  1. avatar admin says:

Good afternoon, Islanders Country. Best wishes to Scott Gordon and Team USA as they take on Finland at 3:00 pm to meet the winner of Canada-Slovakia.

  2. avatar admin says:

Standing in the USA’s way, of course, is the Kipper. If the Finnish goalie is on his game, this will be a struggle for the USA.

  3. avatar potvin rocks says:

The Finnish are a defensive style system and hopefully the US can find the soft spots and score some early goals to force them to play out of their comfort level.
    I’ve been nervous all day.

  4. avatar Schultz39 says:

Need to pick up the physical play – the Finns are by far the most physical Euro team out there. Need a big game also from Parise and Kessel. Let’s go US….and let’s go Slovakia (ZIGGY)

  5. avatar brian says:

love to see a ziggy hat trick beat the canadians

  6. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

    It’s Miller Time.

  7. avatar a REAL hockey fan says:

.. Im with ya CB on the weather, NO MORE SNOW! PLZ we have had enough snow!

.. The USA needs another great effort from Miller in net and play a physical good all around game!

.. Lets go USA, go get em boyzz!!!

  8. avatar AJAX says:

    Hey CB,
Will you be at the Isles Meet & Greet dinner in March?

  9. avatar Dennis says:

Does anyone know if any local radio is carrying the game? No one is in the office today so i will hijack someone’s radio if I can get a signal…..

  10. avatar Steve says:

did we really get a goal like that

  11. avatar Staten Islander says:

    WOW! he screwed up BIG!

  12. avatar german islesfan says:

Good luck for team USA ;-) I root for team Finland since my childhood and so i’am with Bergy and hope Finland win this closed game.

  13. avatar admin says:

Like I said, Kipper is the most important player today. So far he has one assist!

  14. avatar Islesphan25 says:

This is why the Flames will never win…Kipper is a bad big game goalie….that was a bad mistake..

  15. avatar mike 8 says:

is that kipper or rick dp in goal?

  16. avatar goteamgo says:

no radio, but u can watch it on nbc’s website..

  17. avatar admin says:

    (9) You mean the charity dinner at Rothmann’s, Ajax?

  18. avatar brian says:

    Botte on Twitter:

Wow, DP is playing in this game, after all.

    haha… funny stuff

  19. avatar schnip says:

    what happened with the goal

  20. avatar schnip says:

with no way to see or hear the goal, i need details… please

  21. avatar AJAX says:

(18)CB – No, the Bobby Ny & Billy Smith gig

  22. avatar brian says:

21… kiprusoff came out to play the puck… way out of his net… malone stole it and put it into empty net

  23. avatar Mike from VA says:

Kiprusoff gives the Americans a gift. He skates out to pick up a dumped-in puck and sends a soft pass to Sami Lepisto. Malone picks it off and wrists it into the empty cage. The Americans are pumped. Another fast start for Team USA
-Stolen from Sport Illustrated Blog. (at work :( )

  24. avatar schnip says:

    thanks, please keep em coming

  25. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    you can watch online

  26. avatar rob76 says:

Any time Parise scores it makes me angry…even for USA

  27. avatar schnip says:

    corp blocks all streaming media

  28. avatar Chris TMC says:

    WHOOOOOOO!
    2-zip USA! :D
    Parise = awesomeness.

  29. avatar Dennis says:

Some of us can’t watch online because the filters at work block video

  30. avatar Mike from VA says:

God how did we pass on parise :(

  31. avatar Staten Islander says:

2-0, Devils and ex Devils have been huge in this tourney

  32. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

I love Parise’s game but every time I see him the first thing that comes to mind is Robert Nilsson. Robert Nilsson!

  33. avatar brian says:

If either Okposo or Tavares ever become as good as Zach Parise and as clutch, the Islanders will be VERY fortunate.

  34. avatar Staten Islander says:

    3-0, this is getting stupid

  35. avatar Iron Islander77 says:

Great Start. Getting Kipper off his game early is a huge advantage.

  36. avatar Chris TMC says:

3-0, this is getting GREAT! :D

  37. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

    Timeout Finland!

  38. avatar Staten Islander says:

4-0, Kipper taking himself out. Fins doing their Russians impression

  39. avatar goteamgo says:

    mikka dipeitro pulls himself

  40. avatar Dennis says:

Keep the updates coming boys!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

  41. avatar Iron Islander77 says:

    4-0 CRAZY!

  42. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

I thought the Finnish coach said he never pulls goalies?

  43. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    wow….

Kipper is horrible in big games…you could see this a mile away….

  44. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

    Kipper pulls himself?!(no pun intendended)

  45. avatar DoubleW says:

a complete repeat of 2002 Olympic Hockey? Canada USA in Men’s and Ladies

  46. avatar Kascycki's Krew says:

Hope our men’s team is smoking stogies and drinking molson’s in victory after the game on Sunday!

  47. avatar admin says:

Ajax: I know of no Ny/Smitty thing. If it’s a team event, I’m not affiliated with the team in any way, so I would not be there.

  48. avatar Steve says:

5-0 this is not what i expected

  49. avatar admin says:

    USA 5, Finlarus 0

  50. avatar Jim Clark says:

If the NHL redid the 2003 draft, where would Parise go? Penguins drafted Fleury and won a cup with him. There are other good players like Staal and Zherdev. So maybe number 2???

  51. avatar goteamgo says:

    a total laugher 6-0

  52. avatar Steve says:

6-0 nothing this is out of control, they just keep coming, 2 goals in 15 seconds

  53. avatar Staten Islander says:

ok, everytime i take my eyes off the tube they score

  54. avatar DoubleW says:

6-0? is this the Finnish women’s team?

  55. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

Makes me feel even worse for KO who should be a part of what looks like something special.

  56. avatar Jim Clark says:

CB, I saw a tweet about you responding to Stan Fischler comment about the hockey is pick up games involving millionaires. Actually wasn’t that the original attention of the Olympics in 1890s? Only the rich could afford to train/go to these events.

It’s like people say we should send amateurs in 1980. The reason why that is so remembered is Soviet Union players like Tretiak, Kharmalov and Fetisov were professionals to any intelligent person which did not include the IOC.

  57. avatar AJAX says:

CB – It’s the dinner at Social that you hope your freinds at Fanhouse & PB would pack the place for (02/01/10 post by you).
    I made my reservation.

  58. avatar Chris TMC says:

    Its a frickin blowout!

  59. avatar admin says:

Oh, I hear ya, Ajax. That’s an event at Social that I gave a plug to but made clear in the post it’s not a PB event. It’s Ny and Bossy, not Smitty. If Social will have me, I will stop by, yes. Thanks.

  60. avatar felix says:

if it is such a blow out time to take miller out for the second and third and rest him for the next gaem

  61. avatar AJAX says:

Sorry, my bad, its been a long day, not as long as FINLANDS though. HAHAHA

  62. avatar Vealchop says:

CB, have you ever seen Gordon smile? During this USA/Fin blowout they showed him 3 times after a goal and he wasnt even close to smiling. He seems so serious.

BTW- once again great job on the IPB site. You are a savior to many Islander fans. Thanks for everything.

  63. avatar Kascycki's Krew says:

Key thing – as the game marches on and the score remains lopsided – is for our guys not to get hurt.

  64. avatar Jim Clark says:

Maybe Chris Drury does have great leadership skills.

  65. avatar admin says:

    (63) Thanks, vc. After the fourth goal, NBC caught Scott pumping his fist and smiling. I think even the U.S. coaches cannot believe what they just saw.

  66. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

Maybe it’s because he’s a Rag, but it really bothers me that Callahan is on this team and not KO. He hasn’t had much ice time and I’ve seen him make some poor decisions with the puck. I know the team is winning – so no one is second guessing the decision to include him.

  67. avatar AJAX says:

I hope Garth is working the phones right now

  68. avatar Pd says:

atleast finland is giving us a challenge? All I know is this team proved me wrong, I thought this team would be awful but yet they are showing that you don’t need all the big superstars to win a Gold.

  69. avatar Iron Islander77 says:

Team USA actually has role players, unlike the Canadian all star errr I mean Olyumpic team.

I still what the Slovaks to bust some maple leaf butt tonight!

  70. avatar brian says:

it’s be 8-0 if okpo was on the team

  71. avatar doug says:

    CB,

Do you think the Islanders might try and sign someone from the Olympics? Roman Wick of Switzerland comes to mind. He seems to have good size and has pretty good hands.

    Thanks,

    Doug

  72. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    CB….

I know players get alot of experience from playing in things like this…You think Gordon’s getting any experience being apart of this and being around players like this

  73. avatar JGE says:

I like that Ryan Callahan isn’t even a pimple on the butt of team USA

  74. avatar admin says:

    (72) No, I do not see the Islanders signing anyone out of the Olympics.

  75. avatar Ed from Philly says:

I’ve seen Callahan block a whole lot of shots this tourney.

  76. avatar doug says:

    CB,

too bad…I think while they should be sellers (Sutton and Roli), I would try and bring someone that can help. We’re only 6 points out of a playoff spot albeit there are a lot of teams ahead of us.

    Doug

  77. avatar admin says:

    (73) No question, this is a very good experience for Scott. I know he’s learned plenty dealing with Ron Wilson the last few months.

  78. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

I’ve also seen Callahan give away the puck in the defensive zone on more than one occasion.

  79. avatar Jay says:

If KO was on the team, the US wouldn’t be playing for gold, the gold would be playing for KO!

  80. avatar Lorne says:

Wow, I just turned on the game since I was digging of my driveway. I saw it was 6-0, I am like is this a joke. Good thing it is not.

  81. avatar Ed from Philly says:

He and Drury were incremental in their win over Canada. They really got into the shooting lanes when Canada was flurrying. It’s funny seeing the attacks being thrown around. Just because they play for the Rangers will not make me root any less for them. Since they are playing for Team USA, they are playing for my team. I felt the same way in 96 when Richter stole the show for the US.

  82. avatar C.J. says:

Time to get the scrubs some ice time… drury, callahan, kessel.

Oh… and Oli Jokinen is a slug. Typical Ranger move. He belongs on that team.

  83. avatar C.J. says:

You’re right Ed (#81), Callahan is a great PKer. That’s about it.

  84. avatar Paul says:

Callahan and Drury were only picked to kill penalties (and also in Drury’s case to score clutch goals like Chris Drury does). This was far and away the most underrated decision Burke made with this team because they have been a very good pair killing penalties. Not many other teams have been as good on the PK as the Americans in this tournament due to those two.

Also, although I would have like to see KO there, I think the first player I would have added to the roster would have been Oshie. Just think Oshie is an incredible playmaker.

  85. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

Richter deserved to be there…there’s a difference.

  86. avatar TradeUp says:

6-0 four min left in second.

  87. avatar Smitty031 says:

if the united states does medal in these games…does go-go get one too?

  88. avatar admin says:

    They ARE medalling.

  89. avatar Eric says:

Oh damn my bad he was drafted by Ottawa. Another good draftee by the Sens. This Wick guy has really impressed me in this tournament.

  90. avatar Brother Rat says:

I’m so glad to hear about the litter of David Backes’ pregnant, formerly-stray boxer. This is why the Olympics is unlike any other event. Sheesh. Thanks, Doc.

  91. avatar TradeUp says:

6-0 still at end of 2nd

  92. avatar Brian G says:

Work those phones Snow – get some top prospects not just picks

  93. avatar BrassBonanza says:

How did Bergy not make this Finnish team? When do the Isles return to practice?

  94. avatar Kascycki's Krew says:

I think Okposo would have been terrific with this team – but its winning without him. Gosh, I hate having Rags on our team….but I gotta hold my nose and GO USA ! Okposo will be a stud player on the next version of Team USA if we go to the Olympics. If we don’t make playoffs – and they still have the World Championships – send Okposo. The internal politics and goodwill team USA would feel towards him would be in his camp going forward.

  95. avatar Brother Rat says:

This whole argument that the NHL may or may not send its players to Sochi is a non-issue. Of course they will. They’ve hedged about whether the players would return in 2002 and 2006, and perhaps earlier…and of course the exposure’s worth shutting the league down for a bit. I feel like this Bettman interview could have been 4 or 8 years ago, except that he mysteriously ditched his tie. Where does he think he is? Key West? Catching the night session at the US Open?

  96. avatar boss15 says:

First of all, terrible game. Finland just doesn’t produce any great players anymore Kurri, Lumme, Selenne, Numminen, even Tikkanen were all excelling in the 90′s now they have tons of good goalies but little else.

  97. avatar doug says:

I heard that the US IOC pays for the coaches to get medals. So I believe he will get one.

  98. avatar Billymac23 says:

iIWaiting for the fanbase here to eat some crow. I remember when the team was named and everyone said it was awful, Burke did a abad job, KO should be on the team, etc.
Newsflash, the USA will win at least silver, and KO isn’t on the team. As an Isles fan, I would love to see KO there, but there’s nothing wrong with giving credit where it’s due. Burke did a good job, and Drury and Callahan have played well and done their jobs.

  99. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Anyone notice that Gary Bettman in that interview said it’s great for the NHL because their playing in an NHL arena, with NHL players and NHL rules?

Since when did the NHL start using automatic icing? That one got by me.

  100. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Billymac … I’m one of those marinating my crow right now. I think Burke did a good job getting the right players to play this kind of hockey … But … it remains to be seen if the USA can repeat and beat the Canadian all-star team again. If I’m Canada I have an axe to grind, and I want to swing that axe at team USA … they just have to solve Miller.

  101. avatar Paul says:

19 Isle: since when did the NHL ban fighting too?

  102. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    Classy Move by the coaches….

  103. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

… agreed Paul … I didn’t even think of that one.

I also have to say … I think Kyle would of fit the profile of the perfect kind of player for this international play. He’s got experience … and is the kind of go through a brick wall player every team can use.

  104. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

    Ouch… shutout streak broken.

  105. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

I feel bad for Tim … comes in cold and is expected to hold a shutout … well … expected might be too strong … I bet he expected that of himself.

  106. avatar Iron Islander77 says:

Man – Thomas just blew the shut out. One year wonder.

  107. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    wasn’t his fault….

did you see JJ say it was off of him

  108. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

yeah Islesphan … it wasn’t TT’s fault … and it was big of JJ to let him know.

  109. avatar admin says:

Not a whole lot to add since the 6-0 lead. Thanks to everyone for hangin’. Enjoy the rest of the Olympics…CB

  110. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Will you have this again on Sunday

  111. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Thanks CB for doing this … always entertaining

  112. avatar Staten Islander says:

    Thanks CB, fun as always

  113. avatar Jim Clark says:

This is what happens when Finland can’t find a spot for Sean Bergenheim.

  114. avatar Neil says:

Have to believe Scott Godon would be next in line for head coaching duties in 2014. Assuming he’s still in the NHL :)

  115. avatar john says:

I wonder what the NHL salaries would be for each team.

  116. avatar DoubleW says:

Good luck Team USA on Sunday. Assuming it is Canada, Miller has to play like Richter of 1996 or Hasek of 1998

  117. avatar Chris TMC says:

I think its wonderful that they gave Tim Thomas some olympic time. It was the opportunity of a lifetime for for the guy, he looked fine, and as others have pointed out that goal was not weak at all.

AND… there is the psychological bonus of Miller not being the one to give it up. Dont underestimate that! ;)

Anyway- Go Slovakia! Go Ziggy! Go Miro! Go Big Z! Go Zednik lol! :D

  118. avatar Blizzard says:

….so CB assuming Canada beats Slovakia who will you be routing for? Canada or the USA?….lol.

  119. avatar TimQ says:

Another team putting up a Eurotrash effort!!!!!

  120. avatar Eric says:

Bergenheim isn’t that good and often injured, that is why he did not make th Finland team. Bergenheim just doesn’t produce. Unless he proves me wrong next season, Bergenheim just isn’t that good. I was high on him 3 and 4 years ago but now not so much.

  121. avatar joe says:

nice win, my U.S american friends. When CANADA wins over Ziggy ( sign him for the remainder of this season). It will be beer drinking in the streets again!!!! GO CANADA GO>>>>>>>>

  122. avatar Dan says:

If all goes as planned it is the USA vs CANADA on Sunday. The part that I really find amazing is that you have two seperate teams going for the gold but a few of these players are teamates in the NHL. So Crosby is driving to the net and Brooks Orpick(?) named after Herb Brooks interesting enough trying to stop him. In his mind at the moment he knows he has to stop him or take him down. But also somewhere in his mind he knows the Penguins will not win the cup without Crosby so it is an interesting delimea on what to do. I would guess instinct takes over.

  123. avatar Original Rob says:

Wow, when does Ryan Getzlaf hit free agency? 2013? He needs to be the final piece behind the Islanders rebuilding and ultimate contender status. He is big, strong, physical, tough and extremely skilled. Just the type of player the Isles sorely need.

  124. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Be careful what you wish for Canada because he we come.

  125. avatar joe says:

reply to #123 lights out crosby!!!!!!!!!!!
