Windsor dman on draft potential with the NYI
CB at FanHouse: $14 mill a year for Kovalchuk? Not yet
Should the Islanders draft at No. 5, either Cam Fowler, Brett Connolly or Erik Gudbranson will be there for the taking (if the team wants them). Here’s one of two interviews I recorded with Fowler. This one is for Point Blank readers on Fowler’s views on meeting with the Islanders.

Nice Chris! Been waiting for this type of stuff! Ready for more!
THANKS & GOD BLESS!
-
this draft only gets complicated if one of the 4 picks Gormley …..Who do you choose if its Gumbranson and Connely still on the board? Fowler and Connoly? Folwer and Gumbranson?
-
He seems like a good kid and i would be happy if the Isles drafted him but it would be a bad sign if he stepped right in and made the team next season.
-
I still feel we should take Gormley at 5 over Connolly. We really need to take a defensemen. Man, I wish we had 4 right now and not 5.
-
Great stuff, CB! I love it. I’d definitely be happy if Fowler ended up in an Isles jersey in a couple of weeks.
-
Gudbranson, Connolly or trade back. Fowler reminds me a lot of Calvin DeHaan, the Isles’ second #1 pick last yr. The Isles need a physical Dman or a top winger, not a slight power play point man.
-
Defence…Defence…Defence…
-
No to Fowler. Yes to Gudbrandson, Gormley or Connolly. Yes, to Johansen or Neidereitter. Yes, to Kabanov or McIlrath later in the 1st (if we can get another pick).
-
No one has any reason to say no to Fowler or any of these guys….no one knows how these guys will turn out….Gudbranson can turn into a Brad Ference..just as an example…if we take one of Fowler Gormely Gudbranson or Connolly we will be fine…With the isles luck though i would stay away from Connolly
-
good interview- this team desperatley needs to add grit-whether through draft or free agency
-
The Isles should only draft Brett Connolly if DP needs someone to rehab hips with.
If Snow wants to draft a winger, I rather him draft Nino Niederreitter, he good size and high end offensive skills.
-
When asked if he knew anything about the Isles, the one player he names is….Garth Snow. Bad answer. Do you remember a guy from juniors by the name of John Tavares. Josh Bailey ring a bell. How about the guy you just played against…..Travis Hamonic. Any of those would of been the right answer. Strike one.
-
LOL- Bossy22, maybe he just thought it might be a good idea to kiss a little bit of GM butt?
-
I want them to take Gudbranson, but if they decide to go offense, then Connolly. Pass on Fowler, definitely have to aggree with John #8, he does remind me a lot of De Haan. We need a big boy or another highly skilled forward.
-
Hey Bossy22 at #12 above … What part of young defensemen coming up and good group of core guys did you not hear? The wax build up in your ears is probably from you yelling so much that last game for them to win.
-
Nice two shot there CB!
Well .. as I’ve said before … the two teams ahead of the Isles are going to make the pick for Garth.
Honestly … I’ve only seen highlights, write ups and a few interviews with the top 5 concensus picks.
After Hall and Seguin most have Gundbranson, Fowler and Connolly as tier 1b … and Nino, Gormley and a few others as tier 2 players.
I’m in favor of Garth selecting any one of the three tier 1b players … Gundbranson being my preference because of the punishing size factor tied with skill.
Fowler is a quality pick … comparisons with deHaan aren’t exactly accurate … Yes, they have similar offensive qualities … but Fowler has a lot more offensive upside while still being a lot more defensively mature, and positionally sound. Think Borque vs. Berard … and no … I’m not being a wise ass… I know both players can’t be compared to them. Just using them as a comparison as far as what skill sets are in their tool box.
-
Steven, you sound like a boy with anger management issues. I posted a comment (opinion) on CB’s blog. If CB has a problem with it, I’m sure he’ll address it with me. Until then, you can keep your personal attacks to yourself. CB’s interview was great, but in MY OPINION, I just don’t think the responses were that great. I’m guessing my opinion or any others will not have any impact on who the Islanders select.
-
Seemed to me like Fowler gave the same answer every prospect gives about “what they know about the Islanders.” Do people really not think Fowler doesn’t know that Tavares and Bailey are Islanders? Come on.
-
Definitely a defenseman. Look at the 2 teams in the finals. We need to improve our backline.
-
lol Remember last year Tavares thought Long Island was a ‘city’? I guess these kids are just trying to get thru all of the combine and press/doctor stuff the best they can usually.
Best of luck to him but if he doesn’t come to the Isles then slightly less best of luck to him in his future…lol (sorry!)
-
Fowler seems like a good kid and I should probably warm up to the fact he may be on the Isles, because I don’t want to be too disappointed when another team picks Gudbranson.
-
He wants to see the area and facility!! That should be interesting
Garth better blindfold this kid when he gets on the meadowbrook
-
I am no expert but I dont think Fowler will still be on the board at 5. I do not want Gormley. I personally hope we get Connolly we need more young offense. We have de Haan and Hamonic coming up. We should have taken a forward last year with the deHaan pick. If Connolly goes at 4 I will be ok with Gudbranson just not Gormley.
-
I’ll be happy with any of the 1B group. Cam seems more comfortable on the ice than in front of the camera, which is fine with me. Good luck Cam.
-
Just curious, what if Isles don’t rate 1B and 2 the same as this board does? What does recent history tell us about Isles draft strategy? Just sayin….
-
It’s very possible that Gormley will go before the Islanders pick. He is more of an all-around defensemen than Gudbranson or Fowler, and if a team is looking for that, he could go 3rd or 4th (or 5th to the Isles). I think most scouts consider Gormley to be a 1B player along with Fowler, Gudbranson, and Connolly. He is currently rated 3rd, behind only Hall and Seguin, by International Scouting Services.
-
I want to see the Isles trade up to #3 and select Gudbranson. Go get the guy this team needs. I like Fowler and Gormley but please Garth stay far away from Connolly.
-
Take “El Nino” at #5 no matter who’s there ! He is a Lefthanded Kovalchuk ! With the 2nd round pick take Teemu Pulkinnen (best Finnish prospect since Selanne) ! The rest of the Draft we should concentrate on Defense, preferably with size ! Meaning 6′ 2 and above and 200lbs + ! Take heed of my words Garth !
-
fowler seems like a very nice young man..hopefully, when he gets here, it can be explained to him that long island is not a city, or perhaps he was thinking of the rangers…I still would prefer the islanders take gudbranson first, then connolly..but I wouldn’t be upset if fowler was available and the others weren’t..They all seem like wonderful kids, with bright futures..It all comes down to how the islanders develop these kids..getting some good veteran players to play alongside them, and not rushing the kids..should be another fun draft, looking forward to it.
-
I want Gubby or Connolly. No offense to Fowler. Gormley has ‘LaChance’ written all over him. Pass. Moving back up into the 1st round is the most intriguing.
-
#27(comment 30) Tonelli! If Nino was a lefthanded Kovalchuk don’t you think he would be the first pick overall? I agree with Quez#32. If what is said about Gormley is accurate(safe pick! solid in all aspects, but not outstanding!),save him for the 6th-10th slot where he belongs. We need difference makers here supplemented by players like who Gormley alledgedly is. In my minds eye,in the best case scenario, the kid may be a DaHaan clone. At the end of the sliding scale,as Quez already stated,he may have Scotty LaChance written all over him. I’ll take one from column A(Connolly,Gudbranson or Fowler)and pass on column B(Gormley)!
-
El Nino has done nothing against the caliber of players that the other guys have in Juniors up in Canada. The Left handed Kovalchuk? Really? Sorry he might have a good career but I’d rather take Connolly or Gund
-
No offense CB, but I want my defensemen at least a foot taller than you.
-
Gormley seems very Islander-esque. Passing over a better player to take the better person is what the Islanders are all about.
-
For someone barely taller than CB, I’d say let’s pass. Its Gudbranson or Connolly for me. No more small d-men!!!
-
Just played a quick game of NHL 10 and realized that none of my defense can throw a legit hit in a video game playing with the New York Islanders. I’d really prefer Grabrandson and not Fowler just based off that. I’d also like to see Sutton come back for 2 more years and a vet defenseman on board. We need depth, size and skill. When you look at this Cam Fowler guy, he was compared to Mike Green…and now Washington is considering trading him because he can be a liability. Let’s go for the stay at home scott steven’s type player….Gabrandson all the way!!!!
-
In Coach’s system a d-man’s mobility is as if not more important than speed up front. His whole forecheck is based on an aggressive pinch and the ability to get back when it doesn’t work out. Cam has been called the best skater in the entire draft. I smell smokescreen on the Isles supposed Gudby fetish. It’s quite possible that the brass feel they already have their Gudby in Hamonic. Fowler may be viewed as the heir apparent to Streit. The knock on Fowler is that he may not be as polished reading the play as you’d like…yet. But he already skates like paul Coffey and Brian Leetch had a baby.
-
just hope they keep the pick and dont go off the board
-
Quez (32)- Remember the scouting report on Alex Pietrangelo was similar to Gormley’s. They thought Pietrangelo was kinda soft, but had great positioning. Pietrangelo was deemed the “safe” pick and too many Isles fans said they didnt want him and called him Scott Lachance. Now he is ranked the top prospect by hockey’s future and played very well this past year.
-
Mike L – Pietrangelo is also the only one of the 4 defensemen picked in the top five that year to not yet regularly play in the NHL…
-
I just don’t see him as an Islander. Very little eye contact with C.B. But if the kid can play–then game on!
-
Connolly!! We need offense. JT needs a linemate with equal talent. We have enough defense. Hamonic and DeHaan will be up. Rumors floating about NYI signing Volchenkov. Don’t know how I feel about that. Not a big fan of Russian hockey players thanks to Oleg and Alexei.
Snow should go out and sign Hamhuis. Then we will know he is serious about building a contender through youth. Hamhuis is young. Enough of the bargain basement crap. Our money is valuable. You want to sell seats, give us a reason to buy them!
-
“Check out the rink and the facilities” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
-
There’s no way Fowler drops to 5th spot. If he did that would be huge for this team.
He’s hands down the best defenceman in the draft this year.
-
If Fowler where available at number 5, which I dont think he will, he would be hard to pass on. Even though I want a scorer. Cant wait to see who we get.
-
There seems to be no way Gudbranson will be available with the fifth pick. I can’t see Columbus passing on him. I guess Florida could go Fowler, Gudbranson or even Connolly, but I would be willing to bet a lot that Gudbranson is gone by the fifth pick.
-
He looks sooooooo small.Heck CB looks huge next to this kid.Isles need to draft best @ 5 and let kids develop in minors.Sign some friggn UFA’s already and lets become competative already.Heck whats wrong w/ the 8th seed?Ask Philly fans if they give a cr** about getting into the playoffs as an 8th seed.Heck they even needed a shootout win to get in but….does it really friggn matter. They are in the CUP FINALS w/ a so-so roster and ? goaltending.C’mon Wang sell this stuff to someone else.Get 2B+ fowards and 2b+ d-men,cut the dead wood off this team, let remaining core roster return and @ least you’ll be supplying a product worth watching.Eh and who knows what can happen once your in the playoffs..just ask Philly!!Hmmm…I wonder if they would give up a 2cnd rounder for Roli now?!
-
Darren while you’re right that anything can happen in the playoffs. You’re wrong that Philly went in as the 8th seed. They went in as the 7th. Most wouldn’t think its a big deal but the difference for Philly was. Instead of playing the Capitals who they lost to 3 out of 4 times this season, they played the Devils who they beat 5 out of 6.
-
El Nino? Yesterday he’s the next Alex Ovechkin today hes the next Kovalchuk. What are you guy smoking???
-
i see us trading up for gudbranson. florida has a new GM that built the blackhawks (i think he took over after Duncan Keith and Seabrook years) with offense (toews, kane) he may like to take connoly then… btw, Gormley may end up being the best dman in hockey for all we know… stop trying to compare him to current players (lechance, dehaan) who says he’s not like lidstrom or bourque? or even Gormley? its funny all these EJ mcQuire comparisons for these prospects, did we ever ask ourselves if 2 players are similar? is shea weber, phaneuf and pronger all the same? they are all unique. as was leech, coffey, bourque Potvin etc.. true some had more defensive or offensive tendencies but there are so many variables and things that make a hockey player, don’t knock gormley so quickly
-
taking a tour of the Coliseum? Oh man, that’s embarrassing! How the hell is that gonna work? It’ll be like a scene outta The Simpsons….you see this elaborate, state-of-the-art facility, then the screen accidentally rolls up and you see Groundskeeper Willy standing behind it leaning on a mop handle.
-
For all anyone knows, Botta could be 6’2″ 215. It’s crazy to just assume Botta is small.
-
He seems like a good guy and bottom line is how he plays and how good of a player he turns out to be, but I agree with some of the other posts that I wasnt too impressed with his answers. They were very standard and blah answers in my opinion. But like I said, its all about who will be the better player in the long run. At this point I’m still undecided on how I feel about the Isles scouting abilities. We’ve hit a few long shots but so has every team. We got Tavares who was a no brainer, even though we made it seem like it was a big deal. Calvin is TBD. So is Bailey, although his window is starting to close. Okposo just simply needs to do more even though I love everything else he brings to the table. And Hamonic sounds great but we will see once he’s here.
-
I really believe, based on everything I’ve read, that the only way we get Gudbranson is if we trade up. He’ll go #3 regardless. Who goes 4th will really dictate who we get. I think Fowler goes 4th and we’re left with either Connolly or Gormley. Connolly’s injury scares me so I think it will be Gormley. Unless Garth trades down again like he did for Bailey, then it’s anyone’s guess.
-
Maybe they are thinking Long Island CITY. They are hockey players, not cartographers.

Seems like a great kid would love to see the Isles pick up either Fowler or Gudbranson
