PHILADELPHIA 3 ISLANDERS 2
Two Flyers’ PP goals in third for comeback win

by admin on March 9th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Trevor Gillies’ gets a rare shift late in the third with the game tied 2-2 and gets called for a boarding penalty. The Flyers score on the power play to win.

All the slumps – eight road losses in a row (all in regulation), Snow/Gordon on the road in the division (except MSG) and vs. the Flyers (NHL-worst 15 losses in a row) – continue. When the Islanders were up 2-1 in the third, I was getting ready to kid Howie Rose about not being there.

Dwayne Roloson does everything to help his team win, again.

John Tavares and Kyle Okposo score in the same game for the first time since. Nov. 13.

During the second intermission, Jeff Carter tells VERSUS that the Flyers have to go harder to the net because the Islanders’ defense is so small.

Scott Gordon tells Katie Strang before the game, “There’s no question that there’s a mismatch from a size standpoint.” The coach also says Gillies will be with the big club through at least the weekend.

Islanders fall to 0-3 since the trade deadline, a season-low six-games under .500 and ten points behind the eighth spot in the East.

The Maple Leafs won in overtime. The Panthers won in a shootout in Minnesota. (Florida management has to be pulling its hair out). The Blue Jackets were victorious in Anaheim.

Rob Schremp suffered a right knee injury and will be evaluated by team doctors on Wednesday.

The Islanders have no practice on Wednesday, host St. Louis on Thursday, the Devils on Saturday and Maple Leafs (winners tonight) on Sunday.

See you Wednesday.

  9. avatar Brooklyn Stroonze says:

Will the Islanders make a big deal about the draft this year? It seems like the M.O. for the past decade or so………

  10. avatar Dmoney says:

Time we beat them is tonight!!! Screw the flyers.

  11. avatar Matt S. says:

no matter how much you want a good draft pick this year you have to want them to win this game. if for no other reason than Philly is the most centralized gathering of jerks in North America.

  12. avatar admin says:

    Roloson vs. Leighton

  13. avatar eric nystrom says:

Let’s go Oilers, Leafs, Blue Jackets, Panthers and THrashers.. Oh and Flyers! ;)

  14. avatar Staten Islander says:

Can we PLEASE beat the bullies before I die? Just once, I don’t ask for much, do I?

  15. avatar Kevin says:

For those of us who have D-TV; you should be able to watch it here http://atdhe.net/ This happened the last time we played Philly

  16. avatar admin says:

Brian: yes, the live game chats got way out of control with so many visitors. Instead, like I did last week, my hope is to do a live chat during the afternoon at least once every other week. Next one I’m planning for is this Friday.

  17. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Can we make the chats at 4.

  18. avatar isles316 says:

I just hope no one gets killed tonight.

  19. avatar 50 in 50 says:

Let the Nationally televised embarassment begin. Go Islanders !!!

  20. avatar its time says:

is the game on directv ???

  21. avatar steve says:

I’d love to see Tavares, Okposo and Bailey have good games and score a goal each.

I’d also like to see us lose 4-3 and have Gervais be a -4.

  22. avatar Joe says:

    They are getting owned.

  23. avatar Staten Islander says:

    So far I’m not impressed

  24. avatar 7thWoman says:

Bets on how many shifts Trevor gillies gets? 2.

  25. avatar admin says:

Welcome to the legendary Denise Karl. Such an honor.

Welcome to all. 0-0, 16:37 left in the first. The Islanders are rope-a-doping them.

  26. avatar 7thWoman says:

thank you mr. botta. I found the merlot.

  27. avatar steven says:

for anyone with directv you can watch the game here: http://www.justin.tv/mcanimx#r=H6TyYgI~

  28. avatar Easyisle says:

Chris – was Laviolette as whiny as his expression makes him appear?

  29. avatar admin says:

If you’re sitting down … Tamby is scratched tonight.

  30. avatar miket239 says:

Oh how sweet an Isles win would be tonight. Just for the helluvit. Lets go Islanders!

  31. avatar admin says:

Easyisle: No, he was just the second best coach the Islanders have ever had and continues to prove it every day.

  32. avatar Julie says:

    PLEASE no Laviolette bashing.

  33. avatar Candor says:

scratching Tamby makes us tougher by omission.

  34. avatar Joe says:

Gillies was trying to get Asham to fight off a faceoff, no go, damn!

  35. avatar Fred says:

    Tavares scored a goal!!

  36. avatar Rich M says:

    John Tavares ez goal

  37. avatar admin says:

    Goal, John Tavares.

  38. avatar TuxTax says:

    JT Thank God!!!

  39. avatar Staten Islander says:

    JT! FINALLY!

  40. avatar 7thWoman says:

OMG! was that a — JT GOAL????

  41. avatar Alex Kinkead says:

    Thank God Tavares finally scored!

  42. avatar glenn says:

    chris…
how could the flyers not go out and get a goaltender? it’s been the same thing with them every year…probably since ron hextall.

  43. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

I’d like to see that Pronger replay.

  44. avatar Doug says:

    Great goal for Tavares…:)

  45. avatar Fred says:

Haven’t seen that much Islanders pressure since 1993. j/k. :)

  46. avatar admin says:

10:25 left in first. Getting chippy.

  47. avatar 7thWoman says:

Um, not for nothing, but WMJC is silent on the webstream.

  48. avatar Staten Islander says:

The boys are feisty tonight, I think it may be the effects of JT scoring

  49. avatar Ray's Team says:

no lets see doug weights stats not that replay of that dirty hit

  50. avatar its time says:

    thank you steven.

    so far so good

  51. avatar dedshark says:

im pretty sure doug weights stats on tv just said over 1000 pts in 256 games HHAHAHAH… he must be VERY good

  52. avatar MJS says:

The forecheck is really solid right now. This is what I want to see every game.

  53. avatar admin says:

I can tell you that when I was at those two games in Chicago on the weekend, I had so many league people tell me they couldn’t believe the F’ers and Hawks didn’t reach out for Roloson. Agreed.

  54. avatar 50 in 50 says:

Im very impressed with Gillies. 3 shifts and I believe 5 hits. Time to send a lil message back to Pronger for the elbow to Simmers face.

  55. avatar glenn says:

    chris…
u going to make an appearance monday at social?

  56. avatar Julie says:

7th Woman: Thanks for mentioning it–I thought it was my computer. I’m overdosed on Doc Emrick.

  57. avatar Rich M says:

roloson is unreal..the guy is amazing

  58. avatar Ray's Team says:

im sorry jackman should not be playing with that visor-should be a scratch-he is useless right now

  59. avatar Joe says:

54- Good point, he has looked real good.

  60. avatar Joe says:

He took a whack at Pronger trying to fight him.

  61. avatar Big Dog says:

game is seems very physical… hope they keep pushing

  62. avatar admin says:

    1-0, 5:55 left in first.

  63. avatar Glen S says:

Way to go JT, let’s hope this get’s him going. As far as Pronger no SUPRISE there dirty SOB, he get’s 1 penalty for about every 4 penalties great job by the NHL.
    LETS GO ISLANDERS…..

  64. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

Not watching the game. Was the Tavares goal good or lucky? Thank god that kid got on the board. He desperately needed it.

  65. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Very good 1st period right now…all 4 lines are flowing well….I feel bad for schremp….his 1 line was Jackman and Gillies….he was looking for anybody to help him lol…

  66. avatar admin says:

Trevor Gillies has matched his icetime from last game, which also came in the first.

Scott Gordon told Katie Strang today that Trevor will be here for at least through Sunday.

  67. avatar Bobby says:

I would like to see the Isles play .500 hockey.

Still want a top 5 pick.

  68. avatar 7thWoman says:

Mr. botta, can you call Kinger and find out if the station blew up or he was told to stop broadcasting?

  69. avatar Ray's Team says:

our D cant even clear the front of the net-they are so small

  70. avatar Joe says:

Thanks CB, that makes me a happy guy.

  71. avatar John X says:

Flyers definitely turning it on. Isles need all 5 on the ice to step it up.

  72. avatar dedshark says:

this game reminds me of the mighty ducks 2. USA vs ICELAND…

  73. avatar Bobby says:

Hopefully Sutton comes back next year.

Not much of a free agent market coming up.

  74. avatar admin says:

Flyers with a power play with exactly 2 mins left.

  75. avatar Ray's Team says:

    its not if….its when

  76. avatar glenn says:

    chris…
gut feeling. Richard Park and Tim Jackman on this team next year?

  77. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    Park Yes….

    Jackman..no

  78. avatar Julie says:

Roloson is just plain fun to watch.

  79. avatar Blizzard says:

….man Roloson is making them think why the hell didn’t we get this guy…..and I am glad he is still an Islander.

  80. avatar JerseyIslander says:

Was it a good PK? I can’t watch, I’m at work, and the simulcast’s are down (even phillys)…

  81. avatar Dmoney says:

Yea solid PK by the Isles and Roli has been very good so far.

  82. avatar Michael P. says:

honestly that was a good period, shows you that this team can be effective. I also think Gillies even though he is a lughead is something this team needs. He was yelling up and down the bench all period, it seems like a meaningless thing but for a young team who even Gordon has said is a quiet group i think it is positive.

  83. avatar ShardZ says:

re the radio feed: as far as I can tell, its here, but streaming really quietly. If I put my computer at 100% volume, and headphones directly in my ears, I can just barely hear the broadcast. Also its got music playing over it (also quiet). It sounds to me like someone is playing the station over a traditional radio, at the very edge of the game’s range (where 2 stations come in at once), and then holding a mic across the room, and broadcasting that…

  84. avatar steve says:

Anyone else get the feeling that the Flyers are the ones playing rope a dope? The Islanders can’t possibly keep this intensity for 60 minutes. Okposo, Streit and even Tavares had a good period. Okposo is an animal, but he and Streit will tire at this pace. This is where we fall short as a team. Remember when we were winning games, we had 4 lines rolling. That has to happen for Go Go’s style to be effective.

Oh well, at least the kids are still playing hard.

  85. avatar TuxTax says:

Gotta love Moulson’s interview’s…reminds me of the Dude…”This aggression will not stand, Man!”

  86. avatar 7thWoman says:

I hope Chris King really IS mixing drinks. He will probably need them.

  87. avatar Bobby says:

Do you think the draft party will be as big as last year?

Just watching the Boston.. Toronto game. I feel sorry for T.O.

    Giving up Hall or Seguin.

  88. avatar Strummer's Army says:

CB, good nickname for the Flyers…the F’ers, fits.

CB, can you find out how much muscle Bailey was able to add over the summer?
Also, since the Isles website won’t give us proper ht/wts can you go back to asking the players and prospects and then create a section on here with accurate info?

#76 I hope Park and Jackman aren’t back next year.

A shame Pronger got away with yet another elbow and typically wouldn’t fight someone close to his size or that can fight. He wants to pick on the skill players but not answer the bell. Nothing tough about that guy.

  89. avatar Blizzard says:

…sign some kid named Nystrom. I cant hurt.

  90. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Hoping for an Isles victory at least 4-0. I want Philly to really understand they messed up by not getting Roli. Also, beating them on national tv is always good.

  91. avatar ed says:

Not too often that you see the Flyers not engage in fights. Asham backed away hard. Starting to remember why he frustrated me so much as an Islander. He would play very well for two games, then take 8 off

  92. avatar 7thWoman says:

Asham is still probably having problems with his wrist.

  93. avatar admin says:

Islanders on the power play early in the second.

  94. avatar ravens22 says:

when jon sim is playing the PP you know its been a long season

  95. avatar admin says:

power play over. 16:30 left in the second.

  96. avatar Julie says:

    Yea, Kinger is back

  97. avatar jc says:

Isles didn’t score on the pp? I’m in shock

  98. avatar ravens22 says:

it makes sense that the islanders PP is sponsored by the NY lotto. Because you are more likely to win the NY lotto then the islanders scoring on the PP

  99. avatar steve says:

Hillen is back to playing like a very good 2nd pair defenseman.

  100. avatar jc says:

Did Bruno play the point on the pp

  101. avatar 94.3 WMJC says:

Hey gang–i rebooted our stream–check again–if it’s still low audio let me know. As far I as I can see (and hear), everything looks fine with the WMJC stream at NHL.com

  102. avatar 7thWoman says:

The audio is fine now. Thank you.

  103. avatar Ray's Team says:

isles power play and lotto….”hey you never know”

  104. avatar admin says:

Still 1-0, 11:30 left in the second. No Islanders practice tomorrow, so I’m working on my next article while watching the game.

  105. avatar MJS says:

    Sick snipe. Boom.

  106. avatar Alex Kinkead says:

    KO

  107. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

    KO baby!

  108. avatar Staten Islander says:

    KO! YESSSSSSSSSSS!

  109. avatar Joe says:

    KO! Thats right!

  110. avatar Julie says:

    Wheeeee

  111. avatar admin says:

Okposo goal, 2-0. Lavi’s hair just fell out.

  112. avatar 7thWoman says:

If Sean Bergenheim scores tonight as well, it is obviously a sign of the apocalypse.

  113. avatar admin says:

    Roloson would have saved that.

  114. avatar JerseyIslander says:

KO!!!!! THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT!!!

  115. avatar dedshark says:

where has that shot been all season?

  116. avatar barney stinson says:

    Yeah KO!!

    Suit Up!

  117. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    That was a rocket….

  118. avatar Madchef says:

KO and JT, man when was the last time that happened……love it

  119. avatar TuxTax says:

Must have been the steak dinner?!?

  120. avatar Double W says:

for at least half of a game the future of the Islanders is looking really good.

  121. avatar Adam says:

Maybe they were inspired after going to the charity dinner on Sunday and hearing that they have the support of the fanbase.

  122. avatar dsb says:

tavares looks like a new man tonight. you see the speed he has goin into the zone without the puck.

  123. avatar Madchef says:

nice CB, but hey they didnt want to pay up.

  124. avatar ed says:

Must have been that the Islanders have an enforcer in the lineup and the kids are playing with some bravado. Obviously that is not the only reason, but do not discount it completely. Knowing someone has your back is important, especially with 19 and 20 year olds. They played well with Martin in the line up also. Snow is the only one who can’t see this correlation

  125. avatar admin says:

    Jeff Carter, 2-1

  126. avatar dedshark says:

atleast carter is on my fantasy team

  127. avatar Ray's Team says:

remember its not if its when

  128. avatar Staten Islander says:

They need to answer that, goal by Sim anyone?

  129. avatar islesfan16 says:

    nice pressure by gillies.

  130. avatar kevin fitz says:

Do the Flyers have the same goal song as the Isles?

  131. avatar Ray's Team says:

    our crash line is on

  132. avatar James says:

is it me or does philly and us have same goal chant

  133. avatar drive45 says:

    get bailey one too

  134. avatar Ray's Team says:

    yes same stupid goal song

  135. avatar admin says:

It’s trap time. Gordo wants the two points badly.

  136. avatar dedshark says:

if someone just complimented JTs skating…they coulda been a breakaway but man that was bad haha

  137. avatar dedshark says:

    that could have been **

  138. avatar Islesphan25 says:

The boys are playing very well….actually making tape to tape passes

  139. avatar Islefan says:

    What happened to Schremp?

  140. avatar steve says:

I’m glad we didn’t trade Bergenheim for a 3rd round pick. He looks like he may have gotten the message. He is playing with an intensity we haven’t seen in a while. That’s what I expect from a 3rd line “energy” winger.

  141. avatar Madchef says:

like i said earlier can gillies stick carcillo in the face

  142. avatar admin says:

Schremp has only played 4 minutes.

  143. avatar islestyle says:

    cb

frans nielsen has 6 PIMs all year. responsible young lad we got there

  144. avatar admin says:

That story I wrote yesterday? I meant to say Lady Byng!

  145. avatar Jim M says:

Kohn showing that he has no problem pulling Hartnell out of the crease after a save by Roloson. It’s the little things like that you like to see from a rookie player

  146. avatar 7thWoman says:

Yes, where is Robbie? This is where a Tweet from Ms. Katie would come in handy.

  147. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

Is Schremp’s 4 minutes of playing time because of injury? (wouldnt be surprised) or because he has been playing bad so far? Not near a TV sorry guys….

  148. avatar Travelchic59 says:

Did you just hear Carter comment on how small our “D” is???!!! UGH!!!

  149. avatar Cuillzy says:

WOW!!! JT is playing his best game in a long time. That’s good to see and KO has a wicket wrister. The guys we want to see score the most.

  150. avatar admin says:

Hasn’t been any word of an injury. My hunch is Schremp is in the temporary doghouse, as opposed to the Tambellini condo.

  151. avatar goteamgo says:

schremp hasnt played since the mdidle of the 1st , so id hedge hte bet on injury.. would you really bench a guy shortening your bench to really 10 players?

  152. avatar Strummer's Army says:

#148 I did hear him say that and thought the same thing as you. Anyway, the fans, the media, and everyone except Garth Snow seems to know our defense is small, not talented, and not physical.

I did like how Kohn pulled Hartnell out of the crease.

Schremp like many young (and old) Isles is looking to find consistency in his game.

If the announcers didn’t highlight Dough Weight I wouldn’t know he was playing.

  153. avatar steve says:

When’s the last time Okposo and Tavares both scored in a game?

  154. avatar 7thWoman says:

any hunch on WHY? what did I miss that was worth benching?

  155. avatar TuxTax says:

Love Schrempy, but he better start keeping control of the puck past the blueline on the PP. Maybe Gordon benched him for the attempted fungo that didnt make it out of the zone…

  156. avatar Jim M says:

The last time John Tavares and Kyle Okposo scored in the same game was back on November 14 when the Islanders lost at Florida 5-4 in the shootout. WOW

  157. avatar Jim M says:

Check that, November 13th in Carolina with a game winner in OT by KO

  158. avatar Madchef says:

did they really say we are outscored 30 something to 70 something in the 3rd period

  159. avatar Staten Islander says:

    Schrempy hurt

  160. avatar Julie says:

Why is Rolo doing a DP impression?

  161. avatar Isles9121 says:

    Shremp Is hurt Knee Injury

  162. avatar 7:11 says:

I thought shremp looked better than ever last game. Why would he be in the doghouse? Oh jafee just answered my question. Knee injury. Perfect.

  163. avatar 7thWoman says:

well, ain’t that just great. Just when things were looking up for a nano-second.

  164. avatar admin says:

Two more points for the Maple Leafs, beat Boston in OT.

  165. avatar admin says:

NOT that I’m following the draft lottery or anything.

  166. avatar 7thWoman says:

And again… the WMJC feed goes silent.

  167. avatar admin says:

I’m starting to feel pangs about missing my beloved Rob Carlin moment tonight.

  168. avatar Islesphan25 says:

I think we need a little +/- after this game CB….its been a while where we can objectively have one, considering the boys are playing well

  169. avatar Ray's Team says:

boarding on streit-like pronger didnt do that a few times tonite-wqay to be consistent refs

  170. avatar admin says:

    Flyers power play.

  171. avatar admin says:

    Flyers power play goal.

  172. avatar Madchef says:

    phark

  173. avatar Staten Islander says:

    BOOM goes the dynamite

  174. avatar Travelchic59 says:

Strummer, I don’t agree with you that our
defense has no talent. I was just shocked to hear an opposing player comment on their size. Players are usually very politically correct when speaking about the opposing team.

  175. avatar MattyB says:

Just send us to Kansas City already

  176. avatar WM says:

Sean Bergenheim helping us with the draft lottery!

  177. avatar steve says:

    Say goodnight.

  178. avatar admin says:

Flyers back on the power play.

  179. avatar Sean says:

Can we please get rid of bergie already. useless

  180. avatar 94.3 WMJC says:

    WMJC stream is fine, 7thwoman

  181. avatar Ray's Team says:

please flyers-put us out of our misery

  182. avatar MattyB says:

Yes lets get rid of Bergie and call up our talanted players on Bridgeport. Oh yea, they’re are none

  183. avatar 7thWoman says:

now it is, yes. Thanks. PS, three strikes and you’re out.

  184. avatar admin says:

Flyers power play is over. 9:04 left, tied at 2.

  185. avatar steve says:

Well, one team has fresh legs and the other doesn’t.

  186. avatar Staten Islander says:

still time for sim to score

  187. avatar Sean says:

If you ask me Matt Martin showed he should be in Bergies spot. At least Martin is noticed throughout the game. You forfget bergie is even playing sometimes

  188. avatar MattyB says:

I’m fine with the team this year. Didn’t expect anything from them. They did get better. Have been hit with long injuries again and have to many old veterans who should be gone this offseason. However, calling up players like Trever Gillies from Bridgeport to be absolutely useless in a game like this and mainly take up a roster spot is just plain dumb.

  189. avatar Madchef says:

gervais is painful to watch, horrible at clearing the puck

  190. avatar Madchef says:

best penalty of the night, harnell=tool

  191. avatar Ray's Team says:

    there goes gillies islanders career

  192. avatar admin says:

You can’t make this up. Trevor Gillies, who hasn’t played much, gets a late shift with game tied at 2-2 and takes a penalty.

  193. avatar Jim M says:

Why is this pathetic excuse for a hockey player Gillies in an nhl uniform?

  194. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

With his two points tonight I hope Gervais didn’t earn a contract extension.

  195. avatar 7thWoman says:

Is that the FOURTH time that Roloson has left his net and been bumped or knocked down?

  196. avatar MattyB says:

hahahahaha….and the streak will hit 15

  197. avatar Mark says:

Thank you Gillies! Your 15 seconds in the NHL is over!

  198. avatar Justin says:

See you Gilles, thanks for that goal

  199. avatar Rob76 says:

If it isn’t time after this game to start debating Taylor or Tyler i dont know when the time is…

  200. avatar admin says:

Power play goal Flyers, 3-2. Roloson looks so down.

  201. avatar Big Dog says:

thank gillies for that…unless isles get a point season OVER, anyone question this is insane.. honesty at its best

  202. avatar Julie says:

I just hate it when the other team wakes up.

  203. avatar Ray's Team says:

    this team is so saaaad

  204. avatar Bob says:

nice move Gordon….putting Gillies on the ice? you both belong back in the AHL

  205. avatar Travelchic59 says:

I think Rolii has been taking DP lessons. NOT A GOOD THING!!!

  206. avatar Brian says:

About Gillies staying around till at least Sunday…

  207. avatar Joe says:

Cant blame Gillies, there were several other terrible penalties earlier.

  208. avatar Julie says:

7thwoman, this radio silence would be your third strike, no?

  209. avatar Bob says:

also a typical clearing mistake by Gervais…make room for him on the bus too…oh yeah there is no one to replace him…way to go Snow

  210. avatar Mark says:

Yes you can blame Gillies, Bonehead play late in the game. The puck wasn’t even close to them.

  211. avatar YabbaDabbaDooDoo says:

Trevor Gilles on the ice with 7 mins left in a tie game?!

    GO-GOs gotta go.

  212. avatar Madchef says:

to all the people complaining about not having an enforcer pipe down about the bad penalty.

  213. avatar RobMSG says:

Hey CB– which Rob Carlin moment would you be referring to?

  214. avatar Andre says:

The Isles need to tank the rest of the season. Toronto is going to pass them. Hope Edmonton can pull of a miracle and pass them too.

  215. avatar Ajax says:

    good call Gordo

  216. avatar Islesphan25 says:

This is exactly what type of game it was going to be…The young guys played well…but come up a little short…exactly what we want right now

  217. avatar isleguy says:

i can only imagine how many times Gervais has failed to clear the puck and it then led to a goal this year. that’s what you get when you rely on #6 or #7 defensemen getting top 2 minutes

  218. avatar MJS says:

My how so unsurprising…I usually think that the Isles should use the trap, or at least focus on D in the third period when they have a lead, but the forecheck was working so well earlier in the game. They gave up on it half way through the second and have done nothing but take penalties since. Hopefully the team can turn up the forecheck again and tie it back up…

  219. avatar MattyB says:

So I’d take Seguin in the draft this year

  220. avatar 7thWoman says:

Strike 3 WMJC. I’m taking out the headset.

  221. avatar Ray's Team says:

    same old islanders

  222. avatar admin says:

Rob (213): I look forward to all postgame interviews with Coach.

  223. avatar Seth says:

keep raising those ticket prices Wang!

  224. avatar RichM says:

Is there a better play by play guy than Doc Emrick? He is great.

  225. avatar eric says:

    top three pick.

  226. avatar Big Dog says:

this team has lost its small layer of luster. ugh.. rattled so easily

  227. avatar admin says:

If these are the Islanders of early January, they will tie this game.

  228. avatar Fred says:

Nice to see KO being KO again! Lets see if he can’t bury one of these chances and tie this up, lets go Isles!

I know it’s been awhile since they’ve provided any heroics, but why not tonight?

  229. avatar jts brother says:

rolli should had been traded whaen the gettin was good

  230. avatar Ajax says:

I will bet they dont tie it, any takers?

  231. avatar King says:

100% Scott Gordon’s fault why is Gillies out their in a Tie game against one of the best teams in the league. He threw this game.

  232. avatar MattyB says:

CB, thats pretty funny haha. And by early january, you mean early January of 2009 right?

  233. avatar Doug says:

Why isn’t Martin up from Bridgeport? What an awful team…

  234. avatar admin says:

The Islanders have announced that Rob Schremp has an injured right knee and will be evaluated on Wednesday.

  235. avatar Julie says:

Oh, the irony of pulling your best player to increase your chances of scoring a goal…

  236. avatar Madchef says:

the good news continues….Gervais plays sometimes like your lil brother who you let play with the big kids

  237. avatar steve says:

Someone tell me again why they pick Gilles over wrecker? Wreckers younger faster and when he got a stupid penalty he was out! What lame management!!

  238. avatar 7thWoman says:

But this is not January and the streak will continue.

  239. avatar Islesphan25 says:

showing alot of fight…..nothing wrong with they have played tonite…there should be no complaining at all…

  240. avatar MattyB says:

Gillies and the Wrecker are both awful at hockey. Matt Martin should be up and he should stay up for good. No reason to ever have Gillies on an NHL roster.

  241. avatar Julie says:

    Ah, well.
    Thanks again, CB.

  242. avatar Patrick says:

Let every game the Isles are not involved with be worth three points the rest of the way. Geez I hate the F’ers (brillianr nickname).

  243. avatar Brian G says:

will Wang raise parking to 20 next season to make up for the empty seats next season?

  244. avatar Dan says:

I hate being a fan of this team. Up 2-0 about to break the 14 game lossing streak and they blow it.AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  245. avatar Madchef says:

and a few more hairs fall from my head

  246. avatar WM says:

Another blown 3rd period lead. I’m sorry but this flipping infuriating.

  247. avatar Fred says:

That felt all too familiar except that Tavares and KO scored. If we’re going to lose 3 to 2 then I’m glad it’s those two who got our goals.

Thanks CB, have a goodnight everyone.

  248. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

So much for that stat of the Isles record while leading after 2.

CB, do you think this season is a good step for the team and organization for the ‘rebuild’?

  249. avatar Islesphan25 says:

blow it???? unsure about that statement…

  250. avatar Isles fan in Ca says:

Thank you Trevor Gillies for helping with a better draft pick!!

  251. avatar jim says:

I can’t believe how much we suck. I mean the suckiest of suck!

  252. avatar jts brother says:

this is getting worst and worst. its almost like being in a abusive relationship and the abuser keeps apologising for the pain caused anjd you keep taking em back gamee after game after game

  253. avatar Big Dog says:

really… this team is what we all wanna see..rebuild ok but this team has no chance..dougy great leadership.. shame rolo will be wasted for playoffs while these sad sacks ponder future..
thank god i can watch the mets for 2 months hoping till all lost and then i can root for football..ughh.

  254. avatar TuxTax says:

Mud Skating for about 25 minutes lost this game. Oh well, it was entertaining…

  255. avatar ken says:

will the price of the draft party tickets be raised this year as well?

  256. avatar Ajax says:

    awesome

  257. avatar john says:

I feel like this team isnt getting any better. I know this is year 2 of the rebuild, but CB, what impact free agents (top 4 dmen or top 6 fwd) would want to come here. The steps this franchise is making makes me think we wont be good for 5 -10 more years.

  258. avatar Ajax says:

    PLEEEEAAAASSSEEEEE FIRE GORDON!!!!!

  259. avatar Matt S. says:

Scott Gordon showed us tonight that he is tanking the season. biggest face off of the night, goalie pulled, 13 seconds…. and he tells A WINGER to take the face off. we had our best face off guy on the ice and he tells K.O. to take it instead.

  260. avatar Bocks44 says:

I have to say that I like Gordon as a coach, but I do not understand his decision for the call up tonight. Gillies was horrible. He cost the team the game with that ridiculous penalty. There were so many better options with Trevor Smith, Jesse Joensue, and Trevor Smith. I do not understand why he sends up these scrubby goons such as Gillies, Rechlicz, and Fritz (last year). They are worthless.

  261. avatar Will C. says:

We are in year two of a rebuild. Duschene is doing better because he isn’t the ONLY threat, like JT has been. Col, TB, they have a second line or more. Give it time. I feel bad we couldn’t get Roli to CHI so he could make a run. The 1st period was our best period of hockey all year.

  262. avatar Michael P. says:

217- i agree even when Gervais has a decent game he still finds a way to cost them a goal. What can ya do, they played hard and even had lead. You can say we got out “talented” tonight as the flyers stars scored when they needed them too. If they play like that rest of year i can live with it, the top 5 pick won’t be such a bad thing

  263. avatar O.Bender says:

If a loss can be considered good, it was a good one. The primary guys scored and hopefully out of slumps. They competed hard and if it wasn’t for unfortunate penalties might have come away with a win. Gervais played well for a change.

  264. avatar Doug says:

This is no rebuild…if this was a rebuild Martin and Jesse J. would be up here. Wang is holding the fans hostage…watch over the summer he’s going to say if you don’t buy tickets to the games he’s going to move…I’ve been an Islanders fan since 1872 and I’ve just about had it…

  265. avatar drive45 says:

CB start the draft watch. We are currently in 3rd place and gaining on Toronto fast. Go Leafs.

  266. avatar Dmoney says:

I know whats coming, but everytime it still hurts. Cant wait till this team is a winning one. They better beat them April 1st or else i will really cry. Screw philly.

  267. avatar Doug says:

    sorry 1972…

  268. avatar Brian G says:

I’m glad Sim sees the ice for a rebuilding team…get a clue Snow

  269. avatar Michael P. says:

251- Money will talk, they might have to over pay but with the cap room they can get a free agent or two. Imagine how much better this team would be with a top 4 D-man and a scoring winger

  270. avatar german islesfan says:

frustrating loss..stupid penalties cost us the game.Seguin is my choice.

  271. I can’t do this anymore. So many guys on this team really need to go.

  272. avatar Staten Islander says:

Good game, I just want to see them beat them again in my lifetime

  273. avatar Madchef says:

thanks CB, Love this team even though they rip my heart out. Sometimes I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day with this team

  274. avatar Will C. says:

I’m going to columbus for the game later this month. 2nd game I’ve been to over the past 2 years I am rooting for the opposition. Wanted JT and now we need another top 3.

  275. avatar dedshark says:

i will never root against them to lose…but i just want toronto to win…cause they got nothing to lose this season considering they dont have a first rd pick. we might be able to sneak into bottom 2..with 3rd at worst

  276. avatar Booten326 says:

really getting tired of these blown leads…comes with the territory of a small young team I suppose.

P.S. CB I don’t think it’s too early to start the TyTaylCam watch!

  277. avatar Dan says:

Does anyone know what Bergie did to get a penalty after the flyers scored the 2nd pp goal. And yea this team is killing me – I really can’t take it anymore.

  278. avatar Deadhead654 says:

Well, that didn’t suck, and I’m not bitter. Gilles, nice!

  279. avatar john says:

but Michael, give me some options. Hamhuis, Volchenkov and Marleau – they are not coming here. And I still dont get why this team wasnt able to dump Bergie, Tamby, Parky or Weight, along with Biron at the deadline for picks

  280. avatar ken says:

    - how does playing sim over tamby, enhance the youth movement.

    - why is everyone on this team afraid of scott hartnall. when hartnall and an islander are going for a loose puck, it is certain the islander will slow up

  281. avatar Joe says:

Gillies only got called cause hes a fighter, that was a legal hit.

  282. avatar Joe says:

The hit was clearly from the side.

  283. avatar Cairns311 says:

Bergie played well tonight i thought. Gervais is just a disaster of epic proportions.

  284. avatar Ajax says:

The losses and poor play doesnt bother me as much as Gordon and Snows lies they feed their fan base … AKA those who supply their pay

  285. avatar pete says:

Why isn’t Matt Martin up here instead of Gillies!?!?!

  286. avatar Isles4Ever says:

Two boaring calls against the Isles WTF…We can’t play physical against the dirtiest team in the league..seriously. What were the refs watching when Pronger is throwing elbows all o ver the ice. Another game were the Isles work hard and get shafted. the Isles should have nothing to feel bad about in this game, they played hard.

  287. avatar Rich says:

Did Snow bring up Trevor to insure a loss.
Poor Roloson he is playing in front of a AHL Defense. So much wrong with this situation. If they are rebuilding why are Park, Sim , Jackman playing over Martin, Tambelini and Jonesssu. If they are trying to make the playoffs why did they trade Sutton and not try and replace McDonald. Lastly wtf would anyone bring up Trevor Gillies. I am done see you next season..

I can only hope that in an alternate universe Wang mad CB GM instead of Snow

  288. avatar Michael P. says:

279- there are alot of good free agents this offseason, they will get a couple i am sure. They need to get to cap floor for one reason and i know it is hard to believe but a top 4 D and a scoring winger makes this team a whole lot better. The right 3 or 4 moves and they could at least push for playoff spot next year, they did this year until the last 25 games of season.

  289. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

I hoped we finally beat Flyers. But NO!
    Oh well..
    When they’re going to learn?.

  290. avatar john says:

How bout that Matt Duchene – if Garth would ever get some wingers to play with our #1. Oh well.

  291. avatar john says:

    287 – Give me some names – I just don’t see it.

  292. avatar Merrick says:

    M-I-C, K-E-Y….M-O-U-S-E.

  293. avatar Ajax says:

    (287) sorry, no “good” free agent will sign here. Our team is a mess.

  294. avatar Doug says:

Michael P you’re 100% right but for some reason this team just doesn’t seem to want to get better. I think Garth thinks the NHL Draft are the playoffs…

  295. avatar john says:

Go Panthers. They rallied to pick up at least a point tonight

  296. avatar Will C. says:

Good point about the Tamby. I know it’s beating a dead horse, but remember how we stunk with a team of role players. Give him 82 games and see what he can do. Going by his scoring clip in a full year this year he would score 20-25. That is what we want right?!?

  297. avatar Islesrock says:

I am a big Gordon fan, but what a very poor move putting Gillies out there. As soon as I saw him come over the boards, I told my son to prepare for trouble. It’s silly to put your goon out with seven minutes to go, especially when he has no NHL experience. This loss is on Gordon!

I am OK tanking this year again for a top pick, but thats it. I will give up my season tix if we do not bulk up with some talented players on defense and forward via trades or free agency. We are going to destroy our good young core players with the lack of talented, hard nosed veteran players.

  298. avatar isles71 says:

said after atlanta game, will not win 3 out of 19 games left!!!! thank goodness it was on versus and blacked out on dierctv or I would have smashed tv!!!!!!! why do we bother…should have doctors examine the whole lot of us…yet we come back for more…come on boys!!!

  299. avatar Doug says:

Ajax, I disagree…if the Islanders want to spend, they could bring in a couple of free agent players…

  300. avatar john says:

If the Islanders want to keep their fan base on L.I., there is only one option- ILYA !!!!

  301. avatar eye on the island says:

enough w/ the no free agents will sign here-money talks and there’s probably only a handful of places better to be rich then long island

this season is going perfectly-some hope, and now some more building blocks

kudos to gillies to contributing to the greater good

  302. avatar onesinceforty says:

It is hysterical to see the Stanger gets like 2 or 3 comments on her posts. CB is over 300 just tonight. I kind of half read her from the iphone because it only blocks you about 90%.

  303. avatar Doug says:

    (301)you’re 100% right…spend some money and they will come…

  304. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Well … the silver lining to this loss … I won a bet that I made before the game started.. That the Isles would lose 3-2 after taking a lead into the 3rd. Cheese Steaks at Pats.

  305. avatar Jay says:

Strong start, 2 goal lead, and the inevitable 3rd period collapse. Right according to planned. Thanks for feeding the entire versus crew even more postgame ammunition guys. “Who owns the islanders?….Oh yeah…THE FLYERS DO.”

    So damn embarrasing.

  306. avatar mtrico says:

I just don’t understand why Gillies was up for this game, and why he was on the ice in the third period with the score tied. You can’t make this stuff up, no one would believe you.

  307. avatar dave says:

this game wasnt lost because of gillies penalty. what about streits boarding penalty? what about bergys high sticking penalty? what about nyis lack of hustle in the 3rd? what about putting jackman with tavares? what about sim on the PP? what about weight on the PP? the game was lost because of gordon, not gillies.

  308. avatar thetruth says:

What a perfect day! Snow calls up gillies, he costs us the game. The isles lose but okposo and tavares score. Plus the maple leafs win in ot. Pinch me, I must be dreaming.

  309. avatar King says:

    Taylor Hall here we come.

  310. avatar john says:

Panthers win … Panthers win …

    Let’s go Jackets!!!

Seems like a broken record, but the TY-TAYL-CAM-GUDBR watch begin!!!

  311. avatar eastonhockey says:

The season was over when they traded the 2nd best defensmen for a 3rd rounder. I’m sure it also had to do with the salary wang saved not having to pay sutton. 300 grand is like what 200 season tickets? Its all about the $$$. A great season by the NY Islanders acording to Wang? Lowest paid coach, lowest paid players..and lowest amount of points so we can have the best draft postion..which we always mess up anyway”

  312. avatar admin says:

19 in NJ (304): I would have insisted on Jim’s Steaks on South St.

  313. avatar Doug says:

Hey King…on Coaches Corner Saturday Night, Don Cherry said that Taylor Hall will be playing in Edmonton next year. The way the Islanders are playing, he might be wrong….

  314. avatar Matt S. says:

the only excuse for K.O. taking that face off at the end was because they wanted to lose. its like when they put Witt in the shoot-out.

  315. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

I hate the flyers almost as much as the rags! They brought in the wrong trevor, should have been smith.

  316. avatar Cairns311 says:

All i want for christmas is Taylor Hall!

  317. avatar Lorne Myers says:

Time for a top 3 pick, the only games that I care about winning are the two remaining Ranger games.

  318. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Not going to blame Trevor Gillies for the penalty. Wish he wouldn’t have done it but he was trying to do good. Certainly there were several penalties on the Flyers the refs chose not to call, especially at crucial points in the game.

    Overall good effort.

My question is this since everyone knew last year (actually years before but Snow, Ryan, and Gordo acknowledged it last season) the defense was too small, soft, and not talented enough WHY DIDN’T SNOW DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT? Not just the defense but the rest of the team. Seriously Snow assembled this roster it was his choice for it to be so small and it annoys me because it isn’t competitive. Do you want to know why the Flyers have such a long winning streak against NYI? They are big and phsyical and the Isles don’t do well against teams like that.

I’d like to see JJ, Riechlecz & Martin when his face is healed called up but Snow probably doesn’t want to mess up the draft pick.

Snow has to show us he’s serious about improving next year and to start that means no more, Weight, Sim, Jackman, Park, Hunter, Tambelleni, Geravis, Martinek, Witt, & Meyer.

  319. avatar matt says:

fire gordon this team has gotton worse as the season has gone on not better he is a awful bench coach and his line combos are just as awful

  320. avatar Joe says:

    Great post Strummer

  321. avatar the1gwiz says:

A very strong game from Bruno, yet still a big oopsy. Siiiigh.

  322. avatar RY212 says:

Gillies had only one thing to remember tonight (not to take any dumb penalties) and he simply couldn’t do it.

  323. avatar Bruce says:

Does anyone know why JJ wasn’t brought up for this game? He would have brought a lot more than Giles?

Sad to say it but let the TY-TAYL-CAM-GUDBR watch begin!!!

  324. avatar Ray says:

Dave 307 you hit the nail on the head.

  325. avatar ACISLES says:

I live in Toronto Life long Isles fan and am finally going to watch a game a the Colisseum this Sunday against the Laughs. Please if they only win 1 more game this season let it be that one….

  326. avatar Jzimm says:

No can do, ACISLES, that could be the game that helps bring Hall or Seguin to Long Island and helps keep them out of Boston. Sorry, go to a game next year.

  327. avatar Boss15 says:

The kids played well for he most part, which is nice to see, hopefully Schremp’s injury is minor. Looking ahead at the schedule, April will most likely be a winless month. The rest of this month has several games we could win, Toronto, Anaheim, Columbus and two against the Rangers, but I have a strong feeling that the plan is to tank from here on in.

  328. avatar jonsson3 says:

Someone tell DocEmrick that it is O-poSo not
    OpoZZo.

  329. avatar Ethan K says:

Well, we’re that much closer to locking up a top 3 pick. Any of the top 3 would be a HUGE, HUGE benefit for us. I think Gordon and Snow realize that, which is why Trevor Gillies got that extra ice time. At least Tavares had a goal to get him out of the slump a bit, and Okposo showing some of his offensive talent with an absolute rocket. Roloson is clearly getting back on his game since he’s not really sharing the net anymore… put Biron in for a couple games before he gets too comfortable!

  330. avatar JerseyIslander says:

To those worried about the small stature of our defense, not to worry… In a couple of years our biggest guys will be the goalies… Haha…

  331. avatar billy says:

    plus- first 40 minutes
plus- Gervais (my goodness he looked like an nhler out there)
    plus- Tavs
    plus- hillen

minus- final 20 minutes where we turtled for the first 18 minutes, i think i’m just gonna stop watching our 3rd periods because we are absolutely pathetic when the game is on the line
minus- no one knocking hartnell’s lights out. There’s guys in this league that you hate but would love on your team. Hartnell is a guy i hope never ever wears the blue and orange, he needs his bell rung badly.

  332. avatar CJCB says:

Didnt watch the game cause to much non physical Islanders games has caught up to me. No real interest in ealry style of play. Noticed Gilles played 7 min. Also notice the non fighting fans ready to run a guy out of town because he took a penalty, OMG this guy does not belong in the NHL because he fights and took a penalty like no “skilled” players take dumb penalties( this would likely include every Islander currently playing at any level in organiation) How about picking up the guy and killing the penalty? Oh i forgot we have elite skilled penalty killers on this team?? Yeah right, Gilles is not the problem and again not having seen the game its hard for me to comment but he HAS to play that style of game for the Islanders to start losing the label of smallest least physical team in the league. Sto worrting about the perfect game and start worrying about this team regaining the respect of the fellow tough players out and about in the league, maybe from there our elite young players might to start to find more room to display their talents.

  333. avatar Peter says:

Dissapointed in the result but the effort was better.
Tough call on Gillies causing too many so called supporters to get their panties in a knot. Instead of ragging on the role players like him and Jackman(7 hits btw), start asking where’s the offence. We can’t score!
Also when on the road, a team like the Islanders will always get the short end of the stick for penalty calls. It always happens in Philly and New Jersey. Refs seem to have a blind eye when Pronger’s acting up.
For all of those questioning how come Rechlisz and Martin aren’t up. Martin is hurt(facial laceration from a skate requiring 18 stitches) and Joel hasn’t demonstrated he can do the job in the minors.

  334. avatar battfist says:

Like the effort…hope Schremp is ok.

Any chance Trevor Smith gets called up? I realize he is a winger…but they say he has some skill.

  335. avatar Matt S. says:

i healthy Tim Jackman is barely useful on most nights…. a bucket-head wearing Tim Jackman is totally useless. why give Sim one more minute of play? he won’t be back next season.

  336. avatar Sheppy says:

Trevor Gillies did not cost us the game. Guys like to be too simplistic in their explanations for things. Mistakes were made throughout the game. Gillies was trying to play physically. Man, what a concept! If you want to blame Gillies, step back, remove any blame you place on him, and place it on the guy who put him on the ice. If I have an attack dog, and I let him play with your children and one gets bitten, who is to blame? The dog? You guys are blaming the damn dog! Guys are clamoring for this player or that player. Replace Gillies with another player. Play the games. Any different results? This team is not about swapping one fourth line player for another. Snow brought up a physical player because the team has been getting manhandled. Wake up. This was the right move. No need to rush Martin. He’s not ready. Sure he had a few good games. Sure I was excited to watch him play. Sure I wish he was playing now. However, give him some time to develop. The same guys clamoring for him, will be the same guys blaming Snow for rushing him when he is making boneheaded plays or if he does not develop.

  337. avatar doug says:

Hey Islanders start acting like a NY team or move to Kansas City…

  338. avatar schnip says:

16 more games left, best part about next season – getting rid of those terrible water swimy jerseys… its embarassing with our play and we have the worst jerseys in the league

  339. avatar 4theisles says:

    Minus—–s to Wang and Snow.

I am fine with the results. Good effort, Okposo and JT scored. We don’t need or want the 2 points at this stage.

I agree with Dough… in a stretch. Between the Knicks, Rangers, Mets, Yankees, Giant and Jets all the core NY teams always are trying to improve every season except the Isles. Us New Yorkers dont have patientce for a rebuild, we have way more better things to do then sit and wait.

Best thing a Gillies has done since the 80′s. Great job taking that penalty. That will help the Isles more in the long run than an meaningless win. Hope we keep losing.

i can tell you how many times i have said that having a goon/enforcer is totally pointless. You need to be able to skate and play.

Gillie did nothing to help and helped us lose the game taken dumb penalty in 2-2 games.

I thought tavares would score 2 but i will take one. his confidence got immediate boost after he played.

These constant third period collapses that have occurred in the Gordon era are causing me concern. Is his system too tiring for the players, is their lack of size causing them to be worn down? I would not expect this to be resolved anytime soon. The kids the organization is counting on for the future are all small and we know Snow will not be spending a lot of money over the summer. Plus he seems to shy away from signing tougher players. I fear next year could be worse than this year, record wise, as our defense will not only be smaller, but younger and more inexperienced.

I don’t understand why everybody is saying that this team is a bunch of kids. IMO there are only 3 kids out there – Okposo, Bailey and Tavares. The rest of the team are older players.
