Discuss the game (and Kirill Petrov) right here
6:30 pm – My reaction to the Kirill Petrov/Anton Klementyev situation is in Comments.
5:15 pm, Bridgeport – I will start a live blog during Rick DiPietro’s comeback game in Bridgeport tonight in a new thread up top. Please talk about the Islanders’ game in Tampa Bay in this one. About an hour after the Sound Tigers’ game, I’ll have another story on DiPietro at FanHouse. Thanks for reading, and thanks for keeping me posted on tonight’s Islanders game.
*
12:30 am – I’ll be in Bridgeport tonight, live blogging the return to game action of Rick DiPietro and writing all about it for the new-look NHL FanHouse. A thread will also be open for readers to discuss (and update me on) Islanders at Tampa Bay.
Look for DiPietro to play the first period and if he is holding up well at intermission, to play to the middle of the second period. DiPietro still needs to take small steps. Scott Munroe started in the Sound Tigers’ 5-1 loss in Lowell on Friday, so Nathan Lawson will probably back up DiPietro tonight.
I was reading back yesterday on what I’ve written about DiPietro’s rehabilitation the last four months. Interesting to take a step back and see how, after I wrote on Aug. 24 that Rick’s progress was not exactly zipping along, the Islanders were quick to re-group the same day and announce that DiPietro was on schedule and “gradually easing his way in before the start of training camp on Sept. 12.”
It is Dec. 5 and DiPietro is just beginning a 20-30 minute dip in the water of a minor league conditioning assignment.
In October, my projection of a Thanksgiving return to game action for DiPietro was mocked by a veteran reporter at a major newspaper who watched Rick dink around on Oct. 19 at his first practice for 15 minutes. He said DiPietro was obviously closer to a return than “some people” thought. That was six weeks ago.
Darn, I was off by a week.
It’s only hockey. This stuff is fun.
*
Islanders catch a little bit of a scheduling break these next two games. They rested in rainy Tampa Bay on Friday while the Lightning had to travel to New Jersey and play the infuriating Devils. If all went well with their flight plans, Martin St. Louis and the boys got to their homes around 4:00 am. Advantage: Islanders.
Same thing when the Islanders play in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Peter Laviolette’s Flyers play Monday in Montreal. Even with all the perks of an NHL team, it’s never smooth getting through customs at midnight in Montreal. Been there, banged my head against that.
The Bolts’ New Jersey-to-home back-to-backs remind me of the time about a decade ago when Gary Bettman hitched a ride home on the Islanders’ charter after a Friday night game in Tampa Bay. Making conversation, the NHL commisioner asked when the Islanders’ next game was. He was told, “In about 19 hours.” Bettman said, “Seriously? You guys are gonna be tired.”
*
Of course, the Islanders play on Wednesday in Toronto against a rested Leafs squad. I know that because – PLUG ALERT – Wednesday is the night Point Blank and SOCIAL (across from the Coliseum) are providing a free buffet, free shots, $1 beers and a raffle at 7:00 pm. Between RSVPs here, on Facebook and via email, looks like we should more people than they had in Atlanta on Thursday. If you can, you really ought to be there. I hope you can make it.
On Sunday, I should have our Point Blank Night guests confirmed. The first two people I asked said yes and are just locking in their schedules. Last year we were joined at our events by Jack Capuano, Justin Bourne, Michael Picker and The Jaff, so I know where your expectations are.
*
Grass Isn’t Always Greener Dept: Chris Campoli, healthy scratch. Not sure what Chris expected simply with a change of address. Sure as heck don’t know what Bryan Murray thought he was getting for a late first-round pick. No matter what anyone thought or what becomes of that pick – the Islanders paid with extra picks to move to 12 and take Calvin de Haan – Chris Campoli for a first round pick gives Garth Snow major cred at the GM poker table.
Comments on this post and tonight’s games. No road live chats for a while: in Bridgeport tonight, on assignment Tuesday and hosting PB Night on Wednesday.

Discuss the game (and Kirill Petrov) right here

i still do not understand people killing the GM. aside from streit, and now moulson( at the end of the day, its still the GM’s call, right or wrong) he improved our goaltending, without spending six million dollars.
reread the predraft ink. as much as tavares was a no brainer, there was a lot of ink to go in another direction. its only 30 games, but its been fun. the team, again selected to be LAST, is in the hunt. youth is being served, and we are not bloated with bad contracts. yes, i wish they spent more money, but it is not like the owner is raking in the cash, and being cheap. year two of the rebuild, and the team is currently is right there. not an easy things to achieve.
getting kessel for a pair of #1′s and a high 2, or getting a late one for campoli.
i think the man did a nice job moving players for picks. was he the GM at the ryan smyth deal? i know the two players we traded have donen’t a thing at the NHL level. be nice if we could poach a rental from the oilers or canes for this season. we lose another defender and it could get ugly for 15 minutes a nite. -
Campolli sucked on and off the ice. That was a great Snow trade. I wonder if Ott would give us another first rounder for Geravis?
Peter Laviollette one more guy kicked out of Islanders country for no reason except to cater to Yashin and Mike Milbury being an idiot. He should do great with the Flyers.
-
CB, any idea who’s starting tonight for the Isles?
-
If we are grading Snow’s performance as a GM we have to factor in ownership, and THE COMITTEE(for as long as it lasted). On his own he’s done a respectable job. The team is operating below the cap floor (when you factor in Yashin and DP).
Some of his moves have been curious (6 goalies, trading up for deHaan, rushing Bailey, not signing any help for Tavares from a pool of vets), but he sure has made some good ones (Streit, Moulson… and hopefully later round picks like the kids from Sarnia)
*in an interview with ESPN Nolan said they made the same offer for Guerin that they did for Smyth… I wonder if that move would have been considered as good without all the tears at the airport.
I’d give the guy a B, but that’s because I really wanted to see Nolan stay and the team have some continuity behind the bench for more than 2 years. If they got Guerin and he signs and becomes captain, maybe there isn’t the mass exodus and Nolan is still behind the bench… but we don’t have Tavares. Makes you wonder. -
I hope DP does well with BP, and hope he stays injury-free this year. I wish Laviolette good luck w/Philly. I’m sure he’ll succeed there. As for Campoli, it’s about time we fleeced someone in a trade instead of the other way around.
-
I don’t know what anyone else thinks about DiPietro’s imminent return, but I for one am uneasy about it. This team has developed a chemistry with the Biron/Roloson combo and having Ricky back there with his puck handling dynamic is going to be a big change in the scheme AND how the D-men have to think about how they work the zone. I know he’s going to be here until I am in my 50′s, but things are going good now – I am afraid his coming back is going to make a mess of things again.
-
Harold-if anything with DP back we will be able to push the puck up faster. Have you seen how long it takes for our power play to start in our zone. They lost an average of 5 seconds every time the puck is cleared. Relax they are professionals and will adapt. Welcome back Rick, I’ll be there tonight to cheer you on. And also when you play one of the home and homes against the Rags. GOOD LUCK
-
I agree either way 1st rounder for Camps was a no brainer. Thought they would continue to move up during the draft and snag Colorado’s budding star Matt Duchene. But a lot is riding on the Dehaan pick. It’s early but he isn’t even the #1 defender on his current team. I’ll hope for the best. I do also feel a little hesitant in “welcoming” back DP. He has been nothing but trouble.
-
I really feel bad for Marty, the team just can’t find a way to score when he’s in net. But regardless of what this season has shown, his GAA. and Sv % is steady and I’m sure he’s still attracting interest around the league. Especially teams like Anaheim, Detroit, Columbus and even Atlanta who have some goaltending issues. As far as Snow goes, it’s all the little things he’s been doing to help this team. Sure there is plenty left to do, but as long as he continues to weed out the dead weight(MacDonald,Danis,Guerin,Campoli, Comrie and so on..) This team is only going to become better. I think next on the list to be out this year or next will be Witt, Gervais,Meyer and possibly Comeau. One can only hope we make a push for Kovulchuck this summer if he’s still available. Also, Bobby Ryan from the Ducks.
-
harold dipietros return will really help the undersized and undermanned defense as he will help the team get the puck out of the zone which will lead to less wear and tear on the defense. also when you have a goalie who is a good stick handler it is harder to dump the puck in the zone which will allow th isles defense to stay up near the blueline more and not sag back. this will keep our d fresher especially for the 3rd period because they are not getting plastered into the boards as much. As long as Dp can stop the puck he will really help the team into the playoffs if he is healthy.
-
WHOOOOAAAAH!!! When did Raffle Kelly become a Bolts ice Girl Chris?! YOWZERS that’s a tall drink of hot water… See you in BP tonight my brother!
-
CB,
You know how much I respect you, but i disagree with what you said about the “veteran reporter”. You were off by more than a week. The AHL is not the NHL and when someone says “return to action”, I believe it means the NHL. DP still has some more work to do. I think a return to the NHL is closer to Jan 1. But we are close.
-
Jim – It’s only December 5th. I doubt Dipietro will be in Bridgeport for 3 weeks. He’ll only play a few games in BP, playing a bit more each game, and then back to the NHL. Keep in mind that Roloson and Biron are still there, and that Dipietro doesn’t have to come back and play 60 minutes of every game.
-
Happy for Rick- hopefully everyone doesnt go and forget about him taking his time with things once he is in an actual game lol. Baby steps, thats the way to go. The Isles thankfully have goaltending that is perfect for giving Rick all the time he needs.
And I feel bad for Campy… but, he got what he wanted- and the Isles got a very good deal for him- so Im not upset about how things worked out. And if Campoli was here would we be seeing what a fine player Jack Hillen is turning out to be?
Looking forward to seeing the Isles up against Stamkos and hEdman, plus mainstay stars StLouis and Lecavalier. Good times, hope to see another big win down south!
-
Call me crazy….I still say keep Dipi out for the REST of the season!!!!!! Have him come back next year ready and @ 100%!
-
Not sure how anyone can say trading Campoli for a 1st rounder was a steal. The average first rounder taking that late in the draft turns into less then what Campoli already is. Plus Campoli makes very little money. It was a fair trade..but not a steal and certainly Campoli is better then Gervais…lets be honest here.
-
It was Campoli who asked to be traded, I agree that he’s better then Gervais. But the bottom line is he wanted out of here.
On a positive note we got rid of Comrie in that deal. -
ncISLESfan: Again somoen suggests this lol. Why in the world would anyone think it would be a good idea to wait another year to find out whether Rick can still cut it as an NHL goalie? Why would it be better to wait til we DONT have two competent guys already here just in case he cant? It makes no sense at all. He is never going to be 100% unless he plays games. This organization needs to know if Rick is still a good goalie- and putting that decision off for no reason at all helps absolutely nothing.
-
Come on ricky. Plz come back healthy and be good so that people can stop calling our Islanders a joke.
-
#19, gotta be kidding…a 5-7 Dman for a first round pick? If you don’t like that trade then you can’t be satisfied. That was a steal.
-
Ethan, They might be able to bring him back sometime in the next 10 days or so, but I think that he will need the 3 weeks because playing games is much different than practice. He WILL be rusty. I think even 3 weeks is kinda short but because of the athlete that DP is he will be ready.
-
#11 your response to harold was dead on. scrolling down reading his comments I couldnt responded any better. i must add. harold your worried about the chemistry between biron/ and roli? we dont need chemistry between two goalies we need them to win. iam sorry biron looks terrible this year and roli has beeen solid. everyone is waiting for the deadline to hopefully get a return for biron (a guy no-one wanted this summer). now he have one of our franchise guys who seems to acknowlegde he handled his situation wrong and is correcting it for future success. when deamed healthy by everyone involved id take him back in a second.
-
Would rather have Gervais than Campoli, especially if Campoli made it clear behind the scenes that he wanted to leave or didn’t buy into Gordon’s coaching philosophies. Both are at similar levels, imo.
I agree with ncislesfan. I would like to see DP kept out the rest of the season. Won’t happen though. I’ve turned the page on DP.
-
(20) Dan, the way they’ve started the season, NO ONE considers the Isles a joke right now. Tavares, Moulson, Okposo, Bailey, Hunter and the rest have shown that they are already WORLDS better than they were at the end of last year and they look to be a serious playoff contender. Let’s hope they stay healthy the rest of the season and can keep it going with Gordon’s system. Ricky returning…..I don’t know. At one time I would have said YES!, but now I am LOVING what I’ve seen out of Rollo. Just hope it doesn’t hurt team chemistry.
-
how could you say that a late first rounder doesn’t turn into anything more than Campoli??? thats just crazy to think that!
-
i think things will be fine once dp returns. to this point rolo looks like the 1a, (i think thats how cb put it). and just remember rolo has shared the net before in minnesota with fernandez. theyre all professionals- stay healthy(and in the net) dp!
-
No I am not referring to the chemistry between the goalies themselves, rather the dynamic between the way Ricky plays as opposed to Roloson & to a lesser extent, Biron.
Look, Roloson is an older guy, not going to be around long. But I like the way the team has come together now, and pro’s or not, bringing Ricky back is a vast change in playing styles. Are they pros and should adapt? Yes they should. But it is something to keep an eye on, when Ricky is on and the D is working with him well, it will be another thing for teams to worry about now and that’s a good thing. It’s just something in the back of my mind that concerns me, but we will see what happens.
-
Out of the eight remaing games Bridgeport plays in December is it wrong to think that DP would play 5? I would think that he should really be testes down there to make sure he can handle playing multiple games a week. And maybe even a back to back game. That would leave him ready to start the first game in january vs. the Thrashers, offensively talented but not a total threat.
-
Campoli was doing very well when he was traded last year, he was used on the power play and put up some numbers. Who knows what happened this season, possibly the pressure in Ottawa is intense. The trade at this point definitely looks like a steal for the Isles. I really think this Da Haan jid will be solid in the future. Still not sold on Gervais, would prefer a trade in the next 6 weeks for a solid defenseman. Ray whitney would look great in an ISLE uniform next to Streit on the powerplay.
-
Re #7 Harold and DP/Chemistry.
I think DP’s game is a PERFECT fit for the go-go Isles. 1-2 less passes getting the puck out of the zone can only make these “rats on cheese” quicker.
Will it take a coupla games for the other 5 guys on the ice to get used to it?
Sure…but that shouldn’t be a problem or an issue at this point in the season. The problem and the issue is and will continue to be DP’s ability to rebound as a goaltender and to STAY HEALTHY.
It’s gonna take a good 20 games of so before we will see if THE DP is back.
Just my opinion, from 2 time zones away.
(Disclaimer-I was someone who said last season that we’d NEVER see DP return. In fact, I still have the stub from his last game in PHX in January. Prove me wrong DP).
-
Swan, R U Kidding Bruno rather than Campy?? I think Bruno is first on my list to ship out. Nice guy but…..
-
Enough monday morning qb what is done is done. As far as dp goes he becomes a third d man with his puck handling ability IF gordon let’s him play that way. This ability keeps the other teams off from going too deep and thus helps our D.
-
CB in BP for DP
-
I think ultimately the key to the Isles’ long term future is DP’s health and ability to return to form. I remember DP STEALING games for Nolan’s misfits before getting injured … with a skilled set of young players in and entering the fray it will be very interesting to see.
That being said … we can’t expect DP to find his form for at least a good 15 – 20 games … he may not even play that many when he returns … so any games he plays this season I’m just looking for him getting his edge back … next season we should see DP get back on his game if he’s going to return to form at all.
-
enough w/ chemistry, dp is beloved by the team and chemistry is only talked about when your losing, winning cures all ills
-
(25) Big Van Vader Everyone makes fun of the Islanders when the 15 year man is talked about. I dont get it too. Many other players older then him have signed 12+ year deals. We started the long term signing so I don’t know why we are still laughed at!
-
I think the key here is SIX goalies. Let’s say DP spends 2+ weeks in BP and SHINES. He’s not coming back until they find a deal for Biron.
Then you have to consider when Koskinen returns. Where does he go? They have two legit AHL goalies(Lawson and Munroe), both might be ready for backup roles in the NHL (that may be a stretch, but they’ve played well and probably deserve a shot next year). If they sign Nilsson, he’s coming over (most likely).
We have all of these assets, but if we don’t do something with them all of the draft picks WASTED are going to come back to haunt the GM.
I think Munroe and Biron are both traded this year. Hopefully they both can fetch blueline help, even if it’s just AHL prospects… this system is devoid of “D”.
DP stays in BP until Koskinen returns or Biron is traded(Maybe both)… and next year BP has a goalie rotation that could help the Knicks. -
CB — Speaking of the future … another component that to this day is still transparent to us since he was drafted in 2008 … Kirill Petrov … In Islander Authorized it states that Snow is trying to get Kirill released from his deal with Kazan (BTW: Last I heard he was sent to Russian Jr. league) … It mentioned that Snow wouldn’t release Anton Klementyev from Bridgeport to the Russian Hockey Federation’s Jr. National team’s pre-camp unless they complied with Snow’s request.
Is there a way if you can find that out?
-
The laughing is because they signed a guy with bad hips to play goal for 15 years. Before that he proved NOTHING. DP is a great guy (I guess), and a good NHL goaltender… but he’s the FOURTH best goalie in the state, nevermind the league.
He has never won a playoff series (not entirely his fault), and yes, he has stolen some games… but for those of us with short memories… he wasn’t that sharp in key games. the most important game in the DP era was won by Yoda… and then he came back to LOSE the playoff series… and they dumped Yoda!
We don’t hold the bar too high around here because of the losing tradition… but maybe it’s time we do.
Let’s give Rolly AND Biron some credit. they have both played well, and we wouldn’t be in the playoff conversation without Rolly… even though he won’t be here for 13 more years. Others in the organization have a very good chance of playing their way right past the franchise goalie.
I am rooting for the guy because I hope his enthusiasm can bring something to the team… but I’d hate it to get in the way of some really good goaltending… which we’ve been getting.
Sorry for the long posts… I’m done. -
Isles in Blurry Def tonight. Thanks Dolans!
-
why do people act as if dp was good was he was healthly? He was always a burden even his so called good stick handling has caused many silly goals. The best thing for the team is for him to stay away!
-
it is such a waste of time to discuss trades of the past. garth snow has done a great job as GM…especially going from backup goalie straight to GM. as for current Isles happenings, all i have to say is that i hope for the best with DP but i am more than prepared for the worst. and i want a regulation Islanders WIN tonight BAD.
Lets go Islanders!
-
its all about the knee swelling …..if it stays relaxed after playing 3 games a week we might be out of the woods
fingers crossed.
-
If Snow gets Petrov out of his contract, I’d be absolutely floored.
The irony of that possibly happening a mere month after Filatov flees back to the KHL is just grand. Everybody who saw Petrov at the Super Series last month was raving.
-
#39 asks why people think DP was good. Maybe because he was an all star player and consider one of the best by other GMs and players like Marty Brodeur. Do you think they might know a little something about judging talent?
-
DP was an elite goalie in the NHL. He became the best stick handler, his rebound control is phenomenal, his glove is exceptional, quick feet, able to direct the puck and anticipate the play and one of the best (I think top 5 in shootouts).
Anyone paying attention might also have noticed every time there was international play Rick was always the undisputed starter ahead of guys like Thomas and Miller and several others.
The best thing that could happen to the team now is a health DiPietro back because it’s adding an elite player (far better then Roloson or Biron) at a critical position.
Many a goalie gets humbled behind this pathetic defense Snow has chosen to go with for the past several years to save money.
Not even fully healthy last year Rick had several spectacular moments and provided far superior goaltending them J. Mac or Danis did all year.
That would be fantastic news about Petrov if he comes over sooner then later.
-
K-P!! K-P!!
-
It’d be nice if they actually put the pre-game show on, this is getting ridiculous
-
uh the game is at 730, which means pregame at 7.. not 630..
-
Trade Gervais for a late first round pick. See if there would be any takers. lol.
-
can someone explain the petrov situation?
-
Would love if Garth could get KP out of his contract.
Even if this doesnt happen, it does make me respect the job Garth is doing even more. He is trying to use whatever leverage he has. KP is not developing as he should over there, obviously. Maybe this can happen.
Also Chris R, there is no way in hell the isles could get a first rounder for gervais. Campoli had upside and could produce some offense. Gervais cant. -
A great performance by DP would be just that, but his giving up some scores is not something to draw negative conclusions about. Another thing will be how he feels the next few post game days.
-
DP was backup backup All Star. to this day he has PROVED very little in the NHL aside from the fact he can turn the puck over more than any other puck-handling goalie in NHL history. and he leaves the crease way too much. do not get me started. again tho i reiterate, i hope for the best with DP but am more than prepared for the worst.
Lets go Islanders!
-
1-0 tampa. Rolie arguing
-
that was an ugly one
-
Refs give em a goal, but hey I guess we play better down 1-0 than up anyways
-
CB- Just to update you more on why Rolie was arguing that-
He had it coverd for about 2-3 seconds and a tampa bay player took a few wacks at it. But, they called it a goal. -
1-0 Tampa on a questionable goal 2 mins in that Rollo had covered up and Malone whacked out and into the net.
Guess I’d rather see the Isles start slow and end fast than the other way around! -
with all the quick whistles we’d had when we’ve been on offense, what in the world was that?
worst call I’ve seen in a while…clearly covered. That just gave both teams the word that it’s open season on digging for the puck tonight.
-
Hey CB
How come IPB is not listed on the Blogroll on the New Look Fanhouse? -
Can we get a darn shot to the net? How many pucks are going to hit their defensemen tonight?
-
Hunter hits the post. Other than that, not much happening for either team.
Picture is blurry. I can’t read the time.
-
Wow tampas top two lines are talented. Stamkos has wheels
-
PP Isles, interference. Didn’t see who. I need a bigger TV.
-
Petrov has stated that he wants to play in the US and right now he is playing in the Juniors I’m not sure what Russia would be losing by letting him come over early. One or two years of 5-10 minutes of hockey from a developing player?
If they do some deal its all to show that they have some power. -
5 on 3 for Isles
-
5 on 3 isles
-
cracked glass, helps us big time. Now the number one pp unit gets a nice rest!
-
hunter has a rip
-
Viktor Hedman looks psychotic. No offense to him, of course. Was that really his best head shot? And what abpout Rolo? Sheesh, they could’ve taken one more shot of him. I laugh every time I see it, though. While I’m grimacing, lol.
-
Can Gordon put another d-man on the power play? Kyle and now Tamby do not have the shots to play there. ISn’t Jack Hillen supposed to be an offensive d-man? Put him on the point with Streit. Or how about putting bruno so that we have a right handed shot out there? That way other teams can’t focus solely on streit.
-
Ugh 2-0 Lightning
-
Why do we refuse to shoot the puck. 5 on 3 pp and maybe one shot on goal. Brutal
-
baily must shoot more
-
Bailey had a good opportunity to score and waited too long and got stripped. I like Bailey though, so I’m going with he just needs more time. Anyway, how many times have we seen that happen. A fewwww
-
why the hell did bailey pass back instead of shoot the frickin puck @ the end of the 3rd? not looking good tonight boys, can’t think of a good thing to say about 1st period.
-
Islanders are 2 for 32 on the power play the last nine games including tonight. I guess Weight would help but they need some major work in that area.
-
Its not that bad yet. The refs gave the lightning a freebie, and the isles wasted a 5-3. Other than that, they showed some good energy and can easily win this one.
-
CB, not sure if anyone got this, I just got back in the door and saw this on replay. Reoccuring theme of the past MANY years, Isles defense too small and too timid, Hillen badly outmuscled by Downie on a goal.
Jackman with the win in his fight.
Wonder if Logie told Strang to eat at Bern’s while in Tampa?
-
ok-post-oh!
-
the last two chances they just gave are getting bad NOW!
-
where can I watch this online?
-
I just missed about 10 mins with company. What was going on with MacDonald?
-
the refs tonight are just terrible. Roloson is getting run almost every opportunity and no penalties called for it.
-
Isles lost this game b/c of a porous power play.
-
I don’t know Jay, its not listed on adthe
-
Great, Okposo finally nets one and they call it no goal.
-
End of 2nd, 2-0 TB. I haven’t seen anyone stand out on the Isles. Witt 2 penalties. Actually, haven’t even noticed Gervais, so maybe that’s a good thing.
What else can we let CB know about the game? He wants us to let him know how it goes, can one of you guys give some analysis? -
refs made the right call waiving off the isles goal, it was a hand pass. I’m just steamed about the late whistles at the other end
-
Actually, not a terrible effort so far by the Isles except for a dismal power play. They are skating well and creating some offense but haven’t gotten to any rebounds. That early goal should’ve been blown dead, I don’t understand what the ref was doing.
-
last post by me for the night, but the reason the isles aren’t in this is the power play. For a while now we just don’t seem to show any urgency on the powerplay, have trouble attacking the line with speed and keep making bad passes into the middle of the box when the defenders are all in position. Needs a lot of work.
-
Yea this game should only be 1-0, and 1-0 is much different than 2-0
Isles are working hard, TB is doing a great job of defensive positioning and winning battles. Just one of those frustrating nights so far, but TB definitely got a break on their 1st goal.
-
i cant take the guys calling the game on the center ice feed, they are insane!!!! is it me?????
-
cb in laviolettes debut the flyers and emery are getting waxed 8-2. if emerys slide continues do you think philly would be desperate enough to do biron and a prospect(ness) for giroux.
-
no, the tampa commentators are flat out aweful. it makes it hard to watch a game that is already pretty difficult to watch if yor an Isles fan
-
The powerplay is such a disgrace. The players look dead out there, and Mark Streit is so slow to carry it through the neutral zone. Instead of looking for these finesse plays getting in the zone, the Isles simply need to dump and crash the zone that way they have time to spread it out and take decent shots. Right now the Islanders players are so close together when they get lucky enough to get into the zone, that they can’t get any shots through. I don’t know what this coaching staff is doing because the past 40 power plays have looked almost identical. Hello? Will someone wake up and realize that the slow moving neutral zone play is just not working?
-
i cant take it !!!!
the chief is the worst color guy in the league, by far!!!!! what a HOMER!!! -
homer? he’s an idiot. I think he’s drunk.
-
you hit the nail on the head jim, i was thinking the same thing..they got to show streit some video, tooo slow.
-
Agree with the comments on thecommentators for TB, they stink. I remember the good ol’ days when they at least had Erin Andrews to look at during the game. She was horrible then as a on camera personality but at least she was something to look at.
-
homer is a guy who is one-sided for his own team!!
-
There ya go, special teams. 3-0 TB
-
Isles are going to get shut out by Mike Smith and the flippin’ Lightning. What a joke.
-
Another goal by Isles (GERVAIS!) waived off!!???!!
-
If you haven’t already, take a look at Park and Witt’s plus-minus. And Witt just takes a ridiculous number of penalties.

So, yes the Isles powerplay has been brutal. However, 2 disallowed goals, the latest one an absolute joke, 2 posts, and a horse… goal for Tampa to start the game.
This has been by far the most frustrating game to watch all year.
-
V. Hedman’s 1st NHL goal, courtesy of the New York Islanders.
-
Hedman gets his first NHL goal……joke game guys.
-
Isles clearly not a playoff team. Should they make the playoffs they’ll get embarrassed, even with an addition or two.
Snow would be wise to play for higher draft positioning and the team would be a playoff team next year.
What would it take to make it worth while for the Isles to be a playoff team and miss out on a Hall/Fowler type player?
Top notch big 4th line center in the mold of Gusdtad.
Super talented, do anything it takes to win winger (preferably a LW).
Petrov to Bridge/maybe the Isles would be a bonus.
At least 2 big mean/tough/skilled d-men, like Seabrook, Bieksa, O’Bryne, Weber (just giving examples not saying them). Really they need 3.
A healthy DP and Rolo.
If Snow cannot do at least the above then be smart take the high draft pick and the team will be more then ready next year with the guys having more experience, FA, and another high pick and hopefully a few smart trades. Especially if guys like Petrov, Joensuu, Reichelcz, Martin, DeHaan, and Harmonic can contribute.

I’m not saying the score.
-
The Isles don’t deserve to be down 4-0. It’s not that bad. The defense pinched down 3 goals. The power play has been brutal, but besides that I think the Isles got more snake bit than anything tonight.
-
Oh well. At least bridgeport won.
-
This game was really 3-1, not 4-0. Fake shutout, homejobbed by these refs letting the Lightning interfere all night, but despite all that BS the Lightning still deserved to win this one.
-
This game was awful!!! No flow and awfully boring!!
Props to McD for standing up to Downie and poor KO he can’t catch a break!
-
Maybe we can give Rob Schremp a real chance to make an impact on this squad. He has played in 2 games since October 22.Park is now -14,Frans Nielsen has clearly struggled[maybe he still is suffering from the upper body injury he incurred.
-
what an embarassment. youd think after that first BS goal that the refs allowed AFTER Rolo covered the puck, the team would come out and really try to support Rolo. but nooo. this was just a sad effort or a great lack of. what the heck happened??? if i was Gordon the next practice would be in their bare feet. and to think i almost drove from ft myers to see this live. hey theres the good news!
-
Witt is tough to watch. I’ll fall of my couch if he does something other than a soft dumps-in into the near corner.
It’s a turnover every time.
Float it onto the NET… Just ONCE… Just to see what happens!!!
DOC
-
Please release Witt!! I can’t take it anymore.
-
Roloson did everything humanly possible to keep us in this game. He is the best Islander so far.
-
Gordon needs to try the fourth line on the Power Play, at least they can keep the puck in the offensive zone. The Power Play Units are just not getting the job done.
-
two disallowed goals for the isles tonight while TB’s first goal was extremely controversial and after that they were allowed to scrum up after whistles and jam the front of the net all night. crazy how downie was allowed to go after islanders all night like okposo and mcdonald. islanders could of been in the game if they had a powerplay. okposo is not a good fit on the point if we do not have a d man to do it make a trade for one!
-
Doc. I was thinking the same thing with witter. U figure he would have the dump in down by now but its always a too hard or too soft turnover. What happened to streit? He is a different player. And I am on board with schrempf. Give him a shot.
Lots of tough bounces tonite.
The score didn’t tell the game or effort. -
A healthy DP is essential for Isles future – Strummer you’re dead on. IMO, Garth is doing a great job – ton of confidence in him. I just hope Wang doesn’t interfere. Let’s get the Russian here, let’s get DP healthy and let’s make some moves for our D.
-
Once our best player, Okposo, gets a goal, hopefully it will open up the flood gates!
-
On OK’s disallowed goal the ref’s saw JT touch the puck with his hand and assumed it was a hand pass so they disallowed the goal. KO said and the replay shows that the puck hit a Tampa Bay stick after JT touched it and the goal should have been allowed. I know the Isles power play was awful but the ref’s were WORSE!! KO can’t buy a break but the Isles are playing with grit and determination. GO ISLES!! I think that it’s gonna be a fun season!
-
who is that ref to waive goal off. he ruined the game with the first goal. Even Malone in interview after first period said he was surprised the ref did not blow whistle. I thought isle played great in 1st period. I think Smith was very lucky. A few of his saves were just absolute luck.
Oh well. can win the them all.
-
Didn’t see much of the game but seems like much of the same. Frans getting way too much ice time. I have stated it before it’s time for Schremp to get a chance. I’m not saying to bench Frans but something has to be done. I don’t know if this had happened but Tambellini NEEDS 1st team PP time not Frans!

Unfortunately for Chris, he left the Islanders at a time when he might have actually been a nice fit. He was blossoming well on the island into a serviceable number 3-4 defenseman with offensive upside, and he chose to head elsewhere to try and prove something. Unfortunately for him, he is learning that maybe he isn’t as good as he thought he was, and maybe the island wasn’t so bad after all. The fact that Snow was able to reel in a first round pick for him does truly deserve credit. Now, it’s all up to Calvin de Haan to prove that he is a true number 2 defenseman.
