Our identity is Goaltending. Take a look at the Islanders website. We have 3 in the NHL 2 in Bridgeport and 6/8 in Juniors.

  7. avatar mschwarz8 says:

The best line in Newsday about the radio situation was by Chris Dey, “I wouldn’t say it’s perfect, but I think it’s a good situation…The feedback I have gotten has all been positive”.

Are you serious dude?! The radio broadcast is horrible! Why even bother having a radio feed when the signal breaks up 50 feet from Nassau Coliseum. What a joke! The clown committee rolls on.

  8. avatar dominla says:

i picture garth having some intern write up a report about what you wrote about him. i’m getting a nixon-esque feeling about this guy. petty, in-over-his head, paranoia.

  9. avatar billy says:

Hey CB, since i dont feel like paying 200 bucks for a online newspaper subscription from another country, can u or anybody else at least touch on the “problems” in the locker room?

I feel bad for Katie because she’s getting hooped because of the lack of coverage that can actually be read and followed.

Sooooo glad i didnt see the game last night, but am lookin forward to a big bounceback game against the bruins.

  10. avatar Donna says:

Great read, thanks CB for all the insights, details and humor, great coverage as always. The Islanders what a soap opera.

  11. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

That was a great chat…. good questions … and good answers … just sorry I couldn’t play along live.

  12. avatar Pete L says:

CB, great last line that sums up this organization perfectly!

Bill Torrey worked his fingers to the bone to put a first rate product out on the ice–even when he was paying cash at the team hotel! He was always a gentleman!

Hopefully the clown in Bill’s office now takes some time to reflect on the man who set the bar high as a professional and a gentleman.

  13. avatar Sheppy says:

Please…say no to Shawn Thornton. He is nothing more than Tim Jackman Part Deux. If the Islanders really want toughness, go for Boogaard. A lot of guys will say that Boogaard is a goon; they are right. However, he is at least a good skater as Jackman and hits HARD. He is the type of guy who will bring excitement back to the team. You want to talk about bringing some excitement back for a few bucks, he is it. Those guys who are against an enforcer will be FOR this guy after watching his impact on the team. Guys like to say that enforcers only fight enforcers so what is their use. Well, to them I say…how many times have you watched a game where a fight energized the team? If you are unaware of those times, you did not watch Islander hockey 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Yeah, times change…but the Islanders need to get tougher.

  14. avatar JKP on LI says:

If Smith had stayed GM, we wouldn’t have given that 15 year deal to DiPietro. Had that been a 5 year deal like Smith was going to do, we’d be in a position to cut the cord after next season.

  15. avatar Eastonhockey says:

Many things have become clear in islander country. #1 winning is not a top priority. Wang wanted milbury to stay then hires a backup goalie as gm who will be gm for 20 years. The coach? Come in last every year n keep your job. Dipietro? Give him half the starts if he wants them……snow was unqualified to begin with. Wangs hockey teams are the lowest in the NHL every year except for 3 years. Wang can’t run the isles succesfully. Time to sell to highest bidder. 20 years ago the Yankees had ten thousand fans a game. Get a owner who can win n turn the islanders into a succesful business

  16. avatar Candor says:

Sheppy- you are spot on. I say go out and get a true heavy–someone who scares the heck out of people and can hit. This sissy hockey is impossible to watch. We have no momentum turners.

  17. avatar Sal says:

great stuff as usual CB. Thanks. I sure hope you are still around when we get good again. Your blog is so good now so I can only imagine how good it would be when were are contenders.

  18. avatar steve says:

Awesome job as usual Chris. You really put your heart and soul into this even though you don’t get support sometimes. We fans are greatful for the job you do. I can’t imagine what being a fan would be like if PointBlank wasn’t here.

  19. avatar Sheppy says:

To the buys who doubt the importance of signing a guy like Boogaard I say watch how tough the other guys on the team get when they have Boogaard behind them. Guys like Comeau, Hunter, etc. will stick their noses where they are not currently. Even when they are losing, the Islanders will be more exciting. Man, I hate watching soft hockey. I used to hate to watch any game involving the Devils because of the trap. Islander hockey is damn-near as boring!

  20. avatar Sheppy says:

    Sorry…I meant “guys” not “buys.”

  21. avatar Isles316 says:

Thanks Chris. This is one place where I still feel proud to be an Isles fan. There are a group of people here who care as much about this team as any in sports. Lets hope we can all enjoy some success together

  22. avatar JT says:

Thanks Chris. Great chat today. Thanks for giving us 2 hours of your time. The personal attention you give us is one of the things that sets you apart from all the others.

  23. avatar mike 8 says:

Someone called this team the Softies last night. Sums it up pretty good I think.

  24. avatar Mike from Sarasota says:

Since 06-07 Boogaard has played 178 games. He has fought 37 times, and recorded zero goals, eight assists and 218 Hits.

Over that same span Thornton has played 243 games. Fought 58 times and recorded 13 goals, 23 assists and 329 hits.

Thornton is the more useful of the two, but personally I would pass on both. Both have plenty of mileage on them. I’d rather find someone fresher and hungrier from the minors like the Lightning and Senators did with Konopka and Carkner. Or someone just getting started in the pros like the Rangers when they brought in Orr or when the Bruins brought in Thornton 4 years ago.

The sad part is the Isles had just that player, Godard, and let him walk.

  25. avatar Doug says:

    CB,

The Islanders remind me of the Giants franchise in the 70′s. They made a lot of bad personnel decisions and couldn’t get out of their own way. When George Young was hired he turned the franchise around and the Super Bowl championships were soon to follow. Today, they have a very good GM in Jerry Reese. He knew he had to redo his defense after last years debacle. Today, he started the change by signing free agent Antrel Rolle.

The Islanders need to model themselves like the Giants and Yankees. They need to sign some free agents this summer (top 6 forward & top 4 defenseman)and draft wisely.

  26. avatar Islebethere4u says:

Cb, what will make the Islanders any different next year from this one? They refuse to sign the “big fish” when they really needed one, threw JT to the wolves and maybe hurt his developement by not protecting him the way they should have, gave away a horse in Sutton, wasted time with the goalie situation, unceremoniously sent Witt to the minors, and now for the first time we are hearing ugly things from the locker room since your investigative article Oct 20 2009, saying that everyone was behind the coach and all was right with the “plan”. What gives?

  27. avatar Sheppy says:

Mike…hit YOUTUBE with either DEREK BOOGAARD or SHAWN THORTON. See how many times each has won a fight. Thornton rarely wins. To me he is nothing more than Jackman. Find a guy who will win his share. No one said Boogaard was a good hockey player. However, for a guy his size, he is a pretty damn good skater for a guy his size as proven by his ability to get to the hit. HE IS NO MITCH FRITZ, which is what a lot of guys think because they are the same size. Watch the video or watch the game. Guys who can’t skate don’t hit well. He WRECKS guys! Watch it and report back to the guys who don’t know. He is well worth a spot on the 4th line. As I said above, even when the team is losing, he will get out there and keep the energy up. There is a reason that he has made it this long with an NHL club. He is not a slug. A lot of guys think he is, but he’s not. He would step in and be our best open ice hitter in addition to the best fighter ever on this team (sorry guys, even better as a FIGHTER than Gillies, Nystrom, Howatt, Baumgartner, Vukota, Cairns, Curran, etc.) How is that for an enforcer?!?

  28. avatar Pete L says:

Don’t forget that all the feedback Chris Dey has gotten on the radio situation has been positive, LOL.

If you have ever had to suffer through a game on the radio, make sure to contact the Isles and let them know that it is NOT a positive experience for the fans. Maybe that’ll wake Dey up!

  29. avatar Raymond says:

Booggard Martin wont be a bad 1,2 punch (no pun intended) with hose 2 guys we could get respect in any area in the nhl without anyone taking liberties on our top scorers(if you can even call them top scorers on this team) is love to destroy philli and have them with thier tails between thier legs. If you Cant beat em, BEAT EM. Bring up Martin, plus he can add affence in front of the net. Draft Fowler

  30. avatar Staten Islander says:

I’m coming to “lets buy him out” viewpoint as well. Even if DP becomes healthy again, with his health history, would anyone ever NOT have the thought that he might get hurt every time he goes down to make a save? Cutting him loose, even if he eventually got healthy again and played regularly and well elsewhere would be better for the long term health of the organization.

  31. avatar Mike Rubino says:

CB your comment about you and Garth careers going in two different directions, might you be aluding to a situation where you floated information from another organizational “source” that may have manipulated the market in a way that effected Garth’s mission?

  32. avatar hyedray says:

Garth is not perfect—no one is. But to suggest that he has done a bad job is a laugh. I would have rather seen him move the Parks, Sims and Tambellinis for 4th and 5th round picks just to allow space on the roster for Joensuu and Martin. Addition by subtraction. But the amnesia some fans have when making a comparison to Bill Torrey…please…….

If Torrey had been GM in a time with internet blogs and a rabid fanbase that demands instant success and news, he may not have been as loved. Lets be real here—Bill Torrey took 3 seasons to get the team to the playoffs. And that was in a time where there were fewer teams. The team was not a serious contender until 77-78 at best—which is 6 seasons. We are in year 2.

Lets step back, and put some perspective on this—big picture. Has the PR this week been a mistake—absolutely. But hardly cause to suggest Snow is a terrible GM. There will be more mistakes in the future, but if these are the worst of the errors, Im fine. Think about it—it could be worse. We could have made a deal which sent our entire future to Atlanta for a 25 game rental. MM would have made that trade.

  33. avatar Peter says:

Thank you Mr. Botta for all the team news you provide ! Cheers !
p.s. To Isles mgt. bring up Haley and Martin and add some sandpaper to the mix!

  34. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

I’m still laughing at Dey’s comments about the radio broadcasts. Last time I tried to listen to a game on my way home from work, Shakira kept on interupting. Hey Chris Dey, I hear she has some pretty good moves, any chance of signing her as a FA? She comes through much better than our simulcast.

  35. avatar LouD says:

#16 Lets at least be fair about the assesment of the coach. Saying he comes in “last every year” when he’s only completed one year with a teenage and 2nd tier veterans team is completely unfair. They will not be last this year so that will leave one year of coming in last place and under the circumstances surrounding him how can he possibly take the blame.

  36. avatar 50 in 50 says:

I was around for half of the session and must say I had to go when it apparently got really interesting. CB Thank You for telling it like it really is over there. I am so tired of reading watered down sugar coated versions of all the recent chaos in Islander Country. I have an idea who had loose lips with the media and I am sure he will no longer be an Islander by July.

  37. avatar edward says:

completely agree with #13 And #16 right on the nose get rid of these 2 clowns wang snow.plain and simple we need a owner who will turn the islanders into a successful profitable business and that starts with putting a winning team on the ice year after year a solid contender not the sorry laughingstock joke we have become.Snow what gives you the right to become so arrogant?what have you accomplished. You know damn well if the isles had any other owner you would be working at mcdonalds by now you pathetic clown

  38. avatar LouD says:

Lastly, 7 losses in a row where they scored only 9 goals and some crybaby in the locker room is blaming that on the goalie situation. It’s funny how when things go wrong it’s always the other guys fault.

  39. avatar 4theisles says:

I’m ready to resort to prayer after all its the weekend!

  40. avatar JD says:

I don’t know what to expect from this team anymore. A vanilla D, 3-4 potential top six forwards surrounded by a bunch of guys who belong in the AHL or another really bad team’s 4th line, and the constant goalie fiasco which obviously is affecting the whole team now. Call me crazy but I think the remaining die hard fans could still put up with this mess if Wang would have a definitive future for us (Nassau,Queens,or Brooklyn).

  41. avatar CIsle says:

JD, I’ll try answering your qeuestion for ya. What we can expect from this team is another lottery pick!:-)

  42. avatar Jim Clark says:

CB says that Wang would have kept Mad Mike even longer than he did? How did Wang become rich with poor personnel decisions like that?

  43. avatar Pete L says:

Wang got rich by being creative. Had nothing to do with personnel decisions. CA was the home of the 35 day month! He was lucky to get out when he did. Just ask Kumar!

  44. avatar dps says:

#43 , easy. He stole the money. Investigated for fraud. Cb don’t sweat garth blowing you off. Just wangs puppet.
