ISLANDERS 4 MAPLE LEAFS 1
Damage done…add Comeau to core…Plus/Minus

by admin on March 14th, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Chris Botta on Twitter

7:35 pm, NVMC: No matter where you stand on the Lighthouse Project, almost everyone agrees the Islanders could use a new or completely transformed arena. Hurricane winds wrecked havoc all over Long Island yesterday, including some wreckage of the old barn on Hempstead Turnpike.

Turns out the Millsteins were just a decade ahead of their time. The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum really is falling apart.

Three large sections of the aluminum upper facade of the arena came crumbling down on Saturday around 5:30 pm. Although fans were starting to line up before the Islanders’ game against the Devils, somewhat miraculously no one got hurt. The only inconvenience was some traffic when the main area of the box office had to be closed.

Two of the pieces of broken barn were 2 x 18, the other 12 x 12.

Of course, you can drive to many places on Long Island to witness serious damage. I recommend Capitolian Blvd. in Rockville Centre for an awesome sight of a large tree lifted out of the ground and lying across the length of the block (no one got hurt). You can also check out the front porch of the home I thought my family was moving into this summer.

But in case there was any doubt, the Islanders need a new home. It’s dangerous out there.

*

Plus: Bruins management may have loved this result for draft pick purposes, but the Islanders pull to within seven points of eighth place Boston for the final playoff berth in the East. Although the Islanders haven’t won on the road in two months, a not-unreasonable-to-expect four points on this three-game Western swing keeps them in the race.

Plus: It took some growing pains, but Blake Comeau (first three-assist NHL game) can be added to the list of keepers on the core of forwards in this rebuild. Lest anyone forgot, Comeau has a pretty good pedigree. He is 6-6-12 in his last eight games.

Plus: The rest of the confirmed list as of this date: John Tavares, Josh Bailey, Kyle Okposo, Frans Nielsen, Matt Moulson. Yes, nucleuses (nuclei?) can include effective third-liners like Comeau. And yep, the team needs some size.

Plus: Freddy Meyer is the perfect example of an excellent role player who is sometimes disrespected when he’s playing on a losing team. With his attitude and play, he’s a perfect 6-7 defenseman for the Islanders. No reason not to keep him around.

Plus: Matt Martin, even on an emergency recall, demonstrates how to be a good teammate.

Plus: On back-to-back games, in nasty weather, for a team barely in the playoff race, the fans came out in good numbers. That’s the definition of a strong fanbase.

Plus: Dennis LaRue with the kind of heads-up intelligent penalty call you don’t always see when Nikolai Kulemin attempted to disguise a pick-and-roll. Referees get a lot of carp, often for good reason, but smart work deserves to be applauded.

Plus: Tim Jackman is unable to fight, Dion Phaneuf wasn’t going to fight. The best the Islanders could do is make Phaneuf have to keep his head up for the entire game, know he was marked, and understand the Islanders would not forget what he did to Kyle Okposo. On all levels, the Islanders succeeded.

Plus: Recent adjustments to the penalty kill have paid off. (We’ll save the needle about yet another too-many-men penalty for a different day). Coming into the weekend, the Islanders had given up eight power play goals in their last six games. They were 11-for-11 in these two games with a pair of shorthanded goals.

Plus: By raising some ticket prices and asking season subscribers to pay by April 1, by raising the cost of parking closer to major league levels, some enticing signs are there. The Islanders have every intention of spending some money (some from the Andy Sutton savings), getting out of 26th-30th-28th place and taking the next step. As much as it has been a brutal last two months in the Country, the Islanders are in position to compete next season. Should be an exciting summer.

Damage done…add Comeau to core…Plus/Minus

  1. avatar James says:

    Great effort

Plus – Comeau has been incredible lately; yes add him to the core

Plus – Neilsen is just so impressive; he and Okposo are the two best two-way players we have. Very impressed with him

Plus – Park scores a goal lol

Plus – Moulsons’ 25th, who would have thought of that at the beginning of the season.

Plus – Solid Goaltending from both Rollie and Marty

Plus – 5 points in 3 games for the Isles, who knows if they can keep it going, but it is clear this team is much better than last years’ team.

Minus – The number of minuses we will see from the people who think the winning will cost us a top 5 pick.

  2. avatar The New Isles GM says:

If we are going to admit to the public that we can compete for a playoff spot next year, the only damage done today was keeping Toronto(boston) behind us in the standings. Forget about the Coliseum falling apart, we need a top 2 pick. I don’t want to get stuck with Fowler. I’d rather have the choice of Fowler or Seguin. If Garth has that, we’ll probably go with Seguin. His playmaking skills is just another asset to help make guys like Okposo and Tavares find the back of the net more. We can always bring back Sutton and maybe sign Volchenkov. Come on Gordon, coach your way to 2nd to last place.

  3. avatar bryan says:

Dipietro was gone for the 4 game losing streak they were on before this, he has nothing to do with any of this.

Plus- Biron being a true professional and not sulking
Plus- Answering the bell when the game got physical.
Minus- The team needs to find a way stop the inconsistent play, they have had long winning streaks, followed by just as long losing streaks

  4. avatar MattyB says:

Agreed. This has absolutely nothing to do for this. Nd turning it around. It’s two games, lets relax.

However, well played game. Nice to see Martin hit Deon in the back, would have been nice if he didn’t get up. Also a great game by Comeau and Meyer.

  5. avatar beachchica says:

I realize that Biron had a tough start to the season, but I really like this guy! Team player, team leader and all around good guy. Wish he could stick around!!

  6. avatar the1gwiz says:

Plus – Comeau-Nielsen-Sim really clicking as a unit

Minus- Another too many men, but this time was less “brain dead” as Martin was overzealous in seeing a chance to make a play.

Plus- Martin ringing Phaneufbag’s bell early

Plus- Biron in his postgame interview on right now. This guy looooves to talk.

Plus- Tavares has clearly been better both on and off the puck since the break.

Plus- Really liking how Meyer is taking it upon himself to bring the physical element.

  7. avatar Jersey Steve says:

I haven’t had power for over 24 hours but it was nice to get it just in time to watch the Isles win.

  8. avatar BrooklynGene says:

Keep Matt Martin on the roster!

  9. avatar Jack1NJ says:

So disappointed In Okposo, not only did he not challenge Phaneuf—he didnt even try to hit him.

Okposo is looking very soft, those comparisions to Iggy in Calgary are looking to be way off base for Okposo. He also cant finish like him and his hockey sense imo is lacking.

I no longer see Okposo as captain material or somebody that can be a major player in a team turnaround. He looks to be a supporting 2nd line player in my book.

Very disappointed in Him and tavares, they will not be the guys that take this team to the next level.

This is why getting Seguin or Hall this year was very important, both those players can be franchise players.

With this win, we probably killed any chance , besides winning the lottery to get one of them. That is unfortunate, because the Islanders will have a tough time turning around without a true star.

I do see some good supporting players here now, but we do not have a first line or franchise star that can make a difference.

  10. avatar mrlbem says:

Chris–what is the basis for the last “Plus?” In other words, how do you know? I’d love to be confident that it’s not going to be business as usual.

  11. avatar peter puck says:

Thought Planeuf was a big bad dude. What happens when the first time he gets hit hard he runs away crying into a corner and has someone else clean up for him. And that goes pretty much for the rest of the Leafs.
And the way they are going they are going to finish up in last place without a first round pick.

  12. avatar Shremp Co 13 says:

I’d add Shremp to that Nucleus core. (Bailey/Okposo/Tavares/Neilsen/Petrov/Comeau/Shremp/
Moulson/Bergenheim/Martin/This years #1 (hopefully Seguin or Conolly). Any with the salary to acquire a top 6 fwd this summer or even 2 our offense is set.

  13. avatar justin says:

Adding some toughness with skill to the lineup makes for a different look Isles. Cudos to Martin for making Planeufs night a bit more difficult, he wasn’t the same player all night after being hit. Great passes to JT and Park also forscoring chances, theres more to this kid than we have even seen. Every one plays a bit bigger when ya got some grit on your side.

  14. avatar SneakyPete77 says:

Very happy with the young talent. Have been all year. Nice to see Comeau break out like Okposo did last year. The stats are not bad for a team kids mostly 25 and under.

As for Tavares, he makes a lot of great passes that never seem to be finished. The kid has had some bad luck. Still think he is going to be a great player. The fact that he is a 19 year old kid that has not even filled out physically yet is an important point.

Ive read a few negative posts by some Islander fans about Tavares. Keep this in mind. We all know what a great player Eric Staal is for the Hurricanes. In his rookie year, he went 11-20-31 in 81 games. He was a 19 too. JT is going to be just fine. Hope you reach 20 goals, JT!

Anyone who knows JT, knows he will work harder than anyone on the team this summer to improve othe facets of his game.

  15. avatar Eric says:

minus: 12,804 (78.6% full) is not a good crowd on a weekend anyway you cut it. Having only 6,000 season ticket holders does not help the cause of course.

Plus: I have been behind Comeau for a long time now. Always felt he should have been out there when he was being benched. This guy will be a solid 3rd liner or a top 6 forward. Either way, Im glad we have him. He will score a big playoff goal down the road.

Plus: Tavares looked good today even though he did not register a point. He’s in the mix and still looks a lot better than Bailey did last season so with a bailey like summer I dont see why Tavares cant be a solid player for the Islanders next season.

Minus: Okposo has to work on his offensive game. He needs to start burying more chances.

  16. avatar Jason says:

    We need Matt Martin..

  17. avatar admin says:

Matt Martin is not flying with the Islanders tonight for their West Coast trip. He is returning to Bridgeport…CB

  18. avatar Dave says:

Martin plays the way we are TOLD this team is going to play yet he plays well & has impact, then he gets sent down, why is that?

  19. avatar dose says:

the comeau – bailey – moulson play might be a snapshot of the future. and they won’t even be first-liners. not bad.
get big, tough and quick backliners i say!
hearing the g.m. acknowledge he’d “like to add a couple of defensemen” was by far the best thing in that interview the other night.

  20. avatar Dave says:

Snow has “said” alot of things a million times already, so saying hed like to add a couple of dmen, etc, and actually going out and doing it are far different things.

  21. avatar Madchef says:

I love Martin, standing up for the team dropping gloves with a smile. IMO he is a bit raw, maybe that is the reason for sending him down, unless its a money thing with the 9 games? Anyway whatever happpens down the stretch give credit to this team as they are better than last year. Anybody else agree that they wouldn’t mind seeing rollie and biron next year as our netminders. Sorry DP, please retire, leave, something, anything.

  22. avatar eastonhockey says:

I’m sorry…but the Islanders are not in a playoff race. C’mon the odds of the Isles winning 75% of the rest of the schedule is Zero. WHen the isles sign a Willie Mitchel type of free agent..remember one thing..its to get to the salary cap floor..so that they can be in the NHL. If a team doesnt at least get the the salary cap floor they arent allowed to play in games.

  23. avatar goislesgo105 says:

How can this team look so good like they did today against the Leafs after going 3-12???? I really hope that this team is ready to take the next step next year and have a real chance to be a competitive playoff team but I’ve been burned for so many years that I will believe it when I see it. GO ISLES!!

  24. avatar POPCORN IN THE HOOD says:

If this team spends money in the summer, a top 10 pick is fine….but if they do what they always do and mess up in the summer and do not attract anyone here, we must find ways to lose the last of our remaining games so we get that top 3 pick.

  25. avatar isles316 says:

The scene at the Coliseum for last night’s game was nuts on the way in. I thought I had missed something on the weather report and it literally was a hurricane. Glad no one got hurt.

Plus: The Isles seem to be headed back to the style of play that saw them go 10-3-2 back in January.
Even: The Rick Dipietro/3 goalie debate seems to have some legs. The Isles have been better when he hasn’t been around.
Plus: Blake Comeau, Freddy Meyer, Tim Jackman

  26. avatar Ben says:

Well, pleasantly surprised in picking up 5 of six points. I had them pegged for 1 point, 2 tops. Nice job.

Can we keep it rolling out west??????? We have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Stop the penalties for gosh sakes. Loved when they played keep-away near the end of the 3rd when a man down. Toronto looked beat!

Nice job guys and good luck on the road trip.

  27. avatar The Pork Chop Express says:

+Comeau- continues to be the best all around player on the ice. It was unfortunate that he was benched for the first half. He had solid last stretch at the end of last year.
+ Meyer not sure where he is in the isles future plans but he is their most physical dman and hits bigger then his size. he should be resigned and not be benched like the first half.
    +moulson another goal.
    - KO still missing. I am not sure if he is putting too much pressure on himself but lately he has been ineffective. I know he is young and young players are streaky but he needs to learn to handle the puck better. it jumps all over the place. Also, he needs to drive to the net more. During the winning streak he did not hesitate dropping the shoulder and make b line to the net. He should not be named captain. If weight does not come back then streit has earned the C.
-Tamby getting hurt. Somebody has voodoo doll with his name on it.
-Lost ground in the race for the top two draft picks. If you are not making the playoffs you might as well come in dead last. would love to see seguin on the team.

  28. avatar Doug F. says:

    CB,

I don’t know why they don’t want Martin next week. He does give them a physical presence that they don’t have. I agree that Comeau will be back next year. I believe he has one more year on his deal. So I would think he would stay. The player I think that could be traded is Hunter…

  29. avatar mLem says:

well played fellas…I’m excited about this team and the core we are building…it may only be 1 or 2 bricks at a time, but thats the right way to do it. A top 3 pick would be nice, a play off push would be just as nice. I am excited for this summer one way or the other…bring me some big name FAs…Ryan Kesler pleeeease
Also it was cool to hear Streit mic’d up, he’ll remain and excellent assistant when Kyle is given what he rightly deserves.
    Let’s Go ISLANDERS!!!

  30. avatar Frank nyc says:

Comeau has putting up some some numbers.
Over a full season he might have been one of our top scorers.
Either way good game. Also i do not care what happens the rest of the season. No matter what we are getting a top 10 pick and a very good player that will come from that pick.

  31. avatar Strummer's Army says:

    MINUS: SENDING MARTIN BACK DOWN.
Plus: Matt Martin. Add him to the core.
Minus: Neon Dion showing his true colors once again. He’s a cheap shot artist who’l only fight when he has an advantage but not against anyone tough. The one night I watched Jimmey Kimmel (never do) there was Dion’s hockey player loving GF talking about how she is scared for the guys Dion fights because he’s so strong. Haven’t seen it.
    Plus: Comeau’s improved play.
MINUS: Gordon’s stange use of enforcers. The guy still doesn’t have a handle on it. 1:33 seconds for Gillies? C’MON. We were all hoping for Gillies and Orr and Martin and Dion.
Minus: Anyone who is calculating the Isles playoff chances.
    Plus: Bergy’s improved play.
Minus: Guys who have no future with the club playing instead of Martin, JJ etc.
    Plus: Bailey, KO, Taveres.
Minus: NVMC, it is disgraceful. Seems like there is tons of money on LI. The building should have been replaced years and years ago. I have no idea why it has not.

  32. avatar john says:

as bad as the NVMC is, I love calling it my home. There is something about watching my first hockey game and my favorite team there. It will always be my favorite place to watch a hockey game.

  33. avatar Ray's Team says:

Prediction-isles get the 3rd pick in the draft and add NO free agents in the off season-and make NO trades..no hope

  34. avatar Viper says:

Meaningless wins does not a champion make. We need core players and that means a top 3 pick.

  35. avatar Jerky says:

Comeau has been impressive the past month or so, but he needs to keep up his performance for the remainder of the season for me to include him in the core in indelible ink. We’ve seen flashes like this before and then he fades to obscurity for 20-30 games. Time will tell.

Martin won’t be playing much with the team for the rest of the year. No need to lose year one of his contract this year – let him make the team out of training camp next season and be full-time from then on. Love the way the kid plays – 100% on every shift.

  36. avatar Examiner says:

Was so happy to get to the arena for warm ups and see #46 out there. Love this kid Martin! Understand sending him back down to the Bridge but want to see him up next season. He seems to be a very underrated passer to boot.

Great win and dont care about the draft standings. I just want to see these kids keep developing and getting stronger. I’ve seen this franchiseblose enough over the last 16 years, enough is enough.

  37. avatar Jason says:

You CAN NOT try to lose! Am I happy they won? As a fan, not particularly. But I’d rather see an effort than see them go out there and not try at all. Sure, I’d rather the goals come from Tavares, Okposo, and Bailey… but it just didn’t happen that way.

They’re coming up on a tough west coast swing. Fear not, they’ll get their losses. As for the draft; they’ll get a good prospect, and winning the lottery is not out of the question. They’ve done it before. Hall is who I want, but after that, it’s “Spin The Bottle” between Seguin, Fowler, and Gormley. They will probably be in position to select one of them. Yes, Fowler could fall to 4th. Right now, Carolina has a game in hand. Don’t worry draft fans, the Islanders will have a good pick, it just probably won’t be the first pick.

  38. avatar Jim M says:

PLUS: MATT MOULSON 25goals. 2 more than Malkin and 1 less than Kane and Backstrom.

  39. avatar Jim Clark says:

Leave the sign the way it is. Like the Charlestown Chiefs player who takes a sledgehammer to the team bus “to make it look mean”.

  40. avatar Hollywood says:

CB, not sure if Comeau is part of the “Core” but he has solidified himself with Neilson and Bergenheim as our 3rd line. Answer to the Okposo questions are the guy trys to get to fancy with the puck. He really doesn’t take a direct route to the net. He’s not like Iginla. Okposo still has much to learn about his game and should be the Captain of this team!

  41. avatar 4theisles says:

Odds of Isles making the playoffs – 8 to 1, odds of Isles making the playoffs with Sutton 5 to 1, Question, if you only agree with me that Sutton gives them a little hope, is the pickup of a high #2 pik worth it? Thats what Snow wrestled with when he made his decision – thats what he gets paid to do.

  42. avatar HeyNow!!! says:

PLUS: Matt Martin sticking up for KO but why didnt Phenuef go?

Plus: Blake Comeau can be really effective when hes playing right

Minus: JT playing hard but It bothers me that Duchene is above him at the moment…Im rooting for him hard

Even: KO all over the place but needs to start scoring goals…I think, at the very least, he should be a 30 goal guy…Im rooting very hard for him as well…

Plus: Biron was solid in nets

Plus: We’re still not out of the playoffs, yet

  43. avatar dose says:

    Dave on Mar 14th, 2010 21:21:38 said:

true enough. but i don’t recall him talking specfically about de-men and it’s what i’ve been raving about for 100 years.

  44. avatar Healy says:

I disagree with the negative Tavares comments so I am going to stick up for him. Kid is 19 in his first ever season learning the ropes and getting his body to adjust. You can tell from the jump he’s had since the Olympic break that he’s been fatigued (both mentally and physically). The getting on his case sounds too much like what I heard about Bertuzzi, Connolly, Jokinen, Chara, Luongo and any number of other kids who struggled when they first started out here. I think once JT puts it together over the next couple years we will all be glad he’s here.

  45. avatar MorDraftPicks says:

Love the last 2 games, however, they were at home and winnable (yes the Devils were a winnable game with Danis). Talk to me on Sunday after the west coast (0-3) swing.

  46. avatar LouD says:

Great picture of that piece of garbage our team calls home. Thank you to Kate Murray and Charles Wang for using the Islanders in your political and real estate games.

  47. avatar nightfly says:

@Jim Clark – actually… IIRC that was the bus driver! Love that movie. And I see KO playing pretty well, though the puck isn’t finding the net. He dipped his shoulder and drove in on JSG in the second, got off a nice shot and the Isles almost cashed in the rebound.

They looked very good for long stretches last night. The passing down low was especially sweet with Comeau and Bailey, those goals were pretty much identical setups.

+ Trevor Gillies’ first NHL point and league-leading fu-manchu. In fact, the fu-manchu should have been third star of the game.

  48. avatar Helene says:

Uh, ‘scuse me – raising a few ticket prices. 6000 season ticket holders this season. Wait till next year. 80% of people I’ve spoken with are not renewing!!! $400 a ticket and $484 for parking. In this economy? I don’t think so. And I don’t have the most expensive seat to begin with.
But it was great seeing back to back wins, particularly factoring in time change. Who did that? I was off from “spring forward”. Felt really badly for both teams trying to function after night games and then 5 PM start. Was pleasantly surprised, having expected a lack-luster performance from all.

  49. avatar John says:

Very encouraged to seeing the way Comeau has played over the past month. He should definitely be considered among the core. If we aren’t able to land Hall or Seguin in the draft, Fowler, Gudbrandson or Gormley suits me just well. We need a top 4 Dman – one from the draft and one from Free Agency (Hamhuis or Volchenkov), along with a top 6 forward to help JT (Frolov or Whitney). We aren’t that far off. And let Matty Martin be a regular on this team next season.

  50. avatar Mike in Bohemia says:

I went to both games this weekend and they looked allright. I think its better for these guys to win & get some confidence than to worry about which # they’ll draft. The rankings aren’t an exact science, although so many people seem to be positive exactly who the islanders must draft to avoid disaster. Personally, I’d rather get rid of the losing atmosphere thats been surrounding this club, go into the off-season with some confidence, and let the chips fall where they may in the draft.

  51. avatar isles71 says:

Snow should be embarassed for his lack of vision at the deadline. Nice to see the players have not thrown in the towel, unlike Snow!!!

  52. avatar Steve from Commack says:

hey cb, have u ever considered getting an IPB iphone app? would love to see that.

  53. avatar Hockey1919 says:

Not great for the draft position, but there is no way I’m ever going to be down over a win. The Islander season ticket holders, at the very least, deserved this weekend string of home wins.

We shouldn’t worry about winning, the Leafs should be more afraid of losing. Play hard and let karma win the lottery for you. Think the NHL will want to burn the Leafs by having the Bruins pick first? I say it’ll be rigged in our favor!

  54. avatar UIF says:

Comeau’s looked very good before late in seasons during meaningless games. I’m pulling for him to be consistent, but I’d hold off on the “part of the core” talk at this time, personally. I thought Gordon’s quotes about Comeau after the game were dead on.

  55. avatar IslesRock says:

CB, if the Isles do spend next year, will Snow sign an enforcer like Boogaard?

  56. avatar John says:

CB – I see 5 shoe-ins among our top 9 next season – JT, JB, KO, MM and Fransie. Where do you see the following fit in or do they fit in – Schremp, Bergy, Comeau and Hunts (What’s his trade value with 6 mill owed for 3 yrs). Would love to see Martin on the team next season, and might not be so bad to have Parky back as well.

  57. avatar Double W says:

WTG CB – you were waaaay off on your 4 point weekend. A 5 point weekend!!! Haha. Great call. A top 5 pick is not that much worse than a top 3 pick this year.

  58. avatar Froggy says:

Plus – back to back wins – going with my daughters to the games (one per game)

Plus – being in the barn

    Plus – Comeau

Minus – Okposo not making the strides I had expected

Plus – Rolo and Biron playing like professionals

Minus – no one really getting a good shot on Phaneuf

Minus – I know this is going to sound ridiculous – but would it be that big of a deal for Wang to spend a few extra bucks to actually have the holders with the seat guards for the toilets filled up?!?! What a joke and disgrace.

CB – would love to get the reason why this is the way it is.

Minus – might be the last game I root for us to win…as the playoffs ain’t happenin…and it’s time for the race to the bottom.

  59. avatar hockey8 says:

    5 of 6 points!!!
Nice to see we went after Phaneuf! Would like to have seen someone put his lights out!! KO Should have got him as well…

Biron looking strong – Resign him!!!

  60. avatar JackB says:

GREAT! Now Wang is going to have to dump some more salary to put the barn back together after the storm.

  61. avatar orngfan says:

somewhere kate murray is saying “the nassau coliseum is a PERFECTLY acceptable facility for a professional sports franchise”

its like we’re living in a dreamland..

  62. avatar EJ-1since40 says:

I am glad to post that I ate crow over the predictions on the last 3 home games(posted 0 points). Especially suprising was the effort against the Devils.

Even though there was no action on the pay back for Dion yesterday, the Isles played well and had him looking over his shoulder all game. Hats off to MM for his play and verbal challenge that went unanswered.

Completely different feel out there from a visual point of view with MM and TG in the line-up. Amazing what a couple of wins can do for HOPE..

Like CB said before yesterday’s tilt, win and only 7 points behind the Bruins. With the Rag$ winning and only 1 point out, can you say SWEEP that 3 game Western roadie? Then go into MSG against the hated blue shirts with some ummf..

Aint over yet, but we need some W’s..

Wanger, tell Garth to get up on a picker and with a few of rolls of duct tape, the ol’barn will be as good as new!

  63. avatar CJCB says:

BIG + Gilles with a min of playing time adding and assist and who said Enforcers are useless? LOL, why send Martin down??? Martin and Gilles our toughness for next year, make it so Snow!!!

Im order for this franchise to start to move forward, WE MUST finish 29th. That would guarantee Hall or Seguin. 28th, 27th or 26th would not. Fowler, Gunderson or Gormley would be OK, but wont speed up the rebuild. Start losing again!!!

+ 1 Hockey1919! Forget the picks. Play to win now! These kids are bringing it, and they can be exciting to watch.

Let ‘em get some playoff experience if they can. I seriously doubt anyone here would rather choose a pick than a ticket to a playoff game. We got our # 1 last year. Let Wangsie pony up his share.

Plus- Franzie on the PP, sorry Dougie.

Plus- Sim like him or hate him, his goals are all big ones.

Plus- Bergie skating like a demon

    Plus- Freddy the Hit Man.

Plus- Steit mic’d and looking like our next Captain.

Plus- I got my Moulson retro Jersey

We need size on defense no question that size helps.

LOL, the Isles “have every intention” of spening this summer….YEAH to get to the cap floor.
Any more than that I’ll have to see to believe.

Great games this weekend, love the effort and seeing things temporarily come together again. And also GLIMPSES of greatness for the future. Good job boys, keep up the good work!

  68. Been out of town, to a small town outside of Pittsburgh where I’m charmed by not being able to go very far in public without seeing plenty of people in their Penguins jerseys. I pray one day it gets that way here and everyone wears the royal blues!
Can’t wait to watch the DVR. I’m upset at the KO comments. They worry me. But I’m pretty sure I see a star in him.

I’ve been a non-believer in Comeau, and I’m glad he’s turned it around. I always said when he plays his game its hard to deny he belongs here. I hope it keeps up. Love Matt Martin. Don’t mind him starting next season as an Islander…all season.
I feel like we really need a top 3 pick, someone that can step in fairly quickly. This is gonna be interesting.

Anyone else see the irony in Doug “Dead” Weight not being in the line up having a positive effect on this team. Maybe by adding a little toughness (Gillies/Martin) guys can go play hockey without the fear of being destroyed. Or perhaps it’s just the relaxed atmosphere knowing there is no pressure.

I get all giddy after an isles win or two. Boy, would I be one happy person with continual winning! Why is Gillies in the line-up? I thought he was tough. Just don’t see it, he has 0 talent. Matty Martin on the other hand…..Woooh hooo, love that kid!

  71. avatar (Sim)ple says:

Whoever pushed Snow to draft Matt Martin should be promoted. What a player he has the potential to turn out to be. I had no idea he was that good a passer. Love his toughness, tenacity, and above all, his willingness to get in front of the net. No one else does it on this team aside for Moulson and Sim.

Every time someone on this board complains about the salary cap floor and not willing to spent I get frustrated. It reminds (painfully) that I am a Mets fan and that organization spends over 100 million dollars for its 25 man roster and frequently gets beaten in September by the 15 million dollar Marlins. Payroll means nothing, it’s all about the talent. We’re getting there, all Snow has to do is add a BIG D-man, scrappy player, and one skilled forward. The rest should fall into place.

Bruins are losing to Devils with under 5 to go in the 3rd. Hopefully the Isles get at least 6 out of possible 8 points in their current road swing. 7 points out at this point. Could be as low as 5 by tomorrow night.
