Jim#60, you seem to have an old deep-seated personal grudge against this kid - maybe your kid got cut from a team he played for and you're still reeling from it ;-) Unless you're one of his old physicians (I doubt it since no doctor would waste his time here nor would they give up any confidential info) it's unlikely that you have "the facts" on his real medical history. I do know for a fact that he has had a baseline concussion test and repeated it after the hit he took at WJC and there were no neurological changes - hence no ill effects & no concussion.
Look at 2nd 09 pick big Victor Hedman, he's already had a concussion earlier this year (hit from Chris Neil) and has a history of them but no mention of him. de Haan reminds me of a young Duncan Keith or Brian Campbell with similar size speed and skill. Given a few years I'll bet he'll be of similar stature. No disputing that shoulder surgery is no laughing matter - full recovery depends on how well you re-hab it. Jim, you need to polish your crystal ball a bit as your vision is cloudy :-))

Apparently dehaan had a number of concussions in his minor hockey days. If you look deep enough you will find the truth. Not raining on a parade, just stating facts. And people who think a shoulder is stronger or better than ever after major surgery don't understand anatomical facts. This is a serious injury and it will stick with him for life. I think you fans are in for a rude awakening.

He ReInjured his bad shoulder that has been holding him back all year. Now he'll finally get that shoulder fixed & now he doesn't have to worry about getting a 2nd concussion in a short time period. Its a shame that deHaan will miss this weeks OHL All Star game he was selected to(so was Casey Cikikas). But he did get to play in the WJC and had a productive season. His Oshawa team might have missed the OHL playoffs anyway. Its not the end of the world. Before the injury there was a 30% chance he would make the Isles Opening Night Roster next year & a 98% chance he would make the Oct 2011 Roster. Maybe now those chances went down to 20% & 95%. That's not so terrible. Going into next year we will still have 3 Blue Chip D-Man prospects(Hamonic, deHaan, Donavan) & 3 Very good D-Man prospects(Kohn, Kessel, Katic). Niemi, Ness & Klementyev s/b dismissed until they show something more.

No call for panic. This will set him back a year in his development. That sucks, but it's not critical. With very rare exception, defensemen generally are not ready for high quality NHL play until at least the ripe old age of 22. Calvin's still 18. This just assures that he will continue rehabbing, growing, strengthening, and learning in juniors and Bridgeport next year. Maybe he'll be ready to join the Isles in 2011--when he's 20 years old. Maybe they keep him on the farm an extra year. What's so bad about a well developed 21 year old rookie dman?

Everyone, let's step back from the ledge. Hopefully, surgery will go well, and they can keep him around the team, watching and learning. Kinda like a rookie QB carrying the clipboard. See ya in 2012 CDH! Good luck on your rehab.

I disagree with "downer" Jim - Last year de Haan missed 0 games and had 0 injuries in the OHL during his full 68 game rookie season. This year he is about 15 lbs heavier and has encountered some unfortunate injuries that are just part of the game so how can you say he is frail? He has not had any concussions - just kept out of WJC games for precautionary reasons and they had enough D-men to back-fill. He's still only 18 and growing into his good sized frame. Cut some slack on these young prospects and let them heal & develop accordingly.
