Islanders petition NHL for play-in playoffs
Predict the homestand: Three home games in four days. Three winnable games. I say the Islanders pick up four out of six points. What say you? In Comments.

You’re Never Out of it: At the general managers’ meetings this week in Florida, the Islanders presented a proposal to improve their chances of qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs in future seasons.
The Islanders’ concept - delivered by GM Garth Snow - was for a “play-in” mini-tournament in which the teams at the bottom of each conference would square off against each other to qualify as the eighth seed.
After playing 82 regular season games, teams 8-15 in the East and West would still get a shot at making the playoffs. Wouldn’t matter if you were essentially out of the hunt before Christmas, as the Islanders were last season.
The Islanders, who appear poised to finished 26th or worst in the 30-team NHL for the third consecutive season, apparently did not receive much positive feedback. The Columbus Blue Jackets pushed for the removal of the “loser point” for teams losing in overtime or in the shootout. That proposal was also dismissed.
The story of the Islanders’ idea was first reported by TSN, Sportsnet and the Canadian Press. One journalist in Boca Raton said the best aspect of the concept was the laugh it brought to all of the hockey people and media at meetings predominantly focused on rulings on hits to the head.
When asked by Point Blank about the merits of the team’s proposal, a National Hockey League source replied, “The chances of it happening are the same as it being taken seriously - zero percent.”
Here’s what I want to know. Let’s say, as they did last year, the Islanders play 82 games and finish last in the league. However, they win the play-in tournament and get swept by Washington in the first round.
Would that mean, because of the round robin, they would lose the top pick in the draft? You’d have to think so, which would really make a person wonder.

Future Watch: The special edition of The Hockey News is out now, with Calvin de Haan (28) and Travis Hamonic (61) the only Islanders placing in the top 100 among prospects not in the NHL.
As many readers have mentioned, the Islanders’ overall grade of B+ (up from C+) is skewed a bit because all players 20 and younger are included when grading team performance. For the Islanders’ grade, John Tavares and Josh Bailey count. According to The Hockey News, the Islanders are eighth in the league. The top five: Los Angeles, St. Louis, Colorado, Chicago and the Rangers.
Among the locals, the Rangers - with former Islanders scouting boss Gordie Clark running the draft the last few years - placed three players ahead of de Haan: Derek Stepan (16), Evgeny Grachev (21) and Chris Kreider (22). The Devils’ most recent first round picks made the list: Jacob Josefson (37) and Mattias Tedenby (40).
The magazine polls 23 NHL scouts to establish its rankings.
*
Tonight’s Tilt: The Blues, who will start Chris Mason in goal, have not played a game since Saturday. St. Louis is an impressive 18-10-4 on the road this season, fourth in the NHL. Only elder statesman Keith Tkachuk is out with an injury.
As reported by Katie Strang, the Islanders are not recalling anyone for tonight’s game. This means Jeff Tambellini has a chance of getting in.
As reported by Mike Fornabaio, Josh Bailey will likely make his American Hockey League debut if Bridgeport qualifies for the playoffs. Bailey, along with current Islanders Andrew MacDonald, Dustin Kohn, Dylan Reese and Trevor Gillies, has been placed on the Clear Day list for the Sound Tigers. John Tavares, although eligible, was not put on the roster by the Islanders.
*
The Plan: Garth Snow on “NHL Live” on Tuesday: “The future is bright. We’ve just got to stick to our plan and make these young kids realize how important these wins are down the stretch.”
On the trade deadline: “There were a couple of offers for our other free agents. But we were five points out from a playoff spot. For me, it would have sent the wrong message to that locker room and to our fans. These games down the stretch are so valuable for our younger players.”
At least two wins in these three games. Your prediction, and thoughts on this post and tonight’s game, in Comments.

Please Wait

I say 2-3 points is max they will get.
Start playing Tambi.(it’s now or never for him as he is a RFA at the end of the year.)
And bring up JJ and Martin. Lets give them some more experience up on the Island.
It would have been nice to see JT on the Clear Day Roster. It would have helped him and the organization. He could get a glimpse of playoff hockey.
About the game tonight, If Janssen is in the lineup, I would dress Gillies. Janssen is known for playing with an edge and sometimes taking it too far.
2 points max
3 points - go further out on a limb and say 3 ‘loser’ points. We love those.
Snow really must be some kind of moron. I haven’t had much to complain about in regards to him up until the last few weeks. I like the rebuild and the direction the team is going but he has no idea how to ‘run’ a franchise.
This bonehead idea of a tournament for teams 8-15 is laughable. CB, if you were still with the team would it have been your job to pull him aside before the GM meetings and say ‘hey, that ranks right up there with sumo wrestlers for goalies’?
We are such a joke in this league, on and off the ice.
Snow should spend his time, and apparently his vivid imagination on what might really help his team instead of this juvenile idea of a mini series. How about starting with adding some real good sized players to the “rebuild”.
2 points - 1 at a time.
i think its a crazy idea too. but everyone laughed when we started the ice girls when we did 10 year contracts and now everyone does it. so you never know.
Can the Isles look any more foolish than with this proposal!
I am sure this was a Snow and Wang brainstorm on how they can continue to be among the worst teams in the league year after year but still have a shot at playoff revenue!
The NHL already has a round robin to see what bottom teams can make the playoffs, it is called the regular season!!
Hey Snowjob and Wanker, how about instead of looking for a back door entry to the playoffs you build a top 8 team that can compete for the Cup the old fashion way! By winning!!
Also in the THE HOCKEY NEWS future watch it talks about local boy James Marcou from Kings Park NY who plays at UMASS as one of the top college hockey free agents ,Do you think we mite be in the mix
I say 4 pts, but if we dont get 2 pts on sunday vs. Toronto then I dont know how many they end up getting. I would like to see John Tavares get 2 goals or about 3-4 pts in the next 3 games. I think the Islanders win tonight 4-3. Funny Joke by Snow at the gm meetings. I always knew he had a good sense of humor. As for the draft rankings, im glad the Islanders will be adding probably a top 3 pick(definitely top 5) this year. I also expect them to move up again like they did in last years draft or do something interesting on draft day.
That is the stupidest idea in Sports I’ve ever heard
Really Snow? KO gets destroyed in PRE-SEASON and this is what you bring to the table in a meeting that’s about hits to the HEAD?!? Really?
Now you want the same guys you just told this to, to offer 2nd round picks instead of 3rd rounders at next year’s deadline why?
Points - 3 tops.
Proposed play in tournament - Sounds like Wang thought of this and made Garth pitch it to the rest of the league. Bad idea, beyond dumb…but when the boss tells you to do something, you bite your tongue and do it.
Marcou was an invite to an Isles camp a year or two back. I understand he played well but is REAL small. Sounds like an Islander to me.
2 points max in the next 3 games.
Another stupid idea by the Isles braintrust that makes them look foolish.
I’m so embarassed. I tried to think of how that might be a decent idea in every way I could, but it only sounds at best silly. Really bad idea. I hope this doesn’t spread around. I have no predictions. I just wish we were higher in the prospect grading. It sucks it seems a few of our prospects fell off in bridgeport - did they just never really have the talent?
I think I’ll go re-read the “bright side” post and make myself feel better with fingers crossed.
Rangers have 3 prospects better than DeHaan? after trading like 6 picks to move up and draft him? Not good
I believe this off season is key but sometimes I just have to suspend my disbelief with this team.
1. first this emabarassing idea the play in.
2. that quote about not movign free agents at the deadline, if we were so close to a playoff spot why trade sutton a player we would desparately need to make the playoffs and at least win a game in them.
3. why not qualify tavares for the bridgeport playoffs? if bailey is going why not tavares. maybe he will gain confidence from the slower pace and get on a good streak. if the argument is wear and tear on the body, number 1 he si 19 an number two even if bridgeport makes the finals and wins it all it is still june so he has all of july to rest.
the only thing i can think of by not making him eligible is that they want him to start on his off season training regiment as early as possible to get strength and better like bailey did last season.
marcou is listed at 5′8 but i will take him. hes a forward with skill and hes 22 not 25 like gilroy. worst case hes like jason krog.
Surprised Kreider gets ranked ahead of DeHaan considering they were in the same draft and Kreider was selected 10 spots behind Calvin.
3 points max but my gut says 1, loser point against Toronto. Back in the top three though…
#13 those are just rankings. It doesnt mean it will 100% play out that way. As long as De haan stays healthy, he will be good and I think a #2 dmen.
I say 1 pt — loser point vs. Toronto. Hope for zero.
Snow’s proposal to have a series to decide the eighth seed is absurd. In comparison, it makes the “Fishsticks” jersey idea look good. Perhaps Wang will propose a sumo goalie again.
Snow saying that not trading players at the deadline was a message to the team that they’re in the playoff hunt, one would ask why they didn’t do anything to ADD talent, even though most folks seem to agree that trading away players (in addition to Sutton) was the way to go. I’d rather see Ovechkin and company kick the crap out of some other team.
The Isles proposal went to far….but is not far off the mark. A Qaulifying round for the last 4 spots 13-20 would be more reasonable The winners would ger slots 13-16…the 30th place team should not have a chance…..under this scenario 1-12 basically get a bye.
Snow traded many picks to move up and take DeHaan-I still think it was unnessesary.
they may get 1 or 2 points but doubtful this defense is a joke and can ANYONE tell me why Gervais starts every game plays on every penalty kill and why he is even in the NHL at all he is aweful
Why do I get the sense that this “play-in” crap was decided by Wang, and delivered to Snow, who gingerly agreed to do it? No one with any sense of a hockey mind would contribute to the destruction of the regular season in a way that all teams getting a shot after 5 months of grueling games would.
Snow comnments about not dealing goalies at the deadline are just foolish. We’re close, so we dealt of best Dman and only physical presence on the team. How often can he insult our intelligence - its no wonder so many Isles fans are angry - we are sick of being lied to. The Sutton deal is now looks like a salary dump and it amazes me that the media hasn’t called them on it.
this is our gm? wow just when you think it can’t get more embarassing
our GM is a clown with this stupid proposal
Nothing about this team amazes me anymore. A GM meeting primarily focusing on head shots and this is what Garth brings to the table. You would think he could have waited until the summer to bring up his concept but hey these are the Isles we are talking about. Thanks Garth for making us even more of a league wide joke.
1)3 Points–one for each game. I just hope their moderately enterntaining because they will be among my last as a season ticket holder for a while.
2) For whatever rankings are worth, 28 and 61 do not make a rebuild.
3) Odds-on that the play-in proposal was a CW/Chris Dey idea–No doubt their market reserach showed it was a hit with those under 10-years old. Since Sparky was unavailable to present the proposal, I guess Garth being the loyal lapdog with no shame carried the water to the GM meetings. After all, CW pays the bills.
Alas, the only GM to question the owner was gone in 40 days. I guess that means the Isles will wander in the desert for 40 years.
I honestly thought this mini-palyoff was a joke.
Just CB trying to be funny.
I had to ask myself “What gives its not April Fools Day?”
When Garth made this presentation was he wearing a flower that squirts water on his lapel?
Did he have enormous red shoes on at the time?
Did he, Charles, Chris Dey, El Gordo, Tavares, KO, Rollie, Howie Rose, Jaffe, Deb Placy, Joe Duerr, Nyles, Katie Strang, Ziggy, Mikko Makela, and Kirk Muller all arrive in on every small car?
StevieL hit it on the head. This team just continues to embarrass. What a joke.
Its pretty depressing to hear (from an unbiased source) that we’re behind the rags. I wonder if the two goalies we picked last year cracked the top 500.
I’ll guess 3 points - 1 vs StL, 0 vs NJ and 2 vs Tor.
Thanks Garth for giving the entire hockey world another reason to laugh at this franchise. Sorry CB, I could not read any more of this wild card type mini tourney thing.
What’s next awarding a team 2 goals for a PPG or SHG?????
Isles will grab 2 pts
Total emnbarassment - we are truly the laughing stock. Was Snow sober when he made that proposal?
I’ve reserved judgment on GM Snow figuring he has through this upcoming offseason to make some solid signings and trades to make our 10-11 season a playoff-bound one before I conclude on his effectiveness. Reading about the round robin idea he presented at the GM meetings has made me lose a large chunk of respect, and more importantly, confidence in his role and ability as a bona-fide NHL GM. What’s wrong with him? That is one of the most inane ideas I’ve ever heard. Couldn’t he bring up the KO hit as a prime example of hits to the head and then just keep his mouth shut and listen? He may actually learn something that way.
3 of 6 points - Isles lose 2 of 3 but get a loser OT point in one of the games.
“These games are so important to our young guys down the stretch.” Yeah, they’re important if you’re actually winning. You know what’s more important, Garth? Getting another really good prospect in the draft. Because Garth knows just like the rest of us that without another young stud next year, we’re destined to be in the bottom…again.
Very embarrassing proposal, I hope it was conceived by Wang and not Snow because I know he is clueless. I would venture to say Wang because he wants playoff bucks rolling in and apparently thinks the Isles need a handicap. Being a mickey mouse organization would be a step up for us. Here’s a though; maybe after finishing in dead last the team with the least points in the league should play in the final for the Stanley Cup…oh brother! We are a laughingstock. Even the laughingstocks are laughing at us. We will get maybe one loser point but my guess is NO points at all…and thats what we should all hope for.
the idea that Garth had a chance to trade the impending free agents and the fact that he didn’t proves that this job is way over his head. Enuff said.
CB: What are your thoughts on North Dakota’s Jason Gregoire - I know he is Islander property. Where do you foresee him playing with us in the future.
the infamous play-in tournament idea wasn’t snow’s idea - it was another stroke of brilliance from our owner. it might be the worst idea that i’ve ever heard. the ahl playoffs should be a good learning experience for bailey, macdonald etc.
I wasn’t supposed to post as I have boycotted posting on IPB cuz I am a negative Isles (thanks to Wang & Snow)fan BUT…
What the heck did I just read???? If true and I know it is… MY GOSH JEEZ! I am truly done now with the TEAM and Hockey. I will be a Flyers fan if I comeback. Okay I am will go back into hibernation… What a JOKE! My 33 yr run as an Isles fan is officially over!
0 points, The blues are in the thick of the Western Conference race with all the motivation to get 2 against a lifeless squad, no chance against the Devils as they peppered the Rag$ and chased Henrik to the pine last night, and the Leafs are much improved and stable.
Leave it up to Snowman to come up with that playoff scenario for teams 8-15, what a joke! The embarASSment continues..
Oh and speaking of the Leafs, let’s not forget that Dion is now part of the blue and white. Question is, WHO is going to step up and put on the foil in a pay back for that head hunting hit on KO in Calgary this past pre-season?
The Islander proposal , if true, is a total embarrassment. They want to be rewarded for playing like crap. As a fan, and season tix holder, this makes me wonder if Wang has any plans to spend money to improve this team. The brain trust of the Islanders should be spending their time on trying to improve the team, not wasting it trying to figure out a scheme to get into the playoffs by habitually finishing in last place.
This has Wang’s fingerprints all over it. Charle’s if you want to fill up the building, and get a new one, put a better product on the ice. It’s that simple!!! It’s called business 101. They teach it at Nassau Community College. Where would Computer Associates be today if you sold garbage products year after year? Would you have any customers? I have tried to support Mr Wang and Snow, but between this and training in China, I am starting to wonder if these guys are clueless when it comes to running a pro sports franchise.
Now we are just going out of our way to embarass ourselves!!! They should be doing everything possible to NOT attract attention, yet they feel the need to bring more shame on our house!!! Boooooooo!!!
Thanx for embarrassing this organization Garth…we need more people laughing at us!!! More concerning than the utter silliness of this proposal is the idea suggests Snow doesn’t see us becoming a winner anytime in the foreseeable future…HOW FRIGGEN ALARMING IS THAT !!!!!!
Snow’s proposal is too dumb to comment on.
However, the NCAA wants 96 teams in their March Madness Men’s Basketball Tournament, so anything is possible.
I say the Islanders win one of the next three games.
with this proposal the Circus has arrived early at NVMC. As for predictions for the homestand, I say 2 points at most; sad day in Islander Country. I am looking forward to see David Perron on the blues play now that my fav Isle Shrempy is out.
I could see a play-in game for 8th & 9th seeded…MAYBE. But the 30th placed team having an opportunity at the stanley Cup? It voids the entire regular season. What a childish & immature suggestion. Instead of trying HARDER, instead of striving to perform BETTER…let’s come up with a plan where FAILURE is rewarded.
These are your new York Islanders, my God– have they no shame??
GM FAIL
2 pts in the next 3 games.
Not feeling very optimistic with all the injuries on this team. However, I hope they continue to battle and develop. Would be nice to see the kids finish strong. A few Ranger games coming up too…..let’s deliver the knock-out punch!!!
I Think the team is exhausted CB. More so mentally than physically. Ill give them 3 pts on the home stand. Lets just hope we dont start racking up injuries.
Im going to use this mini-tourny joke at work right now, should get some laughs
The extra round sounds like it’s borrowed from the Olympics. They could borrow a better idea of 3 pts for a regulation win, 2 for OT/SO win, 1 for OT/SO loss, 0 for regulation loss. That’s how you eliminate the parity in the league and paint a more realistic picture of pretenders and contenders.
I say we get at least 3 points out of the mini-homestand. Game against the Flyers really was a very well-played game until we had our usual 3rd period meltdown so there’s hope. Even we can’t melt down all the time.
I have liked what Snow has done with picks/free agents and building this team. But this idea he proposed is the DUMBEST things ive ever heard. It has Charles Wang written all over it. The guy has no hockey sense. Charles - open your wallet. Close your mouth. Love, Isles fans.
I think they will tank the remaining schedule and finish just above Edmonton in overall standings. I hope they win Saturday because I am traveling from NJ with two of my kids to see the game. Lets hope we can get a player that can play with Taveras next season.
So I guess this mini-tourney joke implies that Wang intends to have a crappy team every year…. Thats wonderful. Can I become a Devils fan now?
To quote my favorite movie (to Garth regarding his asinine proposal):
“Just when I thought you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this.”
What I want: 0 points in three games and for Toronto to go on a 10 game winning streak.
What we’ll get: 3 points in these next three games and Toronto will crap the bed.
A play-in for the 8/9 seeds is not a terrible idea, even if they’d just get blasted out of the 1st round. I’m going to try to remain optimistic and say they beat the Blues and the Leafs and lose to the Devils. And oh yeah, Sunday Pfaneouf is here, time to pay for what he did to KO in the pre-season
My thought is 2 points. I feel the Islanders should play their hearts out and show us they got promise. Would I want a high draft pick? Yes, but not at the cost of them only winning 1 or 2 more games. That would create turmoil for the team from the top to the bottom I feel. My take in the last 16 games… 4-12
at this point i hope no points lets get a top 3 pick were not making the playoffs neway
The Rebuilding process will be complete when the team finds themselves in a middle playoff spot and wins at least a round of the playoffs. Then they have to continue to grow from there. Lighthouse Project…Dont hold your breath its in a politicians hands now.
Imagine if the Islanders were being included in this news?
“Today marks the Nets and FCRC’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Barclays Center.”
Maybe they will be someday retroactively?
But imagine how exciting it would be to see similar news Including: the Isles, Nassau County, & the Lighthouse Project?
REALLLLLY SNOW????!!!!
two points..via the loser point on Saturday and Sunday.
Congratulations to Josh Bailey on the possibility of getting some playoff experience in the AHL. It must be a great thrill for him. He does so much for the team, like showing up for the “greet John Taveras”last summer at NCVMC.
Play-ins for the playoffs is as stupid an idea as hiring a sumo wrestler to play goalie.
I guess this proves what I have been saying over and over on this site. I have no faith in Snow and the scouting dept. Where are our two goalies picked in back to back rounds last year in the future watch? You mean we didn’t have to use the first pick of the second round on a kid we could have gotten in the 4th round? LOL. Snow is a moron. How many picks did he use to trade to get DeHaan?? Anybody doubt that Snow will use the 2nd from the Sutton deal to move up 3 spots to take a 5′9 defenseman next year?? Snow is so pathetic it makes me sick. To propose a play in formula just confirms everything I have thought about him. Islanders will go nowhere with Snow in charge.
I am certain Koskonin would have been ranked if he weren’t injured.
Why is it the Isles have to always be the team coming up with the IDIOT ideas? I’m embarassed for them.
Couldn’t Snow better use his time talking about fair officiating and dirty hits like the ones delievered to Comeau, Okposo, and Nielsen?
The statement Snow made on NHL LIVE is the exact kind of stuff that is turning me against him. I like out draft picks but his lies and talking down to us.
Botta did he really need gain assets for FA’s and other players because he thought they had a shot in hell at the playoffs or was it he didn’t get offers he likes. If he chose not to get fair value in return then he’s AN IDIOT and hurt the team.
Botta can you please talk about Eric Brewer today? Isles draft pick, thought highly off, had a confidence issue, was in the minors and then traded to EDM for something crappy (Hamrlik I think). He’s had a nice NHL career, why wasn’t it on LI?
I read about that idea the other day. Such an idiot
Losers point against St. Louis, beat
Toronto, lose to Brodeur. 3 points.
Dumb idea for sure. Makes my decision to give up the season tix look good. Applying for a job transfer to our St. Petersburg, FL office. If I get it, I can become a Bolts fan and go see Steve Stamkos.
Derek stephan is going to be a player. That’s ok we took corey trivino instead. Garth is proving to be mostly inept. No points. I think its very possible that we lose out the season. We are getting close to being able to rate the garth/jank drafts. Early returns are lousy.
I don’t know why people are laughing at Wang’s idea. I find it very disturbing. Because only an organization that recognizes that they are never going to compete for a playoff spot under the current system would make such a suggestion.
That play-in tournament would help prevent teams from tanking to get into the lottery, so it should at least be taken more seriously than 0%
Its so important that we lose to Toronto in regulation. I am hoping for 0 that’s right ZERO points out of the next few games but I think we’ll end up with 2 points either a win or a couple of lose points.
I really want the Isles to finish 29th overall in the league and assure ourselves of no worse than the 3rd pick overall.
#56…that’s hilarious…at least in the movie he TOTALLY REDEEMED HIMSELF! maybe the isles can too? haha
that play in garbage is a joke. it has chris dey and wang written all over it. whoever it was that said sparky was supposed to propose it but was unavailable was hilarious also.
i’ve tried hard to stay loyal to this team, but i’m getting tired of them showing fans no respect. i really cant believe some of the stuff they are doing.
also, incase you havent been to a game lately, they are having a refrigerator drive at an upcoming game. so you know, just throw your 6 foot, 300 lb fridge on your car and drive down to the coliseum. then bring it to the box office where security and isles staff will have no clue what is going on even though they advertised it for that day.
what a joke.
The play-in idea has Wang’s fingerprints all over it. Why not have a second play in to get into the playin? I think it may be Wang who got hit in the head.
Instead of a play-in why doesn’t the NHL adopt what they do in Europen soccer where the bottom teams get demoted to a “minor” league division and the better teams in the minor league get promoted to the top league. We already have a minor league roster in a minor league arena so why not make it official.
What an embarrassing suggestion. Snow is a LOOSER and He just shouted it out loud and clear for the entire NHL to hear.
I hate to admit it but I’m in draft one of the top three mindset so let stink this week.
as far as the GM idea it sounds as good as signing your goalie to a 15 year contract!
You guys know Wang put snow up to that silly playoff idea right? Wang has been a failure on n off the ice n is the worst thing to ever happen to the isles. We get laughed at by the rest of the league. Nobody respects us. We don’t take winning seriously n isles shouldbe playing in the ahl
2 Pts.
Pretty ridiculous idea by Snow. That said, I would consider a format where the top 4 seeds get (rewarded with) a bye and seeds 5-12 play a best of 5 to get to the next round. The second round would need to be re-seeded. Draft pick order would be determined by regular season standings. A playoff team (top 12 seed in each conf.) would not get into the lottery.
I am a huge Isles fan but this team is becoming a JOKE!! Note to Garth:instead of trying to figure out ways to sneak into the playoffs, build a team that is actually able to EARN a spot in the playoffs. And please stop lying to us. You trade away Andy Sutton for next to nothing and say it is important to win. PLEASE!!! Colorado rebuilt in a short time, Phoenix rebuilt in a short time. It CAN be done!! Hey Garth, I have an idea for next year. How about put a winning team on the ice!!!
I would also like to add … fire Gordon
Isles luck - The Play in gets adopted, we are in 8th next year and get ousted in the first play in game by the last place team.
2 points max in next 3 games.
That suggestion by snow was embarassing. Who gave him that idea OBAMA? Nice to come up lame suggestion to reward mediocrity. If you want to make the playoffs you play well all year.
Seguin, Hall or Fowler looking like a possibility
Points really are meaningless at this point. I say none. all 2-1 losses.
Bring on the June Draft!!!!!!
Wow, if Snow is suggesting THAT playoff scheme at the GM meetings, how does he ever expect to be taken seriously by his colleagues? Seriously…
A Wang idea, no less, but I’d think a hockey person would have to actually shame himself to introduce such a thing.
Unfortunately, the comments on the trade deadline are also very disappointing. If you can, you send off Biron, Sim and Park for the same reason you sent off Sutton: they’re not in your future plans. And who is Snow kidding - having traded Sutton was already symbolic enough that this team did NOT see itself in playoff contention. If all you get is 3 5th rounders for the aforementioned guys, then that’s what you get. Then you have something when the draft comes around and THOSE guys who you’re not planning with anyway are gearing up for free agency.
You then bring in others to play. You work in Jackman, Tambellini and a guy or two like Martin/Smith/Joensuu/Mauldin more, especially when BPort has 4 or 5 days off. You maybe sign an older veteran or two out of Europe (regardless of where they’re from) to finish off the year, if necessary.
There are many ways Snow could have gotten the same results with this team down the stretch AND still have loaded Jankowski’s pockets a bit more along the way.
I think 2 points for the Isles max this week.
After the joy / excitement of the 2 week Olympic tourny. . getting back to Islander reality is tough.
–> Snow’s play - in proposal is so embarassing. Makes him seem like an amateur at the adults table of these meetings.
–> I also have a problem with Snow’s trade deadline comment about not wanting to send the wrong message to the guys. Dealing their biggest “D” man for a late 2nd rounder, yet stringing along 3 goalies for the last 15 meaningless games. . FAIL
–> Also, if it’s so important for the young guys to play / get wins over the last 15 games, then where are Matt Martin and Jesse Joensuu?? Wouldn’t a full month of NHL experience be invaluable to them, as well?
–> I whole - heartedly agree with eliminating the “loser point” system. If you lose in OT you SHOULD NOT be rewarded with a point! This is how it was pre - shootout, this is how it should be now.
Snow should have brought up the Sumo for Goalie Idea , He would have gotten a bigger laugh.
Snow = Puppet
This organization make themselves always look stupid - I have Zero confidence in them at all ….I’m not paying them any more money until they start doing the right things for the fans ..we want answers soon, not in 6 months.
embarrassing, but it does have Wangs fingerprints all over it. Snow is his his puppet. Enough of this winning games nonsense, Toronto is not that far behind us! Ill take Fowler please.
I’m starting to think Wang should sell this team. I can’t imagine things getting better around here.
Garth is incompetent (even if his idea to rebuild is a good idea). He doesn’t know how to do it. Worse that this cockamainey idea of a playoff before the playoffs, he cant draft talent. He has made a couple of FA signings that work out ok, but a bunch that haven’t too. His belief that our D this year wasn’t the worst collection among the 30 teams in the NHL is mind blowing. This team has no plan, other than be bad to get good.
Garth needs to speak about how and when we should expect this team to be good.
Chris Dey needs to be shown the door.
Why can’t this team do anything right?
The deadline was a message to the team? If playoffs were the goal, why trade Sutton? Why not add a player (OK…besides Dylan Reese)? Seems like the choices were buy or sell and the Isles did neither. Just say “we didn’t like the offers.” Not this “it was for the players” line.
As for “play in” suggestion…in the words of Samir from Office Space, “This is horrible, this idea.”
2 points, and that mini tournament idea is one of the dumbest things that I have ever heard.
The real question is who gets hurt in these 3 games?
Lets hope for 0 points. I wonder if Burke was literally laughing in his seat while Joke Snow was proposing this “plan”
Gordon needs to shake up the lines - they are out of it so why not try something different:
Tambellini Tavares Okposo
Comeau Bailey Moulson
Bergenheim Neilsen Park
Sim Weight Jackman
Sim should be waived, and what is the point of playing Jackman when he cannot fight..just bring up Trevor Smith, Martin & Joensuu already… to get them some experience
The tournament idea is completely stupid. Why bother playing the season. I like the GM who tried to get the loser point removed. If they don’t remove the loser point then they should switch to the Olympic point system 3 pt for regulation win, 2 pt for OT win and 1 pt for OT loser.
At the deadline the Islanders should have gone out and gotten themselves a big 6-6 shutdown defenseman. Oh wait they had one and traded him.
.. I dont know whats dumber this or the baseball alignments just talked about, why do people think this nonsense?
.. Wanna makes the playoffs? - PLAY BETTER AND WIN GAMES, Whats next count? counting preseason games? arrrrgh what a IDIOTIC IDEA!!!
.. I already hate the ‘new gimmicky NHL rules’ we have now (shootout pts, OT wins, etc) its all a joke and now this? I HAVE A NOVEL IDEA MR GM!!….. PUT A BETTER PRODUCT ON THE ICE!!!
Play-in? Are you kidding? I am so embarrassed for this organization. Imagine sitting at the table when that is proposed? And this nonsense about not trading because it would send the wrong message? OK well send the right message and trade for an addition to the team. My God, this franchise becomes more and more intolerable by the day.
I think that the mini tournament idea is actually pretty cool. It would create a true underdog every season and make players on bad teams more motivated and given them a small sense of hope.
I’d be stunned if the Isles win more than two or three games the rest of the season.
Do you know how hard it is to continue to be an Islanders fans now that I live in Chicago and the most exciting and (arguably) best team in the league plays 10 minutes from my front door. I hope I get rewarded for my faith in this franchsie at some point but every year it gets harder and harder.
1. Pts: I predict the Isles go into the 3rd Period om all 3 games with the lead, and come away with ZERO Points.
TayTyCam Here we come.
2. ““There were a couple of offers for our other free agents. But we were five points out from a playoff spot. For me, it would have sent the wrong message to that locker room and to our fans. These games down the stretch are so valuable for our younger players.””
Thus Sim, Park, Biron individually > Andy Sutton to the Isles playoff chances. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HA
3. The proposed round robin tournament sounds like a loser teams’s rationalazation of saying they qualified for the playoffs.
Hay Garth & Chuck why dont you focus on games 1-82 to have the Isles qualify for the playoffs.
…that idea is embarrassing. And they are idiots for proposing it.
This is such a shame. I really liked what Snow had done by out waiting Blake, trading for Smyth, choosing Tavares, and sticking to his plan of rebuilding through the draft. I gave him the benefit of the doubt on the occasional stumbles but these last few weeks I don’t know what to think anymore. Thinking outside the box is good because it forces us to relook at long held notions but Snow has no capital. If the Islanders were just coming off their second cup in 2 years no one would have laughed but with their current state the “boys club” is free to snicker at us again.
As for the idea itself, I think its stupid. The NHL is already the league where “everyone makes the playoffs”. Snows idea would make that statement true. I know the league loves revenue but I would prefer it to be harder to get in. Lose the loser point or go to the system they used in the Olympic tournament (every game worth 3 points). we might see the whole league try just a little harder during the season.
Win 2 games would be very nice
That proposal is the BIGGEST joke I’ve ever heard HAHAHA are they serious? Why dont we try to win some games throughout the season to make the playoffs normally- not have some new rule established for us.
Why must they constantly make us the laughing stock of hockey?
During the course of the Florida meetings, the GMs were broken in to working groups that served as brainstorming sessions.. all kinds of other ideas were presented, such as all-star team selections and new point/standings structures..
So while this was a head-shot meeting primarily, there were other topics on the agenda.. and other working groups..
I like to think all ideas should be presented.. and while I wish Snow knew better than to offer this suggestion, I like to think everyone would at least be adults about it..
But, in hindsight, I realize the idea that we could behave like adults is about as stupid of an idea as the play-in..
My prdeiction… 4 points, 2 of them loser-points.
Heres an idea Garth. If you actually went out and tried to aquire legitimate talent either by trade or by signing a “quality” free agent or two, you wouldnt have to worry about a “mini playoff” because the islanders would actually be in playoff contention.
NO to Garth’s proposal. Make the playoffs by playing good enough.
2 points. Those rankings and Hockey’s future rating system are both totally bogus. Gratchev hasn’t looked that great to me in the AHL, sure he was great in the OHL but as we all know it doesn’t mean anything. That round robin 8th seed playoff idea is so dumb, just another way to get more money from the die hard fans while providing them with a horrible team. Snow should be ashamed of himself for even suggesting that idea.
Here is an idea that I’m shocked that Garth and Charles haven’t attempted to get approved.
The games should only last for 2 periods, get rid of the third. If that was done, we would be in the playoffs this year. Since our coaching staff can figure out how to get these young players to continue to play in the 3rd period of most games, why not eliminate it. : ))
I would have at least smiled for that idea ! ! !
i have never been more embarassed to be an islanders fan than when i just read this play in proposal..( and that is saying something) Why not have all 30 teams make the playoffs and give everyone a trophy! yay!…Garth you cant shower enough to wash off the lameness of that cockamaymed stoopid idear!.
0-1-2. . .two heartbreakers and a thrashing by the devils
Lance79 (#52)…Spot on.
How assinine is it to have some games worth a total of three points while others are valued at two? Another fine decision by “Blinky” Bettman!
Re: DeHaan…considering he lost a good part of the year to injury how was he supposed to improve his standing?
To sum up what a few have stated, these “future rankings” are subjective, meaningless fluff whose purpose is to fill up a periodical or blog. Ask guys like Alexander Daigle and Pavel Brendl!
2 pts. max.
Snow’s comments about the trade deadline crack me up. He must really think we are a gullible bunch. Give it a rest Snow, its beginning to become insulting.
I think placing JT on the Tigers for the playoffs would have been a great experience for him. If Bailey can go, whay can’t he? Doesn’t seem right.
And Garth’s proposal to the league is also ridiculous. No wonder our team is never taken seriously. That was the best idea they could come up with?! Ugh. Now I know why fans wear paper bags on their heads.
I watched that interview on the NHL network. It was one of the few things he actually said. He came and they asked him questions. The majority of which he laughed and said he couldn’t answer. So don’t feel bad CB. He doesn’t want to answer questions from anyone!
Brian Burke came on the next day and answered every question posed to him!
Would have loved to have been there for Snow’s proposal. “Listen guys, we’re not going to spend any money or try to build a winning team. Can we change the way the 8th seed is awarded or we’ll never make the playoffs again. We gotta justify our ticket price increase. Pleeeaaase!”
Brian #40 ….. We will see you the next time CB posts something. If you were done you wouldn’t have stopped by today.
since the Isles feel the need to come up with a scam like that to make the playoffs what does that even tell you about where they think they’ll be finishing in the standings the next few years? Instead of saying we’ll draft well, develop our guys, make strategic trades and FA signings and finish in the top 5 every year they have to come up with some scam to try to make it, what a joke.
maybe if the play-in idea was suggested by a team that spent more than league min on team payroll, someone would have listened rather than laugh…maybe
My prediction - 0 points, this team looks like a stripped down Toyota Prius on cinderblocks.
It was never as good as advertised and it was exposed once it was stripped down.
Perhaps Snow could suggest a pie eating contest of the 8th playoff spot.
Mr. Snow, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Seriously though, that proposal is beyond embarrassing… I actually stopped and literally looked at my calendar to see if it was April 1st… No joke. I can’t get over that. Sorry.
When you think it can’t get any worse, from sumo wrestlers in goal (a rumor I once heard) to everyone making the playoffs, where does this end. Apparently Charles and Garth are writing an updated version of Hockey for Dummies.
I saw the NHL Live interview as well, the last laugh is on all Islander fans, sticking to the plan as Garth puts it, that is laughable, they always over value their talent Andy McDonald is just one example he is an AHL’er at best and he is one of the best Defensemen they have, pathetic.
OK I have to say as an Islander fan I am very embarrassed by what snow proposed at the meeting. I mean come on, what the hell is wrong with this organization??? Maybe we should have a team that is competitive for once instead of trying to come up with ideas on how to sneak into the playoffs. Anyone else getting tired of this crap? I have to say it makes me not want to root for this team anymore.
Is the play-in idea a serious suggestion that the Islanders are actively pursuing past the GM meeting or was the GM meeting the end of the story for the idea?
I’ve witnessed “brainstorming” sessions before (for a soft drink) and many of the ideas are gonzo. Most of those ideas never leave the meeting because of how moronic they are. Was this GM brainstorming session done in this spirit? I saw reports that other GMs proposed wacky ideas. Have any of those been reported?
I agree that play-in is idiotic. I can’t crucify Snow for the suggestion unless everyone else was only brainstorming serious, rational, non-idiotic ideas.
I’ve been an Islander fan since their conception but if suggestions like Snow’s are the direction this team wants to take. Then maybe it is time for them to move. What a disgrace.
is this a gag?
Did snow present this before the head shot discussion? This might be the reason why the GMs have proposed to get rid of head shot. After all, Snow had to get hit in the head one or two times to propose such a change. The GMs finally got to see the side effects of head shot up close and personal. If you want to see playoff change then take the top teams 1-16 without EAST vs WEST scenerio. As for this weekend. 3 points and tamby will ave. 5 mins of ice time!!!! PS invest in better scouts!!
I sent the following email to Customer Service:
To Whom It May Concern:
I have been an Islanders fan since the glory days. I was 4 years old when we won our first cup. The mini-tournament idea (Wang’s proposal) that Mr. Snow delivered to the Board, is an unmitigated embarrassment. It pains me and others like me. It reminds me of the torment I received from rangers fans during the “fish stick” era. I think this organization is on the right track personnel-wise which makes it harder for me to understand this proposal. If you don’t think it’s an embarrassment then that’s okay. But consider the multitude of fans that think the same. Islanders Point Blank is an outlet for hard core fans, what some would consider your BASE of fans. Whatever you guys do personnel-wise is your business. But for heavens sake don’t make all the fans open to this kind of ridicule. It also begs the question: Does Mr. Wang feel we are incapable of making the playoffs in the current format and he needs a handicap? Is there no one in Mr. Wang’s inner-circle that that “tells it like it is”? Snow is on the right track but he should have been that person in this case.Extremely embarrassing. Thank you for reading this, I’m just one fan, but I know the vast majority of fans are like-minded.
Best Regards,
A Concerned Fan.
I sent it here, maybe not the best place but I’m, frustrated. I think we should all vent to the front office.
customerservice@newyorkislanders.com
It would have sent the wrong message? Shouldn’t that read, “I was making up for the fleecing that we gave Ottawa last year”? How is acquiring an extra draft pick in the mid second round of a deep draft sending the wrong message?
I’m all for proper value of players. However, waving one hand high in the air and slapping the fans with the other is not the way to go about building trust. Anyone that follows this team knows that is malarkey.
Oh yeah, 2 points at the most. I am guessing that we will come out of this stretch with more injuries than points.
Def one point out of 6. Predicting a shootout loss tonight and the rest are regulation losses.
Isles will prob win all 3 and make me continue to believe that they actually have a chance at the playoffs… ahhhh the joys of being a die-hard!
3 Points..tonight a OT loss vs Blues than loss against the Devils and am end a SO win vs Leafs.
Here in Germany (DEL 15 clubs and League 2 14 clubs)we have pre play-offs 7′th place team vs 10′th place and 8 vs 9. It’s a short best of three serie and the winner going in the first round it works. But the idea from Snow must be a bad joke.
WHY WHY WHY did Garth have to talk at this meeting!!! This is why I had no problem with media silence coming out of the org this year. shut up and take your draft picks and then make your great suggestions when we’re a top tier team.
0 points…or so I hope….
Just a bunch of Snow haters here. Of course, details would have to be considered, but was it really a bad idea? There was less criticism of this idea in other news posts than here. He’s just pushing the envelope. It’s what you do in business. It did make people think. It’s more provocative than anything. Let’s give it a break. There were ideas a lot worse, anyone remember NBC’s glowing puck? The format should change to make the months of Feb-March more interesting. Wild card format for 8 thru 12? …may be not 8-16. Is that better? I would not mind seeing the return of 1 vs. 16 again.
Wow CB, really stoking the flames with this post. I like how you didn’t go into too much detail about how there are a lot of stupid ideas that get discussed at the GM meetings. There was also a proposal this year to make overtime 8 minutes split between 4 on 4 and 3 on 3, allowing the all-star teams to be picked by captains, and a few other winners. At least the way you put didn’t make it look like the dumbest idea in the world… pysche.
In any case, it’s too bad that Tamby is going to play enforcer minutes because he’s made the best of the shots on goal that he’s gotten as he’s second on the team in shooting percentage. If he had been kept in the lineup earlier this season there’s a possibility that he could be challenging Moulson for the team lead in goals, or possibly be second in scoring. Sounds crazy, but the guy was putting up points before being arbitrarily benched. This is, of course, an anti-scoring lineup though. So, I foresee 2 points out of the possible six.

YES IT IS A BAD IDEA. AN EMBARRASSINGLY BAD IDEA.
0 POINTS!!!! HALL!!!! SEGUIN!!! FOWLER!!!!!! THINK DRAFT PICK!!!!
Prediction : 2pts out of six ….. but at this point i would love to go 0/6. But knowing this team they will take 6/6 … come in 9th. this team has a knack of making you hang on and break your heart. we will be too good to get a top 3 pick and too crappy to make the playoffs. Ahhh its so hard to be an Islander fan….. but i love them anyway…. (sigh)
From what I read. At the GM meetings the other GM’s broke out in laughter when Snow proposed this.
If you want to change the playoffs just expand it from 8 to 10 in each conference and seed it by record regardless of division winners; or if you want to be really nutty, have the playoffs teams seeded 1-16 or 1-20 regardless of conference.
This proposal does make sense for Wang. It eliminates any incentive to spend money on the payroll. Wang knows he can’t make the playoffs with the lowest payroll in hockey especially with gordan n his system. So instead of spending $$ on players n coaches Wang wants every team to make the playoffs.
Wow. Snow has insulted the league and embarrassed himself. Well done.
Hearing this makes me ashamed to be an Isles fan right now. What a joke. God forbid we actually EARN our way into the playoffs.
CB, do you not find this “play-in” idea as ludicrous as the rest of us?
CM:What is the point of the regular season if the teams that are the worst get a shot at the playoffs regardless of how they play? Why spend any money on payroll if we make the playoffs no matter what? This was the dumbest idea I have ever heard for hockey and I can’t believe anybody associated in sports at all could present it. Snow is a moron. Enough of the excuse that Wang made him do it. Snow should be a man and stand up for what is right. He didn’t do it with DP’s contract and he didn’t do it now. The Islanders are the biggest joke in the NHL. I can’t believe that Phoenix’s rebuild happened so quickly and with Maloney at the top! This has to be a nightmare. Backup goalie to GM. Perfect plan
Its nice to get everyones hopes up with this “Bailey will gain XP in the playoffs” bit but BPT may not even make the playoffs this year. Sure they are 4 points up but there are four teams below them that have games at hand, including Providence which has played 3 less games. As a SoundTiger STH, the playoffs may not be a reality so let’s calm down with this playoff talk. Even if they make the playoffs, they will be one and done. Plenty of XP in that, right?
How embarrasing…so the stategy is finish last every year.
Wow Garth… thanks for that embarrassment… In addition, he should’ve traded more of the free agents. Clearly he didn’t think we’d make the playoffs, or he wouldn’t have traded Sutton.
Stop thinking that us Isles fans know nothing about our team, Garth. Some of us seem to know more than you right now.
Next, Garth will perform the shim sham sand dance.
Geez, last time I checked the Islanders are a professional sports club. I would hope that means our management and team representatives would act professionally when they gather with their peers, and not offer up moronic proposals like Snow’s play-in for seeds 8-15. That is the absolute worst idea I’ve heard of in quite awhile, and I’m embarrassed as a fan that it came from the Islanders corner. It’s pony tricks like this that makes the rest of the league always want to take a dump on us.
We still have a long ways to go…
Three points.
Snow realizes that even if the team were to miraculously win out, jump over six other teams, and gain the eight seed that we would get pulverized by Washington. This is not a team that could beat ANYBODY in the playoffs in its current stage of development. So the strategy is to again collect the highest draft choice, thus the trade of Sutton. Snow can’t SAY that he’s tanking this season, so he throws some nonsense out to the media. What else COULD he do?? The fact is you have to be bad for a while in this league and draft well consistently before you get good. He certainly started with nothing in the cupboard three years ago.
As for not trading a goalie, I’m as bewildered as the next guy. I’m not even gonna touch the play-in idea.
With the islanders luck we will get 2 SO wins and a SO loss for only God knows how many points.
This will screw our chance at a top 3 and the pick we get will tear his ACL.
that proposal had to come from wang.
I say 1 point in 3 games. Hoping for 0 points in 3 games. Let’s go Blues. Isles, keep losing and make sure Toronto catches you in the standings. Need as many ping pong balls as possible
Did Snow have a power point presentation, now that would have been funny
That would be the only thing in this organization that you could describe with the word “power”.
I have a GREAT idea that is better than Garth’s:
Any team finishing outside the top 7 in each conference will automatically get the #8 seed if they finish with a point total equaling a prime number. If there are multiple ‘prime number’ teams, then the tiebreak will be based on which team’s players have the largest number of consonants in their last names.
Shouldn’t a team with difficult to pronounce last names have an advantage? I mean, it makes as much sense as Garth’s proposal, right?
I have heard alot of stupid ideas in my life, but this has to be the 2nd dumbest I have heard this month. The first was when they reached out to me to renew my ticket subsciption.
Im a fan of removing the loser point, and the shootout. If we remove those from the equation, the Islanders would have 13 regulation wins…
I was thinking the exact opposite of Snow. Punish the teams that try to sell off players. Have the teams that miss the playoffs select in reverse draft order. So if you tank going down the stretch you don’t get a lottery pick you get to pick just before the last team to make the playoffs. For example, the 17th best record would pick first overall and the last playoff seed would remain in the 16th spot. This keeps up the competition until the last game of the year and teams would have an incentive to win, not lose for draft position.
2 points. Hopefully when I am there Sunday against the leafs.
Once again Islanders management has embarassed this team, good job, keep up the great work, Garth.
CB - if it weren’t for the lunacy of Wang & Snow, I’m not sure you would have something so fan-agitating to write about in your blog every single day!
For those who indicate the play-in smells of Wang, I would imagine a true GM would resign before making that suggestion in front of his peers. Think about it … that idea alone may result in Snow never being hired by another NHL team again. That’s how bad I think it is perceived by the rest of the league. Of course Snow won’t have to worry about that as long as Wang owns this team as Snow will presumably have the GM job as long as he wants it.
The play-in idea clearly comes from Wang.Right up there with the Sumos. Snow was just the sucker that had to lose face and bring it up. Stupid idea. Just what a team that spends the $ and works hard to make a playoff spot wants to do. Lose it to a forever rebuilding cheap-scate like Wang.
I don’t get it - It has been suggested and the majority of fans and writers believe that the Isles are on a big austerity kick until there is some resolution of where the franchise will ultimately land. Then why does Wang pull the China training gig? I’m not a travel agent but my guess is that when all the expenses for 40+ players + staff food, travel, hotels transportation, equip. etc are totaled it will come to at leat mid 6 figures. and people speculate that Sutton was at least a partial salary dump. comments?
The NHL needs to get rid of the instigator rule. That will end the hits to the head. The league needs to get back to basics. Hockey was so much more fun to watch in the 80’s.
Also- Snow is a clown and needs to go…but that’ll never happen so long CW owns the team. Man, I wish I were a billionaire a few times over. I would buy the team, fire Snow and Gordon and Dey and hire REAL hockey people and I would build a BRAND NEW arena and practice facility and oh yeah, spend money on talent.
isles will get 2 points here…hopefully tonite-im going to game-hmmm..maybe unfortunately….isles management=embarrassing
Good for Columbus, I think the extra point for an OT/SO loss is so ridiculous. It made sense when there were ties. It encouraged teams to try and win in overtime. Now that there is always a winner, it is completely useless and I can’t believe it remains.
even if we won that round robin-we would get our lunch handed to us in the first round
The players are not going to take the ice and TRY to lose. I’d say 3 of 6, tops.
The “play in” idea is just silly. Why play an 82 game season if you’re going to do that?
Win in SO(3-2) vs St. L(Tamby Shootout winner)
Loss to Devils(4-2)
Loss in OT(4-3) Toronto
3 out of a possible 6 points.
I think it should be 1 pt for a shootout win and 0 points for a shootout loss. Why a league gives the same points for a shootout win and a regulation win is silly. No real league would ever do that. CB, you say that these 3 games are winnable, but isn’t that what the Islanders oppponents are saying? 2 points.
Four points would be a disaster. How about zero points? That’s the only thing that will help this team in the long run.
Let’s see, 4 out 6 points…..ah….no.
Stick a fork in them, they are so done.
You can’t have Freddie “The Last” Meyer play 2nd pair, 20+ minutes against the Flyers. It’s hard to believe he has played in 250 NHL games. The less said….
It’s time to bring up the kids like Martin, Joensuu and Klementyev and stopped wasting ice on the likes of Jackman, Gillies, Sims and Weight.
Let’s see what the kids have and start to get ready for nexy year.
and the gong show goes on
OK - let me be the cock-eyed optimist here. We get 6, that’s right, 6 points in these 3 games. Tavares and Okposo go on a tear as they finally realize they are NHL players. Roloson, realizing he’s here for at least another season, has 3 shut-outs and solidifies his place as the team MVP this season. Ok, maybe Biron gets a start and he proceeds to get a shut-out to show the league he deserves a contract next season from some goaltending challenged team. This is gonna be fun. Watch the wins roll in fellow Islander loyalists! It’s Hockey Time!!!
I can see it now…the Isles win like 8 of the next 11, Rolo goes 4-1-1. But all of a sudden…Rick Dipietro SEEMS to be ready to play again…we all know what happens next.
I don’t find the proposal that embarassing. I already think the league’s ridiculous loser point system is embarassing to start with.
Now I don’t think that teams ranked in the bottom 4 of the conference should get a shot. But if Snow proposed a play in for teams 8,9, 10, and 11 that wouldn’t be a terrible proposal because they way I see it the loser point system is just as stupid…so why not.
2 pts. Shootout losses to Blues and Leafs. This team is not beating the Devils! Who the hell wants points at this point. They are worthless. Isles NEED a top 5 pick. Top 3 would be even better. Keep piling up the talent!
chris… love the jabs towards let it snow let it snow let it snow. what a stupid idea. and to pitch that being one of the worst teams in the league. wow. if they were one of the top teams then it’s just one of a bunch of silly ideas coming out of those meetings but to do that in the position they are in is embarrassing. love it.
Snow is a joke. How about putting some talent around the young guys and getting some size on this team and we can make the playoffs legitimately.
0 points is my goal. we need to battle for a bottom 3 spot now and start fresh next year.
170- Good post. And I think StL and NJ are looking at these games at must-wins for them, rather than just winnable. Toronto is on the same level as the Isles.
2 points. in that every nhl game, reguardless of an overtime win or loss is worth 2 points.
the loser gets a nice parting gift. no points.
homestand. 5 points. we don’t quit, could really use one of the top two picks, and get one as a result of the draft lottery.
In order to have a balanced point system. I suggest the winner in regulation should get 3 points. Winner in OT/SO should get 2 and loser in OT/SO should still get 1 point.
I am consistently shocked how the Islanders sales team is somehow able to convince people, in this recession, to spend their limited entertainment dollars on watching this level of talent play hockey.
They must have salespeople that can sell ice to eskimos. I haven’t seen a single game this year with attendance under 6,000, yet the team hardly wins.
Congratulations, Isles sales team!
I was all about Chris Kreider leading up to last year’s draft.. The kid has size, speed and skills… When we traded up to #12 and took DeHaan, I was super pissed… DeHaan wasn’t even the best defenseman on the board at that point (Dmitri Kulikov), yet alone the best prospect…. I hope Dehaan turns out to be a great pick, but there were better options on the board.. I just read too much about DeHaan’s lack of size being an issue in the NHL.. and he’s hurt already… I can’t see this kid clearing out anyone from in front of the net.
The reason the league gives 2pts for an OT win and 1 pt to the loser is because it keeps most teams in the playoff picture. But it cheapens the game. The Wall Street Journal had an article that revealed that since the OT pts were put in place, there are less winning goals being scored in the last 10 minutes of a regulation game (as teams get conservative and make sure they get at least 1 pt). If they want to reward OT wins they should move to:
Regulation win = 3pts
Regulation loss = 0 pts
OT win = 2pts
OT loss = 1pt
IMHO JoeRiverside
The Isles will NEVER win anything as long as Charles Wang owns the team. He is not serious about the product on the ice, and he can care less about the fans. This idea suggests that Snow wants to tell people he has no interest in building a top notch team and will remove himself from the responsibility to the paying fans who support this team day in and day out of putting the best product on the ice.
I really like Snow’s idea actually. It keeps interest up. In the America East Conference for basketball there is a play-in game and even though the teams aren’t great they always compete hard and it’s entertaining.
ever since ‘93 it has been about the “future” i say they lose all three games and continue to hope they get a good prospect in June. this franchise is such a joke I don’t expect anything positive for a long time.
keep raising those season ticket prices and not putting a good product on the ice Charles!
What happens if the rebuild truly comes to fruition and we see real progress over the next couple of years? When will the torches and pitchforks be put away?
Terrance: i’m all for trashing the team… rah rah rah… but they do have a winning record at home. 4 games over. there were lots of fun games at the coliseum this year. the sales people are not magicians… the isles still have a fanbase… they improved on last year, jt was a factor, stronger goaltending. it was just a good job by all up until a month and a half ago… then crash.
Snow, save the BS, we’re not buying. Last slight chance of making the playoffs departed with Andy Sutton. Play-in idea - can you say dumb and dumber.
Should we starting wearing Brown Bags over our heads like Saints fans did in the 80’s
I cannot believe ! Even Garth Snow is not so stupid…or is he ????
I’m sad,sad Islanders’ fan.
it’s a gag, right?
I will say 1 win 2 losses. I cant wait for a good islanders team.
It is almost mind boggling that THN ranks the Rangers young players/prospects over the Islanders, especially considering Tavares and Bailey count. I really do not believe it. I mean, the Isles have Tavares and had countless picks the last few seasons. Didn’t the Rangers best prospect pass away last season (Cherenov??).
Lets give the eighth seed to the team that has the lowest amount of fights during the regular season. If a tie breaker were needed I would suggest the team with the lower payroll be awarded the spot.
Someone above said that St Louis and NJD’s need to win, but Toronto is in the sames shoes as Isles. I think Toronto sees it as a must win. Boston owns their 1st round pick. Image the embarrassment if Boston gets into the playoffs and wins the lottery!
as many have said before me, the idea is laughable. but wang is a businessman, as are the 29 other owners in the league. the purpose of the business of the nhl is to find new ways to increase revenue. by the islanders putting the idea on the table, it gets minds thinking. for the last 30 or so years, 16 teams have made the playoffs every year, even when there were only 21 teams in the league. but even with the increase to 30 teams, the playoff structure has remained the same. maybe it is time to increase the amount of teams that reach the playoffs without going as far as offering a round robin. perhaps giving teams 1-6 a bye, and then the 7 thru 10 teams a best of five playoff series. giving 20 teams playoff action will make it a lot more exciting down the road, and give a little more to the 9th and 10th position that normally just miss out on playoffs and are rewarded with the lowest draft pick of non-playoff teams.
1 point.. 2 max
(189) Tux - When the owner and GM stop lying to their fan base
Does anyone know Wang personally? He comes across as “eccentric” like a guy who wouldn’t even be able to hold any job. Somethings very odd about his personality…wanting to b friends w young players? I don’t get it.
Someone said Phoenix’s rebuild has been quicker. It’s all goaltending!!! They have only scored 9 goals more than the Isles. Let’s not forget they have ripe talent in Shane Doan, Vrbata having a breakout year and on D is Aucoin and Jovanowski. Someone else said Snow was left with nothing in the cupboard when he became GM. I agree. This is what happens when the last GM screwed up royally.
This idea came from someone that does not know hockey.(can you say Wang & Dey)? I can’t for the life of me believe the idea was Garth’s However, the fact that he did not warn Wang that it was totally ridiculous makes him an accessory to the crime. And, yes, it should be a crime to put out the kind of message that says you know you will not be winning any-time soon. C’mon guys, I am truly tired of always making up excuses for you! Act like you care……a little, anyway!
look, I’ve loved this franchise for years and I’ve followed them all season on nhl center ice and it’s clear as day that this team has no shot at making the playoffs. 10 points out with 6 teams between them and the 8th seed means we should be looking at the draft.
As far as “three winnable games” let’s get real. With our current defense and lack of scoring there is no chance we’re winning two games, much less three. I think st.louis will dominate tonight and I don’t give us much chance against New Jersey at all. If they win one of the three and take a second to overtime it’ll be a success. Let’s focus on the draft, let the rest of the season play out (hopefully without any further serious injuries) and look forward to the summer and next season.
This season is over.
The coliseum is completely empty.. Overheard a guard say maybe 5000 tops tonight
JETS- Just end the Season..
And to top it off the fanboni just died and there are 10 guys pushing it to the exit
even though my tone is negative, I’ll be at GM Place when the Isles visit Vancouver on Tuesday next week. Sitting in section 117 and will be cheering on JT and KO. All I really wanted to see this season was improvement - and we saw some.
The things they need to fix next season are fairly critical and not easy. The penalty kill and power play need to be MUCH MUCH better as our offense will still be on the low end next season.
I was hoping for one of two things this season. A playoff berth, or a top 5 draft pick. One is still a possibility. I would love it if Taylor Hall was still available when the Isles pick in the draft. I’m far more excited about that than the rest of the season, but I do want to watch the rest of the games and hopefully JT can score another 4-5 goals before the end of the year.
Just watched Snow on the pre-game, and I gotta give the man some credit. Kinda hinted July 1st has been good to the Isles, however…lets wait and see
Biron in net
CB - Great article … I think Snow has the right idea … but I don’t think the bottom 4 teams in each conference should have a shot at the playoffs. Reserve the last 2 spots for teams that have to duke it out in a preliminary round robin tournament.
I emailed you an old format with some tweaking that was modeled after my old league’s format. Let me know if ya think that would work in the NHL.
Does everyone here want to turn the clock back to the Milbury years? How bout the Nolan years, you know, bring in role players and everyone elses flotsum and jetsum and sneak into the 8th spot and get blasted in the 1st round? This is gonna be a multi-year project. Snow made a mistake when he said the objective was to make the playoffs this year recently, but what exactly did you want him to say? Personally, I think they’ve take steps forward this year. JT, KO and JB were a given, but they also found Schremp, Moulson, Hillen and McDonald.
I watched Snow on pregame and came away thinking this guy is drinking Wangs koolaid, he reminds me of Omar dancing around really answering the questions? Im left thinking its worse than the Mets and i didnt think anyone could be worse at running a team than Minaya. Signing overaged players, dishing out long contracts to players that have really not proved anything at all? Are Snow and minaya exchanging advice??
how can you say we are rebuilding when with an open slot with schremps injury, GILLES, WEIGHT, JACKMAN, PARK, and SIM all play while tamby sits??
even if you don’t like the guy, you have to admit, it just doesn’t make sense.
I don’t get it anymore.
Gillies with a big hit then protects Biron, keep him up! Give it a rest with Tamby, he did nothing for so long. Love that guy.
Anyone know what that thing Gillies did to Johnson is called? I haven’t seen one in so long….a hit or a check? I think that is it.
Teaser going to break Howie said Snow’s going to talk about the need to get bigger on defense. He said the same thing last year. Glad your going to talk about it BUT DO IT!
Well that settles it. Garth Snow just basically told the entire world they don’t plan on being contenders for a very long time. Why else would that idiot suggest such a stupid concept?! And they laughed at him? I am at the end of my rope wit this team. I love our young guys but I’m afraid Garth is going to ruin them in the long run. I have one foot out the door and will wait until the end of next season before I pull the other one through and close it forever. If I do I will move into Jersey or Phillies house and root against the Islanders like I never have before. I am so sick of this mickey mouse B.S.. What a complete embarrassment this organization is and I feel so sorry for our young players.
MATTY ICE!
Enough with tambellini. The guy had 2 years to show what he could do. He did nothing, but score in shootouts. He’s a hack.
Garth is putting on pounds as fast as bad ideas…
Maybe if they take hitting, fighting, goals and passion out of hockey, then the islanders will be competitive. Fishsticks forever!
It’s frustrating to listen to Garth. He sounds as if he’s convinced his bone head ideas are good ones. At least he admitted he needs to ad to his defense first. Maybe two big fast d men.
I like the idea to rebuild, I just don’t think Garth is the right man to make these personel decisions.
how can you say tamby had 2 years? he never played on a line with anyone to help his skill set and in 2 years he prob hasnt played the equivalent of a season. you need consistant playing time to gain confidence and find your game. he could be the 3rd leaading scorer on this team if he was given the shot
CB that wasn’t a joke???? My God, lets just pretend garth got what he wanted, how does he expect to sell one seat to a regular season game?
Snow and Gordon are clueless. You put Trevor Gillies in the lineup over Tambellini. You know what, the fact is Tamby’s game is now in the dumps BECAUSE of the way he has been handled by management. He had 7 goals and 13 points through his first 20 games. You want to tell me Gordon would bench any of his other players with those numbers. Very UNprofessional.
We could hang a banner..2009-2010 NHL participation Eastern Conference (gold level ticket )
Ridiculous that Gillies plays over Tamby. Why not let him play out the rest of the games and gain some confidence? No more doghouse. The team has nothing left to play for anyway.
#222
must be all the koolaid
….Im in the camp of Tambellini not getting a fair shot. Go Simmer!!!!!
Tamby is a gutless wimp who has been given every shot in the world to play. He’s personifies the soft, meek crappola we see on the ice in Uniondale.
I loved when Howie asked Snow about Witt and Snow just rambled on and on without making a bit of sense and never came close to answering the question. And how’s that youth movement coming along with Tamby sitting again? This is just sad.
park cost them the game
mark my words
Freudian slip from Snow on the interview between the 2nd and 3rd periods: “…we hope to make the playoffs next year.” He’s conceded to the public what we already knew. This whole “playoff push” crapola is just to keep marketing busy, make Hockey Night Live seem relevant to make $$$ for MSG, and snooker a few to buy tickets.
I think # 8 and #13 hit it on the head.
Snow had to pitch the idea as per Wang - it’s just too out of touch with American sports.
The regular season is to see who moves to the playoffs. With this idea - the regular season means nothing and you jeopardize a good draft pick if you sucked all year and just happen to string together a few wins to move up.
I’m still shaking my head!
Tambi - could it be that is being held aside like this is that he is a RA. If someone offers him a contract we pick up a draft pick that way?????
someone help me with that protocall please.
I say 2, maybe three points tops. Too many teams between us and the # 8 spot so I’m thinking 1 point would be just fine!
Hey Big Dog, did you pay Park off? haha
That power play is whats wrong with this organization as a whole. 4 on 3 powerplay with a chance to win in OT and you send out fricken Bruno Gervais. Are we kidding? What a god damn joke.
Weight, Moulson, Gervais, and Streit as our 4-3 PP unit…WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?
Shoot out, too bad Schremp is out
Weight and Gervais should never be on a power play. ND HIT THE NET FOR ONCE! MAKE THE GOALIE MAKE A SAVE!!!!!
2 more losses and my prediction will be correct….haha…we suck and I love it. Top 3 pick babyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!
T’was weeks before the playoffs and all at the rink. Would see Garth and Charles laughed and chuckled because they knew we stink.
Not a fan could found with the seats bare. Visions of a top draft choice would soon be there.
The players on the bench all snuggled in sweat. Knew they they could tune out Gordon with nuttin to fret.
With only 4 weeks left…You could almost hear…thank god cause we are outta here.
If you believe Snow and Wang on anything your just plain stupid.!!!!!!
See Comment #68. So far, so good.
Foxwoods Blackjack …Islanders Season Tix? At least with Foxwoods you see who is screwing you. And your getting free drinks. LOL
NHL commish needs to have a little pow-wow w/ CW and Snow about the state of this franchise and the direction it appears to be heading down. That suggestion in itself about playoffs really summarizes what this management team/owner is all about.CW is not about winning, doesn’t care about hockey. What he wants is to enhance his investment anyway he can w/o investing any real resources(like a professional hockey staff from front office to scouts to coach to GM)He wants to be a control-freak owner w/ 2cnd rate people around him and pitch these cookey ideas on how to fool the fanbase w/ an inferior product. This team has not been right since the Pickett ownership and its sad that the league has allowed this to go on.You want to expedite the Isles up in the air arena deal throw in the fact the NHL will use the Rags and Sabres as barganing chips. If the polititions on the Isle can’t seem to get motivated maybe NY losing 3 teams might motivate them.Crazy idea but so was the everyone makes the playoffs deal.
I like the ideal of a play-in, but with 8th & 9th placed teams. I did not hear any laughing when the 1984 Stanley Cup final was played in a “2-3-2″ format to save on travel!!
Until the NHL stops rewarding a point for an OT/SO loss, regulation wins should be worth 3 pts.
Was Taveras even eligible to play in the AHL? I thought that as long as he has Jr eligibility, he could not play in the AHL.
With a team struggling for offense how do yo justify Gillies over Tamby!! We were lucky to get a point last nite!!
number 1 on the shopping list for the Islanders Organization should be a GM that’s not a laughing stock. we haven’t had that since Torre.
