CHICAGO at ISLANDERS, 7:00 pm
Flyers, Hawks pursuing deal for Dwayne Roloson

by admin on March 2nd, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Chris Botta on Twitter

Noon, NVMC: A league source tells Point Blank that Dwayne Roloson is at the top of the Philadelphia Flyers’ wish list to solve their goaltending troubles.

“Roloson’s number ($2.5 million) for next year is not a hindrance in the Flyers’ view,” said the source. “They’re looking at a few goalies, Marty Biron included, but Paul Holmgren is very interested in Roloson.”

The Flyers placed goalie Ray Emery on the Long Term Injury list yesterday. By waiving Riley Cote and Danny Syvret over the last week, they have created $2 million in salary cap space – plenty enough to absord Roloson’s prorated salary for this year and acquire another impact player such as Nashville defenseman Dan Hamhuis.

Other teams, including tonight’s opponent – the Chicago Blackhawks - are interested in Roloson as well. Roloson, who was superb this season until his everyday work was interrupted by the return of Rick DiPietro, starts tonight.

One thing about DiPietro’s setback: it gives Snow an honest reason to tell his fellow GMs, “I don’t need to trade a goalie. With Rick out again, I could easily stand pat.” DiPietro’s absence – per Katie Strang, the GM is meeting with the goalies doctors tonight – also gives Snow cover with his fanbase if he doesn’t make an impact move.

With the trade deadline at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, Snow is in strong position to acquire value for Roloson and Andy Sutton – his two trading chips of significance.

*

Bailey – Tavares – Okposo

Moulson – Nielsen – Hunter

Comeau – Schremp – Jackman

Bergenheim – Weight – Park

Streit – Hillen

Sutton – MacDonald

Gervais – Meyer

Roloson

Biron

Since the Islanders are carrying 14 forwards – Josh Bailey and Tim Jackman came off the Injured list today - Matt Martin will stay in Bridgeport until roster spots are cleared. If Andy Sutton is traded, Dustin Kohn will re-join the Islanders. Jack Hillen is also off the Injured list.

Something to look out for. If Snow is close to a trade for Sutton this afternoon, he could opt to pull the defenseman out of the lineup. Assuming DiPietro is put on IR, Snow could get Kohn to the Coliseum on time.

Scott Gordon on Ron Wilson’s vision for Team USA: “80-90% of what we did at the Olympics as a team is what we’re trying to do here. Obviously, we had more expereienced playersin the Olympics, but ultimately that’s what we want our team to be.”

On his team’s playoff chances, the coach said losing the third period lead to Ottawa the day before the Olympic break was a tough blow. He also said the Islanders’ “not easy schedule” presents a stiff challenge, but he’s excited to see how the team performs.

Twenty regular season games to go, starting tonight.

Welcome back to Blackhawks announcers John Wiedeman and Steve Konroyd. John is simply one of the best pure hockey play-by-play broadcasters on the planet. Steve was incredibly kind to this young Islander News writer during my first season with the club. His class and generosity will never be forgotten.

I bet they come out flying.
    2-1 isles

  2. avatar Steve says:

This is a good thing for the organization. We are in a position of strength. There aren’t a lot of better options for the top teams. There aren’t a lot of veteran proven goalies available with a better resume and smaller salary than Roli. There isn’t a dman that has Sutton’s size and skillset. Should be a good 24 hours. I only wonder why the team would play Sutton and Roli tonight and risk injury.

  3. avatar What do you want me to do JAY? says:

Deal them both….Sutton and Rolo….keep Biron and bring up Lawson…..its the smart thing to do..this way we can get a top 5 pick for sure

  4. avatar Tony says:

Don’t blow this Garth–we are SO in the driver’s seat right now. Make the other team overpay for once.

  5. avatar Jim Clark says:

So DP’s injury may actually strengthen Snow’s hand in making a deal?

Hopefully the Blackhawks will bring their national anthem singer Jim Cornelison along since he sings way better than the school kids the Islanders use.

  6. avatar Alfred says:

Can’t believe the Isles sales staff is now asking for three years up front on season ticket purchases.

If the talent level thy have this year is an indicator of future years, that should be a crime.

  7. avatar Dynasty23x4 says:

the olympics were great, loved the hockey tournament and all the drama. i mean could you have scripted a better ending with crosby scorin in ot for the gold..crazy. that bein said i am definetely ready for tonites game. the home stretch, 20 to go, cant wait to see what happens with the deadline too. Go ISLES!

  8. avatar Akeem says:

Amen on Wiedeman. He was incredible when he was doing Islander games. Hawks fans are lucky to have him.

  9. avatar IslesRock says:

Lets make some deals! I wonder if Hunter or Bergy could be part of some potential bigger deals with Sutton or Rolo.

  10. avatar Atari8bit says:

Honestly I do have some trepidation dealing Rolly, locked up for another year to a divsional rival. If that is the case I certainly hope we get a blue chip prospect back in the deal. If it were Biron- pending UFA then not so much. Actually I like that better because (a)I feel for Marty and (b)like the idea of having Rolly back in the fold next year.

  11. avatar Steve says:

If I were Garth, it would thake an arm and a leg for Philly to acquire Roli. Especially if the Blackhawks offer anything of value…

CB, I think your board is going to explode in the next 26 1/2 hours.

  12. avatar Melvin says:

Crazy conspiracy theory of the day: Anybody think that DiPietro’s “injury” was made public to help Garth’s trade position? Maybe after the deadline, DiPietro’s knee suddenly comes back much better.

  13. avatar Chris in DC says:

Garth should see if there’s a chance the Flyers would part with Braydon Coburn. The Philly Inquirer reports that the Flyers have been down on Coburn this year, which is why they’re trying to get Hamhuis from Nashville.

  14. avatar Avolp55turgeonfichaud says:

I am hoping we don’t have a repeat Billy Guerin showdown if Sutton is removed from the lineup tonight. I agree with CB, both Roloson and Sutton should be moved for fair market value (or better). If we can’t get fair value, we keep Rolli and can attempt to resign Sutton if Snow chooses to do so.

The nice part about this situation is there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of bubble teams who could really use a Dwayne Roloson or Andy Sutton. Unless Garth Snow is starting his day with a glass of whiskey, we should come out on top by the end of tomorrow.

  15. avatar Steve says:

I wouldn’t put it past Garth, but I don’t think so.

DP’s status has been a dark cloud hanging over this franchise. I don’t think our managment team would do anything to bring attention to the injury woes of our once franchise player.

  16. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

If the Isles trade Roly to the Flyers, they need to get at least a 1st-round pick or a legitmate prospect. I don’t think a 2nd-rounder is enough to trade him to a division rival. If Snow can get a 1st-rounder for Campoli and Comrie, he should be able to swing it for a goalie that could conceivably lead that team to the Cup.

  17. avatar 4theisles says:

How to we replace Sutton’s size, grit, experience, and leadership? The answer we don’t. 35 is not old for a D. How does a 2nd pik,{if we are lucky} who would probably at best be 2 or 3 years away from the NHL help develop our young nucleus? The answer it doesn’t. Snow is paid to make these decisions but the fan base may not want a quick fix, But on the other hand a winning team in my opinion would be an important element in keeping our team here. Is there anything more important than that?

  18. avatar Dan says:

i’d be willing to take back salary in order to get a better deal. rolo for gagne and maroon. maroon needs to be an islander asap.

  19. avatar Zeike says:

    For Melvin – No.

Chicago is one of the top teams in the entire NHL and while the Isles will be jazzed up there only chance may lie in fatigue from the Chitown Olympians and the hope that Chicago may rest one or two of those guys.

Still excited about both tonight’s game and of course the deadline. Here’s to hoping it’s not a let down like last year.

  20. avatar Stephen says:

Better question is: Are we being led to believe the current value is a 2nd rounder, so when we get a bit more we are plesantly surprised? You know.. the opposite of what happened last year w/ Billy.

  21. avatar Cairns311 says:

Sutton dosent figure in our future plans so he should be dealt. He’s injury prone and his stock is as high as it ever will be. Goodbye Suts.

  22. avatar pete debenedetto says:

in reference to #10….stole my thunder. Can Garth be so coy as to make DP’s knee an issue that we would keep our goalies….forcing other teams to outbid each other to the point of us stealing prospects an players???
    Oh the drama!!!!

  23. avatar Isles Fanatic says:

    4theisle,

I partly agree that a winning team will go a log way, but a 35 yrs old big body “is” old, he has 2 yrs left, and to have a winning team, Snow needs to build from within, as the organization is not there yet. Best chance to have a winner long term is to trade Sutton if Snow gets proper value, if not then look to resign himto a 2 year deal. If Sutton refuses, the Snow has cleared up more cap space for July 1st.

  24. avatar Smitty says:

What is with all these conspiracy theories regarding injuries and trade values?

Islanders still suck (but less than last year) and they need another good draft. Sutton and Rollie are our best pieces. If we get 2 2nd rounders for both of them Snow has to do it. I have faith in Snow and what he has done in drafts and in FA. He knew Rick was likely done, hence the goaltender drafting of last year.

  25. avatar Lorne says:

Are the Islanders really asking for 3 seasons up front for Season subscribers?

  26. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Sell now….buy this summer. Its definitely feasible that we can resign Sutton in July. If Snow can make ‘good’ deals and I stress that word, then I don’t see any reason why not. But this team needs to add quality free agents this summer to help support our young guys. If not this team will become stagnant.

  27. avatar 50 in 50 says:

I sat and watched Gordons system work beautifully during the Olympics. The only problem is this team is not a Star studded Olympic Team. Trade Rollie For a proven NHLer. A straight up trade for a forward like Asham and a 2nd rounder. Sutts should be packaged with Tambs for a 2nd rounder and a gritty forward, similar to KO. Garth “If you build it, we will come”

  28. avatar jim says:

no Martin tonight. boo!!! i’ll be there tonight and now i know there is no hope for any physical play from us. then again, that’s been the case for most of the 20 games i’ve gone to this season.

  29. avatar the bomber says:

roloson throws up a shutout tonight and he can just fly home with his new team, the blackhawks….

  30. avatar hockeytime says:

Is DP being hurt a smokescreen to get more value from trading a goalie? Hmmm..something to thing about.

  31. avatar terry says:

The isles need nhl players not picks. Picks are to far away from being a part of the nhl team to just stock pile picks at some point you need nhl ready players. If they cant get players for rolie or sutton just keep them and try to resign sutton to a 2yr deal, keep rolie and try to figure out away to get DP out of town. Ihope snow makes wise moves this year

  32. avatar Mike says:

Simple…..Trade Roloson for a pick, trade Sutton for a pick, and trade Biron for a pick. Then, trade all three picks (and the Guerin pick) on draft day to move up as far as you can.

  33. avatar Brian G says:

CB – Is Chicago’s GM at the Coliseum today?

  34. avatar the bomber says:

i respectfully disagree terry. we dont need nhl players other teams dont want. we already have plenty of nhl players we dont want. do you really want someone else’s tambellini, sim, freddy meyer? thats all your gonna get back is the crap other teams have given up on…..

get picks, stay patient….. our time is coming. takes a lot to overcome that fraud on nbc olympics talking like he knows hockey….

  35. avatar valentino says:

isles need more than just picks…they need top 3 picks…they need unmistakeable talent…cant miss prospects…future stars…

  36. avatar Islebethere4u says:

Should the Isles make a trade, They should try to make a bigger package for value than just a one for one. I Feel they have several throw ins that should up the ante in a trade. The Isle have way too many fringe or character players hanging on here. Its great to have one or two on a team, but this many makes you average to below average real quick.

  37. avatar mrlbem says:

I wonder if before all is said and done, San Jose will make a pitch for Roli. That team has choked year after year in the playoffs and you wonder if this is their last chance before they dismantle the team.

  38. avatar Isles81 says:

Anyone else besides me real wary of dealing with Phlly? I don’t like the idea of potentially putting them over the top and then seeing Rollie in net 8 times next year. Better be bringing home a steal if you deal him to a division rival Garth.

  39. avatar MorDraftPicks says:

Mike # 31 – Im with ya – More picks!!
CB – Konroyd was traded here for your fav, Johnny T – didnt that make it awkward at first?

  40. avatar James says:

Am I missing something? If DP is hurt, than why are we trading Rollie? Are we going to trust Biron as the starter until DP gets back?

  41. avatar derek says:

Wideman was Awesome. Nice guy and a great voice for hockey.

Trading Roli to Philly for anything less than their #1 is just wrong. The Flyers own us, as CB has mentioned. Why would we trade away our best goalie to a team that we’re facing 2 more times this season and another 6 next season. Unless we get one of either Philly’s: #1, JVR, or Scott Hartnell +, GMGS should just hang up the phone.

  42. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Trade Roloson, 2nd round pick this year, 1st round next year for JVR…

Flyers need picks, they have NONE!!!!!! works out both ways…

  43. avatar ME says:

I do not think we are in a position of strength here like some of you believe. If Snow plays hardball with any potential suitors for Roloson and Biron, those suitors can always turn their noses up at Snow and then pursue other goalies on the market like Turco, Vokoun, Price, Ward.

  44. avatar Dan says:

Does anyone saying trade everyone for picks and tank the rest of the season plan on attending another game this season???

  45. avatar Eric Nystrom says:

John Wiedeman is the MAN! He is a GREAT play-by-play guy and he SHOULD have been here instead of Howie – Rag$ – Loving Rose..

    Islesphan25.. keep dreaming

  46. avatar Smokey a.k.a. Botta is God says:

The Flyers can have Rolo… if they pay a Division Rival Premium. I’m not handing you a proven playoff goaltender so you can run off and win the Cup. Then again, Snowy dealt Guerin to Pitt for par value, so who knows.

Also, maybe this is a dumb minor complaint, but remind me again why Dustin Kohn isn’t playing, yet Bruno Gervais is out there? The $150,000 additional dollars they’d have to pay to keep Kohn over the last 20 games really makes THAT much of a difference when you consider how much better he’s been?

  47. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Turco is not moving, Vokoun will cost an arm and a leg….Price will cost the same….They are in a total place of strength

  48. avatar Brian in VA says:

You gotta love Gordon.. He basically said “Yep we are done. Lets make trades.” We are a JOKE! But Snow is a genius and Scotty G is the next Al Arbour. Yay! Lets just end the season and focus on baseball already!

  49. avatar Staten Islander says:

To all the people that think we can get JVR from Philly for our 40yo goalie and 35yo d-man, why dont we just go for the gusto and demand that the Caps give us Ovie for them, not happening

  50. avatar Chris in DC says:

I think Roloson for Coburn is a reasonable way to at least start the discussion. I’d love to see Coburn on the Isles blueline, and as I said earlier on this post, he’s apparently in the Flyer doghouse this year.

  51. avatar jnew66 says:

if it wasn’t for Roloson we would be dead f-… last …. AGAIN. Understand it’s a business move w/ 6 weeks to go in a season that’s better than last, but more than likely going no where. If he’s traded to a contender for a second round pick, you’re looking at a draft position of somewhere between 50 to 60. In the immortal words of Derrick Coleman, “Woopty Dam Doo”. There has to be better return on a guy who is the main reason for an improved team. I love DP but he is never going to be the player he was. I repeat NEVER, so everyone can stop dreaming about him playing 60-65 games a season. Biron is a backup w/ no value. If the two kids we drafted last year will be ready for next year, then fine, trade him and get fair value. If not, our former goalie turned GM will be out spending money on another 35+ yr old goal tender again next year.

  52. avatar Matt in CT says:

To anyone worried about trading roloson to a division rival in the flyers, i ask you one question…. Why? Honestly… Why? Who cares if roly takes them to the cup. The only thing that matters is that we’re not going anywhere – and if the best return for the franchise comes from philadelphia, then philadelphia is where he should be sent. Its not like we’re sending a 21 year old goalie there way @2.5/year. That will haunt us for years to come. After next season, its going to be hard for roloson to find a starting job. Heck, he outwardly stated the reason he signed with us in the first place is because of the extra year we gave him. Get over it, send him wherever we get the most value. Do you really think next years islander team will be making a push for the cup? Get real. Continue to build this thing the right way. Getting an nhl defenceman outside of streit and sutton might be a nice start.

  53. avatar Michael Pastore says:

Long Time Islander fan since 1974. Until I moved to Florida went to see 12-20 games a year. I have the NHL package and maybe miss 3 games a year. The only way this team is going for the long haul is by trading Rolonson & Sutton. We need another top 5 pick hopefully a top 3 pick. This off season get 2 Established Free Agent Defensemen & 1 Sniper Free Agent Winger. Last shut down DP the rest of the season. Pray next year he is OK. Play only the kids and Biron the rest of the way. I include Tambs in on this. Sit Weight, Sims give Tambs 20 games if he does not produce then let him go finally.

  54. avatar ed says:

Who was Sutton traded for?? I can’t find it anywhere

  55. avatar Vealchop says:

    Sutton to Ottawa… via yahoo

  56. avatar Iron Islander77 says:

Trade ANYONE on this team to improve the future Except:

    John Tavares
    Kyle Okposo
    Matt Moulson
    Josh Bailey
    Matt Martin
    Mark Streit
    Jack Hillen
    Andy MacDonald

  57. avatar ed says:

Thanks. Now time to see what we got back. Hopefully it is not Campoli lol

  58. avatar JerseyBoy says:

    No details yet.

  59. avatar phillybob2 says:

sutton to ottawa being reported everywhere – details?????

  60. avatar ed says:

Read only a draft pick on TSN

  61. avatar JohnnyC. says:

    For a draft pick

  62. avatar Dan says:

bruce garrioch is saying for a 2nd round pick. i thought garth was holding out for more?

  63. avatar nystrom23 says:

tsn is saying also for a draft pick

  64. avatar Hd says:

The isles should make a serious offer to hamhuis. If sutton is traded he is not coming back during the offseason. Maybe gervais can go and we can pick up a proven d man

  65. avatar ed says:

2nd rounder that used to be San Jose. Big haul lol

  66. avatar blocknessmonster says:

Garrioch isn’t always correct or reliable.

  67. avatar TradeUp says:

A second round pick from the Sharks.

  68. avatar Stephen says:

For San Jose’s 2nd round pick??????????????????????

    There HAS to be more.

  69. avatar Jim Clark says:

#40 I still have seven Flex 20 tickets left so yea, I’ll be using them for the rest of the season if the Islanders make a massive trade of talent like Roloson, Sutton, Hunter, etc…any players except Taveras, Bailey and Okposo. My main concerns is that 70% of the time second round picks are complete flops and I have doubts about how smart Snow and the front office really is. And I will buy some sort of ticket package for next year if they do..depending on outside economic factors.

  70. avatar ed says:

Man that just shows you our talent. That was number 1 or 2 of our tradeable assets and we could only get a mid level 2nd round pick

  71. avatar AJAX says:

    Raped again.

  72. avatar Hock says:

TSN only says a draft pick

  73. avatar Andre says:

If that is the case, absolutely poor job done by Snow. I wonder if he is going to give Roloson away too.

  74. avatar GZ says:

Sutton just got sent to the Sens.

  75. avatar Swan says:

As per TSN, Sutton for a pick.

  76. avatar Trade 'em all says:

    Sutton to Ottawa

  77. avatar bobice says:

i know its almost impossible, but maby a package to philly 4 van riemsdyk….a man can dream

  78. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Sutton to Ottawa for a pick.

  79. avatar TradeUp says:

Did San Jose have an extra second rounder from somebody else? If not, it is practically a third round pick.

  80. avatar phillybob2 says:

settling for a second here not unreasonable. . .hopefully he can now use that or OUR second rounder to sweeten a rolly or biron deal

  81. avatar ken says:

this is worse then the fedotanko deadline debacle. Yet season ticket holder prices rise….

  82. avatar 2277 says:

from TSN – The Ottawa Senators have acquired defenceman Andy Sutton from the New York Islanders. In 54 games this season, Sutton has recorded four goals and eight assists with 73 penalty minutes.
In 567 career games, the 34-year old has 34 goals and 101 assists. More to follow…

  83. avatar 303Joe says:

Way to hold out for more Garth. Funny stuff you get a 2nd rounder which is San Joses which will be around 55 or something. Great we can get another small college kid that will never make it to the NHL see Cory Trevino and Towes. And believe me they’ll never be in the NHL.

  84. avatar mrlbem says:

If only San Jose’s second pick, I’m disgusted!!

  85. avatar cahoward28 says:

Understand that the reason that we are in a position of strength is because of the contracts that go along with the goalies that you mentioned. Turco is due over $5 million next year and I believe that Vokoun is in that neighborhood too. Rolie is a very affordable $2.5 million for your starting goalie. That’s a big part of this, Chicago cannot afford Turco or Vokoun no matter what, unless the other team takes back Huet, and really, why would they?

  86. avatar ed says:

Not to be a downer, but to throw the towel in on the season for a late 2nd rounder is disgusting imo. I am sure the season ticket holders will be excited. Geez

  87. avatar Topher Mittens says:

So Mr Sutton is now a Senator…. Source is from a Senator employee… Good luck Andy…

  88. avatar goteamgo says:

NYI have traded defenceman Andy Sutton to Ottawa for a second round pick that previously belonged to the San Jose Sharks

  89. avatar JerseyBoy says:

Second round pick from the Sharks confirmed. We’re so done.

  90. avatar Jim Clark says:

So a San Jose second round pick is 45th to 60th overall, depending on their playoff performance? Knowing our luck, this will be the year the Cup knows its way to San Jose.

  91. avatar derek says:

    Sutts for a 2nd rounder, per TSN.ca

That’s weak and a crap move.

  92. avatar tonysac says:

Sutton to the senators for a 2ND ROUND DRAFT PICK…HWAT A JOKE!!!

  93. avatar Brian G says:

terrible move by Snow, why not just sign Sutton for 2 years 2.8 per…enough with the picks, this team needs players

  94. avatar Bill says:

well, that didn’t work out so great……..

  95. avatar Jersey Steve says:

2nd round pick…obviously the going rate. I’m not impressed.

  96. avatar 2277 says:

did anyone really truly think a team was going to give up a 1st rounder for a until this year mostly injured, old Dman?!

  97. avatar MorDraftPicks says:

For a 2nd? Cool!!! Now Garth can get another 2nd for Rolo, package all 3 2nds to get 5 3rds, then trade 4 of the 3rds for a conditional 1st and 2nd

  98. avatar Mike L says:

Was Washington and Chicago the only other teams maybe offering a 2nd round pick? Or is Snow expecting SJ to choke early in the playoffs? Even if another team was offering a second rounder it wasn’t better than SJ’s? Oh well

  99. avatar Staten Islander says:

I’m ok with it, all depends on what they do with the pick. Sutton is 35 and in his walk year. Good luck to him, hope the Sens go deep into the playoffs, enjoy the ride Andy

  100. avatar Mike says:

Maybe we don’t have all the details yet. This doesn’t make much sense.

  101. avatar battfist says:

Please dnt tell me that trade is true…

Thanks for the update on Rolo!

  102. avatar Topher Mittens says:

Also TSN has reported the Sutton deal.
Sutton for a 2nd rnd pick.

  103. avatar Jon says:

Sad. If you were going to get a second from multiple teams, why send him to Ottawa? Does not make sense!

  104. avatar Swan says:

As my Ranger friend just texted me,

“Ahhh, DiPietro on the IR and the selloff begins. Must be March on Long Island”.

    So true.

  105. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Formerly SJ’s pick!? Now I’m REALLY not impressed. Ugh. I think I’m over the limit so this is my last post. Once again, ugh. Oh, and Snow is really beginning to disappoint me.

  106. avatar cahoward28 says:

THis is a joke of a trade. Why even make this deal? I’d rather have Sutton than the #60 pick. I was all for trading him, but come on, you can’t do better than this? So Grebeshkov has more value than Sutton? Dominic Moore has more value than Sutton? Come on. Terrible job by Garth here.

  107. avatar pj1212 says:

I am not sure what to make of this possible sutton deal. First off a second rounder is not bad, its more then we got for guerin. second of all i like sutton, but since when is he the best d man in the league, a 2nd rounder is really not horrible. dont get me wrong sutton has had an awesome year, but not a season worht a first round pick. I understand snow was holding out for more, but what where his other offers, before everyone jumps off the brooklyn bridge, lets what to see what we really got, and what other offers where.. expectations way to high on suttons value..I however do agree, i am sick of picks, we dont need anymore picks… maybe he is packaging something, who knows..

  108. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

Sutton trade to ottawa for 2nd round pick.

  109. avatar Just Sayin says:

Grebeshkov absolutely has more value than Sutton. He’s in his mid-20s and played on the Russian Olympic team.

  110. avatar tom says:

what you dont understand is that this summer you are probably losing sutton anyway, and this season you have to climb over 6 teams to make the playoffs, so a 2nd round pick is better than keeping him.

  111. avatar Merrick says:

    Yawn.

I still have 11 now totally meaningless games left on my season plan and can only hope that we get a top 3 selection in the draft.

Moreover, the Isles have indeed raised season ticket prices unless you pay in full in 28 days.

I’m wondering how much longer I can afford to remain such a sucker.

  112. avatar pj1212 says:

i would rather they andy.. then settle… but again like i said above they were not getting anything morfe for him

  113. avatar Alan says:

The contract talks between Pat Morris and Garth must not have gone well because I don’t see Garth making the move if he could have signed Sutton at an affordable rate. It’s not Garth’s fault if Sutton won’t sign for $3-3.5r million. He’s definitely not worth more than that. And, if a second round pick was the going rate for a defenseman, then so be it. The Islanders got a conditional 5th round pick for their captain last year!

  114. avatar Mike says:

Didn’t San Jose trade it’s 2nd rounder for Wallin?!?!?!?!?!? To the Canes?????????????????????????

  115. avatar Eric says:

wow! I expected a first rounder. Atleast this the sens probably wont be in the finals this year so the Islanders will not be helping another team win the cup like they did with guerin, however I wouldnt mind if they got a first round pick! I expect more trades.

  116. I guess Garth couldn’t hold out any longer? The market has not been kind to defensemen. Leopold went for a 2nd, and even Grebeshkov went for a 2nd round pick. Hopefully more luck with Roli. Maybe Garth takes someone off waivers? Cote is supposedly out there and maybe Voros(?). Lukowich? Bueller?

  117. avatar Vas says:

Actually, I did think the islanders could get a first or a LEGIT NHL prospect for Sutton espescially when pikers like Dominic Moore were fetchin 2nd rounders. Snow F’d up! Should have gotten more creative just like he did last year with the Campoli deal.

  118. avatar Lance79 says:

You people need to get a grip. Who here thought that on Oct 1 2009 that Andy Sutton would fetch a 2nd round pick after Guerin got us a conditional 2nd rounder and was hailed as a vital move by the Pens? No he didn’t get higher than the going rate but he didn’t get fleeced either

  119. avatar Michael Pastore says:

What we should do is now package Rolonson, with the pick we just aquired, and our next years 2nd Round pick for this years and next years 1st round picks to the Flyers.

  120. avatar Iron Islander77 says:

    call up Brendon Witt!!!

  121. avatar Alan says:

The Guerin deal was for a conditional 3rd rounder — sorry for the mistake in my previous post

  122. avatar Brian G says:

This Team needs some NHL Caliber players not fringe players…then try and get by – NO MORE DRAFT PICKS – its not like Bridgeport is stacked with great up and coming prospects

This is one of the worst Defenses in the NHL:

    Streit – Hillen

    Kohn – MacDonald

    Gervais – Meyer

  123. avatar pj1212 says:

well said lance 79, i completely agree with you.. who knows, we got a 2nd for him, with a small chance of resingning him after the season(highly doubtful).. but still no way were they getting a first round pick for him…

  124. avatar Bill says:

    Who’s Brendon Witt?

  125. avatar BJ says:

This has to be a good will gesture to Ottawa for duping them into the Campoli for a 1st rounder last yr…thats the only way this makes sense, Garth trying to make good to Murray bc Sutton was worth more then this…

  126. avatar Ethan K says:

I bet Snow gets no more than a second rounder for Roloson, maybe a third.

  127. avatar Sheppy says:

It is what it is. We were not going anywhere WITH Sutton. It is better to have gotten something for him than lose him after the season as others have stated. He had a good year, but he really is not part of this rebuild.

  128. avatar O.Bender says:

Interesting to read the comments both here and on TSN. Most of the Isles fans overvalue Sutton, hence the reaction.

Fans on TSN are completely in shock that Murray gave up 2nd pick for him.

I guess the value is about right.

  129. avatar steve says:

not that any fan would over rate the value of a player on their own team. grebeshkov was last seen playing on the russian olympic team, and hes 24. its commonly called “potential upside”.
garth traded a 35 year old (free agent to be) defender for a chance to draft one of the top 50 players in the nhl draft. deals like campoli for a first rounder don’t happen every season. if sutton likes it here on long island, maybe we see him again next season if he resigns. if not, he played great this year, was nonexistent for 2 seasons with injuries, and lets see what happens over the next 26 hours.
garth snow didn’t just trade POTVIN OR ORR OR LIDSTROM for a second rounder. he moved a RENTAL! a physical defender with 20 games left on his deal for a second round pick. whats interesting: if the price was so cheap, why didnt the Caps, Pens, Devils bite for a just second rounder? to sell, you have to find a buyer.

  130. avatar doc says:

    Well said Steve…

  131. avatar isles72 says:

While Sutton had a good season for us , I’d say most of his tenure here was a failure .

he was either injured or playing like a 6’6 pylon while shaking off the rust .Once the rust was gone , he was up to par with what the isles had signed him for

    take the pick and run

  132. avatar admin says:

Sean Bergenheim out of the lineup tonight. Skated in today’s workout and yesterday’s practice…CB

  133. avatar Upgrade says:

Sean Bergenheim out. Could be headed somewhere but I hope if he is, that we are getting something that would keep us competing this year. He’s a decent asset

  134. avatar Irish Isle says:

Why is Jackman in the lineup over Martin & JJ?

  135. avatar Jim M says:

An offer to absorb a big salary? Just say it is Huet, are the hawks confident enough to put all their marbles in one basket for Neimi to lead them to the cup?

  136. avatar admin says:

Sean Bergenheim confirmed as a healthy scratch. 0 pts in his last 14 games…CB

  137. avatar Isles 420 says:

holy bejezzus where did blake come from?

  138. avatar Isles9121 says:

Where did comeau come from all of a sudden

  139. avatar Blizzard says:

very happy to see Comeau show signs of being a nice peace to this…..ahem…..rebuild.

  140. avatar therain93 -- terriers fan says:

Poor boo-birds, comeau, sim and park all putting up the points tonight. Good thing garth made that sutton trade or they’d have nothing to complain about….
    Go ISLES! ( ‘ :

  141. avatar Nick says:

Deal Rolie and like the guy up there said call up Lawson if DP cant play. Trade some others if possible

  142. avatar Nyles says:

Where did Comeau come from all of the Sutton?

  143. avatar Steve says:

    NO to trading Roloson, period.
