ISLANDERS RECALL JESSE JOENSUU
6-4 Finnish wing to join NYI at practice on Friday
9:30 pm - As I posted on Twitter a few minutes ago, the Islanders have recalled Jesse Joensuu from Bridgeport of the AHL. Joensuu will practice on LI on Friday. In our ratings last month of the top prospects playing in Bridgeport, we ranked Joensuu No. 2. The 6-4 wing from Finland is 5-11-16 in 28 games this season with the Sound Tigers, but he has stepped up his play over the last three weeks. It will be back to the press box for someone. Perhaps Scott Gordon made a request for some size.

CB, whose spot he taking? Comeau? Schremp? Someone else? He’s certainly not been called up to be a healthy scratch…
-
Trade coming? I read we have scouts at the NSH game tonight…NSH has a good young defense
-
i was at the game last yr when jesse got his first goal and i really like the kid. Hope he does well i certainly think he’s got all the tools to be a solid player at this level and man could we ever use the boost.
-
Happy hes up but we need toughness.
-
seems like we have a glut of forwards-maybe an audition for trading one of the veterans for a dman ?
-
Rocky-CB doesnt count as a scout.
-
really like him. like his game. hope he gets plenty of ice time with guys on the 2nd line and PP. A lot of guys who deserve to sit. Hope he’s here to stay!
-
i like jesse quite a bit as well. i could see him playing on our 2nd or 3rd line for a long time. wonder who sits or if a trade is coming. i’m excited to see jesse up here. finally some size on this team!
-
All the best for big JJ
-
I wonder if they’re showcasing him with an eye for a deal for a d-man
-
Big left wing…just what we need.
-
Lets see if he’s learned how to use his size a bit more
-
He is on pace for a 12 goal season in the AHL. Can’t imagine what he can do for the Islanders when he couldnt even beat AHL defensmen or AHL goalies.
-
I like it.
-
I really like Joensuu. Hopefully next year he is a full time player on this team. He can have Sim’s spot.
-
If Bailey is going to play less than 9 minutes, then I think it’s time to get him to Bridgeport and let him develop a little more.
-
Not excactly the type of size we need. It’s not like Tavares doesn’t have 25 other teeth.
Hopefully JJ will play with Bailey, so FINALLY he will have a linemate to play with. Sim & Tamby have done nothing offensive. Bailey still has better numbers than Frans. Though Bailey is learning how to be stronger in the defensive zone. -
If this is about a trade then my instinct is that Comeau oughta have his bags packed and ready… there was some Campoli in that guy for sure
-
Like the move, Jesse has the size we need and nice raw talent. Hope he does well! Move someone else we need size/talent on this team.
-
Hey #14 easton…how are okposo’s goal totals looking? Yet he still makes an impact?
-
Gordon seemed pretty angry with Tambellini after he was clerly to the puck before the Toronto defenseman but did not touch the puck to negate the icing because he did not want to get hit. What happened 51 seconds later? Jason Blake scored.
-
Hope he’s ready, I like him too but while improved recently he has had a rough season.
-
Like what I’ve seen so far. Hope this isn’t a showcase before a trade.
-
Seth #22-I think you are right on. He was pi$$ed off at tambs. And for good reason, this is the NHL son, you are going to take hits. I’m going to catch holy hell for this, but Tambs and Comeau can go for a vet or some high prospects (assuming we could get that for them, which I doubt). Neither guy has shown me much. Oh and take Sim. That guy is useless. It hurts my head to watch him play.
-
Tambs and Comeau for a vet or high prospects? We couldn’t get a bag of pucks for those two at this point. Unless there’s a team out there who is looking for a shootout specialist…in all seriousness though, Tambs hasn’t played that badly recently. I’ve kept a close eye on him, and he’s always skating hard, and has been relatively responsible in the defensive zone. He also happens to be 3rd on the team in goals.
-
Some where on LI Josh Bailey is calling “dibs” on JJ. Sit Sim, Tambs, Schremp or Comeau or all 4. Wish Reichlecz and Martin were also brought up.
Happy they did this. Make some deals.
-
2nd line… Tambs-JB-Hunter. Give it about 5-8 games. See what happens.
-
It’s time for Tambellini to go. He’s like Robert Deniro’s character in “Awakenings” who starts out comatose, wakes up for a short period, and then returns to being comatose. Enough already.
As for Comeau, blehhhh. Little to no impact. Barely hits anymore. Whatever it is – doesn’t fit system? doesn’t get along with coach? just not good enough to play a regular shift in NHL? – it’s obvious it just isn’t working here.
-
I really liked this kid last year. He looked great vs. the Rangers late in the season. He has size and talent. He’ll be ready to go; he won’t sleep the next two nights – he’ll be pumped
I’d like to see him on a line with Baily and Hunter…
-
I think the coaching staff has has been unfair to Comeau. I think hes a 3rd liner that can check. He has to shoot more because he has a good shot. Its ridiculous he has not been in the lineup for Sim. I would have rather sat sim and played comeau. What can you even get for Comeau right now? With that said I really like Joensuu and im surprised he has not put up better numbers at bport. I like this kid! I am rooting hard for him. I hope he can be a good 2nd liner in this league and not an inconsistant player. Lets GO JJ!!
-
Honestly, I can see Tambellini being useful on another NHL team. The guy can skate and shoot, for whatever reason, it’s just not working for him here. He would probably do well on a team like Pittsburgh, where the main guys are already in place. There are some players who just aren’t meant to play on certain teams, and this kind of team just isn’t working out for him. If he gets traded and booms, that’s just the way it goes. He must have some sort of value right now, even if it is a 3rd round or lower pick, might want to consider it.
-
We need size but we also need the guy with size to be tough and a good fighter. This team lacks an in your face type player. Guys fight Thompson and Jackman so they can chalk up a win in their fight stats. They laugh at these guys. Get us some real toughness!!!!!
-
Its not just size we need. We need toughness as well if not more than size. Its fine to have a small speedy based team, but you really need TOUGHNESS and GRIT just as much as anything. This team is in the cream puff category lately and its showing in the W-L dept.
-
You know, I read this blog daily, but don’t feel the need to comment. But, its amazing how everyone here bash’s sim, but he really is one of two, other being Thompson, forwards that actually play with Grit. Sim always gets to the front of the net and is always taking hits and cross checks to get penalties. I’m not saying he’s a great player, but hes not exactly useless. I actually appreciate his effort and I wish that it would rub off on some of these younger players. Anyways, I believe Schremp and Tamb’s time is done. How much ice time can you give schremp before you even see a glance of offensive ability. I don’t see us getting good trade value for each, and in fact I really don’t see us getting much trade value for anyone on our roster (besides the untouchables). I’d be surprised to see us make an impact move without giving up picks.
-
I’m glad JJ is up. I’d sit Sim and keep Tamby and Schremp in the lineup (but NOT on the 4th line). We can’t keep relying on JT and Moulson to score all of our goals and at least they bring skill and scoring ability to the line-up.
Moulson-Bailey-JT
KO-Schremp-Hunter
Tamby-Frans-JJ
Thompson-Park-Comeau (unless Jackman is ready)My lines might seem a bit radical but hey that’s why they don’t pay me the big bucks. LOL
-
I agree with #32. Tambellini should do much better with the different squad.
I hope they won’t trade JJ.
It is good to have him with the big club -
I hope we get a Dman. As far as im concerned. Anyone other than KO, JT, JB, Bergie, Streit, Nielsen, Moulson or Hunter is expendable.
Jonseau did well last time he came up. He should be pretty eager to play hard saturday.
Tambellini is floating around too much and not driving to net.
I dont get you guys bashing Josh. he is still a great player and only going to get better. You cant look good when you got Sim on your line. He is horrible. Move josh to second line.
-
Well it will be good to see some grit and hopefully the pairing of him and Bailey can help produce something on a line because no one else can find the net other than Molson and Tavares.
-
Maybe the time has finally come and Sim will get waived – I am one of the biggest critics of Sim, but he has hustled a LITTLE (key word) bit more this year – but it is time to move on.
PS: anyone know if Billy Jaffe will be back next year, I think this is the last year of his inital contract with MSG/NYI – I might be wrong, but nothing has been said. He has good chemistry with Howie Rose
-
Well hopefully they pair him with Bailey, and Gordo gives Bailey more time.
I posted this in another thread, and I will post it here: I am going to the game on Saturday, anyone else want to join me in a “We Want Bailey” chant. As it is more important to get Bailey ice time and let him learn from his mistakes and grow, then it is for the Isles to get the 8th or dare say 7th spot in the playoffs and get toaste by Washington/Pittsburgh.
-
Frankly, I don’t want the Isles to get toasted by Washington, Pittsburgh, or New Jersey (should they catch the Penguins). I want them either to hit the lottery and snare a top-five pick again, or sneak into sixth and take on whatever weak-sister third seed the Northeast tosses at us. Getting smoked like a Christmas ham in the first round and sitting with a 12th-16th pick isn’t a long-term formula for success, not when the prospect pool is already shallow.
Even optimizing what they currently have, it’s obvious this isn’t a contending team… yet. Moulson-JT-KO is a solid first line, and will only improve. We need a second line to complement them; Bailey centering Hunter and Tambs (or Weight when he returns) is merely eh, and JJ is not ready for a spot next to them (and would make it one of the slowest-skating lines, to boot). JJ on a third line with Franz and Comeau looks all right, and the Isles have eleven fourth-liners right now so, there you go. That is clearly not good enough – it’s merely the best that can be done for now, and it’s better than last season but not going to cut it.
The Isles are clearly saving up to be one of the few teams with cap room next season, so we can grab a front-line guy or two and really make a serious run. That’s the correct move. It also means a better shot to re-sign KO, Tavares, Bailey, et als, because they will see the progress and the team will have some space to keep them around. Weight, Biron, and porbably Comeau or Franz will be traded for defensive help and a pick or two, and then next season they’ll probably see if Hamonic or Ness are ready to help, sign a guy or two, and really start making people nervous.
-
Joensuu isn’t really a banger and is a bad fighter but isnt afraid to mix it up and should help with toughness…google to see what he did to Ross after he collided with Bentivoglio behind the play.
-
PLAY COMEAU!!
-
Mike in VA:
I agree with you on the need for grit in the lineup. Sim does have value getting in opponents faces and doing the gritty work on the boards and front of the net. However, in a more ideal situation, more of the team would be doing this and we wouldn’t have to rely on Sim. What gets to me about him is his apparent loss of offensive touch. I remember him having better hands but this year it seems he losses the puck the minute it gets on his stick. No where is that more prevalent then the power play. I think the team needs to step up the grit and a more offensive talent needs to take Sim’s spot. Happily it looks like Moulson has no fear of the front of the net and JT is starting to carve out a back door niche.
-
sim trys, but always gets knocked off the puck, he is way to small for the way he trys to play. same with meyer, to small to play as a starter, trade them both for a defenseman, doesnt have to score, just able to clear the crease, and battle in the corners
-
its about time dang nabbit!
-
Sim is the king of face rubs, guys dont respond to him getting in their face because its a joke. He scares NO ONE and they know he will not respond with a fight. Jackman people call a middleweight but the fact is he is a BAD heavywight his size puts him in the heavy category and he NEVER fights guys as BIG as him. Thompson is nothing as well, this guy NEVER challenges guys like Asham, Carcillo all guys similar size he only takes on guys that dont really fight and barley beats them. We have NO toughness, its a joke what the Isles are trying to sell as toughness and im just not buying it. How do you play Philly and Toronto back to back and register no fights? NHL has succeded in killing all rivalries, this had does not compare to the Isles Toronto playoff series a few years back, that is how the NHL should look to go for great fast in your face hockey instead of this lull you to sleep style we see going on now.
-
If we have scouts at Nashville, I’m hoping for (really Shea Weber) but realistically Jordin Tootoo. Skates, hits, agitates and fights (very well) with a wee bit of offense mixed in.
-
smith is far and away the most nhl-ready forward in bridgeport – this should be his call-up and his real chance to oust the likes of awful forwards like sim, tambellini and schremp.

interesting-I thought most scouts thought he needed more seasoning.
