MILD INTEREST IN BERGENHEIM
Up to the Islanders if they want to cut the cord
11:30 am - Since this blog began, I’ve written countless times about Sean Bergenheim likely fulfilling whatever potential he has somewhere else. In his time here, there have been contract hassles (one cost him a season), benchings and wildly inconsistent play. He has often been the energizer on lines. He has been a top player at times, a guy who drives his coaches bonkers at others. Still just 26, Sean could be a highly effective third-line forward on a good team. There is interest around the league in Bergenheim and the Islanders are listening. Just don’t expect too much back.

At this point Im not worried about getting anything back. If Bob McKenzie is right and teams are interested in Biron, Bergenheim, and Park, Id just like to see them all traded and clear the way for a guy like Martin or Joensuu back into the lineup and let Rollie be our #1 the rest of the year.
He could be a good third line center for the Isles in 3 years. Keep him unless we someone really wants to pay up for him.
CUT HIM LOOSE. At 26, he’ll be 30 by the time he realizes any true potential
I wouldn’t cut the cord unless he was included in a bigger deal.. like to Chicago, etc. Dealing him for a pick does nothing but add another future-nobody and the chance at losing a healthy body for nobody.
I have seen enough of this 1st round bust. I will also drive him to Republic A/P if he needs me to.
get him out of town, the guy hasnt lived up to potential on the ice or shown any hint of doing it. he clearly has off ice issues also. get a 3rd for him and book it.
CB - nicely said as you have repeatedly about Sean. Everyone needs to forget that Bergie was a first round pick and realize he is what he is - a role playing 3rd line grinder who can toss in a few goals. If they can a 3rd rd pick or a prospect, do it!
Bye Bye Bergie! Maybe you can get your game and your head together some where else.
trade him and create a spot for Martin or Joensuu
Seidenberg to Bruins for Weller, Bitz and a 2nd round pick.
Let’s roll Garth! Get 1-2 guys who are a-potential prospects or good mid level vets, who will stick around for the next 1-2 years, while we finish the rebuild. Im getting too old to hope every year.
Seriously, would he really be missed? There are a lot of players on this team who would be useful to other teams. The sooner we clear those players out, the sooner we can move on with building this team. I have no complaints about Snow. He’s doing well so far.
Instead of trading Bergenheim straight up, as he has little value straight up, it would be nice to see him packaged along with Roloson or Biron in a bigger deal..
Finding a team that has interest in both Bergeinheim and one of our goalies is the hard part.
Having to follow his progress in another NHL city will be easier than following his progress in Frolunda. sigh. Garth knows best. If he has to pull the trigger — so be it.
To paraphrase the Broadway show, Bye Bye Bergie.
agree w/ potvinrocks. See if we could trade tambellini too. Throw him to his father, will his old man deny him too?
It sucks that the whole Bergie situation seems to have been poisoned from the start. Wish the Isles could hold onto him. He will be an excellent contributor.
A guy that hasn’t been mentioned much but I wouldn’t be surprised if he went today is Trent Hunter.
Let’s not just dump this guy for the sake of dumping him. If we are a good team in 2 or 3 years, he will be a valuable piece, even if it is on the third line and the PK.
should have traded him last year for a first round pick
It’s time to cut the cord IMHO
Bergen-who?
Everyone keeps asking to get rid of Bergy for Joensuu and Martin…who says they’re going to be any better? It’s like a never-ending circle of putting young guys in who don’t produce.
ward for a b level prospect and a 4th rounder… makes the sutton trade look real appropriate. nice.
Again Hunter has 3 years left on his contract, other than DP he and Streit are under contract longer than any other Islander
Chris Mc is right.
Move players out and get new blood into the lineup.
It’s time to throw away the season and get the best chance possible for Taylor Hall.
Carolina trades Aaron Ward to Anaheim for Justin Pogge and a draft pick.
in seeing Martin play a few games, he’s better than Bergie already. I’m not sold on JJ…
To all those who want to keep Bergie around for 2 or 3 more years and see if he improves. Why? 3rd line Players like him are always available. We have players in Bridgeport that could fill his spot in a heartbeat. Get what you can for him. You dont think we can find someone better in 2 or 3 years then Bergie? Bergie is nothing special.
I think this is the 3rd time the Canes’ have let Aaron Ward go by trade/Free agency.
I think it would be a huge mistake to just dump Bergy and get nothing in return. He is still young and brings grit to a team that sorely lacks toughness. WHY get rid of him?!?!? What is the point? We are waaaay under the cap and have maybe 5-6 guys on this roster that are true “keepers”. It just doesn’t make sense to me to give up on him.
Just like Sutton, I would not trade Bergie for a pick. This team should be in its last year of rebuilding. Why on earth do we keep acquiring 18 year olds?? Bergie is a good 3rd line player, a good penalty killer, and someone who energizes the team by playing hard and finishing his checks. It would be a mistake to get rid of him.
you forgot Bergie’s biggest attribute - he’s great at taking dumb penalties in the worst possible situations
is that the real reason he was out of the lineup last night??? I’d keep him around and get rid of sim other (oops.. some others)
Bergy and Sim are both energy guys, they are basically the same kind of player
Bergy is 6 years younger and in all honesty, Sim has been better
Either way if there is a market for Bergy and not Sim, than Bergy would more than likely be the one dealt.
I laugh when I see people here say, “I would rather keep this guy” or “Snow is an idiot cuz he could only get a 2nd rounder for Sutton.”
Guess that is why Snow is the GM lol, Sutton for a 2nd was really good considering the other deals for Dmen today.
Bag of pucks for Bergie…I’ll take it
I agree with Doug (Post 21). And I’m tired of all the Joensuu talk. Everyone here bashes Hunter and Joensuu looks like his Finnish clone…a big guy who can’t skate.
Get rid of Bergie and Park for a bag of pucks and let Tambellini get a crack at the lineup again.
Edmonton claims Ryan Jones on waivers from Nashville. All other players put on waivers cleared.
Salary dump. Bye bye Bergie.
With a questionable DP and no player offers why not keep Rollie since he is locked up for next year….that makes the most sense. With Biron likely leaving anything we get would be a plus. Time for Bergs,Tambs and maybe Hunter to move on. Let’s get the Martins and Joennsu’s up. There is really no negative impact with these moves.
Agreed, might be time to cut him loose and get back what you can.
No reason to trade him unless packaged for something bigger. A 3rd or 4th rd pick is not going to have a bigger upside than Bergie. He’ll end up being some other teams Moulson/Schremp type acquisition if we trade him.
I love Bergie’s attitude and hustle, but he still takes bad penalties and sometimes just looks out of place and out of position. He plays hard and I agree he can be a good NHLer but it doesn’t look like it will happen here.
If you take a player with your first round pick and then, before that player is 27, trade him for a third round pick, isn’t that like selling real estate at a loss? I think he’s been a disappointment as well, but it doesn’t sit right to receive a lower pick than what he was.
Anybody the Isles trade Bergy for would not have the potential that Bergenheim provides. Bergy is nopt turning into a succesful 1st round pick but he could and is a high energy banger who could score 15 goals a year. Bergy is still an above average skater and checker that needs to be left on a line to fulfill his potential. Martin and JJ are different sorts of players from Bergy.
On the one hand I really like Bergie. On the other hand, I don’t. He’s got a lot of energy, but he’s a total spaz out there. I won’t miss him.
I say again, everyone wants deals just for the sake of deals. Funny how everyone thinks there are all of these amazing players knocking on the door in B-port just waiting for spots to open up. The Sound Tigers are certainly not the Hershey Bears!
CB, thanks for the heads up but I don’t think anybody in Islander Country thought we were going to get anything for Sean Bergenheim! Maybe Montreal will give us a 2 1st rounders for him! They gave up a 2nf for Dom Moore.
im sorry, bergenheim is just another example of a swing and a miss by the islanders scouts. don’t get me wrong, he’s a great role player when healthy but not exactly first round material. we need a prospect back for him and not a pick.
It makes no sense to trade him. He is 26 years old and can be part of this team as it gets better. How many Cory Trivino’s do we need?
Not every first round pick is blue chip top 6 F /Top 4 D players. I recall reading Hockey News Draft Previews and sometimes guys taken after 10 are projected only to be 3rd liners. I wish Bergy had more upside but come to terms his role is that of an energizer with wheels. I wouldn’t be distraught if he was dealt but for a fair return. Otherwise at 25 what’s the downside of keeping him as your 3rd liner making a fair cap #?
hey, i’m all for it. We don’t need anymore 3rd liners, we have plenty… get rid of him, create some room on the roster for someone else. Anyone can provide energy and score 10 goals a year
Bergenheim may not have been great the past couple of weeks, but not sure if that warrants the sudden enthusiasm displayed here at shipping the guy away for nothing.
If he gets traded I’ll treat it with a neutral disposition — not the worst thing to happen, but he could put it together and make it look bad at some point. Also not sure why everyone’s hatin’ on Tambellini. His can has been glued to the bench all year. I think he stays and he’ll get a regular shift rest of the year after other guys are cleared out; then a decision will be made on Tambs in the offseason. What’s the rush to get rid of guys for nothing?
I think you need to keep bergy, he has the speed and grit. His age is the add bonus. I would only trade for another prospect in a similar situation, where both players need a change on scenery, how about take a shot at trying to land Peter Mueller
I like the way bergie plays when he shows up but he is not most popular guy in the locker room….
Who cares when he was drafted years ago by a different GM? If he’s an effective player that can fill multiple roles, why get rid of him? Not every single first round pick turns into a first line superstar - I mean, the guy was picked 22nd overall, not 1 or 2. He draws penalties, creates, kills penalties, works in the corners, has speed, and is not afraid to bang a little. That’s a good bottom 6 player not worth trading way for a 3rd round pick that’ll maybe also be a bottom 6 player years from now. If the goals come for Bergy, then that’s just an added bonus.
Any EC or AHL’ers out there that Gordo knows he could trade Bergie for? Someone who would fit the system?
Agree with post 54. Why deal the guy? He has youth, energy and has shown brief spurts of really “getting it” He’s playing “now” at the NHl level and has potential to play better. Any 3rd rouder is a longshot to see the NHL and ever reach Bergy’s level right now. I can see him involved as a part of a much bigger deal but straight up for a 3rd or 4th makles no sense to me.
lmao, another do nothing deadline. My god, boring. Going to class, not worth missing anything for this crap.
I would hold onto Bergenheim unless blown away (which won’t happen). Why, I don’t know. Sometimes he can be very good and that’s a start in trying to get to happen more often.
Carolina sends Scott Walker to Washington for 7th rd pick.
Phoenix sends Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter to Colorado for Wojtek Wolski.
DONT TRADE BERGENHEIM! He was a huge piece last yr & he is having a bad year. Gordon’s team/system is about SPEED. We have no size on this team & if we trade Bergie, we will have no Speed either. I know they want to make room for Martin & maybe Joensuu but the problem is keeping Schremp, Tambellini, Weight, Sim. Next year we probably won’t have Park either. Besides maybe adding Petrov to next yrs lineup, theres no other Forwards pushing to make the team. Weight, Sim, Tambellini are only on this team becuz of bad contracts that Snow can’t get rid of. Don’t make Bergenheim pay the price for someone elses bad contract! If we trade him, atleast get a 2nd rd pick back but my guess is we will get a 4th rd pick back. Not good enough!
Jersey Boy - We already found our pleasant suprise in Matt Moulson -doubt we can do that twice in a decade - let alone one season!
Wow the negativity in this room never surprises me.
So what if the Isles dont do anything at the deadline? That is fine by me this season. We have a decent young core and tons of cap space. We will make our moves over the summer, not now.
Dont be saddened if we don’t get much or even do a deal today; its not the end of the world.
Nothing like making a trade for the sake of making a trade…
When is our cap room ever going to be used as an asset? When are we going to be able to acquire our own Keith Hernandez type of player to lead our youths? Someone in their late 20’s just entering their prime (rather than Weight, who’s old enough to be some of these kids’ fathers)? Didn’t we lose a year of hockey so small market teams like the Islanders could compete in a salary cap world? Very frustrating.
Even if Bergie hasn’t lived up to his draft status that doesn’t mean you should give him up just to get something of lesser value. Picks are great if they turn into something, but will a fifth round pick turn out any better than what Bergenheim currently is or will be five years from now when the pick pans out?
To add to that, we now have 60 points and are only 1 point off of our entire total of 61 points from last season and we still have 19 games left.
How do people not see the improvement of this team? It is obvious, it is evident in every game that this team is better and more competitive than last years’ team.
I think people complain and demand trades just for their sake and do not truly look at the bigger picture. They think they can play GM and that it is as easy as playing some video game. This isn’t a video game, it is real life. Being an NHL GM is much harder than many on here believe.
Dont be too sure about making moves over the summer. Season ticket holders will not stand for the “ransom” that this owner is asking to re-up. As other teams are trading to improve, the Isles will get more draft picks. Why? Because as of now, draft picks are free until signed. A JOKE this franchise is
wolski for mueller
this is where i disagree. Bergie is a 2002 first round pick. he has speed, he hits, and can score. Inconsistency can be worked on. You cant teach Skills they guys has.
He is type of player that goes to another team and comes back to hunt you. Even Teemu Selanne said he has tons of untapped talent. So unlike Tambellini that has trouble taking his play to nhl level. Bergie can.
So to trade him for late pick is just working backwards. if he use as part of deal to land a big player then you can trade him.
But Realistically it will be years before Joenssu and Martin can play to Bergies ability. Martin and Joenssu have to be dominating the AHL before they can move to NHL. Both are not.
Bergenheim hasn’t had a point in his last 14 games. I’m not quite understanding the love on why we need to keep him. Where is he going to fit next year? This will open up a spot for Martin or Joensuu.
So far very boring day, all depth trades. Im surprised the caps arent making deals to match the Pens.
No one is going to give us a thing for Park, he wouldnt even be a fourth liner on 3/4 of the NHL teams, yes he is that bad. Why the Isles dont see that I dont know, but maybe has to deal with Charles being the owner?
Bergie should not be traded, he is the spark plug on this team and when given the correct assignment (first or second line) he ignites his linemates. Sorry Isles but this team has made a living of taking top two line forwards and turning them into grinders.
Botta, you need to stick to your guns when you commented on Murray getting a steal you were right, Snow screwed the Sutton situation up. He wanted more than a mid-2nd so he decided to wait and came out and said it, but then panicked and took the next deal when other D-men started to go and we end up with a very late if not last 2nd round pick. Why not trade Sutton plus our 4th for their earlier 2nd or even our 3rd plus Sutton for the first? Oh yeah, I know why, Snow and Charles with all their wisdom want to combine 6 picks to move up a handful of spots to pick someone they could of originally gotten if they stayed put at the original spot. DaHaan can be really good and it isnt a knock on the kid at all, he looked good at WJC until he got hurt, but all that wheeling and dealing didnt need to be done on draft day. Also, dont let me go on about the goalie drafting from last year…
Either way, who cares? Bergie needs a fresh start, he is what he is for us, he may be better for someone else. That’s life in the NHL. Next.
Well said by James (posts 63 and 67).
You hit it dead on.
#68 (MorDraftPicks), I couldn’t agree with you any less. Nothing wrong with obtaining a bevy of picks. Sorry if that’s too boring for you, but it’s how good teams are built.
Maybe package bergy with a pick or player to get a larger return
I guess Tamby will remain in Chateau BOW-WOW..
sorry for addl post CB -
Some of Detroits best impact players
Datsuyk (1998) Zettenberg(1999) Fippula (2002). Stop being so short sited. You are given up on Bergie drafted 2002 when we all have seen the level of skill he has.
Trust me, if you play joensuu and martin at NHL pace and you will see how the are both not NHL ready.
Do it we want picks!!!! Nothing is better then having a ton of picks going into the draft. If i was gm Park,Rolo,Bergy,Tamby,Suts and Gervais would all be gone for picks.
Keep Bergy is my opinion.
Does everyone realize that in the last 3 yrs, everyone we’ve traded or not signed has essentially done NADA with their new team (spare me Guerin/he quit on his team as the captain)…give Garth and his staff some credit.
Martin and Joensuu will have plenty of available spots to jump into if they earn it next year. Park, Sim, Tambellini, Weight and Jackman are all not coming back in all likelihood. Trading Bergy “to open up a spot” makes no sense. If there’s an actual hockey player…not a mid round pick…that Garth has had his eye on, and he moves Bergy and a second for that player, or whatever, that’d be more tolerable.
everyone requesting a bergenheim trade will be crying and blasting management when all we can get in return is a 5th-6th rounder. Keep him around if there is no solid value in return.
Don’t want bergie to go…yes he’s inconsistent, but he can be a good player and honestly, who on this team isn’t inconsistent. I don’t think the return that we would get for him would be equal to what he could be for us. Keep Bergie!!!
Halpern goes form TB to LA
If you haven’t noticed the islanders are not european centric.
They prefer north american players. I believe you trade bergie to a euro heavy roster, he will explode.
I think Snow should try to get from the LA Kings young goalie first rounder Johnathan Bernier who’s playing in the AHL right now and hes the best goalie.
we dont have room for any more goalies at this point. we will have enough trouble signing and finding playing time for nilsson, poulin, ridderwall on top of koskinen.
Time to start questioning our coach. Bergie gets scratched like Tambi has been for most of the year yet we have Park and Sim and Bruno out there everynight. Hope we keep Bergie, get rid of Sim, Park, a goalie and let Tambi go somewhere so he can score 30 goals a year and be appreciated by his coach
Always room for a goalie with potential. I’m enamored with Neuvirth on the Caps — kid is the real deal. I was hoping Snow would be able to pry him away, but looks like the Caps are being quiet today.

Canucks traded d-man Mathieu Schneider to the Coyotes
you always find room for a goalie talented like Bernier who’s a former first rounder..the young Isles goalies mention dont have the talent like Bernier have.
I like Bergy. He is an Isles problem.
Keep the man!
90: The oldest cop-out in the book. Coaching! The players are playing and tambellini not being “appreciated” has nothing to do with his inability to perform when given the opportunity. Schremp got just as much of a chance as Jeff and Robbie has responded, Tamby hasn’t.
Two nice pickups: Washington getting Eric Belanger for their late 2, Tampa getting PB reader favorite Purcell and a 3 for a slowing down Halpern…CB
I think the bashing of Park is ridiculous. He is a perfect 4th liner. Great PK and is relentless on the forecheck. On the Islanders his offensive futility sticks out, but on a real team he would fit perfectly. I think he plays all out for the Islanders.
Guys please Stop posting trades from other teams on this post.
We all have the internet and anyone who has done it can launch Tradecentre on TSN.ca/nhl or go to fanhouse and see the tradecentre there.
agreed ed. this fanbase seems to always expect too much out of 4th line role players. bates, hilbert, park, sim… they are who they are, nothing more
Some teams made some nice trades so far. I’m not too sure of dumping Bergie especially if we get diddly in return. I wish we could get excited about a trade or signing for once.
Hey gp34….has Bruno performed?
Did you say Youths? I think Joe Pesci is on the board.
This board is way too reactionary…earlier in the year everybody wanted to hang Tambi, then he scores like 5 goals in 6 games and then he becomes knighted. Now he’s a pariah again.
Same goes for Bergy. I’ll bet at the end of last season when he scored ~like 8 goals in the last 13 games not one of you dissed him.
When he’s unloaded for a mid-draft pick and becomes the John LeClair of the Flyers (not of the Habs) I’ll be interested to read the posts.
Bruno has been the biggest disappointment of the season. Awful on a nightly basis. If there were any other viable options on defense, Bruno would be sharing a press box with tamby. If we get any offer at all for Bruno before 3pm, I see no reason why Garth wouldn’t take it.
But why are we playing him. Witt is in Bridgeport, Kohn was available while Sutton was around. I would play almost anyone over Bruno. And Gordon has him killing penalties. He’s horrible
like bergi but hes gotta go but i would be suprised if snow made no moves until draft day where hes probably at his best. remember this is the Islanders were talking about. C.B is the man
*would not* be suprised
So….another boring day of no trades in islanders country on trade deadline day…ok just wanted to make sure, the hype was all bs as usual…
David, the trade deadline is at 3pm, not 208pm
Geez
the biggest disappointment on defense is not Bruno its Mark Streit this guy has not live up to what he did last year.
but hey its always only Bruno’s fault…ridiculous
David, what “hype” are you referring to? No one thought the Isles were going to make a big splash today.
Exactly. Thought Sutton would go for a 2 and maybe a sweetener. Roloson is in play. No one else of value. I missed the hype…CB
agreed WM, not sure what “hype” he is referring to lol
Frank, unfortunately business has a big impact on players status. Bruno on a one way contract is difficult to manuever. As far as Witt is concerned. He doesnt belong on an NHL roster. Addition by subtraction. wayyy too slow
No one else who is of more value traded as they are with the team.
Anyway I hope we keep Rollie, I really like him as our guy and with DP hurt, Rollie is even more valuable to us now
im sorry did someone just say that Bergie would become classic John LeClair?! If Bergie became Travis Green, people should cheer! Everyone needs to get a grip, we have a bunch of 3rd-4th liners right now minus JB, KO, JT…
Sorry for misusing “hype” but when I hear everyone saying the possibility of getting a number one pick and ladd or versteeg from the hawks, it sounds very appealing. When it all just seems to fade out of nowhere, its possible for a fan to get upset. thanks
Vesa Toskala is on the move again as the Anaheim Ducks have shipped him to the Calgary Flames in exchange for backup Curtis McElhinney.
hopefully we can get giroux or coburn for roloson since they have no first or second round picks. any chance that happens?
On TSN they talk about Roloson and how Chicago would be so much better in goal with Rolo and the way TSN panel talked about Rolo hes worth getting a young player from the Hawks not a 3rd round pick like some teams offered. I wouldnt be surprised to see Rolo end up in Washington.
I agree with dsb. would love to get Coburn.
Raffe Torres to Buffalo….another pick that never reached his potential, but he is still a decent player when he’s motivated.
Torres can join Connolly in B’Lo in the woulda, coulda, but didnt 1st rounders under MM.
Bergy has teased us with goal scoring spurts and I’m no sure we should give up on this kid…He has a tendency to fall into bad habits by taking bad penalties but when hes on hes really good…If Garth cant get anything for him then whats the point of giving up on him???I don’t see any upside in trading him for anything unless we get a BIG player with BIG potential…
