Shhhh…MacDonald played today in Bridgeport

by admin on November 29th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

8:45 pm – Andy Sutton’s groin strain will keep him out 2-4 weeks. 7:45 pm - Bridgeport beat Hartford today, 3-2, in a shootout. Andrew MacDonald scored a goal for the Sound Tigers. The Islanders didn’t tell anyone that Andrew was sent to the AHL. Matt Martin had the clincher in the SO. Trevor Smith had a goal and an assist.

Hmm, I wonder if we are acquiring a Dman from somewhere

  2. avatar Big Boy says:

I wish we had some real studs down in BP…hopefully Martin can turn into a way better Jackman who can atleast win fights with authority and maybe JJ can turn into another Bergie

  3. avatar Neil says:

    Islanders De-Authorized?

  4. avatar streit02 says:

CB, not sure how much you get to watch the sound tigers, but i dont get to watch any games. It seems lately everytime you mention the team that Martin is doing something good. Is he starting to make stronger progress with his game since the beginning of the season?

  5. avatar Cleveland Isles Fan says:

Hell hath no fury like a blogger scorned.

  6. avatar battfist says:

CB- why did you suggest Martin wouldnt be ready for another 2 seasons?

    Im thinking next year….no?

  7. avatar rb says:

I’d give them a pass, CB. It’s a major holiday weekend.

  8. avatar beatlebailey says:

huge loss for us sutton was playing great…f*&^*^%!!!

  9. avatar RvaGuyinVA says:

Sorry RB, Thanksgiving was Thursday. It’s now Sunday night. They missed the boat.

    You snooze you lose,

  10. avatar ken says:

sutton should resign with us for a bargain price.. he has missed so many games during this 3 year contract. i think he owes us.

  11. avatar irish13 says:

    tom preissing?

  12. avatar JJT9090 says:

should make a move for Corvo

  13. avatar Kevin27nyi says:

Not terrible. I just hope it’s 2 weeks

  14. avatar Lorne says:

Every year Sutton too somehow can not stay healthy. I would be careful before giving him any extension. Good thing is we are off till Thursday.

  15. avatar mmm22 says:

    Chris Chelios? hahaha

  16. avatar mmm22 says:

Definitely no extension for Sutton, I like him, he isn’t a bad defenseman, but he cant stay healthy.

  17. avatar JustinChi says:

It is amazing how the same players always manage to get hurt…Sutton hasn’t played more than 60 games since 2005-06, Martinek is hurt every season and Nielsen also seems to miss big chunks of time each year though he is still young. This team had no depth on D before the season and that is still the biggest problem.

  18. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Well that’s too bad about Sutton. Wild card now becomes Witt. Can he step up and *fill a void*? Yeah , I know. Just ruminating. FMIII stepping it up a bit is not totally out of the possibility. Although not enough to match Sutton’s size. I would guess Neilson is out for while also if they need to *re evaluate*. I think Snow has made mostly good deals regarding trades/waivers etc. and have confidence with him but I personally have no interest in making a deal or deals just to rearrange the deck chairs.
You have to give to get and I am not sure just what the Islanders have that some other team wants that wouldnt just end up being a *sideways* move. What we do have is Cap space which in todays NHL is prolly worth the most and that is where Snow could swing something special. We shall see.
    Go Isles!

  19. avatar Eastonhockey says:

We have cap space but Wang won’t pay some guy who is bad millions of wangs money just to get a 2nd player who is worth his money. It’s that simple…wangs counting pennys look at radio. Lowest paid coach n gm n lowest paid players in NHL.

  20. avatar steve says:

a month ago, sutton was booked steerage on the next rail out of town. i think many had Rm carrying his bags, til his knee popped. patience guys. fire sales and cap hell awaits a few teams in the coming months. it may nit be fast enough for some of you, but patience has been rewarded, all season long.
having just written that, i’d rather see the team move faster for a d-man, as they get pricey come playoff time. bargins can be had, if you shop early, and wisely.
Cb. i find local print media to be full of awe, as in awful, when it comes to non MSG sports coverage.

  21. avatar jon from nj says:

typical…i know every team has their injuries, but he were go again.

  22. avatar Ben says:

Enough already with these injuries to the SAME players!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Sutton and Martinek but they are always hurt.

I would look to trade them plus another for someone solid , decent and reliable.

I don’t have anyone in mind but surely Snow has to be thinking this and not just us!

  23. avatar Chris TMC says:

IMO missing a couple of weeks is not justification for saying he is “always hurt.” Most hockey players miss some games every season. Im just thankful that this isnt something longer term. Feel better soon, Andy!

Now we have to find out whats going on with Fransie.

  24. avatar Chris R says:

I hope that Sutton gets better so we can trade him. I’ve had enough of his injury issues. Even if we could get him for a bargain price in July, Garth should take a chance on someone else. We need new blood on defense. Also regarding the draft, this is the year that Garth needs to draft another top dman.

  25. avatar Islesin2010 says:

CB- I look back at the early 2000′s team and the defense those team had. KJ, Adrian Aucoin, Roman Hamrlik, etc.

Who do you see in the league now that the Isles can make a fair trade with to get a player similar to the three I named, more the first two than Hammer?

  26. avatar justin says:

BP’s come from behind win was good stuff. I liked when down in the game Martin and Byers go a few rounds/ that rallied the troops. Then to add salt to the wound Martin with the S/O WINNER! BRING UP SOME YOUTH to the big club, anyone says this kid can’t contibute in toughness and on ice presence is not seeing the big picture. Ya gotta feed the crops for a good harvest in the future!

  27. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Losing Sutton hurts especially since the team has no depth on D, not to mention the fact that he has played really well for most of the season. Too bad the team never picked up Jones. We could have used him right about now. I hope that if Snow does make a move to help the team he doesn’t give up too much.

  28. avatar Eric Cup says:

2-4 weeks. With this team, it’s always the longer stretch. Bet on it. Hope I’m wrong.

  29. avatar The new isles gm says:

2 to 4 weeks isnt so bad guys…its just a groin pull its not like he needs surgery

  30. avatar Islesin VA says:

No trades, no FA signings. Lets continue the build as planned. Going for the playoffs should not be a consideration. We need to continue to amass talent at all levels, so that we can handle injuries, etc. Lets not give up the future. Why qualify for the playoffs to play Wash, NJ and be gone in 4 or 5 (if we are lucky) games. Stick with the plan and lets build for 2011 or 2012. We need a team that will endure and one day can compete for the ultimate prize – not a team like the Rangers.

  31. avatar IslesPassion21 says:

The thing that frustrates me is the fact that our team doesn’t go out banging bodies every single shift. Notice when they are playing physical, finishing checks, ala Trent Hunter, they seem to control the play, creating chances off of turnovers, caused by the hits. Gordo should start benchinh guys who don’t finish their checks.

  32. avatar Staten Islander says:

I really hope its ONLY 2-4 weeks, injuries like this have a habit of lingering. Any word on Neilson?

  33. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Well I would be willing to bet money that Andrew MacDonald will be up for the game on Thursday and that Comeau or Schremp will be the forward added with some line juggling. It isn’t the most bold prediction but I would hate for Snow to hit the panic button and make a drastic move for someone on D that would deter the original rebuilding plan. I am content to let this team play out the season and learn to win AND lose and grow from it. It will only make them better and come next summer can start looking at adding pieces to make this team competitive with hopes of them advancing deep into the playoffs in 2010-2011.

  34. avatar dose says:

” I look back at the early 2000’s team and the defense those team had. KJ, Adrian Aucoin, Roman Hamrlik, etc.”

it’s no coincidence that the best the team has been in 16 years is when they had that really solid backline. the game has changed, but not THAT much. this gets old, but for me the g.m.’s priority must be a stable of good d-men, both bangers and puckmovers. if he can get one of each this year, now and/or by deadline time, he will have done a damn good job and will move this team a big step forward. the extent to which DP progresses is obviously key. if he can be stable and solid, it will free up another valuable chip for snow to play, which is how he planned it.

  35. avatar goislesgo105 says:

Maybe we’ll see Trevor Smith or JJ called up for a few games. Hope they are developing! Looks like we’ll need them.

  36. avatar Joey303 says:

I dont understand everyone that says “stay the course we will be fine”. No trades, no FA signings. WTF?? Do you see whats in Bridgeport? If we had anyone of any significance, dont you think they would be here? Taveras fell in our laps, we wont know about Dehaan for 3+ years, and we drafted 2 goalies in the second round last year. Where are the 2nd 3rd rounders from the last 4 years? We NEED to make trades and signings. With free agency and salary caps, its not automatic that the Islanders will be very good in 2011, 2012. Atlanta is much better, and has better prospects, so does Philly, Tampa, Columbus, L.A – do you see where Im going with this? In order to get better, we MUST make trades for quality players, especially on D. We have quantity in the system, lets get some QUALITY!!!

  37. avatar Tom says:

I feel for Andy. He was having a good season, but the guy is always hurt.

  38. avatar Eastonhockey says:

I have a hard time believing snow is allowed to add payroll when he wasn’t allowed to sign tanguay…don’t try telling me snow thought Blake comeu was a better player n wanted to leave playing time for Blake. Blake is a 5th liner. Allways was.

  39. avatar Brian G says:

Niklas Wallin from Carolina looks like a good fit and would probably only cost a pick. They need another D man bad…if Neilsen is out for awhile, I guess they will use Schremp first, then at the end of next week Weight should be back.

  40. avatar mmm22 says:

    Joey,
I totally agree that the Sound Tigers are low on high quality prospects but if you think that we dont have talent in the system what is Snow going to use as trade bait? The Islanders could get a cup building prudently or they could do it by tanking and getting stars, Penguins-style. Despite the spin they put out there I think they will probably do the later, after all it seems to be the best way to make money judging by all the Penguins jerseys that I saw on Friday.

  41. avatar db says:

joey 303 dehaan is not 3 years away he will make the team next year almost made it this year.

  42. avatar Islesin VA says:

Check out the Caps and the Pens. They built their teams through the draft and THEN added FA’s. We need to do the same. I actually met George McPhee (Caps GM) and he told me that Garth is following the Caps plan, and that he is on the right track. The playoffs this year mean nothing. Building a quality team with depth for the long haul is the smart way to go in this era of salary cap.
