OKPOSO REJOINS ISLANDERS IN CAROLINA
Could take part in morning skate in Raleigh
Kyle Okposo is in Carolina and hopes to skate with the team this morning. I’d never be smart enough to figure all this out. On Monday, Kyle practiced with the Islanders. On Tuesday, he was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. On Thursday he was on a plane to Raleigh and today he’ll be with the team. Is there a doctor on the blog?

im no doctor, but i had swine flu last week. really started feeling sick tuesday, doctor visit on wednesday morning, started takin meds at noon wednesday and was able to play in my hockey game on sunday night. 5 days worth of rest after being the sickest ive ever been in my life and was able to get back on the rink 4 and a half days after starting meds….so its possible
I’m tellin’ ya… the Islanders medical staff gets no respect!
Dr. Vinny Boom Botz
I had swine last weekend and even with lots of meds and rest and SOOOOOO MUCH liquid, it knocked me out for like 5 days.
I’ve stopped trying to figure out how this team — or NHL teams in general — handle injuries/illness
Perhaps he’s feeling a bit better, and will be ready for Saturday night’s game?
Friday the 13th, 6-6-6 record, miracle H1N1 recovery, things are gettin’ strange around here.
Perhaps KO has magical healing powers? Would love to see him play but I would hope we could beat the ‘Canes without him.
Question?… What is that red thing that all coaches are wearing on their lapels?
Tue after lunch at work I started sweating and was freezing. I sucked it up for 4 hours ( I did not want to go home and loose my 4 hours OT) Got home had a 103 temp. Wednesday morning it was 100, I felt better went to work. After work 100.4, I felt decent and my hockey team is short on players so I went to my game. Not only did we only have 7 skaters I logged 46 minutes and scored on a breakaway. (I’m not to good, I avg a goal every other game. I am not even close to a pro players physical condition, it is defintly possible for KO to be ready to go..
Pretty similar to the other guys, I was only really bad for about a day moderately sick for about 3 days. Not sure if it was regular flu or H1N1 though. Glad to see KO is getting back so quick!
The swine is no different than any other flu. People take it differently. Mass propaganda and the fact that a few more young people than expected have died made people fear it.
4000 have died. 22 mill infected. propaganda is not the right word. that implies a concerted effort to mislead. warning people of a possibly more serious flu is smart
just a regular flu…not H1N1. Was probably under the weather at the practice he played D. He’s a monster.
kyle is such a beast, I think its more like the swine flu had a case of kyle okposo.
The only thing that made swin flu scary is that its affecting people this time of year. Real flu season starts in few months.
As far as statistics. Amount of deaths is no different than regular flu.
That said its good to be extra careful to clean hands often, taken multi vitamins and keep well hydrated.
Chris,
I am a varsity athlete (soccer) at my college in Connecticut, and I unfortunately had the swine flu this past season. I was diagnosed around 12:30PM on a Monday with the swine flu, and I was immediately quarantined and not allowed anywhere near the team. I began taking medications and I felt much better around Wednesday morning, however, my fever persisted, which is a usual for the swine flu. My fever did not go away until at least Friday morning, which meant that I was able to practice on Saturday morning. According to our medical and training staff, it takes at least 24 hours after the fever goes away for someone to not be contagious.
The Isles are taking a risk here, in my opinion. He should have just waited it out. I’m sure this won’t be the last case of swine we see with the Isles.
Dumb dumb dumb
For # 8. The red adornement on the coach’s lapel is a poppy. It’s the Canadian way of honoring the troops akin to the yellow ribbon here in the states. Many American’s don’t realize that in proportion to the country’s respective populations Canada has lost as many troops fighting side by side our boys in Afghanistan as the U.S. Being veterans day in the states this past week I guess some smart person asked NHL coach’s to do this as a thank you to Canada.
On the flu… For some people it presents itself as almost a bad cold. Depends on your particular immuno response and what strain you contract. If his symptoms have been gone for 24+ hours he’s most likely not contagious. If the Isles were at home in a locker room the size of a mop closet it’d probably be a good idea to keep him away. Other teams rooms are like well ventilated air plane hangars. Ours, a moldy Attica style solitary confinement hole. lol.
he may be ok now but doesnt it make sense to be alittle more careful as there are others on the team, i repeat, its a TEAM plus the flu can be caught easily–Weight had it too–Keep him out a few more games so TEAM isnt hurt later by others getting it–Great medical staff we have here–You dont think they would be careful with Jeter if this happenned to the yankees??
Not really surprised. I’m up in Cornell country and Swine is usually only really bad the first day or two. Then the fever goes does and it’s just a cold. That being said, they shouldn’t push it, and maybe the team should think about a better way to disinfect the exercise equipment and water bottles. Gotta get 2 points tonight.
The red poppy is to celebrate remembrance day, the end of WWI. Col John McCrae was a canadian fighting at Ypres. He wrote a poem about the red poppies. The last couple of lines in the poem are in the Canadiens dressing room.
I sure hope he plays.
remarkable recovery
We could sure use him for these back to back games…I think he could of been the difference in Washington.
I will be @ my first ever isles away game tonight….after having season tix all my life on LI. I hope to see KO after mt 2.5 hr drive….LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!
KO is a real life X-Man. I hope he can share his powers with the rest of the team.
KO IS A BEAST!
My whole family got it in June. If you take Tamiflu, you might feel fine in a few days. The problem is that you are still contagious to others. So, I just don’t think OK should be back so soon. Besides, it really affects your respiratory system. I can’t see him being effective even if he plays.
Ken #14 comment…
Best comment ever on here
if he was still contagious they probably wouldn’t let him near the team, so i’m sure he’s been checked out and cleared,
he may have fought through it for 2-3 days before caving, hence making it seem like a fast recovery (while also getting blake sick)
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918)
The poppies referred to in the poem grew in profusion in Flanders in the spoiled earth of the battlefields and cemeteries where war casualties were buried and thus became a symbol of Remembrance Day. The poem is part of Remembrance Day solemnities in Allied countries which contributed troops to World War I, particularly in countries of the British Empire that did so.
#14, Ken, nice. I think that was probably a Chuck Norris joke though.
Well, “skate with the team” does not mean that he’s starting tonight. To me, it means that he wants to stay in ice-ready shape and keep his legs going. I hope that he’s going to rest more than usual so that he gets back in the lineup for next week.
listen, these guys are athletes in the best shape of their life, so to the common folk it takes us longer to recover, these guys not only can recover quicker, they probably recover with a full medical staff in a spa somewhere. Big advantages, so KO is the man anyways, future captain for sure!!!!
Ken that made me laugh.. Good chance he’s not playing tonight maybe just rejoiningbthe team for the rest of the trip
Isn’t there some legality to flying with a disease? Don’t they have to deem him free and clear of the disease? How exactly does one shake the H1N1 in a 24-48 hour period? Something does not add up here.
KO is OK
Thanks #18,#21,#32
Look at KO, man - swine flu doesn’t have a chance against him!
They should not have KO near the team.
First, he is possibly still contagious.
Second, if he is weakened from being ill, he is at risk of injury.
It’s like the Isles are using the Mets medical staff
Well its not like he has something physically wrong with him that could get worse if he plays. He could get hurt because he is sick and might get hit because he is not aware but its not like a bad hip will get worse. LETS GO ISLANDERS. get off of the Satan record with a win.
Thanks Raine for posting Flanders Fields. I heard the reference to the poppies and why they are worn around Veterans/Remembrance Day, but had never read a poem. I also heard that the last few verses are printed in the Habs locker room. Is this the entire poem?
On KO, I think he didn’t feel well over the past weekend, yet tried to fight through it vs. the Thrashers, rested Sunday and came for a practice on Monday still being sick, on Tuesday felt miserable, Wed. a little better. Thursday probably had no fever at all and was cleared to travel. Purely guessing here.
6-6-6, FRIDAY THE 13th!! Please do not Play Okposo tonight. I fear a big time injury. I just hope its ot Okposo or Tavares. It will probably end up being Neilsen, who I like, however he is not part of the rebuilding “core” that some people have. He just gets hurt way too often and at best hes a 2nd line player.
Basically we are all out of shape slobs who would take a week to recover - A beast like KO, 4 days sounds right.
Anyone else here have the thought that if KO played “D” in a game, he’d be the best Dman on the team? just sayin’ ( sorry Streiter )
44… Isn’t a good second line center part of a rebuilding “core”? Legitimate top 6 forwards are hard to come by
If Okposo is healthy enough to play - these should be the lines the next 2 games…just roll 4 lines - Carolina & Florida are not that Physical of teams:
Moulson-Tavares-Park
Tambellini-Bailey-Okposo
Bergenheim-Nielsen-Hunter
Thompson-Schremp-Comeau
Scratches: Sim & Jackman (this team doesn’t need an enforcer every game)
If Nielsen is at best a 2nd line player(???) I’ll take it. It’s not like the Islanders have a lot of those these days.
Not everyone is a 1st liner. Even Stanley Cup winning teams have guys that play on the 4th line. (sarcasm)
DOC
I’m a doctor. PhD. That said, he should not be with the team. Too much risk, not enough reward.
maybe he never actually had the flu virus? maybe he was just sick and someone said it was swine flu? that is probably more likely.
Game in 7 hours & no game-day update… hmmm… CB must be busy with another insightful and fun FanHouse story!
Hopefully OKposo is no longer contagious! Like # 14 that is funny!
I feel bad for all of the others on KO’s flight from NYC to Carolina. Over 75% of the air you breathe on a commercial airplane is recycled air that other passengers have already breathed. I hope they distributed masks for that flight. I am concerned about the team flight to Florida after the Carolina game.
yeah but also u gotta think…kyle could have had the swine on sat or sunday after the trashers game..thats 5,6 days ago
I have no clue why Nielsen isnt a part of the rebuilding. I think he is a good not great player. i would for him to stay for the future of this team
1) H1N1 thus far is no more dangerous than any usual season flu out break. Its unlikely that Okposo had the very expensive blood test to confirm its actually Swine flu and not another upper respitory infection. Therefore its entirely possible he’s had a minor case and perhaps has recovered enough to consider rejoining the team.
2) As for possibly being a carrier to other players, the time line for someone being contagious is from just before symptoms become apparent to about 24 hours afterwards. After that point its unlikely he could infect his team mates.
LOL @ Post #9. I had it once too. I played all 60 minutes plus 3 of over time. I scored 5 goals with three helpers then on my way home I saved a family from a burning building. When I got home the NY Giants left an answering machine and asked me if I could play tailback for them for the Monday night game so I hopped a plane to New York and running on no sleep I ran for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns on 9 carries. During the plane ride home the pilot and co-pilot became sick and I when the flight crew asked if anybody could fly the plane I rose to the occasion. During the landing the pilots heart stopped. I performed open heart surgery with a ball point pen and messaged his heart back to life with my right hand all while landing the plan with my left. What a day.
Give Jake the A. LOL
Seriously though, if Okposo is cleared to play and he is up to it, he should play. The team is much better with him in the line-up than without.
On a side note, if the Isles continue to be competetive this year, Snow should use some Wang bucks to make a move to add some help (as long as it doesn’t require one of our ‘core’ players or high draft picks).
Ken #14, best line of the year!
The “swine” flu:
1)Currently H1N1 diagnosis is made by symptoms). H1N1 seem to give more GI problems then the current seasonal flu so that’s the differential basis of diagnosis. Almost nobody gets the diagnostic test (its expensive and knowing doesn’t change anything)
2) H1N1 is actually milder then the typical seasonal flu on both severity of illness and mortality rate.
3) The initial fears stem from the facts that A) it was discovered as a different strain then the circulating seasonal (H1N1 is actually a mix of swine, human and bird strains) B) The 1918 spanish flu was H1N1. C) It was discovered by the CDC in the southeast US and traced back to a new strain to be killing people in Mexico(a country with poor disease survalence) and intially its relative abundance, epidemology and mortality rates were unknown.
4) Many other viral infections will give you “mild” flu like symptoms. Its possible KO didn’t even have H1N1
5) Health experts fear it could mutate into a more lethal form (see 1918 spanish flu) and our population is rather naive immunologically to this strain
6) Pure media hype
Are we even sure he actually had swine flu? Wouldn’t be the first misdiagnosis.
Post 57 =funniest post I’ve read on this blog……..post 14 is great too
