CHARLES WANG TALKS ABOUT NYI TRIP TO CHINA
Biron to have short conditioning stint in AHL

by admin on February 2nd, 2010 at 6:24 pm

Read Jeff Klein’s story with Charles Wang’s thoughts on his team’s nine days of training camp in China. (The Islanders then play an exibition game in Saskatoon). In other news, Martin Biron has agreed to a conditioning stint in Bridgeport. His trade value remains a third-round pick…maybe.

How about some comments on the Lighthouse, Chuck?

  2. avatar Chris says:

Nice article. Say what you want about Charles, but the last paragraph just sums up how classy and caring he is. He genuinely cares about the team and the players. Can’t say that about a lot of pro sports owners. Most look at it as a tax deduction.

  3. avatar Staten Islander says:

I agree, news on the lighthouse, not this

  4. avatar 2Bit says:

    Shaolin Slapshot?

  5. avatar FourCupsin4yearsnot60 says:

Does this mean Marty might get an NHL game in before the break?

  6. avatar Scott VanVoorhees says:

I think this will be a real bonding adventure for the team and do some good for the youth in the area. It shows Charles is still dedicated to this team and the sport. Hope something moves out of the muck for a new home on the Island. As I said, we’ll take them here in Williamsburg, but you’ll have to teach the locals that you drink beer at a hockey game, not brandy.

  7. avatar znatokhokkeya says:

who cares about trip to China. how about a few wins and climbing a few steps up in the standing

  8. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Scott (#5), I totally agree. This absolutely shows that CW has no plans to sell the team. Noting that, coupled with the fact that this guy won’t ever leave Long Island (even if the team does), I’d like to think this is a very positive development. Most teams that are “winding down” operations don’t set up grand plans to train in a foreign nation that can only be used to make the Isles “the” team for China and its billions of people. All in all, it just shows to me that there’s more to the Lighthouse project than we’re hearing. Either way, the future of the franchise in the NYC area is clearly strong if the guy who would probably sell if they moved anywhere else is still dreaming up these grand ideas for the future.

  9. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

Can we pull a Billy Guerin on this trade? A 3rd rounder straight up that turns into a 2nd rounder if the team wins one playoff round??? lol

  10. avatar Barry says:

    CB-

At what point does this organization turn the corner regarding focusing more about the on ice product than things like a trip to China? No one cares! No one should either for that matter. If you do your sheep.

Any news outside of the Lighhouse or current on ice product such as trips to China, father/son trips on the road, Sparky the Dragon, The Ice Girls, and other stupid pet tricks are irrelevant.

Believe me this information is not appreciated. It just detours those that follow this information from the depressing team we have to watch on the ice right now. Yes I still watch!

Come on Mr. Wang, keep your eye on the ball!

  11. avatar eastonhockey says:

Since Wang bought the Islanders around 10 years ago, hundreds of playoff rounds have been won in the NHL by hockey teams. THe Islanders? Not a single 1. Despite Wangs millions donated to Stony Brook, china,etc..the fact is he is a utter failure as a Hockey Owner. If you consider winning important at least..

  12. avatar Peter says:

#5. Its probably more a showcase more than anything.

  13. avatar Peter says:

#9. How many years in a row did we MISS the playoffs before Wang. Baby Steps, its gonna happen.

He saved this franchise (on LI) as far as I’m concerned.

  14. avatar Frank nyc says:

Is Biron going to the Bridge a showcase for potential trade partners? or it could be to attract the trade partners with a goalie who has played recently as opposed to one who hasnt played in over a month.

  15. avatar Vrinqueens says:

China?, that’s what he wants to talk about?!!! Not the right time in a middle of a losing streak and dropping like a rock in the standings.

  16. avatar Steven says:

I also want to hear more on the Lighthouse and what ever happened with the new lease? It would be nice to hear some news.

  17. avatar EJ-1since40 says:

Geez, in the middle of a losing streak, dmen dropping like flies, DP’s health, LHP, 3 points out of a playoff spot, Ilya Kolvachuck on the market, ect. And here we are discussing NEXT year’s pre-season in China!!?? Wow..

  18. avatar eric says:

Listen I think Wang has learned from his mistakes. Keep an inept GM like mike milbury around, giving DP a 15 year contract, constructing is “by committee” approach that Neil Smith did not like, which I cant blame him. But unfortunately Islanders fans have dealt with the mistakes the last one not being that big of a deal because I think Garth Snow is doing a good job. Where is Neil Smith right now? I mean is there ANY ANY news on the Lighthouse? Its amazing how this story has just died down after all the news in the summer and meetings, etc. We’re not that far away from another summer!

  19. avatar Chris TMC says:

Look we all want to know wth is going on with the Lighthouse. But I have to say, one of the best things about this season is the fact that people have been talking about the TEAM more than the arena. If theres something to say about the LH, he is gonna say it. Why wouldnt he??? Dont get mad at him because the TOH hasnt done jack. What is the guy going to say?

As far as him talking about the China trip, why get mad at him for answering the questions a reporter asked him? If any of us want different questions asked, then our problem is with the ones choosing the questions- not with the ones answering them.

  20. avatar bloodyskull says:

3rd round pick for Marty? I will drive him to the airport. It shocks me that a GM would offer a top 90 pick for Marty Biron. Guerin fetched us a 5th or 6th rounder last year? I realize it is a goalie however I watched every start of Marty’s this year.

  21. avatar Terry99 says:

I think Wang is a classy guy and his heart is in the right place but…this has a good chance of backfiring. Long flights, crazy time zones, inferior competition and mixed lines with the chinese national team….yeech.Three cities in 10 days and now lets all go off to Saskatoon. But yes this appears like Wang has no thoughts of selling the team. It’s actually good news if you don’t mind the 2011 Isles start the season 3-12.

  22. avatar MJS says:

#20 – Guerin fetched us a 3rd rounder. It was escalating, it started as a 5th, then went to a 4th, then a 3rd. Something similar to that for Biron would probably be pretty reasonable. Actually, it would be better than reasonable and would probably only happen if he was traded to a contender and he played significant minutes.

Also, why is everyone whining about this China article? The Isles next game is Thursday. I would’ve appreciated an article about the Lighthouse over China, but if nothing’s happening with that, and the Isles aren’t playing, then what else is there to talk about really? Do you want to see a couple days worth of players and coaches saying, “we need to play better”? Doesn’t that get repetitive?

  23. avatar Steven says:

I’ve be in CW’s corner. I do think we should at lease get some comments regarding the lease deal that happened before the new year and what it means for the team and fans. I’m not shocked the team is struggling now. It’s year 2 of the rebuild and more work needs to be done. If we get to the summer and there is still no news regarding the future of the Isles it’s going to be even tougher to land the big free agent. It’s tough enough as it is. There needs to be some closure to the off ice issues.

  24. avatar Bob says:

As already stated, (Charles, I hope you read the blog) most Islander fans could give a rat’s a– about training camp in China. Address the issues at hand like what’s going to be done about the current state of the Islanders on and off the ice.

  25. avatar RobC says:

This is great for comaradarie. Wang definatly has grown love and is attached to his team and the players.

  26. avatar Sheppy says:

Save the money that it would cost to transport the d*** team to China and invest it in player contracts! China??? WTF? Focus on the real development…not on international development.

  27. avatar Dorfer81 says:

The wrong goalie is being given the conditioning stint.

Still think the China trip is very cool, especially the experience for the players. Man, what lives they lead.

  28. avatar RobC says:

This is great for comaradarie. Wang definatly has grown love and an attachment to his team and the players. On opening day, Wang came out to drop the ceremonial 1st puck and when he walked by the bench, he greeted the players. The last player was Okposo, Wang and KO kind of looked at each other, shook hand and laughed. You can see in their interaction that they like each other and have a friendly relationship. It showed Wang likes these guys. He wants this team to succeed.

  29. avatar dominla says:

how dare he talk about something other than the lighthouse. shame shame on you wang. i think in the future he should consult islander fans before he does anything. because you know… if that happens it will be rainbows and butterflies for years to come.

  30. avatar Glen S says:

And maybe a real radio broadcast team again. And yes CW some new’s on the LHP would be great, is it on and shovel in the ground this year. I think it’s getting to the breaking point is it YES or NO in regard to the LHP. Way to QUIET for way to LONG!!!!!

  31. avatar Merrick says:

I do think it’s a great experience for the players and I hope it continues to bond the team.

However, CW said, “When they see . . . Tiananmen Square, it’ll just blow them away”

Not exactly the best choice of words for those who remember the protests against the government a few years back.

  32. avatar Quietman says:

How about Rollies trade value? Why not sign Biron to an extension and keep him to pair with DP. I mean does anybody think we’re gonna get out of the first round if we make the playoffs? Rollies playing pretty well for a 40 year old guy but its not going to last forever. He’s no Martin Brodeur If we can get something to build on for next year, I say trade him if the price is right.

  33. avatar Chris TMC says:

Dorfer81 (24): The only goalie the Isles CAN send on a conditioning stint is going on one- or do you want to send Roloson and DiPietro through waivers?

  34. avatar Willis says:

Awwww, Papa Wang, that’s cute! And a great idea, good for him and good for all involved. I’m okay with it.

Did anyone else read about them playing a Chinese team and think “so THAT’S why these players are so small!!!” hahahaha I know, I’m going to hell but I had a good laugh, and anyway I don’t don’t have a grudge against the guy I just had a funny thought..lol

  35. avatar (Sim)ple says:

Why should he talk about the lighthouse? Nothing is happening on that front and if you think that’s his fault you’re mistaken. The ToH has only had a few years to review the project and nothing happened until Wang went on the offensive. He did in the summertime in order to not have it be a distraction. Chris made a great point about focusing on the TEAM.

And those bashing him for this China trip just dont see the bigger picture. This is great for the organization, the franchise, and the Islanders brand in general. Are you all just so annoyed about this team the last 2 weeks that you’ll knock anything associated with it?

The man has kept this franchise afloat for a decade and all people can bark at is spending more money. Why spend extra money on the team now? No quick fixes for a rebuilding team, it already set us back once. Besides, save that $ for FAs and extensions for our young stars.

  36. avatar isleBwatchingU says:

Biron should be able to fetch a similar deal that they got for Guerin. That 5th round conditional pick, that turned into a 3rd for Bill would be real nice for the upcoming draft.

Oh, and I think this China thing is being blown out of proportion. They are going for 10 days. Let me repeat, 10 days. Everyone here whining about it makes it seem like they’re playing all their 2010-11 regular season games there. Get over it! Its brilliant marketing.

  37. avatar Keith says:

Wonder if Tambellini gets scratched for the trip?

  38. avatar Pete DeBenedetto says:

Just read the article……great job Charles!!! This is going to be an experience for these kids on the team, the organization, and the NHL. The Islanders will be the focal point of all of that as well. There must be some sort of financial relief too. That experience blows away any they would have in some rinkie dink Canadian city….nothing against rinkie dink. Who knows, maybe the Islanders find the next BIG thing out of Asia.

  39. avatar Madchef says:

this team never does anything exciting

  40. avatar rb says:

Can Ricky’s ticket to China be one-way?

  41. avatar Blizzard says:

……I cant believe I am saying this but if there is someone who is playoff bound and needs a goalie bad Rollie might fetch something significant. Agree with #32.

  42. avatar IslesinOside says:

I think Chuck is threatening the TOH and Kate Murray to move the Lighthouse Project to China.
Wow….. I don’t know if I could make it there by 7:05 for Home games during the week….not to mention the drive home.

  43. avatar JP says:

Putting a winning product on the ice will fill seats, not taking a publicity stunt trip to China. The only good thing about being in year 12 of our 5 year plan is that I pay my bills alot easier since giving up my season tickets. Biron is on the trading block (FACT), thats the only reason he is going to Bridgeport. He will get the conditioning he needs for an NHL return somewhere else. Him and maybe Witt are the only guys that move before the deadline.

  44. avatar Eastonhockey says:

Witt? Moved? I wonder if he would pass through wavers. I would be very surprised. He’s useless n signed for next season. To bad he doesn’t fight more often they could make him a winger.

  45. avatar mtrico says:

IMHO, anyone who doesn’t like Charles Wang just doesn’t get it.

  46. avatar RobC says:

Is Wang wants to spend money on a trip to China with his beloved team then he has every right to. Its not like he’s saying “since the LHP isn’t happening I’ll spend my money and attention on China instead”. He’s a rich man and with that comes the power to do special things and he has every right to do so. Good for Wang, the team, hockey, and China.

  47. avatar cgs878 says:

I guess Wang has to grow his business somehow. He might as well try China. It’s not exactly fan-friendly to have the Islanders in China for the preseason, but oh well. Good luck to them.

  48. the usual haters are out in full force again, which means it’s probably a good thing to do. this may be instrumental in securing the funds to build that place that is supposed to stop making the haters be haters.

personally i’m just waiting for the days when i hear those people whining about how they miss the crowded concourse and the wraparound bathroom lines because it was a “real hockey arena”

  49. avatar Gutty34 says:

Guys – are you all kidding. Bashing Wang for the opportunity to expose this team to millions of fans. Dont forget – this team needs – sorry – must find ways to generate additional income to support us. This is a fantastic idea by Wang – one that we should see discussed despite whats happening on the ice. One week ago many of you were so blinded by the winning that you got wayyyyyy ahead of the rebuild. Wang IS the only hope this team ever has of staying on the Isles. Stop abusing him already. This article clearly shows he cares about this team, players and the game. So sick of hearing the ups and downs of you all. Just stick by the team, by Charles, by Garth and enjoy the building of a great team. It takes time. Unfortunately there is a real business side to this game and Wang needs to find any revenue stream out there. The fact that he is thinking about next year (meaning he will own the team) has to have some underlying tone to something moving along with the Lighthouse. Open your eyes and see the hidden message instead of bashing every opportunity. Thats enouhg of my ranting :) LGI!

  50. avatar MN says:

Thank you Gutty. You are so TRUE.
