Predict the Punishment: I say Andy Sutton’s relatively clean record and reputation for throwing big but fair hits this season will result in no further discipline from Inconsistent Colin Campbell. Make your call in Comments.

When a team has played as well as any team in the league since Christmas, it’s okay to have moral victories. The Islanders battled some iffy officiating and a pair of superstars tonight, and still did not quit on the road against the defending Stanley Cup champions in the second of back-to-backs. Only an unfortunate hit-from-behind by Andy Sutton prevented the Islanders from making one last comeback.

In its own way, tonight’s performance was as impressive as the blowouts at home over Detroit and New Jersey.

Of course, it will be a lot easier for the Islanders to look back on this loss in the Igloo if they take care of business the rest of the week. They have Florida on Thursday after the Panthers play in New Jersey the night before. The Islanders host a rematch against the Devils on Saturday, 24 hours after New Jersey plays Montreal at the Rock. Four important points. Four obtainable points.

This has turned into some season, huh?

9:50 pm – A ticky-tack penalty call on Kyle Okposo leads to a Malkin power play goal off a gorgeous move by Alex Goligoski. Islanders do not score on ensuing power play. Five minutes left.

9:37 pm – The Islanders spend the first 48 seconds of the period driving the Pens batty with their forecheck. A Frans Nielsen pokecheck slides over to Trent Hunter, who scores. Richard Park scores at 7:11 to tie it. The Islanders do not quit.

*

9:00 pm – If the Islanders fall tonight, there won’t be any over-reaction from this blogger (never!). This is what happens when your best players take over – and your best players are Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Still, the Islanders continue to fight. This is a very, very good sign.

Evgeni Malkin scores on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 2-0. Kyle Okposo has the equivalent of three breakaways – one on a penalty shot – and cannot convert. Brent Johnson makes a splendid split save on the penalty shot.

Bill Guerin, sporting the Boogie Nights ‘stache, converts a perfect pass from Crosby. Later on, after Andy Sutton makes it 3-1 with a power play goal, Crosby scores again. A healthy Brendan Witt may have helped limit a least a little of Crosby’s production.

Freddy Meyer makes it 4-2, as the game turns to shinny.

*

8:13 pm – The Penguins may have the edge in talent with their pair of high-end superstars, but again the Islanders look like they can play (and beat) anybody. Hard work in front of the net by The Tank leads to a turnover and goal by Sidney Crosby.

Strange delay-of-game penalty on Dwayne Roloson. You’d think a referee would show more respect towards a goaltender with so many seasons on the back of his hockey card. These are just the hurdles a team looking to break through need to overcome.

Early on, the fans at the Igloo did a nice job of getting their team into the game when the Penguins had trouble solving the Islanders. Pittsburgh is the Islanders’ latest opponent to be coming back from a long road trip. Like Lindy Ruff, Dan Bylsma will not make any excuses for his team.

Some AHL All-Star Game trivia: Dwayne Roloson played in the game three times – most recently in 2001. Rick DiPietro played in the classic in 2002

Point Blank reader Will C – determined to see the end of dark jerseys at home – has created a website and petition: www.homewhites.com. Will has always fought the good fight to keep this blog alive, so please check out his site.

7:38 pm - Knew Dwayne (The Rock) Roloson was starting one of these games! I’ll have mini-posts after each period, or earlier if a major event happens. Enjoy the game…CB

  1. avatar Mike From VA says:

haha, never seen quite a penalty like the one on Roloson in a while. Doesn’t help to fuel the fire of how terrible the ref’s have been this year.

  2. avatar inSovietRussiaBlogWritesYou! says:

This team really misses Nate Thompson’s presence in this lineup…

  3. avatar MattyB says:

Garbage goal, bad pinch on boards by JT on the play, but the unlucky 324532 bounces didn’t help

  4. i’ve literally watched hockey since i was a baby, and i never saw such a ridiculous delay of game call in my life. that’s some crap i’d expect from mike leggo.

  5. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

watching the Penguins feed online… they are giving a lot of love to the Isles and especially Okposo. Nice!

  6. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

btw the commentators on the Penguins feed thought the call was garbage as well!

  7. avatar Le Dude says:

When and why did Streit lose the “A”?

  8. avatar michele says:

streit didn’t lose the A…weight the captain came back to play..only allowed two A’s and a C..Streit odd man out..any hoo, the A was bringing his game down, since he doesn’t have, has picked up his play..

  9. avatar isles316 says:

The isles rotate their A’s I believe between road and home games. I think they have 3 or 4 a’s and rotate them.

  10. avatar MJS says:

#2 – I never thought that anyone would say that.

I’m glad I turned away from the game cast for a minute when the Pens scored or I might’ve been grumbling in class.

Glad to hear that the Isles are keeping up the pressure. They’ve come out hard against the Penguins the other times they have played this season, hopefully the hard work pays off.

  11. avatar rob76 says:

When KO missed that breakaway – i knew tonight wasn’t their night – i had a bad feeling about this game all day – hopefully we can be back in full force Thursday against Florida.

  12. avatar Madchef says:

    time to dig deep

  13. avatar Mike from VA says:

Guess third time isn’t a charm for KO. Ugh…

  14. avatar TimQ says:

    Tough stretch for KO

  15. avatar MattyB says:

Nice work by KO, but easy on the praise Jaffe, they guys missed three breakaways in 2 minutes, ummm put one in the net maybe?

  16. avatar Staten Islander says:

I was SURE Ko was going to bury one of those

  17. avatar Staten Islander says:

    This is getting UG-LEE

  18. avatar Mike from VA says:

Mike Leggo is such a fair referee.

  19. avatar Czerkawski says:

    nice moustache billy

  20. avatar Lee says:

Pull Roli and lets watch Ricky hold the fort!

  21. avatar MattyB says:

at least I can go to sleep early

  22. avatar Mike from VA says:

Hahah, He looks like gomez adams with that stupid mustache.

  23. avatar Madchef says:

3 goal lead worst in hockey???? although maybe coming back to earth

  24. avatar Lee says:

Also, Guerin needs to shave the ‘stache he looks like he moonlights in the adult industry in his spare time

  25. avatar eric says:

no forecheck at all to night.

  26. avatar rob76 says:

I have never seen a power play have as much trouble gaining the zone as ours has. Its not just this game or recently but all season. It is so frustrating to watch – even in games we out play the opposition – it is going to be our downfall this year

  27. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

It’s been said a lot this year but was Mark Streit this bad on the PP last year – in terms of carrying the puck into the offensive zone?

  28. avatar dedshark says:

can we please resign sutton. what a goal!

  29. avatar Staten Islander says:

    SUTTS! ok, thats 1

  30. avatar TimQ says:

    Andy Sutton – Offensive superstar

  31. avatar Joseph says:

    Yea baby !!!!!!

  32. avatar dedshark says:

I thought the game was over but we’re back into it 10 seconds later lol!

  33. avatar MattyB says:

    Roloson, awful game

  34. avatar eric says:

    maybe just maybe.

  35. avatar Matt says:

Johnson has been great tonight. We’ve had some chances.

  36. avatar Seth says:

as I predicted before the game, the islanders are not winning this one and this will hopefully shoot the media and more importantly the fans back down to earth. this is year two of a full rebuild and the playoffs may seem possible now, we won’t be so close when the season ends. lets talk again in 3-5 years when the rebuild is over.

  37. avatar James says:

Wow Seth, losing a game to the defending champs and what? You say it will take us 3-5 years to finish the rebuild and bascially that we will miss the playoffs?

Man some fans are so hard to please. I like the fact that this team is fighting back, it shows they are getting better.

  38. avatar MattyB says:

Wow Seth, I didn’t know losing a game to the Defending Cup Champions means the season is over and we can’t talk playoffs in 3 to 5 years. Relax man, i’m upset with this game, buts its their second loss in their last 9 games. It really doesn’ mean much, it’s a road loss in Pittsburgh that’s it. The East is tight, and the Islanders aren’t going away anytime soon.

  39. avatar isles316 says:

Seth, no other teams in the East fighting for the playoffs are that much better than the Isles…We will be around.

  40. avatar Lafars says:

Way to be a party pooper Seth, why predict losses, does it feel good? Do me a favor and don’t watch.

  41. avatar admin says:

I’d like to thank Seth for going out on a limb with his prediction for tonight’s game – what a call! – and for the lecture to the media (!) and the fans. We’ll also hold you to your prediction of the Islanders not even coming close to the playoffs…CB

  42. avatar MattyB says:

    well played CB

  43. avatar dedshark says:

seths still stuck on the taylor hall dream

  44. avatar b says:

seth…..just as people should not know to be clammoring for a stanley cup after this stretch, you also shouldnt be thinking lottey down 2 goals after 2 periods against the stanley cup champions……they have at least earned that from this stretch..

  45. avatar b says:

scrath that…..4-3 seth……goal by hunter…keep your predictions coming

  46. avatar Lafars says:

    Whoooo…plenty of hockey left!!

  47. avatar dedshark says:

hahaha THIS IS A GAME. NICE GOAL HUNTER!!

  48. avatar Staten Islander says:

HUNTER! there is no quit in this team

  49. avatar MattyB says:

they just won’t let me go to bed early will they

  50. avatar dedshark says:

RICHARD PARK YOUR TIME HAS COME!!!!

  51. avatar Staten Islander says:

    wave THAT off!

  52. avatar Lafars says:

Its my birthday tomorrow, all i want is for the Isles to make seth eat his words…thank you Parkie!!!

  53. avatar Chris A says:

    PARKY!!!!

  54. avatar Madchef says:

oh boy, lets go islanders. deh deh deh deh deh

  55. avatar Mike from VA says:

    Yeah PARK! And its allowed!

  56. avatar Joseph says:

Park and it’s not waived off !!!!!!!

  57. avatar Justin Marques says:

Too bad Bergie doesn’t get an assist on that goal…that was one hell of a play at the blueline to pass it off to Hillen who got the shot on net! I love the work ethic and determination. Even if they lose, it was one hell of a game by them. On the flip-side, if they win, just WOW!

  58. avatar mht says:

Amazing grit and will win out over great skill

  59. avatar BrianAlbany says:

    SETH = LOSER

haha just kidding, go Isles…these guys sure are fun to watch…win or lose tonight (hopefully win)

  60. avatar Islesphan25 says:

This ice is worse than any other ice I have ever seen…Puck never lays flat

  61. avatar dedshark says:

wow go figure we dont get the call then okposo gets called. back to the refs determining when the isles should win and lose

  62. avatar TuxTax says:

Sorry CB but Crosby is constantly allowed by the refs to take his liberties but if he gets hit he whines and whines and whines.

  63. avatar Eric says:

Sidney Crosby has to be the biggest whiner in the NHL. I have zero respect for him.

  64. avatar german islesfan says:

grrrr i hate those cindy crosby 5 points so far…

  65. avatar Eric says:

Can Roloson make a save tonight?

  66. avatar Joseph says:

PP, Let’s get it back now.

  67. avatar MattyB says:

What a disgrace. Crosby gets away scot free with everything, What a Disgrace….Rollie had little chance on that but this might be his worst game of the year

  68. avatar TimQ says:

The C on Crosby’s jersey stands for crybaby

  69. avatar Terry19 says:

    Crosby=Baby

  70. avatar b says:

id take that baby on my team

  71. avatar Lafars says:

classy move by rollie there calling for the medic.

  72. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Game over. Hope he is ok…

  73. avatar Madchef says:

wow that sucks, never like to see that happen

  74. avatar James says:

    Hope he is ok

but the PP for the Pens ends this game

  75. avatar Brian in VA says:

Campbell will suspend Sutton 80 games…

  76. avatar MattyB says:

    Nice hit

  77. avatar Staten Islander says:

    glad he’s ok, looked scary

  78. avatar rob says:

campbell will suspend sutton since he loves the isles

  79. avatar Eric says:

Sutton will probably get suspended the rest of the year

  80. avatar Brian in VA says:

    eventhough Dupuis looks okay hopefully

  81. avatar eric says:

    good night gracie.

  82. avatar MattyB says:

Tough area tho, guy turned, hit the wrong spot on the boards, tough break

  83. avatar Lafars says:

If the Isles get a shortie here I will go back to church.

  84. avatar Willy P says:

who wants to bet sutton gets more then a 2 day suspension… my bet would be at least 5 on a play i would call clean and suspension 0-2 days at most

  85. avatar Czerkawski says:

lol willy knowing the NHL, Sutton will get suspended indefinitely. Imagine if he checked Crosby…

  86. avatar PotvinRocks says:

I would garentee that Sutton gets 5. Colin Campbell hates the Islanders.

  87. avatar Willy P says:

Also i use to like crosby cause he does no how to play hockey… However i will never have respect for that(female dog)again, the fact that he complained about the goal for about 5 mins then goes and throws hunter down to the ice and of course nothing was called he is the face of the nhl…

  88. avatar TimQ says:

Is Crosby going to complain that the fans threw all that crap on the ice?

  89. avatar Lafars says:

crappy…hope you are happy seth…at least our boys played the whole game.

  90. avatar german islesfan says:

special teams and Crosby makes the difference tonight :-( without Sutton the next games thats hurts a lot..

  91. avatar James says:

Isles screwed by the officals, what a shock

  92. avatar TimQ says:

I can’t believe that once again we’ll be at the mercy of Colonoscopy Campbell

  93. avatar Lafars says:

I lost respect for Crosby ever since the Valabik donkey punch while the latter was allready tangled up with someone else.

  94. avatar Mike says:

How about that classy move by crosby with that last second shot?!

  95. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

I’ll take that b*tch Crosby on my team any day. Hopefully Sutton isn’t suspended and we shake it off with a big win Thursday. Thanks as always CB. LGI

  96. avatar Mike from VA says:

To be honest, i’m really just sick and tired of the total biases of NHL refereeing. I know that each game has their fair share of bogus calls, but I don’t believe the game should be decided on make up calls and other crap. Sure, we got away with Roloson’s slash at Talbot, but I just feel like the majority go against the Islanders. I mean, we battle ourselves into this game and if islander as so much breathes on a penguin its a penalty. We’ll be w/o our best D man too for a few games. I really do hate Mike Leggo and his staff.

  97. avatar TuxTax says:

    Stay Classy Pittsburgh

  98. avatar James C says:

Im just as proud, if not more proud, of my boys for tonight’s effort against defending cup champs than of after the Detroit, Buffalo or Jersey games of late.

We’re playing inspired hockey in Islander Country.

PS. The Maven nailed it on labeling Crosby one of the whiner’s of the NHL.

  99. avatar Willy P says:

@mike i saw it and if i was on the ice i would have probably give him a good shot there… no need for that at all i never wish injury upon anyone but he has something coming for him and i wouldn’t even care if he went down for a season the nhl would be better for it… oh and there would probably be 50 less penalties called cause he wouldnt be able to complain about them

  100. avatar Alan says:

    #93 – I couldn’t have said it any better — Holy Mackanol!

  101. avatar Mike for Philly says:

Just in for the desk of Colin Cambell:

“The NHL has never seen such a disgusting act of violence from such a joke of an organization. The Rangers…er…I mean the NHL and I have decided that Andy Sutton shall be put in front of a firing squad at dawn tomorrow. This penalty is just and fair and would be given to any player who engages in dirty hockey. That is, unless the player hurt is a NY Islander which would not warrent any suspension.

  102. avatar Seth says:

tough loss. i have to give them credit for fighting back but they came up short. hopefully they bounce back against a team that always gives them issues in the panthers.

  103. avatar eric nystrom says:

The only thing more upsetting about losing tonight was Bill Guerin’s mustache

    Good effort tonight..

  104. avatar Bryan says:

Penalties killed them tonight. Think sutton might deserve two games for that one. Bad hit from behind. Not intentional but bad. All teams around the isles win, bad day for the team. Man the penguins lucked out getting the three centers

  105. avatar JPinVA says:

    - Seth, you gotta be an only child.
    + Solid effort
    - Stripeshirts… Delay of Game, Hunter called while the Russian mouthbreather holds his stick and did somebody say something off color to Cindy…PENALTY!
    - the PK. Probably the worst PK in a while against a struggling Pen PP… Something had to suffer playing the champs, on the road, on the second night of a back to back.
    - Seth’s parents for letting him use their computer.
+ the Isles, for NOT GIVING UP down three. Unfortunately they were outmanned 7 to 6 all night, and when that seventh guy has stripes on… OH BOY!
    - the penguin fans for tossing back their Cindy Crosby makeup bags… that’s just being ungrateful
+ We’ll see these guys again… in our barn!
    - did I mention Seth?

  106. avatar NYIFAN says:

People can skew it all they want, but this was a poor performance tonight.

  107. avatar James says:

The bad call on Okposo changed the game. The Islanders were all over the Pens at that point, its just a shame the officials consistently every single night are now having huge impacts in so many NHL games.

There is no excuse for it

  108. avatar TimQ says:

    Prediction: 2 games

  109. avatar Strummer's Army says:

+ I didn’t have to listen to the idiot Pens announcers tonight with that guy who says all the stupid things like “Elvis has just left the building”. OK not sure what that has to do with anything fella but someone is paying you for it.

Sydney is one of the biggest whiners I’ve ever seen, it’s funny he lives with Lemuiex because he was the other one.

I hate that the NHL officials call the game differently for different players. What is a penalty on Sim should be a penalty on Crosby.

I’d like to note that no one here is freaking out on Roloson, talking about how he sucks, they wish he was dead, injured forever, traded, worst goalie in history etc because he gave up 5 goals. Roloson is a fine goalie and so is Ricky, the only difference is some “fans” hate Rick for some reason and don’t see what the rest of the hockey world does. If Rick gave up 5 certain “fans” would have exploded all over this site with their hate.

Not like Okposo to not finish so many chances. He will in the future. Hopefully seeing Malkin and Crosby have big nights will light a fire in Tavares and Okposo’s bellys.

Sutton does not deserve a suspension. If Pronger was not suspended for his hit on JT, if Jovo only got 2 for his hit on JT, if Phaneuf got nada for his hit on Kyle, if Mattau only got 2 for his hit on Nielsen then Sutton gets nada for tonight.

IF he does miss time it just illustrates why the Isles need those other two big, mean, skilled d-men.

  110. avatar James says:

I thought at first it was a poor performance yes, but they came back and fought there way back. I am proud of the effort, but the way the Pens got the lead back, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

  111. avatar JP says:

Another entertaining game that unfortunately ended up in a loss, but I’ll also take the moral victory. The Isles show a lot of heart coming back on the road against the defending Stanley Cup Champs but the Pens had too much star power tonight.

Nice to see Park finally get a goal (and it counts!) and Meyer get his first as well. (even though it sounded like the PA announcer called him Freddy “mayor”)

On a side note, what’s up with Dan Marouelli? He has a decent rep but has really blown some calls over the last 2 games. You would think he would give Roloson a break after costing the Isles a goal yesterday, and he didn’t call the obvious penalty on Sutton. What gives?

Isles will come back against FLA on Thursday. Let’s go Islanders!

  112. avatar Staten Islander says:

They played a superior team tough, got behind, and came back. Lets just move on and beat the Panthers Thursday night

  113. avatar Ken says:

No suspension. That hit might not be a penalty if he doesn’t hit the dasher with his face.

  114. avatar AJAX says:

    Sutton will get 5 games

  115. avatar isles316 says:

Campbell will suspend Sutton for 2 games. That’s my prediction. I’m convinced Campbell isn’t the man for that job and that he might have it in for the Islanders.

  116. avatar Ben says:

unfortunately i thinks sutts will get at least a couple game suspension. i certainly dont think he intended to injure dupis, but the league is trying to crack down on these hits from behind and i dont see him walking away without a suspension.

  117. avatar eric says:

no suspension, but it is the islanders and we all know how that goes .

  118. avatar Benjamin A. says:

I think it is fairly clear that Sutton’s intentions were to throw a clean hit, and the only reason it was dirty and Dupuis got hurt was the angle that he turned towards the boards. I think the league will see that, and give Sutton no more than two games….unless our friend Mr. Campbell gets involved.

  119. avatar Anthony Yampol says:

This is more of a moral victory than any OT Loss for the Isles. Great effort to come back.

Sutton will, and should get 2 games for his hit, no matter how clean his record is. That is a dangerous play, you have to know when you can shove a guy with a crosscheck, and that is not the situation. I love the guy to death, bu the needs to sit a few, and I think he knows it. Hopefully we hear about him calling Dupuis up to apologize.

  120. avatar BC says:

crosby is such a little punk i cant take it, yet no one even attempts to put a body on him. no other team has any problem knocking down jt. just more proof we need some backup for the young guns. and did rupp really think he was going to fight hillen? what a loser!

  121. avatar Viper says:

Tough loss, great effort. Lots was learned from this game. JT is playing softer of late then earlier on, as he knows he has to look after himself. At a crucial time in his development, there is no greater need then now for a big game hunter to clean some clocks and create some room.

  122. avatar IslesinOside says:

No disgust here. These dogs can hunt!!!!

BTW….I love Billy but I am convinced he is trying out for a 1970′s porno movie with that Stache!!! Chicka baum baum!

  123. avatar Eric Cup says:

Let’s be realistic here. If that was one of our guys taking that hit from behind, we’d be screaming bloody murder for a big suspension, no matter who did it. Andy Sutton has really become a true Islander and, as Jaffe said, he has not taken a penalty all season for one of his many hits. That being said, Colin Campbell will see the blood on the ice and Dupuis’ face as well as the post game results of the injury and, in my opinion, give Sutton 2-3 games. No one is a bigger Islander fan than me, but I will be surprised if there is no suspension – and that will hurt our team. I just hope this doesn’t slow Sutton down. He’s been awesome and a serious presence put there.

  124. avatar Bossy4president says:

If he doesn’t bleed it would have been a 2 minute boarding penalty. Should get time served with the game misconduct, but Colon is going you see all the blood and deem it a “hit to the head” and give him 5 games. Even though it was clearly just a bad unfortunate hit from behind. The league office is a joke so get ready for it.

  125. avatar raul17 says:

Since Sutton will be suspended at least a game, who will be the sixth D-man?

  126. avatar (Sim)ple says:

You can’t win them all and it was incouraging the way they fought back twice down 3 goals.

Would like to see Rolli rebound sooner rather than late. I hope he gets the start against FLA. Hold DP off until the rematch versus the Devils. DP is much more successful than Rolli against NJ.

Sutton should get 1 game for that hit, but will probably get more. Colin Campbell, a relative of Glen Campbell ?, will somehow punish Sutts as much as, if not more than, a dirty repeat offender like say, oh…. Ed Jovanoski.

If suspension occurs, do we see return of Witter or the call up Kohn?

  127. avatar Adam says:

Was that serious when someone said that we miss Nate Thompson’s presence?! Listen, nothing negative to be said about this game. Sometimes you just lose, and considering it was 3 games in 4 nights, playing on the road against crosby, malkin, and a bunch of other guys, and we came back, I call it a moral victory and look forward to florida.
Anybody who knows hockey knows that The fault lies with Dupuis. Sutton had him lined up and he ducks and turns at the last second. You could tell by the way that Sutton and the Pens reacted that they both knew it wasn’t his fault. HE shouldn’t get suspended but because of the blood I see the IDIOT giving him 2-4 games.

  128. avatar Bryan says:

Campbell has a bad history with disciplining the Islanders so I am going to predict 5 games

  129. avatar VinnyMoose says:

If he gets more than 2, I’d be livid. He should get a fine and no games, but he’ll get 2.

  130. avatar James says:

35 games. There is precedent: see, Andy Sutton plays on the same team that Chris Simon once played for. This is obviously a trend.

  131. avatar norefs says:

campbell needs to watch his step here.. we play his son in the next game.. and he is not allowed to intfere with any games that involve his son.. therefore, he should not be permitted to do anything with sutton on his own in anyway b/c it directly affects the outcome of the next game his son plays.. he should be 100% non involved in this case b/c of that… and if he is, we cry foul for him aiding his son’s team ILLEGALY.

  132. avatar uconn husky says:

    lifetime ban.

kidding a 2 or 1 game suspension i would suppose

  133. avatar BC says:

I completely agree CB that although we were not able to get any points from this game, the victory of being able to battle back from 3 goals down shows how much this team has grown in the past year. Although we were not able to complete the comeback, I was excited to see how they didn’t quit and against a team not as strong as the Penguins, comebacks like that would turn into wins.

  134. avatar StevieL says:

Hit from behind, player down for 5 minutes, puddle of Blood, game misconduct to Sutton, to a Pittsburgh Penguin, the league has to protect the players. My guess is Sutton gets 3 games. No way he walks free!
Great effort again tonight! God it is fun watching Islander hockey right now!

  135. avatar mikef says:

In true bias fashion, the all known CZAR of NHL suspensions tosses A Sutton 3 games.

CB any comments on Zack Kassian and the Devils prospect with the flying elbow?

  136. avatar Eastonhockey says:

Idk but is Tambellini rubbing off on Tavares? Stay in permiter=stay healty keep your teeth?

  137. avatar its time says:

    he hates the isles.
    andy will get a game

  138. avatar Thomas says:

I am impressed with how we fought back on the road and only lost because of a nonsense penalty called 15 seconds after Crosby clearly interfered with Hunter. The loss came down to 1 thing:

“When you give those guys time and space to make plays, they’re going to make them,” Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson(notes) said. “Especially with the skill that they have.”

I have been saying it all year but I will say it again. You have to press on the PK, and watching the Penguins killing penalties there was a distinct difference in style the only one moving arond on the final goal was Bergenheim, the other 3 just standing round..and once again I believe Park was on the ice for all of them (not counting the empty netter). Time to make the 4 PK’ers Okposo, Nielsen, Bergenheim and Comeau. (and yes I am aware Okposo was in the box for the last goal)

I’m still a happy Islander fan and hope we can build off tying a game that 4 weeks ago would have been a 6-1 loss.

And yes Campbell will suspend Sutton because he’s clearly biased.

CB I thought you overpraised Gordon a while back aying no other coach would have them at this point..I have to conceed you may just be right.

  139. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

Unfortunately, for the Isles, Sutton will get some time off without pay. Unfortunately for Dupuis and the Penguins, he got hurt. I would guess he is gonna miss time too. Seemed like his bell was rung bad.

  140. avatar Brian says:

I’d think a one or two game suspension.

  141. avatar JPinVA says:

I agree with CB on this one. Unfortunately the NHL(Colin Clarabell) will most likely try to legislate “intent”… and they will get that wrong like they usually do.
If sutton gets a few gams, maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to throw a guy like Mark Wotton a bone… or maybe add a little brains and brawn with westgarth. With guys like Hamonic, Ness and Donovan on their way they may not be around next year.

  142. avatar mrlbem says:

    Two comments:

    1. Pittsburgh did not try to exact revenge over Sutton’s hit. If one of our guys were hit like that, and we did nothing, there would be more than 100 posts here taking Garth to task for not having an enforcer in the lineup to protect our skill guys.

    2. It would be nice to make the playoffs, but it would be even nicer to get another top 5 pick this year to play alongside Tavares like Crosby has Malkin.

  143. avatar L.J. says:

2 game suspension. Campbell has a reputation to uphold!

  144. avatar Shawn says:

Sutton gets a 2 game suspension.

  145. avatar Swan says:

No suspension. Sutton tried to hit him as low as he could, below his head.

  146. avatar Jzimm says:

Personally, I think it was a bad hit, but I don’t think it was worse than the one that Mike Richards laid on David Booth. This was not predatory, but I do think that it’s possible Sutton could have let up a bit. I’d say 2 games sounds about right.

  147. avatar Jeff Kuntz says:

The title of the NHL.com article describing the game tonight is “Dynamic duo sinks Islanders”..

At first I thought they were talking about the refs..

  148. avatar Swan says:

Silly to blame Park in this game. Someone is not paying attention. Park was on the ice for the first two PP goals, but one was a 5 on 3 and the second was more the fault of Bergenheim.

Park was one of the better Islanders last night. He was +2 to lead the Team and scored the tying goal. Bigger goats would be Okposo, Sutton and Bergenheim.

Okposo did not finish his breakaway chances, was a bit of a defensive liability in this game and committed the crucial penalty (ticky tack call). Sutton was on the ice for all 5 of the Pit goals, not including the EN. Bergenheim was on the ice for two of the PP goals and left the goal scorer in both of them. Thought all of them had less than ideal games tonight.

  149. avatar Islesin2010 says:

One game where two very skillful players did what they know how to do, and that is dominate with their skill, nothing more needed to be said. Another great effort from the boys in orange and blue, and once again it seemed like the ice was slightly tilted thanks to the men in stripes, no respect for the Isles and wayyyy too much for Crosby and the Pens.

Still gotta give him his credit, Sidney Crosby is the best complete hockey player in today’s game, and for the record, just because he whines doesn’t take the blame off the officials NEVER calling him for penalties. Not more than 30 seconds before KO’s penalty in the third there was a trip by Crosby right inside the Isles blueline that went un-called, total BS.

I am rather saddened that another Seth has tarnished my name by spreading that garbage on here :) shame shame

  150. avatar jonsson3 says:

That’s OK. If Sutts is suspended a couple of games we can call up Dustin Kohn and see what he can do for a couple games. Its rebuilding time anyway, we get a little look at the future.
    GO ISLES!!

  151. Sutton definitely will get suspended. I predict 5 games minimum… 0 for the hit, 5 for being an Islander +more because Campbell is the worst disciplinarian ever. Sutton’s hit was unfortunate and irresponsible, but not malicious. How many boarding majors get called during the year without suspensions dolled out? This is an honest question.

The game was good enough. Sutton put the nail in the coffin for the Isles, though. Despite Crosby’s six points, I still have no respect for him as a player (not since I watched him go third man in on a fight last season while throwing punches to a player’s “below the belt”).

  152. avatar Magnus says:

If Sutton get a suspension who will be called up from Bridgeport? Kohn, Katic or Flood?

  153. avatar Jim Clark says:

Bad game. It happens. Go get ‘em Thursday.

  154. avatar Healy says:

I never believed the “Crying Crosby” or “Cindy” taunts as I think Crosby is a great player and I personally only saw him flip out once. But tonight he certainly didn’t help that image by crying over Park’s contact (well before the goal, why don’t you back check Cindy?!) And then by shoving Hunter down out of the play. He looked like a spoiled baby and the refs didn’t call anything which is apparently par for the course. I am glad Park and Weight told him to zip it.

  155. avatar Frank nyc says:

I hope Sutton does not get suspended, but knowing the leagues standing on the NY Islanders we can expect a league record suspension of 300 games. But seriously no further suspension is needed he got a game misconduct and that 5 min major killed the Isles chances of making a comeback down by only one goal. Plus Dupuis was a friend of Suttons in Minny so i doubt he meant to do that.

  156. avatar Islander86 says:

    Roloson, awful game.
At least two goals are on him.

  157. avatar Donna says:

Sutton will get at least a 2 game suspension, it was a bad hit. Any more than 2 games and its because he’s an Islander.
good game overall, hope team is not deflated, and can win one against Fla at home. DP in net????

  158. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Refs are terrible and inconsistent just like Soupy who will probably give a 2-game suspension. If anything, I feel only a 1-game suspension is warranted if any at all. Sutton is not a dirty player so I don’t see a need to suspend him just because the guy got cut. I always felt that was a stupid way to assess high-stick penalties as well.

As for the game, I liked the fight in the team and you can’t win them all. Just go beat Florida now!

  159. avatar ny711ot says:

If anything Sutton should be happy he didn’t kill him. I love the way he is playing and I understand jaffes defense, but its another indication that a tragedy is about to happen in the league unless respect all the way around is restored.

  160. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

It definately was right calling the Major but i dont think Sutton meant that. I dont think he gets suspended for it.

Nice job for isles fighting back in game. Poor KO just got unlucky, I think Johnson just got lucky making those saves on him.

and yes, roloson did have off night. good thing we have DP back.

  161. avatar CJCB says:

I love the fighting and all the rough stuff in the league. To me this hit is on Dupuis, guys used to go into the boards sideways always realizing that a hit might be coming. New rules = new style of freedom that you can do anything and not have to worry. Does this guy not know he is playing with guys 80lbs heavier than he is? You cant play the game at the speed it is played and not expect stuff like this to happen. I think they lamed up the NHL to much already, whats next no hitting? When will the new players learn to protect themselves and not rely on the rules for protection. No suspeneion what Sutton did should not be against the rules or change them to no hitting along the boards!!

  162. avatar Eric N. says:

Shouldn’t be any suspension IMO. Didn’t look intentional.
Dupuis turned and Sutton didn’t have time to pull up. Still we are
talking Campbell and the Isles so I’ll be surprised
if Sutton doesn’t get 2 games.

  163. avatar Brian in VA says:

Isles are indeed having a good year… They have me debating over getting center ice again… Although channelsurfing.net has the games but I rather get the games on my Vizio… As for Sutton, I’d say he should get 0-2 games but knowing Campbell he’ll get 10. The NHL needs the Pens to win hence the garbage penalties… The Isles fight every game though so lets get at least 2/3 pts this week.

  164. avatar Jethro09 says:

Sutton will be suspended and the suspension will be disproportionate to the offense. Colin Campbell always hits Isles’ players with excessive suspensions. Remember Thomas Pock?

That being said, I do think that Sutton should be suspended, but for no more than a game or two at most. Those types of hits are dangerous and the excuse that “he turned his back at the last second” is getting old and tired. While there was no intent to injure, players need to have more control over their own bodies when they hit people. Just my two cents.

  165. avatar Rich says:

Sutton should be gone for 5 games. Someone is really going to get hurt and the league has to stop it. It was not malicious, but you have to be responsible. Anyway, nice effort by the boys.

  166. avatar Brian G says:

If Sutton gets suspended its BS – Dupius put himself in a vulnerable position …at the same time Sutton thought he was going to turn sideways again before he hit him…he was NOT going after him…he was trying to make a hockey play…all of his hits are always clean…he seems to use timing with all of his hits…but may have mistimed the hit last night….he also seemed to be remorseful toward Dupius before he left the ice.

  167. avatar Gutty34 says:

Colin Campbell has released this statement this morning in conjunction with the NHL:

I have been watching hockey, coaching and playing my whole life. I never thought I would live to see the day when a player defies all logic and care for another players safety and crushes his face and head into the boards with such force and intent to kill. Thats right hockey fans I said it….kill another player. I am therefore left with no alternative but to sentence Andy Sutton to death. Not by legal injection. That would be too easy and not painful enough for all of Isles country to endure. I propose we bring in every player over 6 4′ 225 and they continuosly board andy to death. I think this will deter the next player who decides to take another players life with their own bare hands. Did I mention my son plays for Florida….they play the isles next and they are both fighting for a playoff spot?? This will definately give him…uh florida a better chance now on THursday. Damn. How do I delete ….didnt mean to write this. Damn computers.

  168. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Anything over 2 games would be ridiculous.

  169. avatar Original Rob says:

I don’t think Sutton intended to hurt Dupuis, but he should be given a 2-game suspension b/c it was a dangerous hit and he did have some time to back off of the hit.

On another note, Kyle Okposo sure pulled a great Claude Lapointe impression last night – 3 breakaways and no goals. Nobody did that better than Claudie!

  170. avatar j says:

should be no games because sutton has no prior record, anyone else would probably get 2 games but campbell will give sutts 5 games because that will be 1 of those headshots theyre cracking down on.

CB, why isn’t there a push from the players’ union or the GM’s to try and standardize the supplimental punishments? this blackbox approach makes the league look bad time and time again yet no one seems to be calling for a change. Shouldn’t x = y in these situations?

  171. avatar hyedray says:

The hit looks bad, but Sutton is no goon. While he is responsible, you can see Dupuis lowered himself, and turned as Sutton was coming in. Because of that the hit came lower and harder, and put Dupuis’ face first into the top edge of the boards—or so it appears.

I would hope that there would be no suspension—but we are talking Blue and Orange here. Of course there will be a 5 game suspension. What better way to end the Islanders recent resurgence? The NHL is and always seems to be anti-Islanders. Bottom line—if Phaneuf can do what he did to Okposo in a pre-season game and not get anything, why would any Isles fan believe that Sutton would get off free?

Nope—my guess is 5 games. He is, after all, an Islander.

  172. avatar Bob Beers says:

I know I have no way of proving this, and hindsight is 20/20, but as soon as I saw Crosby whining to the officials about having been bumped behind the play (Wow – Must have been the first time that has ever happened in the history of the National Hockey League) on the rush that led to the Park goal and yapping at the NYI bench (LOL – What a tough guy running his mouth behind the safety of a pane of plexiglass), I knew the NYI were going to lose. When you watch a team for nearly three decades you kind of develop a sixth sense about these things. Sure enough it was no surprise to see Crosby get away with throwing Hunter to the ice shortly thereafter, only to be followed by a “ticky-tack penalty call” on KO. Don’t get me wrong, the shoddy officiating was NOT the reason the NYI lost the game. It just sickens me to see whiny superstars like Crosby constantly get their way with the zebras. Lemieux and Messier were like that. But you never saw such antics from true captains like Sakic and Yzerman.

  173. avatar Chris TMC says:

152 Jim Clark (152): This was not what I would call a bad game at all, it was just a loss to the defending stanley cup champions. I think the Islanders showed a lot of heart in this game, and for me its just tough to call a game where the isles battle back from a three-goal defecit and tie it up (despite some bafflingly stupid, biased calls) a “bad game.”

  174. avatar Priest says:

I think Sutton will get around 2 games. But really it depends on what the NHL decides they are “cracking down” on this week. Could go anywhere from a slap on the wrist to 5 games. Personally I would give a game. Why? Because the game misconduct was deserved and came so late in the game. Earlier in the game, I’d say time served.

  175. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

After an intentional repeated offense elbow JovoCOP got a two game suspension. Anything more than 1 game for a nonmalicious first offense is a joke. But then again Malkin boarded Mitchell this weekend from behind and escaped suspension. Lets see if Sutton can have the same good fortune.

  176. avatar UIF says:

After seeing Pock get a 5-game suspension for something that everyone before and since has gotten 2 games for, nothing will surprise me this time around.

  177. avatar billy says:

didnt see the game or the hit, but great moxy for us to battle back. with all the leads we’ve blown, i thought we deserved a win.

oh well, hopefully red hot ricky goes tomorrow

  178. avatar Nova Scotia Isles Fan says:

Without wanting to throw AS under the bus, I think that anything less than 2 games would fail to send any kind of message, first time offender or no. Anything more than 2 is another in a long line of cases where the Islanders get screwed by the League.

  179. avatar Tony says:

I admit I turned the game off after it was 3-0. The Pens level of play was noticeably a stratoshpere above the teams the Isles have been playing during this hot streak.

As for Sutton, of course he should get no suspension but I’d bet my life he does get one.

  180. avatar Islander505 says:

    Sutton’s gonna get 5 games….Bank it.

  181. avatar Billymac says:

Unfortunate incident in last night’s game. Sutts has been extremely clean all year long. He had no intent to hurt Dupuis. However, this is the type of call, intentional or not, that the NHL needs to crackdown on. He needs to be suspended for 2 games. Again, this is not because Colin Campbell hates the Isles, but because it needs to happen.

I know Campbell is inconsistent, and I know I’m not the only critic of his. The NHL needs to have the competition committee come up with a schedule of suspensions, so that it is consistent. Then, if there looks like there is intent, Mr. Inconsistent can step in and levy further penalties…

  182. avatar Bobby says:

I say 4 games. Resulted in an injury to the head from finishing a check from behind.

  183. avatar beatlebailey says:

3 games. Shouldnt be more because this is out of character for him and Andy admitted it was a bad hit.

  184. avatar Brett says:

just a heads up, Billys moustache isnt by choice, at the end of every practice the team had a shootout contest, the last player to score loses and has to do something. Even the coaches play and have lost. The loser has to do things like wash other players vehicles, be waterboy at the next practice, and grow a moustache for a month. Its psrt id Dans strstegy to have a team that gets along and has fun, and by his record since he took over, it looks like it works.

  185. avatar Rich says:

CB, just watched the video. I was away from town for both the Devils and Pens game, unfortunately. I’m a fan of Sutton’s, and of course our team. However, that hit by Sutton was not legal and was “from behind” while the opposing play was “in a vulnerable position.”
I’m just getting caught up on the game events and have to say that Andy’s not that type of player, he shouldn’t be suspended for any length of time greater than the misconduct he drew during the game.

  186. avatar geduffer says:

There should not be ANY suspension on the hit. This was a first for Sutton. It was the first penalty from a hit of Sutton’s this season (according to the Jaff.) Since the Isles play Campbell’s son next, he should not be the one issuing any suspension in this case. That said, since Campbell has neither integrity nor competence I realize that anything can happen. The only thing sadder than that miserable excuse for a “hockey person” is that the commissioner actually thinks that Campbell is “great”. Pathetic.

  187. avatar JohnnyC. says:

    Nate Thompson put on waivers

  188. avatar steve says:

even the defending champs can blow a 3 goal lead. good effort. KO, figure out those breakaways. that stuff happens.
dont know how you can make a decision on sutton, based on how uneven the NHL has been all season. they actually pay those refs to owrk that game. some weak calls.

  189. avatar eric nystrom says:

If Sutton gets suspended, who comes up to replace him?

  190. avatar RobC says:

Sutton is an Islander so he will not get any respect. I think we shouldn’t be shocked if he gets 5 games. I think he doesn’t deserve it but, for arguments sake, if he must be suspended, he shouldn’t get more than 2 games. Too bad we’re the Isles and the league will dis us again. Don’t be surprised, fellow Islanders.

  191. avatar Islander says:

Sutton deserved 5 games, lucky to get only two. That Penguin player’s face was pulverized. This type play is not acceptable for any team.

  192. avatar pete says:

There was no intent to injure.

    Incinsistent Colin Camble the Clown.
No ryhme or reason to his suspensions…except if your Crosby or Malkin.
