Great news — it’s imperative that the Isles start to develop defensemen.

  2. avatar Frank nyc says:

NICEEE. I guess Garthy made some good choices. 2 Dmen on team canada. They have a deep group to draw on, so it is an honer to have 2 guys in that group.

  3. avatar Metalcoconut says:

That is great news especially considering the thought of what we are looking at on the current blue line. Hopefully we can forget about these 7-1 nights a couple years down the road.

  4. avatar kevin fitz says:

Hamonic is really intriguing. He may end up being a major draft steal down the road :)

  5. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Congrats to both and good luck. Represent the Orange and Blue and hope they have a successful future for many years here on the island.

  6. avatar Moose says:

nice finally some good news after all the depressing DP stuff.

Now Garth give them both the 9 game call up.

  7. avatar pete debenedetto says:

This staff is going in the right direction!!!

  8. avatar Will C. says:

Now if we only had future goaltending. I’m not sold on our system and who we currently have.

  9. avatar kabbage says:

This is huge considering the calibre of players that didn’t make that squad (ie.-Dylan Olsen 2009 1st round draft pick among others)

  10. avatar bossy22 says:

Great news and congrats to both Travis and Calvin as well as the Islanders brass. I still remember 2 training camps ago when the camp was held here in PEI and I had a chance to speak with Garth Snow and he said to me…..watch this kid Hamonic, “it’s his first camp and he looks like he can play now”. Followed by…”he is going to be really good”.

  11. avatar RAMen says:

Aside from Tavares having an all star season so far, this is the best prospect news I think I’ve heard in a while. Having players on team Canada is a real vote of confidence. Congrats!

  12. avatar Blizzard says:

…nice, some good news for Islander fans!!!! Thanks CB.

  13. avatar kabbage says:

I am excited, deHaan, Hamonic, Petrov, Nillson, Niemi and possibly Donovan all at the WJC. I might just have to slide over to Saskatoon and catch a game or three!

  14. avatar Mark P says:

GREAT News…..Now sign Hamonic-maybe he can get some games in at the end of the Season. From the reports, he may be something of a Brendan Witt….without feeling like the puck is a live Grenande.

  15. avatar Irish Isle says:

    This is good,
now if we could partner them with Cam Fowler, imagine that D Corps

  16. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Wow. Maybe trading our entire stockpile of picks for De Haan doesn’t look so crazy now. And Harmonic? Impressive. I can’t say I’m rooting for Canada, but I’ll be rooting for them.

  17. avatar JPinVA says:

It’ll be nice to see both playing with and against the best in the world. The Isles can really use them and we’ll probably be seeing them in 2011.
If they don’t take two more goaltenders in the next draft they shouldn’t face the same depth issues come 2012 and beyond.
I wish they would have spent a little to keep the team competetive while we wait, but you have to give snow and associates some credit for restocking the pond… It would have been nicer to see more Hamonics than Katics… but I guess they have a vision for what this team will be in another two years. SMALL.

  18. avatar mmm22 says:

The developing team is sort of small but better small and talented then big and mediocre… Not to mention this team has so much cap space they can fill in the holes if they ever decide to spend some of it.

  19. avatar blue chip bonzo says:

    Canada- de Haan, Hamonic

    Finland- Niemi

    Russia- Petrov, Klementyev

    Sweden- Nilsson

USA- Donovan would make seven, the most participants of any NHL team.

    Bravo Ryan, bravo Garth!

  20. avatar dan says:

    “very nice”

  21. avatar Irish Isle says:

So we have 5 D in the wjc, 1 forward, 1 goalie

  22. avatar John says:

Maybe with all these defensive prospects in the system, we might have to rethink the upcoming draft and get a scoring winger. CB – what do you think of Rhett Rakhshani and his prospects.

  23. avatar dally mac says:

Sounds great….go Canada…go…Sixth straight title on the way. Hope my Islanders sweep the Rangers series the next two nights as well. If we don’t win one of the two the hole will start to be dug.

  24. avatar FourCupsin4yearsnot60 says:

Great. An important 1st step. I’m not always a fan of the comparisons, especially at such a young age, but since everyone else does it here all the time; I dont see Zack Kassian on the Canadian WJC roster.

How about Gabriel Bourque and Brandon Kozun, out of no where. If we are excited our 1st and 2nd round picks made the team, they must be doing back flips in LA and Nasville.

  25. avatar steve says:

i hate it when things like this happen. cause it means either the guys running the islanders and team canada don’t know what they are doing. or we need to take a few deep breathes around here, on occasion.
CB. really nice work on calling out the guy who was over the top critical on tavares. theres nothing wrong with expressing your opinion. just man up when your wrong.
