Sutton trade probable; Roloson remains an option
As the Olympic trade moratorium ends on Sunday night, Garth Snow’s options in the market for Dwayne Roloson and Andy Sutton remain strong. The Islanders general manager will have 63 hours between the end of the Olympics and Wednesday’s 3:00 pm EST trade deadline to make a major move…or two.
The Philadelphia Flyers were, like the Chicago Blackhawks, Washington Capitals and several others, a team considering the addition of a goaltender. With Ray Emery’s status still uncertain - “He’s not better, he’s not worse,” said Flyers GM Paul Holmgren - Philadelphia is now a team desperately in search of a proven veteran goalie. While Michael Leighton has been solid, backup Brian Boucher has not played since Jan. 3.
When you consider Roloson’s strong play for the first two-thirds of this season, his low-cost contract and 2006 Cup Final resume, the 40-year-old fits the Flyers’ bill.
The Blackhawks continue to consider upgrades in goal. If the Islanders would agree to absorb the talented Cristobal Huet’s $5.6 million owed over each of the next two seasons, Snow could give his rebuilding program a major boost by adding a first round pick and a top prospect.
Although there were some whispers that Snow and agent Pat Morris might begin discussions on a new contract for Andy Sutton during the Olympic break, there have been none. Even if Sutton and the Islanders work out a reunion in the summer, it’s now hard to believe Snow won’t bring back a significant asset for the big defenseman.
Especially with so many buyers looking for a low-risk, well-rested, second-pair defenseman like Sutton, Snow should get at least one offer he cannot refuse.
There is some interest in other veterans such as Martin Biron, Richard Park and Jon Sim, but the potential return is only third-fifth round picks.
Sutton and Roloson are the prizes. The trade deadline is Wednesday. The Islanders host Chicago on Tuesday.
Point Blank Take: Since there is a lot of interest in Sutton and he is unsigned beyond this season, the defenseman has to and will go to the highest bidder before the trade deadline. As for Roloson, don’t be surprised if Snow doesn’t pull the trigger.
Sometimes you have to look at history. Since the Ryan Smyth deal, three years ago Saturday, Snow has made few player-for-player deals of any consequence. The biggest was the heist of a year ago when he essentially traded Chris Campoli to Ottawa for a first round pick. The trade also involved free-agents-to-be Mike Comrie and Dean McAmmond.

Make it happen Snow. Please trade Roloson, Sutton, Park, Sim and get as much as possible.
Just get the best possible DEAL!
If Snow can work out a deal like that with Chicago, he’s got jump on it.
Why would we need Huet at that price? DP and Huet would make a combined 9-10MM.
Randolph Duke from “Trading Places” said it best. SELL, SELL, SELL
the scenario with roloson is interesting….the first round we would get back from a team like chicago will be 25-30th pick overall so i would do that deal if i get someone like versteeg or a nice prospect back…..as for sutton, anything short of a 1st rounder would be a dissapointment…he has to go since hes getting up in age….remember when we gave witt that extension
What I think we need to remember here is that the Islanders are in a rebuild. I say trade off all spare parts. Roloson will not be here when the team is good and in the playoff hunt. Trade him and bring up Munroe to back up or share time with DP. Trade Biron, Weight, PArk, Sim for whatever you can get and also trade sutton(He is very valuable to playoff teams) Get as much as you can in return and in the offseason these are easily replaceable guys to find as free agents. I know we have all been loving the playoff run these guys have been on but we need to look at this for the future so we can be consistent playoff and stanley cup contenders. I loved it when Ted Nolan was here but we never had the team to constantly make a playoff push except for the 8 seed and that doesn’t cut it. Keep the build going and lose the excess baggage!
Is San Jose looking for a playoff goaltender like Roloson? Looks like Nabakov continues to come up small in big games and may be the weak link.
Obviously, get more picks!! I love picks.
If a top prospect AND a first rounder come back for Roloson, Garth….what are you waiting for? Yes its a big cap hit, consider the probables. Maybe Huet can rediscover some of the Montreal magic he once had. As for Sutton, if its not a top prospect or first rounder, dont do it!! If Park gets a 5th and Sim a 7th - thats more picks!! I love picks!!
Trade Sutton for a first rounder (fingers crossed) and re-sign him to a 1-year-deal this summer (toes too).
Heh.
If we could get a solid young player and a 1st round pick from Chicago, we should take Huet. We can afford to pay him for a year and then buy him out. We’ve paid more money to guys like Comrie who weren’t worth it.
Imagine another 1st for Sutton? That’s potentially 3 this year. That’s a nice packege to trade on draft day for an established young player.
What would be the point of getting Huet from Chicago? while they are at it why not take more salary in Sopel
If anyone takes back Huet in a trade they are stupid….
If they do have to take Huet back they better be getting - 2 1st round picks, Kyle Beach and more top level prospects - for taking that Salary back.
The proposed deal of Huet, Versteeg, & Crawford to Florida for Voukun & Leopold would be horrible for Florida…if Florida is looking to dump salary and rebuild, what is the point - Huet make almost the same Salary as Voukun and is half the goalie….that is a used car salesmen move by Chicago…but Huet is the Lemon.
What might be interesting in a Huet scenario is if we sent Witt along.
Something like:
Roloson, Witt to Chicago
for
Huet, 1st
Hockey1919 (#8)..you stole my thunder! I was going to suggest that they trade him to the Russians for Ovechkin!
I couldn’t agree more with most of the thought on this board. Rolo nor Sutton will be around here when we are ready to be an actual playoff contender. If you can get quality (preferably young talent, not picks), it’s a no brainer.
I don’t see Wang giving Snow the go ahead to pick up Huet’s contract. If we’re going to spend, let’s spend it to address our needs. G is way down on the “needs list”.
With regard to a possible roloson to chicago for a 1st and player or top prospect. NO BRAINER. Huet (expensive albeit) for two more years gives you a quality goalie to be there if DP falters, and if he does not or needs some more time the return the way he ways, he fits that bill too. To get a first and top prospect or young player, (they supposedly are looking to get rid of versteeg), that would be a coup.
I agree sell park sim or anything you dont believe will be here for picks.
Witt, Roloson for Huet, Versteeg and a #1. Get it done GARTH!!!!
As far as Sutton is concerned, a #1 or a high #2 plug a top6 forward or top 4 Dman prospect is a must.
Park and Sim for a back of pucks and a slim jim, works for me
It seems like this year is the make or break year for the Isles. Making a deal to Chicago for the players CB mentioned seems to be a no-brainer even if we need to bring back Huet’s contract. Bringing back Versteeg and a first rounder is very tempting but I would want a little more. Would asking for Dustin Byfuglien be too much or would we need to deal a second round pick back to them?
Forget the last part of my comment. I didn’t realize that Dustin Byfuglien makes $3million in salary. There is NO WAY that the Isles take on Huet and Byfuglien’s salary. Let me go have another cup of coffee. Sorry!
Heres what I’d love to see next week:
To CHI: Roloson, Tambellini
To NYI: Huet, Versteeg/Sharp, 1st
To PHI/BUF: Biron
To NYI: 2nd Round Pick (I’d even take a 3rd, since we have Huet, or throw in a 4th/5th to get their 2nd)
To Anyone: Sutton
To NYI: 1st
To Anyone: Weight/Park/Sim
To NYI: Anything in the 3rd-5th round range
Tank in the standings to get a lottery pick, then trade the 3 extra picks (to 1st and a 2nd) to get a second pick in the 3-7 range. This summer go after Volchenkov, and kick the tires on Kovalchuk. If Snow pulled all this off, adding one (maybe two) of Hall/Seguin/Fowler plus Volchenkov and Kovalchuk (for the pipe dream), then the rebuild would be a ridiculous success in only 3 years
Crackhead Theo. Sometimes you need to assess your situation. If as a GM you are in talks with a team like Chicago and on the table they are presenting you with
1st round pick in 2010
A solid prospect
A good young current player on their squad
Cristobal Huet and his contract
in exchange for
Roloson and Sutton
regardless of Huet’s contract, you make that move.
I don’t think they’ll be able to resign Sutton, so I’d take what we can get. I don’t have enought oime to search all that is out there, but what I’d want most is a young D-Man prospect who could conceivably play in the NHL next season.
At some point next year, we have to put six blueliners out there–and account for injuries. I don’t see where they come from right now.
I wouldn’t expect to get a 1st rounder for Sutton or Roloson unless we take back a large amount of salary back.
I see you’re dusting off your trade prospects in preperation for the roster thaw on Sunday.
I agree with ya CB … Snow has to realistically analyze what he’s got … and trade any and all over 30 players if … and only if the price is right. This includes Mark Streit as far as I’m concerned. If Snow can get some first rounders or a combination of first round / top prospect(s) for Streit he’s gotta pull the trigger. Streit will not be under contract by the time the Isles can potentially enter the well respected top third of the league.
Personally I like every player on the roster … but it’s not a personality contest.
I would trade Sutton and get as much return as possible. The Huet idea would be fine for me. We won’t hit the cap wall this year, very very unlikely next year, and we’ll have a very reliable backup for DiPietro. Think along the lines of the 28-30 pick and a solid forward prospect. Sutton will get a big return, and it’ll probably be a good move. But they should really really consider resigning him after that! He said it himself he likes it here, I’m sure he’d understand being traded.
As for Park and Sim, I think they’re both worth 4th rounders. They have their qualities on a team, and they are experienced. Take the offer, they won’t be here in 3 months anyway.
Hi CB: Do you think Chicago could use a guy like Sutton.(he doesn’t hit them in the cap he’s a UFA) Would Sutton and Roloson for a 1st and a prospect be viable? Or would Snow extract more by doing a separate deal with 2 different teams? Do you think Chicago needs a guy like Sutton. Thank you CB.
It’s no brainer to take on Huet with Beach and a 1st. His salary will come off the books just as the team should be ready to be a real player in the UFA market. Of course, it’s not my money…
these guys have had great seasons, and really helped this team have a MUCH BETTER then expected season. but if you can get first round picks, and or top prospects for a 36 year old soon to be free agent, and a 40 year old goalie to speed the process on your clearly rebuilding NHL hockey team, you make the deals. its hard not to like the way park and sim play the game. thanks for the effort and playing hard, all the time guys. enjoy the playoffs, and take the picks garth.
throwing in the towel..if i can a high pick for it. heck yes. i wanna make the playoffs, but when something isn’t irreplacable, its worth substancially more then you paid for it, its never gonna be worth more, you move it.
another plus to all of this-when rollie and sutton get traded it greatly increases our chances of snagging a top 3 pick-which would just be the topping on the rebuilding cake
.. Looks like its going 2 happen and were doing a trade, some people may be upset about Sutton/rollie but its REALLY THE RIGHT THING TO DO! big pic it really is!
.. Lets get teams in the bidding war (sounds like there is) and get as much as possible. I know the Isles dont want to take back $$ but *IF* it really ’sweetens the pot’ then its something we have to consider!
.. We start “talking” with at least a #1 pick, a SOLID highly-rated prospect, a good young player and some middle round pics (3rd 4th) and then we go from there!
.. I REALLY feel good about this, im hopefull Garth can get a nice return for the guys and keep adding depth and talent to the organization! Add a free agent or 2 over the summer and we just keep going in the right direction!! Lets go ISLES!!!!
Very interesting on Huet CB. NEver thought about that. Fact that he is overpaid, You are right. If we could get some great young talent from Chi to eat his contract that would be interest.
Also as much as i love sutton lately, he is 35 and unsigned. You get a #1 rounder for him or top prospect. you do it.
I commend Snow’s Discipline. Maybe he hasnt swung many deals but Campoli and that jinx Comrie for 1st round pick was genius.
Even Smyth deal, which i was negative one. OMarra is a bust, Nilson will never be great and that 1st rounder Plante (i believe) has not translated to anything.
Im very happy with how isles have looked his year and totally content for going for another top 5 draft pick in the draft at this point. A big talented DMAN.
This just seems like a no-brainer as for trading Roloson and Sutton. However, it would be beneficial to the Isles to resign Sutton in the offseason if that is possible. He appears to be a good role model when he is healthy. However letting him go for a 1st rounder is a no-brainer regardless of where that pick is in the 1st round.
Rollie is great and he deserves another shot at a cup. With the overabundance of goalies in the stable it seems that this move would be a no-brainer as well. These two deals can really show-off Snows bargaining skills. He has the ability to wow Islander Country with these deals. Although we are still in rebuild mode, the talent that he acquires could make a big impact on the direction of the team for next year and the thought of that is really exciting.
I would take that deal with Chicago. Huet has 2 years left on a deal, that basically mean he will not be around when the team is more established and competing consistently, however you’ll be adding a prospect that you can resign, and a #1 pick, both will factor into a potential contendor. I think thats worth the price of having, as CB said, a talented goalie like Huet to help us in net for the next two years while our players develop, then his salary comes off the books, and you have cap space to sign more free agents. AT that point we should have an attractive team and core of players that free agents may want to play with, and the coliseum/stadium situation will be solved. For sutton, a 1st rounder is fair, but a hopeful scenario. Lets get all we can for the older gents on the team, and get some young talent throught the door.
Any way you slice it, Garth is going to be extremely busy this offseason. There are currently only 12 everyday players signed for next year, add to that 3 maybe 4 players from the Bridge or Juniors making the team next year. He’s going to need to either resign several RFA’s, trade or let them walk. I highly doubt any of our current UFA’s are getting another deal, except for maybe FMIV.
Huet for 5.6 mill with DP 4.? mill is way to much money to pay for 2 goalie’s. I would much rather see Rolo go to the Flyers for a draft pick and Sutton go to the Caps for John Carlson. Park, Sim, Weight, etc. are not in the the Isles future, get whatever you can and feel thankful. When FA time comes Snowy needs to get a some good vets to help KO, JT, JB, etc. As always great job CB, Thanx.
CB-EXACTLY: I would like to see the Islanders willing to take a bad contract for the sake of getting high picks and NHL ready impact prospects…..I was thinking something along the lines of NYLANDER from Washington….he could fill useless overpaid veteren role (make weight an assistant coach)
Get a guy like Carlsson who may be in our top 4 next year.
Washington could use Sutton or Roloson.
I also agree that Witt’s contract would need to be part of the equation in any bad salary deal.
As for Florida-Why would florida need Crawford-when there goalie of the future is coming to North America next season and is expected to be in the NHL in 2011.
I think if Hawks offer their 1st rounder and a good prospect for Roloson as long as we take Huet i think Snow has to do it. Huet is big cap hit but we are no where near cap and by the time his contract expires we are ready to compete, the pick and prospect would go a long way towards the rebuild.
I’m for any trade that makes us better in the LONG RUN for Cup (not playoff) contention.
And after the season we should also re-evaluate the head coach.
The Islanders are not trading Mark Streit and no one is trading FOR Mark Streit at this time. Next! CB
I simply don’t understand why so many people are so opposed to taking on Huet’s contract when you consider the assets that will have to come with it. If a prospect and high pick can be obtained with him, you simply can’t NOT make that deal. Last time I checked, the Isles were amongst the lowest in the league in payroll, and more than likely, they won’t be signing anyone in the offseason to push that “bottom line” skyward. Money has been wasted in far worse areas in the past, and on far lesser talent. Huet is a chance I’d be more than willing to take when looking at the big picture.
I agree, trade Roloson and Sutton, and the rest. I think getting picks for Sutton and Roloson is a bad idea at this point in the rebuild. This team needs good young NHL players with upside or top prospects, who have much less risk than picks. For example, I would love to get back Dustin Byfuglien from Chicago. Number 1 picks from top teams means, at best, we would need to wait three years to see them in the NHL, and there is a good chance they never make it at all.
I say Snow makes the Philly deal. Send Biron back in exchange for Asham and a 2nd round pick. He is a solid tough Veteran. Send Sutton to Chicago for Sharp. Straight up trades no more conditional non-sense or getting UFA’s in return
We need to make a splash by Wednesday. We have two valuable assets to peddle off for high level prospects. This is where Snow earns his paycheck. And with Chicago in town on Tuesday, I hope a deal gets done with them. Sad to see Clutterbuck re-up with the Wild today. He is AWESOME!!!
I think Sutton is a goner.
One of Roloson/Biron is a goner, both if we take back a goalie as part of a deal (á la Theodore, Huet, etc.).
Park and Sim for any draft pick, if offered, shouldn’t be a tough decision to make at this point.
If Weight should want another shot somewhere, Snow will likely grant him his wish, however little the return is.
That guys like Tambellini, Comeau, Hunter or Bergenheim will be thrown in to expand a deal/make a deal possible is not unthinkable.
We’ll soon know, but for those thinking we’ll be able to go on a successful yard sale, you might be setting yourself up for disappointment.
CB- Can you tell us who we can expect to be traded and what you would think the returns would be?
Im hoping snow trades biron, park, weight, roloson, sutton, sim and hunter…
we need to get creative. use our cap space if possible. take peoples trash if we must. but we are one more good draft haul (and petrov getting over) from becoming an actual legit nhl team again (not one who hangs around playoff contention due to the silly shootout rule)
I think this years trade deadline will be very similar to the one where Hal Gill and Adam Foote had a lot of value. Forget about the contract, where are you going to find a 6′6 reliable defenseman that can slam bodys around and if paired with a REAL partner could do some damage in the playoffs? I say his value is through the roof right now, we will all be surprised of the highjacking that will take place before the trade deadline.
No one is trading for Park, Sim, Tambellli or Hunter. They are marginal 3-4 line players. Don’t expect that Snow has to deal what ever he can. Every team has players like these. What GM would ever give the effort to make a trade for these guys even in a packed deal. Let’s load up on 6-7 round picks? …why? Will not happen. Only players of value who might move are Roloson, Sutton and maybe Biron. I’d be very surprised if anyone else moved.
For those wanting to trade Witt in their deals not likely. Witt needs to clear re-entry waivers where a team can pick him up for half his price & isles stuck paying the other half.
Waiting for someone to propose Roloson for Van Riemsdyk. But here’s hoping for some desperation by the buyers
Roloson and Biron are more valuable now since Turco is not available.See below from Dallas Morning News.
Feb. 25–Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk placed goalie Alex Auld
on waivers and proclaimed that he expects Marty Turco to stick with
the Stars past next Wednesday’s trade deadline.
Nieuwendyk set up the expectation of a Turco trade when he acquired
Kari Lehtonen from Atlanta on Feb. 9, but he squashed that talk
Wednesday by saying he expects Turco and Lehtonen to form the Stars’
goaltending pair for the final 21 games of the regular season.
“I don’t want to ever say never, but we would have to be blown away
with a great offer to deal him now,” Nieuwendyk said. “We feel this is
the best move for our team going forward, so that’s the plan right
now.”
Turco, 34, can become an unrestricted free agent in the summer, and
neither side is expecting the Stars to re-sign the goalie who holds
just about every regular-season goaltending record in franchise
history. Turco makes $5.4 million this season and probably will be
looking for a long-term contract in the same price range.
Picks are never a bad thing. In 3-4 years when we are really competing, we should have good chips to trade for the final pieces to our puzzle.
Look at Washington. They have an abundance of young talent and are in a good position to acquire what they need. The key is to make the best selections with all our picks.
I hope we don’t even look at goalies in this draft.
“There is some interest in other veterans such as Martin Biron, Richard Park and Jon Sim, but the potential return is only third-fifth round picks.”
I would not mind a return of those picks, as we have seen Garth turn picks into gold before on draft day.
From Chicago, as Botta has said we are not getting anyone from the curent team so stop pining for Dustin Byfuglien & Versteeg. I would love to get Dylan Olsen, their #1 pick from last year. He is descirbed as an attacking defense. And if Chicago would give us their #1 pick for Cap relief in Huet, why not. give Gart more assets to work with.
And hopefully Garth is alternating calls from McPherson and Shero for Sutton.
Dylan Olsen? I would have drafted him last year over DeHann. We’ll see in a few years who turns out to be the better pick.
If the return from Chicago is Huet, Garth should think about it, but not act right away. Huet is a 5.6 mil cap hit and what if he doesn’t rekindle his Montreal magic? Then we have a guy for 2 more seasons who the fans will whine and whine that Garth was a moron for making that deal despite some of those same fans crying now that that should be a done deal. San Jose could definitely use Roloson’s services if they want to get beyond the 1st round of the playoffs since Nabokov (for all that I like him) chokes big time in the playoffs. A dream pick from the Sharks for me would be Pavelski, but I don’t think they are making that deal since he’s such a big part of their success.
I don’t think anyone is taking Weight–he’s old and playing hurt. I’m happy with him finishing this season and I’d love to see him return in some coaching or front office capacity. Maybe Sim and Park find new homes and the Isles get some late round picks. That’ll be nice since I’m tired of seeing Park hog the puck only to lose it on some extra move spin that takes his linemates out of position to pick up his slack.
For the last time, the Caps aren’t trading John Carlson.
I sure would love to have Stefan Della Rovere, though.
Chris, great work and writing as always. I believe the Isles should try and get a big, strong, young, talented defencemen, if they are, to let go of their more established player’s. With the rebuild where it is today, I believe, the Islander’s should be playing their rookies. Let them see what they bring to the table, at the NHL level. Chris, could we revisit, the subject of the Islander’s Jersey’s for next season. I think it still seems to be unclear what they are going to do. I agree with you that, next years White should be this years third, in White, and they should be the main uniforms, for next season. I sincerely hope they let those rediculous bad pajamas go. They are simply ugly. Certainly not NY Islander’s caliber. Can you please find out for sure, and if they are bringing back the current white, what can be done to fight this. Thanks Chris, Mark
The obivous trade chips for maximum return are Roloson and Sutton. These two players are the team’s best chance to re-stock the team with high draft picks and prospects.
Since the draft is not that deep this year Snowy may opt for prospects or picks in next years draft.
As far as Weight, Park, Witt, Sim, Tamby, Biron are concerned…I don’t see Weight or Biron being moved. Weight is hurt no one will want that. Biron is an affordable back-up and a team player who will push DP by not make waves in the media about playing time for Snow. It also buys Snow another year with goalie prospects in farm system.
Best case senerio high picks for Sutton and Roloson maybe a prospect tossed in.
Hit or miss on the others. If anything low end draft picks at best.
These moves will dictate a playoff push or not. Not that the team will quite but unless there is a notable add. Not going to happen it will be up and down til the end. It was a good year at best.
Draft Cam Fowler, resign Sutton and trade Gervias. This summers game plan.
Hay Isles revamped, you have the drafts mixed up. This year is supposed to be a nice deep draft like last year. The 2011 draft is the draft that are giving scout the hibigibies.
And I agree with drafting Fowler, as we need to beef up the D Corps. While HIllen and MacDonald are playing better then expected, I dont know if we can trust them to be a True #1 pair come the time we look to challenge in the playoffs.
Let’s see Daddy Wangbucks prove me wrong and eat another team’s salary dump for an increased return (pick/prospect) in a trade.
I’d bet my life savings he wouldn’t allow this to happen. Wang talks big, but delivers small.
Wang’s got 5million reasons not to authorize a trade that returns Cristobal Huet (even if it includes Chicago picks and prospects galore).
And therein lies the difference between NYI and the Rangers/Leafs of the world.
An owner who cared about winning and an on-ice product would authorize that deal. Especially when he continues to roll in cash.
That owner is not Wanger.
(Sorry CB… I’m done kissing this guy’s rear simply because he keeps the Isles on L.I. — of which the only driver that I see is the cable contract).
Irish Isle (#56): McDonald nor Hillen are top pairing dmen. You’re lucky if they ever even become 2nd pairing dmen.
And therein lies the difference between NYI and the Rangers/Leafs of the world.*******
CJ You say that like the Rangers and leaf are successful!!! They over spend and have just as little to show as we do. Poor example. I agree that Wang doesnt know squat about hockey but dont have him follow in the foot steps of two loosing franchises.
Wow, Huet makes that much. There is no way they put a goalie on the team that makes more than DP.
Can’t wait to read the whiny commments after nothing big happens at the deadline. It’s an Islanders tradition!
Interesting if the Isles take a goalie back (like Huet) then they could trade both Roloson and Biron for assets.
I really like Roloson and Sutton. I’d be so happy if Andy resigned this summer. I don’t want the defense getting smaller and softer but if you have the opportunity to grab great assets you do so.
Anyone else drawing interest Sim & Park you trade them right away. Both older guys. Park isn’t himself this year and Sim just plain needs to freakin’ go.
CB, anyone calling about Bruno? Can we send him to Montreal for a couple kegs of Moulson for us all to share or am I over estimating his value?
the best news for the Islanders is that Turco isn’t being moved. That ups the value for Roloson or Biron. I see Roloson being traded for a VERY good value.
Sutton to the Bruins, Roloson to the Flyers.
there is no way the isles are going to get versteeg AND a #1…i hope i’m wrong but i cant see it happening
#57-thats not fair on Wang.
How many teams have actually taken on bad salaries for the sake of picks and prospects. Rangers Owner thinks the bad salaries are great acquisitions at the time….he is not donating for prospects.
The only Cap deal for prospect I remember was NJ sending a #1 to San Jose to eat the remaining time on Malakhovs over 35 multi year deal. And that was only a Cap hit-Not true cash.
I would like to see the Islanders work this type of deal-but I am not sure how many owners would do it.
later richard, my asian brother
I would love for snow to pull a trade that ships Roloson to Chicago. I have been hoping for an opportunity to snag Versteeg due to Chicago’s cap problems. If we took Huet, that could also potentially snag us a first round pick as that is basically the equivalent of us adding another player in the deal. Hopefully we could pull of something like:
To NYI: Versteeg
First Round Pick
Huet
To Chicago: Roloson
Maybe a later round pick or role player
I wouldn’t mind taking Huet’s salary for a couple of reasons/
1. If we unload Roloson and Sutton, we are only taking back from Huet a net $500,000
2. We can trade Biron because we have a backup for Dipietro
3. Even with his $6 million salary, I feel if a contender was in dire straights they would take him at the deadline next year possibly
Sim has been on Waivers twice, why would someone trade anything for him? Roloson, dude has been great, but, a deal for the future makes sense, same with Sutton. Interesting that they play Chicago Tuesday, Garth can watch the game with whoever is the Hawks GM these days and make a deal, CB will be reporting the deal Tuesday night.
roloson to phi straight up for JVR
Chicago is not trading a valuable player like Versteeg or Sharp to get a goalie or defenseman. They’ll trade their first round pick and/or a mid-level prospect. MID.
The Capitals are not going to trade their top prospect for Sutton/Roloson.
Taking Huet’s salary for two years doesn’t hurt anyone but Charles Wang’s large pockets. It would solidify our goalie situation for at least next year. Not to mention, taking money off their cap space would help them enormously for their future as well (Kane, Toews, Hossa, Seabrook, etc, all have big contracts and they’re near the cap limit). They would have to give up something good for that deed, but not someone that is helping them get to the Cup this year.
Sutton is worth a 20-30 spot pick in the draft, and maybe more. Depends on how good Garth is at the negotiating thing. We know he’s not trigger happy.
Might as well just wait and see.
So we trade Rollie and Sutton and whoever else…..do we get players back of any worth?
Can we try and compete next year or will we sell off again once we tank next year? I’d rather send the message TO FANS and PLAYERS that we’re kinda, you know, interested in winning every night.
The combination of cap space and cash (if Wang is willing to spend the money) is the perfect storm to rebuild quickly. We have 2 veterans that teams are willing trade for.. then you trade them!!!
Take Huet, the 1st pick and either Kyle Beach or Dylan Olsen. The trade from a player stndpoint is unfair but, eating that contract allows Chicago to keep the team intact next year. Take advantage fo theor mistake and steel an extra player.
I love Sutton and Roloson but the smart GM (please be smart Garth) has to trade them away. They will not be an integral part of the team in 3 years, but what we get for them will be.
No problem with trading Sutton, Rolo, Weight, Biron, Park, Sim and Hunter! Acquire as much as possible and move on. If we can get a 1st for a package including Rolli and the same for Sutton then who’s better then us! Taylor Hall here we come!
Gary your so right. Only an idiot would pass up Kyle Beach (19)or Dylan Olsen (19) in an exchange for a “D” man on the down hill side of 35 and a goalie on the other side of 40! It’s a No brainier to exchange talented age for talented youth.
Wang not spending , and no one has any interest in Park or Sim, let along give anything to get those two.
The Flyers are not trading JVR, a recent 2nd overall pick, for a 40-year-old goalie. They will not trade any of their top young NHLers for him. Next! lol…CB
Trade Sutton and Roloson for as much of a return possible. Taking on other teams salary and maximizing a return is even better. Huet’s contract will expire at the end of next year, if it means us getting more value for keeping him on the roster, that is fine with me. 1st round picks and top prospects are very important. We should be landing in the top 3 for the lottery if both of these moves are made. Draft Fowler if possible and this season will be a huge success.
I hope we replace what Sutton brought by the begining of next season. We also need a top forward on this team to help in JT’s development.
Look if we can get any kind of draft pick at all for Park or Sim you need to make that deal. I believe Matt Martin was drafted in the 5th round. Would anyone here trade Park or Sim if we could possibly roll the dice on a 5th roundpick and get a Martin back? Anyone? Oh…EVERYONE? Thats what I thought.
great post CB. if the Islanders can aquire something decent for some of our players then I hope Garth Snow makes the move.
cb….this maybe off base.
if rollie is worth a first or second round pick, move him.
if sutton is worth a first or second round pick, you move him.
eating huets’ $5.3 million salary for 2 years, from a team in cap hell, is worth a lot more then late first round pick.
what could you do with $5.3 million in free agent money? thats nearly top pair defender money. folks are way to quick to spend 5.3 million on a goalie, for a late first round pick. squeeze them stones fellas, theres blood to be had.
What a difference a year makes. Last year, we trade what turned out to be a top 6 winger to a Cup contender and barely get a 3rd round pick (could have been a 5th!). Now we’re hoping for a couple of first-round picks. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves…there are very few sellers this year, and lots of buyers, and we do have the top rent-a-goalie. Hope your optimism is well placed.
or like CB said, we can just wait 60 hours.
If we give up Sutton without resigning him this summer - we get smaller period.
Guys, let’s calm down a bit here. Some of these trade offers (no offense) are ridiculous. Remember how excited we all got about the Guerin deal last year? And all we ended up with was a 3rd rounder - which could’ve been a 5th.
if you can get huet and versteeg you have to do it. i love Roloson, and they treated him like crap when DP came back. huet can take over the #1 spot in net for a few years, give the isles a chance.
Also they are in need of d-men and i think Hamhuis would be nice.
if snow could pull off something like roloson/park for huet/2010 first/top prospect that would be fantastic. the question is whether nyi are willing to take on huet’s salary. i think that sutton will def be traded. my guess is to washington. they could really use a d-man like sutton. we could have a real nice haul coming out way on wednesday.
If I was Garth I would look to move both Sutton and Roloson for the best possible deal(obviously) if that means taking a cap hit with Huet you have to take it. It gives us the freedom to trade Biron also. Plus whose to say DP doesn’t hurt his hips and or knees atleast we would have Huet to take over the helm. ( I like that better than Biron) I also think if Sutts is traded you tell him it was only for the better of the teams future, and we will be calling you on July 1st don’t get to settled whereever you’re going! If anyone is calling about Park or Sim Garth has to say two things
1. Are you effing with me
2. Done deal we’ll take your 5th round pick
here’s to a bright future Lets Go Isles!!!!
hd, I agree with you I would take both Versteeg and Huet. Howver, the Islanders woulkd be taking $8.6 million in salary and giving up only $3 million. It might be to much for Wang…maybe if the Hawks threw in a #1 and the Isles sent someone back (Hunter’s $2 million or someone like that)…maybe they would have a deal.
If we get two first round picks plus end up in the top 5 we would be in great shape going forward. While probably not as deep with fwds this year there are a ton of big talented defensemen in the upcoming draft.
Folks! Washington is not giving up Carlson,or Alzner for that matter. I see them quite often out here in Hershey!! They are not only their future but are NHL ready and probably will see meaningful action in the NHL playoffs this year. Selfishly,I hope they remain right here for the balance of the season. Currently they are main cogs for a team currently 44-11-2 storming thru the AHL! With Goalies Neuvirth,Varlomov and Braden Holtby,it is quite conceivable one of those kids could be ridden by the Big Club throughout the playoffs. Years ago, an unknown kid named Ken Dryden was promoted late in the season, led his team to a Stanley Cup and never looked back. The same thing occured only a few years ago with Anaheim’s Jiggy Giguere. I’d love to see the Isles acquire a talent such as John Carlson or Karl Alzner, but don’t hold your breath. The Caps rebuild over the past 5 years isn’t only about this season. The two aforementioned kids should be apart of what looks like a dynasty.
I like the Hjalmarsson kid from the Hawks .
He’s rfa at seasons end and with their cap being what it is they might have trouble signing him .If they are interested in Sutton I’d strongly consider an even swap of these two fellas.
If you’re saying that we can get a top pick and a first and Huet, for Roly and Sutton, and picking up some salary for 2 years, then yes it hard to say no to that.It wouldn’t hurt to throw in Weight Park, Sim and Witt for some return as well. It’s also time to pick up some FA’s this summer. It really was frustrating to see how many decent Fa’s slipped by this season alone.
the only tradeable assets are sutton and roloson, maybe biron. can we please keep the expectations low. I will be very happy with trading both for one good prospect and #1. I dont see any market for park, sim, etc.
are the islanders really possibly content to go back to DiPietro as the certified no 1? I’m not sold.
While Sutton and Roloson are two of my favorite players on the team this year, it’s clear the Isles are looking at max potential of an 8th seed in the playoffs (if the stars align and every team above the Isles lose 90% of their remaining games). Therefore, we take the best offer for both players whatever that may be and move forward. Better to take advantage of the situation and walk away with something than nothing and I do hope Sutton is re-signed in the offseason for two more years.
We have a lot of players on this team that would fetch a 4th or 5th round pick. Wish we would rid ourselves of some of these guys at the deadline, especially if they are not part of the future (Sim, Park) or may be bought out over the summer (Gervais) but not hopeful this will happen.
CB - if Sutton is traded and we do not bring back an NHL d-man, does Brendan Witt get called up on re-entry waivers to take his place?
Why is the Chris Campoli trade a heist for the Islanders? Campoli is the fith d-man for a team that has played very well this season. It was Campoli’s goal with less than two minutes left against the NY Rangers several weeks ago that propelled the Sens to a winning streak.
Ever hear of Maxim Kuznetsov, Jesse Wallin, Kevin Grimes, Bryan Sutherby, Jason Bacashihun, Martin Vagner….. well, these are a handful of players taken with the 26th pick from 95 to 02. The only impact 26th pick was Havlat in that period.
People put too much stock into draft picks. Chris Campoli is an NHL regular on a good team. To say that his trade was a steal for the Islanders is ridiculous.
Isles are penny pinchers…they will NEVER trade for Huet …this is a team that didnt even try and sign Hossa for 5 million…no way they pay someone like Huett that money…
John #98! The Isles in all probability aren’t content with DePietro, but there are 15mil reasons and 11 remaining years liability, why they must learn to live with him.
#100! The Isles aren’t ‘penny pinchers’,but rather Lighthouse watchers. It is unlikely the owner will invest any more than he has to,until he knows where his franchise is going to be,or if he wants to be the one to take them there.
Let’s not get carried away here. A bag of pucks AND a slim jim. I think you’re gonna have to sweeten that one up.
Isle’s should trade every vet they can and go completely young. This is a youth movement. Trade the good vets like Sutton and Roloson for best deals you can make. Create bidding war and take the best deal. These are 2 commodities that are very important to teams in the playoff picture.
Sutton will definitely get us a great return.
Roloson is even more valuable since Vokoun is balking at waiving his no trade clause.
To poster #102..isles are in penny pinching mode..the reason (mini city wasn’t built) is not important. Penny pinching is penny pinching. No radio …no point blank sponsership…lowest paid coach in NHL lowest paid players n lowest paid gm…..the isles got outbid for tanguay from Tampa this summer…tanguays not making a fortune. Isles are in penny pinching mode n will never in a million years take on a contract like Huet.
Roloson, Huet, Biron….When will this franchise’s goalie situation ever be a non-issue?
Eastonhockey,of course the reason for your so called penny pinching mode is significant. Wang is austere because he is hemmoraging money with his investment here, and now with the viability of its future in doubt,he is unwilling to put any more good money to bad than he has to until he has certainty of its future and can project making money ON his investment. This isn’t a game of monopoly he is playing. As a fan,I can understand your frustration. I am frustrated also. Looking at this situation intelligently however,Wang has understandably drawn a line in the sand and will stay right on the cusp of the Cap Floor, until further notice.
Bottom line trade Rolli and Sutton get what you can for them.If someone wants Biron for a 3rd or 4th rnd pick do it to.Bring up a young goalie to back up DP for the last reamining games and see what he’s got.Taking on big salary like Huet doesn’t make to much sense unless the hawks make it worthwhile they are in a cap dilema not us.I don’t see anyone wanting Witt,Hunter,Sim or Park but if they offered any pick I would deal any or all of them.
I dont mind trading for Huet if the return is really strong. But there is a small part of me that is saying to NOT pull the trigger for him. Can you imagine having 2 MONSTER GOALIE contracts that cant be traded. That would be a black hole in the goalie position.
Plus you have to trade both Biron & Rolie.
I say go for broke in the draft and get 2 picks in the top 5.
I cant believe what I read here. Don’t be surprised if we get NO first rounders. We will not pay Huet 5 million for 2 years just to pick up an extra draft pick.We are NOT getting Carlson so forget your nonsense. I will be very happy if we some how end up with one extra first rounder.
Brian #100 - SPOT ON! Thats why I say you hopefully get a #1 out of Chicago. Take that and what ever picks we need to trade to move up to lottery position. Then we walk away from this years draft with 2 high #1’s.
I’ll put my stock in high #1 picks for a team that is loaded with tons of B+ talent.
i wish the isles could draft fowler and seguin…i know im prob dreaming but that would be amazing
If the Isles could trade for Dylan Olsen I would be estatic! But I think we are dreaming. We are not taking Huets 5.6 mil Contract. We are paying 8.8 mil this yr in Goalie salaries. The 2nd most in the NHL! We already have Yashins & DiPi’s nightmare contracts on our hands, Wang is NOT looking to p/u more bad contracts- no matter what we can get back. And can you blame him? Expect Roloson to bring back a late 3rd rd pick + a 5th rd pick (w/ his recent bad play) Expect Sutton to bring back a 2nd rd pick + a 3rd rd pick. Park will get a 5th rd pick. Biron will get a 5th rd pick(if we keep Rollie). The only way we get a 1st rd pick is if we trade Streit(don’t discount that w/ McDonalds extension & our numerous D’ prospects). Or if we throw Bergenheim in to a deal. There were only two 1st rd picks traded last yr. Jokinen was, but he’s a star player. The Campoli trade wasn’t a traditional deadline deal. It was two rebuilding teams exchanging youth for youth. Maybe if we combine Rollie w/ Sutton & we throw in a 3rd rd pick, we can get a 1st rd pick.
I don’t see the Hawks trading for a 35yr old d-man and a 40yr old goalie. If they do it will be for a 1st and marginal prospect. The poster suggesting Hjalmarsson…keep dreaming he is well regarded in the orginazation and they are trying to clear cap space to sign him. If the Hawks can’t pry away Vokoun I believe they stand pat.
The grass is always greener on the other side for you guys, isint it? Yes, I know this is a rebuild but what the heck is wrong with trying to develop your own players? Trading the only 2 players that gave you a chance to win this year, what kind of a loser message are you sending your young guns? Its O.K. to lose for a while, we will just keep on taking draft picks forever. Folks, The only way these young players will develop properly is if you show them you want to win by giving them some talent to play with. No team ever builds on the draft alone( in this era). What are you going to do in a yr or 2 when J.T. gets really good, Trade him at the deadline for a draft pick?
Here is a touch of humble pie, folks! Defensive prospects such as Donovan,DeHaan,Hamonic and Kessel had better be the real deal, because there isn’t much at Bridgeport, nor are the fowards anything to write home about either. Tonight the Hershey Bears skated circles around the Sound Tigers,9-2 getting 50 shots on net! Both Lawson and Munroe WEREN’T terrible in goal to boot. The stark reality is other organizations could very well be miles ahead of our Isles in any rebuild!! I have seen the powerhouse (Bears) of the AHL explode in similar fashion against a few other teams, but NONE was as embarrassing as tonights destruction. Our play by play guy out here(John Walton)described the beating accurately, when he said ;”this is like watching men against boys!” As much as I love the Hershey Bears,I love the Isles more! This was very discouraging!!!
The trades have started Panthers trade d-man Leopold to Penguins for 2nd round pick. C’mon Garth shed some dead weight (no pun intended)! If Leopold can fetch a 2nd rounder, we are in good shape!
