Weight out for season…Tavares steps up…Parking

by admin on March 12th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Chris Botta on Twitter

11:20 am: The Islanders have announced that captain Doug Weight is out for the remainder of the season. Weight, who will undergo surgery next week after playing hurt since his return in January, had one goal and 16 assists in 36 games this season.

*

John Tavares may only have one goal and one assist in the five games since the Olympic break, but his coach is pleased with the 2009 first overall pick.

“The improvement in John’s play since the break has been night and day,” said Scott Gordon. “Not everyone may see it, and the numbers may not bear it out, but I’ve seen a big difference. I’m very happy with the way he is competing and the way he has been getting to the puck.”

In the five games, Tavares has an even plus/minus rating while averaging over 17 minutes a game.

Short-term Goal: Asked what he’d like to see from his team in back-to-back games this week against the Devils and Maple Leafs, Gordon said, “You can ask me the same question after we get back from the road trip and I’ll probably give you the same answer. I just want to continue to get better as individuals and as a team.”

Try Nassau Community College: A report from a highly-reliable source on the invaluable fan message board Islandermania said that the Islanders – now in charge of the lot – are more than doubling the price of parking at the Coliseum next season to $15. Islandermania is the team’s official message board and no one on the team has shot down the report.

Early Friday I ran this report by a team source, who denied it but could not announce what the new price will be. Coliseum staffers are confirming that they have been told the price for general parking at the arena for hockey games will be $15. Islanders season subscribers will be offered a discount, but the price will still be a lot more than they are used to paying.

UPDATED at 10:15 am - Team sources continue to insist general parking will be raised to “more like $10 and $15 for VIP.”

We await official word from the Islanders, who now receive the revenue from parking after out-going County Executive Tom Suozzi brokered an eleventh-hour sublease to benefit the team.

If the price is indeed $15 to park at the Islanders’ legendary dump, here’s hoping fans take safety measures making the walk from nearby Nassau Community College. (Then again, don’t be surprised if the Islanders take measures to work with NCC to ensure that’s no longer an option). UPDATE: Readers have written in to report they have recently been nailed with expensive parking tickets at NCC.

Without question, the Islanders will be quick to point out the crazy cost of parking at Yankee Stadium and countless NHL rinks. Like comparing the Islanders to the Devils, however, this is apples and oranges.

Comments on this post and tonight’s game. Have a good week, everyone.

if it goes up to $15, I am happy i work at RXR. I refuse to pay that much to see a terrible team.

  2. avatar TradeUp says:

So long as watching from my couch doesn’t change, because that is where you will find me watching the games.

  3. avatar Doug says:

I have to pay $20 to see the Giants at Giants Stadium…

  4. avatar jb says:

::sniff:: ::sniff:: Smells like Howard Saffan is around :X

  5. avatar Jeff in Oyster Bay says:

Outrageous, do they want us to start paying by April 1st as well?

  6. avatar Eric Cup says:

This really smells bad to me. They have problems drawing flies to this place and now they may be doubling the parking fee? Sounds like they just don’t care what their own fans think. It’s as if they want us to stay away to give them a reason to leave. I can’t believe I’m saying that! The team finally gets the parking revenue it has never had before, and IT’S NOT ENOUGH??? This is a BAD sign folks. I have been the eternal optimist here for a long time, but this is not good!

  7. avatar Marc says:

Another reason to “park” your rear end at home and watch on tv.

  8. avatar Will C. says:

Wow. Makes you wonder how they make bush league decisions about the the team, but when it comes to charging the customer it’s top shelf pricing. Happy that I have a 58 inch TV and go to see them on the road a couple times a year from DE.

  9. avatar Dan says:

NCC is no good. I parked there for the hawks game and I got an 80 dollar ticket. The only good thing is the money I have saved by walking from NCC has more than paid it off.

  10. avatar Mike L says:

Just keep in mind that NCC does give a lot of tickets for not having a parking sticker. I like parking next to the Marriott. It’s $10, but you also get a $5 voucher for Champions. I may also be known to “drink the kool-aid”, but even I’m getting pretty fed up with the way this organization is treating its fans. I feel this has been a real problem the last couple of years and it’s only getting worse.

  11. avatar Nyichamp39 says:

Garth and Wang are going to love you after this article CB. Lol but in the end, yet again, you speaketh the truth. all hail the mighty Botta. I sure as hell won’t be parking at the coloseum now. For everyones info the marriot right behind the coliseum does parking as well. It was 10 bucks several years ago but I have no idea what it is going for now a days. I’m assuming it’s not more than the 15 the isles will be charging. And plus you can get out of the parking lot right away instead of waiting 30 minutes honking “let’s go islanders” after the islanders lose to the devils 8-0.

  12. avatar ItsGoodToBeRich says:

If they apply the extra money to top free agents next year, then I wouldn’t mind paying a couple of extra bucks once and a while.

  13. avatar admin says:

Charles owns the Marriott, too, so I don’t see that being an option. Please note the readers above talking about getting parking tickets at Nassau Community College. As I guessed, the Islanders have that covered, too.

Best hope is the price ends up not being $15…CB

  14. avatar isles316 says:

I know Wang has lost a ton owning the Islanders but no savvy or intelligent business man would more than double parking from one year to the next. Why would the Islanders (tick) off their entire fanbase? I don’t understand the logic. If you want to raise it to $8 or
$9 I could see that, but to raise season ticket prices and then double parking?!?!? Awful management.

  15. avatar Jay says:

Maybe they’ll bring back Niles to work the booths and laugh one by one in our faces.

  16. avatar Thomas says:

From what I understand the Breakaway Parking is “valued” at $15 with season ticket holders getting 10% off by paying up front and general parking will be $10. This was with a conversatin I had recently with one of the ticket reps..Either way it’s going up.

  17. avatar Danbury Islanders Fan says:

I decided to compare John Tavares rookie season with one of my favorite players Pieere Turgeon’s (drafted 1st overall 1987) rookie season. Turgeon had 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 76 games. Tavares to this point has 18 goals and 18 assists in 67 games. Just give it time and JT will become that top scorer we need.
(Let’s wait and see how much parking is going be next year before we all start complaining)

  18. avatar isles316 says:

So people that have free parking have to pay more for their tickets and then lay out $400 in parking!!! I didn’t have free parking with my tickets but all the guys that sit near me do. What a joke.

  19. avatar mtrico says:

Some of the things this team does really make you scratch your head.

  20. avatar Ajax says:

This just in … $15 to park … $20 to leave.

    Wang loves you!

  21. avatar Ethan K says:

15 dollars is just a couple dollars short of the tickets I was buying earlier this season (top row with student discount). I won’t pay that much for parking. Guess I won’t go to games… How disrespectful.

  22. avatar hockey8 says:

When and if Tavares becomes that top scorer who will be there to see it. Maybe it will be in KC or Brooklyn..
I know I am not renewing my season plan due to the price increase, now the parking and product on the ice. The parking issue put a bow in that for me!

  23. avatar IslesNation says:

If Scott Gordon believe JT’s game has changed day and night then I am really sorry for the bar he sets for his future star. Don’t get me wrong, I believe JT will one day be a great player for the Isles, but his game has been the same the last 25. He’s skating in quicksand and the slightest bit of contact knocks him down and off the puck. Just last game I counted 5 times he was sprawling on the ice, and I missed the first period!!! Why does the coach and GM even speak words when there is nothing but (expletive) coming out of their mouths.

CB, can us fans look forward to any good news coming in the next few days??????Weeks??Years?
It seemed that Garth read your blog enough to tick him off during the deadline, did he not read your 14 things the Isles can do to make us fans happy? No. 15- don’t jack up the parking prices more than double and treat fans like garbage!

  24. avatar Devon says:

Come on, guys. Parking is $20 at Yankee Stadium and $15 at Shea. I loved paying only $7, but are you really bitching about spending 8 more dollars when, presumably, a family of four is spending close to $200 on tickets, food, and maybe merchandise? Come on, don’t make this into a huge deal.

  25. avatar hockey8 says:

If they want to compare to Yankee Parking, at least they have a championship caliber team and organization regardless how they achieve it, plus most of the parking is not controlled by them. SO it is not apples to apples!

  26. Awful. The only way I’m okay with paying that parking is if all 14 things in that other article get taken care of. I really find it harder and harder to want to spend my $ on this team. I hope more games get shown in HD. Don’t want to listen to games, or spend good $ to go to them.
I see so many readers not renewing their season ticket packages. This is a sad state of affairs we’re in.

  27. avatar Fist of Gillies says:

I’ve been parking at NCC since the late 1980s. First I’ve heard of them actually giving tickets. The money wasnt the reason I parke there tho — it’s just faster getting out of Dodge that way. Getting stuck in that lot can be a nightmare.

  28. avatar OlTimeHockey says:

Heaven forbid the NYI only lose 15 mill a year as opposed to 20 mill.

  29. avatar Eric says:

John Tavares has started to play better. It started with about 5-6 games left to go before the break. Honestly, he is playing better now than the first 30 games where he scored 15 goals. Back then he wasnt creating opportunities, but he got luck with some goals, and it was the early part of the season that isn’t as physical, but other than the goals he was invisible. Now you feel him more on the ice. Hard to explain.

  30. just park in the hood and cross the turnpike. then it costs $0!

  31. avatar Scott says:

No playoffs, no going to games, no giving them money for parking or anything else.

Playoffs mean go to games, give them money for whatever they want.

The puck is in their court. Show us why we’re being asked to pay more. Don’t say that if you don’t, you won’t have the money for a winner unless you’re saying that if we give you the money and you fail, that you’ll give it back.

  32. avatar rb says:

Has Gordon ever spoken to Tavares about how the kid’s always looking up at the ceiling in frustration after getting stoned by a goaltender? That happens about once a game, for most of the year.

Somebody should pull Tavares aside and tell him to stop that. It’s immature. Bossy, Trotier, etc. didn’t do that. These are the best goaltenders in the world. Instead of showing frustration, redouble your work effort.

As for parking, it’s $35 across the street from the Rock. But I guess that’s worth it since you might find your car up on milk crates if you park too far away from the arena in beautiful downtown Newark.

  33. avatar MJS says:

After having gone to the two Islanders vs. Bruins games in Boston the past few seasons, I can say that $15 is really not that bad. Parking up in Boston for any game ranges between $20 and $35, so $15 isn’t that bad. It sucks that the price is going up for sure, but the team has got to do what it’s got to do to keep itself afloat. One thing I will say, though, is that given that the Islandermania crowd cites CB as the source of most of their information, I’m going to not believe any of the specifics here until I actually see it. I know that at least one or two Islanders employees post on there, but still, a lot of them don’t always know what they’re talking about, so no big deal until I see it on the team website, or show up to a game and have to shell out some more cash. Not to be too disparaging, but that’s like reporting that you overheard a rumor that someone was talking about that was told to them by their cousin who heard it from some guy that they had sixth period english with who heard it from his brother’s best friend, and subsequently expecting it to be credible. Like I said, I’d buy a price increase, but not the specifics.

  34. avatar Jim M says:

Mets,Yanks,Rangers(LIRR),Devils I don’t think you will find anything cheaper than 15bucks. $7.50 for the isles right now is a steal for anyone parking.

  35. avatar Mojo says:

@ rb. He’s a kid. For the most part he has been frustrated the last 30 games or so(lack of goal scoring). He’s showing EMOTION. I have no problem with that. It shows me he cares. I have no doubt next year he’s gonna be better. Get stronger JT. Look at Bailey. Leaps and bounds better this year. As always LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!!Die hard for life

  36. avatar Glenn says:

Will the security guards also be going out to the arena earlier? One of the nice things about getting to games early, generally before 5 PM, is being able to get into the lot before attendants are out there and parking at the game, in the arena lot, for $0.

  37. avatar teddy says:

#24 chill man hes 19 years old with the weight of a franchise on his back..

  38. avatar local25rooster says:

so next season isles fans flood the nearby streets to get cheap parking thus infuriating the residents and creating even more local resistence to the Lighthouse Project! F’ing Brilliant!!!

  39. avatar Jim Clark says:

For $15 they should have Jeff Tambellini and Rick DiPietro parking the cars for you. They aren’t going to be playing in 2010-11.

Since I’m paying $7 to park for 20 games looks like next year I’ll be going to 9 games to lower my costs.

Assuming Wang’s Lifesaver Project gets built, what will be the cost for parking when the remodeled Coliseum reopens in 2015? I’m sure it won’t go down from $15..just like I knew Gary Bettman was full of hot air when he imposed a lockout saying how much it hurt him and how ticket prices and salaries needed to be controlled.

  40. avatar EdTurner says:

You mean we can put a lousy team on the ice and SCREW them (to park) before they even get in the door to see the lousy team? Genius!

I guess they have that old P.T. Barnum quote up on the wall of the Islander offices.

    But wait, why stop there.

Want to watch the pre-game skate – $20

$10 is you want a clean seat (a ticket does not guaranty a clean seat)

Priority access to the bathroom – ten bucks.

A guaranty you will get back to your seat before the next period starts after you visit the concession stand – twenty bucks

You want to see your team win – sorry, we can’t offer you that.

  41. avatar isles fan-n-B's land says:

Parking …..whats that? you should be happy you have it and its ONLY 15 dollars !

  42. avatar Seth says:

You can always park at the old Fukudaya/No-tell Motel parking lot down the street on Hempstead Tpke and just walk over or carpool from there. That’s what we always did.

  43. avatar dose says:

“It’s as if they want us to stay away to give them a reason to leave.”

    hmmm.

  44. avatar Ajax says:

By the way … how much more “advertising wrap” can be put around NVMC? The Dolans must love the Fios ads.

  45. avatar CJCB says:

I can never figure out why fans get down on the core grp of young players? Its not there fault the team surrounded them with nobodys and gave them no toughness and guys who will provide them with the space these players need to be successful on the ice. We have 3-4 good young playes think about how easy that is to defend on top of that the leanest smallest least physical(took Sutton 3 yrs to provide a hit) grp of Dman ever iced by an NHL team, and all we can do is fault Tavres? Thank god Lax is stating up, fast becoming my 3rd favorite sport behind Football and Baseball!!

  46. avatar Billy-no-not-Jaffe says:

Tavares has to improve his shot.
When he does get chances, his weak shot is easily gobbled up. Most of the time, the goalies dont have to make a great save, just an ordinary stop. JT does not pick corners or elevate the puck, he almost always shoots into the pads.

  47. avatar Ben says:

rb #24 -JT looking up every game this year – last year for him half of those would have been in. Add that half to what he already has and his #’s are phenominal. So, given his past history, of course he is a bit frustrated.

He wants to contribute and almost every game he gets at least one top quality chance to score.

JT has always been that top player where ever he’s played. I really don’t that now that he is in the NHL he is going to sit back and think he’s made it.

I expect JT to improve on many facets of his game. it will be interesting to see what he shows us next season.

By the way, is this the first losing season ever for the new players on the team? As competitors you can bet they will want to change that!

  48. avatar John from ATL says:

When I was a season ticket holder I always parked at the College. At least now the money goes to the team and not MSG. Parking at the NVMC and paying the increased price could be a way for fans to show their support to the team and owner who is losing $20-$25 Million a year to keep the team on Long Island. Not that a large % of the LI residence care. Wang’s not perfect but, he’s all we’ve got. Parking at any Pro-team facility is too high. Why should the Islanders be the exception.

  49. avatar Ben says:

I’m trying to better understand why JT just doesn’t look like the player he was at the beginning of the season. Many posts here have offered the suggestion that he is playing hurt.

However, I think I have found in my mind a reasonable explanation that I can accept for this season.

If any of you have played sports in high school – lets stick with Fall sports – then hear me out.

As a former athlete and now coach, I equate JT’s situation to being similar to kids in 9th and 10th grade making the varsity team. Sure they impress early on, but as the riggers of the season go on and the physicality becomes more of a factor the young players fade and the strength of the older juniors and seniors take over the pace and play.

JT is going against players who are professionals for many years, have the bodies to compete for the long haul and, I hate to say it, some have “enhanced themselves” by special means to help in their performance.

JT is a puppy this year, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he does going into next season and year three.

  50. avatar OhNoItsComeau57 says:

Wow. Thats pretty crazy. All I know is that if they jack up parking like that and are hiking season tickets they better spend on some decent FA this summer or they are going to disenfranchise alot of fans.

  51. avatar Radek says:

If they raise parking costs, they really need to buid a pedestrian bridge to NCC. With the masses already crossing the six lane highway to save 7 bucks, often with kids as young as three years old, there is a very dangerous situation brewing. These people are dodging speeding cars in six lanes in the dark of night. It is crazy.

  52. avatar JS43 says:

JT has been playing very well,I don’t think Gordo has gotten the most out of John…. Why doesn’t he just continue to play him with Okposo and Moulson???? His productivity would increase dramatically….As for the parking fee; paying $15.00 would be a joke….To start with,I certainly don’t like dealing with rude clowns in the parking booth….To pay $7.00 more, is just asking too much!

  53. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Is raising the parking that big of a deal? No. Is more than doubling the parking that big of a deal? YES. If they had gone up to $10 or $12 I don’t think it would have been too bad. But to more than double it? That is a bit much.

Now just spend more than the cap floor and put a team on the ice that is competitive for a FULL season. Then the $15 to park is much easier to digest.

  54. avatar Joey303 says:

Heres a deal – I have a van. Park in the home depot lot in East Meadow. At 6:40 every home game, Ill take up to 12 of you @3 bucks a head. So even a family of 4 can save. Pile on in….Ill even set the XM radio to NHL

  55. avatar Joey303 says:

And with the $11 profit, Ill be able to buy a beer

  56. avatar Brian in Centereach says:

I love how this team finds new and creative ways to piss it’s fan base off. Where is the money going? It’s obviously not going to the roster and the building. I heard a rumor – from a very reliable source – that Wang is using the money to start a new scouting program to sign top sumo wrestlers to play goal.

  57. avatar John says:

CB, I am the source who posted about the price increases. I’ve been in the Coliseum parking department for about 7 years now. Charles Wang has brought in a corporation called Standard Parking to handle the new operation and the much larger bundle of money made during every event at the Coliseum. What I don’t see mentioned here is that if you decide to take a limo or bus in that night, it will cost $75 to park it. That is not an assumption, it is fact. Supposedly you will have the option of purchasing a VIP pass that day for $20-$25 at the booth instead of pre-paying with the team. Personally, although the prices are among the league average, the drastic change makes it much harder to swallow, especially for most people today. I’d like to apologize from the parkers that we have to charge you that much, but under the Fourth Reich orders must be obeyed at all times without question.

  58. avatar Glen S says:

Raise the parking fee, Raise the CAP floor and spend some money then FAN’S wouldn’t care as much. Snow/Wang put a better product on the ice and the FAN’S will come. To possibly double the fee is a little to much, how about $ 10 this is money that you weren’t getting before the lease deal so don’t be greeding. Yes $ 7 dollar’s was/is probaly the cheapest in all of pro sport’s,except the LI DUCK’S there FREE to park.# 37 I agree 100%%%%.
    As always LETS GO ISLANDERS…..

  59. avatar Ialwa81 says:

If the Isles sign a real UFA or 2 over the summer and this team competes then the parking fee will be a minor annoyance and will not stop fans from coming out. However, if they continue with bringing in over the hill UFA’s and its another slow season then this will drive away more of the fanbase.

I hope this is a sign that they are making some real moves this summer.

  60. avatar Cuillzy says:

Any real hockey fan would notice JT has been playing harder over the most recent games.

either stay home…or take the train..

  63. avatar Tony F. says:

Mets, Yankees, Rangers, and Devils all have excellent public transportation options making parking a non issue, with the islanders you have no choice and they know it.

  64. avatar StevieL says:

    parking $15
    2 Beers, a pulled pork sandwich,and crackerjacks $31
An avg. ticket price in a stained broken seat, approx $75
Ownership doing everything in their power to screw and destroy whatever loyal fan base they have left of this once great franchise….Priceless!!

  65. avatar 50 in 50 says:

If I got my tickets for free and I got a gift card for Champions I might pay the $15 to park at the Nassau Mousoleum. If I had renewed my subscription, NO WAY would I pay $15 extra to see the product Wang ahs put on the ice…

  66. avatar Rich says:

it is strange that Wang a “true business man” cannot figure out that putting a better product on the ice is the best way to increase revenue.
    15,000 fans x $10 is > 6,000 fans x $15
Not to mention the increase in merchandise sold.
But instead we watch Weight, Park, Sim get key minutes on a “rebuilding” team… yeah stop shoveling the Snow.

  67. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

    You’ve all got it wrong!

The press release reads, “Isles sign Richard Park for $15″! :)

  68. avatar Michael says:

$15 is more than I currently pay for two game tickets. LOL.

  69. avatar Merrick says:

If you can charge $9 for a 16 oz. beer, I guess parking can go up to $15. And perhaps this is a part of the Go Green initiative, no media guides, no programs at the games, and now encouraging more carpooling!

However, this is simply another exclamation point on my non-renewal.

  70. avatar Themass says:

In the last month i’ve been to see the Sound Tigers and Islanders in Hershey and Islanders in phildelphia. The parking costs were $10 and $14. Take it easy people. $15 makes more sense then $7. Just appreciate the deal you have been getting for this long.

  71. avatar SCLI says:

$15? For Richard Park? I think we’re overpaying!

  72. avatar eastonhockey says:

With less and less fans..the price has to go up..because the few fans have to pay for the lost revenue from the people who don’t go any more. Many Long Islanders make well over 100K a year, the Islanders want every penny they can get from these folks…the other people? Not a priority. Its about the $$.

  73. avatar Bob says:

I am currently a season ticket holder, and what is being advertised to us( in an effort to get us to sign up for another year) is that the General Parking is going to $10 with the Breakaway Parking which this year was free to season ticket holders is going to $15 but the season ticket holders can buy for $495 a season pass to the Breakaway Parking, and there will be a comparable discount for general parking for next season.

  74. avatar SCLI says:

Merrick*** $9.00 for a Pint? Seriously? I’m glad I moved to SC. LOL

  75. avatar Diane says:

    Sham-Tav??

Ehhh, I’m not worried about him, yet. This is his “welcome to the NHL” year.

After the season ends he gets to take a breath and think about things. Next year I expect to see his training begin. I feel cautiously optimistic that with a combination of his own personal competitiveness and some real developmental training (this is the cautious part, hoping our coaching staff is competent), we will see him start to establish himself as a real NHL player.

I don’t doubt he has it in him.

  76. avatar Phil says:

Team reporting that Doug Weight will now miss the remainder of the year with shoulder injury

  77. avatar hockey8 says:

I bet Gordo still will not play Tamby!!!!
To bad Gordo doesn’t miss the remainder of the season due to inability to properly coach!!!

  78. avatar Diane says:

And by the way, let’s have a good game tonight boys, GO ISLANDERS!!!

(It does feels silly typing that [!] but as fans we need to support our boys, so…)

  79. avatar isles72 says:

between exhb games and future playoffs the isles only occupy 50 or so days a year out of 365

cant blame the isles for raising parking prices if there now in the ”arena” business now too .

I hate paying for parking when I’m essentially a guest in your home to view an event that I already paid for , but c’est la vie

  80. avatar admin says:

The Islanders have announced that captain Doug Weight is out for the remainder of the season. Weight, who will undergo shoulder surgery next week after playing hurt since his return in January, had one goal and 16 assists in 36 games this season…CB

It shouldn’t be raised at all!!! What’s next a $10.00 Hot Dog!!!
    Give us a break!!!

  85. avatar Mike in CT says:

Does Tambellini get to play now, or does Martin come up?

  86. avatar SCLI says:

hockey8 I sure hope so. He’s a waste of bench space. Hasnt that been obvious for the past 3 years?

  87. avatar StevieL says:

A “Weight” has just been lifted off the Isles! I would anticipate a retirement announcement next!
Doug Weight, A class act. Thanks for your efforts!
    Okposo , Captain!

  88. avatar jimmy says:

    give okie the ‘c’

  89. avatar RJTes says:

Wait a minute. I have been a season ticket holder for five of the last 6 seasons, and I never was offered free parking!!! Was I getting screwed? Why was this never offered to me?

  90. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

If the Isles do right by the fans and sign a decent player or two in the off season, and ice a good team that has a shot of winning every game—-I will pay $40 dollars for parking! If they continue this slow drawn out rebuild forever, no one will be at the games anyway.

  91. avatar pocketski says:

    Sorry Gordo but I disagree.
Tired of seeing JT spend half his time picking himself off the ice. Especially in the corners where he should be trying to control the puck and play.
This ain’t junior hockey . Guy’s got to work on his core strength big time if he wants to play with big boys

  92. avatar dose says:

obviously not every islander fan posts here, so i guess it’s questionable how representative a sampling this is. that said, i don’t recall this level of bittnerness and animosity by any new york fans for its own team in my lifetime. i realize it’s aimed at ownership/management not the players, but it’s pretty depressing.

  93. avatar Mikey says:

If surgery is successful, I think Dougie will return next year as the fourth line center. Darren Pang interviewed Doug on the Blues broadcast last week, and Doug said his legs feel great and he wants to come back. Recovery takes 6 months, so the Isles are timing this surgery to get Doug in training camp next year. I have no problem with this as long as he takes a paycut and is relegated to 13 minutes a night. We do not have any young players ready to fill that role anyway; Hopefully David Ullstrom will be able to fill that fourth line center role in 2011-2012 after a year of seasoning in Bridgeport.

  94. avatar Brian in Centereach says:

Dougie – you were a great player, I just wish you were on the Islanders long ago when you were in your prime. They better call up Martin!

  95. avatar stevedepot says:

CB, “apples and oranges”. That is exactly what I wrote in that thread on mania when reading some fellow fans poo-pooing the proposed increase. With Yankee Stadium and MSG you have owners that spend-spend-spend and regardless if you’re a fan or not, many fans ALSO have more prudent public transportation options for those venues. I feel honored that you share my opinion!!!

  96. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

Whether Weight wants to come back or not shouldn’t matter, his time has come and gone. Wonderful guy and obviously a great teammate, but it’s high time this team starts focusing on upgrading the talent level. On a side note, the Islanders (yes, the Islanders) figure prominently in this week’s episode of the HBO show “Life and Times of Tim.” Catch if you can.

  97. avatar Joe says:

Hope everything works out for Weight, he has been bad all year though. Hope Martin replaces him.

  98. avatar MSA says:

@92 Pretty funny when the character (they are mostly from NYC) says “You mean Long Island has a hockey team?

  99. avatar brooklyn george says:

I’ve gone to only 2 games this season and never missed one on t.v.. So if fans are now saying they will do the same and stay home and watch them because of prices, I would not be surprised if they pull the games off the t.v.. Nothing surprises me anymore!

  100. avatar Chris TMC says:

$10 parking and $15 for VIP is not a big deal at all.

  101. avatar isles fan in Mass. says:

15 bucks is cheap!!! bruins parking is 40 bucks in the garage…and 30 off-site..patriots-50 bucks!!!red sox 45 bucks!!! i cant believe people are complaining about paying 15 bucks to park!!!

  102. avatar Isles Revamped says:

You know it amazes me at the lack of respect by Isles fans when it comes to Doug Weight. Doug has been nothing but a true professional in an era where the greedy have thrived. He is probably the best Captain in the true sense of the word this team has had in the last 15 years. And yes I put him above Pecca because of the team around him. Yet people look at that he might be past his prime they fail to see that he has played the last two and hlaf months with some sort of shoulder tear and or separation. But he knew the team was in the midst of a playoff run and had a chance to make it. He put his personal needs aside like he has done for much of his career and put the goals of the team in the for front.

I truly appreciate what Doug has brought to the Islanders organization. I wish there were more players on this team with his credability, dedication and hardwork.
So instead of bitching about park which we all have no control over anyway. How about reflecting on what could be the of Captains career as an Islander.

This team always talks about character and bringing in the right people. Weight is an assest to a young team both on and off the ice. I hope Garth brings him back for another season.

    Thank you Doug.

  103. avatar isles fan in Mass. says:

seriously, Tambellini is a good ahl player…period. He has had his chances at the nhl level and has not delievered!! should have never signed him to a one way contract!!

  104. avatar JohnR says:

I have to say it seems as if some people don’t realize the going rates for parking and have been spoiled for too long now. I live in upstate NY and parking for the Albany River Rats is anywhere from ten to fifteen dollars if you don’t want to walk. Imagine my suprise as I pulled into the NVMC and they only wanted five dollars. That was three years ago and I was astonished at how cheap it was. Suck it up and pay. Yes the Yankess put a great product on the field but where do you think they get the money to do that?

  105. avatar SCLI says:

$50 to park? Just because fans in Boston are dumb enough to pay those prices doesnt mean that LI fans have to be just as dumb.

  106. avatar steve says:

Weight is only good at one thing, and that’s not as a checking 4th line center. He helps quarterback the Power (less) play. If Dougie would sign for around million or so, he should stay. It’s not like UFA’s are going to be knocking on our door.

The problem with this is that we will need to roll 4 lines in order to be successful and Weight isn’t a bottom six guy. Also, can Dougie stay healthy for a full season.

Say what you want, we have no one who controlls the puck and sees the ice as well on the PP, maybe except for Streit. It’s not like we have great prospects to play in his place.

  107. avatar gary9-19-22 says:

$15 is a crime, but the sports entertainemnt business in general is a crime.

I wouldn’t feel like I’m being bent over if Wang spends the $15/car on players!!!! At least then I can say I felt like he took me for dinner and dancing before taking advantage of me!!

  108. avatar Lorne says:

Doug Weight, you are a great person and leader, but it might be time to hang it up. Someone posted earlier, I hope the following players are gone next year. Park, Sim, Jackman, Hunter, Witt, I am on the fence about Tamby though.

  109. avatar Lorne says:

Do yourself a favor, do not park at NCC anymore, you need a permit to park there. They have had that rule for almost 3 years now. The one place I have been parking at has been the Omni parking lot, been parking there for the last couple years. So far no parking tickets.

  110. avatar dan says:

Well so long weight. It was good when you were here. On to bigger and better things now. LETS GO ISLANDERS

  111. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Park at Roosevelt Field Mall…everyone meet there and carpool and split the $15. Worked for me for years, never an issue if you have a group

  112. avatar dan says:

isles fan in mass. Its the fact that this revenue opens up to Wang and he increases it by more than 100% I won’t mind paying it if they sign some better defensive free agents and the team wins more than it losses.

  113. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Wang is at the point now were he does not care if people get mad when parking, tickets, foodor payment terms swing in his favor. I am sure he’s realized the only people left going to games are the diehards who will grumble but still show up.

Remember that hte next time he begs you to march for his palace. Lighthouse parking: $40

  114. avatar isles71 says:

Goodbye Dougie…thanks for everything!!!! And for parking, it is sad when it cost more to park your car than the price of the tickets the 4 people going to the game spent for thier tix on ebay!!!!

  115. avatar isles fan in Mass. says:

yeah but he has lost 200 million over the last 10 years…give it some time, they are rebuilding the right way..its one thing to say sign ufa’s, but they have to want to sign here in the first place!!

  116. avatar rpchief says:

What other professional team are you parking at for less then $20. Maybe in a lot that is is a mile away, but anything close is 20

  117. avatar Chris R says:

Why doesn’t Doug Weight announce his retirement instead?

  118. avatar dynasty23x4 says:

mikey- of course weights legs feel fresh, hes only played 36 games this year, and i dont remember seein him finish a check. thats a good way to stay fresh. as for the parking/tix price increases- its fine as long as the on-ice payroll increase by the same percentage.

  119. avatar Fred says:

Someone get out their sewing kit and put a C on Kyle’s jersey!

  120. avatar JayK says:

Here’s the question I have about parking. Why do they continue to give us that stupid little ticket that we all throw on the dashboard but which serves no particular purpose? What is the point?

  121. avatar Bill says:

It’s not like Doug Weight was preventing a more talented kid from being up with the big club. He brought a calmness and poise to the power play that our kids hopefully learned from. No need to be disrespectful to a guy who played whatever role the team needed him to. Best of luck in the future Doug.

  122. avatar mht says:

$15 parking for the crappy Islanders? No thanks;my 47″ HD TV,1000 watt surround sound system and supple black leather couch are far better. This team just does not get it.In 23 years since Pat Lafontaine’s Easter epic only in 1993 have we witnessed a playoff round victory. If a restaurant has bad food and service do you want to run back? If this team again stinks next season the coliseum may resemble the darkest days of the Milstein/Gluckstern era of 1999 when on any given night there were 2000 at most in attendance at the coliseum.

  123. avatar Kascycki's Krew says:

Boston, NYR, NJD, etc. the parking is very high— but there you have the option to pay ZERO dollars and take mass transit.

I went to a game in Anaheim recently and paid 15 bucks. I am going to the Isles game there on Friday.
    http://hockey.ballparks.com/NHL/NewYorkIslanders/index.htm

Above is link to ballparks.com – which lists NHL arenas too. Anyone who wants to do the research can find out what parking fees are nationwide

  124. avatar Ron says:

Are people honestly comparing the cost of parking in Manhattan around MSG and the Bronx around the Stadium (and in Boston, Chicago, etc.) with the acres of open space around the Mausoleum? I love this team but every day it becomes clearer that it needs to be somewhere else if we are ever going to get anywhere. Hopefully it will be Brooklyn…but don’t count on it.

  125. avatar dominla says:

papa wang is done coddling the fans… it’s like when a parent tells their 30 year old kid he has to start paying rent. free ride is over. here in LA parking is like 25 bucks at the staples center. but the plus is you can take the subway there… sorry… i mean metro… they hate it when you say subway.

  126. avatar Jersey Steve says:

$10 isn’t too bad if that is the case, but I already pay enough for tolls since I come from Jersey. It makes a night out at the game rather pricey when you count the ticket and concession prices.

  127. avatar MAD FAN says:

Wang sell the Islanders to Mikhail Prokhorov. He likes Hockey i would go to brooklyn to watch the islanders

  128. avatar Steve says:

I can understand Wang increasing parking around NVMC. However, for this team to succeed it should either in Brooklyn or Queens. I believe the best place for the Isles is in Queens. Mass transit, more will show up.

  129. avatar James says:

I go to NCC and I dont think the Islanders have anything to do with the parking tickers over there. It is a $80 ticket if you are there during the day with no sticker. Thats just how much the parking tickets are at the school. Thank god I have a sticker and I do get to park over there.
“Question”- what ever happened to getting there before 5:30 and it was free to park?

  130. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Glad Weight did the right thing in having his surgery and freeing up a roster spot for a healthy player. I admire his courage to play with those injuries, I doubt I would have but this is for the best and a healthy player will help the team more. Also, paves the way for Kyle to be named Captain.

I’d like to see JJ, Riechelcz, and Martin or Haley at least for Tor.

  131. avatar Islesrock says:

Good luck Doug. I think the Isles will resign him for one more year. It’s time to say good buy to Park, Sim, Bergy , Jackman, and maybe even Hunter.

  132. avatar The Pork Chop Express says:

I agree with you 124. You cannot compare Uniondale to the City or the Bronx. As for the meadowlands there are only 8-10 homes games so it is not as bad. If you want to raise the parking you better make sure you raise the talent on the team otherwise why should anyone throw away their hard earned money away if you don’t. The object is bring more fans in and not drive them away!!!

  133. Raising the parking costs as NVMC is simple greed. Before Wang starts raising costs of parking and tickets, try having a decent team on the ice. I’m not even asking for a consistent playoff contender, but a team that can at least be in the playoff hunt up until the end of the season.

  134. avatar MickeyBoy7 says:

Ladies & Gentlemen the problem with our team is not parking or beer prices. All major league teams gouge the fans that way. The problem is we are not a major league operation. From our GM to our scouts to our coaching staff right down to our players we are MINOR LEAGUE. Heck, just look at our radio broadcast. A disgrace. I’ve been around since the ’72 beginning and I’ve never been so down on our future. I know many of you want to believe in our “direction” but I’m sorry…I don’t see it. I’m depressed.

  135. avatar Jim from St James says:

Someone above mentioned that if you see a game VIA mass transit parking is free LOL from my house it would be 25 bucks forthe train to MSG…It’s what 10 to get into the average beach parking…

I’d gibe em 20 to park if they would just put in mre bathrooms

  136. avatar AJAX says:

I’m done talking about parking, lets talk about the GAME tonight.

    Devils – 6
    Isles – 2

    KO and Josh score
    (deflects off of Joshs leg)

  137. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

15 is abit out of hand. $10 is not craziest thing i have heard. They should have free parking for Full season ticket holders. that is another incentive to try to drive ticket sales.

Tavares i have no worries about. I think he might go on nice little streak with some goals. finish with over 20. a bit lower than i expect but again he is surround with any good set up guys and is the islanders only scoring threat.

  138. avatar dan says:

Kascycki’s Krew Even if there was metro transportation to the NVMC you would have to pay for it and it would be around 10-15 dollars. Just saying that you would have to take the cost of taking metro into account.

  139. avatar Matt says:

    Lorne 109,

I am a Nassau County Cop and i will be looking for your car in the omni parking lot. Thanks for the tip

  140. avatar MattyB says:

Yea we pay money to park at Yankee Stadium because its a championship team in a beautiful new stadium. Devils too… Parking should be free at the Colisium

  141. avatar IslesNation says:

I wish Mr. Weight best of luck. Another good player picked up by Snow well past his prime, and what I don’t understand that is boggling my mind is, if Weight has been injured since his return to the lineup, why the hell was Gordon giving him PP minutes for the last 3 months. It’s not like Weight has been a lifelong Islander and Gordon owes him something. Imagine how much better the PP could have been if there wasn’t an injured player on the point every minute of every powerplay the last 40 games, might have a slightly higher percentage.

  142. avatar EJ-1since40 says:

And the already torched relationship betweeen fans NOT sipping the Wang-Aid continues to further gain strength..

Open your eyes and close your wallets..

All hail the almighty CB is right!

  143. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

Good luck to a class act and future hall of famer. Great guy. I wouldnt mind having him back in some capacity after he retires whether as a coach or scout. Clearly knows how the game should be played. However, I’m hoping the Isles dont give him another 1 year deal. His day has come and gone. Its KO’s turn now.

  144. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

Weight, Schremp and MacDonald all lost for the season in the past couple weeks. Does any other team ever lose 3 players for the season in this short a span of time? Of course not. It’s almost too easy to chalk this up to bad luck, but I don’t know what else it could be.

  145. avatar Anthony says:

Be fair… Weight served his purpose here. He was Tavares’ baby-sitter this season. That helped…

  146. avatar joe says:

chris. greetings from Phoenix where parking for coyotes games is FREE!!! ticket prices aren’t bad either.

  147. avatar va says:

I really cannot believe some of the coments on this site. Fans complain about not being aggressive and overpaying UFA’s over the summer. Wang is losing a ton of money and has been extorted millions from the TOH. There would be fans in Hamilton, Kc and other venues that would not mind having a professional hockey team and would have no problem paying $15 to park. Wang is looking to make a buck now that some of the proceeds are his money. He is like no other owner of a professional franchise so fans need to expect this. Also if the team finally turns the corner in two years, fans will come to the games and pay the parking, regardless. No more crying please, either your a fan or not. Paying a couple dollars more for parking should not break you!

  148. avatar Marc says:

Four words: Name Kyle Okposo captain now!

  149. avatar dominla says:

Marc: that’s five words… oh isles fans… you never disappoint

  150. avatar Marc says:

Woops, I added “now” in the last second and didn’t change the first word! Oh well. Who do you root for, Dom?

  151. avatar Matt S. says:

at the rate of games i go to that means i’m paying 300.00$ to park. F that. i got a nice HDTV. sometimes Cablevision even puts islander games in HD, you know… when the Devils aren’t playing.

  152. avatar dominla says:

marc… i’m an isles fan. been one since 92 i think. good or bad i enjoy these knuckleheads. i also sympathize with an owner that’s been pretty much screwed since he got here. and i get a little blown away at all the negativity at times from what is probably a minority of the fan base… but i’ll give you a pass on the added word lol. i also get comfort from the great philosopher Mel Brooks… from Blazing Saddles… from Howard Johnson… and I quote “Y’know, Nietzsche says: “Out of chaos comes order.” … does anyone know what was said after that?

  153. avatar dedshark says:

all the more the reason to go at 3 oclock and not get charged with parking and tailgate lol

  154. avatar Dan says:

Thanks Doug Weight. At least he played instead of giving up back in November. the younger plays should learn something from that. Class act all around. Wish he would have come here when he was younger but what can you do. Good luck in the future!

  155. avatar Faye from Brooklyn says:

Am writing this on my iPhone as LIRR pulls into Garden City. In Hempstead, will take LI bus to Uniondale. (N71 or N72) and cross Hempstead Pkwy to get to Coliseum. I live in Brooklyn, and don’t drive. Have been coming to NVMC since ’84 this way (most of this time as season ticketholder).

  156. avatar Nick says:

I would glady pay the $15 if it meant that we reeled in some big name free agents to compliment the kids…however we all know that won’t happen AND the priced will go up AND we’ll end up paying more coin to watch the same disgracefuul team..what a rebuild Garth!

  157. avatar LouD says:

JT has DEFINTITELY stepped up his game since the break. I’m one of the guys who has been hard on him but I will give him credit when he deserves it. I’ve noticed him playing with more of a fire and also have seen some sick moves that have left defenders shaking their heads! He’s also stepped up his game defensively. I hope everyone that posts about him getting knocked down realizes he’s 19 years old playing with men. He didn’t have a proper offseason due to being a rookie and being drafted #1. He’s also had to deal with a condensed schedule for the first time in his life. Much like college football players coming out and having to play 16 games instead of 12. Way to go JT and keep up the good work, we’re ALL rooting for you!

  158. avatar LouD says:

It’s funny that Gordon was considered a good enough coach to be in the olympics to help coach some of the best players in the world but somehow to some of our fans he needs to go. It’s truly baffling to me.

  159. avatar Terry19 says:

are we really talking about parking for a full 2 days?

  160. avatar T-1 Sella says:

#159 read 148 and that’s exactly why we are talking about parking for two days….

  161. avatar Terry19 says:

Parking, Im talking about hockey and your talking about parking?

  162. avatar 4195mary says:

With hustlers like KO (captain?), Bergenheim, Streit, Martin, etc., guys like JT and Schremp will have to work hard to stay in the play next year. Lets face it, 19 yr. old guys can’t be blamed for slumps.I say anybody who criticizes JT this year is just wrong, and obviously forgets how awkward and difficult just fitting in can be at that age, let alone leading.

  163. avatar 4195mary says:

By the way, does the $15 include wash and wax?

  164. avatar Scott says:

I spoke to my season ticket rep and he told me that general parking will be raised to $10 and break away parking will be $15. As a season ticket holder we will no longer get free parking but will be able to purchase the full season parking pass at a discount ($325)

  165. avatar Chris Mc says:

I cant wait for this game to start so we stop talking about parking. I’m goingto call Jim Mora and get him to do a Parking?! rant

  166. avatar CJCB says:

LOL, Weight has been out all year who r they kidding??? The Skeleton crew, the Isles new nickname.

  167. avatar WM says:

Gervais with the great screen…wrong goalie, though!

  168. avatar John says:

163, I’m sure that is including your season ticket holder discount.

  169. avatar 2Bit says:

Bailey helping create some havoc. Looking good.

  170. avatar Bill says:

i’d keep meyer around….a cheap 6th dman who can skate and just lacks size wouldnt kill the team.

  171. avatar Bill says:

clarkson left his feet too…good thing bergie didnt get hit with all of that

  172. avatar orngfan says:

i have to agree with the fans saying that if they use the extra parking $$$ for free agents then i’m all for it. heck, add $1 to every hotdog or cotton candy and bring in two N H L defensemen!! i’ll sign up for that right now!

  173. avatar Brian in Centereach says:

    Bruno Gervais please go away.

  174. avatar 50 in 50 says:

Gillies sits on the bench with a 2 goal lead. Gordon double shifting guys to keep Gillies on the bench. That will lead to a tired 3rd period effort. He really is clueless. Play him or send him across the sound…

  175. avatar nhl fan says:

We have seen this kind of third period before. Just waiting for the next Islander penalty so the Devil’s can tie the game. It is disappointing to even have these thoughts.

  176. avatar eric says:

and there it is. good call.

  177. avatar nhl fan says:

Do you believe in miracles….well maybe a little over the top but a nice win….

  178. avatar Isles 420 says:

    Great win Great game!!!

now lets start losing again. i want a good pick

  179. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

not a good day for the SegFowGruKab watch. One more win and we hop from 27th to 24th…We need to stay in the lottery.

  180. avatar Diane says:

Wow I really thought they’d blow that lead. Good job boys!!!

  181. avatar JerseyIslander says:

See what happens when Weight isn’t out there? We win… Good game, loved the forechecking effort. But now the draft pick get’s lower… being an Isles fan is a double edged sword right now!

  182. avatar Staten Islander says:

NICE WIN! Jon Sim is the MAN!

  183. avatar geduffer says:

#154 – “Oh, blow it out your ass Howard”

The parking issue is just another sign of how disconnected this organization has become from its fanbase. It’s really stunning to see how hard they’ve worked to alienate even their most loyal fans, the ones who committed for two years knowing that they’d be crap these two years. I learned today that everyone around us in our section is bailing on next season as well. They’ll be playing games in front of 2000 people like in the bad old days.

  184. avatar geduffer says:

Sorry, I meant #152 for the Blazing Saddles quote. :D

  185. avatar 1972 means i'm old says:

Don’t fret. The Charlie and the Islanders are working on a new promo for 2010-11. All healthy scratches will be manning the toll booths and give you an autograph for the $15 you pay to park. And Richard Park will be the captain of this crew.

Seriously, it won’t affect me as a mere Manhattanite who can never get there from here, but it’s a slap in the face to those who remain loyal—and I respect you all deeply. Complain! Loud! Call them! Wake them up to economic reality! I do so with the Mets, usually about other matters. Sometimes it actually works.

  186. avatar Steven says:

I think Sim is an effort and effectiveness level above all the other “Let’s not resign them next year category”. Am I alone?
