player, our best player, KO…

  33. avatar BR says:

Oren – If CB did that then there would be no point to him being on Fanhouse in the first place, and no point to Fanhouse sponsoring Pointblank. It may not be as convenient as logging directly into PB, but we must all continue to show our support by visiting Fanhouse whenever possible.

  34. avatar Nyisles says:

we defintly needs a radio station. can’t hear anything anywear

  35. avatar Steve says:

It’s very encouraging to hear that the Islanders Academy has a clinic in Flushing, Queens. Hopefully the Lighthouse staff are working on the bid for the Willets Point project.
