Maybe the NHL’s Front Office is starting to like us again.
-
I’ll trade that for someone on the Isles punching him in the face when he hit JT
-
Fair enough. I don’t think JT missed a shift. It probably hurt a ton but a few tylenol makes it all better. Stay tough kid – we’ll have some muscle for you sooner than later (hopefully).
-
Good!
-
Well, I’m not the comish, but two games and the $160K seems fair enough. JT didn’t miss the remainder of the game and hopefully he won’t miss tomorrow’s tilt at the barn as a result of the cheap shot.
-
Makes it all the worse that we didn’t lift a finger in retaliation.
-
Glad to see he got suspended but 2 games is not enough, If I were a player and I only got 2 games for that I’d feel like I got away with it.
-
Dam, that’s one hell of an expensive elbow!!
-
They got one right!
-
The right call, about time
-
I still can’t believe Carkner was never suspended.
-
Yeah, Carkner’s incident was equivalent to this… possibly even worse because Jackman was injured. However, I am not complaining about this incident. Good to hear the NHL isn’t toying with us.
-
P.S… the NHL might not be toying with us, but the teams in it definitely are. Matt Martin can’t come soon enough.
-
CB- clearly deserved, as he left his skates. glad JT only got his bell rung, and nothing more then that. learning experience. would having an ” enforcer” have changed that hit,or would it have resulted in a Coyote getting pulverized later in the game as a message for the next time. the players have a chance over the course of the game to send a message with a borderline hit of their own.
-
Shoulda been 5!
-
Colon finally did something right!
-
With the respect that we get from the NHL office i.e(Campbell) I’ll take the two game’s. I said to my son the other night after the hit he should get at two game’s anything more would be a suprise. So Campbell get’s one out three this season.
Ko in pre-season, Jackman by Carkner, and this one on JT… -
Not enough!!! Doesn’t Jovo have a history already? Isn’t that supposed to add to the penalty?
3 games minimum. 5 games is what I expected.
That actually take the .59 cents? That is too funny.
-
If the NHL is going to charge prices of $75, $100, $200, etc., then they’d better eliminate these cheap hits to the head.
People pay those prices to see star players, not the 3rd and 4th liners. Every time a clown like Jovo cop attempts to take out a star player with a cheap hit to the head he devalues VERY EXPENSIVE tickets.
-
Should have at least been 4.
The great Thomas Pock was suspended for 5 games for his elbow to Shannon (no damage done).
Why does Jovo only get 2?
Unless…
Infraction against a future NHL Star = +5 games
Infraction against the NYI = -3 games -
If it was Witt giving the elbow he’d be suspended indefinitely.
-
The money should go to jt. Then he can buy an expensive car with a bumber sticker thanking him
-
It’s better than nothing.
-
Happy to read about the suspension and glad to hear Campbell didn’t come out and say there was no contact to the head (a la Mottau’s hit on Nielsen last season)!
-
….sorry, but if someone was to pull that crap with Crosby, Gretzky, etc, they would be getting a face full of fist for that dirty play. 2 games? I say 4, but he should have got his ass beat for that.
The Islanders are soft. Jovo should have been mauled. No one to answer the bell. It is a glaring need.
-
The right call. His previous 2 game suspension was on a hit in my opinion that was worse or more vicious. Good job by the NHL.
-
The thing that always bugs me about these suspensions is that it’s now OTHER teams that benefit from his absence. What if the Coyotes’ next two games were against, say, Montreal and Atlanta? Two teams we’re battling for the playoffs. Taveras gets a hit in the head, and these other teams get the benefit of not having to face Jovanovski — an All-Star just two years ago. Given the hard segregation of the playoffs between East and West, maybe when a player is suspended, those games should only be in his own conference. So if the Coyotes’ next game is against the Flyers, he can play. But if the game after that is against the Avs, he sits. Yes, the Avs get a benefit they didn’t really deserve, but the Coyotes now have to face a team that THEY are battling with, sans their top D-man.
-
…at least they included the 59 cents.
-
Good, but I guess the goal was retaliation
-
Good. Now let’s find someone to protect the young guys ON the ice.
-
The Islanders have some grit that can play 4th line minutes in Bridgeport.
-
I dunno, but I think 2 games is BS for that hit.
Especially when you consider how on the article on nhl.com it says something along the lines of Jovo is now considered a repeat offender under the cba since he was suspended for 2 games back in December.
We haven’t reached the middle of January yet and its the 2nd suspension!
I agree with whomever said that if it was Witt giving a hit like that he’d be suspended indefinetly.
-
2 games would be OK if it was a first offense…but how can he get the same amount of time for a second offense as he did for his first? Another bad job by the NHL.
-
this is the biggest impact tavares has had in about 15 games
-
better then nothing i suppose…
-
The only thing fans should whine about is the lack of a response on the ice. Is 2 games not enough, 4 too much? Who cares. Take care of it on the ice.
-
What a joke. Witt got 5 games for a similar hit on Hagman. Actually, it wasn’t as bad as Jovo’s was. Maybe the hit will wake up The Superstar. Good thing Snow got us an enforcer to protect said Superstar.
Wait a minute………..
-
At least a message was sent that this action is not acceptable.
-
A 2 game suspension, scoring a goal on the delayed call, netting 2 more because no one took his place in the box, and (most importantly) 2 points. I think that is sufficent.
But it is good to know that if Colin Campbell were to leave his job a lot of people on this board can take over.
-
An outrage. An example of complete disregard by the league office of their own criteria for deciding on suspensions that was expressly stated during past instances where their judgement was questioned. First and foremost – it was a ‘head shot’ – something the league has said they will go to great lengths to discourage with stiff penalties. Second, there was obvious intent to injure. It was deliberate, targeted, and applied with maximun force. Third (and this was specifically cited in the infamous Chris Simon stick swing), the offender has a past history of similar offenses. In fact, he was suspended as recently as 30 days ago for… wait for it… a FOREARM TO THE HEAD of Minnesota’s Andrew Ebbett, for which he received… wait for it… a TWO GAME SUSPENSION. Just THIRTY DAYS ago!!!
The suspension was “fair? It was “about right”? Are you kidding me?
-
Is two games considered cracking down on hits to the head? Glad he got a suspension, but come on already that stuff has got to stop!
-
Glad Jovo got something. Now if only Phaneuf got his comeuppance then all would be right with the world.
BTW on the subject of us finally getting some modicum of justice, remember how we all griped (justifiably) about Schremp’s ‘baseball’ goal not even getting mentioned on ESPN? It was the #1 play of the week for last week for NHL on VS. Now that’s more like it.
-
good a suspension finally went in the Isles favor.
-
Not enough….should’ve been 5
Jovo’s a dirtbag, and a repeat offender….and the league knows this! The Islanders need someone to step up and fight……or………take a cheapshot at the other teams #1 guy…
ENOUGH ALREADY!
-
Maybe Snow will wake up and get someone on this roster with toughness that would respond to that on the ice.
-
We’ve all said this day would come and it has. Someone was going to take liberties with the young kids, I can’t for the life of me understand why Snow allowed this.
You got wimps all over this squad, I just hope the next incident isn’t more serious. God forbid Tavares gets a concussion from a hit from behind or something like that, and it becomes a larger issue.
-
This kind of stuff would not happen if the morons who run this league would let the players enforce the rules. Do you honestly think guys like Mike Richards, Tuomo Ruutu, and others would have got away with these dirty hits 20 years ago? I don’t think so! Gary Bettman and everyone connected to him has to go! A Canadian should be running this league, preferably a western Canadian!
Hey, SNOW, wake up and get an enforcer before all your young talent for rebuilding the franchise is on the IR!
-
I think the guy deserved 5 games and that his two game salary should be donated to me so I could take 1.5 years off work. I really enjoy tough hockey players but hate cheap/dirty hockey players like JOvo.
-
i loved it when our enforcer came on the ice and beat the hell out of jovo for taken a wack at J.T….oh wait that was just a dream snow didnt think we needed one..dope
-
Also, Snow has received enough “warnings” from God. He’s gotten very lucky that Okposo, Nielsen’s, Tavares careers haven’t been ended yet. Teams with toughness don’t have these cheap shots taken at them. Snow has to wake up and toughen up this roster.
-
its open season on JT, and his stats show it. the Islanders are hands down the softest team i have ever seen in my life.
-
It was a wierd play because JT got a cheap elbow went down and then KO scored. He and Blake started to celebrate and then they noticed he was down and hurt. I do not think anyone really knew what happened to him and by then Jovanoski was kicked out of the game so it was a little difficult to get to him. Just remember the incident and the next time we play them get back at him. By the way yes JT did not get hurt but I thought it was all about the intent.
-
The NHL response is acceptable here(IMO), but I have to agree with everybody else here. The team’s response to BOTH hits on JT should be unacceptable TO THEM.
Last year when somebody would look at Weight the wrong way Guerin would be in their face. It’s no coincidence that guy skated with the cup last year.
Hunter responded for the Nielsen hit. Bergy responded in Buffalo. I’m a little disappointed in my favorite current Islander… too preoccupied celebrating his goal to even acknowledge his fallen teammate. No wonder they have such a hard time deciding who’s gonna get the “C” each year.
(102) -
I don’t think the Isles are set up to have a enforcer. They need to be a 4 line rolling team. The Rechliz experiment didn’t work.
Instead of bringing in a guy like Ivanans on the Kings (who has 0 points and most kings fans hate) the Isles need to look to current players like Sutton, Witt, Thompson, Jackman and I think Hunter to start to provide the proper response to our young kids getting thrown around.
-
I agree that we don’t necessarily need a goon. This team just really needs to learn how to stick up for themselves. Remember little guys like Blake, Bates & even Kaspar? Not the biggest guys in the world, but they knew how to stand up for themselves. Play with some angry fire boys.
-
Well, we may not need to get a 3 minute a game/one dimentional fighter, but we need to get bigger and tougher. Team toughness is a key element to winning teams.
-
They should suspend Snow and Gordon for not having anyone to go after the guy for that blantant elbow!
-
Should have got at least 5 games.
-
at least there’s a suspension. In that respect the home office finally suspended one of our opponents. should have been 5 though, repeat offender.
-
CB: Seriously, when will Garth get us a heavyweight to protect the youngsters? If the honest answer is “next off season”,Im ok with that. But that’s the latest it has to happen. We need an real deal enforcer by the start of the 2010/11 season, don’t you agree?
-
Jovanovski should be forced to sit in the stands at NCVMC for two games and endure the audio/visual assault us fans have to face.
Sign Goldy Goldthorpe!
-
#3 (Keith) – you said it right. Scoring the goal during the delayed penalty was great but why no one even approached Jovo after it happened made me sick.
-
With Sutton hitting on the back end and Martin hitting on the front end, this could still be an interesting year.
-
Two games is not enough.
I remember when Dale Hunter hit Turgeon he’s got suspended for 30 games. And like in this case it was a deliberate unnecessary hit in the head.
I think league is in power to stop hits like this. -
Elbows to the head are so dangerous.anyone who plays hockey knows the hard plastic shell of the elbow pad makes them lethal weapons when you get nailed in the head.
Well Colin Campbell finally did something in the islanders favor. I guess if the Isles aren’t going to protect the #1 overall pick the league office just might.
Still think it should have been at least 4 games and someone should have dropped the mits and thrown down with Jovo.
-
#55 if Kings fans hate Ivanans which i will dispute any day of the week it is only because they have a better more entertaining 3 min a night Enforcer coming through the wings named Kevin Westgarth! I have never heard of an Enforcer not being a fan favorite except here on the island. I think the Islanders need to seperate themselves a little more from the iceworks youth leagues and realize they are playing in a “MENS” league. You might not need one in a iceworks league but you need one in the NHL!!
-
Bring back Aaron Asham and stick him on Tavares’ wing. Or pry Boogaard and/or Clutterbuck from the Wild. At the least, call up Mike Haley and let him take a shift on the 4th line, and occasionally with Tavares. It really is time for this team to toughen up.
-
Just thinking out loud:
Suppose the player who gets cheap-shotted receives half the money forfeited by the guilty player.
In this case half the money would go into the special fund and JT gets roughly $79,000 for the elbow in the kisser!
I also like a punishment that when someone is cheap-shotted and the receiving player losses ice time/games recovering then the guilty player sits until the other player returns. Wonder if the game would change for players like Pheneuf and Pronger?
-
guys the day of the true heavyweight that cannot skate is gone. look at brashear. he is a total waste. he cant find a fight and it is like playing shorthanded when he gets a shift. there is not enough fighting anymore to waste a roster spot on someone like brashear. that needed to be dealt with by someone on the team now. someone cheap shots our star, we take a run at theirs. simple as that.
-
So the first Jovo instance was 2 games and the second instance was 2 games. I thought the idea of repeat offender status was that each instance would be punished more harshly? Or do you become a repeat offender only on your third offence by which time you were already a repeat offender because you committed a suspendable offense twice before?
-
NHL is not interested in cracking down this type of behavior. That, to me, is perfect example of intend to injure. This is not a split second decision in an open-ice hit. Tavares was not even near him, when Jovo leaned out with his elbow.
-
we should’ve taken a run at mueller..eye for an eye.
-
FWIW let’s also not forget that this organization was embarassed by Chris Simon for both years that he was here so they may be a bit gun shy to have a thug.
Although I must say that with him riding shotgun even Yashin seemed to play harder likely because of a greater sense of ease and protection so the argument could go both ways but it may not be so cut and dry.
The preferable thing is a Dustin Byfuglien/Ben Eager-type player who can do little things but can also go toe-to-toe; the problem is these guys almost as rare pure goal scorers.
-
Why does everyone equate a enforcer as a 3 minute player ? Why not get a 4th line that checks , that can fight , play defense and score a goal every now and again. What have Park, Thompson and SIm really done. We are 2nd to last on the PK so we can t tab the first two as penalty kill specialists. Sim has socred a few goals but he is even annoying me at this point. Refs don t like him and how many times can he spray ice at the opposing goalie. Even annoying agitators like Avery and Tucker, whom i despise would back up their annoyingness by dropping the gloves. The looking around at the refs with the what did i do face grew old 10 games ago , now its just redundant. Nate stats 1 GOAL – 14 and Park 3 GOALS and minus 21. Are you kidding me ? Replaces these guys with a line that opponents hate to face , that will hit them at every chance , and won t be intimidated and they don t have to be the best fighters , but they will not back down. This will give the kids a boost of confidence, a sense of security and above all it will sell tickets. News flash , the majority of hockey fans enjoy violence and after awhile watching the passive version of the Charleston Chiefs play old time Eddie Shore hockey gets really stagnent.
-
#41 – Right on! 2 games is a JOKE! It’s very hard to take the heirarchy of this league seriously when they talk tough about head contact and suspensions when their actions speak louder than their words. Looking a little deeper at this suspension, what is the league saying here? We all know there has been a double standard in all sports when it comes to suspensions for a long time. Penalties for illegal hits to star players are usually more severe than those to other players. Additionally, if the offender is a star player, he usually is shown some lenience as well. There has to be some uniform code of punishment that is not open to interpretation. The suspensions are supposed to be more severe for repeat offenders but, at least in this case, that has been ingnored. The message sent by the league is confusing and inconsistent. Enough already. Believe me when I say this – a serious wake-up call for the league is desperately needed.
-
JTorBust – And just how many teams actually have “4th line that checks , that can fight , play defense and score a goal every now and again”?
You make it sound like it’s a dime a dozen out there.
Usually they are 4th liners for a reason – they can’t do all of that.
-
we. should. have. retaliated.
-
I’, all for the suspension of Joe, but I gotta wonder if Jovo would have been suspended if the hit occurred to someone other than Tavares?
Say, Sim or Thompson, or let’s just say anyone other than JT or KO?
Just a thought
-
Depends on how to retailiate. I read on Puck Prospectus the other day that the Isles are actually sixth overall in hits since the lockout. (I can’t find the team totals for this season, only individual players, but I’m willing to say they’re lower-ranked this year.) And scoring all those PP goals is also a nice way to make ‘em pay… as long as you don’t just give them all back in a four-minute stretch of the third.
The real value in an enforcer is as deterrent. Teams don’t hack at Gaborik or Parise because they don’t want Georges Laraque or Andrew Peters punching them in the head. I mean, how many times did Gillies really have to fight? One of my favorite Isles stats of all-time – Clark Gillies never accumulated 100 or more PIM in a single season. He didn’t have to. And any of the team would step up to the plate for their teammates.
-
The hits JT has been the ricipient of have been dangerous and scary at times. Garth, get ur head out ur corn hole, and get this kid some protection or he might get hurt or if not he won’t resign to a team who doesn’t care about him.
-
The Isles are the wimpiest, softest team in the league. I’m sure Tavares isn’t too happy knowing no one has his back. It’ll be a miracle if JT does not end the season on a stretcher.
Jovo is a cementhead cheapshot artist. Him getting only a 2-game ban (which will be reduced to one game after the inevitable appeal) is a joke, one that has and will be on the organization as long as Colin C. doles out the punishment. If it was an Islander throwing the elbow, the suspension would have been 5 games minimum, but we all know that.
-
#70 the day of the true heavyweight that cannot skate are gone look at Brashear? Are u kidding me , Brashear is done not because he is a true heavyweight that cant skate but because like Weight he is OLD!!! Bring up the current crop of younger heavies next time u imply they r done? Ask Godard, Parros, Boogaard, Cote, Peters, Leblond, Orr, McGratten, Thorton, Ivanans, Hordichuk, Koci, Shelly, Belak, Laraque, Scott, Macintyre, etc, etc ,etc to name a few. I would take anyone of these guys than the guys we have on our 4th line. Our 4th line cant score and they cant fight..
-
A hit to the head and a repeat offender = 5 games. What a joke, wish the isles just could have handled it on the ice.
-
glad to see the nhl finally live up to its mostly empty words and suspend someone for a “head” shot.

Good. Cheap shot. Glad he got suspended.
