SNOW WANTS A BETTER DEAL FOR SUTTON
Holding out for more than a 2 for valuable dman
Point Blank has learned that Garth Snow has offers from at least two known teams of second round picks for Andy Sutton. However, the Islanders general manager is holding out for more before Wednesday’s 3:00 pm deadline.
As we wrote back on Feb. 11, the comparable for a Sutton deal is Pittsburgh’s acquisition of big defenseman Hal Gill from Toronto at the trade deadline two years ago. Penguins GM Ray Shero paid the price of a second and a fifth round pick. Considering Sutton’s strong play this season and knowing the difference he could make for a contender, Snow hopes to acquire at least a second and an additional draft choice.
There is one danger in holding out too long. Just today, Denis Grebeshkov and Jordan Leopold were traded for second round selections. While waiting for fair value for Sutton, the general manager has to make his suitors don’t choose to fill their blueline needs elsewhere.
With more than 36 hours to go before the deadline, Snow is right to hold out for more.

I am not sure there will be much more than a 2 for Sutton. unless they can get a high 2 (Boston’s from Toronto), but i am not so sure Boston is buying.
-
Wise move at his point. It’s a sellers market with so many teams in the playoffs or on the bubble. Hold out until the price gets driven up high enough- worse case scenario he doesn’t get dealt then the Isles will have his services for the playoff push (albeit slim) for the stretch drive. For a team with so much youth, having that experience wouldn’t be the worst thing even at the expense of not getting the draft pick.
-
Even though we as Islander fans know that Sutton is worth more than a 2nd, Snow isn’t going to get many offers significantly better than that for him. Maybe a 2nd and a mid-level prospect, which we have in spades, or something like a 2nd and a 4th, or at best a 3rd. I think the only real high return that would come back should we ship Suts would be if Roloson were to accompany him, because that would really solidify the defensive end of a playoff team.
-
Leopold and grebeshkov are not andy sutton. Bone crunching dman with size are not and easy find. I think snow should be holding out. I think he gets his add’l pick. Worst case u have sutton and u resign him.
-
Sutton’s strong defensive play? He’s good for one hipcheck at the Islanders blue line every game. Mr Snow better be careful he doesn’t try to pull over a heist and comes away with nothing.
-
Great photo of Sutton and Sid, it’s like Sid went to prison and Sutton is telling him he owns him.
I’d say with those other guys going for a 2nd rounders it is clear Sutton is worth more. He’s better by a wide margin then anyone who has been traded thus far.
-
Garth is doing the right thing. Sutton has more value than Denis Grebeshkov and Jordan Leopold. He should look to expand the deal to get that late 1st round pick or very good prospect.
-
Not the end of the world if he isn’t dealt. Snow will extend him a year at a nice raise and try again next year.
-
What are the chances he stays?
-
Sutton will be dealt, and Snow will get his price. There is no comparable replacement for Sutton available at the deadline.
-
I would not be suprised if sutts ends up in either Boston or Chicago…in Boston he could be a shutdown guy and play top 4 minutes…and Chicago wants to make a run at the Cup
-
Andy Sutton is a phenominal defenseman and Snow should hold out for a first round pick. If you don’t get one,so be it. He adds alot of character to the team something the the Islanders are lacking.
-
OMG OMG OMG!! lol j/k
this is very good news and he should be holding out for better offers. sutton has been great this year and a team like the caps are in need of a guy like sutton.
but i have a question chris? will snow be packaging sutton and someone/something else to upgrade it to a first?
-
To rephrase what some others have already said in the comments for this post: The GMs in Pittsburgh and Nashville have set the value of Andy Sutton for us.
He’s worth more than Leopold or Grebeshkov, based on his play.
So if they’re worth seconds, Andy is worth more.
Frankly I’d be just as happy with a press release on Wednesday saying that Sutton signed a 2 year deal with us and will be staying, but if Sutton’s got to go ….. then you might as well put someone through the wringer, Garth.
-
Don’t short change him CB, he’s got more than 43 hours left!! haha
-
I wouldn’t mind a 2nd Round pick for Sutton if it was a given that he’d come right back as a UFA….but since there are obviously no guarantees of that happening, a 1st Rounder is a must.
Unload Roloson for a 1st as well and get this rebuild really started!
-
if sutton ends up in boston for a first round pick…make sure garth puts in small print that it was toronto’s first round pick
lol -
why don’t Snow package Roloson and Sutton along with a mid-round pick to Chicago – a blockbuster that makes sense. Take Huet’s contract off their hands, along with Versteeg or Sharpe or something.
We need a young NHL ready player… we’re not getting a lottery pick for these guys…
The deal helps Chicago solidify things in their own end and helps us too…
-
For a playoff team, Sutton is worth so much more than Grebeshkov and Leopold.I say hold out for a better deal. What’s the downside? Worst case we have Sutton for balance of the year, although I think there is a very slim chance he resigns with the Isles for a one or two year deal. Someone will give him three years. It’s important other GM’s know Snow will not be taken even if it means Sutton stays and then signs else where.
-
We need more than a #2 for sutton. I would hope for a #2 and good prospect..
-
Sign Sutton. Why wait 2 yrs for a big, hard hitting guy to play defense—when we have one now?
-
Much as I’m liking his game this year, if Snow can get a 2 and something else for Sutton, I say Party on Garth, go for it
-
If all we get is a second round pick – and it will probably be a late 2nd rounder – is trading him really worth it? Rather than keeping him around the kids and possibly working out an extension do we really need a pick in the high 50′s?
-
Well alright everyone must have read my last post and if not well its good to see I’m not alone.Snow should stand pat unless he gets BLOWN AWAY…if not oh well @ least as a fan I don’t have to watch another ex-Isle go on to bigger and better things.Time to get THIS team turned around. How about this years 1st to Tampa for Vinny L,lets keep Roli and Sutts to make a push for the younger players? Also what a sweet deal for the fans. What would the top 2 lines look like then.Heck we know we’re deep @ the 3rd and 4th lines.Iknow,I know, not part of the rebuild.Wishful thinking.Anyway stick to your guns Garth.
-
No one is taking Park and SIm. End of story.
-
The isles need to start trading for a player who can play now and not worry about draft picks. If they keep getting draft picks the isles fans of today will be dead before they are good again, you need some vets to help a rebuild not just draft picks. Draft picks are just a hope and an educated guess of what they may become.Lets get some nhl ready players for sutton if not sign him to a 2yr deal and move on.
-
Thanks for all the coverage today Chris.
-
Im getting tired of 2nd round picks. How about an actual player. Even if it is just a prospect.
-
the isles only want draft picks in return. Why? you ask. We all know its salary. Of course it make sense to get nhl ready prospects or young nhl players. It is what it is. Hopefully the draft picks turn out to be good nhl level players and a realestate development happensand maybe they spend some money
-
I don’t think we need vets for the rest of the season. Let the “kids” play out the season.
Hopefully get a player that can play and a high draft pick for Sutton and Roloson.
Don’t forget that Sutton also has a long history of injury! Do we have a game on Tuesday? Don’t play Andy, Garth!!!!!! Knowing our luck, he’ll hurt something.Get what ever is possible for Sim and Park – by maybe packaging Tambellini in with it to get a reasonable 3rd or 4th rounder.
We need to prune the NHL level roster to stimulate new growth!
36 hours to go – I’ll be watching every hour or so.
-
If they can get a 2nd and maybe a 5th,6th or 7th, do it Garth. Then take the 2 and a 3 or 4 to move up into round 1. We add a top ten pick and a late first rounder for the next few years and we’ll see the prospects overflowing on the team.
-
A second (most likely a late round or even end of round second) isn’t really going to make a big splash in the rebuild. Those players generally take 4+ years to make an impact if any(think Colliton and Comeau).
The upside of the risk (1st round) is worth the downside of not trading away -
If you can’t get a 1st or a top near ready prospect any move Snow makes is just plain dumb.
-
If Sutton can’t be moved for more than a 2nd round pick then the Isles should do everything they can to resign him soon. I agree that unless they can get a player who is ready now or a 1st round pick then Sutton should remain. He will be missed unless we get something that makes us forget him.
-
Send him anywhere but the Devils. Doesn’t matter what they offer. Don’t do anything to help them get a 4th Cup.
-
Snow should be talking to Washington or Chicago about Sutton and Roloson. Either team is close to winning it all and just needs something to push them over the top. Sutton plus Roloson is that very thing. Washington has loads of good defensemen and goalies in the minors. I’m sure we could get one of them. Chicago would be crazy to trade any roster players like Versteeg, Sharp, or Byflugien. If we can get a prospect, pick, and Huet or better yet Niemi that would be great. I’m not sold on DP ever being good again.
-
Plenty of time to get a deal done. Snow might not get a first round pick but he will certainly get better than a 2nd and 5th.
-
Snow will make the right move
-
Unless an NHL player is traded to the Islanders, I say DONT TRADE SUTTON! ENOUGH WITH THE PICKS!
-
Snow seems to be a deadline kind of guy. I suspect that he will pull an ace out at the last moment. With Philly not having their first round pick available perhaps Garth is looking for prospects rather than picks.
-
Washington is looking for a Veteran pressence on the blue line and a Playoff experienced Goalie. Why not Sutton and Roloson to the caps for John Carlsson and their first?
-
Sutton is 35 trade him for a 2nd or a 2nd and a player. He is not going to be any use for us in a few years that it will take to be good he will be 37 over the hill.He had a great year his value will never be higher deal him now, same with Rolli and Biron move one or both of them.
-
While CB was patiently waiting for news on Suts and Rollie, Venus got off a wrist shot from a bad angle, beating Svetlana on the short side and sending her crashing into the net.
-
I suspect that the Olympics has taken alot out of the the US & Canadian players. The Finns & the Slovaks probably got hit harder than most of the rest. Just like the Home Run Derby in Baseball, I foresee a dropoff for many of those players and their teams will be hurt accordingly. I actually see the Caps as the best rested of the major contenders. Russia mailed it in and few of their other palyers went far.
The Caps are set to run the table here and Sutton could be their key to that success. For the Islanders sake, the Caps are the team with the deepest pockets and most likely to payoff with a legit prospect. Hell, through in Roloson so they have a legit goalie and the Isles could be in their place come 2012 or so.
-
we want a better deal
-
42- Sutton and Roloson will not get Carlson, he is probably one of the top 5 prospects in hockey.
-
I’m a die hard Isles fan, but this is getting to be a joke… Everyone on here is all pumped up for Garth to hold out and get the best return he can, I’m with you, but I’m sick of it… This is how it’s going to be, and this is the same reason I kept my hard earned money in the bank this year. So glad I passed on the season tickets, it would have been a waste anyway.. This is YOUR Isles team, that has given up on making a run to the playoffs already.. ( Get the number one draft pick last year, build the team, mix in a couple vets (Andy Sutton) being one, and then become sellers at the deadline once again…. These posts should turn into protests to Isles management… I’m sick of waiting and waiting, what will it take before we become buyers at the deadline ? There are many teams on the bubble as the last of the playoff spots are up for grabs.. Yet we throw in the towel and become sellers again. My money is worth to much to me, so as most of you enjoyed the run, and have no problem waiving the white flag already, so be it.. Thursday most of you will be on here talking garbage about how the Rangers went out and spent money, tried to get better, (probably won’t), but the point is, the Rags are 5 points ahead of us, and they will do whatever they can to make the playoffs, and bring a playoff game to MSG.. More then what Garth, Charles, and the rest of management will do for US Islanders fans… Face it, Charles is not the answer !!!
-
Trading sutton for anything less than a 1 would be pathetic and have the fans calling for garths head. We have no d. Re-sign him.
-
.. I was saying lets trade Sutton BUTT if the return is only a 2 & 5 rd pick – fuggadddabout, hes worth MORE than that!
.. At least a #1 and a good young NHL player (22 yr old) whos NHL player or a hot prospect — “something along those lines” and nothing less!
.. Worse case is you keep Sutton (big mobile Dman) and add a FA or 2 over the summer, i still think he will be traded though
.. CMON GARTH DONT JUST GIVE HIM AWAY!! nothing cheap! Get as much back as we can get!
-
this is where Gm’s make their money. garth, have a good couple of days until the deadline, do whats best for the franchise. heres a guy who’s made smart picks, smarter signings, and avoid crippling blunders, so have a little faith. CB, put up the cover after the ryan smyth trade. a first for campoli, and few bags of pucks for smyth. have a bit o faith in jedi master snow.
-
I think GS should try to trade AS for whatever he can get. Yes, this season (the contract year) Andy displayed what he can do , yet in the past he always had difficulties staying healthy. So his durability is a BIG ? Plus, he’s turning 35 in a few days, and players @ 35 and older have certain contract restrictions that cannot be moved as easily, plus players cannot be bought out, the teams are on the hook for the whole term of the contract. I’d rather see Garth go after Volchenkov in the off-season, the bone-crushing, shot-blocking machine in his prime (27 or 28 years old). I know Senators are trying to resign him, but I believe he wants out of Ottawa
-
right on #48…it’s a perpetual rebuild. Sooner or later you need to bite the bullet and sign some talent…
It should have been this year… -
I can understand how the Isles might want to part with AS after the Witt situation. As is 35 and having his best year. Signing him is a risk and getting something valuable could be a plus. However, trading Rolie would be another story. When I bought my season’s tickets, I assumed that the Isles would try and play the full 82-game season, not just 62 games. With DP showing again that his career is likely over, trading our best goalie with 20m games to go would be like raising the white flag. I for one would like a refund for the last 20 games if the Isles do that.
-
I know that CB often promotes a “one comment per reader per post” rule.. but I must add some things..
First to ziggymeup: I live out of state, way out of state. Do you realize what trouble and expense I (and other out of town fans) go through to just attend 1 or 2 Isles games a year????? I would give anything to be able to be able to attend 20 or more games in person a year.. I hate it when local fans say “I saved my money cause my fantasy GM opinions weren’t considered”.. not going to games because of the money/cost is one thing, but not going because of not supporting the current roster/plan are another.. I have to watch the Isles on Center Ice and 90% of the games aren’t in HD and look awful.. I’d give quite a lot to be able to be there in person regardless of the stage of the rebuild.. please consider that..
Second I want to just re-iterate that I would strongly prefer Sutton remain an Islander should he be able to be re-signed… and that Roloson remain an Islander unless a great deal comes along.. we still have Biron for 2010 and DiPietro for 2010-2011.. we’re in good shape on goaltending.. BUT, that said, Garth Snow has done a great job with our assets in his tenure that any trade we make for either Sutton or Rollie, I know will be part of the bigger picture..
Bottom line, for me, is that Garth has earned my trust and he’s as much of an Islander as I am… and like many others I’ve been a fan of the team for about 30 years.. And I’m only 34..
-
No..tanking is better. The goal is to win in the playoffs, not celebrate making it there and getting swept.
-
People are so quick to get rid of people just for the sake of getting rid of people. Sutton coming back and helping out a horribly undersized defense for two years until someone like Hamonic is ready to step in and take the bruiser role is more valuable than a second round pick, imo…or even a 2nd and an ultra-valuable 5th round pick!
-
.. We have to be REALISTIC here guys – the Isles have one of the lowest regular season wins in the league (no OT or shootouts) I think its 12 wins or so
.. They are NOT a playoff team and *IF* we didnt have this gimmiky/silly point system they wouldnt be sniffing the playoffs!! Sorry guys but its true!
.. All they did for years was try for the 8th seed, always always chasing the #8 seed and “sneaking in” the playoffs. Always trading young talent for the late season push and it helped them to where we are today, NO MORE OF THAT!
.. BIG PICTURE PEOPLE! We have waited and can wait another yr as long as they keep building/aquiring talent! They are a better team in 2010 and are going in the right direction – why “blow that up’ and trade some of the young guys, it makes no sense at this point!. Keep moving foward and getting talent/depth and YES add a FA or 2 in July, thats they way to properly build a team
-
Nice update.
I agree with Snow…thanks but no thanks.
Sutton is worth more…especially to the Capitals. -
I went through the 2000 NHL draft to see how second round players drafted in Y2K have fared. There were 35 players selected back then (expansion with Wild and Blue Jackets increasing the amount). Probably the best player selected is Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov who played 189 games through 2008-09. Nick Schultz of Minnesota has played the most games with 527. Two other players are in the 400-500 games played range and three in the 300-400. 25 have played 100 or less games. so IF this study is accurate, there is over a 70% chance of a second round pick for Mr Sutton being a washout,
On the other hand we have to weigh what Sutton will do over the rest of his career (not much , I figure. Very unlikely he will be Chris Chelios 2.0) as compared to about a 15% chance of getting a good player to trade for a second round pick several years down the road (now I know how my Pittsburgh Pirates fan relatives feel). For those who don’t know, through 2008-09 Sutton had played in 513 NHL games plus 4 post seasin in 2006-07.
-
We are under no obligation to further anyone’s cause here except our own. They pay dearly for Sutton or we resign him and walk away. That means a first round pick or solid prospect at least – end of story.
-
I like that GMG is holding strong. A contender will buckle… always do.
This game of chicken needs to hold true for both Sutton and Rollie.
I still say a package is the way to go here (Wash/Philly/Chi being the obvious choices of those in need of both a goaltender & physical Dman).
-
Trade Sutton for a 2nd and 4th. Then trade Rolo for a 2nd and 4th. Then trade the two 4ths along with our 4th, for someones 2nd and 3rd. Then we will have four 2nd’s to trade, 3 for a low 1st, and two 3rds and a 5th for another 2nd Get it?…..I love picks- More picks!!
-
Snow is a Hall of Fame GM… He will make all the right trades… Our rebuild is coiming along really great! I am so pumped… SURE! Who CARES!
-
Good call Jeff #55. Heck to the naysayers….and the SD Center Ice really sucks. MAkes me not want to pay for it next year. I too live far away in DC, and I’d kill to be in the barn.
Stay patient my friends. Garth has shown he has an eye for talent, and not doing irrational things.
We’re like beaten wives, always timid, afraid that Mad Mike will come angrily and drunken through the door to beat us again.
-
Second round picks are so key. Snow has shown how important they are by using them to move up in the draft. So if we end up with a few 2nd rounders for Roloson and Sutton it wont be terrible. But it would be nice if Snow was able to package the two of them together and get a bonafide prospect. Teams like the Flyers, Capitals, and Blackhawks all could use help on D and a bonafide playoff goaltender. Both Chicago and Washington both have a high priced goaltender to send back our way and we have the cap space to take one on. Package them together and get more bang for your buck. Snow should go after Carlson, or Van Riemsdyke……figure out a way to get it done. Teams are desperate to win a Cup. Washington is desperate. They are not winning the Cup with Theodore and an injured Varlamov. Take advantage of that. If Garth cant get one of those young players, get a 1st and a 2nd round pick and continue to rebuild through the draft. We should all trust Snow….up to this point he has given us no reason not to.
-
Is it really that beneficial to trade such a vital part of the team for only a second round draft pick that may not pan out for a few years, if at all? It just seems so useless to me. Our defense is already lacking enough, I can’t see how this is a good thing unless we were getting back a draft pick plus an established prospect, in the least.
-
Snow is doing the right thing y holing out for what he wants….worst case scenario, Sutton doesnot get traded, and the team tries to sign the hulking defenseman….
-
I really expect a roster player or decent prospect and a 2nd round pick. I would like a young roster player 25 or younger even if its a tough 5th dmen or a 3rd-4th line tough forward.
-
The Lighthouse situation, with the uncertainty of the long term status of the team’s ability to get the new arena, Wang getting his real estate deal….and the like – have sort of forced our hand to pull a rebuild – till this team has solidified in the ownership/arena situation – it may not make financial sense for Wang to invest in today. Also, I am not interested in making the playoffs just to get waxed in the first round. I want to build a team that DESTROYS the Ranger$, Flyers, Devils and the others….with regularity and am willing to be patient (i.e. THIS year) for that to begin to happen.
-
61 Isles81 (61) and d (67) I agree with both of you- its not like the Isles *NEED* to trade Andy Sutton. He is not unhappy here, he is not a poor player, none of that. Unless it is made worthwhile for this organization (i.e. better than a late 2nd round pick) it would be kinda nice if they didnt trade him and instead signed him for another season. If they DO get a good enough offer, well- I can understand them taking it. But to trade him just for the sake of trading him seems stupid.
-
I would resign him unless I get a 1st rounder or a good prospect – he’s too good and fills such a big void for us to settle for anything less.
As far as a rebuild, rebuilds need vets too – you don’t just sell anyone of value at the end of every year regardless of what they bring to the team.
-
i don’t know if people are in denial or what, but Kascycki’s Krew’s point that due to “the Lighthouse situation, with the uncertainty of the long term status … it may not make financial sense for Wang to invest in today” seems lost out there. why in the world would anyone expect the owner to invest anything more than he absolutely must to keep the ship afloat right now. he hasn’t since the LH issue took over 2 years ago, in fact they’ve gone the other way. this team is in a total, complete and all-inclusive holding pattern, other than drafting and a trade here and there for picks or prosects that might help down the road in case the team stays. given the situation, would you be investing big $$$ in this team right now? sheesh.
-
Sell now….buy this summer.
-
#66 very well said. Could not agree more. I dont like these people who bash snow just for the sake of bashing him because this team has not won a playoff series since the miracle in 1993. I think snow gets a lot for sutton from a desperate team like washington. If your washington and you have pretty much everything to win a cup besides a goalie and a shut down defensemen, how do you not make this trade now?
-
I think trading Sutton is short-sighted.
If Sutton is gone who is going to clear forwards in front of the net.
Instead of trading Sutton we should be locking him up, he is a key piece to a successful team. Not too many D-Men in the NHL with his combination of size and mobility.
Maybe DP’s knee flared up as a reaction to facing opponents without Sutton’s Defensive presence on the ice. -
Garth, please don’t trade Sutton for anything less than a legit defensive prospect (which I’d prefer) or a first round pick.
BTW, this season is not over, we’re going to need something to help us play. If Garth gives up now, it’s an absolute waste of a season. Playoffs can expedite the learning process for the team. I think we need to push. It’s not as hard as everyone thinks.
Florida gave up, as did the Thrashers. The Rags stink, they’re going to be descending rapidly. The Lightning may make the playoffs, this is the Isles only competition for the 8th spot. -
I think that Snow may have set the bar too high for himself with the Campoli heist he pulled off last year, which is looking more and more like an aberation. We shall see which team wants to pay the price. Sutton and Roli can be the difference between a run to the finals and a possible Cup or another early exit for teams like Washington, San Jose, etc.
-
I admit, I thought Sutton would fetch more than a 2nd round pick. If he can’t get more than that I’m all for keeping him around, unless Snow is MORE than confident he can replace (upgrade) him this summer.
We’re not winning anything and if Garth and Co. have already decided he’s not worth resigning (injury issues) we might as well get what we can.
-
For those that question. getting draft picks for 35yr old UFAs in a rebuild. Here are some notable in 2001-2006 drafts
2001- Mike Cammelleri, Pominville
2002- Stoll, Keith, Hudler, Stajan
2003- Eriksson, P. Bergeron, Weber, Backes,Howard,
2004 – David Booth, Brandon Dubinsky, Alex Goligoski, David Krejci.
2005 -James Neal, Guy Latendresse, Paul Stastny, Mason Raymond.
2006 – Milan Lucicso while yes, Chances is not many make the NHL, its worth the try. Not to mention that there are some excellent few but some talented players that emerge in 3rd, 4th, and 5th round.
Im very happy with isles development this year. Record at home has been great too for people that deferred getting seasons.
Another top 5 pick this summer wouldnt hurt. especially a great big puck moving dman. then rebuild is complete.
-
I would hold onto Sutton given our already sensitive D situation (injuries, youth etc.). He appears to suit Gordon’s system (mobile, yet big), and would be a great asset for the “future” as an established NHLer rather than a draft pick which will take time to develop.
-
why do people want to fight for an 8th spot? to get swept by washington in the first round. Completely Pointless
-
Snow should be Saying to Washington – your 1st round pick is like a high 2nd round pick
-
Sutton should be let go only if it brings back a player or high pick. And I think it should be a RENTAL. I like Sutton a lot, and he’s a proven veteran. He has played some of his best hockey this season with us, that’s gotta mean something. I’m sure he would like to stay here as well. So I think we are better off keeping him to tell you the truth. See what we can get for Biron or Maybe Roloson first if you ask me. We don’t need 3 goaltenders…
-
Oh and if you think we are tanking it from here on out, you must be crazy. We have Kyle Okposo, Tavares, Bailey, Schremp that are well rested and hungry to score some goals. I guarantee they come out flying tonight!!
-
How about Sutton to Washington for Fehr and a 2nd rd pick?
-
IF the Isles and Hawks are gonna make any deal(s) it would be before the game tonight.. So if nothing is done, you can cross the Hawks off the Sutton list..
-
I understand the idea of draft picks but what about having a defense that is at least somewhat competitive. We already dumped Witt now Sutton looks to be gone but we keep playing Gervais how does it make us better? I would like to see the Isles at least try for the playoffs
-
@Paulmaz, the playoffs for a young Islander team, that were in last place last year, that shouldn’t be even a thought of a playoff team, making it into the playoffs is HUGE. Who cares if they get swept, the experience that they receive from making it outweighs a 2nd round pick any day.
-
Trade of Sutton would leave ISLES practically defenceless.
How about to finish it all by setting up a package: Sutton and Strait for 1st rounder and a prospect ? -
Can We Hit the Fast Forward Button?
The Suspense of this Trade Deadline is Killing Me…………
I hope for the best, yet expect the worst.
Pls continue to talk me thru this Rebuild.
Thanks.
-
Sutton has stated that he wants to stay on LI. His play has been a pleasant surprise this year. A trade should be something like the cliche “an offer Snow couldn’t refuse” or else you just try to sign him.
-
TSN is reporting that Philly is looking at Nashville’s Dan Hamhuis. Nashville is said to want Ryan Parent in return. I think Sutton is more valuable than Hamhuis, and Philly has a number of young, big defenders: Braydon Coburn is the best (and almost certainly not going anywhere), Parent, O.K. Tollefsen… That could be a possibility.
If Snow could deal Sutton for Coburn I would name a kid after him.

I’m all for the rebuilding but when do we stop getting draft picks and start looking for prospects? Any second rounder in the upcoming draft would be at least 2 years away. What will be do then start trading Okposo and Bailey for picks?

Totally agree, post 82, I do not want to get in as an 8th seed to have the Capitals destroy us. Yes, I know it will be a good experience for the kids, but not sure if it is worth it though.

i heards the canucks might look to trade top prospect Cody Hodgson. i dont know if they need a d man but why not try to get him he is better then the 28-55 pick. most scouts have him as a top line forward and he is ready for the nhl now. we might have to throw in a 3-5th rounder with suts but i think a prospect like that is worth it. they need to get in the top 5 draft spots with there own pick and pick the best player available they need a puck moving d-man but they still need top line forwards.

Rollie & Tambellini (Or Sim, Park, Gervias, Meyer) to Chicago for Huet and a 1st round pick. We get a new starter until the next great Islander Goalie comes along and relieve Chicago of a 1st round pick and cap space..

You have to laugh at the notion that Garth would even consider more draft picks for an NHL Blue Liner who will Greatly assist a playoff contender during the final push. A Body for a Body trade with a 2nd rounder or keep him till we re-sign

Sutton is not a sell at all cost player even if he is an UFA at the end of the season. If you start to undersell now that will set expectations for every future deal the GM makes. It wouldn’t be the end of the world to complete the season with an actual defensemen of size either.

@paulmaz. your right people forget about the 8 seed in a year or two but nobody forgets who won the cup lets just be patient

As long as Washington and Devils still are looking around Garth can delay. But not too long.
