LAVIOLETTE RETURNS TO THE DIVISION
Flyers name former NYI coach as their man

by Chris Botta on December 4th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Congrats to good friend Peter Laviolette, the new coach of the Flyers. While he may not be classic Flyers Family material, Pete will no doubt work his magic in Philadelphia just like he did in leading Carolina to the Stanley Cup and the Islanders to their first playoff berth in eight seasons. NYI at Philly on Tuesday.

congrats to peter. i knew that he would be back in the nhl soon. always like lavy. we never should have fired him.

  2. avatar Staten Islander says:

Amen Bergie. Firing him was ANOTHER Milbury screw up.

  3. avatar tool123 says:

still to this day, still dont know why he was let go by teh Isles?

  4. avatar Eastonhockey says:

Isles thought they were better then him. Like they thought they were better then yashin. Who knew they’d likely have to wait 5-7 years for another season where they make playoffs n lose in round 1. Ah the good old days.

  5. avatar hextall72 says:

Hopefully he’ll put a spark under scott hartnell for the sake of my fantasy team

  6. avatar Brian says:

Big Laviolette fan, good luck to him, I still wish it worked out better here.

  7. avatar Swan says:

Lavy was my favorite Isles coach, other than Arbour. Ugh, hate the Flyers but will always be rooting for Laviolette.

Hopefully, something will fall through the Flyers hire Keenan, Melrose instead.

  8. avatar OlTimeHockey says:

yea, why was Lavy fired from here?

Chris can you fill in the uninformed like myself?

  9. avatar rob76 says:

Congrats to Peter – too bad he couldn’t land a job in the Western Conference so we didnt have to play him all the time

  10. avatar fred says:

#8 If I remember, Lavvy was fired because his players went to Milbury and Wang and complained about his style. I beleive his players got him fired. Am I close??

  11. avatar Dorfer81 says:

I won’t enjoy rooting against Laviolette. But, it’s still Philly and I shall do what I must.

  12. avatar Ed Flanagan (Hoser14) says:

WOW! I agree that Lavy should have never been fired in the first place. At least he not coaching the foul Ranger$!

Does that mean that Flash Gordon has the most current seniority among the Atlantic Divison coaches.

Flash Gordon for 2010 Adams Trophy!

  13. avatar Lance79 says:

Interesting – Gordon is now the only coach in the division without a cup ring.

  14. avatar beatlebailey says:

We have a good coach so no looking back here. What is done is done. Congrats to Lavy.

  15. avatar Eastonhockey says:

Isles couldn’t afford lacy anyway at this point. We pay minimum wage for coaches. If Gordon ever won some playoff rounds n earned a raise he would have to get it from another team

  16. avatar Chris A says:

Congrats to Peter but I think he’s filling a vacancy that shouldn’t have been created Stevens turned them around and due to some bad breaks he’s gone

  17. avatar Jason says:

I love Peter Laviolette. He’s a great coach and was a great analyst. But some things are smaller than the game. As much as he did a good job here, and as great an analyst as he was, I CAN NOT root for the Flyers… or any Philadelphia sports team. I don’t care if my brother or dad was hired by the Flyers, I’d still root against them. I actually might hate the Flyers MORE than I hate the Rangers.

Pete, you’re a good man, but sorry dude, I can’t back the Flyers.

  18. avatar Jason says:

#13, Tortarella SHOULD NOT have a ring. Martin Gelinas scored a goal in Game 6 in 2004 that WAS NOT reviewed. Flames should have beaten Tampa in 6 in 2004… but you’re right, unfortunately.

#4 the Islanders cutting loose of Yashin who was holding the franchise back was a great move. Yashin made no team better excpet for the 01-02 season where he actually played like an all-star. He went down for 3 months in 03-04 and the team played better without him. Blake was the heart of that team. He had so much more heart than Yashin. Then Yashin played well for the first 6 weeks under Nolan then went invisible for times. I have not missed Yashin one bit. #17 calgary outplayed Tampa in that series except for game 7. I remember they lost game 6 in ot but what part of the game was that gelinas goal? Calgary and edmonton really lost 2 back to back hearbreaking finals that really could have gone either way. Both teams had to play game 7 on the road and that was the difference. However, calgary outplayed tampa for the first 6 games of that series and should have rapped it up at home in 6, but Khabibulin had an amazing playoff and the only reason he did not win the conn smyth was being Brad Richards took over the finals to even give tampa a chance in a 6th game!

  20. avatar beatlebailey says:

as far a Flyers hate is concerned I agree..i hate flyers fans more than rangers fans…they are the worst!!

  21. avatar orgaNYIzation says:

Yes, Fred (#10) – the Isles players revolted against Lavy. Rather than let go of half the team, Milbury chose to let Lavy go. Too bad, he was a good coach from a fan’s point of view.

  22. avatar Ajax says:

looking back on things, my guess is that Yashin had something to do with Lavy getting canned, he had the contract, Lavy was outspoken on his soft playing … just my opinion. Best of luck Lavy!

  23. avatar Lance79 says:

#18 It may be just trivia in the end; besides Lemaire’s last cup was in 95 – a different era. Lavvy’s coaching pedigree is well-established between his success here and of course his cup with Carolina- now he’ll have way more (on paper anyway) to work with in Philly. Good luck Peter (except for next week of course).

  24. avatar JPinVA says:

I really enjoyed watching the Isles when Lavy was the coach. I always assumed that Yashin and DP lobbied for a trapping style because DP wanted to be the next Marty, and Yashin was used to it. Maybe CB could shed some light on that.
All in all, though (and I can’t believe I’m saying this), I’m glad the Isles went with and are sticking with Gordon.
Especially now that it appears that the team, or he, is starting to get it. I think a lot of their success can be attributed to the return and play of Hunter(I’m surprised CB hasn’t posted something about his play) and Nielsen. But it also looks like they have been able to shift the pressure from the offensive zone forecheck to the nuetral zone when appropriate. That is something we didn’t really see in the first 90+ games of the Gordon administration.
Lat’s hope this continues, and we get some needed help when Weight and Sutton return (and maybe some blue line help at the deadline).
PS:I’m a big fan of nannies, so don’t bring back Sopel.

  25. avatar kingbet123 says:

I dislike the Flyers more than the Rangers but the Flyers are getting a super coach. Lavy did a good job when he was here not to mention that he is a heck of a nice guy.

  26. avatar Eric says:

How do you dislike the flyers more than the ranger$?

  27. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Good for Lavy … bad for the rest of the division… I think maybe the Devils and Pens are safe … but Lavy does seem to have that midas touch.

  28. avatar Irish Isle says:

I thought the firing involved Peca more than Yashin
