FanHouse Mock 2010 NHL Draft

Last year with HV71 of the Swedish Elite League, the 6-3, 200-pound Ullstrom was 5-11-16 in 47 games. He was the Islanders’ fourth round pick in the 2008 draft.

Ullstrom, who signed a three-year Entry Level deal, told Point Blank last summer that he was determined to begin his North American playing career in 2010. Most scouts project him as a third-line forward, with an outside chance of developing into a second-liner.

  1. Exciting I think. I only know what I’ve read on here. Hoping someone surprises us all and totally exceeds expectations.

nice to see some young player with size and determination to make NHL.

Lets hope he can be a 2nd round talent. He will need some time in AHL.

Lets get Petrov here this year.

  3. avatar bluechip says:

Soon the circle will be complete…

  4. avatar potvinrocks says:

16 points in 47 games is not second line material.

  5. avatar Jersey Steve says:

He has good size….hope he uses it.

  6. avatar IslesInPA says:

hard to judge off of the numbers. he’s very young for the SEL, and those are productive numbers for his age.

that being said, Weinhandl tore up the SEL. We all know how that worked out.

Let him develop into what his potential is.

  7. avatar RAMen says:

More good news. This draft class has a chance to change the face of our team for years. This season will be the key litmus test for several of these players as the graduate up to the AHL & NHL.

  8. avatar Chris R says:

It’s time to sign Moulson and Petrov. July 1st is going to be a date to remember.

  9. avatar nobody says:

There is nothing wrong with a fourth round pic becoming a 3ed rd forward…in fact, that would be outstanding!

  10. avatar Angelos says:

Bridgeport’s 2010-11 season keeps getting more interesting.

  11. avatar Kaszycki's Krew says:

Yay ! I have had enough of Pronger and Big Buff already! Time to allow me to over-analyze and obsess on the Isles inking a 4th rd. pick !! Fantastic ! :)

I just can’t wait for the season to be over – so I can get back to Isles being back in the news again. Get him to Dr. Capuano and let him work some magic here. You just never know -do you?

    GO ISLES

    CB:

Is Ullstrom a Joensuu-clone? I don’t know much about him. We have so many 3rd line wingers, it’s time to grab ourselves a top line winger in the draft to play alongside JT.

  13. avatar 2Bit says:

I picked Ullstrom in the 2008 mock draft I was involved with, so of course I’m rooting for his success. This is good news!

  14. avatar Metalcoconut says:

Well at least the Isles news of late has been encouraging. Perhaps the farm team will start to feel more like a farm team rather than a high school gym class.

  15. avatar Strummer's Army says:

#4 don’t let the Swe numbers fool you, if you look back in history all their players have low scoring totals there until they come over, it is the nature of that league. He had 4 points in 6 games at WJC.

Glad he is in the fold. Isles are slowly getting bigger and better.

Petrov is next but so far a good summer, Poulin, Hamonic, Rhas, De Haan, Ullstrom etc.

Fanhouse Mock has Gudbranson (the most ideal player for the Isles to choose…Connolly next)going to the Isles. Could be a great summer if Snow lets the garbage walk, has a strong draft and some key FA signings and trades.

Botta, you mentioned Isles might be able to work a deal with Chi for cap relief, I would imagine Boston and a few others would be in the same boat correct?

  16. avatar Billy-no-not-Jaffe says:

Terrific. Ullstrom is a big kid who has good speed and goes to the net. Even if he projects to a 3rd line forward in the NHL. you are always looking to upgrade the quality across the board at every position.

  17. avatar SCLI says:

Not exactly an earth shattering signing but at least its not bad news. Now bring on the Draft!

  18. avatar Bryan says:

Get him to the Bridge… who’s next?

  19. avatar vukotaismyhero12 says:

From what I have heard about this kid is that he has alot of skill as a third liner….think darell powe with philly.

  20. avatar Ricky T says:

For those of us who saw him at prospect camp last year, he was one of the best, if not the best player on the ice. He has a lot more speed than Joensuu and some nifty moves. Not saying that he’s a first line player, but because of his size and speed, he can develope into an NHL regular. Remember that he was a 19 year old playing against men in a top league, so the point total is actually pretty good.

  21. avatar SuperFry TNT says:

Ah yes, Third Liners. The cornerstone of any successful, competitive franchise.

I think we may just have that role covered. Of course, if your development strategy is to throw everything possible at the wall and see what sticks, why the hell not.

  22. avatar (Sim)ple says:

So 2008 is looking like a stronger draft with each passing day. Makes me even more excited about the possibilities from 2009 and whatever is to come later this month.

  23. avatar Maydog says:

I can’t wait for the day when signings like this one stop being considered ‘big news.’

  24. avatar caley says:

What about Spurgeon? Are the Isles re-signing him? Or will he go back into the draft?

  25. avatar Chris R says:

Spurgeon is going to college probably to develop his skills. He might end up in the ECHL.

  26. avatar Irish Isle says:

Liked what I saw about Ullstrom in the Prospects Camp, he stood out on the ice more than anyone other player.

Lets see what he can do in NA. He brings two things the Isles need: size & speed.

  27. avatar 4theisles says:

size counts – you just need to look at the hawks and flyers and see the big guys play. Montreal failed in part because in spite of talent, they lacked size.

  28. avatar Pete says:

Can’t remember the last Swede the Isles drafted that worked out well? Tommy Salo??

As for the Mock Draft, decent stuff…but I just can’t see any team taking Gormely over Gudbranson. It’d be great if that happened..

  29. avatar Well be back says:

cant wait for next season. this young team has so much potential to be something deadly in the future

  30. avatar SneakyPete77 says:

Awesome news! Those are prety good numbers for a kid playing in a league full of men. His size and skill are something to get excited about. Maybe Capuano can team Ullstrom up with Joensuu. Throw a speedy center like Schremp in between them and you got something. In year or two, hopefull they will playing on the island and making life miserable for opposing goalies.

Now, Garth needs to pry Petrov from the KHL and Ness from Univ. of Minnesota to sign 3 year entry level deals.

  31. avatar Ryan T says:

Although his numbers aren’t terrific on paper, he was a top 10 scorer early on in the season. After that he wasn’t getting much ice time. As some others in comments have said before, those are respectable numbers for a young prospect in the SEL.

  32. avatar Staten Islander says:

bring him into camp, see what he’s got and then send him to the bridge. Like his size though

  33. avatar mark p says:

16 points in 47 games…..thats is indeed second line material on most Islander teams. Richard Park lasted here a while with similar stats. Euros are usually good skaters so 6-3 has a chance.

  34. avatar boss15 says:

SEL is really competitive so even though his numbers aren’t all that exciting he could be a nice surprise. Def like the idea of him and Joensuu on a line together, they would need a really good playmaking center though. In any case, should be an exciting fall in Bport!

  35. avatar big dally mac says:

Very nice…fill the Bridge with prospects i say.

  36. avatar steve says:

SEL no sense repeating. the guy is 6’3″, 200 lbs and can skate. even if he plays third or fourth line minutes, hes 6’3″ 200 lbs and can skate. if he plays a bit physical, he has size and weight. or do we have too many guys measuring up this big? cause i havent seen them.
