KENNY JONSSON ATTENDING NYI GAME TONIGHT
Just a friendly visit with his former NHL club

by admin on January 12th, 2010 at 10:34 am

9:30 am - KJ is in town to watch the Red Wings take on the Islanders. He is expected to visit with his old club at the morning skate and will be highlighted on the scoreboard during the game. As far as I know, this is Kenny’s first visit to the Coliseum since he left the Islanders to return home to Sweden. With Chris Osgood also around, it’s going to feel like 2002.

Tell him to have a sit down with Gervais

  2. avatar Lenny says:

What a great Islander. Let’s get him laced up and take a few shifts!!!!

  3. they should sign him and then waive gervais. lol

  4. avatar Brian G says:

suit him up tonight – he is one of the most underrated Islanders of all time…he needs a standing O

  5. avatar jeff says:

KJ was a great Islander. One of the best D-Men we ever had. Wish he stayed longer.

  6. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Just bring back Adrian Aucoin and we will be set. I will be attending with my “older” school home white Aucoin jersey. Welcome home Kenny. I think most people didn’t realize how good you really were till you left…

  7. avatar UIF says:

Oh man, I was supposed to go tonight, too, but can’t make it. Oh well, I’ll give Jonsson a standing O from home. One of the best I’ve seen with respect to positioning and stick placement.

  8. avatar Uconn husky says:

Let’s hope tonight is like 2002 and the barn is full and loud. Unfortuneately I doubt that but we can all hope right?

  9. avatar CrackheadTheo says:

    SIGN HIM UP!!

  10. avatar Lance79 says:

Kenny was so solid in his time here. Could you imagine him and Streit as our top pair, or how many more points Kenny would have in the more open post-lockout era with his savvy play?

  11. avatar ken says:

he should do a ceremonial puck drop. I would assume he would drop the puck in perfect position.

ive only seen him beaten by a stickhandler one time in my life (sergei samsonov).

  12. avatar Examiner says:

Visiting with his old team? Will he know anyone other than Wang, Snow, and Hunter?

  13. avatar valentino says:

Sign KJ for the remainder of the season….he will automatically become our # 2 D man behind streit

  14. avatar Will C. says:

So, feels like 2002? Did CB just call playoffs?!?

  15. avatar AwesomeWorld says:

Most underrated D of all time…..

  16. avatar bergie20 says:

love kj. one of the best d-men this franchise has ever had. please jump on the ice for us tonight kenny!

  17. avatar Anthony says:

What a very humble person he was as and Islander, and boy could he move the puck out of his own end. Some of the current defenseman could learn a lot from KY.

  18. avatar Bring back Nyles says:

Will Jorgen be there with him?

  19. avatar Brian G says:

I agree with #11…he should do a ceremonial puck drop

  20. avatar JayK says:

    Examiner — #12 — yes, DP.

  21. avatar beatlebailey says:

kj aucoin and hammer – roman hamrilik…that was a pretty good top 3 on D

  22. avatar mm30 says:

I don’t like to use caps but when it comes to KJ…THE BEST ISLANDERS DEFENSEMAN OF THE LAST 20 YEARS.

He was often the lone bright spot on many dark nights.

  23. avatar Metalcoconut says:

I she coming to sign an offer sheet? We can dream…

  24. avatar Metalcoconut says:

ha ha…that was supposed to be he…coughing and typing don’t mix.

  25. avatar Chris TMC says:

We all love you, Kenny! And GOD do we miss having a guy like you on the ice.

  26. avatar Harold C says:

#22, totally agree. To me, he’s #3 all time on the Islanders Dman list…only Potvin and Morrow are ahead of him.

  27. avatar Jimfromstjames says:

Hope he gets a standing “O” from the Isles faithful.
He should know Cairns & Webb too.

  28. avatar Brother Rat says:

Wouldn’t that be something–he retires to go to Sweden, and now that he just retired from Sweden maybe he’ll head back to the NHL? What Isles fan doesn’t love KJ….and he can still play, as he had the the best plus/minus in the World Championships last year and is only 35. I agree with Ken/#11, that they should let Kenny drop the puck to bask in the fans’ appreciation.

  29. avatar JT says:

After Potvin, best Isles d-man ever. I’d love to see him sign on for the rest of the season.

  30. avatar Chris TMC says:

    Bring back Kenny and Ziggy!
They’re just a little retired… theyre still good, theyre still good!

    :D

  31. avatar Priest says:

KJ is not just my favorite Islander of all time, he is my favorite player of all time. I was a Leafs fan until he was traded, and at the time I was young enough to just blindly switch allegances when my favorite player was traded, and I’ve stuck with the Islanders since. I always tried to model my play around him when I was younger too. I hope one day he is honoured by the team in some way, preferably a jersey retirement. He was the teams loyest and best player through a pretty dark period (IIRC, he was the only one around when they switch TO and FROM the fisherman jerseys).

  32. avatar Merrick says:

Awesome! Now I know which jersey to wear tonight, #29.

  33. avatar nightfly says:

KJ! It’ll be great to see him. I’m convinced we’d have beaten Toronto in ’02 if he hadn’t been concussed by that so-and-so Gary Roberts. (I’m not going to go near the Tucker/Peca thing, or I’ll smash my keyboard.)

  34. avatar Dan says:

It will be great to see Kenny again. It was so unfortunate that he left during the strike and never came back. I think what it would have been like had he not left and he finished his career as an Islander. Good chance his jersey would have been raised to the rafters.

  35. avatar mattyboy says:

I’m gonna be trying to get the “Suit up Kenny!” chant going all game long. Please join me. Remember, this is the only player we’ve EVER had who when asked about returning said “I’m not coming back but if I DID come back there is only one team I would ever play for.” That’s the kind of quote we NEVER hear about our beloved Islanders. And it won’t soon be forgotten. I’ll be all over him with love tonight. If I see where he’s sitting I’m gonna go over to him and strip and chuck him my KJ jersey like Mean Joe Green in that commercial. I’ve accepted that he’s retired but that doesn’t mean that I don’t think it’s a good idea to show his wife and his sons that if the 1 in a million chance ever came to fruition their husband and father would be viewed as a HERO on Long Island. ESPECIALLY now that many of the fans that were luke warm on Kenny have had the joy of watching the post KJ NYI defense for several years. How long until his son Axl is draft eligible? Hey…I think I’m gonna make that a sign.

  36. avatar Darwin says:

Looks like I gotta break out the Jonsson jersey tonight!

  37. avatar NY711ot says:

I loved Kenny Harold C but I’d have to put Stefan Persson ahead of Jonsson.

  38. avatar Rene says:

Is this the same KJ that use to fumble the puck at the blue line and get all nervous when someone was on him and lose puck? Marc-Andre Bergeron reminded me of him when MAB played for the Isles few years ago…

  39. avatar thepolishprince says:

KJ was a completely under rated D man. Solid game after game and shift after shift. I hope he gets a standing O as well.

  40. avatar James says:

Wow Rene way to break up the KJ lovefest lol, nice going

KJ was a solid defensemen and made very few mistakes.

  41. avatar Fry says:

I used to love watching Mats Sundin kick the crap out of Kenny every time they met.

I always wondered what was behind those beatings… Something that went on back in Sweden would be my guess.

  42. avatar Isletry says:

#35 “I’m not coming back but if I DID come back there is only one team I would ever play for.” …wasn’t he referring to Detroit when he said that? There were rumors that he as going to sign with them last year, but they were to tight up against the cap.

  43. avatar Tim F. says:

Kenny was my favorite player when he was an Islander. I’ve never done the math, but I’m willing to bet the Isles won/loss record was significantly better when he was healthy than when he was out with injuries. I agree with those who say sign him up – - he’d be an improvement over several of our current d-men.

  44. avatar Tim F. says:

And while we’re at it, let’s bring back Tomas Jonsson!

  45. avatar JPinVA says:

Kenny should be met with much love tonight. I’ll always have fond memories of him skating out of his end, making that crisp first pass, and knowing how to angle a rushing defender… you know… we may have a young KJ in Jack Hillen… Wouldn’t that be AWESOME!

  46. avatar Helene says:

KJ was (and probably is) one of the nicest, humblest guys we ever had. I had the opportunity to talk with him at some booster club dinners-dances and he was, and I’m sure still is, first class all the way. If only wishes could come true and we could have our KJ back.

  47. avatar Helene says:

Just a post-script – any possiblity we could get KJ as a defense coach? Wouldn’t that be a great addition!

  48. avatar Healy says:

One of my favorite Islanders, and I do agree that he was underappreciated while he was here. When I was a kid Jeff Norton (for whatever reason) was my favorite D-man, but it soon became Kenny Jonsson. Wish I could be at the game!

  49. avatar Chris A says:

Makes me flash back to some good times

  50. avatar Glen S says:

    Sign him

  51. avatar Potvin5 says:

Jonsson was a special player because he made plays that looked so effortless. I was at NVMC one night and the puck was deep in the Isles end just a bit below the left dot. While he put his body to one opponent to stop them from moving toward the crease, he reached around that guy with his stick and poked checked the puck away from the other opposing player. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a play like that before. That idea doesn’t occur to 99.9% of the D-man out there. Jonsson would be my favorite Isles after the great Denis Potvin.

  52. avatar jt says:

CB, what’s the story behing KJ’s visit? Was he invited by the Isles? Why is he in town? Has he been back since he last played for the team? Did you get a chance to speak with him? Did I ask enough questions?

  53. avatar HG on LI says:

#44 Yes!!! TJ is my fav Jonsson. I wore his #3 jersey when I was in high school.

  54. avatar I Want My Free Chili! Let's Go Islanders! says:

He should have his jersey retired by the isles, he deserves it. It’ll look great next to bossy, smith, trottier, nystrom, potvin, and gillies. Or at least put him in the Islanders hall of fame.
