BILLY JAFFE SHOWN THE DOOR
MSG agrees to deal, Islanders block analyst’s return

by admin on July 23rd, 2010 at 9:05 am

6:30 pm: Comments thread closed. Stay tuned for any Matt Moulson news. As of tonight, there was nothing to report on negotiations between the Islanders and the 30-goal scorer as they attempt to settle. Arbitration hearing is scheduled for 9:00 am Tuesday. I hope everyone enjoys a wonder summer weekend. Stay cool.

5:40 pm: The invaluable sports media critic Neil Best, of Cablevision-owned Newsday, backs up what Point Blank has written. Writes Best: “Three people familiar with the decision said the discontent with Jaffe came from the Islanders and not the network.”

2:35 pm: As I posted about an hour ago on Twitter, multiple sources have told Point Blank that MSG Network had a multi-year contract in place with Billy Jaffe, but the Islanders declined to approve Jaffe’s return because his analysis was not positive enough. To be blunt, I must have missed those games.

In the mix are Butch Goring, who could move up from his studio role, and Denis Potvin. if Butch gets the top job, Denis could get the studio role. No matter who gets it, do not expect even the slightest trace of constructive criticism.

11:30 am: MSG Network releases statement to Cablevision sister newspaper Newsday: “MSG wishes Billy luck in future endeavors. The network will name a new TV analyst in the near future.” Figure on a former Islander, which will make most of this go away quickly.

9:05 am: Bob Raissman reports in today’s print edition of the Daily News that color commentator Billy Jaffe will not have his contract renewed. Jaffe lasted four seasons and built a strong reputation around the NHL and with fans, adding work with VERSUS and appearing on the popular “NHL Live” on XM/Sirius that was simulcast on NHL Network.

The Islanders, by letter of their broadcast contract, give their blessing (or lack thereof) to all announcers. Although MSG Network hires and pays the broadcasters, the Islanders – like most teams – have the ultimate say. In recent seasons, the franchise has been notorious in insisting their broadcasts do not contain the slightest bit of criticism. (You won’t see any in Cablevision-owned Newsday. Last season, there were two reasonably critical articles in one day. Hadn’t happened before that day, won’t ever again.)

Despite the Islanders finishing 30th and 26th in the league the last two seasons, I never saw anything but 100% positive analysis from Jaffe. In fact, no one more optimistically and studiously told the story of the slow and steady recall better than him. If there was a dispute between MSG and Jaffe, I would think the Islanders would push to keep one of their biggest public advocates. In addition, he was a regular volunteer for the Islanders at draft parties and on segments for Islanders TV.

Jaffe has a home, a wife and two very young children on Long Island. He repeatedly said he hoped to be in New York for a long time. I doubt this has to do with anything contractually. So what I’m saying is, this one completely baffles me. I have not spoken with him in a while and did not see it coming. Since I was part of hiring the man and I consider him a friend, I’ll wait for a statement or coverage elsewhere.

i’m speechless. the one thing i could hang my hat on is a good broadcast team. i was surprised how good Billy was after we lost Joe M. to MSG. I can’t imagine we’re going to get anyone better. Jaffe was class.

  2. avatar symbol says:

now what who is up next

  3. avatar ed says:

Why do the Islanders always take the obvious decision and go the other way?? Isn’t there one sane or intelligent person in that organization who can just state the obvious and correct the nutbags that obviously run this place? Let me take a guess, Snow is going to be announcing now so we can save money. Snow took Janks job as scouting guru, Jaffe’s announcing gig and Wang’s personal massage therapist. Please, let’s start a campaign to get Wang out as owner. I don’t care where they go. I will follow them anywhere, but Wang is so incompetent that it baffles the mind

  4. avatar Bobby Banton says:

This off season is killing me

  5. avatar Ryan says:

Typical, just typical. He is class and was due for a well-deserved raise so of course he was not asked to return.

I hope he lands a gig this afternoon and I’ll give him a free pass to rail on the front office as much as he wants. But of course, he wouldn’t do that.

It’s hard to root for people that treat good employees like crap.

    Love the Isles
    Hate Charles Wang

  6. avatar doc says:

I must admit. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jaffe and he WILL be missed… I’m sure he has a bright future as hockey commentator and analyst. Good luck billy Jaffe.

  7. avatar orngfan says:

islanderspointblank suicide watch is at level orange… if jaffe shows up on ranger$ broadcasts i’m gonna be SICK

  8. avatar thepolishprince says:

Absolutely a stupid move. The Jaff was a class act. Not too much of a homer and a good match to Howie (who despite criticism by many is a real good play by play guy). Billy was a great color guy. I wish him all the best.

  9. avatar Oye Comeau Va, formerly (Sim)ple says:

This sucks. Garth to sit next to Howie???

  10. avatar Phil from Switzerland says:

this is getting ridiculous! throwing everyone out of the door! i’m starting to get really concerned about the person who makes all these weird decision…

  11. avatar Nyles says:

    well . . . we are a joke. i no longer care.

  12. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Can we revert to broadcasting the games in black and white and have it silent like the old times? I mean seriously, what is next?? I wish someone could show Wang the door. This organization is comical with it’s business decisions.

  13. avatar Isles Fanatic says:

Lo’s of strange moves this summer…more than most?? dunno, but I am curious to see what the team or MSG will do to replace Jaffe, he is a quality guy and will be difficult to replace…

Maybe Snow will be pulling quadruple duty???

  14. avatar Fishbulb says:

This is unacceptable. This organization cannot get out of it’s own way. They seem to have NO IDEA what it’s fans want. Another sad day for Isles fans.

  15. avatar Darren says:

what is really going on here?

  16. avatar Dennis says:

What a joke. Jaffe got a little excited every now and then but you could tell he really cared about what he did. As CB noted, he has become a solid presence in the media across the NHL and as it always is with the isles, we don’t want him. This just in: MSG is holding an open casting call and bake sale at Chuck E. Cheese. The winner will be announced after Johnny Wilson’s birthday party. Whoever holds the most tickets wins. What a joke.

  17. avatar Ken says:

Had a bad feeling about this all offseason. If they were going to bring him back it would have been done a while ago. Big mistake. He was the best color guy the Isles have had since Eddie Westfall. Who the hell are they going to replace him with?

  18. avatar BD Hendo says:

The fish stinks from the head.

  19. avatar Chrisc says:

I truly believe it is time for Wang to sell.

  20. avatar Casey31 says:

This is very disappointing to say the least. Jaffe is one of the best analysts in the sport. I can’t believe the Islanders would let a great talent like this walk. I wish him all the best. He should have been signed to a long term deal.

  21. avatar lorne says:

this is bad news, is Howie Rose going to be a one man show. Why can’t this team do anything right.

  22. avatar Hockey1919 says:

No comment other than to say I’m sure to enjoy Jaffe on Center Ice in some other market.

  23. avatar kevo says:

this organization is a joke. i feel embarrassed being an isles fan at times…most of the time

  24. avatar john says:

This organization continues to baffle me. When you think they are headed in the right direction, they revert back to their puzzling ways. I am afraid things will get much worse around here sooner, rather than later. Hope Jaffe lands on his feet somewhere soon. And once again I ponder, how does this team have the audacity to raise ticket prices?

  25. avatar Brian says:

It’s like Wang has a large wheel in his office and each employee has a slot on a wheel like the dollar values on Wheel of Fortune. If Wang is in a foul mood on a given day, he spins it and if it lands on you, you get fired.

  26. avatar JC Frank says:

Really enjoy Billy, hopefully this has more to do with his other work then something with the Isles.

  27. avatar es says:

reminds me of the seinfeld episode when george decides to do the opposite of what his instincts tell him – snow, wang etc. al should adopt this tact – the only thing more frustrating than the archaic decision making is the deafening silence from the front office – can’t we even get a tersely worded, cliche ridden statement?

  28. avatar JD (e_godard) says:

Pretty messed up. I became a fan of his over the last few years. Very upsetting to hear theyre letting him walk..

  29. avatar JP91 says:

I’m not going to say anything positive or negative. I’m not going to say that I don’t care anymore. But I AM going to say that I just don’t understand what the hell is going on this summer. Between Jankowski/Trotts and now Jaffe just being let go out of the blue, I just don’t get it. I really don’t. Extremely frustrating to say the least.

  30. avatar Jon says:

Sad to hear this. I was a huge fan of Billy’s. I thought he brought a lot to Islanders broadcasts and his work on the national broadcasts brought added exposure to the team. This is a HUGE loss for the organization. I have ZERO doubt that Billy will land on his feet. God knows who the Islanders will find to replace him. Do the Islanders bring an alumni into the fold? Is this the new position for Trotts?

  31. avatar beachchica says:

A HUGE mistake!!! Billy Jaffe is on of the best in the game!! He will truly be missed. Best wishes and good luck in the future!! Another wonderful off season move…..NOT!!!!!

  32. avatar Section 303 says:

Billy showed his dedication to this team during the Easter Sunday game when the Devils tied the game with seconds to go. “Oh no!!!”, he exclaimed. Too bad this organization doesn’t recognize the good people it has working for them. Once again, the fans are not heard. Wake up Wang family! Season ticket holders are getting fed up.

  33. avatar mm says:

i saw this coming. i just dont get it. jaffe was a great advocate for the islanders, hell he had more time on national nhl broadcasts on versus than the team did! not to mention i heard him on national radio show like scott ferral show numerous; he had more national exposure than the team. and he always talked about the islanders

im sure alot of readers can agree, watching the islanders can be painful and frustrating at times, and finding something to enjoy could be tough. as a fan, you know your team stinks when you start to root for the color commentators.

but the way the teams off season is shaping up i wouldnt be suprised if they brought in larry merchant and Jim Lampley to call the games.

  34. avatar Ben H. says:

WOW. This is highly disappointing. Jaffe is one of THE best color guys in the business. If anything, he made the Isles credible as he would defend the Isles rebuild on other telecasts he was part of (Versus games and play-off games). To be blunt, this sucks. Micheletti was good, but when Jaffe replaced him, it was obvious Jaffe was better. Now we are at risk for having some Gomer do color (like the guy from Tampa Bay or NESN, or worse, the guy from Columbus [who used to do Panthers games]).

Do a youtube search of the final game of the 2006 season Isles v Devils, where the Isles win in a shootout to make the playoffs, and tell me that Jaffe wasn’t the best color guy we’ve ever had.

    What is going on???:
    Gone is Ryan Jankowski
    Gone is Bryan Trottier
    Gone is Billy Jaffe

For Pete’s sake … KEEP DEB PLACEY!!!

  35. avatar MorDraftPicks says:

A big fan of Jaff, and the banter between him and Howie is (was) a good listen. Man…I hate this team sometimes

  36. avatar Dino says:

The man with an “In” Butch Goring. Hey CB who’s Butchie “friend” work for? Hmmm :)

  37. avatar bossy22 says:

It’s time to start a “sell the team” movement. There is enough fans that visit this site alone that should start a petition or send letters directly to the head office. I’m getting tired of all this negative crap with good people losing there jobs. I’ll continue reading the posts to see if anyone has an idea.

  38. avatar Peter says:

I took pride in seeing our color guy doing national games for versus appearing on the XM NHL shows. He’s obviously well respected in the broadcasting community. This makes no sense on the surface.

This has been a disappointing offseason to say the least.

  39. avatar Bossy4president says:

FAIL !!!!!!!! Jaffe’s voice and optimism during the broadcast honestly was the ONLY thing that kept me excited about this team. He went to war and stuck up for a team that obviously did not belong on an NHL sheet of ice…but he made me believe. Now they just tossed that aside like it meant nothing. I’m not too worried about Jaffe at all, he will find another gig. Most likely with VS. Best of luck to him.

Seriously whatever us fans start to love about this organization the organization get rid of it. There is no attachment to the fan base anymore. I believe this is all the beginning of the end. It’s all setup so when Wang sells and this team ends up in Canada the fan base will be so fed up that we won’t even care.

  40. avatar Bob says:

Wang is awful. His loyalty is always with the wrong people(Milbury, Yashin, DiPietro,Gordon, Snow etc..) and the good ones always seem to get away (Jankowski, Trottier, Nolan, Laviolette, Neil Smith etc…) He is an absolute joke of an owner and I hope he sells the team. At this point, I don’t care where they play.

  41. avatar dose says:

    bizarre.
they do so many things that are impossible to make sense of, and without explanation. i would really like to hear from jaffe on this and i would hope he doesn’t hold back. he owes them nothing now.
i get the feeling something big must be about to happen, or the owner has lost his marbles.

  42. avatar Gutty34 says:

I know this is an announcer and he has no impact on the on ice product but I just cant take this anymore. I am so tired of the constant bad news. I know we said that these kinds of things happen all the time with other orgs but it just seems to be magnified with the Isles. Sports are supposed to be an escape. Fun. Exciting. Why is it that the one outlet we have is for a team that creates more angst, anger, shock, anxiety, fill in the blank etc. I am not sure how much more I want to deal with this – and this is from a die hard who was sitiing in the stands with the other 3,000 fans watching Fichaud in a fisherman jersey swearing to my Rags fan friends that this team will be great really soon knowing full well we were going nowhere fast. I have defended moves, made excuses for management decisions, played hookey from work to be at the rally last summer for the lighthouse etc… I am tired of giving my time, my hard earned money, my loyalty to a joke of a franchise. Media silence from Wang is fine regarding the lighhouse. If that is how he wants to play this now its his choice. Its also all of our choices to let him know how angry we are and that it is time someone starts to talk to us. When your franchise is winning, makes good calls, competes every year – you have the right to hire, fire, trade whomever you want and fans trust it was the right decision and a good one. No explanation is necessary. When your team doesnt follow that mold, goes against all conventional wisdom – eventually an explanation is warranted. WANG – SNOW – SOMEONE – I am telling you as a loyal loyal loyal fan (just ask wife, kids, parents etc. how obsessed) you are at a serious crossroads. If something is not said to the fans – a simple state of union is all I am asking for – I am ready to pull the plug on this already. Tired of the constant BS already.

  43. avatar Adam B says:

Relax guys. It’s obvious what the Islanders are doing here. DP is going to be the next color commentator next to Howie. They need to find a way to keep him around so his salary will still count against the CAP, therefore reaching the floor.

Seriously. When you’re subjecting your fans to an arduously slow and questionably steady rebuild, why would you start cutting the few constants the fans can rely on? First the radio coverage (or lack thereof) and now this.

  44. avatar Mike P says:

Good God ( shakes head )……..

  45. avatar Rob A says:

There have been some doozies thus far, but this is the worst move of the offseason. He’s knowledgeable, appeared to love the team and has gained a positive reputation with national networks. Absolutely ridiculous that MSG wouldn’t re-sign him, but so it goes in Islander-ville.

  46. avatar mt275 says:

This one really bothers me. Jaffe is a terrific analyst.

  47. avatar Andre says:

The Islanders have done a wonderful job of making themselves irrelevant again. This franchise is a joke, has been a joke, and will always be a joke. The team should just move to Canada. Jaffe is among the best color guys in the league. He was the one who gave the Islanders positive exposure through his appearences on NHL Live. This has been an AWEFUL offseason. The team can’t keep its own color guy. What a joke!

  48. avatar Phil says:

Complete garbage / trash move by the NYI; Billy was there to give the Islanders more spotlight around the league from his work with NHL network – this is just a trash move by an organization that I’m really getting pisssed about.

  49. avatar Jim says:

First Jankowski, now this!!! This sucks. One of the best color commentators in the NHL and this jackass organization lets him go. You know your team is messed up when your play by play commentator is a fan of your rivals. You know your team is messed up when they let one of the best in the business walk away. THIS ORGANIZATION SUCKS

  50. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

    So shocked over this.

Jaffe was a true All-Star. Enjoyed his insight on Sirius / XM, Versus and felt fortunate to hear him 82 games a season for the Isles. His enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for the Isles and hockey will be sorely missed.

Had a chance to meet him at a bar in Long Island the night of the Tavares draft and he was truly a great guy and class act with a passion for what he did.

Best of luck in the future. I am sure he will have no trouble landing a better gig.

Another very curious move this offseason for the Isles.

  51. avatar John says:

This is disgusting. Another short-sighted move that will not be properly spoken for. I met Jaffe at the 2009 draft party and have nothing but positive things to say about him. I’m going to miss him on the broadcasts… another challenging day as an Islanders fan.

  52. avatar lorne says:

post 41, that was a dead on comment. I am tired of dedicating my time and disposable income to this team especially during these tough economic times.

  53. avatar hyedray says:

This further suggests a real lack of professional behavior through the public relations of the franchise.

Together with the lack of a new contract for Jankowski, and Trottier, and now with Jaffe. No statement, no reasonable remarks.

We all stand back and watch free agents pass on the Isles. I have been wondering for a while if it has more to do with the treatment that the personnel of this organization are receiving rather then the state of the building. This is not first class at all—it is low class.

With the lack of this franchise to renew contracts, mark down this date — I am predicting that Scott Gordon’s contract will NOT be renewed for 2011-12.

    Very disappointed — again!

  54. avatar Hollywood says:

What is the issue with the organization! Simple decisions are totally becoming a joke. Jaffe was great, I hope that their is more to this story!

  55. avatar potvinrocks says:

It is very baffling. I love his analysis & his repoure with Howie Rose is enteraining and fun for the listener.
The only reason why they would do this is to hire Denis Potvin.

  56. avatar Jason P says:

I met BJ at the Tavares party through a friend who works for the team. He went out of his way to make sure all the people working the event from the team were taken care of (food, drink, etc) while they were working. Not sure many other color commentators would do that for anyone. Just another black eye for a team that I root from living in NJ.

  57. avatar Frank James says:

Maybe they will just try to use the broadcast feed of their opponents.

This goes along with their beyond bush league radio situation.

This team just does not know how to treat fans.
In the grand scheme of building a winner a tv analyst is pretty trivial.
But when you have a real professional working the games it makes the broadcast that much more enjoyable.
I would hang in there in games that were already decided to listen to Billy & Howie talk Isles hockey.
This is just another small move by the Isles that will infuriate the fan base, rightly or wrongly.
Its like the go out of their way to anger their fans.

I will wait to hear the story but it sounds like a real good tv guy was shown the door for little reason.

No need to wish Billy good luck, he will have a succesful career. Most likely in a much better hockey environment.

  58. avatar Bri On LI says:

And now that I’ve read your words, CB, I see you’re as baffled as we are. I don’t know what to say. I guess I’ll just have to wait for the rest of the reports. What a way to start the weekend.

  59. avatar jason says:

This is getting ridic. I am getting disgusted with the way Wang is runnig this team. Last yr the crap he pulled w the TV ppl, then the ass’t GM. Almost to the pt i hope he sells the team!!!!

  60. avatar jislander7 says:

just when you thought it couldnt get any worse. I cant wait to watch top 4 dman Mark Eaton this season.

  61. avatar beatlebailey says:

funny the things that break the camels back…because of this i am done as an 8 year season ticket holder after this season ( since I prepaid) i feel like a jackass giving this two bit organization my money when they do everything third class…geezus being a fan should not be work. F them.

  62. avatar Jeff says:

This is yet another day in a long history now that I do not understand why/how the NY Islanders run there business day to day. I personally really enjoyed Billy’s commentary and thought he was honest in his views of what he was seeing on the ice, and you know what if the truth hurts so be it. I am sick and tied of these professional sports team keeping their commentators on leashes so they can not say the truth about what they are seeing, and that goes for YES as well. Sometimes we as fans need to hear the people reporting on the game see it, talk about and complain about as we as fans do. This is again another sad day for me as an Islander fan, these days are starting to build up and my desire to give my hard earned money to a franchise that I believe does not care about winning as badly as they say they do are coming to an end.
Billy, I wish you and your family the best of luck and want to say thank you for saying to the fans what needs to be said sometimes about the play on the ice.
    Good luck and best wishes.

  63. avatar JeffBayside says:

One measure of a franchise is its media people and he was as good than even Jiggs McDonald. The man knows his hockeey as well as any one on the air anywhere, good sense of humor and has integrity. Get him BACK!

  64. avatar Jim Clark says:

I’m sure MSG and Wang look at the Islander’s dismal ratings and concluded it’s the fault of Jaffe. The 18 years of no playoff series victories couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it. Farewell, Jaffe. May you end up as lucky as Peter Laviolette has after being booted out of this mess. Hint to your replacement (if there is one): rent, don’t buy.

  65. It took me a little while to warm up since I was a fan of Joe M, but this is just absurd. Billy was the man, full on supporting the Islanders with genuine love for the team and the kids we have coming up.
Every thing this team does seems like a disgrace these days. I just have no more confidence.

Anything that seems no brainer to do, not only will we not do, we’ll do the total opposite leaving everyone unhappy. What are this team’s motives behind all these moves?
Could they make it any harder to support…

I feel the Wang Must Go chants/posters will be in full effect this year. I don’t like that sort of stuff, but it seems beyond that point now. State of the union or something is needed.

  66. avatar Kevin Lynch says:

I am beyond upset about this i mean if the team stink you better have people who at least make the game enjoyable to watch. MSG and the NYI should be totally embarrassed by this, though not that getting embarrassed bothers them at all since they do it constantly.

  67. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

What possible reason could the Islanders have for not wanting Jaffe Back? The only thing I can think of, is the Isles know he is a very smart hockey guy, and as we all know, they hate being surrounded by smart hockey people because they have absolutely zero knowledge on how to run a team. They do not want to be exposed, which is pretty funny because they already are. The whole league knows we are a joke, and now our very loyal and defensive fan base is running out of excuses for these bizzare and toxic decisions. Why do they insist on alienating anyone who has a passion for this team, that includes the employees and the fans, who have yet to even be acknowledged throughout this depressing summer! Who’s next, Matt Moulson? I am worried because he is our leading scorer, a genuinely nice guy who likes playing here. Oh, Oh—you know what that means!

  68. avatar Mook says:

I give up.. totally give up. Are they TRYING to turn fans away? I don’t get it

  69. avatar Steve from Jersey says:

Why? Jaffs was always postive always upbeat and had a lot of respect around the league. I dont get this at all, what is trots gonna call the games now. This just doesn’t make much sense at all

  70. avatar Jeff says:

Would love to see Denis Potvin come back to LI to do the Color. He is very good on NHL netwrok and would be a great and logical choice but let’s remember who we are dealing with so you know it will not happen

  71. avatar JT says:

Why get rid of one of the best color guys in the game who wants to be here? Also, the team gets free publicity every time he is on Versus and XM. Terrible decision Charles. How about some stability for this team? Get it right for once.

P.S. I wonder how long Jiggs and Eddie would have lasted under this regime.

  72. avatar Hoser14 says:

Thanks Little Jimmy Dolan!!!! I guess the Rander$ needed the money to hire Issiah Thomas. Maybe Howie Rose will be going solo-Radio & TV

  73. avatar JP says:

I met Jaffe at champions after the second game of the buffalo series. There were a couple of plays that were reviewed by the refs in that game and I won’t forget the patience and friendliness Jaffe showed to us fans who hadn’t seen a replay in explaining each play to us from his point of view. Just a classy guy who was passionate about hockey and really enjoyed his job. the isles went from A+ tv and radio coverage to…howie rose. No offense to howie, but it would be nice if the isles considered the view of their customers once in a while.

  74. avatar Blizzard says:

    …classic.

  75. avatar CG says:

Very sad to see him go. Everyone was mad when JM left to the Rangers and they brought in this “no name Jaffe”. He ended up better than JM. No consistency anywhere, not even in the broadcast booth. Would it be shocking if the next piece of news is that Howie will work alone this year. This team really stinks.

  76. avatar Pritchett54 says:

This really bothers me. This bothers me more than most of the decisions that are made regarding personnel. Jaffe is a huge reason watching this disaster of a franchise has been bareable the last few years. What a joke.

  77. avatar Andre says:

I am very convinced now that if there was no salary cap floor, Wang would pull of a Millstein/Gluckstern and strip the team to a bare bones minimum. I agree with fans who want to start a “Wang Must Sell” chant.

  78. avatar PTA says:

When are they going to realize that with these actions and no communication from the team THEY ARE ALIENATING THE FANS…could this be the intention or the lack of any publicists….

  79. avatar EdTurner says:

Another day and another championship move by the Islanders.

They really should move to Kansas City as they are being run by the Kansas City Royals.

  80. avatar JPinVA says:

…and the hits just keep on coming.
    Dear Charles Wang,
Please… go away! Go visit Sanjay, and stay a while. Leave your real estate leverage… I mean the Islanders to the league to run…
Up next, the NY Islanders in Mandarin Chinese on MSG VII, simulcast in English on Wometco pay-per-view.
    Chris,
I’m sure I speak for almost everybody here when I say you do an outstanding job… but doesn’t it get tiresome cleaning up behind the elephant?

  81. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

Jaffe will be missed. He is great at what he does and will continue to grow into one of the young, bright commentators in the game.

Whoever fills his shoes, will have big shoes to fill.

  82. avatar mrc says:

This bums me out. I absolutely loved How and Bill together, and always look forward to them going off about how new composite sticks break too much. Ugh, no one will be better than the Jaffster.

  83. avatar Anthony says:

Is there an Islanders contact that we can all complain to? I feel like the news is getting worse and worse with this team. It’s bad enough that we don’t even know if the team will exist in a few years. I really think Wang needs to start communicating with us fans – and I am a Season Ticket Holder with expensive seats. I need some answers now!

  84. avatar Mikey Islanders says:

lol, just move the team already. Nobody on LI deserves an organization like this. This organization and Kansas City fit like a glove. There, Wang can run the team into the ground and nobody will care.. it’s like an everybody wins type of situation.

Soooooooo beyond done with this team.

  85. avatar isles66 says:

Major bummer. Have to admit I wasn’t wild about Billy in the beginning but he really grew on me and in my opinion became a superb NHL anaylst. The decision making process on this team continues to baffle.

  86. avatar Tyler says:

I am nothing short of FURIOUS – this lack of loyalty to many of the people who have supported and helped the team over the last few seasons (Trottier, Janks, Jaffe) is truly appalling, disrespectful, and leave a horrible taste in both these men and all Islanders fans mouths. The organizations is showing absolutely ZERO heart this offseason and doing nothing but upsetting, angering, and frustrating Islanders country. Why should we the fans stay loyal to an organization that isn’t loyal to themselves? I don’t know what’s going on in that front office, but this one puts me over the top.

I hope the best for Jaffe and that he lands a job somewhere soon and that whoever the Islanders have in mind (bc you’d hope it has to be somebody legit who they really support in order for them to do this) is half as good and supportive of our Islanders team.

  87. avatar Hock says:

Huge shoes to fill…that’s all I’m sure of at this point.

  88. avatar ny711ot says:

I think in wangs evil mind he believes if the tv broadcast is lousy, he’ll sell more tickets.

  89. avatar JT says:

I bet Goring gets the job, although Jaffe is light years ahead of him skill-wise.

  90. avatar cjzimm says:

Another illogical move. Bring back Billy.

  91. avatar mbk says:

any truth to the rumor that Sparky the Dragon is going to be in the booth next year.

  92. avatar alex says:

This really is awful. He is easily one of the best color guys in the game, and he was so on our side. you felt that he was living and dying with every win and loss. What about doing an online petition?

  93. avatar Cary says:

Bummer – Billy, you were awesome and I would’ve loved to have you around for the long-term.

  94. avatar Jeff says:

Another strange move by a team that lacks any p.r. sense at all. But this one concerns me far less than the failure to sign any credible free agents.

  95. avatar stevek1510 says:

i don’t care how much wang says he loves hockey and this team…it is obvious the fan base cares more than he does

  96. avatar bob says:

all i can say is WHAT THE HECK!!!! jaffe is the man

  97. avatar Michael Delman says:

I am very disappointed in this decision. During our dismal 2008-09 season, my wife and I went to see the Islanders play the Sharks in San Jose and waited after the game to meet Jaffe, who we watched via the Center Ice package every game. Billy Jaffe not only introduced himself, but actually talked extensively with us about the Islanders and how he thought some of our younger players were shaping up for 30 minutes after he had just worked an entire game. Neither of us will ever forget how gracious he was and he made a couple of fans for life that night. This is a terrible decision.

  98. avatar IsleFan73 says:

Wow, this one I just cannot defend the Isles and Wang. CB, it is also upsetting to get your interesting take on Newsdays lack of journalistic independence regarding sports teams. That’s really sad and upsetting.

  99. avatar Hoppy from Atlanta says:

Horrible news….. I have been a big fan of Jaf’s from the days with the Thrashers where he provided consistent, fair and unbiased dialogue before making the move to the Island…. Needless to say, I was overjoyed to learn that Jaffy would be teaming up with Howie in the booth. Though Howie has far more history with the Islanders’ franchise, Jaf was certainly my favorite component of the broadcast team (well, aside from Butchie, of course) as he brought a vibrant energy to the booth and certainly seemed more objective and in-tune with the younger side of the Islanders fanbase. Having followed Jaf for a decade now (first with the hometown Thrashers and later with my beloved-since-birth Islanders), I was obviously elated to learn that he was joining Howie in the booth and now equally deflated to learn that he will not be covering Isles Hockey. Though Jaffe approached his occupation with a youthful passion that seemed to be a perfect fit for the rebuilding Isles, he was always honest and treated our team with the utmost respect. And let’s face it…. Few are those who can cover the Islanders honestly and without sharp criticsm. Somehow, Jaffe managed to find a silver lining for all the dreadful events, both avoidable and unavoidable. His termination makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. If there were issues between Jaf and team management, I’m sure those issues could have been addressed and dealt with. Firing him via letter without a face-to-face only adds more salt to the many wounds that longtime faithful supporters of the NEW YORK Islanders have been bearing for all too long now. With yet another seemingly unproductive offseason, there are few things we fans of an UNDER-the-cap franchise can take pride in. Having a passionately energetic man like Jaffe on our side was one of the few positives left to snuff out. I have sided with team execs over the years, citing that Snow has actually performed incredibly well considering the resources from which he can manage his team, and I have also been supportive of Wang over the years -despite his meddling in personnel decisions and ridiculous ideas like the “Sumo Goalie Project” – knowing that the NVMC situation is a deathblow to ANY franchise, and we can only fault the man so much for throwing tens of millions into a proverbial trashcan since attempting to rescue our team from FAR worse ownership (those of us old enough to remember the Spano/Gluckstern and Milstein atrocities will attest). Nonetheless, decisions like this only fuel the fire and seem completely irrational and senseless.

I wish Mr. Jaffe the best of luck in his future endevours. Some fanbase will be getting a very vibrant and devoted color man.

I only hope Billy is able to catch wind of these threads and know how much the Islanders Nation appreciated his service with the team. Thanks for livening up the broadcast, Jaf… We fans appreciate you!

  100. avatar matt says:

this is a joke. I cant believe that they would let him go. well we are the isles so another great move. In other news we signed a 4th line bridgeport fighter instead of player who actully has a chance to score goals or help our young players develop.

  101. avatar KK says:

I’ll add my voices to those saying they are disappointed to see this news. The Isles are dropping the ball on this one. Jaffe shouldn’t be going anywhere. I hope there is a good reason to be moving on. Color me skeptical and annoyed though by this change.

  102. avatar Pritchett54 says:

Why doesnt someone start a keep billy jaffe website or protest or something? this whole thing really pisses me off.

  103. avatar 27Tonelli says:

Jaffe was great, gonna miss him ! This team is in shambles !

  104. avatar Tim F. says:

This is just terrible. Billy was among the best color commentators in hockey – - very perceptive, insightful and knowledgeable. I can only assume that this is another cost-cutting measure, on the heels of the Jankowski and Trottier departures.

What further indignity can we fans suffer? Wait I know – - next season’s TV braodcasts will consist of a blank screen, with a simulcast audio feed of a radio broadcast done by a blind announcer.

    Stay classy, Charles.

  105. avatar Jay says:

I’m totally bummed out by this. Why???

  106. avatar dose says:

ERIKA TENCIC- Why do they insist on alienating anyone who has a passion for this team…
Mook – Are they TRYING to turn fans away? I don’t get it.
PTA – …THEY ARE ALIENATING THE FANS…could this be the intention,

    CB? any input on this?

  107. avatar eric says:

The Isles are completeley disloyal to anyone involved with them who cares.
This is very disappointing, everyone who’s contract is up, is shown the door. Every position within the organization and involoved with it, is a revolving door. How can the Isles gain any respect in this league if they don’t give their own people any respect. The organization is a joke.

  108. avatar eric says:

    BOOM!!!

  109. avatar Bill C says:

    I smell Potvin

  110. avatar Jim says:

I’m baffled by this move too. Billy was a huge improvement over Micheletti. What baffles me even more is how someone can call themselves a diehard fan and then say they hope the team moves to Canada or KC

There is nothing better then seeing a hockey game live and it’s kind of hard to do when your team is in another country or state.

  111. avatar isles says:

Once again, Mr. Wang does not get it. Rewarding the wrong people and letting the good one’s go. Still have not read or heard anything about Janikowski or Trottier. If not for this blog, I would not know anything. Time and time again you have to shake your head and wonder when we will get back to being a legitimate organization.

  112. avatar Chris TMC says:

Oh Great. I should have known that because the guy is popular and Isles fans seem to agree on howe much they like him, of COURSE that means he is gone.

    This TOTALLY SUCKS.

I cant believe they are doing this to us.
WHY are we treated like this????????

  113. avatar James says:

    Opening night cheer:

Sell the Team! Sell the Team!

  114. avatar onesinceforty says:

Well, if we don’t like who they hire we can just listen to the radio broadcast. Oh!, I forgot we can’t do that.

  115. avatar Anthony says:

This is not a suprise to anyone who follows this team. CB you are right, an ex Isles will be hired and Jaffe will be forgoten. My guess is Denis Potvin who was let by Fla last year. As long as its not Goring. Billy will be missed!

  116. avatar Bronx 56 says:

    I always liked his work

  117. avatar Nosebleed says:

Send in the clowns….wait, they are here and looks at though will remain.

The level of stupidity regarding this organization never ceases to amaze me. It’s like they gather in some dirty board room and ask what they can do next in order to further anger a dwindling fan base. Wrong and Snowjob should walk on the ice during the opener both wearing “I’m With Stupid” t-shirts.

Classless, tasteless, just more garbage from a garbage “organization”.

  118. avatar Chris TMC says:

One last kick in our faces: Billy didnt even get the chance to say goodbye for the season, let alone forever- since we got screwed out of the end of season postgame by MSG.

I am at work right now but Im so sad at this news I honestly think I could cry.

  119. avatar timm says:

this is absolutely unbelievable. Jaffe single handedly got me through these last couple of seasons turning the most awful, boring, mundane hockey into deep analysis of the game, witty banter with Howie, and hope for the future. The New York Islanders drop yet another bomb on us and I am truly upset about this move. If his work in the NHL Playoffs on VS wasn’t enough to realize that this guy is the real deal, then something is very very wrong with MSG and the NYI. Hope they find a way to realize this was a huge mistake.

  120. avatar Brian in VA says:

Jaffe was fantastic… I will continue to boycott this JOKE 80 games a year, they always suck me in when they visit DC… I will be chanting Snow during the games as always… Wang too! 20-52-10 YAY!!

  121. avatar mitch167 says:

well this sucks. Joe Micheletti or Butchie please? maybe king

  122. avatar Mook says:

I love the Isles and try to stay positive, but this off-season is just such a buzz-kill. All the Lighthouse hooplah, firing of this guy and letting go of that guy. The signing of crap-pile free agents that DOWN-grade our team. I’d rather go to the Rinx and cheer for the Seawolves hardcore, than waste anymore time and money on this embarassing and pathetic franchise. I could have never dreamt after 4 Stanley Cups that they would turn into this much of a laughing-stock. Also sick of being laughed at by friends who are fans of other NHL teams.. even the pathetic overpaying Rangers!

Here’s to 4,000 butts in the sticky and disgusting NVMC during home games this season…garbage

  123. avatar Allen says:

LOL, just another feather in the Islanders DUNCE cap. Welcome to the Clippers of the NHL, wow, what a joke.

  124. avatar fred says:

This just feels wrong, anything the fans can do to get him back?

  125. avatar Orange&Blue says:

I can’t wait for the day where Wang fires himself and sells the team to anyone with a clue. This coming from an owner who preaches loyalty! What a joke! He has shown the door to 3 loyal employees, one an Islander legend. Where are the explanations? Katie Strang needs to start asking the difficult questions or will she be fired too? We deserve explanations to these baffling moves. They have no problem calling our homes looking for us to spend our money on tickets yet they feel entitled to make decisions without any type of explanation! I dont think so! They wont see a dime from me.

  126. avatar matt says:

it better not be king or micheletti i dont like either of them.

  127. avatar Kevin W says:

Billy was the man. He was a great broadcaster. I met him two years ago as he was leaving a golf outing. He stopped and talked to me for a few minutes. I wish him the best of luck

  128. avatar Sidd Finch says:

I don’t know if it had anything to do with being in the area, but Billy Jaffe was doing live feeds from the NHL Store in NYC during the playoffs. I can’t believe that the NHL is so cheap that they would look to save a buck by using a local commentator rather than someone they considered a great on air talent. He was also doing a number of playoff games so I agree it speaks to his quality. It is shame that this is happening, but like any good free agent, he will be scooped up in a matter of days nby a team that is in transition. The Islanders have had many great analysts over the years that went onto much bigger and better things, including George Michael and Pat Ryan. For his sake, let’s just hope the same is in store for Billy Jaffe. On the bright side, maybe they can bring back a little Islander nostalgia and put Steve Webb or even Mick Vukota next to Howie Rose!!!

  129. avatar ralf says:

Just another day in Wang’s World. I have a feeling this upcoming season is going to be the biggest debacle in Islanders history, and that says a lot. If Wang doesn’t sell this team there is zero chance of them ever being anything but the sad joke that they’ve become under his “guidance”. If Wang loved Long Island and the Isles as much as he says he’d sell or step aside from involvement in hockey operations and…oh I don’t know, perhaps hire somebody with A CLUE to run the team. Snow is just a “yes” man and a G.M. in title only, I’m sure this is the consensus around the league and I really don’t know how he has the balls to attend G.M. meetings. All of the other G.M’s laughing, calling him names, never letting poor Garth join in any G.M. games.

  130. avatar Brian says:

    And another one gone
    And another one gone
    Another one bites the dust

  131. avatar Sidd Finch says:

Sorry, I meant to say Tim Ryan. Got my Mets/Jsts/Isles history a bit tangled up.

  132. avatar JayK says:

This morning, I was riding my bike on Chicken Valley Rd., where I think Eddie Westfall lived at one point. I was thinking about how awful he was as a color man, especially after Joe Micheletti and Billy Jaffe showed what true analysis was. And then I read this.

  133. avatar the bomber says:

i swear the decisions made around here must be made on a wheel of chance or something. There’s no way an intelligent human thinks this stuff out.

  134. avatar cusi - Thomas Mancusi says:

Why? They guy makes every game to watch enjoyable. He is fair, knowledgeable and talented. Loved by the fan base. Once again…Isles make you scratch your head.
    Thank you Billy!

  135. avatar kingbet123 says:

I’m always positive but this is a horrible move, no doubt. Will we hear why or will it be like the Jankowski deal….just silence. I would love Katie Strang to poke around and tell us whats really up. Not happy at all….love the Jaf on NHL Network.

  136. avatar isles711 says:

A true class act. Good luck Billy.
You are probably better off getting away from this rinky dink organization.

Absolutely RIDICULOUS move by the Isles.
    I am disgusted.

  137. avatar Jim says:

Doubt it would help but we should all send complaints to customerservice@newyorkislanders.com

  138. avatar Tucson Isles Fan says:

Since the draft this team has not made one correct decision. Im always harping on the negative people on the site and showing the silver linings but with another “unexplainable” move, this team is beyond help. I hope all season tickets holders dont renew. The mgmt team needs a severe wake up call.

  139. avatar ed says:

Hard decision but I am not going to any games at the barn until Wang sells the team. I will watch every game on TV rather than give my hard earned money to an idiot who can’t even get to the cap floor, but proceeds to raise ticket prices. Can’t believe it has come to this, but I can only be abused for so long from an owner. I should have stopped going when Snow took over. Will always love the Islanders, but Wang isn’t getting another dime from me.

  140. avatar Bryan says:

I am so pissed that this is the news I have to wake up to. I know this is a homerism, but Jaffe, to me, was the best in the biz. I love everything about the guy. Howie and him made such a killer tandem that this move absolutely blows me out of the water. I was upset when we lost Michaeletti, but I never realized that someone could be so much better. Jaffe was that and more. This organization and MSG are so messed up letting one of the best things they had slip right through their fingers. First chant opening night: BRING BACK JAFFE!

  141. avatar Lav says:

Is it bad that this move bothers me more than anything else they’ve done this offseason? Sick…

  142. avatar isles71 says:

I live in Atlanta and played hockey against Billy J. for a few seasons and over the years, had a personal friendship with the man. Billy is one of the nicest and gracious persons you will ever meet. This seems like yet another mistake made by the team, but that aside, we will miss your positive, yet honest broadcasts nightly. Good luck to you and your family.

  143. Why are we still fans of this joke of a team? Why? Why do we show blind loyalty to a team that is loyal to nobody else? I mean, I’m not surprised by this news, but it’s sad and tired that nothing surprises any of us anymore. Clearly I’m upset by this lol

  144. avatar StevieL says:

Jaffee is a great commentator and a class act and will end up on his feet! It is just amazing all these impulse , classless org. moves that are being made. It is impossible to believe that we are viewed anywhere in the league , by players or executives or anybody as anything but a joke organization that must be avoided at all costs. CB, thanks again for getting us the breaking news. Islander nation takes another hit!!

  145. avatar smith31 says:

I just sent an angry note to my Islanders rep who is trying to get my to renew my tix package from last year. The moves are bad enough, but the total lack of comumunication is worse. Sorry Isles rep, I’m going to just buy tickets on the day of the game for $3 and a can of Schlitz….

  146. avatar Patrick says:

Who cares. He was a mediocre analyst at best. Hopefully Howie is next.

    Good riddance.

  147. avatar Angelica says:

This is absolutely ridiculous. Billy Jaffe has been nothing short of a class act for the past four years. His broadcasts with Howie Rose have often been the best part of watching Isles games, since it sure as hell hasn’t been the on-ice product. I learned so much from Jaffe during his time here… this just sucks.

  148. avatar Mofunky77 says:

We let the Ranger lovin snore-a-thon Howie Rose stay, but lose Billy Jaffe. It sucks being an Islanders fan!!

  149. avatar joe says:

what a load of crap, wangster youve lost your frickin mind.

  150. avatar The new isles gm says:

Sounds like a political move….Do I see Butch Goring next in line….I think so……..

    You will be missed Jaff!!

  151. avatar Hud says:

One reason I made it through all the games on center ice was jaffe, I would listen to other games and jaffe was just better. This is getting tiring, I am questionable for the hockey package this season. Good luck Billy, another team will gain from the Isles stupidity.

  152. avatar Vas says:

Isles are have open tryouts for the announcers position. $10 Bucks an hour to start. No experience required. Open trouts for the team also. Garth just got a raise to $12.50 an hour.

  153. avatar UIF says:

Not a fan of Howie, but Jaffe was good with that ultra-excited, “He activated because he was engaged!” Something’s been going on the past two years with all the curious moves and especially cost cutting. It’d be nice if the fans who marched on Wang’s behalf to public meetings in support of the Lighthouse project weren’t just left out in the dark now. It’s pretty sad when league-owned Phoenix spends more on its team and seems to have its stuff together more than the “self-made billionaire-owned” Islanders.

  154. avatar Lucas says:

This is extremely disappointing. Day after day it gets worse to be an Isles fan. The organization barely cares about the product on the ice and certainly doesn’t care about the fans (but they try to make up for that with….cupcakes?).

  155. avatar Mike L says:

I will miss Jaffe. When I worked at Starbucks he came in a bunch of times. He was a nice guy that would introduce himself to any fan that recognized him. I asked a while ago if he would be back and he just said “we’ll see”. He told me how he understands this is a business and things happen. Too bad, I hope Versus could at least give him a job.

  156. avatar Pritchett54 says:

I know a lot of people do not like howie rose, i personally do, but i know plenty of people who dont. On the other hand, EVERYONE likes Billy Jaffe. Everyone. I dont get it.

  157. avatar shlo says:

Wang can do whatever he wants with his money. It does not mean we have to pay for starnge decisions. What do you mean “no criticism?”call it as it is.

Welcome to a third world dictatorship. That is the way the Isles look.

  158. avatar GB from P'view says:

This Organization is nothing but a shell of it’s one proud self.

It’s bad enough that we can complain about the on ice product(ironically enough not too much to complain about there once we are all on board with the complete rebuild) but the off ice moves are a sickening soap opera that defies logic. It’s almost like a cheeky horror movie.

I can no longer defend this joke of a team which has been in my blood since 1972. I don’t blame Wang for holding onto Milbury for years or signing Yashin and Dipietro to lifetime contracts. The moves can be questioned but you could argue the logic behind them. The recent string of decisions just defy logic that really only affect the hardcore fans like us who know better. It’s like the Islanders are TRYING to cut everyone off who actually care.

I know it must be Saturday Night Live and we are in the Bizzaro World.

  159. avatar ant says:

Jaffe was great to listen to.First Jankowski then Trottier and now Jaffe. This has become a big joke and someone needs to ask why they let all three of these guys walk.

  160. avatar Merrick says:

This Isles are inflicting death on their fans by one thousand small cuts. Even the Kool-Aid drinkers from the front office have not figured out a positive spin to post here.

From what I see and hear, Billy Jaffe is a class act, although he’s not my favorite color commentator. I guess he’ll be replaced by one of the summer interns from Wang University.

It’s intersting that Mr. Wang–whose own family was severly impacted by one of the most censorous and murderous regimes in world history, is so thin-skinned himself. While I can certainly make a distinction between private and government censorship–the only available response I have to this private sector decision (and so many others) is to simply not spend any money on this team.

As much as I hate saying it, I have reached the point where it would be better if the team moved or folded than to continue putting up with this garbage.

  161. avatar msolo says:

    WTF
The one guy whos done nothing but show support for this team
great way to repay a guy for his loyalty
sell the team charles , sell it quick
your are now, truly not deserving of this team
please sell to someone like jeff wilpon , atleast he’ll build a new rink and support this team
billy jaffe gone – what a joke

  162. avatar rb says:

When Jaffe was hired, I was skeptical since I was a fan of Micheletti (whose work has really gone downhill since joining the Rangers). But he really grew on me. I saw Jaffe at that Easter Sunday Devils shootout in the Meadowlands before the game and personally told him that. Nice guy. Good luck to him. I mean, why would we want to keep a guy who’s developing a national presence on Versus anyway, right? (Sarcasm intended.)

If Denis Potvin is up for it, hire him. I know some people question his work, but this is Denis and it’s the Islanders.

  163. avatar Islander86 says:

This type of dictatorship is everywhere.
    It is not Isles only.

  164. avatar patrick says:

I KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN…. i never wanted to see him leave…. i had a bad feeling about this when i heard his contract is up… if joe micheleti comes back i dont know if i can ever watch a game again… Worst way to start a friday…. TERRIBLE!!!!! islanders r done

  165. avatar geduffer says:

This organization blows chunks! My wife isn’t going to like this, but I’m ready to wash my hands of this team and go elsewhere. Next stop e-bay to look for a Bolts jersey.

  166. avatar John says:

    Yikes. What a PR nightmare.

  167. avatar Jeffrey Meissner says:

Pathetic. As is Newsday’s response. Jaffe is a professional. Wang is demonstrating that is not what he is looking for. He wants drones. I am an Islander fan since the first pre season game against the Rangers in Sept. 1972, and I know that “Hapless” team was not as inept as this management team appears. It makes you believe that Kate Murray might have some legitimacy. No, that can’t be right.

  168. avatar Mkrall says:

I thought Billy did a great job and he will be missed. Maybe Sparky will be the new color man for Howie.

  169. avatar JerryC says:

Jaffe was the best analyst/announcer since Jiggs McDonald. Do you think the Islander mgmt can see their mistake by the 100% support for Billy by the Islander faithful on this site. Anyone talking NYI hockey in July are the Isles hardcore fans. The mgmt should reverse their decision for the fans. This year, so far, Snow has not made the on ice product any better than last year. Now we will have to listen to an inferior product on TV. Definately ‘progress’ is not the Isles middle name.

  170. avatar RyFromLI says:

You know there’s a problem with this organization when all 130 commenters on this site are completely against this move, and most moves that the Islanders make for that matter. This is a disgrace, we are the joke of all sports franchises.

  171. avatar AB07 says:

I think this is the best move the isles have made in years. If I had to listen to Jaffe run through replays and simply point out the obvious every game for another season I would have lost my mind. I’m so happy he’s gone, his lack of hockey sense and knowlegde just added to the fact that our franchise is the laughing stock of hockey, maybe even all of sports. I really couldn’t bare another season of listening to his senseless input. The man was wrong about 90% of what he said, each and every game.

  172. avatar Brett says:

This organization needs to stop kicking its own fan base while they’re down.

  173. avatar Bill says:

Just another statement in a joke of an organaztion.

  174. avatar JayK says:

New isles gm — 131 — I think that’s a good observation. They’re paying Butch already; why not have him go up in the booth? It would not surprise me if that’s in their thinking. Or….stick Chris King up there? Again, all cost-driven, since those guys are getting paid already.

  175. avatar Mikey Pants says:

What’s next? Are we gonna get Marble-Mouth Butch Goring with the Analysis?

Nothing this Organization does ever makes me say, “wow, classy move…they did the right thing” ever. We always have to do things the unconventional, lowly-ISLES way.

If we don’t have the facilities that other Teams have can’t we do SOMETHING First Class?

  176. avatar Tony F. says:

Par for the course. Let’s see, hard worker, passionate about the team, qualified, professional, and loves living in Long Island; yeah let’s not renew his contract, it just makes too much sense. It was inevitable Billy would move on to bigger and better things, this just accelerates his movement to a more national spotlight. Good luck man, we’ll miss ya.

  177. avatar Mikemyers says:

Maybe Kevin connely didn’t like him…

  178. avatar Ken says:

I’m very upset by this but I think a bit of the anger directed toward the team and ownership is unwarranted. He worked for MSG and in the end it was their decision. Could the Isles have fought to keep him, sure, who knows if they did or not (the continued silence is another story). But really what leverage do they have to force MSG to keep him. Cancel one of the most lucrative contracts in the NHL over a broadcaster, I don’t think so.

  179. avatar NHL fan says:

Just another reason to ignore this franchise as long as Wang is the owner.

  180. avatar JoeRiverside says:

Going against the grain here…. will reserve judgement until I see who the replacement is.
Me personally…wish they would keep Jaffe and get rid of Howie..he’s such a cornball. IMHO

  181. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

This could be the worst offseason since 1994 … and there’s lots of competition.

I’m not saying that the whole Billy J. thing is a catastrophy … but it’s another off ice issue that underscores anything related to this club as far as stability is concerned.

CB as you pointed out Jaffs was a huge advocate of the rebuild, and pointed out the positives and gleened over the negatives … sometimes to my aggrivation … but Jaffs was a huge PR mouth piece for the Isles in the NHL world.

I have no idea why SnoWang didn’t come to his defense when Cablevision decided to pull the plug on their competition’s biggest media advocate … Maybe … and yeah … You can cry I’m a conspiracy theorist …. but … Just maybe … The reason is Jaffs sometimes ridicules (Ranger fan) Howie Rose just a wee bit too much. Ridiculous? Probably … but just sayin’. I’ll be standing by like you CB … but not holding my breath for an official statement.

  182. avatar Bill C says:

Strang saying MSG to name new analyst in “near future”. HA!

  183. avatar The Mick says:

This seems to open the door for D. Potvin. He was the Panthers anaylyst and since moved to the NHL Network for a while.

Suprising move, always liked him. I’m sure it’s money.

  184. avatar Reese in Chelsea says:

This just sucks. I thought Billy was the best commentator we’d had in a long, long time. This really stinks.

  185. avatar txdbog says:

every time this team does something its like being kicked in the gonads! its amazing how they can continually abuse their fans yet we all just keep taking it…

  186. avatar WM says:

Post 41 — You absolutely NAILED IT. Nothing else to add. Was born in ’67, became fan in ’72. Enough said.

  187. avatar Matt S says:

    Bring back Jiggs and Eddie!!

  188. avatar Madchef says:

I think Jaffe is great and would have loved to see him stay on forever, but can anyone explain what why and who decided not to have him back. MSG, ths isles? Are we not entitled to answers? I know Jaffe is great and sure we will still see him on Versus so hopefully his replacement does not suck.

  189. avatar admin says:

Why would any reader deduce this has to do with cost-cutting? The Islanders do not pay the announcers and Jaffe has to be replaced. Next!

  190. avatar Nick says:

All I can say is Good Luck Jaff!!! You deserve better than the NYI.

  191. avatar Brian G says:

    what a joke

  192. avatar Quez says:

Goodbye and goodluck,Mr. Jaffe. I’m sure you will not be without a job for very long. I’m saddened by this move, as Jaffe seemed like the perfect fit, a young, enthuisiastic announcer covering a young team and growing with them. Even when the Isles looked putrid, Jaffe was able to put a positive spin on it without sounding like he was full of spit. Although this does not affect the team, it was a nice security blanket for the fans, hearing his ever positive commentary, while working well w/Howie. Not happy w/this move. Can’t wait to hear what hayseed they trot out to replace him. Oh well, just another day in Isle paradise.

  193. avatar Pd says:

this franchise is getting ridiculous. Can’t even keep great broadcasting? Jaffe is a premier color commentating broadcaster, which it shows through the way he’s on versus during the playoffs. He’s knowledgeable and always positive even when the islanders are on a downfall. Not resigning him is bulls*it.

  194. avatar sean says:

    Wang is destroying this organization

  195. avatar IslesAl says:

Disgusting. They make it more difficult each week to support this team.

  196. avatar Vas says:

CB, you are 100% correct! It may not be cost cutting on the Isles part. Maybe it is MSG cutting back on having a quality announcer for a team that doesn’t have the greatest of tv ratings. In the end the isles obscurity may have played a part in this. What do you think?

  197. avatar stevedepot says:

Chris, I deduce this has to do with cost cutting. Did you see how much Jaffe ate? Seriously, this guy was a pleasure to listen to and I’m shocked and very disappointed that he won’t be back. Chris King would be great but Billy Jaffe’s enthusiasm, knowledge and humor will sorely be missed.

  198. avatar Original Rob says:

    Wang Must Go

    Wang Must Go

    Wang Must Go

  199. avatar IslesAl says:

CB, perhaps its cost cutting on MSGs part? How we live in a world that allows vertical monopolies and competitors to control the broadcasts of its chief two competitors is beyond me. The corporate package of companies that Ranger ownership is allowed to have is simply not capitalism. Do we know for a fact that MSG is allowed to set a budget without charging the Islanders for every $ over their set budget, hence causing the team to take a hard line stance?

Perhaps Billy is perceived as a young rising star in NHL circles and the MSG family does not wish a competitor to have a better analyst than their team. The conflicts of interest to allowing one family to control two professional sports teams, their broadcast networks, the cable service distributing and controlling the broadcasts, the news channel reporting and the only local newspaper, is this a free market?

  200. avatar Petey Pete says:

CB, how long do you estimate before it’s announced that all home games will not be televised?

  201. avatar 2277 says:

Some of you so called fans are funny. I swear many of you just look to complain. He was the color commentator, thats all! I am not throwing a fit over him not being resigned. Jaff was good but he is not an irreplaceable part. If #5/ the Captain is the new color guy, how many will be so sad that Jaff is gone?!

  202. avatar Staten Islander says:

What a HORRIBLE decision. This truly bites the big one.

  203. avatar OhNoItsComeau57 says:

This is disappointing. He really provided nice game analysis. His quality was particularly noticeable on the rare occaisions I would catch a rags game and hear Joe M. “Boy Sam, what a pass. WHAT A PASS!”

Whoever lands Billy is very lucky. He and Howie also had a great on air raport.

  204. avatar Matt in CT says:

Jaffe was probably the only thing Isles related that got any respect around the league… Which speaks volumes about what a joke this franchise is.

Just another minor example of why nobody wants to come near this organization. From players to staff at any level… I imagine the process goes like this.. “Hi this is NYI we’d like to bring you in..” player/coach/staff: “Wait, the same NYI that hasn’t won a playoff series in 17 years? The same NYI that has sewage pipes burst where I’m supposed to work? The same NYI that proposes a play-in tournament for last place teams?… I get all this PLUS the likelihood of being let go at any moment for no reason what so ever? SIGN ME UP.

I guess we shouldn’t be so negative, we have MILAN JURCINA!! Woooo! Season tickets must be sellin like hot cakes, right Charles?

Ahh the greatest show on earth continues.

  205. avatar io20720 says:

I will miss Jaffe – My money is on denis Potvin replacing him

  206. avatar OhNoItsComeau57 says:

#201, I will give you that if Potvin is the new guy it will make this an easier pill to swallow. It would be nice to bring another NYI legend back in the fold.

  207. avatar Smitty031 says:

what a bad, bad, bad job by the Isles.
The Jaff did a great job. He will be missed.

  208. avatar Donna says:

Sorry to see him go, wonder who the replacement will be. . .Would love to know the real story behind these personnel shakeups. Just weird.

  209. avatar fred says:

You know what, Westfall was great, Michelleti was not so great, Jaffe was great, if we get another former Islander from before I was born it wall fall on deaf ears.

Time for this team to start looking forward, IT’S BEEN 27 YEARS, GET OVER IT.

  210. avatar GB from P'view says:

Aside from poor grammar (hate not being able to edit posts) what the Islanders also loose is a guy who is obviously recognized and valued in hockey and NHL circles. He is involved in all high profile gigs and with his presence and support of the NY Islanders could only be of benefit.

Now that has been cut off I ‘m sure he is too much of a professional to bad mouth the team (they gave me a chance, were great to me for four years, etc.) and he will no doubt land on his feet elsewhere, even if it involves relocating a young family- it is part of the biz but I think the Isles are being incredibly short sighted.

  211. avatar John says:

I am sorry for Billy and his family. What a great professional! Don’t worry Billy you will have great success somehwere else.

  212. avatar Mike from Sarasota says:

Baffled by an Islander decision. What else is new?

  213. avatar JP91 says:

I’ll say this — I’m absolutely sad to see Billy go. He was an asset to this team in the broadcast booth and in the media in general. However, if Denis Potvin is the replacement, which seems to be a possibility, I’ll be happy with the decision.

  214. avatar Xavier says:

I was thinking Potvin also. And then I thought of Trottier, since he was let go, to fill another position with the organization. Shrug. guess we’ll find out soon enough.

  215. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

    That sucks. Jaffe was good.

  216. avatar sean b says:

that is absolutely discusting letting him go…jaffe and howie work so good together and I know msg might not like it but i love that he calls it like it is, not to mention you can tell how much passion he has for the game. F U MSG…

  217. avatar Russel Ginart says:

Good luck to Jaffe, he was fun to listen to. As most of you have already stated he always gave the Islnders good press. To bad to see him go. HE WILL get a better gig soon.
I hear “Sparky” the dragon has been let go!!

  218. avatar Al L says:

Billy was probably the only link left in this Organization reminding Islanders fans they are apart of the NHL! Perhaps Wang, the clown that he is,felt intimidated with his strong reputation. Quite frankly Billy has outgrown this mess and will be better off in the long run. Here was a guy who actually wanted to be here, made he and his family apart of the Island community, knew hockey inside and out from a players standpoint always one step ahead of what was happening on the ice,was sharp as a tack and has become one of the better analysts in the business, but unceremoniously sent packing. I have come to the conclusion the owner here has either lost his mind or finds pleasure in going against the grain, disappointing and disenfranchising loyal fans. Either way,his behavior borders on insanity! My passion is moving further and further away thanks to this crap and realize the Sun will come up the next morning with or without this lousy deceitful Organization.

  219. avatar Tyler says:

Chris PLEASE SEND THIS TO BILLY – let him no how many of us are upset about this – i mean it wont make him feel that much better but he’ll at least be a little appreciative

  220. avatar AJ says:

I really think we, as fans, deserve some answers after all these crazy moves. But of course, we won’t get any. Great to be an islanders fan.

  221. avatar Chris G says:

I really liked him also. His voice is nature to me when I watch the games, I wonder who else is gonna fill in now.

  222. avatar Schultz39 says:

This is too bad…..I really liked Jaffe.

  223. avatar IslesFanInTN says:

A typical Isles moronic move. Jaffe will have a new gig by this time tomorrow and the Isles will hire someone who is half as good at half his cost. I will bet the new announcer is Denis Potvin.

  224. avatar Al L says:

#213! Cablevision does the hiring only after the Club gives the okay! They, the Club reserve the right of instructing a firing or not renewing when and if they see fit. Jiggs McDonald was let go years ago after he expressed his concern for the future of the Isles while on the air! Who do you think pushed the pink slip and envelope on that one?

  225. avatar IslandGirl says:

I’ve been an Isles fan since 72, had seasons then, was present for the Cups at home, been through the lean years in the beginning and the glory days. But these years make Spano, Gluckstern and Milstein look like a cakewalk! Holy Raisin Bran, what’s next!?

Since Bettman doesn’t give a rats you know about the Isles, SOMEONE needs to asks some questions of Wang about his intentions, because his actions do not dictate GOOD WILL towards his team. Maybe he’s TRYING to run them into the ground so he can move them. Maybe I’m effin NUTS, you have to be to still be a fan.

I moved from my beloved Island 5 years ago to WAY upstate NY, but still sit there watching, cursing, crying, throwing objects at the screen. But this summer has been HISTORY MAKING as far as EFF UPS in Islanderville.

I loved Jaffe, he was terrific, MILES better than Joe M who is such a Rag$ homer now. I am so shocked by this, I cannot think of any reason for it. Maybe he’s the better for it though, getting out. I wish him nothing but success in his life and career. Of the two, why didn’t they get rid of Rag$-lovin’ Howie??

And here we sit, drowning in Islanderville, wondering WHY we stay and what’s coming next.

  226. avatar Islesfan629 says:

Another position Garth can take over.

  227. avatar mht says:

    I am speechless,Jaffe was terrific.

  228. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Please not Dennis Potvin, he is a great guy and an Islander Dynasty player but he isn’t very good on tv. I’d like to see him on the ice helping the players and prospects.

Best of luck to Billy Jaffe who was outstanding and great to listen to. He even knew what he was talking about. It is ANOTHER MAJOR MISTAKE BY SNOW WANG. They wonder why players do not want to play here it isn’t just the building it is that they do a lot of wierd stuff.

Greg Logan was taken off the Isles because he wrote some articles about how they needed to be bigger and tougher and improve the defense. Newsday moved in a young reporter who is more easily maniupulated.

Jaffe rightfully mentioned size and toughness amongst the list of things the Isles had to address and he’s gone.

Jankowski who was given much of the credit for Isles recent draft successes, probably said something like “we have to do better then add guys like Jurcina and Eaton, if we want to make the playoffs” behind closed doors and he got the ax.

Point is, Snow doesn’t allow anyone to have a slightly different opinion nor does he believe we fans have the right to know why Jankowski is gone, why Riechlecz is gone, why Jaffe is gone. He makes all these moves and he refuses to speak to the media unless he wants to. Story he doens’t like he ignores it and he can get away with it because he’s eliminated everyone except Botta but you notice with Botta once he wrote a few honest pieces (that were fair)he was ex-Isled from access and PB then became totally independent.

I have to watch on center ice and I can tell you Jaffe was better then every guy out there, he was a positive for the Isles. Rose not so enjoyable to listen to but Jaffe really made some very rough years a bit easier.

I am uncertain why Snow and Wang love to make it so hard on us Isles fans.

  229. avatar Frank nyc says:

STUPID MOVE! loved the JAFF… he was the only one who made Howie tolerable. This i just don’t get. Amazing i have been willing to just let go or understand the Isles personnel desicions. But the 2 moves that pissed me off the most were letting go Jankowski and now the Jaff.

  230. avatar Jethro09 says:

At the end of thed ay, this is a small issue, but Jaffe’s departure is just another bad decision by the Isles this off-season. First, they let Janks walk away and don’t even acknowledge his existence on the way out the door. They let Trotts go and don’t address that decision either. Now they let Jaffe leave the booth, a guy that the fans for the most part enjoyed watching.

It just seems to me that this organization is a train-wreck from a Public Relations standpoint. They may be making wise decisions regarding player personnel (and even that’s questionable), but outside of the draft party, the rest of the off-ice decisions made by this team this summer have been terrible or at the very least handled terribly.

  231. avatar Hockeyboy says:

This organization is a joke and I care less and less each day. Just go away already. Not going to spend a dime to support them this year. Billy Jaffe was a class act. The Isles will replace him with Chris King. Poor man’s color commentator.

  232. avatar matt says:

You know Billy would be on NHL live talking about the isles and it was so nice to have someone actully bring us up not for being a joke. Now thats gone and i just dont understand why hes gone. I know logical thinking and this team doesnt go together but there has to be something we just dont know about cause it doesnt make anysense

  233. avatar Sheppy says:

Could Jaffe’s replacement be Pat Flatley?

  234. avatar Dave says:

    Figures. Terrible.

  235. avatar seabass says:

    Everybody Wang Chung tonight!

  236. avatar ledzep121212 says:

#223 Jaffe had a contract with Cablevision not the Isles. So Dolan and the rest of the awfulness that is cablevision made the decision to let him go. The only say the Isles an Charles probably had in this was giving the ok to let Jaffe go. But to put this solely on the Isles and too say that you are done with this franchise is a little ridiculous.

  237. avatar Brother Rat says:

oh jeez, just heard this. what a huge loss to the Isles and the fans. another disconcerting move, but we’ll see what happens.

  238. avatar eric says:

    maybe DP can do color?

  239. avatar Ari says:

    Disgraceful!

  240. avatar steve says:

    POTVIN’S CUPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  241. avatar Jim says:

Why don’t we all become Harlem Globetrotters fans? No losing, just winning. No embarrassing management decisions either! WIN WIN!!!

  242. avatar rick says:

well its official “Sparky the Dragon” will be taking over the color commentary for the new york islanders. A move that the organization feels will be a positive one. Thanks Billy Jaffe!!! LOL!

  243. avatar dose says:

no, letting jaffe go isn’t the end of the world and yeah, it will be pretty cool if they bring in #5 to replace him.
the problem is how they do things, and don’t do things. they have a way of just a getting things wrong – a knack, as my dad used to call it. not all things, but enough to commonly upset a lot of their most ardent fans. and they seem to misread their fanbase, or worse, not read it at all. it’s becoming a pattern, somewhat like that other orange and blue team. but i think it’s safe to assume the buffoonery over there is unintentional, and i’m not so sure that’s the case here anymore. either way, it would seem to make that possible move to willets point somewhat appropriate, in a pathetic sort of way.

  244. avatar andy4isles says:

Who’s next, the ushers and beer vendors?

  245. avatar Michael Pastore says:

This makes no sense at all. Neither do the Jankowski or Trotts moves. Katie Strang is a puppet that spits out only what the Islanders and Dolan tell her. She has none of her own sources except the Islanders management themselves. I agree Howie Should be the one to go if they were going to let somebody go, but why would MSG let go of a RANGER FAN!
The only thing I could think of the reason for that move is to make room for Trotts or Potvin. They did say they were going to look for a job for Trotts to stay in the organization, and Potvin is out of work.Other than 1 of those replacements this makes as little sence as them letting go of Jankowski!!!!!!

  246. This organization just keeps getting more and more laughable as the dog days of summer wear on! Yet another NYI disgrace. Is there no such thing as loyalty in this god forsaken world anymore? Oh yeah, we’re still loyal to that goalie we signed for thirty seven years. He’s taken away $9,000,000.00 for about ten games played over two years. And you guys thought Kovalchuk was the highest paid hockey player out there!

  247. avatar Jim M says:

    Barnum and Bailey Circus act..

  248. avatar CJCB says:

Yes! Nothing personal here just really could not stand listening to him. Man adding fighters and getting rid of Jaffe and im starting to really look forward to this up coming season. Im in full understanding at what they are trying to accomplish and have nothing really else bad to say about the Islanders. My negatives the last couple of years have been lack of toughness and Jaffee. Nothing bad to say about the kids and letting them grow and the ultimate hard task they have in getting better players here now and in the future. Stay the course and good things will come in the end. Patience from here on out. Im sure if they could do more they would. Lets go Islanders!!!

P.S. just please play one of the enforcers for the regular season is all i ask!!!

  249. avatar jmo16 says:

I dont know much about what commentators make but I can’t imagine BJ was asking for John Madden-type money. In fact, Billy was such an Islander supporter, I’d bet he’d do the job for almost nothing. Very strange and confusing. It seems, with this team, that for every positive/pleasant surprise move they make, there is another equally-opposite action to follow. Me no understand.
Maybe they’re going to “Live Sound” broadcast – no announcers/commentary, just the sounds of the game. I remember they did this for one period of a game a few years ago. It actually wasn’t that bad…

  250. avatar Sal says:

This is horrible. The Jaff was a great broadcaster.

  251. avatar suttonfan says:

Comment 140 nailed it. This is another kick in the chops by this organization. So many inexplicable decisions continue to be made. This is the third one in about a month. (make that four — Kevin Connely at the draft table). Why can’t we have a well run organiztion based upon intergrity, transparency and loyalty. I can live with low budget but not low integrity. It is becoming getting very hard to root for this team. We need better leadership. End of story.

  252. avatar slsangus says:

    CB for color commentator!

  253. avatar hathead68 says:

Thanks Jaffe for all the good work. A true professional and class act. Good luck. Hope you land on your feet.
With that out of the way… What the heck is going on here!?
Other than a good draft (oh yeah, thanks Jankowski), this whole offseason so far has been one big clusterf#@%!
Jankowski, Trottier, now Jaffe. Do the Islanders even have a PR dept?

  254. avatar Drouin says:

Isles have plan to increase tix sales by decreasing quality of broadcast.

    Best of luck Billy.

  255. avatar Healy says:

Stupid stupid stupid move. The Jaffe was great. And with his national exposure gigs, he subtly threw the Islanders into the conversation all the time. The guy had great analysis and it seemed like they were on track improve the quality of the broadcasts. MSG seemed to give him more replay doodle tools last year and I liked that not only did he analize, but taught at the same time.

If any Islander brass is reading this, GET THIS GUY BACK NOW. One thing I could pride myself on was that our MSG broadcast team were consistently chosen to work national games. That tells you something about their work!

CB, what is with all the shedding this organization is doing this year? Why do they have such a terrible line of communication with the fans on these decisions? I am an eternal optimist but I am starting to get pissed.

  256. avatar George says:

I am now offically fed up with the whole friggin thing. I don’t give a “S” about them any more. I am leaving this horror show of a team. Lets go Jets! For the love of Pete I hope they don’t break my heart too. That is too much to hope for. It’s no use, I am a Met fan too. This crazy off season should be no suprise. Typical abuse to the LI sports fan.

  257. avatar Patrick says:

Please let the new color guy be be DP.

  258. avatar Frank James says:

If Potvin is coming back that still does not warrant letting Jaffe go.
Huge Isles fan and love Potvin but its still not right.

  259. avatar Tom NYC says:

Good Luck Billy. I really enjoyed his broadcasts and especially his enthusiasm.I thought he was an upgrade over Joe M. It’s an indication of the good job Jaffe was doing that he started doing national games on versus. I was proud to see our Isles color guy getting that exposure. I’m sure there is an expanation for this, we all know not to expect to hear it from the Isles. Thanks for the coverage CB. Good to know someone out there still cares about us Isles fans.

  260. avatar JJ says:

I have a feeling he’s going to be replaced by Butch Goring.

  261. avatar dino carillo says:

last it was the radio guys this year the tv guys .whos next dp and his 15yr contract.what a joke way to go wanger.

  262. avatar Brian says:

Does this team need to do something stupid every single month? Seriously, they are a joke. Jaffe was great at his job and will be for whatever future job he ends up with. Unreal.

  263. avatar Max'n the Hamptons says:

So maybe we can have DP and Weight in the booth now when they’re not playing.

  264. avatar Andy says:

Billy…please come back to Atlanta. He’s one of the best color/analyst guys out there. What are they thinking?

  265. avatar frankgeno says:

What I liked about Billy was that he was modern and had his finger on the pulse of the league and the state of hockey. So is it disappointing? Yes. But who knows maybe we will be surprised and Potvin will get the job. Again, not as modern as Billy but I think the younger fans need a little more of a connection to the roots and what made it all so great. Not just seeing the banners or hearing the Rags fans chants. Honestly, having Potvin or Trots here where their hearts are, I think that can work out for us as the team improves. Don’t you think those two guys and other alumni would love to see that team flourish like it once did? Absolutely.

  266. avatar MR says:

I smell a Potvin/Trottier move here. Terrible decision letting Jaffey go. One of the best in the business. Not just one guy’s opinion, all you have to look at is how many outlets pick this guy up for high profile work. What’s more baffling is how Howie Rose keeps his job while the color commentator door keeps spinning? Thats right Howie, keep making baseball references during a hockey game and season them with obscure references that fly 30,000 feet over the audiences heads.

  267. avatar ML says:

Are you kidding me? What a joke! One of the few bright spots in this orginization. Maybe they can put Wang in the booth.

  268. avatar Brett says:

Billy’s analysis was particularly noteworthy. He was great at explaining, for example, why a given player made a mistake and he was great at using replay to this end.

I remember during a live chat that CB hosted here, there was a survey asking readers to grade his performance. He received something like a B+ average, and–if memory serves–when notified of this by CB, his response was that he would work hard to improve his grade. A true professional and a class act. He will be sorely missed.

  269. avatar MattyB says:

What an absolute disgrace. I wonder if they just put a bunch of names in a hat every couple of days and pick one out. That name gets fired. This organization is absolutely disgraceful. It’s ok they’ll make up for it next year by finishing 23 in the league…Championship

  270. avatar matt says:

i wonder if wang or snow reads this website and understands how on the edge we are as a fanbase. i mean there is so much love for this team that we had 5,000 people show up for a prospects game. The PR department is being run by some stupid people because they should know that every little mistake made and every change that people arent happy with will be blown out of proportion cause of the state of this team right now

  271. avatar Mike says:

Why would they do this? Jaff was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and dedicated to hockey in general, and the team in particular. Another confusing — if not boneheaded — move…

  272. avatar Ajax says:

Wow, this team just never stops pissing off the fanbase. Amazing

  273. avatar kurvers28 says:

So to recap our summer: raising of ticket prices, the usual we offered more to free agents talk, the Kovy disaster, no major additions, no Lighthouse progress, Jankowski, Trottier, and Jaffe. Did I miss anythng?

  274. avatar cgs878 says:

We’ll miss you Billy, but I know we’ll see you again on other NHL broadcasts. I guess you’re free to sign on full-time with Versus now. Good luck in the future, you’re a class act in my book.

  275. avatar Jeff1988 says:

I believe the new color analyst will be Sparky the Dragon – will not have to worry about him saying anything controversial about the team.

  276. avatar Steven says:

I thought MSG controlled the broadcasters and the team had no control???

  277. avatar Chris says:

I wish we had some clarification on who was behind this move. Was it MSG, Islander management or both? Regardless, it’s getting depressing to be a fan of this organization. I told my rep yesterday that I wouldn’t be renewing my partial plan.

Walt would be proud of the work done here by Charlies. #mickeymouseorganization

I wish Jaffe the best. I wasn’t a big fan of his, but I did realize how important he was to the organization. His presence on Versus tells me he’s very well respected within the NHL media circles.

  278. avatar Alex says:

You have to wonder what goes through Isles’ management’s head when they make this decision. Based on the moves on Trots and Janks, they’ll probably bring in a no-name who will work for nothing. I’d hope this is a ost-saving move. Otherwise, whoever made this decision has cost the Isles a knowledgeable broadcater, who really is one of the best in the business.

  279. avatar David Kraviz says:

This is ridiculous. I admit, I felt the same way when Micheletti left, but once I got used to Jaffe, I found him to be a terrific commentator. He had great chemistry with Howie; showed enthusiasm and a quick wit; had great info on all the opposing players; and broke down plays as well as any analyst. And by all accounts, Jaffe’s a great guy who loved living on Long Island. I don’t understand why they didn’t keep him. It’s incredibly disappointing, and I wish Billy the best wherever he ends up. Someone’s gonna get a hell of a good color man.

  280. avatar battfist says:

Early on…I wasnt the biggest fan of Jaffe. After the last few seasons, I learned from watching and listening to Jaffe do his job…that he is very good at what he does. And like many others have already said-Jaffe supported the Isles!!!!

This move makes no sense. As a fan it is a turnoff when you continue to witness questionable moves with no team response. So I ask myself, why should I spend my hard earn $$$ on a season ticket plan???

  281. avatar Ken nyc says:

I hate being a fan of this team sometimes. Good luck to the “The Jaff”, he was a great broadcaster and will be missed. This makes no sense. If it ain’t broke…

  282. avatar Mojo says:

Another kick in the groin this off season by the Islanders. We let walk one of the best color guys in the NHL. I’ll miss his insightful, colorful and energetic commentary. Good-luck Billy. A classier organization awaits you.

  283. avatar rm2247 says:

please everyone relax…jaffe is the lucky one here…he will find a new job for a way better organization than this crap!

  284. avatar Honnold says:

    DISGRACEFUL.

  285. avatar Chris TMC says:

I talked to someone pne of the PR workers for msg broadcasting. She confirmed to me that it is MSG who makes these decisions. I am writing a letter tonight to MSG to express my disappointment with their decision. Its not like they dont usually make bad choices in regards to the Isles coverage, sadly that is what they are known for. Im gonna miss Jaffe so much. :(

  286. avatar Dan says:

OK so here’s the thing, I thought Jaffe was great on Versus and on his spots on the NHL Network, but horrible as an Islander color guy. I for one don’t think he turned to garbage by stepping in the Islander booth, meaning that it is a clear reflection that the powers that be (wheoever they are)are dictating what is and is not said during broadcasts. Because let’s face it, the amount of homer-ing in Islander broadcasts is HORRIBLE. Whoever we bring in now will do the same as Jaffe did with us: say a lot fo words, but don’t say anything important. I just hope Center Ice has a lot of the away telecasts this year so I can get honest actual analysis of how the team is actually doing as opposed to the lies we get told every game on MSGPlus!

  287. avatar Don in Westchester says:

Not that anyone will be reading this reply down 270 or notes, but all I want from this team is a little stability…no changing plans, or coaches, or GM’s, TV annoucers, or scouting departments, or assistant GM’s…every couple of years!!

When will we do something right and not have to redo it in a couple of years!?!?!

  288. avatar Helene says:

I sincerely hope that Billy Jaffe longs onto this site – and feels the outpouring of affection from us all. I have read little of the previous blurbs, because I am so ticked and cannot believe this could happen. So who really owns the Islanders? Charles Wang who could veto letting Bily go or Mr. Dolan, owner of the Rangers. It’s bad enough our TV broadcaster is a Ranger fan, but to oust our only voice in the media. Outrageous. Disgusting. How can we get this message across to our owner – whoever he is.

  289. avatar mrlbem says:

I think slsangus (#250) has it right. CB would be the perfect replacement. He did well on the radio alongside Barry Landers (?) years ago and is now a nationally renowned NHL blogger. No one knows the Islanders better and certainly no one has a better understanding of the psyche of Islanders Country. I’m being perfectly serious here. I think that Chris Botta would be the best choice to replace Billy Jaffe.

  290. avatar Tom says:

How does this affect our 30 year rebuilding plan?

  291. avatar Brian G says:

Please No Goring – there are only 2 canidates I can think of:

    1.Potvin
    2. Chris King

IS there anyone else who could be a canidate? please don’t tell me Rob Carlin or CJ Papa

  292. avatar znatokhokkeya says:

    WTF, he was fantastic

  293. avatar loontoons says:

I LOVED Jaff, and had the pleasure of chatting over a couple of beers in MTL.

Any chance that Billy wanted a huge pay increase now that he has gotten all that exposure? Maybe Jaff knows what hes worth. He will surely land on his feet. Just thinking

  294. avatar isles316 says:

If you are unhappy as i am. contact your rep or isles customer service. let them know how unhappy you are. demand an answer. if we all cause a stir maybe we will get an answer. cant hurt and better than doing nothing

  295. avatar Mike says:

Another head scratcher in an off season full of them. What’s next? Regular season home games closed to the public?

  296. avatar miket says:

I heard Garth Snow will add color commentary to his job responsibilities

  297. avatar PFR says:

I wrote to Islanders and MSG voicing my displeasure. What else can we do? I feel very helpless as an Islander fan. What is their strategy – How far can we push our fans before they give up? My answer: Not too much further.

  298. avatar Brad says:

I’m thinking it’ll be one of the following:

    Butch Goring
    Denis Potvin
    Chris King

I’m hoping for Denis. 2nd choice Chris King. Last choice, Butchie.

  299. avatar Zarley Z says:

    CB,

Thanks for the correction on cost-cutting. Taking recent stories into perspective (syndicated radio, letting Jankowski go, spending only to the cap minimum, etc), it becomes easy to view this in a negative light and as a cost-cutting move with Jaffe. Maybe it still is, but it’s MSG doing the cost-cutting. Either way it’s a little more salt in the wounds for an already fragile fanbase CLEARLY desperate for stability and success.

  300. avatar Tim says:

I feel for him and his family, but I never enjoyed his work. He talks entirely too much and acts as if he played in the league for years. I’d much rather see and hear Butch back there, if that’s where this is going.

  301. avatar IslesinOside says:

    Islanders School of Business 101-

    1. Go completely against what the fans like and what the fans want.

    2. The fans opinion doesn’t matter. Ever!

    3. If you think the Fans opinions matter please relearn Isles School of Business 101 -Rule#1

  302. avatar Vas says:

    Billy Jaffe! YOUR FIREDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!

  303. avatar Devon says:

If it’s Butch Goring, I’m never watching another Islander game. Jaffe was awesome. And never negative. Remember the Devils game to end the season three years ago, when the Islanders allowed that goal with half a second left? Jaffe was screaming “Oh no, noooo” along with every fan. Terrible decision by Wang.

  304. avatar Al S. says:

Leading up to and through the draft things appeared to be looking up for the franchise, then as usual they go and do things that just make you shake your head and draw a negative light over the franchise…the whole Ilya fiasco (yeah sure we were interested), getting rid of Jankowski (the person responsible for drafting all this good young talent), Trottier (the person responsible for helping develop the talent) now they get rid of a very likable, competent announcer who most fans really seem to enjoy…If these folks were doing a bad job then I’d say fine get rid of them, but you can’t argue the significant increase in the talent level over the past few drafts and there aren’t many people I’d rather see developing our strong core of up and coming talent then a HOF Islander legend. Lets go back and also look at the recent parking price hike and getting rid of the radio broadcast. What next is Charles going to get rid of the head coach and medical staff, maybe we can bring in Kevin Connolly to run the show. This franchise is an endless source of frustration, they seem to be pinching pennies here running a third rate organization, it’s no wonder nobody wants to play here when given a choice. Rant over back to the real world.

  305. avatar Daoust 301 says:

First Jankowski then Trots now Jaf

    No radio broadcasters

    Still under the cap floor

It all leads to money. Charles, please sell the team or move and put us out of our misery

  306. avatar BT says:

The last of too many last straws.

  307. avatar DavidNYC says:

I must say I am very disappointed in the news. Jaffe was a great analyst and not only made each and every game more enjoyable to watch but also taught me a lot about hockey in the process. He will be missed. Best of luck!

  308. avatar Bill says:

    NOT POSITIVE ENOUGH!!!!!!!!

This team’s management is a joke.

  309. avatar Jon #2 says:

Jaffe was good but most of the games have been unwatchable; does it really matter who the color man is with a poor on ice product? Let them win a few games, then I will worry about the announcers.

I do agree it is another kooky move by management.

  310. avatar Bill says:

Sorry. There should have been some ??? Mixed in with my !!!

Utterly at a lost right now. Does anyone @ the Coliseum even listen to the games?!???!

  311. avatar cgs878 says:

If anything, I thought Howie was less positive than Billy. Oh well. Maybe they want everyone to listen to the games on the sparkling-clear radio broadcasts instead? *gag*

  312. avatar Nick says:

Wang only bought this team for the real estate- wake up! We’re dead last in payroll! There’s a bankrupt team that has a higher payroll by almost $10 million for Christ’s sake!!! How is this situation any different than Milstein/Gluckstern years? Stop drinking the kool-aid! Wang’s cutting costs everywhere to the bare bones minimum…. there is no hope of recovery; we’ll just lose our young players when they get old enough for free agency.

Ive had it with this mickey mouse club. Just move the damn team already so I can become a Devils fan in good conscience. I hope Wang never gets his damn lighthouse real estate pig out. Hes a profiteer and a thug.

  313. avatar Chin says:

Pathetic, heaven forbid someone speaks openly about the state of the Isles. Never thought Jaffe’s commentary was negative anyway. Will miss his insights. Can’t we get something positive this offseason??? Note to season ticket sales office – lose my number.

  314. avatar Al S. says:

Just read CB’s latest tweets, “Jaffe not positive enough” seriously? this is why he was let go? Isles management has no *@$#% clue. None. They need to seriously consider begging their former PR guy to come back and save them from themselves, they are just a public relations nightmare. CB were you not “positive enough”?

  315. avatar Joe says:

    Islanders Mngt. = losers

  316. avatar shish says:

this is getting out of hand. I feel like they’re doing everything in their power to get rid of fans at this point. Jaffe is a GREAT commentator and will be missed. this management team makes me want to cry.

  317. avatar Mike P says:

CB just twittered that MSG had a contract in place, it was the Isles who shot it down stating thet Jaffe was “not positive enough”, lol.How can ANYONE be positive about what’s goin on with this organization? Do the Isles expect Jaffe to sing about how great Parentaeu and Yablonski are and how Eaton was a great pickup on D ? LMFAO !!!!! ( shakes head while tearing in laughter )

  318. avatar 1972 means I'm Old says:

    Le nausea.
I found myself watching the meaningless Mets game last night not because of the quality of the game, but the quality of the broadcast.
Likewise, I watch about 90% of Islanders games, even after elimination from playoff contention. One reason: I always get a lot of honest insight from Billy Jaffee.
This move is nauseating. Are the Islanders aiming to be the most hated franchise in the NHL—even by their own fans?

  319. avatar Seth says:

and delete this if you want Chris but if you think charles wang or anyone in management gives a flying you know what about the fans then you need to get your head checked. charles wang could care less about us so STOP PUTTING MONEY INTO THIS TEAM! protest….stop going to games.

  320. avatar TonyD says:

This is nuts. Yeah, they can bring in Potvin and some people will be happy. Potvin is a good color guy, BUT. And its a big but, how do you drop a guy that is clearly a rising star, never harped on the embarrassing stuff on the air (and there were plenty of moments in the past few years)and always pointed out the upside of the franchise’s rebuilding.
    Makes no sense.
On a personal note, I got to meet Billy at the great “Egg” shootout in Bayside. What a good guy, happy to stand around talking hockey, posing for pix. etc.
    A loss for the organization

  321. avatar stevek1510 says:

    disgraceful

  322. avatar MilburyRuinedMyLife says:

    Awful, just absolutely awful.

  323. avatar Matt says:

Why not Chris Kinger? Goring’s all right but… King’s already got that experience as color commentary and he might as well be given a real solid job on the Isles after the radio guys were disbanded.

  324. avatar tom says:

please sell the team you nutcase

  325. avatar Enzo says:

Wang should either sell the team or move it. Put us out of our misery. This guy acts like he is the savior. He is just another in a long line of incompetent NY Islander owners.

  326. avatar Brad says:

This team continues to sucker punch each and every one of us in the face.

  327. avatar Healy says:

To answer why the fans are upset over the loss of “the color comment guy” is because the Islanders suck. Lets be brutally honest: out of date building, questionable management the last 20 years, lack of even a playoff series win since ’93, unknown franchise future, lack of ability to get free agents, PR team that keeps the fans in the dark until prodded, franchise goalie who consistently rides the pine, and I am sure there are others that aren’t coming immediately to mind. We don’t have so much that is good. Jaffe was one of those good things. I’ve heard a lot of other teams’ broadcast, and the Isles were lucky to have what they did. If maybe the list of pains I mentioned above didn’t exist, maybe we wouldn’t care so much. But as someone said, its just another straw among many.

  328. Nothing speaks louder to those in charge than an empty barn! If you are disappointed in the team dont show up to the games!! Lost revenue is the only weapon the fans have at their fingertips. FIRE AWAY!!!

  329. avatar isles72 says:

writing is on the wall , get ready for Goring .

love ya Butchie , but dont think you belong in a broadcast booth

  330. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

I am so frustrated with this team right now. They consistently give me reasons to be pissed off. Sticking with them is becoming more of a chore than a pleasure. Cant we just fast forward to a time where this team is good and makes respectable organizational decisions? Two thumbs down on letting one of the best in the business go. First they cut the radio broadcast which I thought was excellent and now this. What next?

  331. avatar Ari From Long Island says:

Why the hell is it so hard to root for this organization??? Why the hell are we put through bullshit like this every year????? I give up.

  332. avatar fafa says:

    Wow. Not positive enough.

The Islanders are slowly making me a Rangers fan. How’s that for positive.

  333. avatar rob76 says:

This team has done nothing right by their fans this offseason. I thought we might be a few free agent signings(or one HUGE) away from competing for the 8th spot(not the ultimate goal but a step up). This team is nothing more than a joke that will once again be drafting in the top 5. Just this year without Jankowski and without Jaffe – who i was proud to call ours when he did a great job worked the NHL Playoff games

  334. avatar Brooks Simpson says:

Who gets voted off the Island next?

  335. avatar Steve says:

An absolute joke that Jaffe got fired because his opinions were not positive enough.Come on, this has been a bottom feeding team for the last 3 seasons.

  336. avatar Big Dog says:

Really, cause he wasnt a huge a** kisser they bounce him?

Wanger, Snowy why dont you get off the high horse and do for once what us fans need.

    Ridiculous,

Billy good luck and i wish you the best,=

  337. avatar Mook says:

Billy stated the obvious about the team in every game he did.. and that’s what I loved about him. No sugar coating bad play, or lack of something.. and since the Isles are the laughing stock of the NHL, they want a “new broadcast” to speak “positively”? What’s positive, the fact that we signed garbage free agents, have a dump of a building, and are an embarrassment to the rest of the league? Who are they trying to kid? WE ARE the ones watching these games on TV. What’s the difference if there’s nothing “positive” to talk about? Tell us something we don’t already know..

At this point in time in Islanders history.. there isn’t much positive to say at all except the growth of a handful of young talent. What are they going to do next… make us pay a quarter to use an overflowing bathroom stall to piss in?

  338. avatar WM says:

I’ve heard Potvin do Panthers games in the past. If he’s selected to be the new color commentator, we all will miss Jaffe even more.

  339. avatar Dr. Generosity says:

I liked Jaffe’s work, but please, this is not a big deal. We’ve said a tearful goodbye to many REAL greats—Jiggs and Landers, to name but two. Guys like Denny and Butchie deserved to get the Isles’ color job years ago. And if the Isles put one of those legends in the job, they will be a bit harder to fire for “uncritical comment” than Jaffe.

  340. avatar matt says:

327 ur so right i live in prov and have center ice we are really spoiled cause there are some teams that are awful. the pitt guys come to mind

  341. avatar rb says:

I can understand the expressions of misery for Jaffe, but why are people tearing into Butch Goring? I’ve always found him to be a solid commentator whose analysis is spot on.

    Prediction:

2014 Stanley Cup Finals – Islanders versus Oilers, next generation players for two legendary franchises playing in two historic old buildings, Islanders win.

And if Point Blank is still – very hopefully around – people here complain that cap is mismanaged, Garth should be fired and Wang should sell because Islanders won’t repeat.

  342. avatar Pat says:

As a long time fan ( since day 1 ) I had high hopes that this would be the summer the Islanders would start to move in the right direction buy adding maybe 1 or 2 free agents who could actually play the game and speed up the rebuild. What’s happened has become just an absolute joke. First we sign a bunch of low level free agents who will not make this team better at all. Then we get rid of our assistant GM who for all means is the reason we have such good young talent. Now we lose Jaffe who is such a class act and excellent at what he does. He makes watching the games so entertaining. What’s next, how can this team be so completely blind about everything going on around them. I for one will not be spending one dime to see this team until somebody in this organization wake’s up and starts doing things to help this team and not continually doing things that makes us look clueless.

  343. avatar mht says:

Watch Billy Jaffe will line up an analysts position on the CBC doing Hockey Night in Canada.Atrocious decision to terminate him here.He was totally major league.BTW Jaffe was outstanding calling the Montreal-Washington series with Sam Rosen on Versus.

  344. avatar Steve says:

What’s truly going on with the Isles?

  345. avatar Andre says:

Wang is purposely sabotaging the franchise to turn away the fan base to prepare them for a move of the franchise in 2015. No doubt about it.

  346. avatar Vas says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  347. avatar Tony F. says:

Not positive enough? Can’t imagine what would have happened to Eddie Westfall if he was still announcing today. What an embarrassment this organization is. Shame on you Mr. Wang

  348. avatar Brian says:

Watching “Islander Week” on NHL Network last week really hit home with just how low and classless this once model franchise has become.

This is just another in a long line of mind-numbingly stupid decisions this franchise has made in the last two decades.

Wasn’t Positive enough????? How much more positive could he possibly be about this piss bucket of a franchise without coming off as a total joke? The Islanders deserve to be criticized. Jaffe was down right reserved in that department.

Hey Wang, this isn’t communist freaking China where dissenters are lined up behind walls and shot, or sent to work in mines.

Good for Jaffe, Getting fired by the Islanders is probably the best thing that could possibly happen with his career. I’m sure he’ll have suitors calling his agent today.

And you wonder why no one wants to come to this team. It’s not the damn Coliseum. It’s the assholes in our front office.

  349. avatar Barney Stinson says:

    Wow, this is really upsetting.

    Billy was awesome.

  350. avatar Jeff1988 says:

Since the Isles games are also simulcast in Mandarin Chinese, perhaps we can get the Chinese analyst to work with Howie. I would interested in seeing how well Howie’s 3 Stooges references would go over with him.

  351. avatar Kenny says:

dont take this the wrong way but im a die hard islander fan through and through.. but this team is a ******* joke. lets build through the draft (ok say the fans) then lets get rid of one of the key people doing the drafting (janks). Fail. player development (are players are taking strides no????) see ya Trotts. Fail. Jaffe who does his job incredibly well. who needs em. Fail.

i know people who personally have worked with wang and NOT ONE PERSON HAS ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY. this guys a first class joke. i dont care if hes the sole reason were still here. sell the team.

  352. avatar CG says:

I thought he was actually too positive. He was always finding the bright side. Finding the bright side when it comes to the Islanders is a tall order. There probably is more to the story but we will never know because the Islanders don’t communicate anything. I think they just wanted to have a former Islander player to be the color guy. However, the Isles were one of only a few teams that had a announcer that was national broadcaster for the league. Not sure how you let that go.

  353. avatar Tony F. says:

Sorry for the third post. An Islanders ticket agent just called me about a partial plan. I told him no way, I’m done, not with this Mickey Mouse team.

  354. avatar Will says:

You know what I can’t stand? “Homerism.” I loved Billy for not being one, even though he would hand out some Kool-aid every now and again. It’s why I love watching Mets games on television, because the broadcast booth gets on the players. I can’t stand it, and now they want to shove it down our throats.

But seriously, I always heard Billy on the Versus games when the Islanders would play praising the good things they’ve done. But life’s not fair. Good luck Jaffe, you deserve better.

  355. avatar ed says:

Boycott. Enough said. The Jaffe is just the icing on the cake. From the draft to free agency with Kovalchuk, just pure idiocy

  356. avatar hathead68 says:

    I have a headache.

  357. avatar Tim F. says:

“Not positive enough”? Does Wang think that the fans are all so stupid that if they put enough lipstick on the pig, we won’t notice it’s a pig? He doesn’t need a braodcast team; he needs a Minister of Propaganda.

In retrospect, I guess Billy should have called plays like this: “My, look how skillfully Brendan Witt turned that puck over in his own end.” -or- “You can’t fault Gervais on that play; there was a high degree of difficulty wherein he had to actually skate and cause his stick to hit the puck at the same time.”

I have no interest in listening to Pollyanna call hockey games.

  358. avatar Kenny says:

o and another thing. the reason why rangers fans are so misinformed about how good there players and team arent is because SAM AND JOE are the biggest homers out there.. half the time a goal is scored against the rangers it turns into welll “OMG STAAL with an amazing play”.. im sorry but i didnt take any of jaffes analysis as anything but telling it like it is while remaining realistic about the islanders and the youth and talent level of the team currently on the ice. so now what? were going to get some guy whos going to be WANGS puppet and just shove praise down the fans throats at home watching. no thats what the rangers fans get and it translates into them thinking there teams something there not.

  359. This is a stupid decision on the Islanders part. Even if it is true that the Islanders don’t want announcers who are critical of the team, what good does having homers? I can’t even listen to Resch on Devils broadcasts because he always argues that the Devils are cheated even when they aren’t. Jaffe was fantastic. My deepest hope is that Wang is positioning to sell the team.

  360. avatar Pat says:

Somebody needs to tell the Islanders that the fans who watch the games want to listen to Jaffe. Talk about not being able to take any criticism what the hell are they talking about. Jaffe if anything was too positive about what is going on with this team. If this is what the organization is woried about no wonder why we suck. What a joke.

  361. avatar jeff says:

DOes ownership really believe that a color commentator can sway anyone’s opinion of the team? Had Jaffe said that last year’s team was as great as the Dynasty teams, would that have garnered them a single point in the standings? More silliness from a silly management team.

  362. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

PS Ive heard Potvin do commentary. I love and respect the guy for everything he has done for this organization. All star player, awesome person, and an epic part of Islanders history. But he is just not that good at commentary. Billy beats him out by a mile. If they hire him it will be hard to watch this team in multiple modalities…in person AND on TV. Christ, save us all…

  363. avatar Blackwasser says:

I cannot believe the reason. It has to be hearsay or a bad rumor.

If this is true – “he wasn’t positive enough” – then any analyst’s commentary will be highly questioned by the fans as censored or restricted – aka boring. Wow. Many of us have the hockey package and Sirius XM. We’ve heard what is out there in other markets.

If the reason is legitimate – Wang, Snow – you are so pathetically wrong in unloading Jaffe. If you couldn’t afford him or there are contractually irreconcilable differences, fine – but, not positive enough? Who, what, examples please.

And, what do you think – someone who ends up in the box with a script is going to sell more tickets?

We need to revolt with a “Move the Team” campaign. This is exactly as NYIChamp (#330)puts it, “more a chore than a pleasure.”

  364. avatar Hock says:

I heard they’re giving the job to Petrov……..with Kabanov translating

  365. avatar matt says:

What did wang want him to say when the isles were losing 6-0″the isles are really playing good if not for the ref and a bad bounce they would be in front of devils right now”like those were the only games he would say something negative and then he would talk about the bigger picture i dont know how much more positive he could be

  366. avatar eric says:

i bet he ends up with the rags. boy that would just suck.

  367. avatar darius kasparaitis with malakhov says:

I say sell the team to Prokhorov, and move to brooklyn!! lets get the BEST people to run the team !

  368. avatar Nosebleed says:

I think this team enjoys being the laughingstock of the league year in and year out.

  369. avatar Alex says:

Disgraceful. The Islanders finished in 26th place last year. How many good things can you say about the team? I’d take an honest and truthful viewpoint any day of the week over someone just plugging the team for the sake of trying to look good. Jaffe always gave a fair assessment of the team and its players, and he happened to be positive most of the time anyways. Any business who runs their operations this way and cannot be honest with themselves or their fans will not be too successful in the long run. It is a shame to see such decision making by this organization. Good luck to Billy. If I were him, I’d be glad to be moving on if this is truly the reason why he was not re-signed.

  370. avatar Brian G says:

Billy was never negative on the broadcasts or during NHL Live ever…when it came to the Isles

  371. avatar JT says:

This is absurd! Jaffe is a great announcer that has been doing national TV gigs on the side. Why the organization would do this is beyond me, but then again, this offseason has had a few moves that I just don’t understand.

  372. avatar Gary9-19-22 says:

    SHAME ON YOU MR WANG!!!!!!!!

I live and die with this team, and your actions over the last few moths is the icing on the cake.

If nothing else we had the best, and I mean THE BEST, color man in the business go. You talk about loyalty and family…. You don’t walk the walk. Jaffe makes watching the losing bearable.

You have taken a once proud organization and put them at the level of Chiefs in the movie Slap Shot. I’m embarrassed and ashamed!!!!

    Again…. SHAME ON YOU CHARLES!!!!

  373. avatar Peter says:

If the Islanders start winning, it’ll be Jaffe who? Dude might be an okay guy but he’s a commentator…get real. He’ll get another job.

  374. avatar DavidNYC says:

Wow. I always give the team the benefit of the doubt and I am not one who likes to post dramatic reactionary comments here. I think the team made a very bad decision and if their reason was truly because they thought Jaffe was not positive enough, I am speechless. He was a great analyst who made the games watchable when the team often wasn’t. Boo. Bad decision. I would sign a petition in a heartbeat to voice my displeasure to the team. That being said, I will still watch games and follow the team and I guess the Isles know that but I dislike this decision immensely!

  375. avatar Islesfan999 says:

I disagree. I really liked Jaffe. Hopefully we are a good team I guess that matters more but I really will miss Jaffe.

  376. avatar MikeD says:

To anyone saying this is not a big deal, your wrong. This is a big deal for 2 reasons. #1 I don’t want to listen to a damn cheerleader for 3 hours every game. #2 It shows that Wang has no regard for our opinions and is once again spitting in our faces.

Also…I like Billy’s energetic personality, Goring would not be a good replacement.

  377. avatar paulyg says:

wow…i dont know what to say..just plain stupid.

  378. avatar DMac says:

i wish wang would pack his bags, if he doesn’t want to spend money on a good play by play analyst what chance has the team, i want him to sell to somebody with ambition

  379. avatar Ethan K says:

When can the NHL take a team away from an owner..? I’m not watching the Islanders this year. It’s just not any fun anymore.

  380. avatar Healy says:

This is my third and done post on this story. If its true that MSG wanted to bring back a NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED broadcaster and the Islanders didn’t put the stamp on approval due to him being critical, I may finally have come around to those that ask for Wang to be fired. I watch nearly every Islander broadcast when I can’t make it to the Colly. ANY Islander fan could tell Jaffe was pulling for these guys even though he attempted to maintain his integrity and comment fairly. If it was a bad play, it was a bad play. Is the coach going to be fired next for chewing out a player who screws up? Absolutely Mickey Mouse of this team and I am pissed. Firing off another email now.

  381. avatar txdbog says:

they beauty about NY sports commentary is that they ARE critical when its warranted. It’s annoying to listen to every other market talk about how great the franchise is. I don’t want to hear a bunch of homers.

  382. avatar Nosebleed says:

I guess the next guy hired will have to wear a cheerleader outfit, pom poms and pigtails.

Bury this team, bury them once and for all.

  383. avatar Tom 27 says:

Is it me or am I starting to really hate Wang & whoever advises him………….

  384. avatar IslandGirl says:

I said in my post at #225, someone in the NHL needs to look at Wangs’ actions, because it is not the actions of an owner who has the best intentions of his team at heart. It is the actions of an owner who has thw worst intentions at heart, as in, cut costs to the bare bones, making the product so bad, no one attends, then complain there is no interest in the team so he has to move them.

WHY does he have to have this godforsaken stupid Lighthouse? Just build a freakin’ ARENA! Free agents wouldn’t come here because of the Coliseum. The powers that be in Uniondale do not do anything to improve this team. What is their motive? And what was this smoke and mirrors routine with Kovy? Was it all a magic trick? What are they smoking out there?

I don’t know if I can go through this for another season. My second team is the Stars, and now Modano and Turco are gone. Oh happyhappy joyjoy for 2010-11!

  385. avatar Michael Delman says:

I’ve listened to Potvin many times…he’d be better than Butch in my opinion. Hope he speaks his mind….what would they do, fire a legend?

  386. avatar Chris says:

Jaffe will land in a better spot than this mess here on LI. Just ask our former radio play-by-play guy.

  387. avatar beatlebailey says:

that makes sense cause I saw the Jaff with his family at a local diner just a couple of weeks ago…seemed like a relaxed casual weekend morning. He was probably blindsided by it. What a s#itty thing to do. Stuff like this really pisses me off. Its one thing if your the yankees to do this its another if your’re the league’s laughing stock. Maybe Kevin Connelly will be the analyst. I am glad Wang didnt get the lighthouse project thru…Petty SHORT man syndrome….

  388. avatar On Edge says:

Mickey Mouse organization. They make it harder and harder to be a fan.

  389. avatar mrlbem says:

I’m speechless. When did he ever bad mouth the team?

  390. avatar Mike L says:

Jaffe kept telling people to have faith in Tamby. Can you get anymore positive than that? Many fans of other teams thought he was too much of a “homer” especially after the “NOOOOOOO” during Easter Epic part 2. But I liked when he critiqued the team. Jaffe seemed to like the Bruins a lot and the Isles want someone more positive. I guess they’re trying to trade him for Jack Edwards (end sarcasm).

  391. avatar hmpstd tpk says:

Wang you are one of the worst owners in the NHL. You can not detect class or professionalism. I dislike you so much.

  392. avatar Petey Pete says:

Holy crap. This is a disgrace. Not the action, but the reasoning behind it.

Very disgraceful…you think Billy Jaffe is going to have any “positive analysis” about the Isles now when he’s doing national broadcasts?

    This is textbook dysfunctional management.

  393. avatar io20720 says:

wow. I hate listening to other announcers that are homers such that their team can do no wrong. I love honesty and optimism. It’s a real shame. I’m not ready to abandon the logo yet, but I am starting to truly understand why no one wants to work or play for us.

  394. avatar isles14 says:

    that blows. i don’t want a homer.i want an honest person.oh well.

  395. avatar Pete says:

Jack #362, I get the feeling that you’re absolutley correct. If this is indeed the case, it may not necessarily be a bad thing as long as the team stays in the NY Metropolitan area.

  396. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Goring or Povin (great guys) would be a major step down. What I think is funny is Isles management thinks we are not smart enough to see what is going on on and off ice. Is Howie & the new guy going to start telling us the team won the game when really the Flyers won 8-0? Is that the kind of positive Wang wants for us to be lied to? Stay classy Long Island…..

  397. avatar Lucas says:

I sent a long email to customer service expressing my discontent. I reccommend that we all take a moment to do that. There’s not much else we can do.

  398. avatar anthony c says:

boo hoo the isles can’t take criticism. what a joke. Guy gets fired cause he wasn’t talking positive about the team. Can’t really talk positive about a team that has a bunch of clowns running the front office, and the on ice product is getting waxed on a daily basis. Post #361 On Edge you said it best “Mickey Mouse organization. They make it harder and harder to be a fan”.

  399. avatar Danbury Islanders Fan says:

I really don’t care about the broadcast team of the Islanders. Let’s worry about the team on the ice instead please, or where they are going be playing. By the way the Islanders don’t pay the TV broadcasters MSG does, so how is this a cost cutting move

  400. avatar Seth says:

don’t know if you are reading this Billy but I think I can speak for all Islander fans when I say we are going to really miss you and what you brought to the game. you are one of the best in the business and i wish you good luck.

  401. avatar Gus says:

Is it at all possible that they might bring in someone new and fresh – not Butchie or Dennis?? What kind of reaction was there 4 years ago when Billy Jaffe was hired (we never heard of him – came from doing Atlanta games). yes, we have been spoiled by one of the best in the biz – so let’s see if the Isles have a good surprise or go with the convential former Isle player — i would prefer Clark Gillies over the aforementioned duo.

  402. avatar Lafars says:

You guys are missing the point of all this. Wang was mad so many people were not renewing their season tickets he had the brilliant idea to make the telecast unwatchable and therefore force the fans to come back to the Coliseum to watch games instead. Now that is thinking outside the proverbial box.

  403. avatar Jersey Steve says:

I really liked Jaffe (and I still like Howie) and wish him nothing but the best. This was a stupid move by the team regardless whether they bring in a former player or not. I still prefer Jaffe.

I honestly have no idea what direction this team is going. They are letting go of people left and right, this is the year of the enforcer like last year was the year of the goalie, Snow hasn’t done anything to improve on last year’s roster, a new arena is still just vapor, and the team’s coverage (excluding this page) is pathetic. I’m not giving up on the team but it sure is disheartening.

  404. avatar Dorfer says:

Wow, I always felt Jaffe went too easy on the Isles during games. There is nothing worse than a see-no-evil-speak-no-evil sports commentator.

It’s why Gary, Keith and Ron are the best in sports.

  405. avatar Tony says:

You know, I gave the Islanders a deadline of 2012 to be a decent playoff team or I’m out, and this just reinforces that stance… enough is enough, I can’t watch this team make bad decision after bad decision, year after year. Even when things are looking better, there are still just these ridiculous moves that make me ashamed to be an Islanders fan.

  406. avatar EdTurner says:

Forget moving to KC. Move the team to the KHL! They are running the team like they are already there.

  407. avatar UIF says:

    Dear Islanders,

The fans don’t want NESN-style homers on the broadcast team. It’s embarrassing when that kind of commentary gets national exposure via Center Ice. We have enough to be embarrassed about as it is. Thinking that fans will just shut up or not notice they cheer for an inferior team if only you can put a “positive spin” on a 6-1 loss is insulting.

    Regards,

    A fan

  408. avatar Joe says:

Wow, another bush league move. I wanted toughness and got it. They did absolutely nothing else tho.

  409. avatar Eric Cup says:

    A TOTAL DISGRACE! DISGUSTING!

  410. avatar David Volek says:

There is no question that Jaffe is one of the best broadcasters in the league. I am baffled at the notion that he was not “positive enough”, but I am not surprised. There has to be more than what meets the eye……..a.k.a I dont buy it.

When Joe Michelletti switched to the Rangers broadcast, and the isles got Jaffe, it was like night and day. I couldnt believe how lopsided the two guys were, and how the isles got the WAY better of the two.

I think whats going on, is that unless someone is ready to be the “islanders monkey” Wang doesnt want them. As long as its an ex player that takes the role i’ll be happy. The less Howie Rose speaks, the happier I am………but isnt this just typical Islander news?

Anyone remember Jiggs and Eddie……..ahhhh those were the days……..

  411. avatar Rich says:

Un-Freaking Believable. Jaffe was one of the “free agents” that SHOULD HAVE STAYED. He was a pleasure to watch, knew the game of hockey and brought a lot of class to the broadcasts. I cannot beleive that the Isles would let him go. Another BAD move by the Isles. Is Milbury still in charge?

  412. avatar Danny from Section 306 says:

I e-mailed this to Tim Beach of the Islanders organization: The decision to relieve Billy Jaffe of his duties because he is not “positive enough” as an announcer is an absolute joke. For one, there is no reason as to why why he should not openly and constructively criticize a team that deserved to be critiqued. This is a developing team with up-and-down youth; of course there will be negative things to acknowledge. By doing so, this organization is essentially promoting bias in its media coverage. Very simply put, the Islanders wants and are attempting to create biased coverage of themselves. That isembarrassing to me as a fan and it should be embarrassing to each and every individual that is a part of media relations. Billy Jaffe is superb at what he does, and is always willing to give 150% for this team. There is a reason that he worked on both Versus and NBC – because he is great. Relieving him is an abomination, and the reasoning behind it is even worse.

  413. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Times/Days like this, I hate this team.
    There, I said it.
Too bad about Jaffe. I really enjoyed his commentary a lot. Bummer. Bummer.

  414. avatar Nyles says:

sell – the – team! sell – the – team! sell – the – team!

  415. avatar Adam B says:

Everyone check out the Islanders official site…there’s a picture of Roli…IN HIS EDMONTON OILERS JERSEY!!! What the hell is wrong with his organization?!

  416. avatar jdisles says:

    i am done

  417. Can Jiggs come back and get rid of the real guy that doesnt belong?

  418. avatar Quagmire says:

It is to the point now where the organization just absolutely does not seem to care about how they are perceived in the media or, more iportantly, by their own fans. They just don’t care and are going to do whatever they want (really, whatever “he” wants). They don’t rehire Jankowski, or Trottier, not a word to the fans on why, how or what. They leave diehard fans hanging all through a holiday weeked on the false news that they were legitimately in on Kovalchuk. They sign bottom rung free agents to fill the roster. The lighthouse blackout I won’t wven go into.

All they are doing is slowly and steadily eroding away whatever fan base is left. Nothing suprises me from them anymore, and the sad part is that I am no longer suprised or even bothered by it – like many others, I just don’t care any more either.

  419. avatar Doubting Thomas says:

WHERE DID THE “WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR CHARLES” CHOIR MEMBERS GO?

  420. avatar Pete M says:

I was a bit bummed when Eddie and Jiggs left, and then when Joe Michalini (sp) was let go but I got over it. I’ll get over this too. People are making way too much out of this.

  421. avatar Madchef says:

I am sorry that Jaffe is gone but hionestly does it matter that much. IF you guys can sit through broadcasts of the NFL on ESPN and MLB on YES, and NBA on TNT than I am sure whoever the isles bring in will be fine. What they should do is put more mics on at field or rink level to catch the sounds of the game so we can hear less of these self loathing announcers. I honestly barely listen to broadcasts for that fact. Does everything the Isles do have to be the worst thing that ever happened? Its nice to see so many care but having Potvin(possibly) back at the coliseum not a cool thing? Maybe I am crazy but its not the end of the world. Jaffe will be somewhere else and if you love him so much I am sure you can watch him do isles commentary on Versus the one or two games we actually get on that network

  422. avatar sol says:

    Watch the games on MUTE

  423. avatar JD says:

Just another day in the crazy world known as Islander Country. Good luck and Best Wishes to Billy Jaffe. You deserve to work for a real NHL team and be treated with respect. I guess Wang wants to have the same objectivity in the Islander TV Booth as the Yankees have in their Radio Booth.

  424. avatar Schultz39 says:

This is starting to feel and sound like the movie “Major League”. Now the team just needs to go out there and win….or bring on the goons!

  425. avatar bobice says:

oh heaven forbid jaffe critizes the 26th and dead last islaners 4 the past 2 seasons. this is move that just gets me very angry

  426. avatar matt says:

adam b they have one with PA whoever in his ranger jersey lol

  427. avatar mike from brightwaters says:

once again, what friggin joke, what do they want, a bias john sterling, he is so annoying, but it works when your team wins 90 percent of the time. doesnt work when your team hasnt come close to winning for 25 years!

  428. avatar Donna says:

Not positive enough??? Jaffe?? are they kidding, he was nothing but positive, I learned alot about hockey from his commentary and I liked the rapport he had with Howie. I keep hearing that Crazy Train song in my head. . .oh yeah who is our backup goalie this year???

  429. avatar mtrico says:

This is one of the worst decisions in the recent history of this franchise. Jaffe was the only thing that made Islanders broadcast worth watching. Simply a brutal decision. Good luck Billy, you will be missed!

  430. avatar Isle Be Damned says:

    This organization is so dumb.

WE ARE NEW YORK FANS. WE DON’T WANT OVERLY POSITIVE HOMERISM. My god, NY Islanders. Not positive enough? The Homer announcer thing works great in Kansas City. not in NEW YORK.

  431. avatar Bart says:

Wow how do they keep surprising us? No matter what we go through this team always manages to make it worse! I was always thankful for Wang, but not anymore. BJ is a top rate announcer and helped make watching this minor league team tolerable!

  432. avatar Chris TMC says:

*IF* it is true that MSG Network had a multi-year contract ready for Billy Jaffe and it was the Islanders who didnt let him sign it, then they are absolutely clueless regarding the role of a color guy. He isnt there for YOU to like he is there for US. WE are the ones who watch.

As far as Potvin goes, I do not think he is very good… he would be a step down from Jaffe, a role in a dynasty does not change that.

  433. avatar ralph says:

Billy was the lighthouse for the islander storm. He kept dull games interesting, imagine what he could do if they were winning. This ranks in the same category with trading Luongo. Is Millbury back?

  434. avatar Scott says:

Seriously? I don’t like the Devils’ announcers because they’re not just positive, but Kool-Aid drinkers. I’d swear Chico has a major mancrush on Brodeur. He’s like some annoying Seinfeld character. I want backbone. I want announcers with their own thoughts. Jaffe too positive? Is Michelletti? He’s definitely not too positive – I value his observations and opinions. I don’t want sycophants trying to tell me what to think. It’s back to Owie Rose. I’ll remember the H when he stops forgetting the letter G….as in “he shoots it the LENTH of the ice” and “back to even STRENTH.”

  435. avatar Eric says:

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jaffe 3-4 times. We went to the same gym and live close to one another. The guy is very nice and a class act. He’s also very honest as we discussed several Islanders issues and he would answer all my questions(there were a lot) especially about the younger players. Honestly, I thought Jaffe was extremely optimistic on the air as many announcers are. In person he was more of a straight shooter. The last time we spoke was 4 days before the playoffs started. We discussed the different playoff teams, the Islanders young players, and more. He gave it to me straight…He said the Islanders need more toughness and more size, especially at center. He said he thought Martin should make the team out of camp. Last spring as we awaited who the Islanders would take first overall, I said to him “it has to be Tavares.” He told me that he does not think Tavares is that good and when I mentioned Danny Heatley he said he did not think he would be as good. He gave it to me straight whether he is right or wrong regardles. The last time we spoke he said that hes concerned about the arena. I did not even bring the arena up to him the last time we spoke. The guy is an honest, straight forward, class act. I told him in April that the Islanders would be making a BIG mistake if they did not bring him back. He thanked me graciously for my compliment and told me “its a business, you know that.” but did state that “everything will work out” so I am sure he thought he would be back. The first time we met, he said he hopes to be with the islanders and long Island for a long time. When the Islanders get a new arena, I hope they bring him back. His wife is from this area, however by then I am sure he will be even bigger than he is now. This guy is the best up and coming color guy in the sport. If hockey was on espn, he could definitely be the air apparent to Barry Melrose. He has the personality, the knowledge, and the spark. Hes friendly, thats would people like. I liked Michelleti and was upset the ranger$ scooped him up, but I realized a year later that Jaffe was better. I really thought howie and billy could be the next Jiggs and Eddie when the rebuild was complete, that they could be together for 15-20 years. The Islanders front office is a JOKE! They will regret this decision for 20 years when Jaffe is huge! I wish him the very best. Its a real shame that a few people in the Islanders management do not appreciate him. One team in the nhl just got lucky and got them selves a great analyst.

  436. avatar thepolishprince says:

He was offered a deal and the ISLES turned it down? Not POSITIVE enough? Jesus. The management of this team sucks.Billy was the man. I wish him the absolute best of luck. Guess we’ll have a total homer, jocksniff of a color guy now.

  437. avatar Peter says:

This is an absolute joke. I’m going to leave it at that so I don’t lose my commenting ability over the stream of incredible profanity that would come forth if I continued. Disgusting.

  438. avatar Jaymz27 says:

If they bring Rob Carlin back then they were not watching the telecasts last year because he is brutal!!!! Sad to see Jaffe go. He won’t be out of work long. Chris, what is going on with this organization?

  439. avatar mitchRVC says:

Is it too late to change alligences? I can handle losing but this mickey mouse way of management has handled everything poorly, from their media blackout, to their fear of constructive criticism, to chasing away personeel who have excelled in other venues simply because they spoke their minds. Some one save this team from Wang. Wilpon, Milstein, Spano, British Petroleum. The coliseum rebuild will mean nothing if they cannot regain the trust of players or personell. The Pirates have a beautiful stadium as dothe Mets. FA’s arent going to lign up there without extra incentive. Same for the Knicks, same for Islanders.

  440. avatar Billy-no-not-Jaffe says:

Not that Jaffe is irreplacable or the 2nd coming of Foster Hewitt………..but the fans liked him for the most part. Why does this organization consistantly miss what the customer likes and wants? Why doo they zig when they should zag? Plain clumsy or just very willful? No more criticism AT ALL, even if crap play or stupid management decisions stare you in the face, mostly on the TV screen or at the game.
Every offseason is bizarro world on LI.

  441. avatar Brother Rat says:

You gotta be kidding me. Is Wang now taking his management cues from the Dolans?! Horrendous. Another misstep. I’m mildly surprised these jokers will at least be filling the role, rather than giving it to Howie and Garth to absorb.

  442. avatar Mario says:

Sad part about this is come Oct. 9th I will be wearing the orange and blue and forgetting about everything. But for now this sucks. Living in CT and going to only 5-10 games a year Billy was my voice now its going to change. Only way to make it better is if Butchie takes over.

  443. avatar Terry 99 says:

Good luck Billy you got screwed. This little organization that couldn’t has officially become a complete joke. On and off the ice. I am beside myself with disbelief. I guess if his salary counted toward the cap they’d keep him. There’s something to be said for honest consistent coverage. Not to this management group. All yes men line up at the door..the job could be yours…sickening.

  444. avatar Peter says:

Here is the email I just wrote to the Islanders. CB, do you have a public email address that I can write to Billy to thank him for his years of quality service to the organization?

“After reading the news at Islanders Point Blank, I had to write to register my absolute disgust at the decision not to bring back one of the best hockey announcers in the game today. In two seasons of hockey that was hard to watch at times, the quality Mr. Jaffe brought to the Islanders telecast kept me tuning in. To hear that the decision was made because he wasn’t positive enough is laughable. I’m often in the minority defending a move made by the team, and have been a staunch supporter of The Lighthouse Project. No more. Ultimately, the buck stops with Charles Wang, and I will not support him any longer after this decision.

Shame on you, Islanders. If the term “Mickey Mouse Organization” didn’t exist, it would have to be invented to describe the Islanders.”

  445. avatar mfio says:

I’m starting to wonder if anyone at the islanders ever watches this team play…

Although I like butch i dont think he was nearly as positive as jaffe. I might have to watch the games on mute next year. Maybe bring in kinger.

  446. avatar Kevin says:

Absolute bs. Mickey Mouse through and through.

All the best to Billy. At least he has the chance to move on to a professional organization now.

I’m going to have to watch the road calls if Goring is calling an entire game.

  447. avatar mike from brightwaters says:

looks like its time to break out the paper bag over the head again

  448. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

I doubt it will help, but I sent a very even-tempered email to the Isles expressing my disappointment and asking them to bring Jaffe back.

I suggest everyone else send one as well, maybe they’ll yield to some fan pressure.

  449. avatar Honnold says:

BEYOND DISGRACEFUL. ONE OF THE WORST MOVES THESE JOKERS HAVE EVER MADE. As much as we love Potvin and Goring, I’ve heard their analysis and they are hard to listen to. The Isles nation is not so stupid that we will tolerate a Dan Dierdorf-quality commentator. So short sighted. So unbelievably cynical. They think we’re idiots.

  450. avatar Tim says:

Billy was the only thing getting me through some of those games

  451. avatar Anthony Yampol says:

Pathetic move by the Isles. I can see it now for whoever replaces him.

“And the Rangers score to make it 8-1 here with 52.1 seconds left in the 3rd. Boy that goal Jurcina got in the 1st period sure was nice. Did you see how his dump-in deflected off a Ranger and right into the net? Had to be planned, what a genius play, by a genius team. Great coaching, too. Overall, this whole organization is just swell! The Isles are only 18 points out of 8th place, so this wasn’t a must win.”

  452. avatar Al L says:

#236! You were referring to AL L #224,not 223,evidently lacking an understanding the workings of representative Broadcast hiring, firing, contract renewal and non-renewal. While it is true the Network pays the salary and technically executes the hiring, firing, renewal and non-renewal of Broadcast people, the ultimate decision in all cases is in the hands of the representative Organizations.
Sure enough it was just reported such was the case with Billy Jaffe. MSG had a new deal ready to go only to have the Isles reject it and Billy. According to reports,Billy’s style of honesty and objectivity was not what this Organization was looking for! Disgrace after disgrace is becoming abit too much to bear for this lifelong Islanders fan. Being a Mets fan also, this ownership and regime has taken on the same miserable personality as the M.Donald Grant dark ages era, reeking from the stench of fan detachment, faceless arrogance and deceit!! A cloud of hopelessness, air of mistrust and quesy feeling of nausea has found its way into my being and consciousness. That is something I will no longer tolerate!

  453. avatar IslanderNation says:

I don’t want someone who’s positive 100% of the time. Jaffe was positive, and realistic, about the Isles rebuilding plan and he was on board to stay with it. He supported the rebuild and didn’t say too many negative things throughout the years but kept it honest.

I can deal with not signing many FA’s but this, along with the Jankowski news, has really made this a very bad offseason for the Isles.

  454. avatar Peter says:

If anyone’s interested, I’ve created a Facebook page

    http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf#!/group.php?gid=140226229339793

  455. avatar Never witnessed a Cup says:

This really pi55es me the ef off! I am beginning to hate my favorite team…Jaffe was great and he was always positive and truthful at the same time…This totally sucks andf Im tired of this garbage…What kind of coverage do Isles fans deserve then???What does wang want???Kiss the a55 reporting???

  456. avatar marty says:

Jaffe you were the best. Screw the Isles

  457. avatar Mike says:

Wow. I always thought Jaffe was very honest and objective AND painted the Islanders in a positive light. I HATE watching games where the announcers are just blind cheerleaders for the team. If the team was successful, these odd moves (Jankowski, Trottier, Jaffe) would be barely worth mentioning. When the team has not been close to decent in a decade it makes the management team look incompetent. Perhaps the Isles will want to fire me as a fan since I am not being positive.

  458. avatar SCLI says:

What ever happened to objectiveness in reporting????? NO wonder this has become a MICKEY MOUSE organization! Cant wait to hear the spin the 1st time the Isles get drubbed 7-0 Next season. It should be quite entertaining. And quite a Fantasy!!!!

  459. avatar Never witnessed a Cup says:

I sitting here yelling the f-word and smashing my desk because Im so mad…If what Botta says is true “that Jaff was too negative”, I just want to crawl up in a ball and hide…To say Im irate is an understatement…WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  460. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Newsday’s article mentions nothing of why the Jaffe got canned. Katie’s writing is so vanilla and boring. It’s the same info you can get anywhere else. Where is the writing with some meat in it or some integrity (or at least the truth)? They can try to put blinders on us but give us more credit and stop insulting us. We know the team isn’t very good and isn’t run properly. Anyone with half a brain can see that. You can spray perfume on a pile of crap, but its still going to smell like a pile of crap.

  461. avatar matt says:

and the isles lose 8-0 but not with a lack of effort a bounce here or here and better refs they would of pulled this one out. great coaching the whole way through the isles put together a game plan and followed it to a t.

  462. avatar jmo16 says:

Does that mean JMicheletti is now the new benchmark for color commentary? He’ll be the first person on record to die from Kool-Aid overdose. I literally want to puke if I have to listen to him. I wish they’d just kept mum on this one, like so many other topics & decisions. How about a Ricky update, Garth? Has he suited up in the past 9 months? Crap, why don’t they just bring Yashin back to babysit Petrov & teach him broken english? We’re already paying him(they’ll save $$ on Rosetta Stone CDs) Would bet my right pinky toe he outscores most of the team. Based on the unpredictability of this team, it doesn’t seem all that far fetched. Good luck Billy. They don’t deserve you.

  463. avatar jimisles says:

I heard this may be the case yesterday. Absolutely a pure stupid move by the Islanders. The circus continues!!!!!!!

  464. avatar Michael says:

Charles PLEASE SELL you are a MESS!

  465. avatar IslesPassion21 says:

Ohh, lets not forget about Logan being fired last year and they hired Katy Strang?!?!?!?!No offense to her but you have to be kidding me!!!She is no doing a good job because shes not allowed to and shes not a hockey person…

Im finally on the bash wang wagon

  466. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

i like jaffe, I guess isles just find things wrong with everyone> Not positve enough? what is he suppose to say. Great loss, you tried hard though.

But if Butchie or Potvin are his replacement that is great.

Its Howie Rose that should be sent packing.

  467. avatar miketee says:

What a joke. I guess part of the “rebuild” must include building a new fan base — a bunch of gullible, rose colored glass wearing, kool-aid drinkers.

As a Yankee fan, I hate listening to John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman because their unnending bright-eyed, bushy tailed positivity is enough to make me nauseous.

We finally get a analyst with some insight and objectivity and he’s gone because Chucky Wang just won’t allow any of that.

Maybe Doug Weight can act as analyst and they can pad his salary for that job as well so that they can get closer to the salary floor.

If you’re an Islander fan, you can never have a good day because there is always a bad day on the horizon.

  468. avatar IslesNation says:

Wouldn’t expect anything less from this franchise

  469. avatar admin says:

Post updated with coverage from Neil Best of Newsday, who confirms Islanders wanted Jaffe out.

  470. avatar IslesFanInProvidence says:

Simply put I can’t stand this team anymore…it’s a damn joke. I am constantly trying to stick up for this team to my friends, co-workers, and just people in general and theres really nothing left to defend. It’s not necessarily this most recent piss poor action by the team or the last one or the one before that but the culmination of all this non-sense is simply tiring.

I give up. I will still be a fan, but a very dormant one. I might go to one game around the holidays with my family and try to get free tickets from someone I know or use my 10 yr old college ID. But that’s about it.

I’m just going to stop now because I could probably rant for a long time about this.

Okay, I got that out of my system. Good luck to Billy in his future endeavors!

    Let’s Go Avs…

  471. avatar James says:

It really makes you wonder just whom within the organization claims to have the pulse of the fan base.

  472. avatar ars9x says:

yikes. wtf? I will miss Billy greatly. another hit to the fanbase. This has been a hard off-season so far.

  473. avatar Jersey Steve says:

Maybe Snow will draft a color commentator in next year’s draft.

  474. avatar bossy22 says:

Imagine….critizing the Isles. Hard to believe anyone can find anything negative to say about this team. I mean, they have run the organization like professionals and every other owner in the NHL I’m sure are envious. NOT!!!! Get a clue Wang. You run the team like a circus show and expect everyone to bow at you feet or kiss you butt. Just sell the team to someone who has a clue

  475. avatar Brian G says:

Wang is hoping to make it a non paying position and no one can have any opinion about anything

  476. avatar Frans Dish says:

really? Bruno Gervais continues to have a job with the Islanders but, Jaffe gets the boot. We can’t even get the commentator aspect of the game right sheesh.

  477. avatar dan says:

I liked the jafman but it will be cool to get potvin into the organization in some role. If potvin does the studio gig and goring takes over jaffy’s spot (and reverse too) i will be fine.

  478. avatar raul17 says:

You know, you guys are really making it difficult to defend this franchise!! You gotten rid of CB. You dumped Kinger and the radio crew. Now, Billy?! Billy was a cheerleader without sounding like a homer! When a goal is scored, he’ll explain to us why the play worked or show what went wrong. If that’s being negative….

I am glad that I cut CableVision!! I was worried that I will cave in and re-new, but this has made easier for me!! With the Devils, Knicks and Rangers, I would have search for the game!!

  479. avatar Honnold says:

Garth, stand up, be a man, and make this right. You were a stand up goal-tender. Now that you’re wearing a suit, why are you outsmarting yourself by alienating your fanbase? No amount of spin or Friday-night-press-dump propaganda can sweep this under the rug. This is downright Milbury-esque.

  480. avatar vann89 says:

It is so hard to love this team sometimes. Just when you think the Isles are on their way to respectability, they do this. I think they like pissing off their fans.

  481. avatar Tim says:

Horrendous move. Jaffe was terrific and we’ll miss him.

  482. avatar Scott says:

This is the best news since the Islanders announced no more Fisherman jerseys. He was awful people!!!I put the games on mute because he bothered me so much with his obvious observations. He was never a good hockey player and it showed because he had no intelligence of the game. Tonight we celebrate!!!Thanks Wang! Now go build an arena in Queens. Oh, we’re still not going to score enough goals to make the playoffs, but it’s getting closer.

  483. avatar Bob says:

I don’t understand it. Even worse is that since the Isles haven’t seemed to acknowledge it (and probably won’t), we will most likely never know why. Billy is the man for color, when him and Jiggs would team up every once in awhile it made for the best broadcasting pair to hear.

  484. avatar IslandGirl says:

    Not positive enough.

Cannot get that outta my head. So what they’re saying is, don’t believe your lyin’ eyes. Don’t believe the team sucks on the ice right in front of your eyes, listen to the color guy telling you the team is fantastic!

Getting beat like a rented mule? Don’t worry! The color guy says everything is coming up roses and the goalie DID make 16 saves, after all!

WE don’t want homers like Micheletti (he has become excruciatingly painful to listen to) or Chico – (that guy needs effin therapy-what will he do if “Marty” retires?) Jaffe was the perfect guy. But I guess Wang Chung wants to brainwash us into thinking the Blackhawks are skating around down there.

Is Snow our backup goalie? Is DP retired? Are they EVER going to tell us ANYTHING?

I’m not investing another penny into this team. That’s ALL they understand. But y’know, they’ll use THAT to move them. *don’t know whether to laugh or cry*

  485. avatar symbol says:

how about a wang must go chat at the home opener. and for the people who say if it was not for wang this team would be gone. please stop it with that crap.how about it guys you it.

  486. avatar Russel Ginart says:

I feel very bad for BJ, he did not desrve this, like you CB I must have missed those telecats where he was NOT positive enough. Lets suppose as you have stated that Potvin or Goring get the color job along Howie, what if THEY are NOT positive enough? Will they get dismissed too? From seeing some of the FLA games over the past years, Potvin is not a fluff kind of color guy. He can ruffle a few feathers.

  487. avatar Rish31 says:

Ridiculus! As a lifelong fan, and someone who defends the moves of this organization to fans of legitimate pro franchises, this one is indefensible. It dos not matter who the replacement is, this move was “bush league”…and even that’s an insult to bush leagues.

  488. avatar Barbara says:

I guess if Billy had been “more positive” the team would have been better? Mr. Wang has never allowed any free thinking…YES, Mr Wang, seems to be the only discussion he allows…he even got rid of his son-in-law so what do you expect. Sell the team, build a new arena, not a new, “MEGA city”get a new owner…we can’t take any more!

  489. avatar IslesPassion21 says:

Almost 500 posts and 99.9% for Jaffe…WTF is wrong with this org? I guess the team isnt for the fans its for Wangs amusement

  490. avatar symbol says:

this will go on untill us fans not show up. but there are psople that still buy tixxs but complain about this team.people who buy season tixxs are people who dont now any better or have money to burn. there is no one that can tell me that they but season tixxs becuse its Entertanement.
