ISLANDERS 5 VANCOUVER 2
Five-point night for John Tavares

by admin on March 16th, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Two goals and three assists for John Tavares, which ties an Islanders rookie record. First NHL goal by Dylan Reese. After the Islanders swept last weekend, I asked Scott Gordon if there was any reason why a young team playing loose couldn’t win games on this West coast trip. He said there weren’t any reasons at all, as long as they played within themselves. With the win, the Islanders remain seven points behind eighth-place Boston and jump over Florida for 12th in the East.

  1. avatar admin says:

Good evening, everyone. I suspect it will be a little more quiet in here, with the late EST start. But what the heck. Enjoy the game.

  2. avatar admin says:

I’ll have something on the Town of Hempstead letter on Wednesday. Tonight, let’s talk hockey.

  3. avatar admin says:

Kyle Okposo is out with an upper body injury. Dwayne Roloson is in net.

  4. avatar Frans Dish says:

CB – If the Isles were granted with the 2nd overall pick who do you think they would take Cam Fowler or Tyler Seguin? Assuming Hall goes number 1.

  5. avatar Ray's Team says:

hunter and his “towering power” are back!

  6. avatar Ajax says:

CB – I was looking for you at Social for the Bobby Ny, Mike Bossy dinner. It was a good time.

  7. avatar Islesphan25 says:

CB…I will be up here with you all night…Writing a paper and lesson plans…

  8. avatar mm30 says:

    CB-

Loved the Hawks work last week.

Pavel Kubina/Willie Mitchell/Alexei Ponikarovsky is my wish list.

Any clue if they will be on the summer radar?

    Keep up the good stuff.

  9. avatar 7thWoman says:

wow, the alarm on my phone actually works. I hate west coast road trips. do we get to buy a vowel on what’s wrong with kyle?

  10. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Hey CB, just joining in. Do the Nucks have any willing partners for T-Gil? I know probably won’t be needed but I am itching to see this guy fight (other than youtube).

  11. avatar Staten Islander says:

    Good to see Jiggs tonight

  12. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    #10…

yes they do…not sure if they dress him..not a real fighter but will fight anyone….

  13. avatar Jzimm says:

ISS released their mid-term rankings. Tyler Seguin is ranked #1.

  14. avatar Lorne says:

    When did KO get hurt?

  15. avatar admin says:

Bruins win and Carolina lose, in the same game. Not a good result (in either race) for the NYI.

Another sparkling example of the first-rate commentary you can only get on Point Blank.

  16. avatar admin says:

Islanders go on the power play just 31 seconds in.

  17. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Getting jiggy with it! 4-3 Isles. Bailey, COmeau and Streit with 2.

  18. avatar Captain Crunch says:

Ugh. Center Ice only offering up Canucklepuck feed of the game. Here come the Homers. D’oh. … Nice of them to always show the singing of the national anthems. Whitney Dyck? Are you kidding me? Sounds like my sports programming got mixed up with Skinemax.

  19. avatar Bryan says:

Are the Islanders going to have a full lineup tonight?

  20. avatar 7thWoman says:

With Jiggs calling and me still trying to wake up — I’m having flashbacks. what year is it?

  21. avatar bryan says:

Good work by Jackman early on.

  22. avatar DJMC93 says:

I agree with Billy J, nice move by gordo dressing and starting tamby in front of his family

  23. avatar admin says:

The Islanders have responded to my query about Okposo by saying that he has an upper body injury and is listed as out day-to-day.

  24. avatar ant says:

Gillies not playing. So if someone takes a run at one of our young guys we have no one on this team willing to drop the gloves.

  25. avatar mm30 says:

    REESE!

    Good work by Johnny Hockey.

  26. avatar Staten Islander says:

    Congrats to Dylan Reese

  27. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

    Amazing stick work by Tavares!

  28. avatar Rob76 says:

Wooooo strong play by JT he earns that assist – congrats Dylan – now lets lose and get a top 2 pick

  29. avatar admin says:

First NHL goal by Dylan Reese, with Moulson screening Luongo.

  30. avatar Captain Crunch says:

    Reese scores! Sweet.

  31. avatar Ray's Team says:

    reese with a nice wreester!!!

  32. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

Great road opening by the Isles. Skating hard, finishing checks, getting on the board.

  33. avatar admin says:

NYI about to go on another PP.

  34. avatar Lenny says:

    JT looks great tonight

  35. avatar kevin fitz says:

This is the best I have seen Tavares play in 4 months. Great things to come from this kid.

  36. avatar dedshark says:

JT looking like the number 1 pick again wow

  37. What’s up with Okposo?

Isles look good through first 7 minutes – but can we get a power-play goal? Good pressure to start though…..

  38. avatar Examiner says:

what a play by the islanders to get that goal. That is how you draw it up. Great pass from JT, perfect dual screen by Moulson and Jackman, and a shot on net by Reese.

I just got quite the craving for a peanut butter cup.

  39. avatar MAD FAN says:

I wonder if Garth had any offers for Moulson?

  40. avatar Giaco says:

Good job getting the shot on net. Congrats reesey

anyone else like vancouvers uni’s??? I like these and the wild’s red jersey

  41. avatar Ray's Team says:

    our PP is horrendous!

  42. avatar DeHaamonic says:

CB – Great Job as always. How many players on the team now do you think are future top 6 forwards? and top 4 defensemen?

  43. avatar Volmeeezy says:

CB- have you heard anything else regarding the April 1st deadline to re-new season tix?

  44. avatar pedro says:

Agreed. This is the best Tavares has looked in months. Showing lots of confidence.

  45. avatar Rob76 says:

wow JT is getting a TON of icetime early on

  46. avatar michele says:

isles looking good so far. Playing like they want to win. Whats wrong with them? Don’t they like hafowseg?

  47. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Bruno needs to bury these chances. I like the way he his offensive game has improved this year and the way he has been jumping in the play, but he needs to work on his finishing. I think he then could really be a solid 2 way D-man.

  48. avatar admin says:

Volmeezy (42): I don’t know what else there is to know. I know it’s a real deadline or your prices go up. I could have something on that subject later in the week, next week at the latest. Not sure. Going to Boston Thursday for the rematch against Matt Cooke.

  49. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    CB….can I come…I will buy dinner..

  50. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

Park looked confident and sharp on that shift.

  51. avatar admin says:

    Another NYI PP

  52. avatar Staten Islander says:

Boy when they’re moving and buzzing around, they look REALLY good

  53. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Great article, CB! Do you get the feeling that Cambell is so entrenched that he almost can’t get fired? Almost feels like Cambell is to the NHL what MM was to Wang and the Islanders for all of those years.

  54. avatar HubieMac39 says:

    Way to go JT!

  55. avatar Giaco says:

    jtttttttttttttttttttt

  56. avatar Hollywood says:

I’ve been as frustrated with Bruno as anyone but I love how aggressive he is especially in the offensive zone. His play has been improving and it’s been fun to watch.

    PP goal!

  57. avatar kevin fitz says:

You knew JT was gonna score tonight

  58. avatar Lenny says:

    YES!
    JT

  59. avatar Bob Bassen says:

    Wow! JT!

  60. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

    TAVARES!

  61. avatar Captain Crunch says:

JT!!!! Hanging around the net like it’s October all over again.

  62. avatar Danbury Islanders Fan says:

    JT!

  63. avatar steve says:

    Tavares goal…and an assist

    Woo hoo

  64. avatar admin says:

John Tavares looking dominant. Goal. 2-0

  65. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

And heeeeeeeeere’s JOHNNY!! What this kid is doing this game he needs to do every game.

  66. avatar BrianAlbany says:

Best I have seen Tavares play all year so far

  67. avatar Giaco says:

    he’s heating uppp

  68. avatar Jim M says:

Am I dreaming? 2 points for JT!!

  69. avatar 7thWoman says:

how wonderful would it be to chase “bobby Lu” from his net?

  70. avatar Radek says:

Season is not over yet boys!~

  71. avatar Will C. says:

CB- John Buccigross just posted a similar article to yours about the NHL being out of line with discipline. You have started the charge my friend.

What do you think the long term value of JT is 30-35 goals/ 80pts?

  72. avatar Hollywood says:

    Excellent start!

  73. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Canucks sleepwaking so far. Isles will need to be ready when they wake up. The corwd is a big factor here when Van has the mo.

  74. avatar Captain Crunch says:

We need to be careful against anything that remotely resembles a penalty. The crowd’s royally ticked and the refs will feel the pressure to make calls in favor of the home team.

  75. avatar Frans Dish says:

beaut of a play by hillen to lift henrik stick

  76. avatar Frans Dish says:

Tavares blocking shots now?! who is this guy wearing 91?

  77. avatar Staten Islander says:

    JT blocking a shot…WOW!

  78. avatar Terry19 says:

I’d give a lot for Kesler!!!

  79. avatar AY says:

Love how pissed Jaffi seems about the vancouver media

  80. avatar Cairns311 says:

    Tambellini love anyone!

  81. avatar Brother Rat says:

Go Isles, sounds like they have a lot of pep in their step tonight (via the internet/radio near-simulcast).

For those keeping score at home, JT’s last two-point game was December 9th! That’s crazy.

With JT’s energy this game, he may just get that Gordie Howe hat trick….

  82. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Don’t know about anyone else here, but I have the Canucks old Burger King yellow and black sweaters with the big V down the middle seared on my brain

  83. avatar bryan says:

Jaffe is feeling frisky tonight isnt he?? screw draft picks, this team needs to build some confidence and spend some money.

  84. avatar Dan says:

Jaffe said the the Vancouver papers were all over the Islanders in an unflattering lite. Vancouver has a pretty good team and I know the Isles have their issues but that is pretty disrespectful so even though I want the pick this team needs a good butt whipping.

  85. avatar Frank nyc says:

JT is really looking energized over these past few games. 2 points tonight, is very nice. He is at 38 on the season. I believe 45 pts is def. within reach. That wouldnt be to bad for the rookie.

  86. avatar Captain Crunch says:

You knew the next penalty would be ours. Frack.

  87. avatar Mike from VA says:

Haha, Jeff Tamb gonna end up right back in the dog house taking lazy penalties like hooking in the offensive zone. This guy is done. Some people are career AHLer’s and thats where he belongs. Bring back martin.

  88. avatar Brian says:

Not to nitpick CB, but the game was a late EDT start, not EST.

  89. avatar M Howard says:

1 goal, 2 pts, hits and blocked shots for JT! Is that really him or Rick Nash?

  90. avatar admin says:

This is the point of the night when the home team coach screams at his team and the next goal means a lot.

  91. avatar Jim M says:

Hanging that newspaper article in the locker room, looks like the team itself is taking the media bashing personal. Stick it to Vancouver boys!

  92. avatar JT says:

Chris, will Tamby market his miracle groin pull cure?

  93. avatar dedshark says:

is there something about the end of the season that gervais starts playing very well? i remember last year after campoli was traded bruno stepped up at the end of the year.

  94. avatar Islesfan is Vancouver says:

I’m taking credit for jt’s great play since I’m finally able to see the isles live

  95. avatar Pete says:

Have you heard anything about how the season tix sales are going?

  96. avatar Big Dog says:

theyre playing well.. getting to loose pucks.. passing well.. backchecking well too..

    happy times so far.

  97. avatar tonysac says:

Where can I find this Vancouver article disrespecting OUR team?

  98. avatar JT says:

It’s great to hear Jiggs. What a treat. Chris, how is Eddie Westfall? Would love to see him on a broadcast again too.

  99. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Botta, any word on Koskonin? I’d think with a hip injury they wouldn’t give him a super heavy load but I’m sure they’d like to get him some games in the AHL and perhaps the ECHL before the year is up. He was performing well before his injury.

  100. avatar mm30 says:

Wow…on Twitter it sure seems like the Canucks fans are already planning their parade.

  101. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

For those interested, the Vancouver article that Billy was ranting about is in The Province, and the headline is “No Guarantee this time, but…”. If you google that, you’ll find it.

  102. avatar Nate says:

Vancouver need to be careful going for the #1 seed, not sure who would want to meet up with Detroit if they end up in 8th.

  103. avatar Ray's Team says:

jiggs-”the free fall for taylor hall”

  104. avatar Ethan K says:

Bruno Gervais looking pretty good, Tavares looking great, Comeau looking great. We’re all finishing our checks, and look how it helps.

I want to see Streit shoot on net more.

  105. avatar Brian B says:

dedshark….good point. I’m not a Gervais fan at all. I think he has been horrible all year and for the last 3-4 years he’s been more bad then good. But he can skate and handle the puck. In some games…like this one, and a few at the end of last year, he has shown the ability to play some good games and make an impact. And obviously Gordon sees something in him, giving him tons of minutes and pp time. Hopefully he plays well as the season closes and never looks back.

  106. avatar izzo says:

LOL, now we’re all back on the JT bandwagon, are we? I love the impatience and lack of perspective involving this kid.

Good to see him performing again. A game like this is giving us a glimpse of what this kid will be capable of when he fills out and matures. But we need to give The Savior time to get there. Patience is the key.

  107. avatar Reese in Chelsea says:

Boys played a fantastic, fiery, forechecking first. I think Jiggsy is a good luck charm—his voice immediately takes me back to middle/early high school.
The Isles are getting their collective noses dirty and it’s a pleasure to watch. I’m a huge JT fan and it’s been great to see this hard-working kid get the monkey off his back.Roloson is seeing the puck tonight, that’s for sure.
Looks like Dec. all over again

  108. avatar admin says:

The Vancouver Province is just lame and does it so people talk about them and give their site clicks. It doesn’t mean anything, but as you can see their plan is effective.

  109. avatar HubieMac39 says:

    Nice reaction header from Rolo

  110. avatar Staten Islander says:

OK, who is in Gervais’ jersey?

  111. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Couldve been 3 there. Bailey was all alone in front. Too bad the pass was in his skates.

  112. Why didn’t the ref move when Streit was retrieving the puck behind the net???

  113. avatar 7thWoman says:

Bruno has had some very good moments the past few months. they are just accompanied with lapses in judgement.

  114. avatar M Howard says:

JT draws his second penalty! Could his determined play tonight be a result of him playing in Canada? Is there anything to be worried about if he picks up his game for Canada games?

  115. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Great moves from Hunter and Moulson. Luongo will be kissing the posts.

  116. avatar M Howard says:

Three posts in the game now

  117. avatar Staten Islander says:

Canucks look like they’re waking up

  118. avatar Big Dog says:

sense of desperation in cnucks game..
rolo on right now..these guys making me drink and its not st pats yet..

  119. avatar Lenny says:

having a little bit of a man crush on Hillen

  120. avatar TuxTax says:

You couldve tuned a piano with Moulson’s ping off the post

  121. Big d-play by Jack Hillen

  122. avatar steve says:

Glad to see they also have ice issues in Canada.

  123. avatar isles316 says:

It’s my birthday and I drank too much at a local bar but I’m proud how the Isles are playing. Lets get this win!

  124. avatar 7thWoman says:

    Another chance for JT! wow!

  125. avatar HubieMac39 says:

    JT hits post again!

  126. avatar Jzimm says:

Is this team peaking at the wrong time, or what?

  127. avatar isles316 says:

JT has hit about 9 posts this year

  128. avatar HubieMac39 says:

SOG 0 Posts 3 for Isles so far this period

  129. avatar Yashin for President says:

Ive said this before, Hillen brings so much energy and intelligence to the Isles. Takes pressure off of Streit and the other Dmen. We have to sign him long term. I would definitely do something similar to the Mcdonald deal. Maybe pay him a little more but the term should be at least 4 years. Wouldnt be surprised if Snow gives it to him this summer. I know he is signed for another year but show him the respect and get it done at the end of the season. He just keeps getting better and better..

  130. avatar nystrom23 says:

    3 point night for JTTTTTTTTT

  131. avatar dedshark says:

    COULSON HAHAHA I LOVE YOU!!!

  132. avatar Staten Islander says:

    MATT COULSON!

  133. avatar steve says:

    Who is wearing #91?

  134. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

    Coulson!

  135. avatar Ethan K says:

HAHAHAHHAHA Jaffe just said “don’t you mean Coulson?”

  136. avatar admin says:

    Goal Moulson. 3-0.

  137. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Great work on that shift. Beautiful pass from JT to set up MM for some cushion

  138. avatar Isles 420 says:

    WOW WHAT A SETUP!!!

  139. avatar dedshark says:

I sat tavares on my fantasy team…damnit!!! lol

  140. avatar Brian H says:

    Catt Coulson with the coal!

  141. avatar Captain Crunch says:

Dig it. If it stays 3-0 at 10 mins of the third, it’ll be Send in the Goons Time for the Canucks. We brought Gillies with us, no?

  142. avatar Big Dog says:

awesome strong on the puck play…..goal

  143. avatar admin says:

    3-1. Kyle Wellwood.

  144. avatar Captain Crunch says:

    Son of a #*$!@%* #*@!~ !!!!!

  145. avatar dedshark says:

    Catt Coulson with the coal!
    HAHAHAHAHAH i cant stop laughing

  146. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Big rebound from Rolo there. Time for Isles to get back to work before great effort gets away.

  147. avatar Ethan K says:

Is the Vancouver Canucks’ goal song really Green Day???

    I’d prefer Nickelback.

  148. avatar steve says:

I know if I go to sleep, I’m going to wake up to another blown lead in the 3rd.

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round…

  149. avatar Big Dog says:

i guess no limit on posts tonight woohoo

  150. avatar Captain Crunch says:

Holy crap. Another one off the beak for Roli.

  151. Coulson hahaha…way to go Matt Moulson!!
Sick pass by JT, who I love watching right now.
Where did Bergie disappear to again…non-factor.
I kind of have a fixation with Ryan Kesler…awesome player.

    Great hit by Streit!

  152. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Great save for Rolo! Even before goal I was concerned Van might get to soem of these rebounds

  153. avatar Brother Rat says:

Hot damn, JT’s first 3-point game! I hope the boys aren’t setting us up for a disasterous second-half collapse. I predict another nailbiting finish, no matter how many points JT puts up. Yikes.

  154. avatar Brian H says:

@steve a west coast nightmare, eh? I keep seeing the van shot total go up and the isles sputter.. they need to pick it up and turn some of those steel posts into golden goals.

  155. avatar admin says:

    Burrows. 3-2.

  156. avatar Isles 420 says:

    (RIPS HIS HIAR OUT)

  157. avatar Captain Crunch says:

Good grief. This blows. At least the RSN feed showed a celebrating Canuck juggy for a second or two.

  158. avatar Isles 420 says:

    hair sorry

  159. avatar steve says:

Oh well, at least JT had a good game.

Introducing the 2010 NY Islanders, where the 3 goal lead means they’ve got us right where they want us.

  160. avatar M Howard says:

This is why we are far from a dominant team.

  161. avatar 2Bit says:

    cue the 3 goal meltdown.

It’s ok Gordo. You don’t have to call a timeout the period is almost over. riiiiiiight

  162. avatar dedshark says:

    YEA BABY JT AGAIN!!!!

  163. avatar steve says:

    John Tavares>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  164. avatar Isles 420 says:

i wish i didnt rip my hair out now

  165. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

    Tavares!!!!!

  166. avatar admin says:

    4-2. Tavares off Myers’ body.

  167. avatar Danbury Islanders Fan says:

    JT is breaking out tonight

  168. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Wow. What a rush! JT in the midle of it again!

  169. avatar 2Bit says:

glad i was wrong. Go Johnny T!!

  170. avatar Isles 420 says:

    4 points tonight wtf!!!!!!!!11

  171. avatar Big Dog says:

    omg

  172. avatar M Howard says:

    is JT possessed?

  173. avatar Mike says:

    has gillies played a shift??

  174. avatar Original Rob says:

Woooo!!! Glad I’m staying up for this one.. 4 points JT!

  175. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Tavares looking what we want him to be for the next 15 years tonight…

  176. avatar 7thWoman says:

i am so glad I stayed up for this!

  177. avatar Islesphan25 says:

CB….I hope you will have a nice write up about JT tonite…Win or Lose…

  178. avatar Doug says:

Gotta love JT right now. Anybody who says confidence doesn’t mean anything on the ice is out of their mind.

  179. avatar Ethan K says:

Ohhhhh, NOW I remember why I went to John Tavares’ draft party in the pouring rain with 10000 others and screamed my face off.

  180. avatar Patrick says:

JT looks like a man possessed. Trying to pick up the slack for KO

  181. avatar Islesfan is Vancouver says:

I’m having a blast here tonight. The Canucks fans sitting around me don’t like me much

  182. avatar Strummer's Army says:

As a life long JT supporter I’d like to say the bandwagon is getting pretty full.

Also want to point out big dumb Roberto Loungo has been beaten for 4 goals and at least 3 post in 2 periods. He’s on an extremely talented team too. No problem with the Isles trading him but huge problem with them trading him for Parrish and Kvasha.

I’ve got a job interview tomorrow so I’m going to bed. Go Isles!

  183. avatar Big Dog says:

    offensive zone = possesed (sp)
    defensive zone = passive

cmon guys win one for the gipper

  184. avatar StevieL says:

All that keying Vancouver is doing on Tamby is really creating space for JT! :)
Ladies and Gentleman, introducing the real John Tavares!

  185. avatar Isles8 says:

Moulson definately sent the message that he was upset during that interview, that reporter should have a fun day in the office tomorrow morning.

  186. avatar dan says:

When was the last time an Islander player got 4 points in 1 game?

JT is the man and garth has a plan :)

  187. avatar Big Dog says:

Get Matty signed and i so would get a Coulson jersey!!

  188. avatar 1972 means i'm old says:

    Tavares. Beautiful. And Moulson.

Is there a hockey voice smoother than Jiggs’? The call on the Islanders’ third goal was velvet.

Anyone remember who Jiggs was paired with in the old days? Also, Ed Giacoman was an Islander TVcaster during their second season. Anyone remember who he paired with?—was it Bill Mazer?

  189. avatar isles316 says:

I just hope the Isles win this so we can once again stick it to the Vancouver media who thinks we suck. Great job JT.

  190. avatar StevieL says:

#187 uhh…you forgot about Eddie Westfall?

  191. avatar VinnyMoose says:

The campaign to resign FMIV aka FREDDY THE WARRIOR MEYER starts here, people.

  192. avatar tom says:

tavares is on the weight gainer finally i think

  193. avatar isles316 says:

This Isles team is easy to root for. They play for each other and I’m fired up tonight, have to admit.

  194. avatar Big Dog says:

    192
i had jiggs call on voleks goal against pitt for so long back in the day

its been so long i rethink was it volek.. yikes am i that old or getting alzhiemers

  195. avatar Isles 420 says:

i dont care what people say about scott gorden’s system. to me it seems like a development system. the harder you work the better it pays off in the end.

  196. avatar BC says:

CB could I ask you a question. While I love how Tavares has done this year for us, do you think from the time he came on the map in juniors his stock has dropped? I mean he entered the OHL a year early, something not even a guy like Crosby was allowed to do, and he broke Gretzky’s scoring record for a 16 year old in juniors. However, now in his rookie year in the NHL, he is seen as a future all-star, but not a generational talent. Is it just how he seemed to pan out, or do experts think where he stands among hockey players has gone down in the past 4-5 years?

Either way, glad to see him with a big night tonight!!!

  197. Freddy the Warrior!?!? Hahaha I love it! I’m using that from now on.

    I miss Schremp.
These games are crazy though…its line win-win. We win I’m happy, we lose I’m…willing to accept.

  198. avatar TuxTax says:

    Luongo OUT!!!

  199. avatar HubieMac39 says:

    Luongo’s not a machine, he’s a man!

  201. avatar Jim M says:

Bobby Lou riding the pine pony

  202. avatar 7thWoman says:

Wait, didn’t I call for them to chase Luongo from his net? Damn! Why can’t I call for the freakin’ lotto numbers?

  203. Haha bye bye Roberto! I agree with Strummer’s comments too. I never liked Luongo, still don’t. But damn, I hate Kvasha and didn’t think much of Parrish.

  204. avatar battfist says:

    Here’s a Guinness to JT.

    Cheers.

  205. avatar Brian H says:

    Luongo is no Coulson.

  206. avatar Captain Crunch says:

How in the name of Hell did Ehrhoff not get called for a penalty? Bailey was about to shoot and presto-chango, the net is gone. WTF???

  207. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Vancouver also bring up awful memories of the Linden for McCabe and Bertuzzi trade

  208. avatar Frans Dish says:

I didn’t know you could lift the net off its mournings when someone is about to score, I should try that more when I play

  209. avatar Devon says:

Wow, what a screw job. Send in Martin to get retribution on Erhoff…oh wait.

  210. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Isles should just start moving net off pegs. Refs keep letting Van get away with it

  211. avatar Staten Islander says:

Has Gillies gotten any ice time tonight?

  212. avatar 7thWoman says:

  213. avatar 2Bit says:

I like Bailey, but it seems like he’s forgetting to shoot the puck again. Time to be selfish & take the shots Josh.

  214. avatar dedshark says:

JB was about to shoot as raycroft was down but your apparently able to move the net off the pegs anytime u want.

  215. avatar Turgeiton says:

let me refrain..all of the people who have doubted tavares can calm down. i have been saying all year he is 19!!!! he will be fine everyone relax.
sorry but not many players can get 4 points in an nhl game, let alone through 2 periods and be only 19!!!! come on fellas join back on the jt bandwagon
btw can’t we get back jiggs full time…he brings back so many memories. jiggs is islander hockey and they play well when he announces…coincidence? i think not…

  216. avatar mtrico says:

Vancouver seems to be controlling the play this period. This could be another “fantastic finish” for the Isles.

  217. avatar admin says:

Still 4-2 Islanders with 12 minutes left in the third. Bailey just hit the crossbar on the breakaway.

  218. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

JB shot the puck a little on that shift!

  219. avatar Staten Islander says:

    CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

  220. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Well at least Bailey is shooting now.

  221. avatar Isles 420 says:

    BAILEYYYYY!!!!!

  222. avatar mtrico says:

Bailey with another great chance, and another post. Well, actually the crossbar.

  223. avatar Isles 420 says:

wait i thought it was a goal

  224. avatar Brian H says:

add the bars and we would be winning 8-2!

  225. avatar Isles 420 says:

    posted too soon

  226. avatar Big Dog says:

I know cb talked about streit but man this guy has such poise with the puck

  227. avatar Matt S says:

Jiggs is having a blast tonight! Laughing his butt of in the booth. Good for him.

  228. avatar HubieMac39 says:

  229. avatar James says:

    no pun intended 420 lol

  230. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

JT and Bailey have really stepped up their game without KO in there.

  231. avatar Staten Islander says:

I miss Jiggs. When the words “Potvin” “Trottier” “Bossy” etc go thru my head, I hear them in Jiggs’s voice

  232. avatar Gary says:

    JT with 4 points….Jiggs at microphone….Bobby LU pulled from game….looking good…

  233. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Best game Isles have played since MLK Day v Devils. Need to be smart for next 6 min to finish it off.

  234. avatar Big Dog says:

    this game is very exciting..

  235. avatar 2Bit says:

hahaha of course JB gets some chances to shoot the puck after i post about him not shooting. Love it!! When I posted though he had some clear shots from the point that he didn’t take & elected to pass cross ice. He’s definitely looking good though.

  236. avatar Brian H says:

quick 2bit, mention Streit not shooting!

  237. avatar M Howard says:

Who sits when Okposo returns? Tamby? Bergy?

  238. avatar Brian says:

I would still like to have Matt Martin and Jesse Joensuu up over a few guys we have in the lineup now but what could you do.

Dwayne Roloson is awesome and Matt Moulson has to be one of the best signings from last summer.

  239. avatar Matt S says:

Jiggs and Eddie! They were household names way back when.

  240. avatar M Howard says:

    Gillies?

  241. avatar Brett in the Cleve says:

    Take a bow John Tavares

  246. avatar Bryan says:

Let’s get him a hat trick!

  247. avatar 2Bit says:

Tavares def deserved that empty net! His best game all season probably.

  253. avatar Original Rob says:

Gordon: Show some real snazz and put JT on for the remainder for a chance at 6 with 51 seconds left!!

  254. avatar 2Bit says:

I am convinced that if Roloson’s time didn’t get broken up when D.P was making his comeback we’d be in the playoffs right now.

  255. avatar dedshark says:

jaffe omg hahah…its garbage but anyway islanders win, no islanders DOMINATE haha

  256. avatar Big Dog says:

    cb
    thats a great win

  257. avatar gary says:

    wow. JT what a game.
Maybe the start of something big….

  258. avatar Danbury Islanders Fan says:

I think it is a great sign that JT scores 5 points the same night the Vancouver media questions the Islanders talent.

  259. avatar StevieL says:

Great, great game! JT , Moulson, Meyer were as awesome as Jiggs and Jaffee in the booth. We should bottle this one! Happy St. Patty’s day to all!!

  260. avatar Big Dog says:

    2bit

i stand with you on that
    sorry rickeee…
this team wouldve rode him to playoffs and truth be told we wouldnt be talking 8 or 7 spot..

  261. avatar JerseyIslander says:

A winning streak, a road win, and a 5 point JT night… added bonus of Reese scoring his first NHL goal… I’m pretty stoked! I agree with you 2bit (#254)… Rolly’s time should have never been interrupted.

  262. avatar HubieMac39 says:

Excellent all around Isles performance. Hopefully this is the glimpse of the future JT. The extra coffee needed tomorrow will taste that much better. Night all. Keep up the great work CB!

  263. avatar Jeff says:

    To: JT

    Thank you!!!

  264. avatar dan says:

Alexei Yashin on march 20th 2003 was the last islander to get 5 points in a game. WOW. been a long time

  265. avatar eric nystrom says:

Great win!! Perfect night with Jiggs calling the game instead of Howie and JT scoring 5pts.. Is it coincidence that the team plays tons better without Ricky in the locker room? There is no doubt that Ricky is a cancer just as Blake was a few years back..

  266. avatar Islefan in NJ says:

Really nice game in which everyone contributed. There was not one weak link. Great to see them shut down another powerhouse.

  267. avatar Diane says:

That was a feel good game for all, so glad I stayed up for it! Regardless of score or standings, that was the type of game you enjoy watching every time.

  268. avatar 2Bit says:

While I’d agree it wasn’t the MOST impressive 5 point performance two of those points came on beautiful passes. The important thing to consider is JT played his heart out this game & when you do that you get some lucky bounces. Hopefully this does wonders for his confidence & gets him on the scoreboard more often than he has been the past few months.

  269. avatar James says:

All pluses all the way around tonight

Only negative is I have been sitting JT a lot lately in fantasy hockey and he was not in my lineup tonight lol

  270. avatar Big Dog says:

this team is good and was good when dipi started, problem is rolo was winning games and on fire… pr bs to get rickee in the mix ruined this season..

i dont care if anyone has an alliance but that stunt may cost us playoffs.

rolo is what we needed all season not some kid trying to prove i can play and im better

he couldve done for us what he did for the oilers.

  271. avatar Bill says:

is it worth signing freddy IV next year as a extra d man? guy plays hard…i know hes little but he tries to play big…leads the team in hits!

  272. avatar Dave says:

DP far far away, Howie Rose far far away,Gordon keeps Moulson w/Tavares = Win, too bad DP had to come back and ruin everything again, otherwise Roloson has Isles in the playoffs right now.

  273. avatar MattyB says:

Freddy IV shouldn’t be an extra D man next year, he should be a flat out dman….Gervais gone, Myer in…

  274. avatar jimmy says:

i hate getting these points that mean nothing and taking ourselves out of a chance at a top 3 pick!! thats what we really need!! please lose every game! thank you, its the least you could do for us

  275. avatar MattyB says:

You can’t be a real fan if you really deep down want your team to lose. I say I want them to lose all the time. But I’m a fan of this team, and love seeing them win, especially when they shouldn’t be on the same ice as vancouver…Yea right

  276. avatar MJS says:

Bahahahahaha!!!!!!! I wish that Vancouver paper would follow the Isles around and predict that they would lose every game. They’d probably win the President’s Trophy. Indeed they did that for the reads and to get the Islanders fans all stirred up, but what a bunch of clown shoes anyway. Big win.

Also, I’m glad that Johnny Tavs had a big night. His game definitely is best within 20 feet of the net, and of his five points I think maybe 2 of them happened more than 20 feet away. It was great to see what happens when he drives the net. With a little extra muscle he should be pretty awesome next season.

  277. avatar htiy says:

the isles management in particular wangs insistance to play dipietro cost us the playoffs this season as well as their inability to sign a quality d man or 2 bottom line

  278. avatar rob76 says:

i am one of the guys who if we aren’t going to make the playoffs wants some losses for a top 3 pick. But if you were watching this game it was impossible not to smile and get excited. Tonight this is about JT and a solid road win – it this win costs us a top3 pick we will worry about it in June.

  279. avatar jimmy says:

then you dont wanna be a top team for years to come right?? we have gone thru so much losing over the years what a few more when we could add another superstar maybe?? you have to be kidding me?? yes we have some good young players but we need more high end talent!! your a real fan but do u really know hockey?? no bif ufa will sign here take up we have to build it ourselves!! we need another top 3 pick.. then i dont want to lose anymore.. ive watched almost every game the last 20 years, u could say im a fan

  280. avatar James says:

wait wait, I wasnt aware that this was game 82, cost us the playoffs?

I dont think we are out of this by any means yet, sure it will be tough, but lets not forget what the Isles did a few years back. They had to win their final 4 games just to sneak in the playoffs and they did it with a backup goalie in net.

Until game 82 is said and done with, this team still has a shot to get in. You want to root for draft picks, go root for Toronto or Edmonton

  281. avatar hd says:

271 has the right idea. it looks like freddy has stepped it up in the past month, while bruno has been going the wrong way.
i think Meyer would be great for next year. There is still a chance at playoffs but if they rolled ROLI we wouldnt have to even think about it.

  282. avatar Examiner says:

My favorite shift, aside from every JT point, was at the midpoint of the 3rd period. Blake Comeau using the body twice on Tanner Glass. His complete game is really emerging.

  283. avatar James says:

ok jimmy, 1st off we can increase our draft position as much as 3 spots in the draft this June

so we could finish with the 8th worst record and then end up at #5

Also none of these guys in the draft have played 1 game in the NHL, so how do we know who is a “high end talent” now?

Look at who Detroit drafted to become what they did. Guys like Datsyuk and Zetterburg were late round picks, not #1 picks. That MacLeod kid in Colorado was a 2nd round choice. There have also been a share of busts in the draft too.

To play for draft position is just stupid IMO

  284. avatar MattyB says:

First of all, easy on the superstar…Hall is not going to be an Islander. And Seguin is going two, We’re not that bad that we are going to get the 2nd pick either. Cam Fowler is not a superstart. They are prospects, might never be superstars…Nd no I’m fine rooting for my team to beat a first place Western Confernace team. One pick isn’t giving us a cup. We took Tavares, a 3 year old could have made that pick….They’ll prob trade down from the fourth pick and take a goalie anyway.

  285. avatar Islesfan is Vancouver says:

The isles come to Vancouver every 2 years. For me, this was the best present I could have had. Loved it

  286. avatar iceman from quesnel bc says:

I can’t believe I didn’t go. After spending all my fun money on the Olympics, I decided not to make the 8 hour trip. Saved on a big hangover though!!!

  287. avatar James says:

One last point cuz I have posted too much

To me the experience these kids are getting right now to fight for a playoff spot and play meaningful games in March is much more beneficial for the future of this franchise than it would be to tank the season for another high draft pick.

  288. avatar Islesfan In Vancouver says:

iceman! do they still have Billy Barker days in Quesnel?

  289. avatar Ryan says:

Was at the game. Isles fans in force. JT with a high five. Beauty!

  290. avatar isles316 says:

I was at the Olympics Islesfan in Vancouver. What a class city. I had my Isles jersey on for a couple days and people seemed to be excited that they saw a real life Isles fan. Tonight, they seem like we shouldn’t exsist

  291. avatar BillyBC says:

Long Islander living in Vancouver for the last 2 years, and I tell you what I am sick and tired of the BC media disrespecting the Islanders over and over again. I am calling their moronic morning sports show (which is a complete embarrassment) and letting them know they should watch what they say. CB you are correct the Vancouver Province is HORRIBLE! They charge 1.75 for their paper which is a complete waste of paper. The canucks will never win anything…EVER. Call Luongo’s mother, he needs his diaper changed

  292. avatar iceman from quesnel bc says:

Islesfan, sure do in the middle of July1

  293. avatar anthony c says:

#280, toronto doesn’t have a 1st round draft pick this year. It went to boston as part of the phil kessel deal. So where ever toronto finishes will determine where boston will pick in the top 5. Plus boston could still end up picking in the top 10 if they miss the playoffs. So I am kinda hoping toronto goes on a hot streak just so the bruins don’t get higher then 4th or 5th overall. Besides, Hall is most likely not gonna be an islander unfortunately since edmonton is locked at 1st overall with the worst record (Aside from some injuries I think they have been mailing it in since the mid point of the season). So I just hope we can get either 2nd or 3rd overall since I think we are just one top 3 pick and maybe one or two top 10 picks away from making this rebuild complete. We got some good prospects in bridgeport and over seas (Petrov) that we will have a good look at next year and could possibly be in the opening night roster in october. Plus Tavares will be bulked up, and will be more comfortable as well as bailey and okposo improving. And we can’t forget about the gem we found in moulson (hopefully won’t have to much pressure on his shoulders next year). Next season will be our playoff push, and the 1st step to getting back to the promise land.

  294. avatar Kevin says:

Correction on #283. The Isles/Any team can move up 4 Draft Positions by winning the Lottery. From 8th to 4th.. Not to mention Hall is not guaranteed the #1 spot. About 20% of the Scouts have Seguin #1. Also Red Line Report has Nino Niederreiter ranked #3, ahead of Fowler. El Nino is in his 1st WHL season and leads his team w/ 36 Goals in 65 games. I personally would rank Niederreiter ahead of Hall. He certainly outplayed Hall at the WJC & will be a lock to play in the NHL next year.

  295. avatar Ugly Roe From Massapequa says:

    1. Even after a 5-point night, Tavares is trailing Duschene in the rookie scoring by three goals and by six points. I still think we got the shorter end of that stick.

2.Kudos to Coach Gordon, who obviously was able to keep his team focused during the break.

    3. Now I see why Milbury traded Luongo.

  296. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Sorry couldn’t watch the game last night … I have farmers hours … I wake up the fricken roosters….

Anyway … looked like JT had an outstanding night … maybe he’s going to shake off the mid season slump as Stamkos did his early season slump last year …

Play loose JT … enjoy yourself … points will come.
    ***
On another point … I’m afraid after seeing this season … that the Isles need much more help and young skilled talent. I think they need a top 3 pick, just as the new young power houses … like Caps, Pens and Hawks have acquired … by having a few horrid seasons with top picks as a reward.

  297. avatar Frank nyc says:

First of all no one can say that this team hasnt made progress. We now have 3 young players that have broken the 40pt mark. We had no forwards who did that last yr. We also have 2 guys who have broken the 20 goal mark, we had none last year. Almost all of our young players have improved o their point totals from last year. No matter what happens for the rest of this season it was a success. Next year with more experience for these young guys and a few more pieces, this team will make another significant jump. GO ISLES.
O and wow JT had his hand in every goal v.s. Vancouver. Best game yet from the rookie. He was everywhere last night.

  298. avatar Jersey Steve says:

What a game by JT! He definitely needed that. Personally, I’d rather the Isles get the 8th seed over a better draft pick but I know the chances are slim.

  299. avatar Vealchop says:

    What the H?

Not that I am unhappy about last nights performamce but it doesnt help the NYI.

    Wins dont help.

This is why I was not impressed with Garth at the deadline. He could of got a 2nd rder for Rolosson and NYI would of had a top 3 pick.

Now NYI will probably end up with the 6th pick and no extra 2nd rder b/c of Rolie’s play in goal.

    Grrr…..

  300. avatar RD says:

MM30, or post #8, you don’t want Mitchell. They said on the telecast last night that he is having a real difficult time recovering from a severe concussion. You may want to take him off your wish list.

I have been pleased with JT all year. He had rough stretch at one point but the guy does make things happen. Many times his plays aren’t finished. My only criticism of JT is that he gets knock down to the ice too much. That is it.

Speaking of JT, what the hell got into him last night! I think may have seen a preview of things to come from our young star! Can’t wait to see what he does in Anaheim Friday.

We have beat 2 teams since the Olympic break that are cup contenders! Impressive! Our top 5 pick may be turn into a top 10 pick.

  301. avatar sol says:

We need a top pick, wins do not help now.
    But, they played great.

  302. avatar Lorne Myers says:

We are not getting the 1st overall pick, not this year. At least we are playing respectible hockey. It may be too little too late to make the playoffs. However, you never know. We keep this up, so long top 5 pick.

  303. avatar Steve says:

We need defenseman anyway, so I’m not too worried about picking in the 4-7 range. That’s where the d men are in this draft. We just need to lose enough to stay in that range.

  304. avatar Hollywood says:

Great all around effort. Kudos to Gordon for playing Tamby with JT and on the PP. I thought Tamby played very well. They played inspired and looked like a team that wants to make that final push at the final playoff spot. Bergenheim was also relentless, he finished every check!

  305. avatar Sheppy says:

We need some top-flight talent at forward. We have D prospects coming up, but really no forwards to speak of. Sure, one could name Petrov (possibly) and Joensuu. Who else of note is in the pipeline? Rhakshani? I see him as more of a borderline 2nd or 3rd liner. Who else? Martin? I LOVE the guy, but he is more of a banger. That is why we need a forward and we might be playing our way out of a top pick for a forward (days ago it looked like Seguin might fall into our laps). True, we need D, too, but we actually have some D prospects (Hamonic, de Haan, Niemi, Kessel, Donovan, Ness…not mention guys like McDonald, Kohn and possibly even Katic and Reese). I have heard this song before…we will win just enough to miss out on the top flight talent, but not enough to make the playoffs. Even then, how would a Washington/Islanders series end even if we were to make the playoffs? Does anyone think we’d win more than one game if that?!?! The time is now…to get another top pick. Then, we can work towards building something next year with a couple of free agents. That is where we can replenish our D (Hamhuis, Volchenchov, etc.) if we are willing to ante up (oh yeah, I forgot we were talking about the Islanders here). The one player who I think would be there at like 6-7 who I would really want on D is Gudbrandson!

  306. avatar Marc says:

Tavares played like a man possessed last night. Nice to see him play a complete game on both ends and for his passes converted. Stats are deceiving as for a good portion of the season, he was making plays that weren’t converted by his linemates. He also missed his own opportunities more often than he is accustomed to.

In the perfect world, the Isles’ win only one or two games the rest of the way — including next Wednesday’s tilt against the Rag$ — to help keep them out of the playoffs.
