DiPIETRO’S TUESDAY START SCRAPPED
Goaltender to be re-evaluated today

by Chris Botta on December 14th, 2009 at 11:31 am

As reported by the indomitable Katie Strang, Rick DiPietro’s scheduled start for Tuesday is now off. His leg “tightness,” said to be be “unrelated” to all of his surgeries over the last three years, will be re-evaluated today.

Uh oh. Bettter to be on the cautious side than the aggressive side. We all know how the latter worked out…

  2. avatar Original Rob says:

    sigh

  3. avatar Islesfan99 says:

WOW… Better be very cautious…. Im getting nervous he will never play in NHL again.

  4. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

I guess, we hoped for best but optomism of DP return is on decline once again.

I hope he can return but if he cant it time for him to face reality. I hope he can retire. This would give us 4.5MM to spend on dman. And im sure WANG will give him another job within organization for life.

  5. avatar Islesfan in Vancouver says:

gotta feel for DP. Has to be dealing with a ton of frustration and hearing the constant jokes about his salary can’t help. I hope he manages to get back and return to form for his sake. Always one of my favorites.

  6. avatar John says:

It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock & roll.

  7. avatar Brian in VA says:

See… See… DP=Done! Let’s see concussions, hip, knees, probably torn quad or something… See ya DP!

  8. avatar mtrico says:

It has to be tough when you are a professional athlete and your body betrays you like that. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious, but it’s hard not too think the worst. Good thing the orginazational depth at goaltender is a lot better than it had been.

  9. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

So glad our season is not riding on his return.

  10. avatar Sean says:

Sigh… can’t help but wonder where the Isles would be right now if they’d just kept Luongo and drafted Heatley instead of DP

  11. avatar VanVoorhees says:

Give him a week and he’ll be with the big club. It’s gonna be tight, Witt was tight and he played. Go slow all you want with DiPietro, He’s gonna have pain for a while, the doctors just need to decide if it’s pain because his playing is further damaging a joint or it’s pain and he’ll just have to work through it.

  12. avatar Pat says:

    this isn’t even surprising anymore…

  13. avatar Blizzard says:

…..yep leg tightness….not related to any prior injury. If that was the case why hold him out? Again Snows stockpiling of goalie prospects tells the story IMO.

  14. avatar Mike L says:

I honestly dont see the big deal in this. Many players have strains when they come back to play after a long absence. Just look at all the sore muscles baseball players say they have during spring training. If he’s not set to play then dont play him, but I doubt this is something serious.

  15. avatar WM says:

Is there still a chance we can trade him for a zamboni?

  16. avatar Isles fan says:

I say sit DP and let him take the rest of the year to either get better or once and for all be done. If he is done then the insurance policy will take over.

We really don’t need him this season anyway. We will need him in the next couple of years when we are that much better and truely built to win.

Others might not agree with me but I think that Roloson is playing as well as DP has ever played.

  17. avatar eric nystrom says:

Please retire already.. So that we can move forward and forget that we could have had chosen two real superstars in the draft..

  18. avatar Isles fan Ken says:

It’s probably not a big deal, but until I see him back on the ice for the isles, I’ll always think the worst.

  19. avatar misterpink says:

Well, if anything, I hope this means he’ll see some more time in the AHL.

Even if he *was* able to go Tuesday – He hasn’t even made it through one full game yet and they were still going to go with Tuesday as the last game of his conditioning stint?

How about you get through at least one single minor league hockey game first for 60 minutes.

Love the guy, but this is past comical and squarely in to the realm of sadness.

  20. avatar joey says:

this is probably the groin. it’s the one muscle that needs constant exercise when you’re a goalie. when you sit out for 12 months, thats whats gonna happen…it’ll push his timetable back a few weeks but thats about it. he’ll be back by feb 1.

  21. avatar Jethro09 says:

Where is this “tightness”? If its not related to his groins or knees, he should be fine. If its groin or knee-related, that could be a big problem.

  22. avatar beatlebailey says:

Good Luck to DP. Hope he takes all the time he needs to get back healthy..in the meantime Go Roli!!! and do not trade Biron even if DP comes back..we cant take the chance

  23. avatar tom says:

it’s over, move on, buy out.

  24. avatar Seth says:

    are you kidding me?!

come on DP!!! this is pathetic!!!!!!

i can’t believe i used to make fun of rangers fans about Dan Blackburn’s injury prone career and his hilarious attempt of making a comeback with 2 blockers…

in 2 years DP will be trying to make his hockey comeback with a prosthetic leg!!!!

  25. avatar Staten Islander says:

SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH. I knew it was too good to be true. Well at least he has 12 more years to get healthy. I feel for the guy.

  26. avatar felix says:

of course there will be some affects somewhere on his boyd related to the surgeris or not. he did dnot effectively play from over a year. I would have been surpirsed if he had no effects whatsover from the game. this is being caustious. I wish he could have more time down there but the rules are the rules.

  27. avatar kevin fitz says:

I try to be as positive as possible. But I don’t like the “he will be re-evaluated today” portion of this. If it were normal tightness in a non surgically repaired area, why would any evaluation be needed?

  28. avatar UIF says:

It may just be tightness from not playing, and they don’t want him to push it. The problem is with the way they handle DP injury news, there’s simply no way to tell what it is or how serious.

Hopefully for Ricky it is just some tightness…a pulled muscle from lack of use or something.

  29. avatar Big Boy says:

hahahahaahahahaahahahahaha thank god our goaltending prospects are actually looking good

  30. avatar Scott W says:

It is amazing the reactions people have about this. There are posts saying he is done and to retire. Are you serious? Roloson is 40 years old. Who will be our goaltender next year? Give the guy a break. He has been through major surgery. Lets hope our former ALL STAR goaltender comes back. He is way to important to this organization. He is a top 10 goaltender when healthy. None of us are doctors, so let this pay out before we call for him to quit or buy him out.

  31. avatar Hockey1919 says:

Is it that unexepected that a player that has not played any meaningful games in over a season and a half would feel tightness? Wasn’t he supposed to play less than half a game the first time out and played longer? There is no rush for him to come back so it looks like this is all precautionary. There’s no need for the Chicken Little attitude.

What I don’t get are the extremists that seem to take a perverse pleasure if his career is over. It’s ludicrous that an Islander fan would hope that they lose one of their biggest assets to injury. News Flash: if he is hurt and decides not to retire he still collects the cash and there is still the cap hit so be careful for what you wish for.

  32. avatar JimfromStjames says:

Considering this is really his first “training Camp” in almost a year, a little tightness seems like no bog deal.

#10, with Mad Mike, can’t help but wonder about a lot of stuff…

  33. avatar drive45 says:

This is why you don’t give 15 year contracts!!!! Stupidist move Wang ever made.

  34. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Hockey1919, amen. I mean, did we just expect DP to come back after pretty much 18 months not playing and not be tight or end up pulling something? This isn’t original to DP, or DP’s condition. It is what it is when a top-level athlete spends time away, then attempts to re-enter a highly-skilled, highly-competitive sport. I can’t say he’ll be fine, but I can say this wasn’t unexpected, and as such, I’m not going to sweat over it.

  35. avatar BC says:

I agree in saying I feel for him. He is as hard of a worker and as much of a competitor in the NHL as any player, and it must be tough for him to not have played an NHL game in so long. I also agree that I don’t think that tightness is a huge issue, and I feel that the only reason he is being reevaluated is to ensure that there is no possible way he gets hurt again.
And why are suddenly a huge amount of readers going at his throat, saying that he should retire? Two years ago, he was our MVP, and now that we have Tavares and Moulson he’s “worthless”. He’ll come back, and I think at the end of his career we will be able to look back and say we had a pretty good player between the pipes.

  36. avatar VanVoorhees says:

go play a game of pickup this week and tell me you don’t have tightness for a few days after.

  37. avatar SB says:

I am a goalie that played with alot of islander players between 2005-2007. I went through 6 knee surgeries. One put me out of commission for almost a year. There is always tightness in your legs (especially your groin) coming back from long layoffs. It is very tough on your lower body. Lets not all go crazy. they will take his time with him and he will be back after christmas.

  38. avatar the bomber says:

if you think garth snow doesnt know DP is done you are all wrong. the man just blew two very high draft picks on goalies AFTER signing Munroe, Roloson, and Biron. Snow is rushing DP back so he blows it all out one more time and Garth can get out from under that rediculous contract he gave him. a contract that will forever make Garth look like an idiot. Who signs a guy who would gladly take a 5 year deal for 15 years?? Garth should go to jail for that deal. I’m sure DP gives him cash back under the table.

  39. avatar Lorne Myers says:

DP is not in our future plans. Can we please all just face reality on this.

  40. avatar Patrick says:

I thought Snow was a bystander on the 15 year contract. Wasn’t that all Mr. Wang’s doing?

  41. avatar Dan says:

This was going to be a long road back. Take your time. He will return. Its not his fault he is injured. Lets hope he gets back on the ice soon…

  42. avatar dan says:

WOW. can this guy get his health together. At least we have Tavares and Okposo now. They are the future and present of this team. If he retires his cap hit comes off and i think most of the salary is insured so it wouldn’t be the worst thing.

    LETS GO ISLANDERS

  43. avatar dan says:

the bomber (38) That contract is not on the snowman. Its all on wang.

  44. avatar the bomber says:

was snow the GM ?? well if i was GM and a goalie, id say you cannot sign this guy for 15 years. he has never played a full season as a top flight nhl goalie. its a position where anyone can get hurt. so why 15 years? even 10 would be too much, but if you wanted to sign a guy and force him to stay on LI forever, I’m sure 10 would be plenty. even if he comes back, this guy will be a 30 game a year guy the last 7 years of this contract – its really unreal how stupid this deal was from a business standpoint.

i dont blame DP, i like him and wish him well. i just cannot get over how dumb this is…

  45. avatar Staten Islander says:

bomber, it was a dumb contract, no doubt, but that signing is ALLLLLLLLLLL charles wang, snow had only just come on board when that happned

  46. avatar Stumpy32 says:

The bomber – I don’t think Snow “knows” that DP is done. However, I do think he believes there is a chance that he may never be the #1 goalie he once was, and by drafting highly-skilled goalies, he’s hedging his bets on both ends, which is what he should be doing all the time. The fact is, even if DP comes back this season and has a monster 2nd half, and gets us into the playoffs, and hell, even wins a round, he can still rip apart his knee again at any moment. He’s beyond susceptible to another injury, noting his past surgeries. And being that there’s 12 more seasons on the contract, can you blame Snow for being cautious?

  47. avatar the bomber says:

being cautious is not playing a few periods at the bridge and then bringing him back a week later (original plan). no way the guy will be better than what we have at the NHL level this year. we should have learned from the past. DP should not play a game for the isles this year….so my only question is whats the rush?? at 100% for both, roloson is every bit as good as DP has ever been….we do not need DP right now…

  48. avatar me says:

Right and as the saying goes. I have a bridge to sell you.

  49. avatar Gutty34 says:

Not sure why he is not scheduled to play at least 5 – 8 games in the bridge before we even consider bringing him back. This guy needs a minimum of 5 full games to get the body moving like it used to. I hope the tightness is just from not playing but can anyone say with confidence that even if he sits out 5 years that we wont all hold our breaths every time this guy steps into goal. It sucks watching a game saying is this his last save….is he gonna get up…I honestly dont believe he will ever be 100% again. Too many surgeries in my opinion on every key body part required to excel at this position – arguably the most grueling of any in sport. I really hope we look to buy him out or he needs to retire so we can all move on. Not a knock on his skill or desire to play and win…..just reality. I would love Dipi in net every night…who wouldnt…but his body has failed him and now everyone must start thinking of the long term success of this team and not simply say…when Dipi returns. We need to move ahead with the premise that it would be great for Dipi to be part of this but we are making moves as if he wont. Roli is playing great hockey so I see no need to change this up for the remainder of the season. He has completely earned the #1 spot period!!

  50. avatar VanVoorhees says:

I just got back from the gym and my arms are stiff…

  51. avatar JimfromStjames says:

Just for fun I had all of the people in my office just stand in postion. Knees bent, as if they were going to make the big save. The Guys who could actually get into that position as all clamming about how there knees & backs hurt, could you imagine is they actually made a save?

Get your office to try this too… Very Funny.

  52. avatar JJ says:

Does anybody know if it’s possible for DP to stay in Bridgeport past the two week conditioning stint?

He’s clearly not ready to play in the NHL, and needs probably another month or two in the AHL. To have him with the big club is a total waste of rehab time.

  53. avatar mLem says:

to anyone STILL confused as to why he was only scheduled for 3 rehab starts…it’s all the NHL will ALLOW…this is not an Islander decision. I’m not sure if the (possible) setback allows him more time to rehab or not, but if you don’t think the Islanders are doing everything to handle this properly then I don’t know what else to tell you.

  54. avatar NICK says:

    there goes trading biron

  55. avatar therain93 -- terriers fan says:

I wrote about this in an earlier comment thread. Management and DP may be very well colluding to prolong his conditioning stint beyond the 2 week margin. He plays a handful of games spread apart, goes back onto the IR, plays a handful in late/jan or feb and then we have the olympic break… and suddenly it’s march and the trade deadline…..

  56. avatar TimQ says:

If it is unrelated to previous injuries it must be an ankle. Hips and knees have already been covered.

  57. avatar Ricky says:

Why does everyone put DP on a pedestal? He was never a high prospect when the Isles drafted him. If he comes back this seaons, he will play at max 3 games and then get injured. Put a fork in him, he’s done. That’s is why Snow drafted goalies this summer, because he knows DP is done.

  58. avatar BringBackNyles says:

When do we make him GM?

  59. avatar thepolishprince says:

Good thing goaltending is now an organizational strength eh?
