ISLANDERS 4 MONTREAL 3 (shootout)
Islanders now just one game below .500

by Chris Botta on April 6th, 2010 at 6:31 pm

FanHouse: Islanders Crash Canadiens’ Clinch Party

9:45 pm, NVMC: Refusing to let the Canadiens celebrate on their ice, the Islanders get a goal late by Frans Nielsen and then Matt Moulson, Nielsen and Martin Biron (2-for-2 in saves) get the extra point in the shootout. Scott Gordon’s Never Say-die-landers do it again. Bravo. Blake Comeau scored a first period goal off hard work and a beautiful pass by Sean Bergenheim. Later in the first, Comeau blocked a shot with his foot and was lost for the rest of the game. His foot injury will be evaluated on Wednesday. Bergenheim was dominant. Kyle Okposo is this season’s winner of the Bob Nystrom Award. Since tonight was their last Coliseum appearance, mercifully, say goodbye to these things:

  4. avatar Sidd Finch says:

we need the photographer from the buffalowildwings commercial with that nuclear flashbulb at the game. a massive strobe shot just before the shot on the Isles shooters and Isles goalies should seal the deal there… LOL!!!

  5. avatar Chris R says:

The Islanders better lose today. To be honest, I’d want them to be in a good spot to draft Erik Gudbrandson.

  6. avatar Sidd Finch says:

Speaking of the draft, ask a couple of Canadiens fans how Doug Wickenheiser panned out with hometown boy Denis Savard just waiting to put on a Habs sweater. It happens to the best of us!!!

  7. avatar steve says:

    Go Habs Go!

  8. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Way too many Habs fans here for a weeknight game.

  9. avatar Will C. says:

Win or Lose, it’s a positive outcome, enjoy! I liker to see some Gillies brawlin’ tonight!

  10. avatar Rob from LB says:

Hopefully they don’t have the bus loads of Habs fans like last season.

    I can’t find the game!

  16. avatar Pritchett54 says:

Found it on cspan2, I love being a minor league franchise.

  17. avatar John Goscinski says:

I take that back, its on 79

  18. avatar Rich M says:

we better lose tonite on cspan2 nobody will see us and we can get in the lottery

  19. avatar The new isles gm says:

What channel is the game on? Like the actual number of the channel?

  20. avatar C.J. says:

  21. avatar Devon says:

  22. avatar gary says:

    what a joke franchise.
Why don’t they put the Rangers on all channels???

still no HD on fios anyway – this picture and broadcast sucks.

we have no respect from our own network

  23. avatar NickyL says:

Ugh! I know it won’t happen anytime soon, but I pray and wish that the Isles go to SNY at some point.

  24. avatar Ric S. says:

Ok so I’m in Suffolk county with Cablevision. I don’t have iO. It’s not on 14, 66 or 79. Help.

  25. avatar Jersey Steve says:

GO ISLANDERS! And Tampa and Carolina and Columbus and Florida…..

  26. avatar Staten Islander says:

Time warner 179 in Staten Island if thats any help

  27. avatar NYIChooch says:

    Cablevision – Suffolk County – channel 79.

  28. avatar dedshark says:

is there an HD channel for the isles game that anyone knows of?

  29. avatar NYIChooch says:

AWESOME picture quality by the way. Reminds me of watching Sports Channel in the 80′s on my 9″ Sony Black & White TV.

  30. avatar walter says:

it looks like watching a game from the 80′s

  31. avatar will s says:

At least this is the last time we have to see these lame jerseys

  32. avatar Staten Islander says:

ok, who told Comeau he was Mike Bossy?

  33. avatar john says:

i smell #7 pick, connolly or neiderreiter. if we couldnt get the top 2 forwards, we might as well get 2nd tier.

  34. avatar Nick says:

Great. I cant watch the game because my cable box broke and of course the game has to be on channel 79 instead of 72. Anyway, these jeresys are finally out after this game

  35. avatar Johnnyjet says:

Keep dreaming! We are not one of the worst five teams on the league. Note: Kevin Poulin named CHL goalie of the week ! Comeau could hit 20 this year.

  36. avatar James says:

I would love neiderreiter, did you see the guy in the olympics? He is a madman lol

I think he would be a great addition to the Isles

  37. avatar Frans Dish says:

Damn, Comeau 17 goals where the hell did that come from. Look forward to seeing him play a full season next year, I feel like he’s turning into a better Hunter, hits and can possibly be a 20 goal scorer for our team.

  38. avatar JETS/METS/ISLES says:

Anywhere to watch the game on the web?

  39. avatar jimmy says:

incredible i thought i was watching a blackhawks game for the past 20 minutes

  40. avatar James says:

Bailey playing possessed in that 1st period. This team is playing with a ton of confidence right now

They aren’t going to be in the playoffs, but playing well at the end of the season, against teams that are trying to get into the playoffs and are desparate for points, that is a confidence boost for the team.

  41. avatar boss15 says:

Isles look darn good so far, if they replace Sim and Park with players that have a little more offensive upside they would make huge gains next season. Game is online at ATDHE but its in french.

  42. avatar Ed says:

Goodbye Slashing Pumpkins jerseys! You will be erased from my memory bank

  43. avatar Staten Islander says:

I wouldn’t mind these jerseys as 3rd jerseys. The white waterwing jerseys I DETEST.

  44. avatar john says:

i want the isles to participate in nxt tuesday’s lottery. go habs. 3-1 canes.

  45. avatar BrianAlbany says:

I feel so bad for the Isles fans at this game with all those freakin Habs fans there.

I’m torn between rooting for them to lose for the good of our future, or for us to win just out of respect to all the Isles fans at the game!

  46. avatar Staten Islander says:

    2-1 Habs, thank God

  47. avatar Isles 420 says:

ok good they are losing now

  48. avatar Jersey Steve says:

As least we haven’t packed it in like the Lightning. They are an embarrassment.

  49. avatar scottd says:

Say this for Tampa, they know how to wave the white flag.

  50. avatar john says:

canes dont care about lottery. panthers and lightning have already packed for the summer. funny that they finish against each other for 2 games.

  51. avatar Andre says:

Tampa should not be allowed to participate in the lottery. They are a classic example of a disgrace who is tanking on purpose.

  52. avatar scottd says:

If they both lose tonight and both lose the one game they have left after tonight that not against each other, the fact that Tampa and Florida play each other is irrelevant unless the Islanders lose their remaining for games all in regulation. Even if both of those games go OT and they each pick up three points, they’d both finish with 32 wins and 79 points. If the Isles picked up just one point in their last four, they’d finish with 33 wins, 79 points and ahead of both in the standings, 5th from the bottom.

  53. avatar john says:

Scott D: Isles need to find a way to get to Tuesday’s lottery. By any means necessary. The #5 pick could easily turn into Taylor Hall.

  54. avatar JoeRiverside says:

Here’s an idea. When Florida plays Tampa the last two games of the year, give 2 pts to the loser, zero to the winner. Then their fans can see some hockey.

  55. avatar john says:

    Lets go Sabres!!!

  56. Islanders broadcast from 3-D to 19-80 in less than a week wtf?

  57. avatar Shawn says:

    @ #3

There in a playoff hunt and were in a last place hunt, if you want ratings what is your channel going to show?

  58. avatar Viper says:

Those “things” are not so bad compared to the fishsticks jersey! Look forward to the classics though! Go Habs go! (growing up in Quebec and being an Isles fan and Habs hater, never thought I would type those words!)

  59. avatar Bob says:

God, not only is Hunter’s skating bad but his passes tonight have been brutal…is he running scared? No need it is only the Canadiens…

  60. avatar admin says:

Blake Comeau (foot injury) did not take a shift in the second and is now out for the remainder of the game. Evaluated on Wednesday…CB

  61. avatar Bob says:

Chris R post 6….Gudbrandson would be a good size, solid D and more importantly extremely coachable (I know him as he is from here in Orleans, Ontario)

  62. avatar Viper says:

Can you believe the Lightning? I mean, what can you say about this franchise? I just don’t understand. We need an inquiry!

  63. avatar boss15 says:

I like Hunter but he doesn’t fit in with the go go system… Losing more size probably isn’t helpful though.

  64. avatar Examiner says:

Tavares looks great. Can’t wait to see what he’ll bring next year after a full offseason of getting quicker and stronger. He looks so much more mature than he did even just a couple of months ago.

  65. avatar IslesNation says:

If Hunter was even a little better skater I would consider keeping him around but the fact that he is that slow makes his size a moot point. If possible I would cut ties with him and try to get a similar 3rd line winger with more speed. Is Antropov a FA?

  66. avatar Blizzard says:

…I must say I am a little disappointed in Hunter. I expected a little more. He isnt a physical force like seasons past and his lack of scoring has magnified it.

I still think he can be an important role player for this team though. He does bring some size.

  67. avatar Frans Dish says:

Montreal has zero offensive zone time this period other then the counter break away goal. JT looks real good and bergenheim why can’t you play this good every game

  68. avatar john says:

    are u kidding me

  69. avatar mikef says:

this is terrible. why cant we just lose.

  70. avatar ecairns says:

    this is a joke

  71. avatar john says:

a win in ot or shootout most likely means no lottery

  72. avatar Jim M says:

Ok, so the Islanders just tied the game with under 3 minutes to go against a team fighting for their playoff lives. How ironic how absolutely horrible it is. At least Carolina will win..

  73. avatar Nick says:

they are only winning because we want them to, don’t you guys understand? isles fans never win…

  74. avatar Volmeeezy says:

Tampa and Flordia play a home and home the last 2 games of the season .. So for those worried about the lottery , that certainly helps because it guarentees at last 4 points between the 2 teams .. We also play Pittsburg twice and the Devils .. who knows

  75. avatar Isles 420 says:

are you ******* kidding me. WHAT ARE THEY DOING?!?!?! they better lose and carolina win so they are at least in the lottery

  76. avatar john says:

a win in ot will all but kill the isles chances at the lottery

  77. avatar Frans Dish says:

I hate the montreal canadiens with a passion, they’re the new age devils defense the whole third period and now they deserve to lose for playing so god damn passive!

  78. avatar Devon says:

I know many of you are rooting for the team to lose, but this has been among the most entertaining games of the season, and I’ll never root for the other team, especially when it’s a home game and Canadian infiltration. I was at the snow game where Canadian fans outnumbered Isles fans 5-to-1 and they were rude, crude, and snide. I want to send them back to Canada unhappy.

  79. avatar DeHaamonic says:

This is why we needed to trade the goalies. We needed to bottom out this year. It was worth watching MacDonald and Denis for Tavares in the long run.

  80. avatar Devon says:

I’ll take Rollie and Biron back next year, 79.

  81. avatar Isles 420 says:

ok biron is terrible in shootout so well most likely lose

  82. avatar Examiner says:

Wow! What a game! Sorry to disappoint all rooting for a loss. Let the isles fans that paid money to see this game enjoy it.

    Let’s Go Islanders!

  83. avatar steve says:

Why can’t we just lose when we’re supposed to?

  84. avatar Frans Dish says:

haha this team can never get it right

  85. avatar Honnold says:

    Victoire! Fermez la bouche.

  86. avatar Harvey says:

I hate this team. Break my heart by losing when I want them to win and win when I want them to lose. Meaningless. Stupid. A-holes from top to bottom. Jerks.

  87. avatar Phil from Switzerland says:

terrible win for the franchise! they lose when they should win, and win when they should loose!

  88. avatar Frans Dish says:

atleast Frans will have a new Dane to play with in Nino Neidereitter

  89. avatar Ari Haanpaa says:

it is such a tease that they have played so well the past few weeks, if they finish 500 it will be some accomplishment but another young star would have been nice to add to the mix

  90. avatar Czerkawski21 says:

    neidereitter is swiss

  91. avatar Andre says:

Forget the lottery. There goes the chance for Hall. This team is so annoying. Where was this consistency when we needed it?

  92. avatar Mike L says:

I guess Tarasenko, Connelly, or Neiderreiter it is. Not really a bad consolation prize.

  93. avatar gino says:

ok guys, i have said this for years, not just now but for years. to avoid teams of blowing games late in the year to get into the lottery, give the 17th team the 1st pick, 18th team/2nd pick,16th team/3rd pick, etc etc. this will give teams incentive to give 100% all year, not just until there out of the playoffs.

  94. avatar Mad Pete says:

Waive bye bye to the top talent in this years draft.

  95. avatar gino says:

ok guys, to avoid teams of blowing games late in the year to get into the lottery, give the 17th team the 1st pick, 18th team/2nd pick,16th team/3rd pick, etc etc. this will give teams incentive to give 100% all year, not just until there out of the playoffs.

  96. avatar nyislanders93 says:

Winning meaningless games in April shows nothing. If they wanted to play hard they should have done it back when things counted.

gino (92)- Terrible idea. That doesn’t do anything to help the fact that the worst team in the league is usually deserving of a franchise player. Last year’s Islanders would have never improved. This year’s Oilers would never improve with that system.

  97. avatar JJ says:

Sure, it would be nice to get a high draft pick, but I can’t root against my team!

I’m happy to see them win regardless!

  98. avatar The New Isles GM says:

With guys like Matt Martin coming up next year and hopefully a nice free agent signing or two…maybe it’s time to say we’re done with the draft. We proved all year we can hang in there with anyone in the league. Did we blow leads…sure…do we need more size…sure…but those things will be addressed in practice and during July/Aug. At least we’re seeing improvement and progress. Garth’s plan is working and Gordon is doing a fine job. We might not have playoffs this year but at least we can expect next year to be exciting.

  99. avatar Chris A says:

R.I.P. crappy uniforms i’ll take a 500 season as a sign of progress

  100. avatar Yashin for President says:

Be ready to pick 6-8. this is horrible

  101. avatar beachchica says:

This may not be a popular stance, but I hope the Islanders end the season with a winning record! I,for one, am proud of all the young player who have made big strides!
Thanks for finishing the season with heart!

  102. avatar Mezz21 says:

I’m just glad the pajama jersey will finally be retired.

  103. avatar billy says:

    great, exciting game!!!!!
one minus though……why on earth did gordon put KO on the OT PP? He had a very mediocre game, none more evident as the shot he took at Halaks chest, especially considering Bergie’s one man show.
a second minus….Bailey was awful tonight imo.
other than that, i thought we showed massive massive character by coming out the day after we’re eliminated from contention and beat a team that’s still alive!!!
and hey you have to give credit to halak, tavs should’ve had a couple tonight if it weren’t for him.

is it october yet? i cant wait for next year!!!!!!

  104. avatar IslesInPA says:

If Comeau and Bergy can maintain this production ALL YEAR, it will be like 2 nice draft picks. Just win.

  105. avatar Devon says:

What beachchica said. To see this team go from complete crap to potentially .500 in one year is more heartwarming than bringing in a top pick ever could be. Especially in the uncertainty of the Lighthouse project and our team on Long Island, at least there’s promise that this team has started to turn the corner.

  106. avatar Harvey says:

Never-say-Dielanders…how about Always the stupid-head franchise? They could screw up a wet dream.

  107. avatar DRIVE45 says:

The only positive from tonight’s game is that we can finally say goodbye to those dreadful uniforms. They’ll be winning these same meaningless games at the end of next season also. Half the D-men are AHL caliber and they can’t lose. Give me a break! This franchise just doesn’t get it.

  108. avatar frogfisherman says:

This team is pure pain. And really looking forward to bergenheim getting back to his usual awfulness when the games start for real next year again. Anyone who is happy about tonight needs to readjust. Really, are you going to care about this win 10 minutes from now? These last 12 games have set the franchise back…and there is no way around that.

  109. avatar brian says:

wasting draft pick position. you cant tell them to go out and lose, but im really ticked off

  110. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

if not for DP saga this year that lead to bad losing streak for isles. We would be in playoffs this year.

    Isles are better than Habs.

Tavares is now bullying guys along boards.
just wait till he puts on 10lbs of muscle this summer.

bergie has definately made himself part of the core again.

i thought Bailey played with nice edge tonight too.

  111. avatar Devon says:

You people who want to lose: I don’t get it. Do you want the players to not play hard? Do you want guys like Sim, Jackman, and Gillies to play 20 minutes? The fact is, these are players with pride who go out there and compete as best they can, and that’s not going to change just because you want them to lose. I’m overwhelmingly glad to see that even after being eliminated, this team still showed up and supported their coach and the PAYING FANS who showed up and ROOTED ON THEIR TEAM. Sorry, but if you cheered when the Habs scored, I don’t want you on my side.

  112. avatar Harvey says:

Brian I agree. I don’t fault them for winning but these garbage wins take away the chance for an elite forward, which we DESPERATELY NEED.

  113. avatar Craig says:

I’ve said it all year. The islanders needed to be bad one more year to get one more excellent draft choice and then try and sign 2 good free agents (if we could get any) and then we could actually turn some heads. Of course with them winning at the end of the year, the chances of us getting hall, seguin or fowler seems gone. However, there are another 6 players who may turn out to be pretty good players. The two players I’d like to see the Islanders draft are Kirill Kabanov, who was considered to be a top 3 pick at the beginning of the year but with injuries has slipped. He has top end talent and could be the best player in this draft if he stays healthy and matures. The other is Brett Connolly who was also in the top of this draft class but also battled injuries. When you pick 6-10, I think it’s worth taking a chance on someone who has top end talent. I’d be ok with us taking a dman but the only one I really would like is cam fowler. The others don’t seem to have the offensive talent the Islanders require. This team needs to fill a lot of hole. I’m encouraged by the progress of players like Bailey (though I only see him as a 3rd line energy guy, sort of like jason blake), Comeau who I’d like to see develop into a 2nd liner but in reality is another 3rd liner. Okposo, Tavares and Moulson should be kept together next year to see what they can do. There’s loads of talent in those 3 players that together I think they can help explore.

  114. avatar Examiner says:

Like all you complainers are saying, this team loses when they are supposed to win and wins when they’re supposed toblose. So what on the Coliseum’s choppy ice makes you think they would win the lottery if they got there? They will pick between 5th and 7th and get a good prospect with upside.

    Let’s get off the ledge.

  115. avatar beachchica says:

Thanks Devon. I don’t know how any fan could root against their own team. The young guys are working really hard and showing a lot of character. I for one feel pretty good about next year!

  116. avatar Dave says:

DP, Thanks for costing Isles a playoff spot..again…if not for Dubie’s miracle run in 07, wed have another pretty good playoff drought going.

  117. avatar Big Van Vader says:

Hey, i “wanted” the Isles to lose tonight as well. But as the game went on and the Isles kept playing hard, i found it very difficult to root against them. That, and the fact that the Habs fans were there again in force chanting and laughing and having a great time. I’ll never forget when I went to the game last season and they were chanting “lets go Rangers”.
    Low class fans.
I want Seguin but with the way Toronto has rolled over and Tampa and Florida laying eggs all over the place, they all should be kicked out of the league. Especially Tampa. They should be investigated they’ve tanked so much.

Two with the Pens, one with NJ. If THOSE teams mail it in against us, then I’ll just throw my hands up and say, “whatever”. And by the way, is it just me or are these “playoff” teams not very good? Philly, Habs, Boston. VERY average. Isles pick up a scorer or two, and a d-man, with the continued development of the young guys, the playoffs should easily be within reaach.

  118. avatar va says:

Well at least Carolina won, we have that going for us! Looks like we will finish 5th or 6th. Knowing Snow he will trade up to stock pile more picks. Bruins are looing pretty with that trade with the Leafs! Boy do the Leafs look stupid now!

  119. avatar gino says:

nyislanders93(97)-why terrible?why should last place teams be “rewarded” for futility? the nordiques blowing games to get lindros, penguins blowing games to get mario, tampa blowing games for the last 3 years and you think they should be rewarded for that?

  120. avatar On Edge says:

I want to see them win every game – sorry CB – I think you have to learn how to win and will take all the experiece you can get even at this time of year.

Forget about copying the Penguins blueprint for success. We don’t have a Sidney or Malkin. This team will find it’s own path regardless of where they pick in the draft – if they do their homework, get lucky and draft well.

NJ, Buffalo and other models are the path to take as far as a resonable comparison.

  121. avatar StevieL says:

Alright Garth it will be up to you! No impact player for us in the draft this year! your year 3 rebuild will now have to happen in the FA market this summer. Let’s see what you got!!

  122. avatar Need-a-Cup says:

Would have loved another 1-3 first round pick. But you can’t purposely tank with a young developing club. If Snow can pickup a top six/25-30 goal scoring forward and a top 4 D-man (or 2), I think next year we pick up another 15-20 points, make the playoffs and take it from there. This season is proof of definite progress and steering the team in the right direction.

  123. avatar IsleFan73 says:

This hoping to lose for better draft position is outrageous. I pay good money for my season tix, and I never want to see my team tank. With our young team, I would much rather go into next year playing well, then playing like crap. Lets go Islanders, and lets win the rest of our games!!

  124. avatar Hey Nooowww!!!! says:

Taveras and Bergy were really good tonight. If Bergy did the same thing at the end of last season as well. I hope he can find his game early next season and keep it. Hope comeus ok. KO hasn’t been taking many shots. Where is he? Hoped he would go for 20 goals for the season

  125. avatar Numbers65 says:

I liked Nino Neidereitter at the WJC. He played like a star. I was hoping we could get him since then. Good season. Cut out the losing streak and we looked great this season. Nobody expected what we got out of this team. LET’S GO ISLES!
    Good bye pathetic uniform!

  126. avatar Blizzard says:

…my prophecy unfortunately has come to pass. My prediction was the Islanders where going to suck it up and fall out of the playoof race then go on a tear when all the games mean nothing and wind up with about as high a draft pick as you can get with out making the playoffs. Brilliant. But I have to be honest. Its nice to beat Montreal with a bunch of their fans in the building…….Ole my ass!!!!

  127. avatar Big Dog says:

you people are a joke.. we may improve by 20 points but next year we cant make playoffs or continue to rebuild if we dont get top 3 pick.. forget that crap.. we will miss the playoffs but at the most 5 games.. and honestly these guys we have with addition of a d man or 2 anda forward will make the playoffs..
get a grip you hammerheads we WILL make playoffs on 10-11.
truth be told if ricky didnt attempt to come back this year we are in playoffs..yes we owed it to rick to give him a shot..do i think it was handled right..no, but its water under the bridge.
we have young team and guys who want to win.. our top 2 lines continue to improve and our 4th line matches up well with other..chill out fans

  128. avatar Mike from Oceanside says:

GINO @96 – I disagree. Your suggestion hurts the teams that finish last in the league. It dooms them to perpetually remain in the cellar and therefore never to improve because they will be unable to obtain “can’t miss” talent unless they deal up. Any any dealing up will cost them whatever talent they already have or additional picks.

  129. avatar big dally mac says:

We are slowly winning our way to the Ultimate Pergetory Pick. A pick that might only help us a year or two down the road. We could end up becoming the next Columbus Blue Jackets. Never bad enough to get Nash any help but never good enough to make a dent. At best we could end up middling again…sneaking into the playoffs by the skin of our teeth for quick exits yearly. We needed to be bottom five and we just past those Blue Jackets for 8th pick. If we were to now lose them all we’d still only pick 5th. I’m not asking for losses, or blaming them for winning, I’m just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. To be Chicago or even Buffalo for that matter, you need the tools. And they aren’t signing any FA of note next year either. They don’t wanna come, because we don’t have the available firepower ready to go yet.

I went to the game and had a blast, I could care less if they dont get a 1 – 3 pick, it would be great, but I am not going to root against my team. I have a feeling snowy will make some moves this summer come drafting and fa. Lets get it done. Playoffs for sure next year. I believe everyone would have signed up for how we improved from last season.

  131. avatar steve says:

1 game under 500 baby. yes! i like winning. if you wanna lose, go root for tampex bay.

  132. avatar john says:

    tavares-to-neiderreiter, interesting feel!!

  133. avatar Martin the french Canadian says:

When we need to lose, Islanders win. When we need to win, Islanders lose. It sucks and it will suck till the end of time to be an Islanders fan !

  134. avatar Staten Islander says:

Even when they win they lose

  135. avatar Examiner says:

Big dally mac – The Isles put themselves at 7, not 8 with tonights win. And the best possible draft position they could acheive is 4th, not 5th in the lottery.

Still 3 games left for us, FLA and TB. CAR and CLB have 2.

  136. avatar Jim Clark says:

Send that jersey to the back of the closet along with the Fishsticks uniform.

They could have used more Yankee scores. Only one (4-3 for the good guys) was shown.

    OleOleOle. OleOle. OleOleOle. OleOle.

  137. avatar Scott says:

    We won? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

  138. avatar Arthur says:

I went to the game tonight and had a blast.
Only the 4th hockey game I’ve ever been to, all in the past month since the Olympics.
I’m excited about this team, I like the young players, I like the direction, I’ll be back for more next year.

  139. avatar MT says:

It was a fun time, period. Congrats Okie on the award.

  140. You know what sucks? Since he was drafted, I talked so highly of Bergie. I really thought I saw a star in the making, or at least a sold contributor. He’s been a letdown. With the lockout season and most of these past 2. But…he shows flashes of progress, always at the end of the year. I don’t know what to make of that. But with the Isles usually out of the race at this point, I usually miss a few games and never really get to see what this guy can bring.
I’ll catch the replay later, I just don’t have much patience left for riding into next season singing the “Bergie came on real strong at the end of the year song”.

This off season should be by far the most interesting one in a while.

  141. avatar Jzimm says:

The best that we can do right now is finish the season with the 3rd overall pick. For that to happen, we have to lose our remaining games, Carolina and Columbus have to win 1 game each, and Florida OR Tampa Bay have to run the table. If we lose our remaining three, and Florida OR Tampa Bay lose one more, 3rd overall is for all practical purposes out of the picture. We may have to root for a TB or FLA sweep this weekend… or dependin on what happens, it can mean absolutely nothing. Don’t forget, all teams that finish out of the playoffs are considered lottery teams. So at this moment, 1st or 2nd overall is not completely out of the question, but it’s getting close. I do think that a team will win the lottery this year.

  142. avatar islebethere4u says:

Well, I have to agree with one thing that Big Dog says….If not for the ill-fated come back attempt of Ricky D, we just may have made the playoffs. Also imho I would love to finish above the Rags if possible. There are several players who must return next year and several who must not. Sorry Mr. Snow but you must do a better job signing free agents or we again go nowhere in the standings next year.

  143. avatar TomNYC says:

When we want them to win, they lose. When we want them to lose, they win. Next September I’m gonna start rooting for a top draft pick, maybe then we’ll win the cup.

  144. avatar THE PORK CHOP EXPRESS says:

It is amazing how well the isles play at the end of the year. They did the same thing last year however they already dug themselves into a huge whole. the only reason why we did not have that hole this year is roli!!
So goodbye top 2 pick. I will not speak of this again this year. Instead it is time to discuss the future. other then 1 foward position and 1 defensive position we will not have many open positions. so the team that you see tonight will probably be the team that you see in october. so lets pray that they train well this offseason and also TB drafts a goalie with their number 1 pick lol!!!!

  145. avatar transplantedislanderfan says:

people complaining about the late season wins need to calm down. it would be one thing if the wins were the results of play by people like park, jackman, weight, hunter or any veterans that will be gone in the next year or 2. this mini resurgence is being led by our young core. it shows the development of players like blake,ko,jt, bergie, frans, and moulsen. they are learning how to win, how to keep pushing and not quit. it may cost a 2 – 3 spots in the draft but in the long run the benefits to thier development outweigh that. i will agree that because we are dropping out of the lottery, it puts more pressure on snow to supplement our developing core through free agencey this summer. 2 or 3 good moves and continued progression from our young guys could mean a 15 -20 point jump next season and a 5 or 6 playoff seed instead of fighting for 8th.

  146. avatar isles316 says:

I know I am in the minority but I’m glad the Islanders are spoiling everyone’s party. They have inexperience at every position yet they keep finding ways to win. So they get the 6th pick instead of the 3rd.

The real question is will Charles Wang open the wallet for Snow.

  147. avatar isles316 says:

For anyone that said the Islanders played well at the end of last season, let me remind you that the Islanders went 2-9-1 in their last 12.

  148. avatar SavaFan1 says:

Keep winning! A winning season is more important than a draft pick. You don’t root for a draft pick. Win the next 3 games, end the season on a high, and next year the Islanders are playoff bound.

  149. avatar rwisles says:

Hurry back Bruno!! We need you.

  150. avatar scottd says:

Maybe the inability to draft and market the arrival of a top pick will spur the team to be more active in free agency. Maybe.

  151. avatar vrinqueens says:

Please, Please Mr. Wang sell this team to Mikhail Prokhorov (Nets owner) he’s worth over $13 Billion and they could use an NHL team in the Barclay Center when it opens in two years. Wait until July 1st he’s going to go nuts on free agents…
ya know guys like LeBron, Wade, Bosh and Stuoudemire are on his radar.

  152. avatar ars9x says:

Spoil, spoil spoil! Let’s go Islanders, Finish strong!

I don’t understand all these defeatist fans who are continually tell us fans who are happy to win, how nuts we are. I think it’s nuts to imagine ANY coach of ANY team having a “let’s just loose so those of us who are left on this team could possibly benefit from a top 3 pick” pre-game talk. gmab. This is great for the kids, the coaches and their confidence

Think of how much a push like this has done for a player like JT. He looks awesome and he needed this, payoffs or not.

  153. avatar 27Tonelli says:

We Want “El Nino” anyway ! (Streit influenced) . Go Isles!

  154. avatar IslesNation says:

Hey, I’ll take an Islanders win anyday, even if I wasn’t bummed when they were down 3-2 with two minutes left, its nice to see the kids contribute and play good hockey.

I hope that Snow has been watching this team and noticing the contributors on the scoresheet the last 10 games or so. That being said, I really don’t want to hear about the “character, good lockerroom leaders” being signed in the summer. Let’s get some grade A talent to go with the 8 forwards (bergy now included) and 3 dmen (Amac, Hillen and Streit). Like Dougie Weight but his time has passed, same with Sim, Jackman, Hunts and maybe Park if it’s not in a limited 4th line role.

  155. avatar orngfan says:

we gotta be thankful for the little things. we will never see that jersey again. now for the flyers alternates, the whites!! good riddance!!

  156. avatar Walt says:

Nino!! Nino!! Nino!! Nino!! The weather is changing, El Nino is coming.

  157. avatar The New Isles GM says:

Just watched Matt Duchene secure a playoff spot for the Colorado Avalanche as he scored a ridiculous goal on Roberto Luongo in the shootout…..man that kid can move.

  158. avatar steve says:

based on what CB posted yesterday

scorer here – Tavares – Comeau

    Moulson – Bailey – Okposo

    Bergy – Nielsen – Hunter

its not my money, but if you can drop a PROVEN scorer next to JT for 2010-11, thats 3 lines.

you have rollie in goal, you need a pair of big defenders(sutton?) for streit and hillen, and we are pretty good. by adding 2 big body defenders, you have depth on defense.

  159. avatar MJS says:

I would love to see Nino on the Isles. That kid has game changer written all over him, or at least he does from what I saw of his play at the WJC’s. If he’s the Isles pick then no worries at all. Maybe if we all start a letter writing campaign to Garth he’ll get one or two good free agents on board even if he has to over pay them. This team can battle now and as all the kids get older they’re only going to get better. With the right pick ups in the summer the Isles can be a playoff team even if they have to start in 6th, 7th, or 8th place.

  160. avatar Will C. says:

how about duchene scoring the clinching goal to get the avs to the playoffs. he would have been turned into a 4th liner on the isles, his good team has allowed him space to develop binto something special. JT just has the natural gifts.

  161. avatar Strummer's Army says:

    #150 LMAO!

TB is pulling a tank job, no question.

I’d be very happy if Isles finished 3rd overall, they’d have a solid shot at winning the lotto and moving up or at worst finishing 4th. Hall, Seq, Fowler, Gudbranson one of those 4 is who the Isles would benefit the most from.

What a move from Bergy!!! That is what is frustrating about him is we all know he’s very capable of playing like that. I feel he’s at his best when being chippy, dropping the gloves now and then like in Bridge, and playing top speed. Consistency escapes a lot of the Isles but man if he could bring it like that nightly!

    Nielsen, Moulson etc bravo.

If these Isles ever get a real defense and are tough enough watch out!

Won’t it be sad if the Isles are showcasing Biron so he can earn a contract with another team while hurting their own draft position. Rolo has sat a bit play him maybe he’s cold enough to get us a loss.

I want that high pick but I have to admit it’s fun watching the boys compete hard and win.

It was also nice the Montreal fans came and spend their cash on LI and got crushed at the end.

  162. avatar Vic says:

There seems to be a little confusion about the draft lottery. We presently sit in 7th spot from the bottom. The lottery allows a team to move up a maximum 4 spots and in our case that would be the third pick. We can finish 5th from the. Carolina plays Montreal and Boston and they have the same amount of wins as us and Columbus has Detroit twice.
Comeau is definitely a good second line forward. Not third. He could become a good 3rd forward on a top line. He has the ability. He skates well, is physical and can create. People forget that Comeau was the top scoring forward for Canada’s gold medal winning team. Don’t get me wrong, he is not a Tavares or Okposo, but he is player that could compliment a top line.
If we pick around 7th we should not be upset if Garth takes either Connolly, Tarasenko, or Niederreiter. They are also elite level players. I live in Windsor, Ontario and I get to see Hall play all the time. He is special but people say that if Connolly had been playing all year he would be mentioned for the top pick with Hall and Seguin.

  163. No one outside of the bottom (or top) five can move in the lottery. A 7th pick is a 7th pick. That’s why last two year’s ping pong celebration on Versus only includes 5 GMs.

  164. avatar Anthony Yampol says:

This has been a GREAT second year of the rebuild. I say eff the bottom 5, and win these last games!

  165. avatar Anthony Yampol says:

Some people here don’t seem to know the rules on the draft. If we finish 7th to last, we CAN move to the 3rd pick. If we end up 5th, we CAN get the 1st pick. But who freaking cares? If our team isn’t a bottom 5 team, then we don’t NEED the 1st overall pick anyway.

  166. avatar Tyler says:

These wins prove nothing except what we can win when we have zero pressure?? These wins will put us back on our re-building process bc at best we draft a guy who most likely wont join the team for another 2-3 yrs? Its unbelievable how we manage to do this to ourselves constantly. Now we get the come from behind wins? Where was this weeks ago?? Id say it’s too little too late (or really too much too late!!) So there you have it, we end the season a couple of points out of a playoff spot with a mediocre draft pick. I know its hard to hate on a team that starts winning but truth is once you don’t make the playoffs your best chance of improvement, especially for a team like the Isles who don’t draw in big-time free agents, is the draft. Its just too bad that we blew all those mid-to late season wins. Maybe we could have actually made the playoffs had a 3rd goalie not come in and completely throw things off. I can only hope that this is not us just winning pressure free hockey but that its hard-working skilled and experience play that can carry over to next season…I just don’t wanna look back at these lat 2 weeks and say, damn that’s where we blew drafting the next big thing.

  167. avatar Vic says:

The draft lottery show only features the bottom 5 GM’s because they are the only teams that can move into the 1st spot. Every team that does not make the playoffs has a chance to win the lottery but can only move up 4 spots (ie. Calgary has a 0.5% chance of winning and moving to the tenth spot) maximum. You can find this information at mynhldraft.com/NHL-Draft-Lottery. The Islanders presently hold a 18.8% chance of winning the lottery and moving up to the 3rd overall pick.

  168. avatar Vic says:

Sorry, the Isles have a 4.7% chance of winning the lottery and moving into the 3rd selection overall.

  169. avatar nyrangersuck says:

Just win baby. I wonder what Al Arbour thinks of all the tanking rubbish going around this site?

  170. avatar local25rooster says:

    they play Sunday too no?

  171. avatar izzo says:

Laughing so hard at the fans freaking out over the team winning. Gee, they’re playing good hockey for once and you’re complaining? This is Islander country.

  172. avatar paulyp says:

I hope you glass half full guys are loving these wins after we are out of a playoff spot. They are as good as preseason wins hockey in china w the same team next year, I would have to say this is the most frustrating team in sports with out question and im cursed to follow them blindly for the rest of my life

  173. avatar Ethan K says:

If we’re not going to lose any games now in order to move up in the lottery, then I don’t expect any losses next season!

I totally wouldn’t mind Nino Neiderreiter. We’ve already got one great Swiss player, let’s add us another one!

  174. avatar ny711ot says:

171..Difference is if arbour was coaching they would be in the playoffs. Regrettably in my eyes, there is nothing this team can do right. I have little doubt that we will look back on this draft position and moan about ‘the one that got away’. Bergenheim really ticks me off. His whole career, he shows flashes of offensive brilliance in april when it never means a thing . At least ko is on board with the lottery push…he’s looked terrible.

  175. avatar Irish Isle says:

All you people who are enjoying these “moral” victories better not complain when the Isles dont get that primo pick, or then when Garth fails to trade up.

  176. avatar Irish Isle says:

And every victory now is one more reason Wang does not need to spend money to improve the club.

  177. avatar Schnip says:

    #172 local25
The isles will be wearing their retro light blues Sunday, those will be full time next year

  178. avatar Frank nyc says:

Im not gonna pretend to be an nhl scout, but if the Isles are not drafting top 3 but are drafting top 10 then they must go brett connolly. This kid is a LW which we need for our first line, He is a big kid at 6’2 with room to grow and he can score.
Think about it. A team only needs 6-7 Dmen to fill out the roster. You need 12 forwards. Plus the fact that almost all of our good prospects are Dmen. I understand You try to go best player available what this year i believe sizee has to be considered.

  179. avatar Spartiarti RVC says:

i do get a bit frustrated by bergie getting going at end of year but to his defense he plays hard every night, it doesnt help to extract his talent when Gordo was putting him on 3rd and 4th line duties.

Comeau scoring 25, and bergie putting in 20 next year will be like having a top draft pick. I think Comeau finally gets it.

I think trent hunter needs Freddie Meyer diet this summer, He is getting slower with age, he could use dropping 15lbs.

  180. avatar Ricky T says:

Love to see them play well, but frustrated that they blew their high draft position. Unless Snow/Wang change their model on how this team is being built, there is not enough high end talent one their roster to make this team a cup contender in the next few years. We could get lucky in the draft, and I think Connolly is the way to go since he is a high end talent if healthy, but without a top 3 pick, luck is operative word. Maybe Kabanov has slipped so badly with his return to Russia that he could be a second round pick. I think plenty of GM’s are concerned about the KHL factor with him now as was the case with Petrov when the Isle’s drafted him. See, we can still have hope about how we draft!

  181. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Yes I’d like a top 3 pick, but I’d actually like to see the team finish with a winning record as well.

  182. avatar Lav says:

Great fight to win the game last night. I’d rather see an effort like that, than watch them mail it in. Hopefully this gives us something to build on for next year. I think a winning attitude going into next season is more important than trying to tank it and get a better draft pick.

  183. avatar Justin says:

All those wankers cryin’ about the draft..take a break huh. This team hasn’t quit, don’t you get. It’s called heart. We need some size, if anything. Let’s hope Wang shoots the lock off the wallet, and adds some quality bangers…Go Islanders!!!!!!

  184. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

Cannot believe this season is ending like this. Unless JT wins rookie of the year and moulson comes back and scores 25 goals next year this season is a wash. Cant believe we are going to get stuck with a pick outside of the top five. We are going from having an NHL ready forward or defensman to drafting someone who is going to need years of seasoning in the AHL and then potentially not even be a star. Joke.

  185. avatar mrlbem says:

Hope the extra point doesn’t burn us. Gordon should have used Jackman, Gillies and Flood in the shootout. LOL. Seriously, after looking terrible in shootouts all year, now Biron stops ‘em all? And when did Dylan Reese morph into Paul Coffey? Geez!!!

  186. avatar Isles81 says:

Just watch how all these guys that are “surging” now revert right back to zero’s next year as soon as the games mean something. Meaningless wins now are just counterproductive.

  187. avatar bossy22 says:

If we are not drafting 1 or 2, nothing after that is a sure thing. May as well keep winning. We will land a solid prospect between 5 and 8…no worries. This team is really looking good as of late, really excited about the future

  188. avatar RD says:

Hey CB, any idea what the home jerseys are going to look like? I figured they would look like the jerseys they have now but in white, but you wrote that they were “working” on a home jersey. Any news or hints for us?

As for the draft, we will find a very good player anywhere in the top 10. Right now we sit at 7. Don’t see us winning any of these last 3 games because we are caught in the middle of a fight between Pitt and NJ for the division. Maybe we can fall into a top 5 spot. TB and FLA have a home and home so someone will get pts.

  189. good riddance! So glad to know we wont be wearing those horrible jerseys ever again.

  190. avatar Examiner says:

Perhaps we’re not currently in the lottery because we dont belong there. I would love a top pick but I do not believe that we are in the same category as EDM, TOR, FLA, and TB. You are what you are and right now this team is more a fringe playoff team than a bottom-feeder.

Those people saying this season would be a loss without a top pick are just bitter. Besides, they still have the chance to finish in the lottery, win it, and move up up to 4 spots.
