VIDEO: 1-ON-1 WITH TAYLOR HALL
Top prospect models his play after Zach Parise

by Chris Botta on June 14th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Now that Cablevision-MSG-Knicks/Rangers-run Newsday has published a story with a source declaring my Islanders-Mets-Queens story “ficticious” – LOL – time to get back to the draft! Here’s my interview with Taylor Hall. Draft comments.

    Hey Chris,

Taylor Hall has the potential to very well be the next high flying speedster out west in the same vein as Selanne, Bure, Mogilny, etc.
Any whch way this Draft pans out, the Isles will be getting a special player. Although I have a feeling Garth Snow will NOT be sitting on his hands come time to go up to the podium to announce the #5 overall pick.

BTW, why is Katie Strang refuting your article? Is it JUST because of her/Newsdays connection with Cablevision? I know Newsday has become bad, but THAT bad? Really?

  2. avatar potvin rocks says:

I wonder if the Lighthouse Project is going to try and do the second project completely different from the first one. I mean why else would they have the PR department contradict your articles 4 hours after you blog them. They did the same thing after you did the piece on the Lighthouse project closing up shop.
As far as Taylor Hall goes, he doesn’t seem to have a big ego, which is why he doesn’t care who he goes to. Boston has to make the Oilers an offer they can’t refuse. Wideman and #2 for number 1.

  3. avatar Paul says:

is katie from newsday under pressure to slight pointblank because it’s a competitor? why would she not cite the ‘source’ of her report in her short piece? pointblank mentions newsday and includes links to it throughout its site. don’t they understand the core journalistic values of attribution over there in melville? with two weeks to go to the draft i’ll be curious to see who breaks more isles news…newsday or pointblank.

  4. avatar (Sim)ple says:

No doubt about his abilities, but I feel Edmonton questions his dedication and loyalty to the franchise if they were to draft him. I think they worry he would bolt as soon as he possibly could. Is that doubt enough to sway them to Seguin? Tambellini has quite a decision to make.

As per Katie’s story – I’m annoyed she didn’t even site you, pointblank, or fanhouse. I wonder where he source came from: the Isles? The Mets? A Dolan/Cablevision rep? I guess more on this and the ToH’s plan on the coliseum site in the coming weeks. In the meantime, my mind’s on the draft and free agency.

  5. avatar Jersey Steve says:

I think Edmonton would be silly to pass on Hall.

And I trust Chris’ words over some unnamed source any day.

  6. avatar eye on the island says:

the report is obviously true and someone is just trying to squash it in hopes it goes away.

if they really wanted to refute it, they wouldn’t respond w/ an anonymous source.

the lhp has lost complete control of narrative and in turn the project in itself.

    queens here we come

  7. avatar 7thWoman says:

And as a mother the only thing I could think of during the first few seconds of the interview — “You’re nose itches, you’re going to have a fight.” which is why I don’t do interviews on camera. Good work as usual.

  8. avatar Manhattan Mike says:

NEWSDAY? Does anyone even read that paper anymore? Newsday Is the last place I’d look for decent information.

  9. avatar orngfan says:

people don’t forget newsday broke the story at last years draft declaring matt duchene the islanders 1st overall draft pick. so be sure to stay tuned to their coverage of the 2010 draft!!

  10. avatar BringBackNyles says:

That “source” is likely so close to James Dolan he could touch him.

  11. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Ya Newsday one of the companies attempting to get a government bailout of cash and asking them to regulate/tax the internet (thus eliminate their competition). Rather then write truthful and relevant content they want the government to bail them out. If no one wants to read you then you deserve to go bye-bye. I don’t have the paper delivered anymore because by the time it gets here it is irrelevant.

Paraise could have been an Isle except for the wonderful scouting of Mike Milbury and Gordie Clark!

I’m still hoping for Gudbranson at 5 and then Mr. McIlrath later in round 1.

  12. avatar michele says:

Hall seems like a fine young man..oilers definely take him..then in four years he’s an islander.

newsday? whats newsday? isn’t that the city paper?

  13. avatar Sheppy says:

While I appreciate your efforts, don’t waste your time on guys like Hall (note on Seguin!). Why even review him? There is no chance we will be getting him. I, and I bet most others, would prefer interviews with guys we MIGHT get, even if they are longshots. I’d rather hear what McIlrath or Tinordi have to say than Hall. Who cares who Hall patterns his game after! I say this…unless there is something I don’t know and there are rumblings that the Isles might move up.

  14. avatar Blizzard says:

….Taylot Hall or Seguin? Tough one. I would go with Hall but I’m no scout. Im guessing Edmonton is going to draft Hall with he number 1 overall. I’m curious who the majority of the fan base wants picked, kinda like last year with JT.

As for Strang and her un announced source? Interesting. Coming from a Newsday beat writer. As owners of MSG and the Rags it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that they would not like to see this happen in their backyard. Hello west side stadium? Even if it where to happen I do not see it having vary much of an impact on the Ranger fan base as an original six and a very admirably loyal fan base. Enter in owning and operating the garden however and the picture gets a bit murky.

Also given the lack of coverage Newsday provides for its only local professional sports franchise and the whole thing is just like CB said…LOL.

  15. avatar rb says:

Newsday? You mean they’re still in business? Wow! Haven’t looked at it in ages. I thought they folded.

  16. avatar Darren says:

I kinda thought I had an idea what the Isles were going to do come draft day but now after reading all this stuff leading up to the draft I just don’t know.I like Gudbranson but drafting Connoly or Nino @ 5 and possibly moving up in 1st to grab McIlrath might be the best of both worlds.Hey does anyone have any idea what the backup goaltender situation is looking like?As for the moving to Queens I agree if it makes financial sense for Isles then go,no matter what TOH offers. They’ve had their chance for the last 10yrs.Go Isles.

  17. avatar IslesUlster1992 says:

Does anyone think Newsday will break another draft pick story? “Breaking News: Isles Pick Duchene Again in 2010 Draft!”

  18. avatar Chris R says:

Taylor Hall is going to look awesome in a Bruins jersey.

  19. avatar steve says:

i trust chris botta period……. lets focus on the draft i truly believe we will stay in the new york area its the toh call if they want the isles to go to queens plain and simple.

  20. avatar Sarge says:

There was a time I read Newsday, and then there was a time they decided to charge an insane amount of money to read it…Well, CB provided better, faster, and more accurate Isles info than anything I ever got from Newsday. They can have it. I follow a blog for each of my teams(islanders point blank, metsblog, the jets blog) and they’ve always provided the information faster and more accurately than Newsday.

Also, here’s hoping Connolly is there at 5!

  21. avatar MR says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if Charles Wang takes his plans from his failed Old Plainview proposal and applies it to the scaled down zoning plan the TOH gives him and then move the team and builds the project he wants at another location in Queens or another dark horse location on LI.

  22. avatar LouD says:

Newsday is a joke. It’s completely obvious that everything written about the two hockey teams is agenda driven. Dolans agenda is to keep the Islanders, his closest (proximity) competition and biggest rival, from getting any kind of real coverage thus insuring they will have trouble attracting new fans. Why else would they choose (as a replacement for Hahn) someone with very little hockey knowledge or affiliation? Has Katie ever played or worked for any hockey team? I could be wrong but either way I’m not suprised at the accusation of a ficticious story.

  23. avatar jim says:

I can’t wait for them to go down the tubes….won’t be long now the newspaper business is hurtin

  24. avatar Barry says:

CB-It’s imperative that you respond to Newsday’s response to to your Fanhouse story about Queens. Your credibility could be at stake. I was at ESPN’s website and the Newsday reaction is noted there as well. I hope this does not blow up as you have a well respected group of followers here that trust your reporting.

    Barry

  25. avatar eastonhockey says:

No offense to Katie or any writer..but does Newsday actually pay her a living salary for 2 hours work a week? Or does she work as a school teacher and work for newsday at night from home before she goes to bed? Seriously …they dont pay her living adult wage do they?

  26. avatar MSA says:

This blog has been nothing but kind, and supportive of K. Strang. Regardless of whether you love, or hate her reporting, she doesn’t own Newsday, she works there. I doubt there was any malice intended by Katie herself, in that report. The Dolan family that controls the paper, now that is a different story…

    Just my .02

  27. avatar 25yearfan says:

As of 11:34pm – the reply on Newsday is missing from the list of updates — though it’s still accessible from the links on the right side. Glitch or something brewing?

  28. avatar metalcoconut says:

You struck a nerve with the Snow again? There goes another trade deadline interview CB. Good job on keeping us up to date CB. We appreciate your efforts as there has to be someone willing to tell the fans what is happening with the organization.

Perhaps you can wear a set of novelty glasses with a mustache and pretend you are not really CB next time you seek an interview.

  29. avatar SneakyPete77 says:

Sorry Katie, you do a good job but every Islander fan should dump Newsday. The fact that they want to discredit the very realistic notion of our team moving to Queens. Also, they are basically calling CB a liar. CB is nothing but professional.

CB, we appreciate all your fine work!

  30. avatar MattNC says:

    Found this online:

“In 1972, when the Islanders joined the N.H.L., the $4.5 million territorial fee they paid the Rangers gave them the right to occupy only Nassau County. But a 1986 amendment to the agreement allowed the Islanders to move to Queens and Brooklyn, and within Nassau and Suffolk counties.”

  31. avatar isles72 says:

my hunch tells me that CW/Rechler take the new rezoning plan and develop the HUB to the towns specifications/limitations yet still sell the team to Wilpons who would obviously move the team near Citifield .

  32. avatar gary says:

Chris, how about a specific response to the Newsday report–This is getting interesting—and you might get some free press too

  33. avatar Spartiarti RVC says:

i guess newsday will just have to admit they were wrong when it happens.

Hey CB, Can you write your thoughts of possibility of isles trading up or down? Seems to me that this kid Nino Niederator at 12 could be another Kopitar type Gem. I guess Streit if anyone would know best right? If this kid is Hope or Hype.

Seems that isles want Gudbranson. but i dont think we can get him. Do you think trade up to get him or trade down if we lose out on him.

  34. avatar dose says:

MattNC, where’d you find that stuff?
newsday used to be a real newspaper, a damn good one, but it’s literally a dying industry and almost all dailys are irrelevant. if katie got that from a source she trusts it’s her job to report it. but i trust CB on this, and when a paper is irrelevant AND wrong it’s time to fold the proverbial tent.
hall seems like a great kid. all the top picks do. but the right player for this team at this time remains EG.

  35. avatar Bryan says:

Did Newsday pull the article? I cant find it.

  36. avatar geduffer says:

Since this is supposed to be about the draft, Iwould be happy with any of the top 5 but, considering the Isles need on D, I would just love to see Gudbranson on the ice with Hamonic late in games with the Isles leading.

  37. avatar 25yearfan says:

Article is back in Katie Strang’s blog on Islanders — it now adds that there’s no development going on — BUT if there was, it would be the Mets development team doing it (Sterling). Even points out their track record in developing Citi Field….

This is a very weird way to hedge something that’s “totally fictitious”. I hope we get an on-the-record answer out of the Mets or JLL. I guess we’re in the developer-client privilege zone, right?

    p.s. The offseason s*cks.

  38. avatar anthony c says:

What is this “newsday” you speak of?
