DEVILS 4 ISLANDERS 2
Interactive Plus/Minus (and Islanders rock blocks)
9:28 pm, NVMC - Interactive Plus/Minus and the Point Blank Rock Challenge after the Devils’ 4-2 victory over the Islanders…
Plus: Islanders fans responding to the positive developments in the Country with the second sellout of the week, third of the season (the home opener).
Minus: The Islanders often point out after games how they often got the better of play 5-on-5. They hit three posts and missed a few other big chances, but you couldn’t say that tonight.
Plus: First big Islanders save of the night made by - who else? - Kyle Okposo three minutes into the game.
Minus: Islanders look disjointed early in the first, leave the captain of the U.S. Olympic Team wide open for the opening goal of the game.
Plus: John Tavares shanks a pass right on the stick to Okposo to tie the game at 1-1 early into Colin White’s five-minute penalty (and game misconduct) for boarding Sean Bergenheim.
Plus: Jamie Langenbrunner saying to Zach Parise on the Devils’ bench, “That guy Okposo did make the Olympic Team, right”? (Okay, I made that up, but he may have).
Minus: Jacques Lemaire’s comedic pre-game monologue about the Coliseum. “I don’t like the locker room. I don’t like my office. The rink is okay. My office is like a washroom and we are six in it. So we can’t turn around if one guy wants to get out.” No doubt Jacques didn’t mind the place when his first Devils team won regularly here.
Minus: Not learning from Dave Tippett’s blunder in Phoenix, Lemaire doesn’t put a Devil in the penalty box during White’s five-minute penalty. The Islanders get an extra 32 seconds on the power play. Twice in one season? Astounding. And Lemaire had breaks after two Islanders power play goals to correct his mistake. Brain cramp caused by cramped office, I guess.
Plus: Islanders out-shoot the Devils 14-1 in the second period.
Minus: New Jersey, who played last night, was the far better team in the third.
Minus: New Jersey’s only shot was Zach Parise’s pass off Freddy Meyer’s skate and behind Rick DiPietro to tie the game at 2-2 with 32 seconds left in the period.
Minus: It’s an embarrassment to a great sport and league that teams are going on power plays because the lame composite sticks break in half, drawing slashing penalties. Example: Travis Zajac’s phantom “slash” in the first period.
Minus: Rick DiPietro seemed to have a lot of trouble getting the puck to stick in his glove.
Minus: The headline in the business section of Newsday this week, “Fighting for $186M for Point Blank.” Turns out the story was about a lawsuit involving a body armor company called Point Blank Solutions. Darn.
Even: Lots of Devils fans in the expensive seats tonight, right at center ice.
Plus: Assuming he doesn’t return from his two-game suspension kinder and gentler, Andy Sutton and Alexander Ovechkin will be fun to watch on Tuesday.

The Point Blank Rock Challenge
In honor of Sunday’s big game, K-ROCK is playing rock blocks all weekend in which each song starts with a J, then an E, then a T and S. Got me thinking of the day, any year now, when the Islanders are in the Stanley Cup Final. Maybe K-Rock wouldn’t do it, but Roger Luce and the folks at WBAB would.
(There’s always time in a Devils game for side projects like this or another Australian Open forecast for FanHouse. I’m 3-0 heading into Sunday’s big Justine Henin match).
So here’s mine. Some of these are not necessarily my all-time favorite tunes, just some standards of classic rock radio to get the challenge started.
I: “I Am the Walrus” by the Beatles
S: “Sweet Home Alabama,” by Lynyrd Skynyrd
L: “Layla” by Derek and the Dominoes
A: “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
N: “Night Moves” by Bob Seger
D: “Down by the River” by Neil Young
E: “Every Breath You Take” by The Police
R: “Rock and Roll” by Led Zeppelin
S: “Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones
Here’s the Point Blank Rock Challenge: Submit your I-S-L-A-N-D-E-R-S list, BUT no duplicate songs. Once a poster lists a song, you cannot use it.
They do not have to be classic rock. Just good. Take your time. There’s no Islanders practice tomorrow.
Your Plus/Minus is also welcomed.

Very winnable game, depleted NJ team that played last night. Not a gimmie, but this should have been two points.
Hate watching the Devils boring game. Get it back Tuesday.
minus: the 4 posts…those were shots that should have wound up in the back of the net. but what can you do with very little skill and no help coming.
minus: islanders keep the devils without a shot for the majority of the period and ofcourse its that @$$clown parise who scores, and ofcourse it goes in off freddy meyer the MCCXXXIVth.
minus: devil hockey….hate it with a passion.
minus: isles not taking full advantage of that pp to suck the life out of a team that hasnt won a lot recently.
minus: having to listen to ken daneyko gloat about how great the devils and their one good line are. (and here he goes, right on cue)
minus: john tavares has yet to break out of his slump. what the hell is going on?
plus: kyle okposo….by FAR the best player on the ice and only player deserving of getting said plus. words cant express how great of a player he is, and is going to be, both on and off the ice. right now NOBODY is more deserving of being the captain that KO. if only everyone has the fire he has. i guess someones gotta call the team out.
Maybe it was just me, but it didn’t seem like the D was engaged in the offensive zone tonight. They are usually keeping the puck in a lot. Wonder why…

Not to take anything anyway from a wonderful last 3 weeks or so, but that third period was INEXCUSABLE! You have a packed house at home and you give an effort like that??? Gordon should have the Isles do a BAG SKATE tomorrow!

Minus: I know he is only 19 but Tavares needs to be treated like every other player on the team. He looks lost right now and is not contributing. I know he’ll benefit from the Olympic break but I think he should sit out a game right now
Minus: Only 20 minutes of real solid play tonight
Plus: 2 goals on the major penalty
Plus: Good crowd. We’ll take the Devil fans’ money to sit in the expensive seats

This was a good loss for the Islanders. The Devils showed EXACTLY what it takes to be a top 5 team in the NHL tonight. It would have been another SO for Marty B if Isles didnt have that albeit well deserved 5 min PP that messed up Sean Bergenheims face. The Islanders should take a peek at the Devils 3rd period and study study study. I really HATE this loss b/c no pts at all, it was so close (all the posts hit behind Brodeur) and YET AGAIN we could have skipped over the Rags tonight b/c they got beat into a mudhole by the Habs. Ugh. UGH!

Every time we lose a game I get the feeling that our record is a mirage. I feel like we’re never going to get to the next level. I’m not overly excited to see the Capitals come to town Tuesday but I am excited for the schedule that comes afterwards leading up to the olympic break. We have a very good opportunity to distance ourselves from the pack either negatively or positively. Let’s hope for the latter.

The second period looked more like what we’ve come to expect of the Islanders. The first and third periods looked very September. Okposo looked like he was the only one who really wanted to win. Hopefully everyone gets refocused for the next game.
Rick Dipietro still needs to get his game back. This was his first challenge and he still showed rust. Sutton was really missed tonight. Freddy Meyer also didn’t look good.
The fact that Kyle Okposo isn’t representing the United States is upsetting to me. Not from an Islander perspective, but from an American one.
Islanders, Symphonic Metal addition. You’ll probably have never heard of any, or very few, of these, all are either imported from europe or American underground…Actually, the Kamelot track could almost be called euro too, and the rest are all european.
I: Illusive Consensus - Epica
S: See Who I Am - Within Temptation
L: Lunar Sanctum - Kamelot
A: April Rain - Delain
N: New Shores - Lunatica
D: Devoted - Lacuna Coil
E: Ever dream - Nightwish
R: Reflections - Legenda Aurea
S: Solemn Sea - Leaves’ Eyes
This was fun.
Oh and by the way, I still hate the fact that we didn’t draft Zach Parise. I look at that as one of the biggest mistakes in the last 10 years for the Isles, and he’s been making us pay for it with that Devils jersey on…
This is from NHL.com, and I wanted to share it:
“It doesn’t matter where you are, it’s always nice to get a win,” Parise said. “I don’t think anyone knew we hadn’t won here in a year. They’re playing well, though. You’ve got to give them credit. They’re playing good hockey, and we had to be a good team to beat them.”
love the fact that this team works hard every night.also okposo after the first period saying we didn’t play well.we where not ready to play.can’t wait till he’s the captain.
I - I don’t know - Ozzy
S - Sanitarium - Metalica
L - Louder - Britny Fox
A - Anti Social - Anthrax
N - Nothin’ for Nothin’ - Cinderella
D - Devils Island - Megadeth
E - Everybody Wants some - Van Halen
R - Rock and Roll all Nite - KISS
S - Same Ol’ Situation - Motley Crue
BTW. Please stop playing dance music at the coliseum. It should never be heard at a hockey game. Always the hardest rock possible. Anything else is embarrassing.
NOT surprised by Parise the Younger’s comments; like his father, Zack is a class act (as much as he drives me up a wall with games like last night’s!) Note to No. 63: Sly did “If You Want Me To Stay” first and, let me offer up my own Islanders-themed block, all from 1975, when it all REALLY began:

minus - Isles played only one period last night. Not gonna win with an effort like that.
minus - you can’t outplay an opponent and out shoot them 18-1 and give up a goal on that one shot
minus = Bergie’s nose.
plus - KO, TH and JH.
Plus - Sutton coming back next game!
Even though the Isles have been giving us a good show the past month … I’ve had an uneasy feeling about the team… JT playing well off the puck lately … but seems like he’s in a funk. When Kyle was having a slump putting the biscuit in the basket at least he was playing an overall good game. I’m confident that JT will put it together because you can see he’s almost there.
***
The team however has won a ton of extra session games … they seem to be playing as well as a team of their talent makeup and experience can. I think they can stick around to March, but by then other teams will have made a move to solidify their teams by the trade deadline. Snow will not make a move … and he shouldn’t.
The big moment will be how they are positioned going into the Olympic break. Philly is getting hot again … we gotta look over our shoulder.
I’m counting the days to when crusty old Lamoriello and that Neanderthal Lemaire head off to a Rest Home. Watching four guys line up in a box at center ice is the most boring hockey ever invented. And the only reason the New Jersey Trappers play that way is that their line-up other than Parise is crap and they can’t win any other way. Good luck in the playoffs against the Pens and Caps, that’ll work real well. (Sarcasm intended.)
Oh, and I want to hear one Devils apologist out there tell me the Devils don’t trap anywhere. You could’ve painted a 4-corner box on the ice tonight to see where they were setting up.
As for the Islanders, that was a dismal performance. Absolutely no urgency on the part of the defense to get the first outlet pass out quick before the Trappers set up their little box.

Outside of that lucky missed pass by Tavares has anyone seen him the last few games? Duchene has better upside…He crashes the net gets dirty along the boards and is a better skater.

…..remember when we where all ripping the redline report about placing Duschene ahead of JT in scouting…….well although its early it might be time to revisit that as Duschene is ahead of JT in rookie scoring and seems to be getting stronger. While JT looks like Bambi on ice at times.

I was at the game. Devils deserved the win, they were far better in the 2nd and 3rd. They just have more quality players like Langenbrunner and Parise. DP played good.
CB, IMO it wasnt a sellout, I saw lots of empty seats, maybe a couple of hundreds.
It was still a sell out. 16250..DP looked real good considering this is still like his preseason. Would have liked to see Rollie in the net but don’t feel it was all DP’s fault…Should be fun Tuesday vs Caps and OVIE!!! GO ISLES!!
@Blizzard et al.
Anyone judging the 2009 draft based on the 2009 Calder race is pretty short-sighted. So Duchene is ahead of Tavares in the FIRST HALF of YEAR 1. It’s the beginning of all of their careers. Let’s talk in a few years (although more reasonably would be if and when they become eligible for the HoF).
Will be in town this week and Hoping to be at the caps game. Go ISLES!

2 lost points. Very winnable game. Isles are at their best when they are skating and peppering shots on goal. Last night they were dumping the puck in which was always retrieved by the devils. On the up-side, I Love Hillen. He joins the rush every chance he gets. Also, what can you say about Okposo? If he could improve his aim IMO he could be one of the most dominating players in the league. Sooo happy he is ours!

Wasn’t the typical Islander Effort of recent past. For the better part of the game, especially in the Third Period (before Devils took the lead) the Islanders were always one step behind in the battles for the puck.
I have to think that the Ice Time finally caught up to Streit by the time he gave up on the fight for that puck on the Empty Netter. He didn’t show much effort on that play at all!

The Devils played 40 minutes of hockey and the Islanders played 20 minutes. With all of that, they still came close. I hated to see the home winning streak fall by the wayside, but they are 4-2 in a tough stretch that finishes up vs. Washington on Tuesday.

Of course realistically we should have expected Tavares to have his share of ups and downs in his first season. Since scoring 2 goals in a victory over Toronto on December 9th, since then in 21 games, he has only scored 6 points. This has been a tough stretch for him even though the team has been playing fairly well during his slump.

On the Tavares v. Duchene debate:
1. Full credit goes to CB for having the cajones to go out on a limb 8 months ago and pick Duchene as the player with the most upside out of Tavheduch.
2. The main concern isn’t whether JT will be a scoring machine in a few years (he will be), it’s the point made by Blizzard (#86): Tavares looks worse as the season goes on, while Duchene seems to be hitting his stride. Both are rookies, facing tough competition, but Matt seems to be adjusting much better and faster.
3. That said, Duchene has a LOT more offensive support than JT gets with the Isles, and plays in a conference that plays a more open style of hockey.
4. The draft is a crapshoot - something to think about for those of you suggesting a lottery pick would be more beneficial to the rebuild than a post-season appearance.
great neil young song!
Islander505, Slayer did an awesome cover of it for the Less Than Zero soundtrack. Its not a ripoff, bands cover other bands songs all the time. Last Caress is another cover song on my list.
Hopefully losing 2 out of 3 is just a little blip that the team will recover from.
Most of us wanted JT, we got our wish, and I am fine with it. He’ll be just fine and will only get better. He’s hit a bit of a wall, but that is normal. Whose to say Duchene won’t have a sophomore slump while JT explodes next year. You never know but I am more than happy with JT in our lineup and I think he is a keeper.

All the action was on the right side of the broadcast screen last night. Biggest minus was inability to get through the neutral zone. Looked like the Isles were playing behind in the third period from the outset. … Not that big a deal that both Montreal and Philly leapfrogged, but it just goes to show the importance of every game at this point. No margin for error at all. Glad we’re talking about this. Fun season.
@ 82: TREMENDOUS call with “She’s Moved On” with Porcupine Tree. Heavily underrated song off the In Absentia album. Awesome.
some prize rookies have mediocre rookie years and shine the next - think Stamkos and others have good rookie years and slump the next - think Schenn, others fade into the distance without doing anything - think Filatov.

Hard not to repeat…but I get props with the double reference to the Islanders and you!!! Now everyone should make an imix so we can buy the all!!!!
There is nothing to complain about in regards to John Tavares. No one should be a hypocrite by complaining now. He’s probably responsible for a collective Baby-boom on Long Island. I’d love to see the census in 10 years from now and see how many babies were born in April of 2010 in the Long Island area… and how many of their Dad’s are Islander fans.
With the way this team is set up, there is no focal point for the opponent to eyeball and shut down. Taveres’ worth will improve as the player around him get better. We all knew, or at least it was made clear, that he was not an end-to-end guy. He’s a finisher. Also, when he learns to create room for himself, the goals will go in. He had a great start, but he still requires some patience from the fans. He’ll be fine.

If the draft was held today ..most people take duschene i believe. Tavares is so slow and not physical that you simply don’t notice he is even playing. About as boring a multi million $$ foward in the NHL. I wonder if isle scouts advised snow to pass on Tavares but snow picked him anyway to sell tickets.. Jerseys… Not cause a fan riot.

That’s the second loss in a row that Streit gave up on the play leading to the empty net goal. Weak play from what is supposed to be our best defenseman.
OK, I’ll be the one who has to bring this up:
- BIG MINUS: We always get beat by the player we all wanted ,who fell into our laps, but they took Nill-son instead. ZP Parise and we passed. Sorry JP! It would have been fun.
