TREVOR GILLIES PLACED ON WAIVERS
Anaheim makes Nick Boynton available at no cost

CB on FanHouse: On Olli Jokinen to the NYR

After three minutes of action, Trevor Gillies has been placed on waivers with the goal of returning him to Bridgeport. This is not a surprise because the Islanders have been indecisive in their use of protectors for the last season and 50 games. Also on waivers is Nick Boynton, the hitting, 6-2, 215-pound, 31-year-old Ducks defenseman with $700,000 left on his ‘09-10 deal before becoming a UFA. Boynton is not Borje Salming, but a quality depth dman.

I say go for Boynton. Solid D man and Kohn could use some more experience in the A.

  2. 2 Alex

    Scoop him Garth!

  3. 3 Joe

Garth made a bad move with Gillies, make up for it with Boynton. This team is very bad right now and Garth needs to be criticized for just going along with it. Hes the GM, make a move.

  4. 4 Jon in Chicago

Isles won’t claim Boynton. He would take up minutes from Kohn’s development is what Snow would say I bet.

  5. 5 Joey303

Doubt that the Islanders get him

  6. 6 Strummer's Army

I would take Boynton, he would be an upgrade even if it is a stop gap measure.

The Gillies thing is just wierd! I’d love to know the truth on why Snow & Gordon are so wierd and against the use of toughness. This has been an issue since Snow got the job and the team gets softer and smaller every year. It is beyond bizarre, especially since the rest of the NHL is toughening up and looking for bigger guys. Wierd!

  7. 7 Willis

Can’t wait to see what happens next! Something tells me that even with no game until Thursday, there won’t be a shortage of comments here. :)

  8. 8 ken

makes a lot of sense, if only to protect kohn from being rushed and put a little heat on gervais & co. Also this would be a nice replacement if we do end up trading sutton at the deadline.

  9. 9 Joe in Massapequa

I am sure Gillies will clear and be back down with the BST.

There is no reason not to claim Boynton. If you scoop up Boynton, Witt returns to full health and the mix in Andy Sutton you have some muscle and grit on the blue line…

  10. 10 Metalcoconut

Garth just seems to be ahead of the curve on some of the moves he makes. That isn’t a bad thing but what a quick turn around for Gillies. Perhaps this is Garth’s way of adding muscle to the farm team in efforts to grow the Isles in the future. It isn’t a bad plan but we could use some talent on the blue line in this upcoming draft. I am not suggesting he drafts them to throw them into the big club immediately but it wouldn’t hurt to have a player or 2 in Bridgeport. However, to get what he really needs he will have to go to the UFA this summer. There has to be at least one big D man he is targeting this summer.

  11. 11 Mikey

I’m not a big fan of Boynton. The guy had a wonderful start to his career but has been pure garbage since the lockout. He’s played on four teams in 5 years and has terrible mobility. I also remember him getting disciplined by the Panthers a few years ago for yelling at his coach. I can’t see him playing any more than 10-11 minutes a game in our system.

  12. 12 Chris TMC

Mikey- If thats true about disciplining him for yelling at his coach theres practically a guarantee the Isles wont pick him up. The Isles seem to value character and attitude more than, well, anything.

  13. 13 Eric Nystrom

What!!!??? I just got my Gillies jersey!!

  14. 14 kevin27nyi

pick up boynton and then trade gervais then islander nation celebrates!

  15. 15 Madchef

maybe picking up boynton makes sense…..hence it will never happen

  16. 16 suffolk isles fan

I’d say get a quality d-man and let Kohn play more minutes in the minors. Maybe he’ll become a solid d-man like McDonald in a couple of years. I agree he comes with some baggage and started his career off great but has falling off since. He’s still better than Kohn right now.

  17. 17 Fred

    Can it hurt?

  18. 18 Hollywood

Is Boyton worth it or let Kohn play. I say let the kid play and live with it!

  19. 19 Tony F.

Oh come on Garth! The guy hits!

  20. 20 rimmy

why dont they just pick him up until hillen returns? then just send boynton on waivers again who cares. God forbid we just let kohn play and someone else get injured. Then what? You’re digging quite deep into a shallow Defense.

  21. 21 JtorBust

Gillies signing was a pathetic attempt to try and motivate players to be more physical. Tool many little league coaches implore , make believe your going to start the guy on the bench who gives it his all but actually has zero talent. This is what we are dealing with-

  22. 22 Alfred

    No loss.

Bring up the next piece of meat.

  23. 23 Harold C

If Garth doesn’t pick him up, I bet the Rangers will. We need some depth and some experienced depth at that - this is a no brainer.

  24. 24 Mike L

Who needs Boynton when we have Chef Bruno

  25. 25 Harold C

re: # 7, I agree with you. But still, what’s the risk? A change of scenery could help and if he doesn’t work out, cut him loose. Maybe he gets an attitude adjustment by coming here under a new coach…

  26. 26 Bob

Gillies was a mistake it limited Gordon’s ability to roll 4 lines. This is just the start of the moves Anaheim is going to make in addition to trading Giguere for Blake & Toskala. Boynton for nothing is a no brainer the team needs a D that can hit besides Sutton & Meyer and can stop other teams from crashing the Isles Goalies.

  27. 27 dynasty23x4

whats the waiver order, are we even garaunteed a shot at boynton? i say grab him- even as a 5th or 6th D, its a quick fix. maybe he’ll “put someone on his ass”…

  28. 28 michele

can’t believe anyone here is saying boynton is bette than kohn. If anything, I would pick up boynton and waive gervais arse.

  29. 29 Jersey Steve

I’d pick up Boynton and sign Sykora if the team is looking for some immediate help.

  30. 30 RD

If we let Boynton pass, I say we put Garth Snow on wiavers along with Gervais, Park, and Meyer. Trade Biron and Witt somewhere. Lets go Garth, get off your ass and help this struggling team! Do something! This guy is invisible!

  31. 31 terry b

garth and the isles are an irish version of the pioneers…abstinence from toughness and any form of violence

  32. 32 IslesRock

I have not seen enough of Boynton, but I would think he would be an upgrade over most of our current D men. I would agree with post 8 that he would be a big body if Sutton is traded by the deadline, and I think he will be. I am sure there is a team out there that will give Sutton (the Leafs) a three year $11 million deal next year. The Isles will not.

  33. 33 Dadi

    No to Boynton , I want…Cam Fowler…

  34. 34 Section 320 rocks

    Go get him Garth

  35. 35 Blizzard

…Im not giving up on my dream of a playoff birth. Call me the eternal optimist!!! Party on Garth!!!!!

  36. 36 billy

we should get boynton, but of course we won’t.

based only on a hunch, i think snow is gonna knock our socks off again with a huge trade.

seeya gillies, sorry we wasted your time. haha

  37. 37 Will C.

Don’t break the trend, put Sim on waivers, get Tamby some time, there is no point in sitting him forever, see what you have then move on. Don’t pick up Boyton, just let it be. If we make 8th it’s no point. I’d rather ride this to the lottery.

  38. 38 NYICHAMP39

I wish you were right Billy but the problem this year is we have literally NO ONE that any team would covet to be able to pull off a “Knock our socks off” trade. And anyone they would covet is an Islanders “untouchable.” There will be no blockbusters this March that include the names Biron, Weight, Witt, Gervais, Tambellini etc. lol. Look for a very very boring trade deadline for these Isles. Maybe pick up a second and a third rounder in trading away Biron and Witt to a team looking to add some depth.

  39. 39 Bryan

Grab Boynton or admit you are gunning for a Top 5 pick. I’m happy either way.

  40. 40 raul17

Gillies must have had some contract!!

  41. 41 NYICHAMP39

For the record I say grab Boyton. He is big and physical and the last thing we need is our relatively weak D being overpowered and having guys crashing the net hard on Ricky. Anything that could prevent him from getting injured again.

  42. 42 Tond

get him we may make the playoffs ya know

  43. 43 Sheppy

Don’t shed any tears for Gillies. He just played his second NHL game! A lot of aspiring players never even sniff an NHL game.

With regard to toughness, while I agree that adding Gillies was a “nothing” move, and sending him down was even less, the Isles need toughness. At this stage of the season, there really is no way to insert toughness into the line up without doing something like this (unless you consider wholesale changes). I supported his signing and I am not for his release. Rolling four lines? Come on guys! This team is not there yet. A solid team who has depth should worry about rolling four lines.

  44. 44 Matt S.

if he is available they HAVE to take him. Gillies can go through waivers 38 times and nobody would take him, and if they do you can pluck another talentless goon off the goon tree next week.

  45. 45 BSTFan18

Metalcoconut, Gillies was already under contract for the bst. The farm as enough muscle. He’s not a part of the future due to his age, he just turned 31…

  46. 46 Sheppy

Boynton was drafted in the 1st round by Washington some years ago. If memory serves me correctly, he did not sign and re-entered the draft after a highly succesfuly year in junior. He was re-drafted by the Bruins and came in with them. He has had really good years and average years. He is reasonably physical and has some offensive talent, but he is probably a 4 or 5 d-man. Still, he is better than some of the guys playing big minutes for us. Low risk…signed only through the end of the season at a relatively low amount. Sign him and see what he does. If he’s a “nothing,” let him sign elsewhere this summer. For those on the fence, I only ask, from whom would he take valuable developmental ice time?

  47. 47 Jack

Both GM and coach were goalies. They never had to mix it up like the fowards and d-men do. They just don’t get the enforcer or toughness thing.

  48. 48 MJS

Boynton is a primarily defensive defenseman that, at one point, was pretty solid. For Anaheim he was a third pair D man. He’s basically Brendan Witt, but he skates and shoots a little better. He would be a good add for the Isles. He’s also thrown down a Nate Thompson number of times (3) this season but his opponents have been Derek Boogaard, Steve Ott, and Brad Staubitz. According to everyone at hockeyfights.com he has two losses and a draw, but he’s not afraid to take on tough guys and definitely seems to know his role on the team. He’d be a good add if only because the Isles would have another option at D and plays tougher than most of the guys on the blue line right now. Him and Sutton could form a makeshift shutdown D pairing. It would allow them to return Kohn, who has been averaging like 9 minutes per game, to the A where he can log normal minutes. Also, Boynton was one of only five players on the Ducks with a positive +/- rating. He’d be a good pickup, but I doubt the Isles would actually pick him up, because you know, that might make sense.

  49. 49 Al L

Right now we are in free fall. Tavares is banged up and can barely move, let alone get into the scoring areas,Bergy and Trent consistently miss the net and our ‘D’,without Hillen either are too slow are not strong enough to get the puck out of our own zone. Now that Roloson has cooled off some, our poor defensive core is costing us dearly. If Garth chooses to salvage something from this season,he must shore up the backline and scour the wires for upgrades offensively. I fear Wang has placed a moratorium on spending now that he has met the Cap floor, and for all intents and purposes won’t shell out another penny until he concludes one way or the other what will become of his franchise(Lighthouse?Queens?Brooklyn?Sale?).

  50. 50 Isles22Isles

This already makes Febuary better than January (due to the way in ended).

1st) This great party offer compliments of CB and Social

2nd) I find out today directly from VERIZON FIOS’ office that they will be announcing/offering the ISLANDERS IN HD

    (FINALLY)- FELLOW FIOS SUBSCRIBERS REJOICE

..and now last but not least the potential availablity for next to nothing is something we can use a defenseman with some size and grit (even if he’s only a #6, can’t look a gift horse in the mouth)

  51. 51 dose

i just hope snow is not a guy to not do something just because everyone said he should.

  52. 52 dose

    it seems like a no-brainer.

  53. 53 Eastonhockey

Regardless of the reasons (yashin, injured dipietro, etc) the only thing the isles are good at are being one of the worst 5 teams in hockey since the Wang /snow combo was created. Time to change the regime in islander country no matter how many hall of gamers they think they drafted w/ Tavares okiposo baily.

  54. 54 Sheppy

Easy, Dave. Just because you disagree with someone doesn’t make them wrong. We all have a right to voice an opinion thanks to CB. No one is saying that you don’t, but #48 does, too. Fact is our D sucks. Look it up if you need to. Boynton won’t be any worse than what we’ve got and I say he might be…I said MIGHT be…an upgrade over what we’ve got. I said it above…show me who is so valuable that he will take minutes from. Kohn? Have you been watching what I’ve seen? He has no NHL future. I like Meyer probably more than most, but he is not here long term. Bruno? Flashes and then flash-outs. Witt? Maybe it was the injury, but he has been terrible this year. So, again, please tell me how #48 was so wrong is saying that Boynton might be closer to a physical shut down d-man with Sutton than any other pairing? Do you have more faith in Streit and Gervais? Sutton has arguably been our best d-man. Streit and Hillen have been good, but Sutton has played some strong D, been physical (who else, besides Witt, can you claim that about?), and actually provided a bit of offense.

I have NEVER in my life been part of a more fickle fanbase. We have gone from playoff bound…watch out…to down and out in a week’s time.

  55. 55 (Sim)ple

Easton- No regime change coming. Snow has done a great job forming a base and direction for this team. It wasn’t his fault he took over a team with no direction and one that was poorly built by Mike Milbury. Snow showed he had the guts when he traded for Ryan Smyth at the deadline and has now showed he knows how to rebuild. Seems very versatile to me.

So far you’re right about 2 of 3 years of finishing in the bottom 5. This seasons not done yet. Now I wonder, such a coincidence you post this now and not say 2 weeks ago .

  56. 56 JTorBust

#50 Music to my ears , I have actually considered cancelling FIOS on principal in the past. I heard next year we might even get a radio station that can be hear doutisde the stations parking lot.

  57. 57 Jeff Kuntz

Why is anyone annoyed by the Gillies signing? The Islanders know what they have in him as a person and player..

Maybe they want to have an option to bring in an enforcer whenever they feel the need.. The only way to do that was to sign him to a 2-way deal with the Islanders..

Everyone knew Gillies would be waived and sent back to Bridgeport.. even Gillies.. but now, they have another chip they can play and since the Islanders and Sound Tigers are owned by the same man, his paycheck comes out of the same place.. I think it was a smart move that had zero downside and opened up an option for Gordon on the upside..

As for Boynton.. you know, I don’t watch the Ducks except when they play us.. so if our pro scouts feel he’s an NHL calibre fill-in who’s better than Kohn and/or Gervais, then put in a claim.. We have depth issues on the blue line anyway so if he can play in the league and the money’s that low (comparitively) then we’d be stupid not to - unless he’s an arse of a person.

  58. 58 MJS

Oh, and one last thought and then I’m done. - I’m glad that the state of Islanders Country is such that a hypothetical move like picking up Boynton is stirring up animosity with some people.

  59. 59 a REAL hockey fan

..This team is just REALLY REALLY light in the talent/scoring dept, the numbers DONT LIE!

.. Ive been SCREAMING for some size and sandpaper in this lineup, lord know they need it - they LITERALLY sleepwalk like Zombies out there, i know they need talent and scoring (as well as Dman) but HOLY SH*T they need some GRIT as well..

..Lets be real — how many regular season (Non OT) wins? SRSLY? 12 or 13 out of 55 games? Cmon folks lets be realistic! :-(

  60. 60 Frank nyc

At this point maybe pick up Boynton. As far as tades or anything like that goes i believe you wait as long as possible to see the position the team is in. When u find that out you either buy or sell. Who knows where this team will be by the deadline.

  61. 61 Nick

Love Boyton…especially back in his Boston days…if Garth thinks he has something left in the tank I say grab him

  62. 62 isles316

boynton isn’t very good but heb brings some physical play I guess

  63. 63 RPchief

correct me if I’m wron, but if teh Islanders sign Boynton, They go to the back ofthe waiver wire. Then if some else that they think they may need is waived they have to wait until teh end. They might feel someone more intreging might come along later. CB am I right on the waiver wire?

  64. 64 jonsson3

    Get Grossman from Dallas!!

  65. 65 JPinVA

In regards to Boynton, I’d rather see the Islanders be Part B of Burke’s Bonanza. He has constituted a huge goal deficit in aquiring JS and Dion. He has the $$$ to go after Kovalchuk but he may really need to dump a fat contract to make cap room… and the NYI have something he doesn’t.
first rounder and (Bergy, Tambellini or Comeau) for Komaserik.
Works for Burke because he has a ticket to the dance again in June or the price for Kovalchuk tomorrow.
Works for Snow because he gets another big body on the blueline to create three balanced pairings.
    Streit/Komi
    Hillen/Sutton
    Macdonald/Witt
Next year, that is a nice way to go into the season… and beyond that you have Hamonic, deHaan, Donovan, Katic and Kohn all competing to be ISLANDERS.
Let Boyton float if that’s available.

  66. 66 Eric Nystrom

    ERIC NYSTROM!!!! just because

  67. 67 Chris in DC

I agree with #57. Seems like everyone’s taking out the losing streak on the Gillies one-gamer. Folks, do any of you remember how much Philly has pushed around the Isles this season? It’s been really, really bad. I thought it was imperative we got a banger in there to at least serve as a presence in case some policing was needed.
You’re all getting your undies twisted in a knot cause Trevor Gillies was called up for one game and now he’s been sent back down? Teams do that from time-to-time; ya know, call up a player, demote him etc…

  68. 68 Jack1NJ

    Get boynton, why not…

  69. 69 Boss12

Jokinen to the Rags is a joke…This is the exact model of what we should not do… put together a perennially marginal team that will get destroyed in the playoffs and result in a bad draft pick. That being said the Islanders need toughness and a guy on D, why not give Boynton a try? Kohn can get more ice time for Bridgeport and he didn’t look all that spectacular anyway.

  70. 70 Michael

From what I’ve read Boynton seems like a character guy. A hard hitting defenseman who isn’t afraid to drop the gloves is just the kind of spark this team needs. His +/- suggests that he’s not horrible in his own zone. He’s on the last year of his deal which is valued at $1.5M. We’re talking roughly $700K for the rental. I don’t see the downside to putting in a claim. I believe we’re #5 on the waiver priority list behind Edmonton, Toronto, Carolina, and Columbus. Could be interesting.

  71. 71 ny711ot

Isles 22 did fios give u a definite date? They have been telling me the same thing for 2 years.

  72. 72 isles08025

Pick him up $700K worth it, give kohn more time in Bport, Kohn looked good, but let him season a bit.

I had to laugh and agree with not breaking the trend and putting Sim on waivers to go to bridgeport.

  73. 73 Sean

Does the Rangers getting Jokinen, make them a playoff team now? Thought the isles had a chance to hop them in the standings

  74. 74 The Coliseum Organist

    interesantisimo

  75. 75 Le Dude

On the FiOS thing: Verizon won a court decision that basically said Cablevision can’t block the HD feed. From what I understand, Cablevision can (and being the Dolans, I’m sure the will) appeal. I don’t know if a date for either the airing or the appeal has been set though. I would be amazed if it happened this season - maybe we’ll get it in time for the playoffs, fellas! Playoffs! Playoffs!…oh…wait.

  76. 76 4theisles

Is any one else envious when we see other teams trying to improve and we just read about it and talk about little moves off the waiver wire?

  77. 77 Schultz39

    Get Nick.

  78. 78 islesphan25

this is a smart pickup if it happens, and if not i can see why as well,

that deal for komi would be the worst, do not want to give up any picks, this draft is very deep. stay the course garth

  79. 79 Just Sayin

How do the Rangers get a player of Olli Jokinen’s caliber for two third-line players, yet we can’t get ANYBODY?

It’s moves like the one the Rangers, like the one the Isles haven’t made to get Boynton, that makes me believe Snow is not allowed to add another cent to the payroll until Charles finds out about the Lighthouse.

Is there another explanation? I’m all ears.

  80. 80 Joey303

JP #65 - Why would the Islanders give up a #1 plus a player, for someone they could’ve signed last summer? If your gonna give up a #1 dont do it for a guy whos making 5 mill a year and has 4 assists and 40 PIM in 34 games.

  81. 81 Isles22Isles

    @ ny711ot

No definitive date was given for Verizon to start airing Islanders in HD,was just told 3x by 3 different parties (all while onsite @Fios’ office) including by management (not just rep) that’ll def be in Febuary, and that a formal announcement would follow shortly.

The FCC ruling went in Verizon Fios Favor on 1/20/2010. Dont want to break comment rules, and post websites or direct contact info, but I’m linked to it.

Also you can easily google the FCC part, not sure what you’ll see about the unofficial announcement, but you may find.

  82. 82 Isles22Isles

Back on topic, I’m in favor of pusuing Boynton (why not), and also Eric Nystrom may be a easily obtainable and interesting option, especially considering Calgary’s current state of affairs (bring the kid back to L.I.?!?) ..

Come full circle, may provide some good karma, if nothing else, maybe more, who knows…..

  83. 83 Jersey Steve

Boynton would help our back end without giving up anyone. This way Mac’s minutes can be scaled back and Kohn can get more needed seasoning (although I like his progress) in the Bridge. Plus, the guy has size and toughness and is solid in his own end. To me its a no-brainer, but I’m not the one getting paid the big bucks. (And I’m still in favor of Snow signing Sykora for the rest of the season).

  84. 84 Jon in Chicago

Is it me, or do the Islanders almost never make in-season moves? Maybe they trade a body for a pick at the deadline but they never pick anyone up on waivers and in-season trades are almost non-existent with this franchise.

  85. 85 ERIKA TENCIC

Why is it the rags are always in salary cap trouble—than go out and sign a fairly big name player. We have a good core here. I really don’t care if Garth does anything right now. However, if kovalchuk is not signed by Atlanta, we need to give him whatever it takes to get him on the island. He is young, and a true marquee player who will certainly pay for himself with the rise in attendance. Kovi–Tavares–Okposo–that would propel us straight to the playoffs without hurting the rebuild.

  86. 86 derek

    I’m with Eric Nystrom #66.

IMO a perfect fit for this team. I really hope Snow looks his way. He may not put up many points but I think he’ll do a lot more for this team than a guy like Gillies. He can skate, hit, and take a shot to the head with his own helmet.

  87. 87 MileHighIsle

The Rags went out and got a scorer in Jokinen and one of the toughest middleweights in the league in Brandon Prust. If Brandon Prust was available how come we couldn’t get him? Why do the Isles continue to feel they don’t need fighters or guys to protect their young talent? Lets try and get Rick Rypien from Vancouver so he and Prust can continue their rivalry and epic fights. Rypien would dominate the middleweights in our division.

  88. 88 valentino

I for one would rather see the Isles finish in the bottom 3 one more year instead of just squeaking in he playoffs and getting eliminated. We desperately need more cant miss prospects.

  89. 89 eastonhockey

Wang isn’t interested in spending any more then the absolute minimum on player salarys. Do you think its a coincidence that the Isles are at the cap floor? The NHL is making Wang spend the money on the team..if the last cba didnt include a salary cap floor the team never signs biron, probably trades Sutton this past summer and few other guys and the team payroll would be millions less then it already is. Thank goodness for the last lockout.

  90. 90 Eric Nystrom

I agree with eastonhockey.. don’t look for Wang to spend any money until either the lighthouse project is approved or a move to Brooklyn/Queens is finalized. I don’t blame him.. Anyone who is critical about what Wang has done for the Isles should have their heads examined.

  91. 91 Gary9-19-22

    Boyton is a no brainer…
Nystrom… why not.. I think he improves the 4th line…
Wang spend millions on Chinese hockey charity case… how about the NHL charity case in his own backyard…
I say kee Gillies up not to imtimidate the other team, but to intimidate the Isles. Play with no heart or effort like you have in the past few games and Gillies will kick your a$$!!!!

  92. 92 Will C.

Jokinen is a terd. And now Rag too. Yikes.

  93. 93 Jisles

I scoured the FA list and there was one name that intrigued me and I believe would be a great fit on this team and play huge. Raffi Torres. What surprised me is he is only 28 yrs old and as we all know is a bulldog on skates has scoring touch this is the player garth has to target. I could definatley see him on a second line with bailey who although has done a good job at wing is a true center and that can move nielson back to a 3rd line center. so I would do a sign and trade for him.

  94. 94 valentino

We originally drafted raffi torres. I believe milbury got impatient and traded him a while back.

  95. 95 derek

I’m going to totally disagree with Valentino, the playoffs are a huge step. If the Isles can make it, I think it would help them grow much quicker as a team.
In terms of UFA’s this summer, like Jisles mentioned Raffi is very intriguing. I would definitely hope for a look at him and Nystrom. On D, Paul Martin, Anton Volchenkov, and Marek Zidlicky would all help this team and be a good fit in the system.

  96. 96 Gary9-19-22

I agree with #87… last year to suck is this year…

Package Witt + Biron and eat their entire salary. Even though they are worth little more than a 2nd or 3rd round pick as a package they are work alot more if you give them away for free to a contender. Throw in a charcacter guy like Sim or Park. Maybe throw in Hunter if the right offer is made. We need a Hunter type that can lay left wing. Then package that pick, our existing #2 and #3 and move up at the draft. We have plenty of 2nd and 3rd round talent. We need another high draft pick to compliment the core.

Our Top 5 pick + additional top pick from trades moving up + Kovulchuk (throw the bank at him) + resign Sutton + a another big d-man.

We have nothing but cap room. The only thing holding this team back is the combination of Lighthouse approval and Wang letting loose on the purse strings.

I still say that except for the existing NHL powerhouses the Isles are in better position to build a contender for the next 10 years than anyone in the league.

Privet From Russia-30 fairenheit today here!
For all the positive things the Islander Organization has accomplished in a relatively short time , This has cotinued to be mind - boggling to me??

I respect Garth Snow & Scott Gordon having never doubted the Gm & only early on questioned Gordon.
Again No Question from this life long Hockey Guy/Fan
they are more then adequate for the job at hand!

Maybe it’s something bigger then them?
    Who Knowes?
Yet No question not having someone with a Physical Prescense who can do more then just be a punching Bag has hurt this club.
You want proof look, at our record against a team we will likely finish behind an out of the top 8.
We are winless against Philly this year, and they are not one of the top teams in the league, yet they know exactly how to beat us.
Hopefully after this agenda has run its course, we will have a player who can be a real physical force.
Skating,, checking & dropping the mits.,all in one game ..
“WOW”, now that will be a revelation.
Then Quite Possibly we will have taken the last step in
the restoration of the Pride-n-Passion, That used to be
    known as N.Y. Islander Hockey!
Rebuilds and adding key Pieces take time, Defending Teamates , Playing Physical, (when need be)
Showing Pride & Honoring those who have played this style in our Ole’ Barn over many years, “DOES NOT .
The Rags by adding Prust show they understand they are getting pushed around, (Brashshear is done like dinner)now how about us?
    Lets Go Isles….Lets Go Islanders!!!

  98. 98 James

You guys are making it seem like Jokinen is a big deal?

All he is, is yet another goal scorer that wont do jack for the Rangers. They did nothing to improve their line up, so stop complaining.

Isles will be fine, fact that we are even in the playoff race is a vast improvement over last season. Yes I agree the team hasn’t played well at all the last 5 games, but let’s not pretend the Isles are the only team struggling right now. There are more established teams that were considered playoff caliber teams at the start of the season, that are struggling just as much as we are.

So don’t over-analyze this losing streak, it is just another valley in a season that always has its ups and downs for all 30 NHL teams.

  99. 99 Eric Nystrom

James.. The Rag$ cut salary by getting rid of dead weight. Jokinen is a free agent so they will cut him lose.. Horrible deal by the Flames!

  100. 100 Spartiarti-RVC

Boyton is too slow for the uptempo game we play. It will be like having another Witt.

Gillies being waived is just b/c they have to. No sleep would be lost if he was picked up anyway.

its like missing nate thompson. Nate 4 games in tampa, 0G, OA 7shot total, 2PIMS.

  101. 101 ExtraButterRVC

I never liked Jokinen. Never will…i don’t believe he’s that good.

I’m 100% for Boynton, but mostly because I’m 100% against Bruno.

  102. 102 Joe

Boynton cleared, I hope Snow is fired soon.

  103. 103 lefty

Bob McKenzie just “tweet” (or “tweeted”?) that Boynton cleared waivers. :(

  104. 104 Atari8bit

Per Bob McKenzie, Boynton has cleared waivers. Isles don’t make a move to shore up depth at low cost.

  105. 105 thepolishprince

I agree with James @ 99 on the Ollie move. It’s more to free up cap space than anything else I think. The beginning of Sather making a move for Kovi in July probably.

  106. 106 CJCB

With fighting still on the rise in the NHL, the Isles continue to show they r one or two steps behind everyone else. I now continue my ban on watching Isles hockey till they get an Enforcer in the lineup on a regular basis. Team on most nights is an incredibly boring watch. I also would never pay the upwards of atleast $400.00 it would cost my family to go to a game to sit in my seat for 60 min with little to cheer about in a 2-1 game with supersoft players like the skeleton like Bruno Gervais? Why they r against a fighter is beyond me its not like our 3rd and 4th liners are any good they are in all the bottom categories like 28th best pk and such.

  107. 107 JP

Hey Garth now tell Trevor what he won, Well Thanks for playin Trevor, nows here’s your consoliation kick in the a$$. This team is a mess, starting at the top and going to the guy who sweeps the parking lot. Thank God For Schremp, Tambs and Nielsen in the shoot outs otherwise we would have 12 regulation wins this season. The NHL should seriously investigate why we have 43,000,000 in cap room and a combined payroll of 6,700,000. Its disgusting…

  108. 108 Al L

As a followup to my comment at #49,should the Isles be sellers at the trade deadline and decide to move one of their higher salaried players for an inexpensive prospect, they could be in danger of falling under the Cap floor. Again,it is evident where he is now is just where Wang wants to be until he knows where he is taking his Franchise. Its quite frustrating pondering the possibility that our owners enviable Cap space in going to burn a hole in his pocket, while some other team desperately maneuvers to put themselves in a position to acquire Illya Kovalchuk or another difference maker.

  109. 109 RobC

If FIOS starts broadcasting MSG in HD I would be so friggen happy. Fios is great but watching my Isles thru a dirty window, blows.

  110. 110 bomber24

    Garth,
Please bring up haley to center gillies and wrecker. Then I will
come back to the coliseum and pay to watch some entertaining
hockey. Disney on ice, is a more physical event than an Islanders game.
