RECCHI’S CHOICE FOR WINTER CLASSIC: NYI-NYR
Also: Calvin de Haan out for USA-Canada

by Chris Botta on December 31st, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Could there be the first Winter Classic fight?

FanHouse: First Impressions of Fenway Park

2:20 pm, Boston - In the locker room of the Boston Red Sox, future Hall of Famer Mark Recchi was asked, not by me, for his selection for next year’s NHL Winter Classic. “Somewhere in New York,” said the 41-year-old Bruin. “It has to be Islanders against the Rangers. It has to be the rivals.” In other news, Islanders prospect Calvin de Haan will miss tonight’s USA-Canada showdown at the WJC with an upper body injury that is believed to be a concussion.

Would be great, but I doubt the NHL will let it happen.

  2. avatar RichM says:

No chance NBC televises the Islanders.

  3. avatar Blizzard says:

…best rivalry in NY sports. Hands down. It will happen IMO.

  4. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

slim to none unless they do a doubleheader or something. I don’t know if the ice can even hold up for two 60+ minute games. i love those words though. Mark Recchi, I have even more respect for you now.

  5. avatar Examiner says:

From his mouth to NBC executives’ ears.

The winter classic better not be rained out tomorrow. Looks like I won’t get the opportunity to see those bowl games on FOX, so postponing that hockey game would really put a damper on my New Year’s Day.

  6. avatar Tony says:

    Look at it honestly/realistically:
    1. The Isles/Rangers rivalry is not what it used to be.
    2. No one outside of NY would care or watch an Islanders/Rangers winter classic game.
    3. NHL fans might be interested in a game played at Yankee Stadium, but the Rangers would have to be the team representing NY.

  7. avatar kevin27nyi says:

    mark recchi is the man!!

  8. avatar MJS says:

Thanks for putting that up. Islanders Nation surely will get a kick out of it. Too bad that the Isles don’t garner enough exposure to warrant being put on Versus more than twice this season, so there’s little chance of an Isles vs. Rags rivalry game for the Winter Classic next year. That is even though it would be simple to play up the New York vs. New York element like they do with Mets vs. Yankees games.

  9. avatar campion101 says:

    Just became a Recchi fan!
Unfortunately Bob Costas was on the Today show this morning saying that maybe next year it will be at Yankee Stadium “hosted by the Rangers.”

  10. avatar What says:

versus owned by comcast, owns flyers.. hmm no special treatment there with philyl being on versus seemingly EVERY WEEK.. i guess the nhl forgot the cba is suppsoed to allow SMALL MARKET TEAMS to make money.. not increase the large market team’s pockt book.. start airign OTHER TEAMS and maybe more ppl will watch.. but how cna you expect ratigns to go up when you air the same teams every week.. especially when that said team has had a crap season.. stop feeding the big markets and stat letting the little guys in if you are really serious about having a salary cap… stop feeding the big markets all teh national tv air time..

  11. avatar Seth says:

I am all for the Rangers playing at Yankee stadium (even if the Islanders are not involved) but I do NOT want the devils involved. I could live with Montreal/New York Rangers.

  12. avatar Glenn says:

The Larry Brooks article posted by CB a few months ago had it right. The Islanders NEED the kind of exposure provided by a Winter Classic game. How can the NHL not realize that? MJS has it right – if the media hypes the played out NYY\NYM “rivalry” to no end, which it does, why not NYI\NYR two teams who are division rivals, not backpage rivals?
Quite honestly, if it’s Rangers hosting and the Isles aren’t involved, I might boycott.

  13. avatar Mario says:

Seth, why would you want the Rags involved without the Isles. Thats there best rivalry.

  14. avatar felix says:

concussion to de haan can not be good

  15. avatar Seth says:

Mario, having a game at Yankee Stadium would be cool. I wouldn’t say I would love the Rangers to be involved in a game without the Islanders but if the Islanders weren’t involved, an original 6 would be a good idea.

  16. avatar pete says:

    Islanders @ Rangers Yankee Stadium
Sharks @ Wild Twins or Vikings stadium

  17. avatar JPinVA says:

They probably should wait until they both come off of winning a playoff series. then they can play in the Islanders new home… Prospect Park.

  18. avatar uconn husky says:

it cant be at yankee stadium because they will be having a bowl game there for the next 3 years… if they do it they might have to do it at citi field or the new giants stadium

  19. avatar CP says:

Pete the twins/vikings play indoors…not much of a classic game there. Itll prob be a Rags/Habs game at Yankee Stadium next year, unless Notre Dame has their bowl game there that theyve also been hyping up.

  20. avatar Jim says:

I don’t see an NHL game at Yankee Stadium any time soon. Starting next year, 2010, the Yankees have agreed to host Army/Notre Dame football on 11/20 and then a Bowl game between the Big East and the Big 12 Conferences, sometime in mid, to late Decemeber. Don’t think the NHL could get ice surface up, running, and perfect for a 1/1/11 game.

  21. avatar Daniel says:

Islanders vs Rangers would be the best matchup of all time at either Yankee Stadium or Citi Field

  22. avatar Mike says:

Best idea i’ve heard was Stars vs. Wild in Minnesota. Stars wear the old Northstar’s uniforms.

  23. avatar mtrico says:

#17 The Minnesota Twins go outdoors beginning in 2010.

  24. avatar Jeff says:

How about Islanders Rangers at Citi Field, better off. The battle of LIRR. CItifield would be a friendlier place for Islanders fans opposed to Yankees Stadium. Bronx Westchester is Rangers territory, Islanders better represented at Cici Field althoug h it probably would be more Rnagers fans anyway. Just saying Islanders better represented at Citi Field!

  25. avatar me says:

Guys and gals. NBC is not going to televise a game between the Rangers and Islanders when the Islanders are in the state they are in. If the Islanders are a strong and viable team again then maybe [most likely a long shot] but maybe then the NHL puts them on NBC for the Winter Classic. It stinks but it’s the truth and reality for us Islander fans is this.

  26. avatar Andrew T says:

CP, the Twins will be moving to Target Field (a new outdoor stadium) for the 2010 season, so a 2011 Winter Classic in Minnesota could be possible. If that does happen, I sort of like the idea of the Stars going North to play the Wild.

  27. avatar Lord Al says:

As of last week it was said that it’s the Caps vs Rangers . This week the talk started up that the game could be held in Central Park … This came from somebody in NBC. The NHL I think would realy push for this .It would be a takeoff of the KHL all star game it.

  28. avatar beatlebailey says:

should be a double header as suggested before..put rags vs capitals and then isles/devils…fans of all 3 local teams in the same place at the same time..can yankee stadium survive it? :-)

  29. avatar moose says:

Double header at the new meadowlands isles/rags then devils /caps.

  30. avatar FourCupsin4yearsnot60 says:

Funny, the most important part of CBs article is that De Haan is concussed, but no one is talking about it here. Isn’t that his 2nd one this year. I could be wrong but didn’t he get one trying to check Kassian earlier in the season? If so, 2 concussions in one season can be a very bad sign.

  31. avatar miket239 says:

Until it happens I can only imagine an Isles/Rangers outdoor game. If you deny it would be sensational then youre delusional.

    HAPPY 2010 ISLES FANS!
HAPPY 2010 MR BOTTA, THE WORK YOU PUT INTO THIS SITE IS IMMENSELY APPRECIATED! THANK YOU.

  32. avatar Jim Clark says:

A concussion for an Islander farmhand that we traded five draft picks to select. Why am I not surprised? Typical Wang obscuration calling it an upper-body injury. Gimme some truth.

Recchi is better acting in movies than he is in predicting what NBC will tell Bettman what to do. They don’t want two New York teams. Everyone remembers what losuy ratings the 2000 World Series had outside the tri-state area.

  33. avatar TimQ says:

Now I’ve seen it all. The canadian junior coaching staff referring to de Haan’s upper body injury is a ‘Wang obscuration’. It’s an international conspiracy I tell you.

    Priceless!

  34. avatar Lord Al says:

Next year the talk is that there will be two games . The Rangers vs the Caps and the night game Van vs Leafs in BC or Montreal vs the Sens in Ott. This way you’ll have a NBC game and a CBC game

  35. avatar DingoAteYoBaby says:

28/29 – Double header for sure, but have one game at Yankee and the other at Citi Field. Any mixture of those four Isles/Rags/Devils/Caps would work…Figure if they won’t do Isles vs Rags in NY, might as well get both going in different games.

  36. avatar admin says:

Folks: as many have stated already, Yankee Stadium is not an option. The NHL needs two weeks to prep. The Yankees did a deal for a college bowl game to be played the next five years during the week after Christmas…CB

  37. avatar RobC says:

I always liked Recchi as hockey player but this makes me like him allot more as a hockey fan…

  38. avatar Candor says:

The Islanders seem to play MUCH better when there are a few fighting majors in a game. Is that because of Jackman and his injury? Im not sure…but, the softer play is not our thing. We need grit. Happy New Year!

  39. avatar BR says:

Lord Al – Vancouver would be too risky, it’s just cold enough, even at this time of year, and lots of rain. Ottawa doesn’t have an outdoor venue that would be appropriate for this (neither does Vancouver, for that matter). If the NHL wants to do an outdoor game in Canada it should be in Edmonton (who held the first one in 2003).

  40. avatar BR says:

I meant Vancouver is just not cold enough…

  41. avatar Section 320 rocks says:

I would love Isles Rags @ Citifield then Devs Caps W/E. I would prefer Rags Isles and not Rags devils because the intensity usually isn’t there as much as is it when we play the Rangers. That is just my 2 cents Isles Rags @ Citifield and Devs Caps @ maybe the new metolands if necessary.

Yeah I just became a fan of Mark Recchi smart guy!!!

  42. avatar Lord Al says:

The game in Ott would be held in Frank Clair stadium 26,559 cap.

  43. avatar Tim F. says:

When the NHL (or really, NBC) puts the Isles in the Winter Classic, I’ll eat my Mike Bossy sweater.

  44. avatar AK says:

Central Park? Has anyone seen the makeup of the Central Park skating rink? Trees surround the rink. Where are people going to sit and watch the game there? Sure they can place seats around certain parts of the park but good luck getting 10,000 seats placed there.

  45. avatar RobC says:

If the Isles get snubbed out of the Winter Classic in NY, Next season, it would be an injustice and counter productive…Bettman doesn’t want the Isles to move so playing in the Winter Classic against their dreaded rivals the Rangers would be positive exposure to a struggling franchise…Even use it as a way to advertise the LHP…Market John Tavares and Kyle Okposo…

  46. avatar Lord Al says:

On the pre game on NHL network centreal park may be the front runner next year Bettman said that it would take major $$ to put it in the park. Now from me it may come down to the money the city of New York puts up the NHL puts up NBC puts up Macys puts up to join in with the Macys NewYeafs Day Parade

  47. avatar RobC says:

Fans are saying that nobody cares about the Isles, Rags, rivalry, so nobody will watch…LUDICROUS!!!

Its a game people will watch simply for the nostalgia, like myself…Then, after they witness these 2 teams going head to head, they’ll see what this rivalry is all about, what it brings out of these players, and the fans… Most Isles, Rags, games are intense, chippy, and they never fail to be interesting…Crazy things seem to happen in every game…I hope the NHL is fair and I can only hope they will do the “natural” thing, like Recchi said…

I beg the NHL not to screw Isles fans and the players over again like Burke did to Kyle Okposo…Bring this “rivalry” to the nation, bring this rivalry to the “Winter Classic”…Let the Isles benefit..This historic franchise, the only major pro sports team on Long Island, is “teeter toddering” on the brink of extinction…Won’t the NHL throw us a friggen bone….Its only natural for it to be an Isles, Rags game in a “Winter Classic” in NY…There is no other sensible recourse…
