Any team would start Rick in one of this weekend’s games. As Chris has mentioned a few times, you have to see what he has at some point. And the team has shown all year long that it doesn’t like to start 40-year-old Roloson back-to-back nights. Personally I likely would have gone with tomorrow (to ride the hot goalie) but in reality it makes no diference. This team is not without it’s problems, but wanting to have their (finally healthy it seems) long term goalie actually play a game is not one of them.

If DP is feeling good I bet he will be playing a lot (something like every third game)…Rolo is doing great but we are committed to DP for the next decade might as well develop some chemistry with KO, JT, etc and get him back into all-star form. Great to see him out there again, while sometimes frustrating to watch (handling the puck to much) its exciting and perfect for the go go system.

The defense was a big cause of the loss tonight. Let’s not just pile on Rick and blame Rick for everything. Witt had a horrible turnover. He’s been a warrior and good Islander but he has really hurt the team this year.
-
I actually thought DP was ok for not playing in over. A year.. The Isles D is what sucks! Why anyone would put the two weakest D-men (Witt and Gurvai) on the same line is what I have an issue with..
I would expect Rolli to start 90 percent of the remaining games.. If not then we pick top 5 in next years entry draft.
Isn’t there anyone better than Witt or Gurvai in Bridgeport CB?????????
-
The D was just as bad in Colorado. We shouldn’t really completely absolve DP either…let in some very average (that’s being generous) goals. That said, it’s to be expected he’ll take some time to get back to form. On starting him tonight, it’s back to back games this weekend, so it stands to reason Rolli gets a game and DP gets a game. Dallas gives up plenty more goals than Phoenix…maybe they figured the Isles would still have a decent chance to win even if DP wasn’t particularly sharp.

Brendan Witt was the biggest problem on the ice tonight, in my opinion. He really stinks. He had a fat turnover right next to Dipietro that led right to a goal. Dipietro made some big saves, had an assist, and moved the puck well. The team wasn’t adjusted to his puck movement yet, but I already noticed a big difference. We enter the zone quicker and easier.
Josh Bailey making MAJOR improvements over the last two weeks. Rob Schremp also seems to be turning a corner.
We really need to trade Witt. A 5th round pick would be so worth it. Freddy Meyer can definitely do better than Witt. We seriously have to deal with the fact that Brendan isn’t the player he was a few years ago, and doesn’t fit in our system at all.
-
No matter who’s in goal, the D is a major cause of concern for the Isles. It’s hard for the team to get on any type of roll with this group of D. I doubt Witt could be moved but Let’s see someone else in place of Bruno. I would not mind Dustin Kohn getting a look.

I was impressed. I thought Ricky picked right up where he left off. Two questionable goals and a loss.
It’s hard to believe but that if the Isles bought him out on June 15th they’d have to pay him $1.5 million a year through the 2031-2032. (H/t capgeek.com)
But, hey, why not? After all, Yashin might be our highest paid player next year at $4.75 million ($1.5 million cap hit) acccording to nhlscap.com.

how about the complete disappearing act of John Tavares?! he is weak on the puck, and not ready for prime time, imho. dipietro, and witt are equally bad. gervais has been playing slightly better( only one not costly giveaway vs. dallas). weight has NO shot. Sutton has impressed. inexcusable breakdowns vs. dallas, followed by great 3rd period. coach has to find a way to eliminate these breakdowns or we are in ALOT of trouble for the balance of this season. i don’t think the Isles are THAT far off from being a serious contender, but they need better coaching right now overall.
-
DP was rusty but that’s about you expected. Time takes time as Irina Derevko said. Hopefully he will improve AND stay healthy.
-
roli is number 1 right now…
dp is number 2… dont throw dp into the #1 goaltender spot when he isnt ready… let him win an AHL game first -
They have to make a decesion on Biron soon. Gordon must only worry about a Rollie and DP tandom. Just because DP came back from a long rehab does not mean he has to be a #1 or even 1A. Rollie deserves a shot at being a #1. Re-evaluate at the end of this season if DP will be a #1. For God’s sake, they have a shot at the playoffs this year and Rollie is the main reason why.
-
dp was “eh” tonight but what could you expect–he hasnt really played in years–Also have conserns that Tavares is playing hurt
-
defense lets down DP – should have been a 3-2 isles win
#11 i agree with u – JT looks like hes hurt , gordon needs to sit him a few for the stretch run to rest a bit
not worried about JT – okposo went thru
his struggles last year as well -looking forward to seeing a better JT next year
DP was DP for a guy who hasnt played in a year in the NHL and coming back from injurythe ” O ” showed up and the “D” took the nite off
good luck tonite boys -
Let’s put in perspective the fact that Dallas, especially Turco, was clumsy with the puck all night. If they weren’t giving the puck away all night, we would have been shut out.
-
It all started when the Isles traded Luongo and Jokinen for a bag of pucks in order to make DP the first overall draft pick over Danny Heatley or Marian Gaborik. So instead of Luongo, Jokinen, and Heatley/Gaborik, we have Parrish (no longer in NHL), Kvasha (no longer in NHL) and DP.
It all went downhill from there.
-
what’s all this talk about DP being a #1 goalie again. Let’s all face the facts, DP will never be a top performing #1 goaltender again. The minute he starts playing like the old acrobatic Rick, the knee or hips will once again end his season. sorry, it’s just the way I see it. He will be second rate from now on, if that.
-
That is a valid point, the Isles usually average 2 goals a game, if DP let’s in softies, we will definitely be picking top 5 again, but that would not necessarily be a bad thing. As far as Taveres, he has 16 goals, Stamkos, Crosby, all struggled in their first year. I would not trade that pick for anything. He will be a force in 3 years. Cut JT some slack..
-
I thought he played ok. Besides the 1st goal which i thought was weak. The team played very sloppy last night which didnt help him. I also think he needs to get used to his dman. I hope he stays healthy
-
#19 agree with 100% on JT. In fact as crazy as it sounds, I actually want a top 5 pick again over a play-off appearance. Any Isles fan who is being honest with themselves knows this team needs more parts to the puzzle and a top 5 pick adds to that. This team isn’t going far anyway and I’m sick of the Islanders being mediocre. Top five pick does a lot more for the Isles then a one and done play-off year.
-
Unbelievable there are Islanders fans who dare to criticize Ricky. Not having played in such a long time. What did you expect? He would be righ away as good as Rolo? Give the guy a break. I think it’s great he is already back. If he stays healthy he will definately improve and be the face of the franchise again. DP=NYI hope.
-
It’s great DP is back. Look great for having been out of the NHL for so long, I mean come on- 1st game in year and only played 5 last season! Now DP should NOT even be talked about as a #1 until next season, unless he plays like a #1 in each game he plays. If we want to go anywhere other than a good draft position, then we ride Rollie’s hot hand and DP plays as many games as Biron was. I won’t complain if we get a good draft position either as we need can use an NHL ready player. JT will get needed rest over Olympic break and hopefully get stronger over the summer. Now all we need is a Lighthouse!
-
I enjoyed DP being back, now if they would only address the Enforcer problem i would b the happiest Isles fan. Go get BIG MAC from Florida and rid this team of Gervais!!!! Stick to the young guns and this would be a fun team to watch. For me we are anEnforcer away from being a solid watch!!! Get it done already Garth!!!
-
The D could have been better, but the real reason for the loss was DP. The first and last goals were his fault. Plus, his reflexes were very slow and he was slow getting around the net. Snow gave the Stars 2 points last night by starting DP.
-
24, I agree jbranny.
I want DP to do well, because that means the Isles will do well. But to force feed DP is a disservice to this young team that is trying hard to make the playoffs. Absolutely no reason why DP should not have played a full month in Bridgeport getting the rust off, before playing for the Isles. Instead, we have to watch him get his reflexes back while playing meaningful games.

If Dipietro wasnt friends with Wang do the Isles keep the best player they have (roleson) out of games he can be playing in? Not for nothing but teams do not go 20 years without winning a playoff round by accident. It takes many poor choices.
