ANAHEIM 5 ISLANDERS 4 (OT)
Another third period fold; Gordon bolts interview
CB’s 24 hours of Bruins-Penguins
Leading 4-2 after two periods facing an opponent that appeared out of sync and lifeless, the Islanders were out-shot by Anaheim 14-2 and out-scored 2-0 in the third period before Saku Koivu scored on a breakaway 14 seconds into overtime.
Scott Gordon, after a series of softball questions after a tough loss, walked away from MSG Network’s Rob Carlin during the live postgame show when the sideline reporter asked about the Islanders’ third period troubles. My hunch is Gordon was upset because he addressed in Carlin’s first question how the Ducks came back. Instead of walking out, Scott should have gone toe-to-toe with him and tell the interviewer why he thought the question was BS.
The Islanders have been out-scored by 38 goals in the third period this season.
Said Howie Rose immediately after the blow-off: “Sometimes a non-answer is more of an answer than you sometimes verbalize. Scott not really happy with the question, I guess. But I think it’s a fair one when you consider it’s been a theme and tonight it reared itself again.”

4:00 pm: First off, congratulations to Rhett Rakhshani on his selection as one of the ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s player of the year.
Whether you’re monitoring the playoff race or The Fall for Seguin and Hall, just about every game last night worked in the Islanders’ favor. With a win tonight, the Islanders would close to within five points of eighth-place Boston with eleven games to go.
Most believe, with good reason, that the odds of the Islanders making the playoffs are outlandish. But there’s also the matter of every team in the East from 8-15 being pretty crummy. Yeesh. If only for one time, maybe they should have a play-in tournament. Ironically, that’s kind of what’s going on now anyway. Rangers play Boston on Sunday.
From the great Eric Hornick, here is some clarification on the five-point achievement of John Tavares in Vancouver on Tuesday.
Tavares tied the Islanders’ record of five points in a game by a rookie. He’s only the third to do so on the road.
MOST POINTS, ROOKIE, ONE GAME: …………… 5
John Tavares (2-3)……………………….3/16/10 at Vancouver
Mikko Makela (2-3)………………………1/28/86 vs. Toronto
Pat LaFontaine (3-2)……………………..3/3/84 at Toronto
Mike Bossy (1-4) ………………………..11/1/77 vs. Atlanta
Bryan Trotter (1-4)……………………..11/26/75 at Minnesota
Bryan Trottier (3-2) ……………………10/11/75 vs. Los Angeles
Dave Hudson (1-4)……………………….3/3/73 vs Vancouver
Curbing the giddiness from Tavares’ five-point bonanza on Tuesday is the knowledge that he had five points combined in his previous 20 games (one goal and four assists). Yep, he’s a kid, all right.
If anyone’s around, see you tonight for game commentary.

Please Wait

Stamkos finished with 23 goals and 23 assists for 46 points in his rookie year; this is almost identical to what JT will most likely finish with. Let’s hope that JT’s development will keep moving along a similar path as the 2008 #1 pick once he has a full season and summer of pro workouts under his belt.
If isles miss playoffs by 6 points or less they have nobody to blame but themselves for playing dipietro half the games when roleson was hot. Plus trading sutton for what’s really a 3 rd rounder
The Fall for Seguin and Hall … where have I heard that before … (cough.. Jiggs..cough)… I remember when Mikko Makela scored those 5 points and everyone on this blog posted how he was the next savoir of this team.
(2): Far more accurately, if they miss the playoffs by that margin (which is IMO quite possible) they can blame their 7-game losing streak- in which numerous different goalies played, many of the opponents were “winnable” games, and the Isles just werent winning. That one streak of games where they let points slip on by could very well have affected the outcome of the entire season. If they had gone .500 in that span, they would be ahead of the Rangers right now and everything would look different… everything.
Suddenly, ALL of those overtime losses in the season catch up with you.
I don’t think all the people on the blog were alive or at least remember Mikko or Ari Haanpaa.
Thanks to Elias for helping me to be “Great” and to you for publicizing it.
Let’s all hope that Tavares has more 16-19-22 in him and not much Mikko Makela or Dave Hudson (43 points in his Isles career, and 183 points overall) in him.
I was just about to say that seeing Mikko Makela’s name on this list immediately curbed some of my giddiness. I remember people used to cheer Mikko’s name…when it was announced as a scratch.
ok so the fall for Seguin and Hall may not be all that promising for Islander fans, but… Tarasenko or Kabanov cant but help Petrov and his chances of crossing the pond. A Kirll to Kirill connection would be pretty exciting.
I really don’t want to see them raise to mediocratic. I’d rather see them blow it down the stretch so that we could continue to build through the draft.
I like #2’s comments. Isn’t it funny how DiPietro has helped to ruin the last 3 seasons for the Isles. DP and Berginhiem is proof positive that Mad Mike Milbury is still screwing us.
Easton…I was thinking the same thing. All those close losses, all those blown leads, having DP screw up whatever was working in Dec/Jan when we were crushing Detroit and Jersey at home and beating the Avs in Denver…all we would have needed from all those games are maybe 3-5 more pts and we’d be right in the middle of it. Even so, we win the next two, by the time our game ends tomorrow night, regardless of what anyone else does, we’re 3 pts. out. Kind of sick. I just can’t root against us until we’re mathematically eliminated. I’m sure its better that we get a top pick, but hell…fun and excitement are rare around here. Would love to see them defy the odds and make it interesting.
Mikko Makela ended his career at a half a point a game pace… I would take him and his stats on the Isles now.
Mikko Makela and Ari Haanpaa mentions! I love it! Can i just indulge myself by throwing out the names Mark Hamway, Dale Henry, Randy Boyd, Brian Curran, Alan Kerr, Bob Bassen, and Brad Lauer. Everyone deserves there reference at one point or another here.
The giddiness of his five point night is tempered by the realization that the team may miss the playoffs, yet come nowhere near a top three pick to get Seguin, Hall, or Fowler.
If the Islanders miss the playoffs it will be because Roloson stunk from January 19th to February 14th, losing 6 of 7 games and giving up 23 goals. Rick DiPietro played much better in the streak, giving up 11 goals in 5 games. The Islanders “offense” of “they’re either too old or too young” went cold as well.
Lets wait till the end of the season and see if the isles miss by 1 point or 8 points and than the post mortems can begin. My guess ia that they won’t be close which will mean possibly a top 3 pik.
TOP 3 PICK PLEASE….
It would be great if this team defies the odds and gets in to the playoffs. These young players would get invaluable experience, and much needed confidence for next year. Face it, we are not getting a top 3 pick-so what’s the difference between a 5 or 8? If you are saying this is improbable, you are dead wrong. I saw the Rags play yesterday. Ugh!!! They were so awful, and boston does not look any better. Always, always root for the win! Except for the top 3, draft picks are nothing more than a roll of the dice!
Mikko’s first assist that night came on Denis Potvin’s record 291st goal for D-Men. Other than that the only good thing Makela was good for was getting traded for Hubie McDonough and Ken Baumgartner
The way I look at it is we are going to have plenty of time over the summer to discuss all bad that currently hovers over this organization, from ownership, to management, to the LHP, to the TOH, to the crumbling barn, ect.
A win tonight puts us five points out. A win tommorow night puts us 3 points out. The Rag$ play Boston on Sunday, and if they beat a fading B’s team, then it’s on for Wednsday night at MSG and the 3D game.
Remember in ‘07 what had to happen for us to sneak in to the 8th spot, with Nolan at the helm and Duuuuubie in between the pipes? That Sunday afternoon game at the Meadowlands was awesome, as the joint was packed with blue and orange.
Isles got the first one out of the way on Tuesday vs. Vancouver, now it’s the bangged up Ducks team with a suspended D-man. Got to get that Western roadie sweeeeep..
Too bad I wasn’t alive yet when Makela was around. I only started following the Isles around 1993.
we should have a good pick regardless. some of our younger players have to learn how to win. no better time then now. we need to end the season on a high note and have positive feelings going into next year even if management does not want to spend a penny on putting a winning team on the ice yet they have the nerve to raise prices.
first i don think this website was around when Mikko makela played.
secondly Tavares could finish with better than stats that Stamkos did first year and he didnt have Lecavalier,St Louis to play with.
Even Patrick kane had comparable goal stats as rookie. If Tavares had another good scorer on his line he could of had tone of assists like kane did.
I really hope tavares is breaking out. Scary is he has been ice cold for 30 games and still only 8 points behind Duchene. He is only 2 goals behind him.
For the isles to make the playoffs thyre gonna have to be five or six games above .500 (if not better). So what’s that, maybe two losses allowed out of the remaing dozen? Would be awesome to watch, but I’m not counting on it. No, the goal I’m aiming for is just to pass the Rangers. I know it’s juvenile, but my hate is all I have left
Rick Dipietro caused this team the playoffs? BULL CRAP!
It was never a playoff team EVER! Go back and look at the roster at start of the year and tell me what convinced you it was a playoff team? Ott hasn’t been on fire since they got Sutton, they’ve lost a ton. It’s going to take a lot of new blood and continued growth before this is a playoff team.
Rick’s stats thus far this year:
Games played:8
Goals against: 20
GAA: 2.60
SVP: .900
Shutouts: 1
Assist: 1
Record 2-5
Trying to blame him is crazy and only done by people who for some reason do not like him. If he’s responsible for the Isles not making the playoffs then what of Biron?
Games played: 22
Goals against: 63
GAA: 3.03
SVP: .904
Record: 5-12
SO: 1
Assist: 1
or even Roloson: who only has a .909 SVP and a higher Goals against average then DiPietro but lower then Biron?
Games played: 44
Goals against: 123
GAA: 2.89
SVP: .909
Shutouts: 1
Record: 22-15-6
Assist: 0
No, none of the three Isles goalies can be blamed for the team not making the playoffs. The defense can be blamed and Snow can be blamed for not icing an NHL defense or having enough toughess because it caused the team to play intimitated all year and intimitated teams don’t play their best or win but this blaming Ricky for everything is crazy, the numbers don’t even support the argument. The numbers show he missed so much time and still was the Isles best goalie.
win or lose i want a high scoring game with tavares playing like he did last game
Haha, so great to see JT compared to Isles Hall of Famers Bossy, Trotts and Patty Lafontaine.
As for Rhett: he’s getting his wish for staying in college. He’s captain of the top ranked Division I hockey program at Denver, and their top scorer. Kudos!
Mikko Makela!!! Whip out those 3D glasses!
Maybe Eric can confirm this, but I remember Mikko Makela scoring a clutch goal in game 6, at the Coliseum, of that Flyers division final series in 1987 (same year as the Easter Epic). That was a great game, and it tied the series up at 3. My recollection also is that in game 7, we gave up two shorthanded goals on the same power play, and that was all she wrote.
who here wants to tank and have a top 3 pick??? another high end talent would be nice… thats a big piece to the puzzle!! bigger than going on a winning streak that means nothing at the end of the season!! i mean we seeit every year, a bad team wins some games at the end of the year.. wow big deal!! LETS GET A TOP 3 PICK PLEASE!!! FOR THE FUTURE!!!!!!
I don’t think its DP’s fault we mostly like won’t make the playoffs. He played well when he played and I don’t buy the excuse that he ruined chemestry.
Regarding the post comparing JT’s rookie year to Stamkos. I hope JT works hard on his shot from outside the crease because so far he hasn’t shown much of a shot. He has quick hands down low but if he’s to score more than 30 goals a year and get into the 40’s and 50’s he needs to be a threat like stamkos is. Ever see that guys shot? Why doesn’t JT shoot like that?
I don’t think it’s DP’s fault for our mid season slide, however I do think his inclusion to the lineup did ruin the chemistry. Players have been quoted saying that it was a very tough situation having 3 goaltenders in the fold. Therefore, I have no doubt it killed the vibe a little bit.
Hope KO is back tomorrow. I’ll be at the Kings game tomorrow!! First ever Kings game since living in L.A. for 5+ years. Let’s go Islanders!!
okposo is back in for tonight lets make it 4 in a row go isles
I admit last year that finishing last was and getting Tavares was the best thing for the team. Funny thing is if there was a re draft we might want Duchene. So lets hope that our players do well like Tavares, Comeau and Bailey. We are going to get a quality player regardless. I agree we Jaffe that we need to spend some money to help these young players grow. This hoping our team bottoms out nonsense has to stop and you are not helping CB. Write features about our prospects if anything else.
Low risk high reward. Sign him…
Nothing is garanteed. Why root for this team to lose? With this teams luck they go on to finish with a top 3rd worst record and lose the lottery. This team has lost a lot the last few years, I want some wins. Can still get a good player 5-9
Good evening, if anyone is alive out there. Please check in if you are.
Contrary to the earlier published report, Kyle Okposo is playing…CB
Huge game tonight.
Got a beer and some Goldfish(my 3yr olds) GAME ON!
Home sick : (
Lot’s of rest and an Islanders win is what the Dr. ordered. Well the 2nd part is my cure!
Martin Biron in goal. Good record against Anaheim, but still a surprise for a team publicly talking playoffs.
Hey everyone.
CB, any word on what KO’s injury was?
CB any word on why things changed with Okposo?
Strummer was right on. DiPietro is not to blame. That’s so ridiculous. Did he mess up the chemistry? It takes weak teammates to be so drastically effected by this chemistry change.
I’ll root for a win too, but if they lose I’ll sort of see a bright side. I’m way more concerned with off-season moves and the LHP.
thanks for doing this CB, on a plane right now back to ny and this the only way i can follow the game
I miss Blake
Howie talking about how happy Blake is to be in Anaheim. Of course he is. No pressure. I really should have napped before this game.
my bad too.
glad to see Okposo playing tonight. Also Getzlaf.
okay with Biron in net tonight. Save Rolli for tomorrow night against the stronger offensive team.
Hit the net Gervais!
I don’t put all the blame on DP, however chemistry is important. I also think the defense naturally plays better when they have confidence in their goaltender.
What are the odds that this game is on a TV when i get to the bars tonite?
Evening all. Predicting a 3-2 win.
Jaffe saying Okposo looks good tonight. I feel like he’s missing a step. Is it me?
Parky!
Richard Park goal. 1-0.
Awesome. I do think this will be a one goal win for either team.
Can you say GRINDER?
ok GRINDER
That wasn’t fun.
ouch
Can you say Biron should have gotten that?
Softie past Biron. 1-1. Belesky.
They use Bro Hymn too?
cb,
i know the schedule is compressed because of the olympics, but how can the league continually allow back to back games in different cities and expect the quality of play not to suffer? the nhl needs a real leader, not bettman. no big time tv deal, allowing colon campbell to judge(?)discipline and the way the schedule is constituted needs to be fixed.
ok, Biron should have gotten that
Well, that was a short celebration…
good play meyer
I’m at work right now & have nothing to do. Wish I could watch the game tonight, but nhl gamecenter doesn’t give me the feed since i’m in L.A. Anyone know where I can stream it??
There’s a couple beers in the fridge, so I’m going to crack those open & listen for the time being. Gotta love work
JT looking good again!
There’s nothing wrong with back-to-games. Criminal is Detroit, Columbus, Nashville and many other West team’s travel schedules compared to the Islanders, Rangers and the F’ers.
JT = John Tavares or Jeff Tambellini?
Where’s Bailey?
Neilson should have scored on that
funny Derek…. ; )
1-1, 5 mins left. Nielsen just missed.
Please never confuse john tavares for jeff tambellini. JT = Tavares. Tamby (quite fitting) is Jeff. But that’s just me.
Why’s Bailey centering the fourth line?
No no no. LT is Lawrence Taylor, not LaDainian Tomlinson. JT is John Tonelli, not John Tavares. Thanks for letting me clear that up.
I wold not blame DP either but things did seem to go down b/c of the changes. Roli was well on a roll and i think we can all agree that players play better in front of a goalie they are confident with, so imo, it was a bunch of things.
all we can do is go from here, keep fighting hard till the end and leave with our heads held high knowing we gave it all till the end.
Anyone have any opinions as to why Marty is in? I know CB said that he has a good record vs. the ducks but Roli has been solid and had 2 days rest.
CB, can you share any stories on Blakey?
Of all the players I’ve ever met with the Islanders or other teams, no one is more of a self-made player than Jason Blake.
hahaha exactly Botta! Tavares is just Tavares.
my point was back to back games in different cities when you have 3 and four nights off.
7th woman…..LOVE the blog!!
Freddy Meyer playing like he’s making a case for himself getting the Norris
pull Biron. another one he should have had, sorry, I’m not seeing it.
Dominant shift by Ducks leads to Visnovsky goal. Sloppy playing by Biron. 2-1 Anaheim.
It’s Rolly time.
that was a rip. not biron’s fault
Beachchica - Thank you. (As I sit here in my signed Jason Blake islanders T-shirt from 2004 waiting for a better story about Blake than the one we just got.) ;o)
Blake’s whole career has been pure perseverance & determination.
Why do so many teams use this horrendous goal song?
KO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KO KO KO
Come on boys! Keep it together.
KYLE!!!!!!!!
KO!!!
ok, maybe Okposo is playing good.
anaheim and la are basically the same city
KO is OK
Kyle Okposo pretty goal around Aaron Ward. 2-2.
Holy Crap, KO!!! I know there aren’t many games tonight, but that one deserves #1 Star.
Come on Jaffe, that was KO’s goal.
KO=BEAST!
Yes. LA and Anaheim are only separated by about 40 minutes on the freeway.
Listen to the game sucks. Go KO!
2-2 end of 1st.
7th Woman, you are quite welcome. I love women who love hockey as much as I do. I am a big Deb Placey fan too!!
Please keep the faith in our Isles. : )
KO doesn’t suck. Wow.
The above was purposeful, ironic understatment, should it not be clear.
Has anyone seen Taveras ever take a hard shot up high or from the circles?
being we have really crappy luck, what are the odds garth gives moulson a nice deal and he warps into mark lawrence?
This team can be a force when the system is working!
How can you not love Parky? Class act, tough as nails, moves his feet like Jason Blake.
no i have never seen Tavares just let one rip, waiting for it
park is just a slighly better version of andy hilbert. a small guy who can skate, has mediocre hands, and on a good team is a fourth line/pk guy at best.
Nice segment.
His hands on the last goal were pretty impressive to me. Picked up his own rebound to go top shelf.
he’s in the nhl he does have skill.my point is on a good team he is not a top 9 foward, a nice role/depth player.
beachchica - Yep! I do believe women are the fastest growing demographic of the NHL. & rob added Slap Shot to the list of Movies! Okay, NOW I can go vote!
Blakey was always a fave of mine, such great hustle and grit frm a scrappy player BUT….
He should have stayed. I think it was a slap in the face to the fans more than anyone when he didnt take his deal. The leafs deal was not that much better, honestly.
He was a big fish in a small pond and should have appreciated it more. he went frm a career high with us to a meh season w/the leafs. lesson learned?
And on this team he also adds the intangible of grit and fire. I’ve yet to see a game where he doesn’t get his nose dirty and I’ve certainly seen one where he’s lost a bucket of teeth and come back the next game or so to play just as fearlessly. He’s also scored and assisted on some pretty big shorties for our club.
Slap Shot rules!!!
“The fans are standing up to them! The security guards are standing up to them! The peanut vendors are standing up to them! And by golly, if I could get down there, I’d be standing up to them!”
Re: Slapshot “The Dinny Phipps tragedy”
We should resign Park…agreed?
Agreed. Thank you.
Is the game online anywhere?
game is on ATDHE.net
Well…that was quick.
KO MS JT!!
Yeah Boys!
PP Goal Okposo. Hiller pulled. 3-2 Islanders.
KO! 2 tonight
I love Tavares’ aggressive left arm swing on the backcheck, great stuff…
KO is OK again
And a cameo appearance by Gary & Claire Harding! Excellent! And KO with his second goal! He must be feeling MUCH better now!
wow guess KO is really OK! lol, woot!
can’t……..stay……….awake……..any……..longer. mUst sleeP!
GO ISLES
Guess Jaffe’s not too much of a homer given his response to the diving co-incidental minor
There might be something to Okposo in his first game back after an illness/injury. Remember when he came back from H1N1 he got the OT winner..
Must re-sign Jaffe to a long term deal. What is the status of this?
CB What are the chances we have a steal in Dylan Reese?
The Isles are taking it to them.
They looked like they were on a PP during the 4 on 4
Defense is playing well!!! a little over 2 goals a game the last 6 games
Looks like KO’s undisclosed upper body injury was a bionic installation. Kid’s playing with uh, jam.
Reese has been a very pleasant surprise, even though his first two games he took two bad (late) penalties. He took them to heart and has been playing very well. Um, anyone miss Trevor Gillies 1:33 TOI? anyone?
One of the stronger games offensively we have seen from this team so far this season?
Does Scott Gordon have a little Herb Brooks in him?
Still 3-2 Islanders mid-second. Anaheim defense struggling badly.
Bad give, big save
Gordon has to have a little Herb Brooks in him in order to work with such a young team. He is a wonderful, technical teacher. And one that works constantly.
Haha Jaffe with the on air slip up gotta love it
We’re taking the puck away like taking candy from a baby. I’m worried that we’re only up 3-2.
pp
NYI go on the PP with 5:58 left in the second.
get ready to toss your caps
I can imagine Gordon quoting Brooks….
“You think you can win on talent alone? Gentlemen, you don’t have enough talent to win on talent alone. “
Damn, we need to be in the Western Conference.
JT on fire the past 2 games!
who are these guys?!?!?
I just got in and cannot believe what I am seeing. Who is this team we call the Isles? I love it.
4-2 Islanders. Tavares.
JT! I LOVE IT!
#91!!!!!!!!!
JT!!!
I am having a ball watching this game this is great! Go kids!!
en fuego…..go isles
If Tavares can get another point or two tonight or Saturday, he has an excellent chance of being NHL First Star of the Week. I’m sure the league would love to give it to a rising star.
I can’t believe I’v come off the Draft Pick bandwagaon, and now I’m saying “only 5 points back” ! Lets get Ovechkin an Invite to the Island for April !!!!
Monkey off back, finally. Hopefully,
Amen, would love to meet the Caps in the 1st round. Fond memories of Ferraro in the spring of ‘93
lighthousemylasthope couldnt agree more buddy
I’d like to see Matt Moulson get to 30 by the end of the season. Tavares doing well was expected. Moulson doing well is a gift.
4-2 Islanders, end of 2.
CB, do you think the Ducks are suffering from a hangover from the nonsense that went on last night against the Hawks?
You gotta believe!!!!
Good Performance so far, they have to keep it going
I like this team a lot, and don’t get the wishing for losses for a high draft pick. That is absolute disrespect to how hard this team is working right now.
Staten: A little bit, but it’s more about the Islanders. The young guys are playing fast and loose as all teams do when the pressure starts to come off at the end of the season. This is more the norm. The tank you saw last season was the exception, and the difference in goal from this year to last year is significant. Remember the final weekend of last season?
i dont care what happens at this point. i want them to go to the playoffs but i want them to get a top 5 draft pick.
An in game Stat Trick:
1.Isles have pp goals in 5 straight –first time since Dec 4 -13, 2008. Strangely they lost all 5 of those games, all in regulation.
2. Kyle Okposo records his second career 2-goal game. He’ll look for a hat in the third.
3. Isles have chased Olympians Luongo and Hiller in successive games.
re:Lighthousemylasthope:
Your last post makes me sooooo happy! Lets get more ppl off that bandwagon!
WOW, just got in and so happy Okposo is back and doing well. Not too happy to see Gillies isn’t dressed. He should be. Jackman can’t drop the gloves.
Interested to see RR in camp next year.
I can’t get the game on TV where I am, and I see Biron is between the pipes, but as far as playoffs go let’s remember Roli is a guy who likes to get hot at good times…so it’s not inconceivable they continue this push.
It was about this time last year that they totally tanked, I’m thinking that horror show against the Canes last year where they lost 9-0, or something like that
We’d be embarrassed if we met the Caps in the playoffs.
(178) Thank you to the legendary MSG/Fox/Sportschannel statistician Eric Hornick for his in-game stat trick!
Can’t get the game on Justin.tv tonight. I’m away on a business trip. I wish I could see this one. How is Reese playing?
He looks pretty good so far oncesinceforty
Let’s see. Isles vs Caps this season:
FINAL WSH (3) - NYI (2) OT
FINAL NYI (4) - WSH (3) OT
FINAL NYI (4) - WSH (5) SO
FINAL WSH (7) - NYI (2)
Did i miss a game? Aside from the last one, it looks like we can stand pretty strong against the caps. That 7-2 loss was also when the Isles were on their big slide & Roli was splitting time with DP.
I know everyone hopes we tank, but damn it feels good to see how well they are playing right now (or how bad the opposition under estimates them). And god forbid we don’t get a top 5 pick… 2008 draft pick # 12 was Tyler Myers… something like that could work out for the Isles!
Reese is the man
Ducks power play.
correction: Ducks “Time Warner Cable” power play.
and don’t forget their “Del Taco” Penalty Kill hahahaha I could go for a Shrimp Taco right now.
re: onesinceforty
you can watch the game on ATDHE.net, streaming there for sure.
Sure looks like the Ducks are trying to set up Selanne for his 600th. That usually doesn’t help.
(187) Regular season and Playoffs are different. Entirely.
sweet! Thanx ars9x
ars9x, Thank you!
By the way if the 7th woman would like to bake cookies or Lasagne for me, as I am home sick, I would gladly except. : )
It might not work for JT, but it would for me…
Ducks power play. Islanders need one more kill.
The ducks look sluggish.
Ducks goal. 4-3
ok. KO hat trick on an empty net?
Ducks with some life. Next five minutes big. 4-3, 9 minutes left.
Hunters having one of his better games in ages. Makes me wonder if he’s hurt or was
LOL — great… that will just get me in more trouble. I get smacked around for being “motherly.” But I’ll think about it.
Only mere minutes till we can say “we win Saturday night and we’re only 3 points back from playoffs” OMG
(And my little 2 cents of oh by the way, I played Soccer Goalie for 30 years, including competitive college, I recogonize a sub-par Keeper when I see one, Biron - nice guy, but not good. And that whole little DiPietro experiement absolutely RUINED the team for 3 weeks)
Biron glove save was probably the biggest of the game right there.
yo who is this Biron guy?
3 Ducks smash on Tambellini and no one sticks up for the kid.
Marty MUCH better in 2nd/3rd. i was really worried in the 1st
chris here’s an idea. what about the league making the team that finishes 17th get the 1st pick,18th get the 2nd,19th get the 3rd,etc etc etc. i think this would give teams that are out of the playoffs an incentive to at least try and finish out the season.
Hanging on for dear life.
DAMN!
Ugh!
Ducks tie it with goalie pulled. 4-4.
Tie game
There are the Islanders we know and love.
Ughhh…disappointing
well, that stinks
more hockey is ok with me
THERE’S MY ISLANDERS!
Every game seems like groundhog day for this team.
Can’t blame anyone…That was a great screen…
we need some muscle to not let people screen Biron like that.
man that BLOWS…felt like it was coming tho
Hillen blew that one.
Very exciting game. Glad to see quality hockey out of the boys. Gordon watching the replay on the jumbotron, smh.
I am going to kill my husband. It’s his fault. At the 1 minute mark he said it was going to OT. Considering how tired I am, this is the LAST thing I wanted.
Anaheim dominated 3rd period to send game into overtime.
I’ve had a total of six hours sleep in the last two nights because of travel, so I was kinda counting on this.
well, at least this helps me kil more time at work
and boom goes the dynamite… at least it’s a western conference team.
Another 3rd period letdown. Bites the big one. Let’s get back on the forecheck like we were and put this one away.
and we did get a point so far
we need to forget that 4th goal and get the other one
What losers.
CRAP!!
Fantastic.
one word…PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT
F*@# it. Goodnight.
sigh…. watever DRAFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DAMN!!! not too much time i guess. Crap!
well, I said it would be a one goal win. amazing. And we ALL needed this to end quickly. Thank you CB for being a gracious host.
Wow that was bad
what a waste of a point…. i wanted either 2 or 0
Better off losing in regulation if they were going to lose.
Biron is so bad.
Koivu scores 14 seconds into overtime. Awful, awful loss.
Go figure….frustrating third period fold again!!!!!
It would be Gervais… he will never learn. He’s dreadful. How is this guy on an NHL roster?
Oh gee, look who blew the game for us. Gervais and biron… how many times has that happened this year?
Good game for those on our team with talent…
I was just about to say… what the hell is chef bruno doing out there?? Oh well…
GERVAIS SUCKS
chef Bruno strikes again
Biron can’t stop a effin breakaway!!!
Maybe that will send them into the tank for the remaining 11 games
This god awful passive waive your stick at nothing on defense and cover a space needs to go. It’s like watching the same old broken record over and over. Just AWFUL!
BRUNOOO
Every time you think this team might be turning a corner, stuff like this happens. Incredibly frustrating.
poor poor bruno
as long as whats his name didnt get his 600th goal or whatever
Damnit Gervais!!!
leave it to bruno to cough up the puck. he also took the bad penalty early in game that got the ducks back in the game.
some pluses - Tavares 1G,1A, Okposo 2G.
bru…………..no
Gervais again costs us another win. Haven’t we heard this way too many times before?
night ….
thanks CB!
Please. Please. Please. Everyone listen. Bruno Gervais is TERRIBLE. He is our Wade Redden. The only time you notice him is when he f’s up. Send this idiot packing! Ive met him many times. Nice guy. HE SUCKS! Please get rid of him.
Oh well, we are not making the playoffs. Even if we go on another run, we need a lot of help. Just beat the Rangers the two more times we play them and make sure they miss the playoffs.
sickening
oh man, Com freakin on ! you gotta be kidding me! Oh well a Win tomorrow and we’re only 4 points back and 5 outta 6 on a West Coast Trip. Howz that for optimism, benefits of late games and time to drink Red Wine
bruno gervais better not be on this team next season. he is an awful awful awful defenseman. absolutely brutal loss. that should just about end our playoff hopes.
Why is Gervais here again? And why is Witt in the AHL?
Back to rooting for the draft pick. This team still needs a lot of help.
I think Gordon’s head might explode.
Stupid pass by Gervais. There were Islanders open on the other side of the ice. Don’t want to read anymore complaints that Tambelini gets scratched. He sux. Gets ridden off the puck, can’t pass and can’t hit the net.
I’m still waiting for cb to write something up on the horrid play of bruno gervais this year but hasn’t yet. I guess he’s got what snow and gordon has…some kind of fear to say something bad or do something to upset a good kid like bruno
Same Old Islanders…………..Why does this team play like a bunch of pansies when it comes to the 3rd period? When it happens consistently over 71 games I think its time to question HEART in the locker room over Gordo’s system.
Gordon just stormed off the set after the question about why the Isles are -38 GA in the third period.
Haha, Gordon can’t handle a question like that? Seriously?
Wow. Did you see Gordon just walk away from the interview when asked about the 3rd period problems? That was a no-class move.
Yikes, Scott Gordon just walked out on Rob Carlin. He’s obviously not happy.
RUN GORGY RUN!! LOL
Wow, did you just see Gordon storm off after Carlin’s question. It is quite obvious they do not like each other, this has been going on since the beginning of the season.
HA!! Rob Carlin-who is an utter joke, btw- asks a fair question about the team being a -30 (!) in the third and Go-Go storms out. I guess Garth isn’t the only coward…
Best postgame interview this season?
CB is right, those interviews are must watch TV.
What A jerk our coach is.
Gordon has to be better than storming off after a question from Carlin about the 3rd period. I hope he wasn’t hanging out too much with Torts in Vancouver.
Gordon shows his class by walking out on a very fair question by Rob Carlin. Don’t like hearing how your team has been outscored by 38 goals in the 3rd? Change your philosophy then coach!
Rob Carlin is not the media so Gordon can not get fined for what he did, right?
i hope that whole scenario will be ingrained in snows head when player decisions are made
It was a valid question. He should be ashamed - no class.
Gordon is a jerk! Legit question! Unfortunately it reflects negatively on his coaching! maybe he needed the restroom!!
Gordon does not handle losing well. You want that in a coach, but come on and show some class. It was a fair question. 3rd period breakdowns continue to happen with this team, and that is a real problem.
The only way this game has a silver lining is if Gervais is sent to UTAH as a result. Bring in anybody. Hamonic, I don’t care. But Gervais has to be the worst NHL D-man in the NHL.
Maybe he was going to get Bruno to come answer that question?
Please God, help Bruno find a true talent in life so he can abandon his NHL dream.
Once again…Chef Bruno snatches defeat from the clutches of victory!
Agreed, Bruno needs to go.
CB, your take on that interview?
Good for Rob Carlin. He asked a very fair question and Gordo couldn’t handle it. He owes Carlin and all Islander fans an apology and an explanation. He has no answer for these 3rd period problems and he needs to grow up!
Look, I actually feel for Gordon here. You have to. Look at the team Garth has given him to put on the ice. It’s no wonder they blew the lead.
If we all think blowing third period leads suck for us, it’s gotta be 10,000 times worse for Gordon.
Bruno is the goat tonight. I get it, but why no complaining about Hillen (who I love)and Meyer who were both on the ice for the 3rd & 4th goals tonight. Let’s be fair here. Our defense needs lots of help both in size and talent. Bruno is only 1/7th of the problem with our defense.
Gordon needs to chill. Rob Carlin is only doing his job by asking the hard questions.
Bruno should become a contestant on Hell’s Kitchen.
Im happy we lost in ot. I was hoping we lost on regulation. We need to lose a few games now… I really wanted a top 3 pick…
Thanks CB,
As has been the norm, an enjoyable 40 mins of hockey followed by 20 minutea of the most dreadful play you could imagine.
I’m so happy when I bought the holiday pack that the ‘random’ signed puck I got was Chef Bruno. That’s being thrown out.
Bring a body up from Bridgeport, anything has be better than Brutal Gervais, he has singlehandedly cost so many games this yr. Why is this guys playing?
I think Gordo has answerd that question so many times he is tired of making excuses but his behavior is not good none the less. Imagine if Joe Girardi acted like that when asked a question we all know the answer too. We all know the excuse is LACK OF TALENT and we’re small. Gordon prolly is tired of saying it.
I’d love to see Gordon coach in Toronto or Montreal. He’d probably punch out half the fans in the city.
‘why no complaining about Hillen (who I love)and Meyer who were both on the ice for the 3rd & 4th goals tonight?’
Ummmmm, notice they were defending against a power play on the 3rd goal. Why were they defending a powerplay? Oh yea, cause Bruno could rub the body out and instead tripped a guy taking a penalty. Meyer was fantastic tonight. Bruno was….well…..Bruno.
Gordo run run dum dum!!!!!
Furthermore, Gordo is acting as if the tying goal and winning goal were flukey. Give me a break. They lived in our zone the entire 3rd period and we had virtually no offense most of the way. You let a team live in your zone for an entire period and the puck will find a way to the back of your net. As for all of you blaming Bruno for this loss, we were a dead team walking by that time. It just happened to be Bruno’s play that was the last straw. For all you Bruno haters out there, he’s been playing very well.
With all due respect to these “Gordon has no talent out there” and “Gordon hates losing” comments, you still can show some class as a professional coach. This guy has shown no ability to stop 3rd period collapses and has not won a road game in Jersey, Pitt, or Philly as Isles head coach. He has NO right to act like that.
Everyone relax on what Gordon did. Who cares. At least he showed some fricken emotion. That clown in the city does an interview like that every other game. As for Gervais, he’s absolutely horrid. Biron played god awful too. Nice to see them play the whole 60, NOT!! At least JT and KO played well
The Gordon bolt was a stunner. As Carlin was asking the questions, I was thinking, They just blew a lead like that and he’s asking about Tavares and Okposo? And then Rob finally asks the pertinent question and Scott just walks out, knowing it’s on live TV.
Be assured that this will be discussed at great length internally for the next 24 hours, maybe longer. Only Carlin will get grief.
The business has changed. The Islanders are not often asked tough questions by the very small press corps. Sensitive group sometimes, as you may have heard. Geez.
My recommendation to Scott would be, if you don’t like the question, push back. Tell Carlin on air why you think it’s an unfair question. State your facts. Walking out on live TV on the broadcasts that pay you $20 mill a year and keep the franchise standing, not good. Walking out on the fans back home staying up late, worse.
Shame on Scott Gordon for not answering a completely fair, uncontroversial question from Rob Carlin. What a disrespectful move to all of us fans that spend our hard earned money on tickets, and stay up until 12:30 AM watching his team. We deserve to hear answers about how they plan on addressing legitimate issues. That’s his job. Really dissapointing, and real pathetic. I guess a coach with 2 years of NHL experience that includes finishing dead last and not even sniffing the playoffs gives you the right to think you’re above interviews. Hey Gordon, why not figure out a way to motivate your guys in the 3rd period so you don’t have to answer questions like that. And how about you come close to proving yourself as an NHL coach before acting like you’re too good for tough questions. No wonder why this team crumbles under pressure…look at their coach…
Bruno isn’t good, and is the goat, but ya can’t blame the LOSS on him
He’s been playing well? If you mean playing well as in, he hasn’t been making terrible turnovers off of weak clearing attempts as of late, then yeah…he’s been playing well…UNTIL TONIGHT.
Great take on it thanks CB
Please, like a professional coach hasn’t walked out on an interview before? Gordon is PISSED and rightfully so, his team just blew it AGAIN. Its 5 minutes after the game in the heat of the moment. At least he didn’t start dropping the F bomb left and right.
Gordon has always been bad with the press. I remember the Arbour press conference back in 07; it was clear what a master he was. I don’t know if Gordon has ever had an interview that wasn’t awkward.
But really, he wasn’t capable of handling the obvious question? It’s bizarre to see how completely the Isles expect the press to roll over for them.
I’d say that perhaps Gordon took the high road and bolted before he began speaking in tongues as his eyes rolled back into his head. It would have likely been a series of four letter words. It certainly wasn’t going to be ‘Join me at the Lighthouse’
Anyone, I mean anyone of you(readers and commenters) if you were the coach of the Islanders you would take a quick look at Rob Carlin there and shove his microphone down his throat!!! Carlin does not need to make headlines! This is a small young team taking on a greatly superior and experienced Ducks team! Don’t crucify the coach!!! He is far from the one to blame!!!
Well, I guess Gordo has a pulse. Emotion is a good thing but he embarrassed himself there.
I’ve seen Super Bowl losers minutes after the game act with more class than Gordon, that was Bush League Garbage
Dont blame Gordon?…isnt he the one who keeps dressing Gervais and playing him in important situations, Brutal Gervais should be banished from the team for good with all his costly mistakes. Bring up a body from AHL and give someone new a shot, cant be worse than the Brutal one.
Bruno shows short glimpses of being a good player every now and thn but he is piss poor allot of the time. I think he needs to be traided. Maybe to a resteraunt, Chef Bruno, lol
Hey Tuxtax - Carlin asked the question we all wanted him to ask. It’s his job/ If he didn’t ask that question tonight, we’d be all over him here. Don’t blame the messenger. For all the bashing Rob Carlin has taken this season, he did a fabulous job there asking a question that needed to be asked.
If this loss isn’t a punch to the gut AGAIN as ANOTHER 3d period colapse happens, but we as fans have know been made quite aware of the character, or lack there of, of this regime running the Isles:
CW: live on MSG barks at Howie on a simple question.
Snowman: pisses on CB and does not allow him into his office for a few questions regarding the season and our future.
Flash Gordon: tonight, enough said, eh?
When will this end??? A few wins to shed a glimmer of HOPE, and the rug pulled under our feet again??!!
CB, that post is dead on. This was an insult to the fans who stayed up late to watch. Grow up Gordo.
Thinking Flash was wrapped a little tight tonight
Defending Gordon here? Listen, he had no problem answering the softball questions but the minute it turned to a question regarding 3rd period adjustments, which is a direct reflection on coaching, he bolts!! As has been stated here, unfortunately Scott has won nothing yet and does not yet earn the benefit of the doubt. The question needed to be asked an answered! I will be shocked if we don’t get an apology tomorrow night!
Greatly Superior, aren’t they tied for the 12th spot. That was a game that should have been won any way to look at it
While I dislike the result, the result is fair and indicative of a young and inexperienced team. The Killer instinct comes with time and talent. Everyone can agree this team is fun at times, some promising talent, but not ready for primetime. I think we have the right coach and a start on the players. My heart wants the wins, but we need the picks and a bottom five finish. Another high draft year and (I hope agressive FA action) and third periods may look much better next year and beyond.
Why is Bruno still on the team?
I don’t get to see the post game can some one please expand on what happened? What was the question?
CB, is right all the Isles come with an attitude (talking SNow, Gordon etc) that you can’d ask them anything hard or disagree with them, if you do they can’t handle it at all and obvious they don’t like it.
We may end up thanking Bruno if the Isles fall into a funk and lose the majority of their remaining games to get into the top 3 to take either Seguin / Fowler / Gudbranson / Gormley. Gordon has got to show some more class. The young players are making a lot of progress which will probably cost us a top 3 or 5 pick.
Answer the question Gordon, really not an unfair one.
Wonder what Bruno’s cookin pregame in Calgary to wipe away
that disgrace.
Did Jaffe really say they battled in the 3rd??????????????
God Almighty
Gordon should realize that he is coaching in NY not sh*tkick Iowa. We demand answers here. And Rob Carlin was only asking the same questions we as fans would ask if we got the chance. I think our coach has been hanging with Torts too much. He needs to get his but to media training classes. Very unprofessional and very disappointing.
I think Gordon was caught off gaurd. Dopey, big ears, Carlin, asked a hard hitting questin for the 1st time all season, lol…
That stubborness that Gordon exhibited is also the same stubborness that doesn’t instruct his team to trap when he’s holding a lead in the 3rd.
He will either change on the job or after he is fired.
Yes greatly superior, do you think people fear the names Jeff Tambellini, Freddy Meyer, Dylan Reese, Dustin Kohn, Bruno Gervais. Even our best players…Kyle, JT, Bailey? Streit was disregarded by the Canadiens! We are not exactly talking about the 85 Oilers here! Any team in the NHL is greatly superior then the team the Islanders put on the ice each night!
Why not play a defensive system, some of the time, to preserve player engery? It used to be the case that teams with a lack of talent could succeed somewhat using a trapping system. Is that not the case anymore with the no-clutch/grab/hook NHL? And to those saying Bruno is the scapegoat, well, he gave the Ducks a breakaway, in overtime, and had a penalty that led to a goal earlier. Gordo probably wanted to say “Well, if Sutton were here, it would have been different”
I am sick and tired of hearing people blame losses on lack of talent. If there wasn’t any talent, we wouldn’t have beaten the Devils, Canucks, nor the Blackhawks in the passed few weeks. Or are you people gonna start saying we only have talent for 2 periods? Someone has to go. Gervais is awful. Worst defenseman I’ve seen on this team in a while, yet he gets major minutes. Sure now it’s because of all the depth in D, not anything great to call up outta Bridgeport. Except maybe Witt. I would gladly take him over Oh-no Gervais. Something has to change, someone has to go. But hey, if we get Cam Fowler, he can at least take Bruno’s spot.
We need the top 3 pick. These wins don’t mean anything in the overall scheme of things. This team is NOT a playoff team. You see it when teams pick up their game Islanders can’t match the talent. For some reason Vancouver was asleep at the wheel because they should have manhandled the Islanders. I full expect the Isles to lose tomorrow.
Gordon is overrated as a coach. Isn’t “overspeed” just a gimmick for simply advising your players to hustle. We had Lavi and fired him because he “lost the team” = ran afoul of Milbury.
It is undisciplined and sets a bad example for Gordo to snap at Rob Carlin — it’s like bullying a harelip.
Billy Jaffe is the best thing about Islander broadcasts. Howie is annoying with his baseball fixation. I’d prefer Jiggs, to be honest. They better re-sign Jaffe.
its good when your coach hates losing, however that was a very fair question and gordon has got to show more class then that.plain and simple i never liked gordon …or snow …or wang and now i dont like gordon more.Accept responsibility gordon dont walk away like a coward that mentality will translate onto your team gordon has to go as do the other 2 clowns …and get rid of gervais pleaaaaaaaaase its so obvious by this point.I like our talent on offense we need a good enforcer to have their back and we need to sign 2 legitimate d men but get rid of this clown gordon you all saw his true colors on that very fair question, and this is the guy garth hired a gm who had no experience and he ofcourse makes a mistake on hiring gordon.Paul maurice or quennville would have showed a lot more class and i believe gordons “system”is a joke just like he is and im getting sick of losing and all those damn 3rd period meltdowns ENOUGH ALREADY SOMETHIN HAS TO BE DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Listen fellas, Gordo will learn from these mistakes and hopefully, some day, we will have a media source for our team that actually qualifies as media
Meet Bruno Gervais: 4 seasons/career minus 44(minus 45 now!). He’d be a call up for any other club, but for NYI he’s top four. Why? Because we traded Sutton! Either Garth Snow is an idiot, or he knows something we don’t.
Man selane can still being it. Such an exciting player the isles need someone like that. Created more offense in third period then any islander could create in a whole game this year..
It kills me that we have so many Gordon fans. What exactly has he done on an NHL level that would merit a contract and/or raise?
Sorry Gordan you have to stand up and be a man and answer the question. It is ridiculous that this team plays well for two periods and then all yr continue to blow leads in the third period. This is a reflection on the coach for not making adjustments.Great move to put Bruno in on first shift in OT he should be on the bench. How do we all see this but Gordan.
Give Gordon some credit for what the team had done this year. Team is still in the playoff race with 11 games left.
As far as walking out, what did you want him to say. should he publicly bash his players and GM.
Third period leads are blown because because the teams lacks size (especially on defense). The one good d-man with size they had was traded (knowing mac was lost for the year)and replaced with Reese. I think snow has done a good job rebuilding this team, but the failures of this team this season are his fault. Hopefully he is true to his word next season and adds 2 dmen (one to replace gervais), and some size up front. If he does this and Gordon can’t fix the 3rd period problems then Gordon should take the blame.
Be more interested in Sparky on the mic next year than Carlin. His interviewing skills are just awful, even Park appeared to want to slap him after the first. Gordon needs to answer that question. Simply put, we’d be sittin in much better boat if not for the impending 3rd period collapse. Dont have the exact number but I’m guessin fifteen at least. The team executed and got themselves in winning position so many times. Explain the root of this Jeckyll and Hyde bs Scott? I don’t want to hear youth, injuries, roster changes, road game blues, bad seafood…BS!!! Even a decent team would have finished that game and we were decent enough to run with them for 2. Good coaches see there players and system failing and take action, yet I saw the same non-physical panicked presence the entire 3rd??? AGAIN. Post interview just a reminder of the keep quiet philosophy that has trickled down. And show some accountabilty for christs sake. Bruno takes a penalty, momentum switch, they score, they tie it, and you send him out for the first shift of OT??? Take Freddy for that situation in a heartbeat. I have seen HIM hit the net and pass accordingly!
I can’t watch anymore bruno….I just can’t. Close his restaurant.
I was at the game tonight. I met over 30 islander fans personally and had a wonderful chat with all the expat fans. I had a good time……but you could see this one coming. CB, they were trying to set Selanne all night. They kept pushing his milestone on the scoreboard all night and the fans were on the edge of their seats all night long.
Why is our team the only one is sports where our coach and GM don’t have to answer tough questions? Carlin asked a completely fair question and everyone watching and commenting tonight was thinking the same thing. Bad job by Gordon. I’ve stuck up for him time and time again but the more he acts like he is 5 years old, the more doubt I have about him.
Um Jack Capuano for coach? me thinks yes.
I was there too, had no faith they would hold the kead. Entertaining, good to see the Isles live for the first time in 4 years.
Off to LA tomorrow.
The Islanders are now tied for the league lead with EIGHT multi-goal leads that have turned into losses. That doesn’t count the six other games they’ve won in OT or shootouts after blowing a lead of more than one goal. They have not won a game when trailing by more than one goal. The Isles have scored a league-low 40 goals in the third period (the 29th-ranked team has 49); their 78 GA are the fourth-highest total.
This year’s problem is nothing new. Isles gave up a league-high 111 goals in the third period last season and scored 63 (29th; Colorado had 55).
The Isles are actually plus-4 in goals for vs. goals against thru 2 periods — and MINUS-38 in the third. If my team were like this, I wouldn’t want to answer questions either.
Gordon may not want to answer to Rob Carlin (and kudos to Howie for the zinger and to NHL.com’s game story for mentioning the incident), but sooner or later he’s going to have to answer to Garth Snow and Charles Wang about why his team can’t hold leads.
Gervais was the goat in this one that’s for sure. He takes a penalty that gives anaheim a power play to make it a 4-3 game, they tie it near the end of regulation, and to top it off he turns it over and koivu goes in and wins it 14 seconds into OT. This guy is a joke. I see no upside in this guy on both sides of the puck. He’s on this team only cause of our depleted blueline. If not for that, he wouldn’t be in the league.
But I saw this coming about 100 miles away. And that stat of giving up 38 goals in the 3rd period this season is atrocious.
awful loss indeed, but getting 1 point in Anaheim is actually good. Not good regarding a top 3 pick. Rather had no points.
Either win it or lose it outright. None of this “loser’s point” malarkey.
Ted Nolan is still the second best coach in Islander’s team history.
I like and Snow and Gordon but when it gets a little tough for them they behave very insecurely…like a couple of spoiled brats.
But this is what you get when you know your jobs are more than safe in WangWorld. Such a bummer.
Very tough loss and extremely pertinet question ( A First!) asked by Carlin.
Go Isles!
-38 in the third period for the season doesn’t feel right. I think we gave that many up in the 3rd against Boston back in October.
from day 1 it has seemed that Gordon does not care for Carlin. I don’t have a problem w/it. CB was right in that he answered the question earlier in the interview. Something about Carlin has always rubbed me wrong, though my opinion matters lol.
Funny, 90% of the comments above are reactions that far exceed the imaturity of Gordon walking out on an interview.
Tough lose. I didn’t see it as a third period colapse like they had early in the year. Bruno Gervais had two bad decisions.
Turn the page, win tonight.
Man, I even asked the bartender to throw the game on at Mary Carols in Babylon and it was so exciting seeing them down then get back 2 - 2. Then in Huntington I caught the end of the 2nd period with the score 4 - 2 and realized JT and Okposo scored. Could you ask for more. Then my friend goes with 10 minutes left, we are leaving and the have this in the bag, no way, I am not leaving and its not in the bag. Mark my cursed words and I slam my fist on on the bar, startled a few people, took a shot and left upset, ruined my night from then for sure.
Hamonic will replace Brutal Gervais next season GUARANTEED!
Honestly this team is loaded with defensive prospects. Bruno and Meyer are in serious trouble! Hamonic, deHaan,Niemi,McDonald, Kohn, Katic , Kessel and in my opinion the best of them all is Donovan !
comment for 400
Ya know, the Isles are so off the grid as far as coverage in NY and as a result, Gordon isn’t under the same scrutiny as other coaches. For him to walk out is pretty lame, he basically gets a free ride. EVERY major NY team gets hammered with tough questions, why should he be angry that for ONCE, on the TV post game for a west coast game that likely has about 12 people watching, he had to field a tough but FAIR question??
He should have answered it and been angry after the camera was off. Not a big deal, move on, but really, it was a lame move.
There’s more to a team than just stats. Sure DP’s numbers were better than Rolo’s, but the timing was bad, and yes this team was disrupted, because they didn’t play with any confidences behind DP and rolo was taken out when he was on a hot streak. If you remember, it was mentioned by Katie and CB about lockerroom disseention about thaqt time. DP is out, and no such talk. Coincidence? I think not.
Great leadership Gordon- no wonder the Isles don’t show up in third periods…
gordon’s system is not sustainable for 3 periods, unless you can roll 4 competent lines all game long.players are gassed by third period.this team needs size across the board, wear down opposition.nielsen is a good defensive player, but how about a big, physical shutdown center?
Congrats, Rhett! Here is your 3 year entry level contract. Welcome to the Islanders! It is hard to believe he was drafted in the same year as Joensuu and Okposo. Heard he has some good wheels and passes well. Can’t wait to see him play. May have to check out the NCAA Tourny to watch him.
Can this organization PLEASE find a replacement for Bruno Gervais. He is awful. He was a 6th or 7th draft choice and plays like it night in and night out.
Gordon should answer the question. We all have a right to know why our team sucks in the final period. Next question should be, “Why do you separate Moulson and Tavares when there is some obvious chemistry?”
27Tonelli, your post is music to my ears!
352 I would put laviolette ahead of teddy but only by a nose…
If gordon was emotional he should have let it rip… The isles mantra seems to be that if you ignore todays problems and keep speaking of the future then todays problems don’t exist. Sorry but that doesn’t work in the real world Gordo.
Way to go Rob for asking the tough question. Carlin is in a tough spot. He needs to keep the good graces of the coaches/players so he can have access to the locker room. As the post game host, he can’t act like a typical reporter. Gordon has always struck me as having no personality. He needs to learn to trap in the 3rd period to hold leads. He is too stubborn to do it….or he is hoping to lose so we can get more horses.
Wang, Snow and Gordon act like they’re in the last days of the Nixon Administration.
Islanders can win an Olympic Contest in backwards skating…make sure they’re and being judged 40 minutes into the game.
Generally, Flat starts. Generally, Weak endings. Decent adjustments often for the 2nd Period. Not impressed by Gordon’s partial-game management plan.
i agree mostly with 299 and with 308. of course it was a bad play by bruno. but it never should have come to that. and overall, he’s been playing pretty well, getting the puck up ice quickly. everyone can see third period collapses are this team’s single biggest problem. either the coach’s system has them drained late in games, or they play too cautious with a lead, or both. to me, that points to the coach(s) more than the players. bruno is not THE reason they lost that game. 14-2 in the 3rd tells the story. in the old days ‘radar’ got really po’ed when they laid back with a lead too much and let teams back in. it drove him nuts. he said NO team can afford to do that, and they were maybe the best team of all time. i’m not sure though if the prob is more that, or an energy thing. it’s definately not all on gervais though.
This is a surprise?
Strategy:Try to get two goal cushion going into third. Then pray and ice puck alot.
If you want to walk away with a point. Start Bruno in OT
I turned off the set after the OT goal, but it sounds like Gordon needs a class in public relations. It’s not like they just lost game seven in the cup finals. I am sure he was upset with the loss, but any good PR coach should give him quick answers to get out of uncomfortable questions. Such as, “We are a young team, but with that said, I was still not happy with our play in the 3rd period. We need to learn to put our opponents away. If you excuse me now, we need to get on the bus to LA.” Interview over in 15 seconds!!
I still like Gordon as a coach considering the roster he has now. I think he has the Isles overachieving. Right now, our best D man is Freddy Meyer, does that tell you anything?
Gordon is the new DP as far as I can tell. Usually pretty sullen in the interviews. Someone needs to tell them to step it up. We know losing stinks, but you are all incredibly blessed and lucky to be a part of this game at this level. You are paid enormous salaries for your talent and hard work. Time to show some respect!!!!
For all their problems and issues, the Islanders are a playoff team THIS season if they added a solid defenseman and a scoring forward this past offseason like we all wanted. Leave Gordon as the coach and tinker with the lineup in the summer. Isles are gonna be at least 10-15 points better than last season.
This is really a non story, Gordon was frustrated, got mad and stormed off, big stinking deal. It happens. I’m not offended, I actually laughed. The Islanders blow late leads because 1) they are a young and inexperienced team still learning how to win 2) I think teams that have more talent then the Islanders often take them for granted, they get outworked and fall behind. The third period leads that evaporate are often a matter of the team w/ the superior talent level raising their effort and intensity to match that of the Isles, combine that w/ the inexperience of the Isles and… Lets focus on the positives cause there are many…Okposo, Tavares, Bailey, Neilson Comeau? holy crap Comeau may turn out to be a legit top 6 forward. Add in Petrov to that group of forwards and/or high draft pick. Things are definitely looking up. Just my 1.5 cents after taxes…
I am so glad I did not watch the 3rd period. I would rather the other team outscore the Isles 20-0 and dominate the entire game rather than have the opponent score in the third period with less than a minute left.
All I can say is “Flash” needs to really think before he acts. Any of the Great coaches that have Huge resumes to back them never walked away from the press in that fashion, especially when its your own guy. Gordie is a bush league coach, but with that being said I can’t blame him entirely for his attitude. Look at the group he has and the owner he has calling the shots. FACT: Wang calls the room and “reviews” the starting line-ups, part of the reasons Laviolette and Nolan left…
Well it was only a matter of time that Gordon was going to bolt one of Rob Carlin’s interviews.
and as far as gordon walking off the set. who cares? the man was seething inside. he looked silly, but he’s a good coach. and it’s the game that matters.
I would like to nominate Marty Biron as scapegoat. Soon as Anaheim pulled their goalie i knew they would score. I feel Marty is a good goalie but gets rattled in the clutch moments of a game. Also I am glad Gordo was pissed. The question just brought it out. He really does care about this team winning.
I would have LOVED to have been a fly on the wall in the locker room last night
Gordon bolting is not that big of a deal. It was yet another late game brutal loss. As far as the team goes, I agree with others in regards to Ricky disrupting this team. If he ever is 100% healthy and can handle the rigors of a full time goaltender again then he should play but he should stay away while we are still kind of in the hunt. This constant joining the team for a few weeks and then getting reinjured again is not doing anything except holding the Isles back.
Start Roli the rest of the way until we’re eliminated…I looked at the NHL Standing and we’re only 6 points out of a playoff spot. If the Rangers win vs Boston and we win, we cut the margain to four.
Happy that Gordon has some emotion? Sure. But bolting a reasonable post-game question is indefensible. Coach needs to grow a pair and learn to be able to handle questions in both good moments and bad. If, as CB guessed, Gordon was upset because HE THOUGHT he addressed the point in Carlin’s first question when describing how the Ducks came back, then that’s nonsense. All he did was describe how the Ducks scored 2 goals. How about actually answering the question - the 14-2 shot disparity in the 3rd justifies it plenty. No way the question was BS.
And, not only was it noted on NHL.com, but the entire interview was replayed and discussed on NHL Network’s On the Fly - a show which has been aired/repeated about 10 times now. That’s just more embarrassment for the organization, and, as such, Gordon’s apology is already late.
At least Gordon didn’t almost come to blows with Carlin like our cohorts Torts/Brooks did across town not too long ago. Look, Gordon is human and he had to be frustrated as heck at that moment. OR would any of us rather have a coach with no fire in their belly. Really, the guy deserves a pass once in a while.
Carlin has been awful all season, but would Gordon have walked out if anyone else asked the same question? I for one, am still waiting for an answer. Now that Gordo has slept on it, I hope he has the cahones to answer it on the air tonight. A more direct question from the fans is “why is your team so ill prepared for the third period in so many games?” a nice follow up would be “Now that you have addressed the awful PK unit, do you have plans to address the dreadful PP unit, or have you considered DECLINING the PP altogether since the opponent usually gains momentum after killing the penalty time after time?”
Wouldnt it be great if he stared into the camera and yelled…”YOU WANT THE TRUTH?>>>YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!” and then storm off camera. Now that would be fun to watch.
Gordon has got to grow up. Next thing you know he’ll be picking fights with Larry Brooks.
This team needs a strong finish, lead by consistent efforts from KO and JT. Okposo was back to being the beast last night, and Tavares is finding a way to put up points. Besides the playoffs, their goals should be 8-3 the rest of the way, JT tops all rookies in scoring, and they finish ahead of the Rag$
Bruno has got to go now.He single handedly lost this game for Isles.Biron was no better either. If he would have been able to freeze a couple of those pucks, maybe the end result is different.I do question Gordons personnel decisions.Horrible loss!I don’t care about the top 3 pick.I believe finnishing strong and maybe even making playoffs is a better end result. Here’s a question I would ask Gordo…If Frans is your best defensive player how come he is not utilized more in key defensive situations?Another beef I have is the timing of some of these penalties called against Isles and the lack of calls/non calls in their favor. It just seems like if they’re up by 1 or 2 the refs almost guarantee the other teams powerplays. Its a joke. What happened to the days of earning your PP!!
Gordon hated that question because 3rd period power-outages is a glaring sign of poor coaching. the team is not playing 60-65 minutes. not motivated at the right times and seems to run out of gas. after a few of these horrible 3rd periods a good coach would skate the team so hard the next practice they would never dream of phoning it in again. Al Arbour would tell them not even to bring their sticks out.
Carolina got the win today in Pittsburgh. Were in 27th right now. Florida is 1 point under us with 2 games more to go. We need the Kings to get us good tonight.
The fans that want this team to tank should be ashamed of themselves. Biron has 3 guys in front of him on the tying goal, trying to blame him for the loss makes you look ridiculous. You can thank the great GM Garth Snow for the brilliance that is Bruno Gervais. If he did what he was supposed to do last summer, ie. get defensive and/or offensive help the team might be in a playoff spot. I’m glad Gordon walked away from him, first he already answered it, and second it’s better than saying something he’ll regret.
CB - is the Chef the worst player in the NHL?
