NYI designing matching whites for the road

9:50 pm - As Point Blank first reported in March, the Islanders’ retro, royal blue jerseys will be their primary home jersey in 2010-2011. The team is working on a matching retro white version for road games next season.

    me likey

  2. avatar Ethan K says:

I was shocked when I heard Billy talking about that during the game. I think the jerseys are okay, but the dark blue is just classic. Not to mention the script writing on the light blue helmets are stupid.

  3. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Very good news. Any chance the NHL switches back to the whites at home? Ethan (2), I agree with you about the script on the helmets. Other than that I am totally OK with the home blues.

  4. avatar Staten Islander says:

About time, can we add this as a plus to the plus/minus? i hope they get to replace the white waterwing jerseys too.

  5. avatar Frank nyc says:

Great news. I love the classic jersey’s. Looking forward to seeing the new whites. Also i dont know ifanyone else noticed but last year when they wore their 3rds, the socks had a gap between the lines around the calve muscle. Now the lines are solid.
It is funny though, everyone came out with new RBK edge jerseys.
Many teams then came out with classic thirds. Now im hearing a few teams going with their classic thirds as their primary jerseys next year.

  6. avatar Alex says:

so… does the current home jersey then become a 3rd jersey? or do they just get rid of it comletly?

  7. avatar Neil says:

Great news…and never change them again…ever.

  8. avatar Joe says:

Why do they have to change it every few years? It has an adverse effect; it makes fans not want to buy jerseys because it’s going to be changed within ~3 years.

  9. avatar Andrew says:

I’m guessing the Sound Tigers’ home jerseys are what the Isles’ road jerseys will look like next season.

  10. avatar John k says:

They should go with the unis from the 80′s, with no space in the stripes.

  11. avatar jim says:

this is great news, as long as for the whites, they are identical to the one they wore during the 80′s, the dynasty years.

  12. avatar Terry19 says:

just got a set for me and my four year old for Christmas. He’s a future winger, should make the team and play with JT in 2025.

  13. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

Love the jersey. Bought one for myself.

  14. avatar Dan says:

Is this team starting to get smart? I love the jersey and am getting one for x-mass with Okposo on it!

  15. avatar MickeyBoy7 says:

How ’bout a retro TEAM? With a retro coach and GM please.

  16. avatar justin says:

According to the people at the Islander team store, the reason that they wear dark jerseys at home is because for some reason, they have better jersey sales(all teams, not just isles). It is purely a merchandising related reason.

  17. avatar Dan says:

O and will they have a new 3rd? Maybe back to the all orange jersey? Philly has it so maybe not.

  18. avatar Avolp55turgeonfichaud says:

I am very, very happy about this news. I love the royal blue. I actually am impartial to the script writing on the helmet… however an Islanders crest on the side of it instead would look pretty awesome.

I think Bridgeport’s “home” whites are probably very similar to what the Islanders will wear on the road next year. If those are any indication, I will enjoy seeing them wear it.

Regardless of the sweater they wear.. LETS. GO. ISLANDERS.

  19. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Now I know what Jersey to buy!!

  20. avatar Brian says:

Great news, love the royal blues!

  21. avatar Brad says:

Love the royal blues! And I’d love to see the away whites switch to the classic style as well. I too, am not a fan of the script on the helmet either. Nor was I actually ever a fan of the 4 Cup stripe patch on the shoulders…reminds me of an American Airlines pilot or something.

There’s that one logo floating around the net that was designed by some guy and it had the “NY” with an anchor in the middle…I always thought it’d look awesome on a shoulder (or a hat!). But I don’t think they’d ever consider it.

  22. avatar mLem says:

it’s easy…dark jerseys don’t stain as easy as the white ones…personally I have only bought dark jerseys for that reason. If I am gonna spend $100-$300 I’d rather have something that won’t stain or yellow with use

  23. avatar Jim Clark says:

Just as long as they never bring back the “Fishsticks” in any form…..Even Gary Bettman thought they were a mistake and he thinks expansion into the Sun Belt is a good thing.

  24. avatar rb says:

@2 The script on the helmet is from the 1970s.

  25. avatar anthony c says:

I agree with post #23, I got 2 pre-rbk white islander jerseys that have begun to yellow over the years. They have gotten worse since I had them packed in storage unfortunately. Never liked the dark jerseys as the homes uniforms since I like many of you were accustomed to white at home and dark on the road. Plus I remember some people said a few years ago the year before the lockout that with teams wearing dark at home the NHL was copying the NFL since just about all NFL teams (except the cowboys most of the time) mainly wear dark at home as well. But anyway, I am happy that the Isles are gonna make their original royal blues as the main jersey next season. And like a few posts above I don’t get the scripted lettering on the helmet’s. 1st time I saw that last season made me go WTF why did they do that. Just put the logo on the helmet it will look better. And speaking of full time retro’s, I think philly is gonna make their retro jersey’s the main jersey next year since they have been wearing them a lot so far and when they got emery and pronger they wore the retro’s at their press conferences. I also got my money on edmonton making their retro jersey’s full time either next season or the following season. Maybe even calgary to but I doubt it. Toronto as well.

  26. avatar JJ says:

FYI, Until 1970, the home teams wore dark jerseys and the road team wore white. The NHL switched the jersey colors in order to bring more ‘color’ to the league. This way, fans got to see different colors each game — instead of just their team in a dark jersey and the road team in white.

With the re-introduction of third jerseys several years ago, road teams often had to travel with their whites if a home team planned to wear their third jerseys. So, the NHL switched it back to make things simpler.

Don’t expect the NHL to switch to home whites anytime soon!

  27. avatar eric says:

I told Bettman whites at home!! Just something nostalgic with seeing your team at home wearing white. The Whites have always been my favorite Islanders jersey. The WHITES next year BETTER BE identical to the vintage whites. I also dont like the laces by the neck. I like the V neck better. Make the whites next year with a V Neck but they better be idential to teh 72-95 whites or else!

  28. avatar Original Rob says:

    nice…

  29. avatar Mo says:

Originally when the move was made to wear the dark jerseys at home, the reason that was giving for the change was that because most teams 3rd jerseys were dark
,teams were forced to bring to much extra equipment on the road, when the home teams wanted to wear there alternates at home

  30. avatar Moose says:

80s and early 90s jerseys. Leave this royal blue one as the 3rd.

The true retro 70s jersey had orange letters. I wouldnt mind orange letters for the 3rd.

I always wanted to see an orange jersey in the striped format not the stars esque 3rd from acouple of years ago.

  31. avatar Blizzard says:

…..excellent!!!! I will be certainly buying the road white jersey for strict nostalgic purposes with the hopes that someday the NHL will revert back to having the whites at home.

  32. avatar puck-o says:

can someone get Ethan the definition of classic. Dark blue classic… come on. Great job NYI its about time, the oilkers should do the same.

  33. avatar stephen says:

This makes winning the Tavares jersey on Pointblank night that much sweeter. Thanks CB

  34. avatar Nick says:

Sweet jesus, amen! Lets make a giant bonfire and burn all the terrible muppet-wearing-a-wife-beater current jerseys, which were the worst thing to happen to this franchise since Mike Millbury. Cant wait to see the new, retro whites!

  35. avatar Mike for Philly says:

About time, I hate how the Islanders disregard their history by changing there jerseys way to often (wave, fisherman, rbk pajama jersey). Stick with the classics and do not steer away again. There is a reason why teams like the Habs, Bruins, Hawks, Wings, and yes even the Rags, do not change their jersey styles. Fans identify with their teams jerseys and the Islanders finally realize that!

  36. avatar Gillies Goring says:

This is a no-brainer; a fantastic move. A return to the team’s roots. I saw a post here asking for an orange alt – if you like orange jerseys, go root for the Flyers. With this return to a vintage look, I’d be happy to never see an Isles’ 3rd again. Why mess with perfection?

  37. avatar jimb says:

I love it…and they really should never change it again, when you look at the Rangers, Redwings, Blackhawks, Habs, etc…those are basically the same jerseys they have always had. No reason we can’t be like that. The retro Isles jerseys are awesome!

  38. avatar UIF says:

Huh, I kind of like the script writing on the helmets. Can’t wait to see what the whites look like. Good decision by the Isles…matching the “step in the right direction” with the goal song. For anyone at the game, how did the crowd react to the new song?

  39. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

As the saying goes, history repeats itself. Lets just hope the “new/old” jersey brings back the great moments of the past.

  40. avatar orngfan says:

the white jerseys we wear now are just throwback philadelphia flyer uniforms. the soundtigers wear the white alternates to the royal blues now and they look great SO excited to see the team nxt year can’t wait to order my white TAVARES!!

  41. avatar greg says:

Crowd loved the goal song, wasnt my initial choice, but it works really well. Really gets everybody into it.

    New jerseys ftw.

  42. avatar PowhatanIsles says:

Now allow the whites to be home jerseys and the darks for the road.

  43. avatar Dorfer81 says:

Excellent news. I can’t believe so many fans bought the bad joke that the current uni’s are. I love the script on the helmet.

  44. avatar Dorfer81 says:

P.S. The Isles should show the Mets how to do a “retro” uniform.

  45. avatar Lorne Myers says:

Great news CB, I actually asked you about this at Point Blank night, kind of funny that is now official a few days later. Post 41, I agree that I want the home whites brought back as well, but that is up to the league not the Islanders.

  46. avatar Pete DeBenedetto says:

3rd’s for next year…..a script Long Island across the front…just Long Island.

  47. avatar bergie20 says:

awesome news! our retro royal is one of the best jerseys in the nhl. i assume the vintage white will be very similar to what bridgeport is wearing now. i think the lighthouse shoulder patch should be on the whites. that would be cool.

  48. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

I had faith that they would do this! The whites for the away will be so sweet! I can’t wait to get a JT or KO away next season.

  49. avatar Steve says:

I am glad that they’re bring a matching retro white jersey for next year. However, it would have been better if that white retro became their home jersey, NOT away. NHL should bring back home whites. Fans see less variety when visitors wear white most of the time. I also think that the road teams should wear their primary non-white jerseys when the home team wears a 3rd jersey. If the Islanders wear their old orange jersey as their 3rd jersey at home against the Devils who wear red, would anybody be confused?

  50. avatar mLem says:

Actually when they throw the game on MSG Plus 2 I think a lot of people would be confused…

  51. avatar ron says:

for next season, no more 3rd jerseys.

it’s hockey, not a fashion show

  52. avatar jethro09 says:

Great news. Not that the uniforms are terrible, I just don’t think the team can go wrong with the old ’72 uniforms. IMO, one of the best uniforms in hockey. Period.

  53. avatar isles711 says:

    Love it !
No reason they can’t add a lighthouse patch on the shoulder of the white and or royal blue jersey.
I always thought the “Montauk” patch on the shoulder of the horrible Fisherman jersey looked incredibly cool.

Hope the whites look more like the early 80′s one, which is different than the Retro blues they are wearing now.

  54. avatar TimQ says:

Glad to hear. I never liked the current RBK jerseys, or the pumpkin ones. All we need now are some more real players to put into the uniforms.

  55. avatar Joe NYC says:

54 comments on the jersey! gotta love isles fans. General comment – this is hands down the best sports blog out there. other bloggers should take notes. i can’t find a blog as good for jets or yanks. thanks cb.

  56. avatar Phil says:

Thanks for the update CB. I’m glad to see the Islanders listened to their fans and took the effort to make this happen. As an Orioles fan who watched management struggle for years with getting “Baltimore” on the away jerseys, it’s impossible to overestimate just how much such things mean to those who care about the team. I agree with all those above who said the Isles should have never changed their unis in the first place.

  57. avatar Southard says:

they got the jerseys right and they got the goal song right. they’re also actually winning some games. incredible.

  58. avatar Gillies Goring says:

No Lighthouse patches. NO gimmicks. Crest on the front, name and number on the back.

  59. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Can we pick a jersey and stick with it? As long as it has the classic logo, pick a color blue and keep it for a couple years.

  60. avatar Crackhead Theo says:

Great news. Now keep this for years. No need for anymore change. This is classic, it looks sweet, and everyone loves it.

  61. avatar RPchief says:

hopefully they wear the royal blue hockey pants with the white jersey, that was a great look. THey should do away with the dark blue pants that they wear on the road.

  62. avatar SeanG says:

I love the 3rd jerseys and am fine with them becoming the new regular jerseys next year although I guess I’m in the minority in saying that I always thought the Isles did the best job of any team with the post-lockout new jerseys. The only issue I have with the retro jersey is that there is too much white in the back that hangs down at the bottom. The Rags had this same problem when the new jerseys came out but they corrected it mid-way thru that first season. The Isles need to curtail all that white in the back, too. The Isles did actually modify the shades of blue and orange through the years, I think a lot of people out there either forget that or don’t realize that. The early 90s “classic” jerseys had a darker shade of blue and orange than the jerseys in the Dynasty years. Plus, obviously the blue in the current 3rd is much lighter than the blue I see in my 1992 blue Steve Thomas jersey that I still have. So, I assume if they say they are gonna match the white jersey, then it will be a 1972 white jersey and not a dynasty years jersey. Also, since they are going retro, I say no patches of any kind, because that would not be retro, now, would it? I think the Flyers have already made the orange jersey their new home jersey, as it should be. It is a great jersey. The Flyers were always and always should be the “orange jersey team,” NOT the black jersey team. That was a mistake. I think the Flyers have only worn the black twice this season. As for the Oilers, their classic jersey is the best, too. I probably love it b/c it is the same colors as the Isles. They have only worn the modern dark jersey at home once this season. Unfortunately I have a strange suspicion it is only because it is 30 years in the league for the Oilers. I hope not though. Plus the Oil whites are terrible jerseys.

  63. avatar TM says:

First thing this godforsaken franchise has done right in 15 years.

They don’t even look like NYI in those dopey water wing disasters they wear now.

  64. avatar puckhead says:

finally….now they just gotta wear white at home and all will b right in the world…

  65. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

TM (64) first thing franchise did right was get rid of Milbury.

Love the idea of the White Jersey. I already have the Tavares Blue Retro. Love it.

  66. avatar the bomber says:

can somebody tell me what the new goal song is?? keep hearing its good/it sucks etc but no idea what it is?

  67. avatar MN says:

Finally. Now I hope I don’t have to hear about them changing their jerseys for the next 30 years, at least.

  68. avatar Mark says:

I agree with comment #12, they to me were the nicest jersey’s in all of hockey. Please make the whites “The Classic White’s from 1980, with the Crest, the same size it was in 1980. With the NHL patch at the base of the V Neck White, and the should also where white tee shirts under the white jersey’s. Thanks Chris, Mark N/J

  69. avatar Kenny in NJ says:

Been a fan since ’76- ’77. The royal blue is the way to go. Got my Moulson retro replica at the game on Sat night. Love it! Best one yet, and I have five, going back to the post fisherman wavy days when they allowed the original logo back for 16 games that year. Now I’ll have more money for tickets. Besides, I’ll never be able to convince my wife I need another one after this.

  70. avatar ogam5 says:

There is a very, very good reason why the NHL shouldn’t ever go back to the V-neck style; all my jerseys w/o lacing are stretched out considerably and the RBK material, coupled with the ties, help them to retain their shape well. Also, it’s a distinctive, very recognizable part of hockey’s heritage.

As for the overall retro redesign, I’m of the opinion that the replica 3rd is as close to a perfect Islanders jersey as it gets (logo looks better than the authentic, and again, under NO circumstances should the team ever revert to a 10″ crest – last one looked AWFUL as have all previously) and the whites should be identical to it, INCLUDING the broader blue arm stripes as are visible on the Sound Tigers away jerseys to maintain continuity…..

  71. avatar Andre says:

That’s great about the Islanders going back to their roots. I, too, believe that teams should wear whites at home as well. NBA teams wear third jerseys too but the whites and yellows(Lakers) are worn at home. Speaking of yellow, I would love to see the Kings back in their purple and gold uniforms with a home white uniform and a secondary home yellow one.

  72. avatar ogam5 says:

I’ve mentioned this previously too, but the reason the Isles went to a darker blue was to provide more contrast – probably why darker tones have been slightly more popular with a lot of fans – still, with less B & W photos being taken, not a huge concern anymore…..

  73. avatar PreissDog says:

I love the retros. They are based on the 1974-1977 jerseys when the team first showed signs of life. The collar ties are awesome – retro ’70s at its best. Sometime around 1987 they started going Navy Blue. The idea originally was that the the Islanders colors were the same as Nassau County – hopefully the colors and team will remain. My only complaint is that they should wear the orange numbers and letters from 1972 on the blues.

  74. avatar NFL Uniforms says:

I am also a football fan, this is a good article on American football, great writing, I like their uniforms, football uniforms intended to buy some. Thanks for information.
