ISLANDERS OFF TO QUEBEC CITY
Oct. 2 preseason game: NYI vs. Montreal
To be certain, the Islanders facing the Canadiens at Le Colisee in Quebec City on Oct. 2 is not the prelude to a move there. This is just a big preseason payday for a franchise losing millions of dollars every year while developers and politicians fiddle. Get your tickets here.
Love Quebec City. Worked at the draft there about a hundred years ago. Had too much to drink after. Wasn’t quite sure in which direction the Chateau Frontenac was. Ran into two scouts I recognized from other teams. They invited me to join them for additional drinks, a round of pool and some food. Fell in love for the second time – with Poutine. Relax, Catherine. It’s french fries with cubed mozzarella and brown gravy on top.
Islanders camp itinerary: Beijing, Saskatoon, Long Island, Quebec City. Sounds more like a Dave Mathews Band tour.

When you kill the fanbase by making poor hiring choices for over ten years like the owner has…it’s no surprise isles make more money on the road. Maybe they can play no home games n keep the money other teams make off the extra home games. If Yankees hired the lowest qualified gm they could find instead of gene Micheal 15 years ago they would be the mets right now. Nothings for free in life.
-
you make a monster mistake by calling the cheese mozzarella my man CB! They are cheese “curds”. Big Difference my man! If you are ever in Ottawa just make sure you hit up the Elgin Street Diner! Having a wife from Ottawa sure does have its benefits! That and a good old fashined Harvey’s Burger!
-
it’s funny how the islanders are running all around the world when they should be home on long island getting ready for the season like the other 29 nhl teams.
but hey….that is the islanders for ya.
-
One thing I’ve noticed with NFL & NBA teams is usually the ones that take these crazy oversea’s trips end up with injuries and fatigue. Thankfully I think LA and whoever else did it last year show there is a way to do it. Be nice when they get the new arena in Queens or Brooklynn.
-
Haha, good stuff.
-
No better drunk food than poutine in Quebec!
-
Was there 6 years ago. One of the most Beautiful cities around. Its like going to Paris within driving distance (9 hours). The old walled city is just spectacular! I could never understand why there isnt a franchise there anymore(please not the Isles either!)
-
I think the game is already sold out! They said they are no longer offering tickets on the sight
-
…more like an Iron Maiden tour.
-
I get Poutine at the Golden Reef, but they don’t call it that.
-
Having worked in Quebec City, and all over Europe – I can tell you that Quebec City is the closest thing to a European city you’ll find on this continent.. It’s spectacular and anyone going is in for a great trip..
Can’t blame the Isles for wanting to make a buck..
-
Stayed at the Chateau Frontenac as well when Canadian money was like monopoly money. Great time. Thank God for the hiils in the city, or I’d still have that Poutine in my system. BTW, I wore a Nordique cap as I walked around, no less than 10 locals got teary eyed because they missed their franchise.
-
I’m sure there is something complainable here for Isles fans. But this is awesome. I’d love to go to Quebec City and I too love poutine.
-
Long Island cheese fries are better. Screw the gravy on the top!
Cool little story CB. Nothing wrong with the Isles heading up there for a game. I just wish they would hold camp on Long Island in the near future so the fans who see the team all year can also take in the preseason too.
-
The old city of Quebec is beautiful.. They also make the best croissants there..
-
So there must be some truth to this guy from Quebec trying to purchase the Islanders..Somebody at the Town of Hempstead had better get up off there A$$es or we are going to lose our team.
-
China is on the other side of the earth litterally, Qubec is beautiful, but really, why can’t we have a normal camp like most teams and not travel all over the world. I hope it doesn’t effect the team early season next year. Maybe they can sell Islander Pre season tour T-shirts like concert shirts at games mmmmm.
-
I also love QC; went there a few times before Nordiques left. Too bad game is sold out already; I would love to have gone. Frankly,my biggest Quebecois food temptations are tourtiere and soupe aux pois jaunes.
-
Maybe someone can clarify this for me. After watching the Islanders some 30 plus years. What is wrong with Long Island? Why not hold camp here? Is it that irrational to think that the home town fans might want to see their team prior to opening night? Heck I can even see them holding camp in Bridgeport which is only a $10 dollar boat ride away.
Anyone? CB? I mean for an organization that prides itself on being fan friendly I see the next major step as trainning camp on the moon.
-
Great strategy … financially … I like it.
Drag all those Habs fans to an away game in their own territory … and Isles reap the finaicial reward.
I love QC too!! Played in a holiday tournament there back in 1990 … awesome city with lots of history.
I just hope the Isles ownership likes it too much and make it their permanent home.
BTW … The Isles negotiating to play a home exhibition game there is probably what sparked those rumours.
-
Now you’ve done it, I’m hungry
-
Correction to above:
“I just hope the Isles ownership likes it too much and make it their permanent home.” … Should read…
I just hope the Isles ownership DOESN’T like it too much and make it their permanent home.
-
I wish that these kind of announcements would not almost always elicit speculation about the teams future. Mr. Wang please negotiate with the TOH [ if thats possible] Please lets get resolution.
-
Heh heh. Brilliant gamesmanship on Charles’ part. Unlike the KC exhibition game last year, this one will sell out and lead to speculation about a sale and a move. Any rumours arising from this will have to be taken much more seriously.
-
Who’s going to cash on this game ? I thought it was the habs. Altough I’ve been a die hard Isles fan forever, I can’t make it to long island each week end so I do have season tickets at the Bell Centre. And the canadiens sent an email trying to sell this game.
Maybe they’ll split half and half with the Isles.
Quebec City sure is extremely beautiful.
It’s a huge shame that Sunrise in Florida has an NHL team, and not Quebec. Totally stupid.
Kevin Poulin in net for this one. He just shone at the colisee. His junior team just swept the Remparts and he was “the” star. The Remparts, they play at the colisee and they’re owned and coached by Patrick Roy.
-
You can’t blame Wang for wanting to have preseason games in other cities to make some money. If we had these games on the Island, how many fans would actually show up for a September hockey game. The old barn wouldn’t even be half full. I actually think its good leverage on Wang’s part that there is relocation speculation. Maybe something will finally get done here on the Island or Queens/Brooklyn. If I remember correctly, didn’t it take Mario Lemieuxs’ visit to KC to get his new arena. Just my 2 cents.
-
I want to see the Islanders play a preseason game in Bridgeport again.
-
Hopefully not a prelude to the isles relocating to QC. On that note, i just saw Kate Murray @ our town Little League opening day, and when asked about the LH project/NVMC reno, she gave me that fake politicians smile and told me things were moving along. I hope she didn’t mean my team!
-
How can you compare Quebec City with the oasis that kate murray’s uniondale is? Like the parking lot. The pizza place. The uh… parking lot.
That’s gonna be a lot of traveling for them. But it won’t kill them… so they sit on a plane for a while. Not exactly like climbing a mountain. They’ll be fine. Make some news. Bond. Maybe get some fans in other cities to follow and come visit the historic parking lot of long island.
-
LOL at your Poutine/Wife joke. hahahahaha
Quebec City is awesome. I’ve been a couple of times.
-
If Wang moves the team, better Quebec City than Brooklyn or Queens.
-
LOVEEE Poutine. In Montreal they serve poutine in Burger King.
Cherry Valley in Whitestone serves poutine but its called a “Couch Potato” Good Stuff. -
I like the idea of the preseason game in Quebec City, should get Wang and the Isles some nice financial return
-
Preseason is a joke. We will be one of the few teams entering the season exhausted and with jet lag because we can’t keep it simple.
-
Oh my this could be so much fun. My favoUrite two teams (Isles rank 1st) on my birthday weekend. Can stretch out my newly obtained Canadian Citizenship taboot!
CB, I think you were referring to this, but as you know a Poutine is a fries with cheese (curds) and gravy all mixed together for a lovely mess. But putain is French for whore. Good thing you clarified for Catherine
Let me know if you think you are going to attend this event. I’d love to hook up with you there.
-
poutine rules
-
Im an original NYI fan from 1972 who has lived his life in New Jersey. If the Islanders were to move to Queens I (for one) would NOT be very upset. On the contrary, I would be pleased. It’s a lot easier for me to head to Queens. BUT, as a true NYI fan must say the team belongs on the Long Island. Go Isles 2010-11
-
Lets hope they schedule a preseason game at the new Barclay Center in Brooklyn when it opens up in two years. That will be too close for comfort for the L.I. politicians and reset assured something will happen either the Lighthouse gets built or the team announces they’re moving to Brooklyn.
-
#32 I’ve been going to Cherry Valley forever, It’s awesome and open 24/7.
Philly Cheese steak and cheese fries at 3 in the morning, can’t beat it. LOL!!! -
FrankNYC(#32) Cherry Valley’s potato couch is the greatest drunk food on the planet. Was waiting for someone to mention Cherry Valley in this thread!
BTW, the one in Hempstead does not even come close to the one in Whitestone. The Whitestone one is the best place on earth.
-
You guys are making me hungry—for food& hockey!!!
-
I don’t see how all the travel can hurt them, since most of the guaranteed starters only play a couple of pre-season games anyway.
-
Why do we always have to be doing something ridiculous? ITS ALWAYS SOMETHING with this team. Fine, go play a game in Quebec City. But is BEI -FREAKING- JING and THEN Saskatoon necessary? It’s just enough already, just why cant we have a normal training camp, a few local exhibition games and then start our season?
-
Games not sold out, just need to make an account. I just bought 7 tickets, the game is on my birthday I can’t wait!
-
I was turned on to Poutine this summer….the best!
-
I’m okay with this. Why not let Wang make money while he sells more tickets elsewhere? We have from October to April to play in front of a half empty arena.
-
Ahh Quebec City, home of some of the most beautiful women in the world! Good choice!
-
Hey Wang here’s an idea, have training camp at Iceworks. Have some public appearance with the team. Build up the local goodwill and some hype going into the season instead of doing all this gimmicky crap.
-
why cant we have some of this poutine goodness at the coliseum?…instead of the cr*p they sell now…
-
“Fell in love for the second time – with Poutine. Relax, Catherine. It’s french fries with cubed mozzarella and brown gravy on top.”
lol
what else could it be?
-
Cherry Valley is the type of place that you can’t go before 2-3am, and you must be somewhat intoxicated.
As for the trip to QC, it’s not so bad. It’s the China trip that worries me.
-
Love the Dave Matthews Band reference CB. After 40 something shows in about 10 states, I know what you mean.
GO Isles!!
-
# 10 – the Golden Reef? In Rockville Centre? HAHAHA that place is not appetizing. I’ll get a tuna sandwich and fries, thats about it.
-
# 48- It can have a different reference if you think about it a little
-
I too fell in love with Poutine last year. I work in NASCAR for ESPN and fell in love with it while working at the track. While there I snuck away at night to a lil’ local barn to see a pre-season Quebec Junior League game. Junior Montreal!!!!

Ahhh, poutine and smoked meat – Quebec’s two great contributions to the culinary world.
