FANHOUSE TV: CAM FOWLER
Puck-moving dman likely won’t get past CBJ at 4
After my mock 3-5 was posted on FanHouse, calls, texts and emails came in backing my assertion that Cam Fowler is destined for Columbus. Of course, Florida holds the cards at 3. More on that subject later today. Here’s the interview I shot for FH TV with Cam (and a guest fly) at the Cup Final. He was pumped to meet Don Cherry. Comments.

I really hope Florida takes Connelly, and leaves us with either Fowler or Gudbranson.
I know we need more offense, but we also could use a big, strong guy like Gudbranson.
Both Philly and Chicago had big, tough players. We need more size. While size doesn’t always directly produce goals, it sets a tough, positive tone. Indirectly, more size will help us score.
-
And, with the Islanders luck, I don’t want to go anywhere near a potential injury!
-
I missed the original link in your post (reading comprehension issues apparently). Thanks for keeping us informed as draft day approaches. Very different than the drafts pre-2009 when we were largely in the dark unless one had the patience to research all over the web. I hope this site continues as long as you have the desire.

looks a little nervous haha, solid prospect
-
i’m a fan of size too…but he seems he’d be deadly. i also feel like if he fell to the islanders, we’d be trading him ins ome strange way. with Connolly’s medical information being somewhat kept “close to vest”…i’m no longer comfortable with that. it gives me a bad feeling no matter what, even if it’s only because they know he’s already going at #3.
-
Again….. Whomever SnowJanks targetss….do what ever it takes to get him!! Move up, trade down,do a dance, doesn’t matter…..
Based on what I know… I target Gubrandsen… Ialso look to deal with Florida to make sure it happens….that’s if Wanger wass paying my behind to GM
Now.. If we look at the whole picture, cap room/extra $$$ from concerts/etc anbd couple that with all our cap room I would keep #5, do what I have to do to get #3 or just tradet move upand throw money atsome UFA’s
-
Connolly has gone from a red flag to HUGE red flag now that the agent is holding back medical info. Gudbranson please, although I wouldn’t be upset with Fowler either.
-
With all the recent talk on Connolly and his medical background, hopefully Florida has a handshake deal with him to take him at 3 because as we close in on the draft, Gudbranson would be an instant hit on the Island and would allow us to look at other options come free agency. If both Fowler and Gudbranson are drafted 3 and 4, respectively, I wouldnt be opposed to trading back to #7 and maybe take a Neiderreiter, Gormley or Johannsen. Either way, Florida’s pick will determine what direction we are headed. 8 days away and I can’t wait.

Everyone seems to feel we need more offense. The Isles scored 222 goals last year, same as the Devils, more than Boston and a number of other teams that made the playoffs. What hurt us was defense. We gave up 264 Goals, the 3rd worst in the league. We need a few big shutdown defensemen and some toughness. Start with Gubranson.
-
We definately need help on defense. The young forwards will improve over the last few years. What we need is shut down, tough d-men who will clear the front of the net and make the opposition be affraid to go there. Gervais, FMIV Hillen, AMac, and even Steit do not scare people. All the free agent money should be spend on the Defense. If Fowler and Grabranson are there we should take one of them. More offense can be created by a better defense. The forwards have a lot of potential, the defense is hurting..

how does gudbranson compare to hedman?
-
At this point,if Garth wants either Fowler or Gudbranson, he NEEDS to get the 3rd pick from Florida. This was a 5 man show and it just got narrowed to 4.
Florida is the wildcard and if they pick Gudbranson, we are screwed.
NOT my first choice, but at that point, I’m fine with el Nino and moving back up for one of the American Dmen (Tinordi is my choice).
-
Can we draft a GM?
-
Since it seems like Fowler will be gone by #5, we’re either looking at Connolly (pass), Gormley (pass), Gudbranson (if he’s not taken 4th) or El Nino. My pick would be Gudbranson or El Nino depending on who’s left.
-
This is going to be a wild ride up to ther draft. I still think we should not risk taking Connolly. I would settle for Gormley at 5 assuming Fowler and Gudbranson are gone. Again maybe trade down to get Nino, but I really hope we take a D-man.
-
.. Anyone still ‘happy’ about that MEANINGLESS late game goal against the Pens in the last game of the year? I almost threw my remote at the T.V.
.. The Isles need scoring, they need speed, they need size, but they REALLY REALLY REALLY need to inject more pure talent onto the roster and organization!!
.. Draft the best player available, (Foward or Dman) however Gudbranson would look nice in a Isles uniform. Big, Rangy can move the puck and has a bit of a mean streak with leadership qualities, ill take it!!
.. But no cute “drafting games”, no looongshot drafting, simply draft the player with the most skill and steadiness!! Lets go Isles!!

A few thoughts:
I don’t know what it would take to move up from 3 to 5. Probably would be a bit pricey. Is Gormley really a reach at 5? Ditto for Nino? With Gudbranson and Fowler both off the board at 5 would Isles Nation freak is Nino or Gormley were taken at #5? -
I wouldn’t be shocked if we traded down and took nino or even ryan johansen. but those are the only two i’d settle for if we traded down. keep in mind we have the second most picks in the draft so we can add to that or even put something together. If Gudbranson is gone at 3 and fowler at 4 we pass on connolly.
-
I think Garth is gonna trade down. Especially if the Jackets and Panthers both pass on Connolly.
It a good thing we got all those extra points down the stretch last year.
-
Could we trade our 1st and the SJ 2nd for two firsts, hoping to get someone like Nino and Tinordi? Does that sound reasonable?
-
I’d love if the Isles have the chance to pick Gudbranson. The Isles already had a player named Connolly and it really didn’t work out too well.
-
Everyone of these kids seem like a class act!! With 10 picks in the draft, I think we will see some draft day fireworks from garth! A lot of talent from 5 thru 10! A trade down would not shock me!! Fla. and Columbus are the wild cards in this draft! They may listen to offers for their picks!!
-
If Connelly did not have hip issues, he would give Hall and Seguin a run for their money at 1 & 2. He is that talented. If all meds are disclosed and they are good, he is a steal at 5. However, if that happens, there is no way he is there at 5, So it looks like Gudbranson or Fowler will be an Islander. if that is the case I am happy except that we need some talented scorers with a later pick or via free agency. Also, I was lucky enough to see Nino play. Wow, he was exciting! Just pleeease do not let him fall to the rags!
-
Tinordi has committed to Notre Dame in 2010. I’m not interested in waiting 4 years for this pick. Besides, look what the College route has done for Ness.
-
That overtime loss against Pittsburgh in the final game of the season will cost us Fowler and Gudbranson. They will have Connelly sitting there at 5 and they have to decide if the risk is worth it or do they pass and take Gormley or Neiderrietter. Go with the offensive player, Connelly or Neiderrietter.
-
we’ll be looking at connolly or gormley come 5th pick. i’d gamble on connolly, but wouldn’t blame garth if he traded down.
-
It’s really starting to look like Gudbranson will be there for the isles at 5…unless Connolly is that much of a red flag but I think FLA won’t be able to pass up his talent. Please let Gudbranson still be there
-
Wow, its stunning to see so many above want Gudbranson. He is coming off an injury, has not scored in the minors, and could not make the top PP unit for his junior team. OK, he hits good, but is that what you look for with the 5th pick? Islanders have always been able to get quality D through the FA market. Take a look at Y!’s UFA ranking, of the top 20 projected UFAs, only 8 are forwards. And most UFA scoring forwards do not want to sign with small market/revenue teams like the Isles, unless they are 37 years old. Scoring is tough to come by, ESPECIALLY for the Islanders.
For those who insist on best player available, take a look at draft results 1999-2005, and the players chosen 3-10- some are great, some are decent, and some (more than you think) are not in the NHL. Point is, its a crapshoot, and if it is such, might as well go for something you have tremendous difficulty getting via the FA markets. If you insist on size, why not Nino?
-
I agree with #30 — so many people seem wowed by Gudbranson but take a look at his numbers; certainly now mind-blowing.
I guess he has a great set of intangibles that the scouts see, and it would be terrific to have a heavy hitter on our blueline for years to come. I’d be happy with the selection, but I’m starting to wonder why so many folks on this site feel for certain that he’s the best pick, and not, say, Gormley. Gormley has good numbers and many scouts peg him to have a solid, steady NHL career. He might be the most vanilla pick, but could be the safest and provide the best return.
I’m not saying I hope it’s Gormley, just providing some food for thought…
Oh, I do hope it’s not Connelly. Too many red flags to waste on such a high pick. Hit the free agent wires if we need more scoring help on the wings. -
I don’t care for Gormley. I watched him play 4 games this yr & he never threw a hit. Fowler can play physical sometimes & is an incredible offensive DMan, but Gormley is totally soft! Gormley intercepted a bunch of passes(which showed his high D’ IQ) but he didn’t break up any 2 on 1′s & he did allow opposing forwards to have the crease area to themselves. Gormley would be nice at #7 or #8 but not #5. I’d take Fowler, than Gudbranson, then Nino. Whoever is left.

Love all the interviews you’ve done with the top prospects CB and they all seem like stand up guys. Connolly is really a wild card in this draft and it’ll be interesting to see who takes the risk and what spot he ultimately gets drafted.
Any indication who Florida is thinking about selecting and which teams are looking to move up in the draft?
