the start of an era
-
Laptop needs some Flomax… the “P” was stuck.
-
…well if anything he has a cool name.
-
Nice. Just four more (Hamonic, Petrov, de Haan, and Ness) to go… and probably a few more that I forgot.
-
Can he play a few games on D?
-
RHETT-SKI THE JET-SKI!
-
Great news, I was hoping this would happen
-
This kid is projected as a third liner, but he may surprise you, We would all prefer a bigger forward but as long as he can skate and score 15-20 goals in a season, we will take it, especially on a third line..
-
Should I be happy about this? It’s hart to get psyched about a prospect that wasn’t good enough to be a first or second round pick and hasn’t played a single game in the AHL. Maybe he’ll work out, maybe he won’t, but until the Isles give me something to be happy about, I can’t get too worked up over this signing.
-
alright – finally a little good news…
-
Awesome news, very exciting to have him as part of the team.
-
He can have Jon Sim’s spot.
-
I’m glad to see this signing was easier than the spelling of his name to most of the fan base. I’m not knocking because my last name has been butchered my entire life; so I can only imagine what this guy has been through thus far.
On a serious note though; lets hope he is as successful as Hillen has been. I wish he were 6-4 & 220 though; as that is more of a need. I’m scratching my head as to how Snow add size and experience next year.
-
Good Luck Rhett, hope you have good health insurance
-
RHETT the THREAT!!
-
Was he was the one that decided not to turn pro at the beginning of the year so he could captain his team, or am I thinking of someone else? I liked that decision.
And I second “Rhett the Threat”.
-
Just what the team needs…another 3rd line winger….yaaaaaay
-
Even if he just makes the NHL as a 3rd liner that is a pleasure. He hasn’t been THAT high on everyone’s prospect radar. Just wish him the best and help the Bridge win some meaningful games. Maybe see him in a couple of years.
-
This should have been preceded by us signing Butler instead of Ottawa. We need help!!!!!!!!!
-
#17 it was rhett who decided to go back and become captain.
-
“Rakhshani will play in his first pro game at Arena at Harbor Yard on Saturday, March 3 at 7 p.m., when the Sound Tigers face-off against the Portland Pirates.” – directly from the isles website
apparently we will be traveling back in time to view his first game. this of course was done on purpose so that he has an advantage going in to the game.
-
lose out and spend some money. simple as that. good luck rhett, maybe he can be a better asset than some of the dead weight i hope they do not resign this offseason. last night was tough to take with all the rags fans at the barn
-
Congrats Rett … Rootin’ for ya!!
-
i hope he is better than 3rd line…I want to see him opposite wing of Okposo they dominated together on Team USA
-
#18 is right. We shouldnt be signing these 3rd liners. We should be signing Crosby’s and Ovechkin’s. At worst we should be signing Malkin’s.
I liked Rhett when he played at the WJC with Okposo. I hope the two could work well together again.
-
He looked good in WJC ’07… hopefully that will translate
-
Excellent!
-
Garth read my post! Knew he was a closet PB fan!
This kid has some good wheels and good sense of the game. Even he is a projected third line player, I’d rather see him play than Jon Sim or Richard Park. If Garth wants to go young, fine, but make sure the vets have some type of respectable resume. No offense to guys like Park and Sim, who play hard, but who would they be playing for if not the NYI? Probably nobody!
The guy is a Hobey Baker finalist which means he excels at the collegial level but doesn’t necessarily mean he will here, ie Tambellini. Yet, look at guy like Bozak on Toronto. He has done well this year. He is worth the risk. Hopefully, it works oout for us. His speed alone should help. We need it, badly!
-
he is projected to be a 3rd line winger?? why would this be worth even posting then? the Islanders whole team right now is 3rd and 4th line players.
-
Well if we do get a top 6 forward for the future in the draft, then we have 4 young ones in hall/seguin , tavares, okposo, and bailey. I would love if we could have a third line of nielsen, martin and rakhshani. Good chance that only either martin, rakhshani, or moulson have strong nhl careers then we have a solid youth core that could be built around.
P.S being at that game last night sucked, I was embarrassed by the applause for the rangers goals. -
Good to get Rakhshani signed. Now, six more key prospects I’d like to see get signed up for Bridgeport next year: Calvin de Haan, Travis Hamonic, Aaron Ness, Kirill Petrov, Kevin Poulin, and David Ullstrom.
-
Worthwhile signing, but don’t get too worked up about it. Rakhshani may or may not make the NHL. Nice character guy, though. Certainly better for the bottom six than what the Isles currently have out there, save Nielsen and possibly Bergenheim.
Bold prediction: the Islanders also sign Blake Kessel. Now THERE’S a guy who could get into some NHL games right away.
As for the Bobby Butler business, please. Don’t complain about a glut of third liners and clamor for him in the same breath. He looked like Jeff Tambellini against RIT.
-
Looking forward to seeing him play. Some more depth to the forward core.
-
Just saw this–great news. Rhett should lend some offensive pop, and a locker room can never pass up a character guy that stayed back to captain. Denver didn’t win the NCAA championships, but they were ranked around #1 all year and Rhett was their leading scorer (21-29-50 in 40 games). Let him get a taste now and then come back to compete in training camp.
Does this mean he made it to Bridgeport in time to be on the playoff roster? I’m not sure how that works.
-
hope he works out well. guess i won’t expect TOOOO much. but i’m hoping we get lucky with being pleasantly surprised like with Hillen and AMac.
-
This will get those season tickets renewed.
-
Whatever happened to that kid from Niagra that Snow said after signing was equal to having another first round pick?
-
how can this be a bad signing. give the kid a chance, he can’t do any worse than some of the other players the isles have given chances to, and atleast the kid will be a home grown islander. I am also kid of baffled some fans are already adding hall/seguin to the mix, way to many variables to know where the islanders will be selecting. A bottom 3 finish does not guarantee a top three pick, the bottom five teams can all move up three to 4 selections if there ping pong ball is pulled.
-
sweet!!!!!!
this was quick and painless, glad to see Snow jump all over this kid and get him into our system
-
Rhett could be a pretty good player. I watched him in a few games on the NHL network’s college game broadcasts. He has speed and a knack for being around the puck near the net. Best of all, if he makes the Isle’s he’ll help with keeping their team average height and weight under 6′ and 185 lbs
-
I have a good feeling about Rhett…he’s got a good relationship w/Okposo from their USA Hockey days and it takes something special to make it to this level coming out of SoCal…he’s a gamer.
-
Good Luck Rhett
-
#10? Rhett was finalist for Hobey Baker….basically he was top 10 player in NCAA this past year…..Plenty of players exceed the expectation of thier draft position….and plenty of first rounders are not worthy. This signing is similar to signing a top college free agent.
Real Question: When does Hamonic sign? -
Glad to see some of our draft picks are starting to actually make it to the AHL level. Good teams like the Crapitals were grooming their prospects in Hershey (AHL) for a couple years before they were promoted. Guys like Green, Morrisonn, Fleischmann, Fehr, were able to build confidence, become familiar with each other, and learn how to win before they were thrown to the wolves. And look at the Crapitals now. The Islanders need to get as many prospects as they can in Bridgeport so they can all play together. Why have a bunch of AHL journeymen on the team taking spots away from the young guys we’re trying to develop.
-
goodluck Rhett!
-
Career AHLer by all accounts. There is a reason he stayed in college for four years. The mention of the Islanders wanting him last year was to get him to Bridgeport, where he will spend his (ahem) career.
-
5-11, 185 AHL player. Why people are so happy?
He is definitely will not change my mind to not renew my ST -
have him play one or two this season….like Hillen did.
-
Career AHL’er by whose accounts? Yours? well you don’t have any credibility. I’m going to go out on a ledge and say you haven’t seen him play more than a game. And all your doing here is bringing the classic islander fan negativity when in reality you know nothing. Go cheer for the rags buddy so you can sign your big name fantasy players.
-
Hey, you never know….he’s Isles property, and we signed him. Move on…..
-
Just remember for all of those saying he will never account for anything. Playoff series are won by depth. You need to roll out 4 lines during the game. This way at the end you can double shift your star line(s). He has a good speed, good leadership, characterisitcs that make up a good NHLer. He cant do anything about his size, but a player willing to go back to college to be the captain, you will never have to worry about his work effort.
NOW SIGN HAMONIC!!!!
-
Rhett haven’t seen him play but I like what I’ve read about him so I am happy he is signed and hope he exceeds the 3rd line expectations. I am excited to see him play.

Great news! Hoe to see him in a few NHL games next year for sure.
