ISLANDERS 3, BOSTON 2 (OT)
Home game interactive Plus/Minus

Chris Botta on Twitter

9:35 pm - Time for some interactive Post/Minus after the Islanders’ 3-2 overtime win over Boston.

Plus: When the game is played like the first period, the NHL is the best live spectator sport on earth…and second place is not even close.

Plus: Gutty penalty kill by the Islanders down 2-1 mid-second leads to…

Plus: Okposo to Tavares to Moulson for the Islanders first even-strength goal in three and a half games.

Plus: Kyle Okposo has eight assists in his last five games. He is 5-17-22 in 31 games and does so much more, yet he wasn’t even one of SI’s 40 final candidates for a U.S. Olympic spot.

Plus: He earned his minus on Boston’s second goal, but otherwise Blake Comeau played…well, he played like a 1970s Boston Bruin. Perhaps the coaches will remember this game the next time they’re thinking of scratching him for a week. He’s only 23 years old.

Plus: The money you could have won betting two months ago that fans would gasp in horror whenever Jack Hillen is injured. Even before he took the shot in the foot in the first period tonight, Hillen has been playing hurt all week.

Plus: How much scoring his first NHL goal meant to Rob Schremp.

Plus: Dwayne Roloson does it again.

Plus: Mark Streit may not be playing like a Norris contender this season, but he’s the yeoman of the blue line. With another 29 minutes he earned a few more pactices off.

Minus: No doubt the 16-2 shot differential in the third period was completely misleading and just no big deal. Right. Seems like it happens every other home game. Tonight it played like a rope-a-dope strategy.

Plus: “Burn it to the Ground” thrown on the ground.

Plus and Minus: You can make the case the Islanders have won more games with more players not producing than any team in the NHL this season.

Plus: If the Islanders can figure a few things out, they can get fat this week on Florida and what is currently a very bad Rangers team unless they get Brandon Dubinsky back.

Your Plus/Minus from tonight’s game in Comments.

    Plus-New Goal Song
Plus-Schremp and Comeau earning their stripes
Minus-The tilted ice in the third (got a lil scary to watch but they survived)

  2. avatar Staten Islander says:

    Plus..Rollie coming up huge again

Plus..Sim getting under Chara’s skin all night

Plus..Neilsen making like J.P. Parise in April of ’75

    Plus..Schremp finally getting one

Plus..Streit saving the Rollie late in the 3rd

Minus…most of the 3rd period played in the Isles zone

  3. avatar Isles fan in CA says:

Way to get one guys!! Roloson is a beast!!

  4. avatar akeem says:

Nice to see the Isles get back to what made them successful earlier on in the season – Overtime! I was sorry to see them get away from that…

  5. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

Nice to get this win, and many of the players we need to make a difference are.

  6. avatar Bigboo says:

Plus – Power Play clicking again.
Plus – The sweet no look pass by Tavares to Moulsson.
Plus – Frans netting the winner with his signature breakaway move.

Minus – Another D-Man out. Hopefully Jack will be okay…. But it’s time to bring in some help Mr. Snow

  7. avatar Ethan K says:

    WHOOOO YEAH FRANS!

Love it. Exciting game from start to finish. The Bruins seemed massive, but we kept up until the end and finished nicely. Thank god it was Frans on the breakaway, he always gets it done.

Love the new goal song. It’s the one I voted for anyway.

Blake Comeau played well tonight, Roloson played well as always.

Great game all around. The third period was heart pounding, but they gained energy in the last 4 minutes and drove it into OT.

  8. avatar Tony says:

Nice effort. I didn’t realize how dirty/chippy Boston is.

  9. avatar Seth says:

Plus: Blake Comeau with a great game.
Plus: Rob Schremp with his first NHL goal.
Plus: Dwayne Roloson continues to give the team a chance to win.
Minus: Brendan Witt and Freddy Meyer with -2 each.

  10. avatar JPinVA says:

+ Best game of Blake Comeau’s young career. If he keeps playing like that the only time he’ll have days off is when he can’t skate.
+ Dwayne Roloson… with all the hub bub about DP lately SOME FOLKS refuse to give this guy credit for the success this season. He has played great, and it’s like he’s just holding a spot for the messiah. Nice job Dwayne… very nice.
+ If Kyle Okposo in an Islander jersey doesn’t get you a little excited your watching the wrong sport. He hasn’t scored since Tiger was the greatest golfer to ever live, but he has still been AWESOME all that time.
+ Frans… there were some comments about [what has he done lately] in the last thread… well… 15 mins of damn solid hockey EVERY NIGHT isn’t bad.. and then you get moments like tonight as an added bonus… THAT’S WHAT.
    - A third period with five defensemen and some weak play in their own zone.
+ Getting through that third period with a point and a chance for another.
+ Jon Sim… I guess my Zedno/Tiger Woods line wasn’t appreciated… so I won’t repeat it. He’s this year’s Andy Hilbert Award [LAME DUCK] winner. The guy is like a Timex… okay… maybe a slow timex, but he just keeps on ticking.
I hope they keep this lineup for a few weeks. Sutton needs to replace Gervais, and [dead horse warning] Weight needs to replace Bailey… and we can start talking playoffs again.

  11. avatar Frank nyc says:

That first period was grreat. It was all speed and battle. fantastic to watch. Blake Comeau = awesome. He played great in every faze. KO is a man beast. JT behind the back to Moulson.

  12. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

keep Blake up. He needs to play like this every game. He lost some battles, but was noticed out there for positive things only, IMO. I’m a big Comeau fan and have been since we drafted him. He gives us size, makes us better defensively (his play on the PK was great) and sees the ice very well.

  13. avatar Steven says:

Frans is unreal on breakways. Goalies have very little chance against him. Let’s see if Comeau and Schremp can keep it going.

  14. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

CB, the Plus about Jack Hillen is spot on. I never would have thought I would be disappointed that he’d get hurt and not knowing his status for the next game. Comeau definitely had himself a game and needs to play with this intensity night in and night out. I can see him having huge games against the Rangers this week. Is Roli back in net Monday against the Panthers, and then him and Marty split against the Rags? Or is it Marty on Monday and then a split? LETS GO ISLANDERS.

  15. avatar stevedepot says:

Comeau was good on the PK. Roloson stole this game for us. His rebound control in the third helped as we were outshot and outhit that period. I want to point out something disturbing. This team we love has a very bad habit of forgetting how to finish hits in their own end in the 3rd period and more often than not, we wind up chasing. Stick checking and poke checking is for pond hockey. I keep hearing Gordon talking about establishing a forecheck but you cannot do that in the offensive end when you’re on your heels in the defensive end. Late in the 3rd, Blake Comeau threw a big hit in our own zone, probably the 1st. That woke up the crowd and the team. Great to see Frans get one finally. take these 2 points and run. CB, great point on the 1st period.

  16. avatar IronIslander77 says:

Comeau deserves to play and develope on this team. I am not convinced that he deserves to be scratched for 10 days at a time when guys like Park/Tambs float with no consequence. Keep it up Blake, the coaches will be forced to play you just like last year. Congrats Shremp!

  17. avatar Section 320 rocks says:

What about Sim?? I would scratch him before Park or Tambs.

    Plus: Rolosons play
    Plus: Good crowd
Minus: The third period was shaky
Minus: Freddy Meyer had a less then stellar game
Plus: Sweet pass from JT to Moulson for the game tying goal
Plus: Schremp with his first NHL goal
Minus: Was I the only one who thought the refs were awful? Especially after period one?
Indifferent: Was I the only one laughing when Sim went flying after trying to hit Chara? Good for him to go back at him and knock him off balance though I still say someone (Tambs or Bridgeport) should be here in his spot but I guess that is why I am not the coach nor the GM.

  18. avatar MT says:

Didn’t realize it was Schremp’s first goal, I thought he had scored in one of his previous games, but good for him.

Props to the new goal song. It works.

    And go Fransy!

  19. avatar MJS says:

Plus – The two guys Gordon refuses to play/weren’t worth playing notching points. Hope that continues while they have a chance.

    Plus – Roloson, enough said.

Minus – Taking a break from the forecheck in the third period, as per the usual.

  20. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

+ Moulson XXX. + Rollie the Goalie. + New Goal Song works. – Jack “Ijust want to play hockey” Hillen getting hurt! + Rob Schremp getting his first Islanders goal. + Section 313 rocking as usual

  21. avatar Neil says:

Plus…taking the waterwing jersey and throwing it on the ground…”I ain’t part of your system”

Plus…John Tavares better than anyone hoped he could be

  22. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

+ the PK was huge tonight and Comeau was a big part of that
+ the energy that Schremp and Comeau to the lineup tonight
+ the celebratory pile in the corner after Neilsen’s GW goal
+ gutting it out with 5 “D” most of the way
    - Thought FMIV was terrible tonight.
+ Dwayne Roloson gives this team a chance to win EVERY time he plays\
    - Just nitpicking but how is Roloson not one of the 3 stars tonight??
+ 6-1 in the last 7 home games with a bunch more coming up
+ CB with the Andy Samberg shoutout. . Niiiiice.

  23. avatar biggie says:

Is it me or does Meyer lead the team in taking bad/lazy penaltys. Wow. Also, he skates like he has a stick in his…you know.

  24. avatar Neil says:

They play that same song for goals at Flyers games

  25. avatar K-Rob says:

Plus – My Jon Sim sign mad it on the screen 3 times
Plus – My Jon Sim sign was on the NESN broadcast
Minus – no one commented on it here yet
    Plus – We won

  26. avatar Thomas says:

Plus – Roloson giving us a chance to get 2 points. How he wasn’t named a star is beyond me

Plus – Tavares continues to find ways to get it done

Minus – Park and Thompson. Too much ice time, not enough results. These 2 should not be out there 16 minutes a night. Our PK was a TON better with Nielsen and Comeau pressuring the puck for once. The 2 of them and the puck was in our zone almost the entire time. Park finally broke up one pass after I yelled “attack the puck” from my seat at that end of the ice in the 3rd period

Minus – Meyer and Witt both look lost on the ice, the Bruins second goal should have never happened as both blew assignments.

Plus – No more of that crappy goal song

    Plus – 2 points

Plus – Gordon not starting 4th line players in OT. Another great play by Comeau and a great finish by Nielsen

  27. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

Plus- Nielsen’s parents to come all the way from
Dennmark and see their son with the huge
    Game winning Goal. Life-long memory.

  28. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Plus – 2 much needed pts.

Plus – The way the Isles responded after killing off that crucial penalty.

Plus – JT’s no look behind the back pass to set up MM.

Plus – Nielsen’s parents being able to see their kid score in OT for the big win.

Plus – Rollie on a Roll at home.

Minus – Isles need more depth on D after seeing Hillen get knocked out of the game.

    Plus – Vintage Jerseys

Minus – Sports Illustrated NEVER knew anything about hockey or hockey players.

Plus – KO playing another STRONG game.

  29. avatar Tony D says:

Plus – What a first period. I agree with CB. If you didnt like watching this, you just dont get it.

    Plus – Moulson gets 15th

Plus – Schremp lights the lamp

    Plus – Rollie the goalie

Minus – Freddy Meyer invisible on the B’s second goal

Also need to give credit where credit is due: Thomas robbed JT at the end of the third. Looked for a second like an open net but he made the play to force OT.

  30. avatar James says:

Thompson to me does his job, he is a 4th liner that skates hard every time he is on the ice, what more do you want? That is why he is still on the ice right now

Anyway great win tonight. I start with the minus so we can overtop it with all the pluses lol

    - 3rd period defense and D overall; While it seems Mac is doing a good job with his time here, some of the other D are lost out there. Witt, Gervais and Meyer make mistakes most nights. Add to that Hillen getting hurt, now our 2 most consistent Dmen at the beginning of the season (Sutton and Hillen) are both out. Hope Hillen is ok.

+ Roloson; again what a pick up. Some Oilers fan wanted to thank me and the Isles organization for taking as he put it the “old man” of their hands. Yea I bet they kinda miss him now lol

+ Comeau; was EVERYWHERE tonight, he showed why we need to play him every single night.

+ Okposo; every time I see him deke around someone I have to smile and thank the good lord we have him on our team.

+ Sim; getting under Charas’ skin tonight. I think we need to look at each player and what they do best. Just because they don’t score, does not mean they are not worthy. I can guarantee you Sim creates more power-plays for us than any other player on this team due to his hustle.

+ Franz; sweet move in OT and great dog-pile celebration. This team shows emotion and I love it

+ JT and Moulson; absolutely electric, starting to become one of the best tandems in the NHL. That pass by JT was SICK.

+ New Goal Song; Thank goodness lol

  31. avatar Craiggers says:

Plus – Frans coming through with an insane move

Plus – Moulson playing great thanks to Tavares

*** Wasn’t at the game tonight. What was the new goal song that was played???

  32. avatar Dan says:

Great game by comeau and Roli. Comeau has a spot on this team if he plays like that every night. Brought a physical aspect that has been lacking.

can we just sweep the rags this week?

    Lets go Islanders

  33. avatar Dan says:

O and this is a major plus: last year we finished with one 18 goal scorer. This year with only 32 games played we have two 15 goal scorers and they are under 30 years old. That doesn’t include Okposo who has 5 but will start putting some in soon. Im excited about this team.

  34. I saw the highlights. Schremp’s celebration was awesome (good for him on netting his first) and that pile on was amazing. Good job on Comeau’s hit on Paille and it was funny seeing little Jon Sim try to take down Chara. Good job being a pest, Mr. Sim.

  35. avatar Frustrated Voter says:

I couldn’t watch the game but how did Joensuu play? I am very anxious for his development to go well.

  36. Plus – Blake Comeau, second strong game in a row.
    Plus – Schremp
    Plus – Rolo
    Plus – First line
    Minus – Third period
Minus – Witt (move those old legs)
Keep Schremp and Comeau ON THE ICE !!!

  37. avatar TuxTax says:

Schremp had some buzz in his step tonight, Comeau had a great game and Okposo comes up big in all situations(except for goalscoring). I’m really liking Mcdonald over most of our defensmen…once Ricky comes back its time to get a real dman for Biron. Nice 2 stolen points tonight, hopefully Fransies exciting goal sparks something on this homestand. Let’s Go Islanders!!!

  38. Plus – I still don’t notice much chemistry besides that of the JT, KO, MM line…BUT I notice a nice camaraderie between the team even with players like Shremp in celebration of his goal (CONGRATS!! I really hope he stays up here for a while and gets a fair shot), and while the pile on Frans was great – a lot of the players went straight to Roli and had similar energy. Roli is outstanding, and I couldn’t be happier to finally have him on my team.
I noticed him for years look like a solid guy to lean on between the pipes, he’s all that and then some.

Minus – clearing our zone in the 3rd, still big lapses of missing energy. I noticed FMIV mistakes a lot tonight too. Bruno is a given.

Minus – I don’t know what to say – Bailey looked lost. I’m officially very worried.

Plus – JT is sick. I’m so proud of MM, and KO…just outstanding in all zones. I would absolutely HATE playing against someone like him. He seems like he’s everywhere.

I hope the rest of the games I go to this month are like this…

  39. avatar Paul says:

I’m going to give some credit to the D considering they were one man short!

  40. avatar german islesfan says:

+ I was wrong with my 2:5 predict
+ my german landsman and favorite german player marco sturm scores to bad for him it was a high stick :-)
+ we overtake the rags and flyers
keep it up on monday boys!

  41. avatar Justin says:

Ref’s put their whistles in their pockets last nite…..awful…Go Isles!!!!

  42. avatar tommyG says:

Line Combos were great! each player suiting each other! great game its not a just a one game thing for these players either this is their skills they just gotta learn to play like that all the time there only 23! lol
Break up the lines though so we get that #1 spot haha

  43. avatar mikef says:

Plus- J sim on the 4th line plays an extremely effective game and throws the body around
Minus – B witt’s statuesq position in the goal crease on the 2nd goal; we’d be better off with 5 D.
Plus- Go Go realizes he needed a boost and pairs KO, JT & MM back up

  44. avatar joe fred says:

Did not see the game last night but caught the highligts, who made that feed to Nielson? That was a beautiful pass and terrific finish! Was their a good crowd on hand? Over 12K? This homestand is huge so we need the fans support.

  45. avatar IronIslander77 says:

Joe -it was Comeau that flipped that pass to Frans for the Finnish finish…

  46. avatar IronIslander77 says:

Or is that a Danish Finish?

  47. avatar The New Isles GM says:

Minus: The Islanders still got manhandled in the third period. I think Garth needs to go for a cup of coffee with Steve Webb and Chris Botta

  48. avatar NICK says:

I was at the game and boy, when they scored and that goal song went off, it seemed way louder then burn it to the ground.

  49. avatar Chris Mc says:

Im the biggest Comeau fan out there, so watching the game he played yesterday was very satisfying. The pass he made to Neilsen was beautiful. But equally as beautiful was that feed JT made to Matty Ice for the second goal. I know we toot his horn after every game, but Tavares definitely is something special and we struck gold with Moulson.

  50. avatar miket239 says:

Wow. What an incredible and impressive win last night. Personally I was very surprised. I figured our Isles had hit a wall and the Bruins were on fire lately. Then I heard Sutton was out. I figured we’d get man-handled just like the Flyers game. But man was I wrong. I loved how our guys went AT Zdeno Chara last night! I mean watching Park and Sim go AT Big Z was inspiring. And personally, I dont care if DP ever comes back while we have Rolo. The guy is a rock. WHat a great game to watch! Looks like all they needed was some home cookin. Congrats to Robbie Schremp on his 1st NHL goal. Keep it up guys!

    Lets go Islanders!

  51. avatar miket239 says:

Oh yeah 1 more thing…Blake Comeaus best game as an Islander last night. I was in awe.

  52. avatar UIF says:

Something about Boston brings out fantastic play in the Islanders this year. For all my criticism of moving him to the wing, Bailey was, well, conspicuous out there along the boards. If this is simply a lesson-type deal, and not a set strategy to take your future second-line center and convert him to wing, then I can see the benefit.

  53. avatar Dan says:

What a game. Reminds me of the one a few years back where Peca tied it up agains the B’s with like 2 seconds left. That game ended in a tie.

  54. avatar gino says:

i think witt cab be very usefull if his playing time is limited to 10 min and 10 min only. 6th defenseman.

  55. avatar JoeRiverside says:

Plus – Comeau (I’ve been commenting that if we’re in the middle of a rebuild why is Comeau (and Tambs) watching from the press box). They need to play.
Plus – Tavares (and he’s only going to get better!)
Plus – Rolo (I’m a big DP fan, but he’s going to have to earn his starting position back).
Plus – Watching the rebuild moving along nicely.

  56. avatar Pete DeBenedetto says:

For all of the talk about Sim not being in this line-up…and I would say the same. But it occured to me, and I hope others, that his pestering of Chara throughout the game was nothing less than courageous. He can’t be more than 5’8″…180 pounds…yet time and time again he NEVER backed down from Z…or anyone else for that matter. Will he fight…no…why should he. The Bruins knew he was on the ice all the time. He will eventually put one or two in….that’s not his roll. He looks like a pain in the neck to play against. I welcome a Jon Sim type in my line-up every night. (Please however, no powerplay time:)

  57. avatar Staten Islander says:

Now that I’ve had a night to sleep on it, I think had that been a finals game lst night, we’d be talking about it for years.

  58. avatar schremp and comeau fan club says:

Gordon needs to play Schremp and Comeau every game. They are the future give them a chance. Sit Sim and Park over them, play the kids and see what happens.

  59. avatar Jason says:

Not to digress, but it’s interesting how the main part of Dwayne Roloson’s game is to stop the puck. Ten years ago, a stopper was traded to make room for a goalie who can handle the puck. That stopper is now a potential, albeit not likely, starter for the Canadian Olympic team, and Roloson has arguably been the Islanders’ MVP so far.

This is not a shot at Rick DiPietro, but he was never a part of the conversation when talking about the best goaltenders in the league. Roberto Luongo is, and he was given away because he didn’t have the “puck handling” asset.

Long story made short; when it comes to goaltenders, you go with the guy who makes saves.

*This is a shot at management at the time, not the player.

Dwayne Roloson has been an absolute Plus.

  60. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

comeau was the difference maker. he took chara and most of the boston lineup up off their game.

behind the back pass by tavares to set up goal was sweet. Tavares is only going to get better. Just love it.

PLUS – no negative comments on board.

  61. avatar Jim Clark says:

The 7th greatest Canadian of all-time had some nice words for Schremp (and Moulson) on Coach’s Corner Saturday night.

  62. avatar Islander says:

For those who asked I really did not notice Joensuu!.

  63. avatar Marc from Troy says:

If someone else mentioned it, I missed it… But didn’t anybody else notice the lineup Gordon sent out there at the beginning of OT? THREE forwards – that was KO playing right D. Stunned to see it, and had just begun telling my friend (and Bruins fan) how surprised I was to see the Isles come out so offensively to start OT when Comeau sent Neilsen on his way. Never finished the sentence and didn’t care.

Third period defense aside (obviously not easy playing team like Boston w/only 5 D, but still…), great game and great atmosphere. That’s the 2nd straight home game I’ve made the 7hr round trip to attend, and it was so worth it.

    Find another D, pronto, Garth!

  64. avatar Islander says:

#26 – Park and Thompson get the puck to the offensive zone when the 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines are unable to do so. That is why they are on the ice for 16 minutes. You do not judge players by watching one game. Watch all the games then make your negative comments.

  65. avatar blocknessmonster says:

KO olays the point on the PP and D in practice when there is not enough D. Hillen was out. Who better to pair with Streit when playing OT. Gordon was playing to win.

  66. avatar isles316 says:

Minus- the goal song. It’s the Flyers goal song and not a song intended for such purposes.

  67. avatar Big Van Vader says:

66- It’s better than Nickelback by a mile. Until they wake the hell up and give us back Rock and Roll Part 2, this will do.

And just for the record, if the DEVILS have it for their goal song and THEIR fans chant “YOU SUCK”, and THEY have no problem with it, why doesn’t Islanders “management” get it? (notice the quotations)

  68. avatar Tony D says:

I think KO was used as a d-man last year in some OT
    4 on 4s as well.

  69. avatar ralph says:

67…Rock and Roll Part 2?…lol you’re a minority with that selection….bro hymn is what the fans voted for.

  70. avatar Mlem says:

Ralph- rock and roll part 2 wasn’t an option…he is not in the minority, actually he is probably in the majority…HEY!!!

  71. avatar isles316 says:

The song itself is great by Pennywise, but the song is about an original band member that passed away early in life. I don’t feel right celebrating a goal with a song like that. Just my opinion. I know I’m in the minority.
