RICK DiPIETRO (KNEE) OUT INDEFINITELY
NHL COLUMN: Trade Deadline, Olys, Brendan Burke

Chris Botta on Twitter

6:00 pm - In a minor deal in which both players will report to the AHL, the Islanders have traded Greg Moore to Columbus for defenseman Dylan Reese.

The 6-1, 200-pound Reese is a former seventh round pick of the Rangers who played four years at Harvard. He has 22 points in 51 games this season with the Syracuse Crunch.

Rick DiPietro’s surgically repaired left knee has some swelling. He is sidelined indefinitely.

After returning from a doctor’s appointment today, the goaltender did not seem alarmed. “It’s precautionary,” the goalie told a trio of reporters. “The tests were good. Everything looks great.”

DiPietro theorized that taking full practices over the last week after more than a week off the ice may have caused the swelling. He said he became concerned this morning when the knee felt sore before leaving for practice. “You fear the worst and hope for the best,” he said. “This is close to the best as possible.”

Other than his bout with the flu for four days before the Olympics, DiPietro has not missed a practice or game with the knee injury since his return on Jan. 6. He praised trainer Garrett Timms for reining him in and getting him to the doctor immediately. “You don’t want to turn something minor into something major,” said DiPietro, who has played eight games this season after returning on Jan. 6. “This is a big thing we’re battling back from here.”

Scott Gordon only learned of DiPietro’s condition this morning like the rest of us, and chose not to speculate what it all means for DiPietro and the team.

The view here is this should not change the Islanders’ approach at the trade deadline. If they can make a good deal for Dwayne Roloson, they should. Plenty of free agent goaltenders will be available on July 1.

Here is this week’s NHL Column for FanHouse, with plenty of material on the Islanders, the trade deadline, the Olympic break and my choice of Brendan Burke as this week’s hero.

*

Niclas Wallin, Dominic Moore and now Jordan Leopold have been traded for second round picks. My view is Andy Sutton is better and more valuable to a contender. Either way you look at it, a market value has been established.

*

Based on today’s 75-minute Islanders practice today at Iceworks, here are the probable lines out of the Olympic break:

Bailey – Tavares – Okposo

Moulson – Nielsen – Hunter*

Comeau – Schremp – Jackman

Bergenheim – Weight – Park

With Josh Bailey back, Matt Martin stays in Bridgeport…for now.

*Trent Hunter missed today with a quad strain but is expected to be available Tuesday to face Toews, Kane, Keith and the Blackhawks. Sim was in Hunter’s spot today, keeping Jeff Tambellini in his traditional role as the odd man very out.

Streit – Hillen

Sutton – MacDonald

Gervais – Meyer

With Jack Hillen ready to return, Dustin Kohn stays in Bridgeport.

Roloson

Biron

More to come.

What are the chances we sit Sutton if he isn’t moved before the game?

  2. avatar Brian G says:

    Trade (shopping) List :
    Sutton
    Roloson
    Biron
    Park
    Weight
    Tambellini
    Meyer
    Sim

  3. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Sorry but it is BS if Martin and JJ stay in Bridgeport. They outplayed several guys in the “projected” line up posted here so they won the jobs. Also, Martin and JJ were called up for size and toughness and the willingness to go to the net. Getting Jackman back doesn’t takec are of it. Martin has almost as many points (JJ too) in much fewer games and Jackman doens’t go to the net and isn’t a fighter.

I know trades can effect all this but it’s BS to play guys who don’t deserve it and don’t compete hard.

I hope to see Hunter, Jackman, Sim, Park, COmeau, Sutton, Biron, Roloson, Geravis, Meyer, Tambs traded by the deadline.

  4. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

Could Sutton really net a 1st-round pick? I still douobt it but I would consier a second-rounder.

  5. avatar thetruth says:

dp is having a “checkup.” he had the “flu” before the olympics…..anyone else smell something funny here.

  6. avatar Eric Nystrom says:

HAHA!! please retire DP!! you owe it to the organization! collect your millions for 15 years and be happy and healthy!

  7. avatar craig says:

what is really going on with DP. There is always something with him.

  8. Sure did enjoy Matt Martin playing for the big team (scored a goal for BP last weekend). Hopefully Hunter will be included in a trade and Martin will be brought back up for the rest of season. Hope Rolo and Sutton bring back some good value players.

  9. avatar Brian G says:

time to clear out this roster

  10. avatar ars9x says:

CB QUESTION:(if anyone reads this and has an opinion I’d like that too)

If DP cannot come back before the trade deadline will we still be trading either Marty or Roli? I know this has been the plan ever since Rick has been slated for a comeback but things aren’t looking so hot imo.

If we do trade either Marty or Roli, who be be the backup is there is no Rick? Thanks.

  11. nervous about these trades.
and i hope martin is back up here soon.
most excited for the return of bailey and hillen!!

  12. avatar nola says:

o no not more dp stuff i was sick of hearing about his health status before, i dont want to hear about it now, he is too much of a liability, should get rid dp

  13. avatar Jim Clark says:

Time for Garth Snow channel his inner Billy-Mays-pitchman style: “Step right up! Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup with a Richie Guerin we gave away! Canada won the gold with a Roberto Luongo that we gave away! USA tied the game on a gaol by Zach Parise that we decided wasn’t good enough for us! We don’t know how to identify talent so you know you’ll get a good player and we’ll draft poorly and not embarrass you! Step right up!”

Is Mr Wang putting pressure on the front office not to trade talent away because he hopes to make the playoffs and get some revenue from playoff games?

  14. avatar Park Must Go says:

Looking forward to a trade of DP… ship him, his arrogant attitude and his ridiculous contract out of here.

  15. avatar IslesRock says:

CB, any chance of getting back an NHL ready prospect for Sutton or does Snow stay with the picks as seems the norm for rental trades?

  16. avatar MorDraftPicks says:

Picks…..get more picks!! Then trade them for even more picks!!

  17. avatar Brian G says:

Enough with all of the picks – this team needs some top level prospects…

  18. avatar hale78 says:

to post 10 garth had nothing to do with parise and luongo…as for guerin the guy QUIT on us…and he did manage to somehow get a number 1 for comrie and campoli…cut snow some slack

  19. avatar Matt Brosseau says:

DP out “indefinitely with knee swelling” according to CB’s Twitter. So much potential, so little performance.

  20. avatar AJAX says:

Welp, back to the 2 goalie rotation

  21. avatar UIF says:

There are four forwards in the probable lineup that I’d rather see sit in favor of Tambelinni. That’s not an endorsement of Tambs as much as an indictment of the rest of the roster.

  22. avatar Nick says:

Great timing for ‘Ricky to be Ricky’. Limits our flexibility with regards to trading Roly or Biron.

  23. avatar fred says:

    Well Rolli, unpack your bags.

  24. avatar Jon says:

So much for trading Rollie. He is done! So sad!

  25. avatar thetruth says:

just checked botta’s twitter…my early suspicions were right….dp proved once again hes going to f us over at precisly the worst time….the words indefinetly should be changed to forever…now we cant trade roloson or biron

  26. avatar Devon says:

We can bring up Nathan Lawson if it means getting a top-flight prospect or 1st round pick.

  27. avatar mrlbem says:

Perhaps this (Ricky being hurt) makes a trade with Chicago more likely, with us taking back Huet and his contract.

  28. avatar Diane says:

The whole Sutton thing (poss. trade) bothers me because I don’t see any way we could get back “more” for him. We would get a prospect (who knows how prospect will do) or a #1 pick (who knows how pick will develop) but meanwhile our D is smaller which is exactly what most of us don’t want. So we screw ourselves. Now we would need 2 of “big skating mobile D men” to get ahead at all.

I realize Sutton may not be in our plan 3 years from now. And I know he’s not the best thing since sliced toast, skillwise. I realize he can be an important piece of another team’s playoff push. But I strongly feel he is just as important to the Isles’ hopes of developing into a contender within a few years.
Sorry, I’m not with you all on this. I hope he isn’t traded. I don’t think its smart.

  29. avatar John says:

Someone needs to take a bat and take care of Ricky permanently. Enough is enough. And the next 48 hours if the most important in Garth’s tenure yet. He has chips. Now maximize it.

  30. avatar Andre says:

Rick is done. He is going to have to retire. It is a shame. The franchise cant be held back by this guy. What happens to the Isles cap if he has to retire. Would he count for the next 12 years?

  31. avatar Marc says:

I’m not opposed to Garth trading Roloson & Biron if both yield reasonable returns. Obviously, Roloson has more value. Tank the rest of the season and get a top five pick, hopefully top three.

  32. avatar Islesfan in Vancouver says:

definitely feel bad for Rick. Snow looks a lot better for drafting a couple of young goaltenders last draft as well as signing roloson and biron. The real question is just how long Rick keeps trying to come back, and how long he continues to deal with setbacks like this before throwing in the towel. It’s apparent that he’s not able to move side to side like he used to but I still think if he could get healthy he’d be a solid netminder again. Whether or not he’ll ever be consistantly healthy is something that looks to be in doubt.

The worst of it is that if he ends up having to retire due to the injuries, that people will remember him for that instead of how solid he could be in net for us when healthy.

I sincerely hope he manages to make a full recovery and that this is something he can get past, but it’s starting to look like he’s not going to be able to shake this.

He’s still one of my favorite players and I wish him good luck.

  33. avatar IslanderFAN says:

I’m very sorry to hear about DP i guess its a sign for him its the end..to bad some fans have to make sarcastic disrespectful comments..oh well.

I guess goalie prospect Kevin Poulin (which hes having a great year) can start to think he could be the future number 1 goalie of the Islanders

  34. avatar AJAX says:

I hope this doesn’t change anything. I agree with Marc (31). Trade away.

  35. avatar Brian G says:

They should just trade Roloson and Biron – bottom line is this team isn’t going anywhere and they will just draft 2 more goalies at the draft anyway.

  36. avatar Park Must Go says:

Andre I couldnt agree more with you. DP is holding back the franchise as proven again today. Garth had a plan this year when he signed both Biron and Roloson. He was going to play and showcase these guys to hopefully move one by the deadline. DP screwed this up. I have no sympathy for him and his injuries anymore. Enough of the waiting game. The future is now and we can’t wait for DP to heal for this rebuild to take shape. GET HIM OUT NOW!!!

  37. avatar pete debenedetto says:

    Carey Price
    Christabol Huet

………smells like one comes this way.

  38. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

nice to see Bailey and Hillen back. When those two got hurt so begun the Isles Losing Streak. They are only few guys with Plus Rating on team. Interesting stats
Bailey 13G and team high +9 Rating. 17.3% shooting. I guess that why Gordon wants him to shoot more.
    Hillen is a plus +5.

I was all for isles making playoff push, but with losing streak, the deadline tomorrow its time to consider whats best for team longer term. Trade your guys that have value. Sutton and Roloson.

Guys, please stop saying trade Grevais, Tambellini, Sim, Meyer and Park. None have trade value. Maybe worth a bag of pucks each. I wish we really could.

Ricky D is hurt again. Has to be. Doctor, now appointment. whats next dentist?

  39. avatar Brian G says:

PS: this Franchise is not being held back by DP…if anything it is being held back by Wang

  40. avatar jimisles says:

This has got to be a joke. Rick has knee swelling. Just great. This should be entertaining to see how the Islanders answer these questions……lol.

Well now you can add goaltending to the list of shopping during the offseason.

  41. avatar Mike Rubino says:

Mr. Dipietro, maybe you should skip your workout and get off you feet? This guy seemss to me the type that is his own worst enemy, Full of pride who thinks he can push himself through these “set backs.”

Still don’t think it impacts our activities at the deadline. If the right deal is there you make it. This is why we have three goalies.

  42. avatar Gary9-19-22 says:

DP is not the goalie he was 3 years ago. It happens in sports. Buy out the contract and see if we can clear future cap room his contract eats up.

Dont let DP’s injury stop the trade with Chicago. Take on Huet’s contract and get the #1 and Beach or Versteeg. I’ll live with a goalie combo of Huet and Biron. Still one of the better tandems in the NHL and we have some additional talent. I know that cap wise we would have alot invested in goalies, but we have nothing but room under the cap for at least the next two years.

MR WANG!!!! Please lossen the purse strings and let Garth take on the additional salary. We need what Chicago has to offer… BADLY!!!

  43. avatar Schultz39 says:

Great timing Rick…..where’s Jeff Gilooly when you need him?

In all seriousness, if we win tomorrow night we’re 4 pts out. Don’t think we should be in firesale mode, but more in the mode to get value for our UFAs (Sutton) and maybe get some bargains

  44. avatar IslanderFAN says:

oh btw well said @32 Islander Fan in Vancouver about DP.

also the stats of goalie Kevin Poulin this year: 32 wins – 16 loss – 6 SO and a GAA of 2.09

  45. avatar JKP on LI says:

I’d be OK with trading a goalie for the right return. Looks like the 3 goalie rotation had some sense to it after all.

Agree that retirement is going to have to be a serious option here. This whole musical chairs goalie situation could have very well cost us some games because of the distraction factor. Imagine if this all happened two years in the future, and we were a legit contender. We can’t have this goaltending sideshow every single year because Rick’s knee can’t withstand an NHL schedule anymore.

  46. avatar Healy says:

I know you aren’t privy to the details of DP’s deal, but is there anything in there where he has to play a set number of games for him to count on the books? (to get paid and be counted against the cap). Yes it was dumb of Mr. Wang to sign this guy so long term but I really feel like he’s done. 2-3 games a year is ludicrous, is there anyway for the Islanders to cut their losses and move forward? I am a huge fan of DP and always quick to defend him (one of the few guys who moved to and loves Long Island), but I get the sense he will never be the same.

  47. avatar Chris TMC says:

I really cant believe some of the things people say. Its like they think about the situation, but not all of the way. Anyone complaining about them being cautious with Rick: Dont you realize that its a much bigger problem if they are NOT cautious? Why is that so tough to understand? Dont you people remember when they took the opposite approach? I cant believe that some actually preferred that.

  48. avatar islesfan08 says:

what a mess….at the end of this season tavares is gonna say to himself ’1 down, 2 to go’

  49. avatar goteamgo says:

i knew that flu story before the break was a lie.. the writing was all over the wall… they were hoping hed be ok and that would blow over, but now they got cuaght lieing about him having the flu when he was really injured.. you arent limping around after a 2 week break if he really had the flu.. BUSTED!

  50. avatar Brian G says:

this is the ONLY way they take back Huet:
    TO Chicago: G – Roloson & D – Witt
    for
    TO NYI: G-Huet, 2010 1st rd pick,
    LW – Beach, RW – Skille, D – Hendry

  51. avatar LetsGoIsles says:

Wait…DP’s hurt? When was he healthy?

  52. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

Is DP’s contract insured? If so, cut bait and collect the $$$. I feel badly for him, but enough is enough. NYI cannot continue to pin its future on his back.

Where’s Eric Fichaud when you need him? :)

  53. avatar Pez says:

I’m mad he’s injured buts it’s not his fault not like he wanted to get injured I feel bad for the guy he looked so happy and felt songood when he was playing and keeps getting these setbacks it sucks

  54. avatar MorDraftPicks says:

Im sorry……watching Luongo win the Gold, Parise score the tying goal, made me think how bad this franchise has been. The day Mad Mike traded away Luongo to draft DP instead of Heatley was the start of the curse.

  55. avatar jnew66 says:

how are people debating trading both Roloson and Biron when DP is once again on the mystery ailment list indefinitely ? who do they think is going to play goalie the next 6 weeks ? Chico, Smitty, Hrudey, Healy, Deb Placey ??????

  56. avatar Staten Islander says:

What are the buy out options for DP if it comes to that and what kind of cap hit are we looking at. And welcome back Hillen and Bailey, they were missed.

  57. avatar Harold C says:

    # 53,I agree and was thinking the same thing. I had to tell my 12 year old and his friend how Luongo was an Islander and they said “Why did they trade him, are they crazy?”

  58. avatar Metalcoconut says:

DP…you have to feel for the guy regardless of his disposition. You know he wants to compete and that he has the heart of a leader but it is looking like this is the end for him. Garth was right to draft 2 goalies last year.

However, I don’t think that changes anything regarding trading Rollie or Biron. If we get enough out of trade I am guessing that a it would be harder to argue not to trade him. It is a rebuilding squad and making the playoffs, which won’t happen regardless of what kind of run they have right now, would NOT be beneficial to this team. To fight that hard and then get beat in the first round is not gaining experience, it is demoralizing and superficial. I love the Isles but these ridiculous contracts have to come to an end.

Yashin, DP, who’s next…Tavares. He hasn’t even scored 25 goals yet. They need to ease up on the home run contracts and worry about the here and now. Please spare the fans the indignanty of another “good business contract” and start focusing on good hockey contracts.

Garth seems to be a wise GM with bad variables but he needs to put his foot down to these crazy deals.

  59. avatar dose says:

i doubt management or DP are too surprised by this development. all parties had good reason to play this out and that’s what they’ve done. the g.m.’s amassing a stable of goaltender prospects was a big hint. if this is the end, it’s pretty sad. for people to have such disdain for the guy is kind troubling.

  60. avatar Islesfan in Vancouver says:

watching the game yesterday, Luongo didn’t look impressive and instead looked like he was fighting nerves and the puck the entire game. Fortunately for Canada, they were able to restrict the USA to only a couple of long range shots in overtime, and scored a goal that Miller didn’t expect Crosby to shoot on. Luongo has had a history of choking in big games and almost did it again, I don’t believe he was a reason Canada won gold.

Parise on the other hand was outstanding all tournament and has shown again and again that he is clutch under pressure. Great player.

There’s a ton of things that Islanders fans look at and think, if only… Chara, Spezza, Gaborik, Heatley, Luongo, Jokinen, etc. The only thing we can do is watch the team move forward.

Rick has always been classy and has never made us look bad. The contract came from Wang and barring these horrific lingering injuries, it could have been a brilliant move. Sadly I don’t think we’ll ever get to see what Rick could have been.

While it’s frustrating for us as fans of this team to hear that he’s hurt again, I really hope we can look at the man himself, and think of the struggles he’s gone through and at least give him credit for how he’s carried himself and wish him the best of luck. He’s never done anything to dishonor the team, himself or to cause the fans to wish him ill will. The guy is a good Islander.

  61. avatar Blizzard says:

…well its getting to be that time again when we speculate on DP’s demise. However lets just remember we drafted how many goalies last year? Valiant effort DP. Cant see him ever holding up to the rigours of being a number 1 goalie in the NHL.

  62. avatar Frank nyc says:

Very Surprised that DP, the man that is being held together with paper clips, elmers glue and scotch tape is falling apart. Wierd. Didnt expect this at all. But really Garth knew this would happen. That is y he went on that goalie shopping spree last offseason. 2 second rounders and 2 free agents. If DP ever gets healthy everyone will be happy. If he doesnt, then we do have backup plans.

  63. avatar rb says:

Red Light Ricky’s injury shouldn’t affect a goalie trade at all. Who cares if he’s hurt? Bring up a scrub from Bridgeport to back up whichever goaltender doesn’t get traded.

And if Ricky is healthy enough to play, I say play him as many games as possible down the stretch. It’ll help guarantee a top three pick.

  64. avatar Harold C says:

re: Buying out DP’s contract, I believe we’re still counting cap space against Yashin’s buyout – I am no financial genius, but I doubt that Wang would carry cap hits against two players in concurrent fashion.

  65. avatar Mark P says:

Will Lawson be ready to be an NHL backup next year?
With the Big Fin and Poulin (hopefully) at Bridgeport next year a decision needs to be made on Poulin. I see no reason to NOT trade Roloson. When Biron is playing….bring up Munroe to back up….and get Lawson in a few games when sitting Biron.
Once people see the Blackhawks in action, we will all realize we are not a plyoff team…and keeping a 40 year goalie does not make sense.

  66. avatar Lorne says:

Post 60, I totally agree. There is just no way he will ever really be our number one goalie. I hope I am wrong, but we’ll see.

  67. avatar MJS says:

While it isn’t terribly surprising that DP’s suffered another “setback” I can’t really be upset with him. Why be mad that a hockey player is trying to play hockey? He’s not holding the team back, and no one wants to hold Rolly accountable for playing like dog poo after DP returned. Even if DiPietro needs to retire sometime soon, I hardly think that he’s somehow at fault, like he was trying to sink the team. He was an all-star before he was hurt and it even made sense for the team to try and get him back into playing shape since they had him under contract forever.

  68. avatar nightfly says:

dose/58 – agreed. Lots of 20/20 hindsight in here today.

When RDP signed his contract, he was a perfectly healthy guy, 24, an Olympian and a legit starting goalie with a bright future. Far from a bad idea, his contract became a staple around the league with many teams signing their young stars to eight-plus year deals. In the next two seasons he played 60+ games each, even after injuring himself at the All-Star Game in ’08.

This is a setback, it may be minor, maybe not. The team is well-covered if it is a big deal. But in no way is this DiPietro’s fault or the team’s fault. The contract only looks bad because the guy is injured; as long as he’s healthy and playing at a high level it’s a good deal in the salary cap world. I’m certain it also has insurance provisions should Rick be forced into early retirement, and the team can always petition for cap relief.

At this point, it’s precautionary. We don’t know anything for sure yet. He could be done; he could be back in a week; he could shut it down for the year and come back in October as good as ever.

  69. avatar Jim Clark says:

Let’s look at the bnrightside. If DP is injured again , then all those people who say the recent losing streak was because “DP upset the chemistry when he returned” can’t use that excuse now.

While Snow did not trade away Luongo and bypass Parise, those two events happened when the Islanders were owned by Wang, hence the “we” was used correctly.

  70. avatar Brian in VA says:

how do you get knee swelling when you haven’t played in like a month??? DP PLEASE HANG IT UP… You are done! Hockey is a joke anyways when you are an Isles fan…

  71. avatar islesfan999 says:

Trade Biron and Roloson and bring up a 6th string goalie. Trade Sutton, Hunter Sim also..Then we will get the #1 pick and get Hall!!

  72. avatar The new isles gm says:

    Agree with post #2.

This DP dobacle has to end. Aside from losing, our franchise goaltender can get out of bed without tweaking something at this point. The last game he played, he was getting laughed at for getting crunched into the boards because he came so far out to play the puck! again! This ends now…

  73. avatar Bill says:

DP hurts this team more than anything. The guy can’t stay healthy but is always on the verge of coming back before he shuts it down again, causing us to either make moves or hold back on making moves because of his status. If there is one position i think you need stability at, it is goaltending. our musical chair game of goaltenders the past few years has hurt us.

i can’t pretend i know how a buy out of a contract works, but i do think something like that needs to be considered with DP…he hurts this organization more than he helps it.

and as for keep trading for picks, i’ll probably get some heat for this, but i feel like we have been looking to the draft for prospects forever….i dont think the draft is the only way to build a successful team. being aggressive in FA combined with the draft helps. WE NEED PROVEN PLAYERS. i feel like too often on this message board we think that guys like de Haan and Harmonic are the second coming of Jesus on skates…

  74. avatar Paul says:

CB, if the Isles do trade Roli/Biron, and DiPi isn’t healthy, does this mean a potential call-up from one of the three goalies in Bridgeport? Or is Koskinen not back from surgery yet?

  75. avatar mLem says:

He got the knee swelling from playing after not playing for a few weeks. No one said he was completely rehabbed and ready to become a number 1 again…he was placed back on the NHL roster because they didn’t have any other options, he used his rehab starts in the AHL and had to either clear waivers or be stuck on the bench/pressbox. I wouldn’t be concerned with him clearing waivers down…but I believe he has to clear on the way back up too, which also means a team could claim him and we’d still be on the hook for half of his contract. As for the rest of this season, hopefully this really is just precautionary and he’ll be able to play this season and give us an idea of where we really stand in net.

  76. avatar hoguefanclub says:

I like Sutton a lot. But thats precisely the reason he is very marketable. There is no doubt in my mind that Sutton will return a 1st rounder from either the Caps, Chicago, Philly or maybe even the Devs. I wouldn’t take anything less than a Veersteg for Roli, but on the other hand I wouldn’t want to lose him for nothing.I hope these trades although not as high profile will benefit us as much as…say….2 trades that took place at once:rent Sutter and Brad Lauer
To Islanders: Adam Creighton and Steve Thomas

To Buffalo: Pat Lafontaine, Randy Wood, Randy Hillier, and future considerations
To Islanders: Pierre Turgeon, Uwe Krupp, Benoit Hogue and Dave McLlwain.
    …Those were the days.

  77. avatar JerseyBoy says:

Where’s Don Maloney when you need him?

  78. avatar Jersey Steve says:

If Snow can get good deals for our vets I say go for it. I would definitely trade Sutton and try to resign him in the off-season. He is the only one I’d want back though. I’d trade Roloson over Biron and I’d keep Hunter. I like him as a third liner and think he’ll find his game again.

  79. avatar Jersey Steve says:

It’s good to see Schremp flanked by some offensive players.

  80. avatar scottd says:

I have no problem with dealing Roloson and running with Biron the rest of the way. He (Biron) will be playing for his next contract, which is never a bad thing. And who knows, maybe he gets into a groove and the team gets going again, while at the same time turning Roloson into another young asset, be it a prospect or a pick.

  81. avatar JtorBust says:

I love DP and wish him nothing but the best but it looks like he will never be the goalie again that could carry a team. What are the provisions of his contract in regards to injury and only being able to play 3 games a year. The next 72 hours will make or break this franchise and Garth’s career.

  82. avatar ant says:

Dp hurt what a shock.Lets give Poulin a 15 yr contract also when he arrives. Why is Martin being kept in the minors are you kidding me.He gave this team size and toughness.Lets continue to play garbage upfront who have no future with us.Garth do us a favor and trade or release some of these players we all know who they are, and bring up martin and JJ.

  83. avatar Tim F. says:

When (if?) Ricky heals, will the headline read “DiPietro Returns Indefinitely”?

  84. avatar Bri on Li says:

Hey CB, I know Tambellini is not a recognized topic of discussion, but I wanted to know if you remembered any situations like this during your tenure with the Isles, when a player is “odd man very out,” and what it did to the player and the team. Thanks for the relentless updates.

  85. avatar What do you want me to do JAY? says:

I just want him to retire….he is not going to get better and only get worse…i really think its time they look into that option…..

  86. avatar scottd says:

Based on what I’m reading, there’s almost no chance that the overwhelming majority of the fans here are not going to be completely disappointed. We’re talking about possibly trading two players who might net a couple of second round picks (maybe a late-first if we’re lucky) and/or a good-not-great prospect. CB has never mentioned any interested in guys like Sim, Park, Weight, etc. He has never mentioned a team forking over a premier prospect for Andy Sutton. He’s talked mostly about second round picks. And yet somehow, it’s been decided that these next three days are going to make or break not only the GM’s career, but the entire future of the franchise. If that’s what your expectation level is, you may as well go ahead and start flipping out now because your expectation cannot possibly be met.

  87. avatar valentino says:

dump anyone with a market value….draft as high as you can for as long as you can while all this BS with the lighthouse project goes on. Hopefully by the time that is straightened out we should have enough top tier talent to ice a perennial contender wherever it is that they end up playing.

Forget 8th place. A top 3 pick is more important to the long term stability and marketability of this team.

  88. avatar mrlbem says:

Regarding DP blaming the injury on the “full practices” they had last week—just how many did they have? I know they had at least the first week of the Olympics off, when did they start it up again?

  89. avatar Scott VanVoorhees says:

I’m holding my breath for Ricky. I want him back and I want him to live up to his expectations. I want him to represent USA in the next olympics and I want him to bring home the cup. I want this story to end as an amazing come back from injury and something that will be discussed by hockey people for years to come, and I want him to do it with the Islanders.

  90. avatar valentino says:

Islander fans should draw a salary from the team or from the nhl because being a fan of this team is HARD WORK.

Its always something with this team !

  91. avatar rich says:

I like Park and Jackman’s dedication as much as the next fan but it makes no sense for a rebuilding team to play them over Matt Martin and Jeff Tambellini.

Who is driving to the game saying i can’t wait to see Park on the PK. But i bet a few say i can’t wait to see Martin lay down a nice body check. Give the fans something to show up for.

  92. avatar rpchief says:

How can you blame a guy for getting hurt. Leave the guy alone, don’t you think he’s more upset then we are. It’s his profession and what he’s always wanted to do. Think about how you “weekend warriors” felt when you could not play anymore. You probably felt and emptiness inside. I know I did. Do you really think this is what he wanted. IF it’s the end for DP, I for one give him a standing Ovation for his play with the Islanders. If more rehab or surgery is needed for him to come back so be it, but for the man I wish him the best.

  93. avatar (Sim)ple says:

I think I was spoiled the past 2 weeks rooting for an underdog team that actually wins.

  94. avatar Arbour Day says:

Did he really have the flu or was his knee bothering him?

  95. avatar Lee says:

Gimme Price over Huet…Price has a bigger upside since the league knows what Huet is and he does not set us up for the future!

  96. avatar CM says:

Always wish DP well. Less optimisitic for his future. Hope I’m proven wrong. You’d think with rest it would get better. Even during the rest period does an athlete ever take more than 2-3 days off from a workout. Keeping the knees limber should be a life long commitment.

  97. avatar mets jets isles says:

Remember the rags traded weight (just coming into his prime) for their cup run. That is what we need nhl ready prospects.

  98. avatar B-ri says:

Well… with DP out, there goes trading Biron or Roloson

  99. avatar pocketski says:

The DP era is long since gone. Guy is damaged goods.
My advice, come to a monetary settlement with him and lets move on. Thats life

  100. avatar PATRICK says:

DP IS DONE!!!! its sad to say it and u always hope for the best but its not looking good….

  101. avatar hockeytime says:

I will probably say this to someone by the years end. “DP was a great goaltender its just to bad his career was cut short by injuries. He battled back and I give him all the credit in the world for trying to compete again. Its just such a shame he couldn’t fulfill his potential.”

  102. avatar Brian says:

Remember when he was mentioned in the same breath as Lundqvist and Brodeur? I thought that was far fetched then, forget now.

  103. avatar stephen says:

DP wasn’t around when we were playing well. We will move on, even as fans we will get over him. It is a shame that we are angry with the player instead of being angry at the Mad one who made the stupid decision the day he was drafted.

  104. avatar Alfred says:

Definitely feel bad for the Islanders having gotten stuck with Rick and his burdensome contract.

Wang should do the right thing and increase the payroll to a respectable level.

  105. avatar Brendan says:

The latest farce in the comedy of errors that is the Islanders and Rick DiPietro. I do not have “disdain” for Rick, as apparently some of you do. I know that he is a competitor and he would be out on the ice if his health allowed. I DO, however, have a great deal of disdain for the management that signed him to perhaps the most ludicrous contract in the history of pro sports. Let’s ignore the fact that we got rid of Luongo (a player who has clearly had a MUCH better career) to make room for this guy. Fifteen years? Fifteen years?! OK, he was young and had promise. Sign him to five, eight, even 10 years. But 15?! The guy is completely unmovable. I think we can all see by now that he is an above average goaltender (NOTHING MORE) when he is healthy, which he never is. How many knee and hip surgeries has he had? It’s like he’s an old man! He will never win a Vezina. I’m sorry, but a goalie with a 15 year contract should be a Vezina contender year in and year out. Face the music: the man was offered the contract for MARKETING REASONS. Wang wanted a (pretty) face for his franchise. His situation is indicative of the foolishness that has surrounded this club for the better part of two decades. A question for Mr. Botta: is a buyout a possibility down the road?

  106. avatar miket239 says:

What?! Rick Dipietro has an injury issue? NO WAY?!!?

  107. avatar Lorne says:

Pretty amazing that after almost 10 years, DP never really became much except for a season and a half. Yes, it seems his career will be cut short by injuries. Remember what happened with Dan Blackburn of the Rangers, he had to retire at 22.

  108. avatar Staten Islander says:

I really wish that someone had grabbed Wang by the lapels when he brought this up and smacked him and screamed SNAP OUT OF IT!”

  109. avatar Lorne says:

I would not hold your breath on a buyout for DP. At least not in the short term.

  110. avatar JPinVA says:

$38M payroll. $3.2M bathing in Russian caviar, and $4.5M bathing in epson salts.
I didn’t really agree with the Yashin buyout, but I think a Ricky buyout works here. He would get $1M+ for 24 years… and there will be a chance that he’s still on the payroll when the Hamilton RIMShots win the cup in 2028.
No Martin or Joensuu… probably no Sutton. JT in a funk. Isles playing more for Fowler than Stanley… I can’t believe people are going to pay >$150/seat for that… they better get some cardboard cutouts for the lower bowl.

  111. avatar SneakyPete77 says:

What a bust! Always has been! We shouldn’t retire the #39, we should burn it.

Isles may be making a big move.

Care to comment, CB? Any tidbits?

  112. avatar Brother Rat says:

I love DP, but how can any Isles fan not greet the phrase combos of “everything looks great” and “sidelined indefinitely” with a wisecrack at this point?

Let’s see him get better. Let’s also see the Isles make the best trade they can.

CB, when are you going to comment on this weird, upcoming Darryl Strawberry promo?! Get a flash drive, meet Darryl?! Can the Isles plan a more random, head-shaking event?

  113. avatar SneakyPete77 says:

Kohn will be back in a flash. Sutton is heading west, soon.

  114. avatar Terry says:

This team is jinxed. If we have to keep DP’s salary just put him in BRP and hopefully he will retire, how many op’s can a knee take before it needs replacement.Just bring up the young guys and lets see what they have. Snow needs a big trade to help this team. No free agents will ever sign with this team when they are this screwed up.

  115. avatar GP says:

Great timing for the news on DP! we just got our STH renewal invoice… higher prices, less benefits, earlier time frame to renew AND interest charges on the payments. What lucky fans we are…

  116. avatar thepolishprince says:

Take Huet and his contract from Chicago as several before me have mentioned. Count this announcement as the last straw for me regarding DP. I so wanted him to be back in net healthy but it looks like it’s never going to happen.

  117. avatar Vas says:

    DP IS DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  118. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

THE PLAN: Trade Roloson for a LATE first round pick. Re-sign Marty Biron to a reasonable two year contract. Trade Sutton + (insert role player/underachieving prospect name here) in exchange for another LATE first round pick. Because that’s the best we are going to get. Next, trade one of those late first rounders and our second round pick to move into the 12-18 range. DRAFT G- Jack Campbell with mid first-rounder. Release DP from his contract/buy him out/get him off this team somehow. Finally, with Campbell under our belt as our future number 1, use Mikko Koskinen or Anders Nilsson as bargaining chips to complete future blockbuster trades in the future. Is being a GM really that hard?????

  119. avatar IslesInPA says:

on their own, Sutton and Roloson will land them 2nd rounders. AT MOST. Sutton, definitely, Roloson probably not.

  120. avatar battfist says:

Dnt worry Martin will be back after Wednesday.

Im with this group of Isles fans, something is fishy with DP and the “flu” and “now my knee hurts after practicing this week” His comeback this year has been a waste of time for us fans.

  121. avatar Diane says:

Thanks for the update about Ricky. Like the lighthouse issue, I am done caring about what happens with this guy any more.

I wish him well. I know how badly he wants to be part of the rebuild (from what he’s said in the past). We’ll see what happens.

  122. avatar Jim says:

Not to worry about the latest DP injury Garth has it covered. He will trade Sutton and Biron for some draft picks. Then he will use those picks along with our lottery pick, for not making the playoffs, to trade down in the draft so he can draft a goalie that’s three years away plus acquire some second round picks that he will use to trade up to draft another goalie in the first round that’s four years away and wasn’t expected to be drafted until the third round.

  123. avatar goteamgo says:

The dismantling of the disappointing Edmonton Oilers looks to be underway. The club has dealt defenceman Denis Grebeshkov to the Nashville Predators for a second round draft pick in 2010.

hmm dmen for 2nd rders sure seem popular…

(we got bergeron and a 3rd rder for him when we traded for him)

  124. avatar billy says:

CB, what could indefinitely mean this time, considering those quotes that ricky didnt seem that worried. As if he had the “flu” before the break. dammit ricky stay healthy!!!!!! haha

why not bring huet in and dump biron and rollie. Huet and Ricky are a great pair in my mind, huet would be an awesome backup and we have tons of money not being used anyway.

i hope after like 2 or 3 years now of different rumors that we finally land horcoff or better yet, try to get booth if a steal can be made.

  125. avatar hoser14 says:

Hey #52: Where’s Eric Fichaud when you need him?

At last look he was playing for the St. Georges CRS Express of the Quebec Fight League (aka the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH) back in 2008.

  126. avatar Chris Mc says:

86- Scottd, CB did state that there was ‘some’ interest in Park and Sim a few posts back. And nobody cares what we get for them as long as they’re gone and free up spots for Martin and Joensuu to return.

I agree though there are some ridiculous demands on this board. Especially the deal involving Witt to Chicago. They would NEVER take him. They are in cap hell and he still has another year on his contract. That’s the whole reason they so desperately want to unload Huet.

  127. avatar Chris Mc says:

oh and 97, they also traded Tony Amonte for Stephane Matteau and Brian Noonan. Can we get a Tony Amonte for Park and Sim lol

  128. avatar Jason says:

DiPietro is a tough one to figure out. Bostonians always seem to have these issues, as they are fickle and self-centered.

Brian Burke is a father and a human being before he’s a hockey person. I was saddened to learn about his son’s death. He gets full marks for toughing anything out. I wish that his team could have won the gold. One goal short is hearbreaking, but still a lot to be proud of. He put together a great team.

  129. avatar Jason says:

Andy Sutton is perfect for a cup contender, especially teams like Pittsburgh and Chicago who have a great deal of mobility on their blue line. If Comrie and Campolli are enough to fetch Dean McAmmond and a #1, Andy Sutton should be enough to fetch a #1 from one of the Cup contending teams. I say clean house and let’s have another strong draft before the proverbial poo poo hits the fan with a weak draft class in 2011.

  130. avatar admin says:

    A few random thoughts…

DiPietro did have the flu. I know he did and wrote about it. Those conspiracy theories can end. The Islanders didn’t start practicing today. (I just decided to come back today, lol). DiPietro practiced Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Unless Garth Snow gets creative and/or takes back salary, you’re probably looking at a 2 for Sutton. I would still trade Roloson in an instant for the right deal, but I doubt the Islanders will. It won’t have anything to do with Rick’s knee flaring up.

I’ve heard about season ticket prices going up and the team taking away some benefits. If true, not good. I’ll look into it, ask for an interview with the right person with the team and that will be a story for another day.

Niemi gets the start for Chicago on Tuesday.

Once again, the only players of value are Roloson and Sutton. There could be another move or two, but not where the team is going to get anything back.

    Thanks for checking in…CB

  131. avatar brian says:

Trading Sutton or Rolson is basically telling the fan base they are quitting on the season. It’s almost insulting IMO. The Islanders feel they can do this because they do not regard the fan base as demanding. In actually, they seem to regard the fan base as non entity.

  132. avatar Steve says:

I hope that the Isles don’t trade either Sutton or Roloson in the trade deadline. The guy I hope gets traded is Jeff Tambellini so that he can get another chance with another NHL club.

  133. avatar tom says:

its not insulting to trade roloson or sutton, its insulting to waste time trying to get 8th place then blasted out in the first round, you need patience when building or you end up like milbury with all you draft picks becoming hall of famers on other teams.

  134. avatar admin says:

Updates post at top. Non-news here…CB

In a minor deal in which both players will report to the AHL, the Islanders have traded Greg Moore to Columbus for defenseman Dylan Reese.

The 6-1, 200-pound Reese is a former seventh round pick of the Rangers who played four years at Harvard. He has 22 points in 51 games this season with the Syracuse Crunch.

  135. avatar jimmy says:

why would any one of our fans want to keep sutton or rolosson?? we need to keep building forgot about winning some of these which mean nothing and end up drafting # 8 or 9.. we need another top 3 pick!!!! trade anyone who get us picks prospects!!! snow do the right thingssss please

  136. avatar AJAX says:

    Dear Columbus,
Please send Dylan Reese wrapped in bubble wrap to prevent breakage.
    Thank you.

  137. avatar Paul says:

Does this depth d-man trade for Bridgeport mean that Dustin Kohn might be coming up for good soon?

  138. avatar UIF says:

Well, I’m one fan who wants to keep Sutton. Best checker we have, only player with size, best shot-blocker, adequate in the offensive zone…it’s just a lot to try and replace. The 28th overall pick in the draft won’t replace that, and neither will a middling prospect. If anything, we should be getting more players like him – competent vets on short-term contracts that can still actually play – at D and forward to take some of the pressure off of the young guns until they’re ready to shoulder the load. The kids now are asked to do way too much out there – rebuild or not.

  139. avatar Darren says:

Sutton should NOT be moved for a 2cnd rounder.Garth should demand prospect player in return period.Last year we gave Guerin away which was a joke.I would rather have kept him than watch him help Pitt to the cup and make no mistake he did help that team in a big way.So I would start the presedent now in that the days of taking advantage of this team are over for good.Same goes for any Roloson deal. We would rather do nothing than help another team have success for a lousy pick!I’m truly about ready to give up on this franchise.DP needs to retire and I do wish him the best.

  140. avatar 4theisles says:

I’m not an MD, but anyone who follows sport’s injuries knows that given his medical history, that this latest “set-back” is a very negative sign for his long term prognosis. I wish him the best, but I would assume that Isle’s mgmt, has to be realistically questioning his future with the team-that’s what they are paid to do.

  141. avatar Joe G says:

DP is done and has been done. His first night back when they came back from commercials he was crouched down wincing in pain. He never had the flu, let’s be realistic here.

  142. avatar 50 in 50 says:

Oh NO here we go again… It’s time to retire Rick. Let it go your body already has….

  143. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Carl Pavano on skates should fly down to St Lucie and get pink eye too…that will buy hum another 2 weeks of BS excuses
