Geez, no luck lately with the prospects health.
-
Bryan said it best.
-
Trade him.
-
Geez, the poor kid.
-
That sucks.
-
Wow, we have the luck of George Costanza.
-
Sad to hear. Get well!
-
This is fantastic news *sarcasm* But really this sucks and now puts his chances at around 0% to move into the pros next year. Not that his chances were great but it was possible he could have come into the AHL. He is losing a lot of development time.
-
Okay…terrific
-
Atleast this happened now and not in June when the mini camps start up with Trotts. I’m sure he’ll keep his cardio up, and he will have plenty of hockey to watch in the meantime. Study your tapes Calvin. Don’t forget how long Neilson was out last year with his injury. He made a strong comeback. Have faith boys, he’s still a kid.
-
Hope and pray he gets well. Please not another Kevin Cheveldayoff our first round pick in 1988 who blew his knee out in the juniors and never was the same.
-
If we give him a 15 yr deal, it will give him time to heal
-
A big setback for another of our top two D prospects! JT will have a big, three point game tonight.
-
ouch , not the kind of news I was hoping to learn on my vist here .
good luck with the operation Cal
-
A concussion, now this, deHaan aeems very brittle. In related news, the guy everyone thought the Islanders would take, Zack Kassian was suspended 20 games for crushing someone at center ice. Why didnt we fill a major need with a nasty sob like Kassian????
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Why…..? -
kassian was not the play if not dehaan we should have drafted kulikov
-
Gotta love some “fans”. An 18 year old kid seperates his shoulder and all we can think is he was a draft mistake.
Good luck Calvin. Enjoy the drugs, it’ll be the last time you’ll get ‘em without having to pee in a cup for the commish.
Looking forward to seeing you next year! -
Injuries are a part of the game. Guys like Bergie and Sutton have missed major time and are good to go now.
Plus, it might be a blessing. At least now de Haan is getting the injuries out of the way?
-
saw that Kassian play. not a fan of that.
hope CDH gets well soon..same with Hamonic. -
Not good news at all. If DeHaan is this fragile in the Junior ranks what will happen to him when (if) he makes the jump to the NHL.
-
@ Mike – because the Islanders are hoping matt Martin will fill that role.
-
Great Job on HNIC Radio. I loved the de Haan story from Jeff. Calvin’s nickname should be Cobra! Sucks that he’ll be out for 6 months though.
-
Let the second guessing of drafting de Haan continue.
Let’s just all take it easy. At least it wasn’t like Koskinen where he missed pretty much an entire season. Sure it hinders development and an injury is never a good thing, but at least he did play in 34 games this year. Let the kid recuperate and strengthen up that shoulder.
Odds of him starting in Bridgeport next year were slim anyway with the hopeful addition of Hamonic there. Gives the kid more time to get his game right and grow into his body.
Kassian’s name is about to become more prevalent on this board than Colin Campbell’s.
-
kassian is having a very dissapointing season and has just been suspended for 20 games. get over kassian, hes scott parker.
-
Looks like Campbell is playing with his voodoo dolls again.
-
Lovely…
-
weird stuff like this happens, and i still believe that it was good drafting him. u come back even stronger. i have had the surger on my shoulder and it fixes all the problems you have. feel better soon
-
We are going to have a problem with this kid. He has suffered a few different injuries already at a very early stage. It just seems like he is forming a pattern.
-
injuries are a part of the game, its a shame to see a top prospect go down but people cant be calling to trade him or calling drafting him a mistake. if every team traded a prospect when they had a significant injury it would be chaos. heck, brodeur sat out most of last years season with an injury, and look how much its affected his game since.
-
Folks, he’s 18, let him grow up and fill out before you label him brittle and a total bust.
-
That’s horrible. I feel for the kid. Our two top D prospects have just had shoulder surgery – not good. Garth should definitely try to snag a few more Dmen this summer a the draft. This will make it more difficult for Calvin to make the NHL next year (which might be a blessing in disguise).
-
Really not that big of a deal. He has already played a lot of hockey this year. Get him healthy and in camp next year.
-
For a guy like DeHann this is a devestating injury. The kid needs to grow and get stronger physically and that is very hard to do coming off major shoulder surgery. This may set him back a whole year. I don’t see him going to Bridgeport until 2011 at the earliest.
-
Bummer – 6 months is a long time at that age but hopefully he’ll let himself rehab fully.
Nothing final or long-term needs to come out of this if handled correctly, and he should be ready for training camp next year.
-
Welcome to the Islanders Calvin
-
Not a big deal us Islanders panic because we all know we are accustomed to injury. He will be fine!
-
Oh no. Hillen is done.
-
oh boy hillen
-
this is what happens when you bring in a rangers announcer to mess with karma. bye de hann and now hillen
-
Oh my God! Now Jack Hillen too! I couldn’t even watch the replay. And the shot was from all people is Ovechkin.
-
Isle’s top 2 defensive prospects big injuries … welcome to the Isles’ injury wammy fellas.
That can’t be good for the Isles’ defense development … we needed these guys developed yesterday.
-
Isles being completely outclassed tonight
Not much else you can say so far
-
Any update on Hillen for us at the game???
-
Welcome to Islanders Country Mr. de Haan!!
-
How was this injury sustained? Still young
-
At least we have Bruno, who is having a hell of a game.
-
bruno is a hot mess , 3rd goal was all him , watched as his goalie got wacked at
-
No fight in the boys tonight. No completed passes. Poor positioning. Looked like the zombie planet. The caps were just practicing against us. Coaching staff needs a plan B for nights like this. I don’t mind losing to a team like the caps–but come on could you please show up for the game? I hope we can regroup quickly, we are so close to catching the rags—don’t let it slip now. GO ISLES.

I think its over for Dehaan.
He has been a big disappointment for the generals this year and looked horrible at the world juniors being benched alot.
He wasn’t cut out for the rigours and toughness of the NHL, or OHL so it seems. Should have taken a scholarship somewhere. He is frail and has had alot of injuries including concussions. Too bad for him and another ottawa player ryan spooner. Extreme talent also but very slight and weak. He just broke his collarbone. Too bad for both. I think they are both done.
Shoulder surgery that young is not good. -
Easy,Jim! DeHaan is all of 18 years old. He may not have had a good year in Juniors and was abit sloppy in the WJC, but kids that age do heal, grow into their bodies and find their niche. Calvin was exceptional in ’08-09. He is 6’1″ and with proper weight training will fill out. It is waaaay to early and rather silly to conclude he is ‘done’. At least give him a chance to start. Just to add,he was so impressive in training camp long and hard thought was given to keeping him.
-
I disagree with “downer” Jim – Last year de Haan missed 0 games and had 0 injuries in the OHL during his full 68 game rookie season. This year he is about 15 lbs heavier and has encountered some unfortunate injuries that are just part of the game so how can you say he is frail? He has not had any concussions – just kept out of WJC games for precautionary reasons and they had enough D-men to back-fill. He’s still only 18 and growing into his good sized frame. Cut some slack on these young prospects and let them heal & develop accordingly.
-
DeHaan is done??? Isn’t that a bit overdramatic?
-
An Islander fan over-dramatic!? I’m SHOCKED!!!
-
perfect
-
Everyone, let’s step back from the ledge. Hopefully, surgery will go well, and they can keep him around the team, watching and learning. Kinda like a rookie QB carrying the clipboard. See ya in 2012 CDH! Good luck on your rehab.
-
No call for panic. This will set him back a year in his development. That sucks, but it’s not critical. With very rare exception, defensemen generally are not ready for high quality NHL play until at least the ripe old age of 22. Calvin’s still 18. This just assures that he will continue rehabbing, growing, strengthening, and learning in juniors and Bridgeport next year. Maybe he’ll be ready to join the Isles in 2011–when he’s 20 years old. Maybe they keep him on the farm an extra year. What’s so bad about a well developed 21 year old rookie dman?
-
He ReInjured his bad shoulder that has been holding him back all year. Now he’ll finally get that shoulder fixed & now he doesn’t have to worry about getting a 2nd concussion in a short time period. Its a shame that deHaan will miss this weeks OHL All Star game he was selected to(so was Casey Cikikas). But he did get to play in the WJC and had a productive season. His Oshawa team might have missed the OHL playoffs anyway. Its not the end of the world. Before the injury there was a 30% chance he would make the Isles Opening Night Roster next year & a 98% chance he would make the Oct 2011 Roster. Maybe now those chances went down to 20% & 95%. That’s not so terrible. Going into next year we will still have 3 Blue Chip D-Man prospects(Hamonic, deHaan, Donavan) & 3 Very good D-Man prospects(Kohn, Kessel, Katic). Niemi, Ness & Klementyev s/b dismissed until they show something more.
-
Apparently dehaan had a number of concussions in his minor hockey days. If you look deep enough you will find the truth. Not raining on a parade, just stating facts. And people who think a shoulder is stronger or better than ever after major surgery don’t understand anatomical facts. This is a serious injury and it will stick with him for life. I think you fans are in for a rude awakening.
-
Jim#60, you seem to have an old deep-seated personal grudge against this kid – maybe your kid got cut from a team he played for and you’re still reeling from it
Unless you’re one of his old physicians (I doubt it since no doctor would waste his time here nor would they give up any confidential info) it’s unlikely that you have “the facts” on his real medical history. I do know for a fact that he has had a baseline concussion test and repeated it after the hit he took at WJC and there were no neurological changes – hence no ill effects & no concussion.
Look at 2nd 09 pick big Victor Hedman, he’s already had a concussion earlier this year (hit from Chris Neil) and has a history of them but no mention of him. de Haan reminds me of a young Duncan Keith or Brian Campbell with similar size speed and skill. Given a few years I’ll bet he’ll be of similar stature. No disputing that shoulder surgery is no laughing matter – full recovery depends on how well you re-hab it. Jim, you need to polish your crystal ball a bit as your vision is cloudy

“Unlikely” is a speculative word.
Wise to remember that. -
So is “Apparently”…..
-
Glass Jaw, Multiple concussions and a torn shoulder. The icelanders sure know how to pick em. The only thing my kid was cut from was Granite.
Good Luck.
