MATT MOULSON ARBITRATION HEARING SET
Exclusive: Scheduled for Tuesday, July 27 at 9:00 am

by admin on July 12th, 2010 at 11:02 am

11:00 am: Look for the Islanders to try hard to settle with Moulson in these next two weeks. Moulson scored 30 goals in 2009-10, six more than John Tavares, 11 more than anyone else on the team. Scott Gordon and Garth Snow are on record saying Moulson is for real – not a one-season wonder. The franchise used him extensively with marketing materials, personal appearances and even a media tour as recently as last month. Comments on Matt Moulson.

  1. avatar Andy says:

Hey, looks like we found a good one. Pay him accordingly.

  2. avatar Matt says:

How much would youy pay him CB? I believe a 3 year deal for 2 to 3 million a year is fair for both sides.

  3. avatar Jon says:

I hope they get this done. Arbitration is never good. People tend to leave with their feelings hurt. Pay him what he deserves!

  4. avatar Brian says:

Sign him. A few mill a year plus unlimited patchouli should make him happy.

  5. avatar RAMen says:

Please don’t Salo this man. Get’er done.

  6. avatar Devon says:

    3/10. No more.

  7. avatar orngfan says:

hopefully this gets taken care of quickly and painlessly.. both foreign terms to islander fans..

  8. avatar Russel Ginart says:

RAMen, you brought back memories (nightmares) with the word Salo.
Pay Moulson accordingly, 2 to 3 mill @ year seems fair: 3 year deal.

  9. avatar JP91 says:

I’d like to see a 4-year, #12 million deal or something in that range. I think that is fair for both sides and keeps Moulson here for a while to grow with the nucleus. Get it done, Garth!

    LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!!!

  10. avatar big dally mac says:

    5 years 12 million front load…
4, 4, 3, 0.5, 0.5 no movement clause in the first two years…do it up. (2.4 cap hit)

  11. avatar Rob (in Pgh) says:

I’ve liked everything about Moulson since he joined the Isles. I hadn’t heard of him until training camp last year but he immediately seemed like such a great guy.
(I had a somewhat meaningless hope that the Isles would sign Manny Malhotra to play with Matt Moulson and Matt Martin on a line but it was all about the M&Ms and none about the hockey.)

  12. avatar beatlebailey says:

give him a trent hunter type deal…4 yrs 8mil.

  13. avatar Lorne says:

I feel they should give him a one year deal and if he is for real again in
2010-2011, then a long term extension is warranted.

  14. avatar Brian says:

I’d really like to see them go just one year with him before giving him any kind of extension. Make him prove last year wasn’t a fluke. If he proves next year that he is for real, give him his multi-year extension.

  15. avatar JT says:

Lock him up. He has great chemistry with Tavares. He could have had 35+ if it wasn’t for a few great saves, bad bounces. We need more guys like him who go to the net and get those goals.

  16. avatar thepolishprince says:

I’m with Brian on the one year “show me” contract. However since Garth and Gordon have both gone on the record as saying last year wasn’t just a fluke I expect some sort of multiyear deal to be worked out. From my amateurish view of things Matt Moulson is a hands only guy. Let’s not go crazy with dollars or term. something fair for both sides should be douable without any hurt feelings.

  17. avatar potvinrocks says:

So you want to sit down and explain all the pitfalls a player has & why you want to sign him so bad.

  18. avatar Orange&Blue says:

They better sign him. Enough talking from Mr. Snow. How about backing it up for a change. Just like the free agents we are promised each summer and never seem to get. Plenty of able players out there. Go sign them. How can hard can it be to sell one of the best places to live in the U.S, near NYC, and you have John Tavares on your roster. Come on! Enough with the we play in a dump arena excuses. Improve the team.

  19. avatar bob l says:

    3 years, 2M, 2.75M, and 3.5M cap hit 2.75
is probably where he ends up around

CB, if this reaches the arb, they can only issue a 1 year deal correct??, and then he goes UFA?

  20. avatar JayK says:

“Matt, we have a problem. We’re way under the salary cap floor. So…we’ve decided to give it all to you! You’re now one of the highest paid players in the sport! Congratulations!”

  21. avatar fred says:

I hope if they can’t wrap up something that he gets fair value and then if he’s ripping it up next year get talks going on a 3 – 4 year extension.

  22. avatar jeff says:

Isn’t this the same owner who gave Trent Hunter $2M a year? Moulson looks like the real deal, but he still only did it once. I’d give him an incentive deal which would pay him $3M if he reaches 30 goals again.

  23. avatar Rob (in Pgh) says:

CB, or someone who knows the details of the CBA… he is 26 years old. What would his RFA/UFA status be after a 1 year deal? How long/short could he be signed and still be an RFA at the end of the contract?

  24. avatar tj says:

MM made 575K last season, he is not worth 2-3 million. He deserves 1.25-1.75 max for a year or two, let him prove he’s not a one hit wonder.

  25. avatar Mike says:

I hope we reach a multi year agreement to the tune of 5 years, $10-$15M as I would hate to lose him to free agency next year because he signed a one year arbitration deal.

  26. avatar Madchef says:

give him 12 million for 4 years.A One year contract is a good idea if he cant repeat a similar perfomance. However, if this guy knocks in 30 again this year he will want more at the end next year and then someone else will swoop in and take him as a FA. I don’t see how you can take a chance knowing how great we are with signing goal scorers you have to lock him up!

  27. avatar streit02 says:

Dont give him more than 2 years. Doesnt matter what we pay him in that span because the cap will not be an issue. Hes only played one season. Hes 26 years old already he still needs to prove himself. Jonathan Cheechoo once scored over 50 goals and now has difficutly reaching double digits. A longer term deal could hurt in the long run. If hes still putting up #’s after 2 yrs then you can sign him again for slightly more than what we’d originally be paying him. He wont want to go anywhere else.

  28. avatar Rob (in Pgh) says:

Yes, I just looked it up. 27 is the magic number. If his contract expires and he is 27 or older (as he will be next year) then he will be a UFA. Given that, I hope they lock him up for several years.

  29. avatar akeem says:

I agree he’s for real, but he shouldn’t get paid like a 30 goal scorer after only one season. I think it’s in Moulson’s best interests to take a contract of 4 or 5 years at around 2 million per – it gives him security, and rewards him for his successful season.

  30. avatar Jzimm says:

I don’t see a Salo situation. That was an interesting situation, and an example of both sides have substantial shortcomings and egos that they couldn’t back up.

Salo was a soft personality, I don’t get the same idea from Moulson. I hope that this deal gets done, besides, the Islanders have to approach the cap floor.

  31. avatar Scott S. from Long Beach says:

If you do a one-year deal, and he puts up as good or better numbers, then you’re going to wind up paying a lot more for him if you want to do something long-term. Also, would he become a UFA after next year if you signed for 1?

Trent Hunter deal is perfect, maybe a tick more due to his numbers. 2.1 or 2.2/year for 4 years. Should be ecstatic with that offer.

  32. avatar jimisles says:

This is what baffles me……. Our only 30 goal scorer and the Islanders were not capable of signing him?????

Ah who knows, I’m no hockey GM…..lol.

  33. avatar Chris TMC says:

IMO Matt will almost undoubtedly get awarded more than 2M in arbitration. I am confident the Isles will work it all out with him… this kid is an absolute feather in Snows cap as far as excellent pickups go. Plus, who doesnt love this kid?

  34. avatar 25yearfan says:

    Lock him up until 30.

    $2.5 million/year x 4 years = nice round $10 million. A hair over Hunter, but more upside on production….

  35. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

He should get 1.2 a year nothing more.

  36. avatar Mike says:

I like Moulson a lot, but I think we should do 3 years @ 2 mill. per. I honestly think it was a career year for him, and will only avg. 16 goals for the next 3 years. Lets not pay him for last years performance but what we EXPECT him to do in the coming years

  37. avatar billy says:

it took this guy until 26 to play a full season in NHL and some people want to give this guy 3 mil a year?

Just because we have cap room doesnt mean we have to be stupid about it. Moulsons contract should not exceed 2 mil this year, if he repeats a 25-30 goal year then we can talk. But with 2 kirils and nino, and martin on their way, its not like moulson has any leverage, theres lots of poeple to replace him. Moulson showed some good grit in front of net, but hes not fast and a lot of times he was down on 3rd line.
Should we keep him? definitely but he does not deserve more than 2 mill per yet.
i’d give him a 2 year deal for 4.5 (2, 2,5), so that he does get a raise next year if he does well, but lets be logical here guys.

  38. avatar JSExpress says:

I think Mouls is great for the team, but I’d be leery of throwing $2MM to $3MM at him after one 30 goal season (see: Jason Blake). I hope that we’re able to avoid arbitration, but within reason.

  39. avatar Pete says:

a 1-year deal will mean he’ll be gone (UFA) next season.

I think the 3/$10M deal is the best way to go. Even if he’s Bill Muckalt, he’ll still get us to the cap floor over the next two years..

  40. avatar hathead68 says:

    3yr, 2mil per

  41. avatar Merrick says:

One year does not a career make. Three million per year seems a bit insane from my perspective.

Instead, three years @ $3 – 3.5 million total be very generous. It’s a lot more than we gave our supposed Selke Award guy, Frans Nielsen, and if MM shows this year was not a fluke, they can always renegotiate an extension before the final year.

  42. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

What the hell else do you want Matt to do. he was our leading scorer!!! I don’t see how you guys want to pay 3rd and 4th liners via free agency all this big money, but you don’t want to pay our very own talent what he rightfully deserves because, why, he may not score 30 goals again?? That is true for any player in the N.H.L. Stop playing around, we love him, he loves us, GET IT DONE!!!!

  43. avatar Brian G says:

1 year for 1.3 mil …let’s see him do this again

  44. avatar James says:

3 yrs at $2.5-3.0M per, everybody wins.

  45. avatar Giaco says:

Matty Ice deserves a nice raise but lets not go crazy. It was one year. 3 yrs/9M

ps anyone enlighten me on the salo story. did they really rip him up that bad?

  46. avatar shlo says:

Give him a deal plus incentives to make sure it was not a one year performance. If he produces he gets what he deserves. A consistent 30 goal scorer is worth a lot of money today. 2 mil a year with bonuses should seal a deal.
They have the cap space and they must spend the money anyway. Make him happy.

  47. avatar jimfromStjames says:

Give him a one years based on the 30 Goal scorer, if he hits 30 again, he’s no flash in the pan. then give him a multi-year deal.

Stranger things have happened that a guy scores 30 and never does it again, think, he won’t be a secret anymore, team will focus on him more, can he fight through it??

  48. avatar WM says:

Right on, Erika – you are the voice of reason.

  49. avatar Jtonelli says:

well said, Orange and Blue #18. Unfortnately, I don’t believe that Wang will spend a dime more than he has to anymore. He may have intentions of investing in his team at one time, but not anymre. Sad.

  50. avatar Jtonelli says:

Hey, Merrick, #24, how much do NBA teams pay for scorers that only average 2.5 pts. per game. c’mon, ya gotta pay this guy correctly…..but don’t count on it

  51. avatar jmo16 says:

Matt will probably win big in arbitration, just by comparing him to the ever-more ‘Invisible” Trent Hunter @ $2M per.
    GP 82 vs. 61
    G 30 vs. 11
    A 18 vs. 17
    Pt 48 vs. 28
    +/–1 vs 3
    PIM16 vs. 18
    PPG 8 vs. 3
    SH 0 vs. 0
    GW 5 vs. 1
    Shots 208 vs. 159
    Shoot% 14.4 vs. 6.9
I don’t see how Garth can argue HIS own contract to TH. I agree with others…pointing out the flaws & shortcomings in an arbitration never leaves a pleasant taste behind. Instead, Garth should just offer him something around $2M+ for 2-3 yrs. This guy wasn’t a fluke. WE HAVE TO SPEND SOME $$$. There’s no need to nickle & dime. Garth has more important things to attend to other than this. MM is personal friends with JT & his brother AND as much involved as a face of the team in the community. No way to treat a “core” guy. Will they do this to OK, JB or JT when the time comes? Did they even give MM a qualifier?

Matt might get $2.5 and only

  52. avatar Isle Be Damned says:

I really appreciate what MM did last year, but I gotta say I’m still waiting for the shoe to drop. I say give him a 2 year 3-3.5 million dollar deal and call it a day. If he happens to put up 2 more 25+ goal seasons then you pay him accordingly. I’m just really concerned that last year was just a fluke.

  53. avatar Kaszycki's Krew says:

If we have determined he is the second coming of Mark Lawrence (read your Islanders history books boys and girls if you don’t know who he is) – then one year deal to have him prove it again…..we will have the cap room to sign him in March….and if he won’t sign – trading him is an option.

If you think he is the next perennial 30 goal guy – go 3 to 4 years with him. Why screw around? He is recently married and stability might be an asset we can give him. He is on a team where he meshes – and can grow during his 4 year deal to be a playoff team that makes a ton of noise and perhaps wins it all? If his agent is not a “village idiot” – then go three years and in two years – give him an extension when he proves he is the real deal. Show the world that if you come to NYI and make it – you are part of the family and verifies the rebuild strategy (not all by itself – but as part of the strategy)

  54. avatar michele says:

I like moulson. Would love to see him with the team for 2-4 years. But lets be realistic. At 25 years of age, after being in the ahl. finally gets a chance. scores big in one season. I like to see what he can do in year two without giving him big bucks. Personally, I don’t think he can duplicate it. I see him signing for one year at 1.5 mil.

  55. avatar Rob (in Pgh) says:

@jmo16: If they didn’t tender a qualifying offer he would be an UFA right now. So… yes, they did.

  56. avatar steve from jersey says:

We all love matt he’s got good hands and is willing to pay the price that being said 2- 3 years at 2 to 2.5 is the way to go. Just cuz the isles have room doesn’t mean they should throw money around what does that say to all the other guys that are up for rfa status next year. It’ll probably be settled before the arbitration I’m not even worried about this.

  57. avatar Kevin says:

The Isles should make a moderate offer, like 3 yrs 5.9 mil w/ a decent signing bonus. The Isles hold all the cards here. He’s had one good year. The Isles gave him a chance when no other team would. The Isles have every right to take advantage of the CBA in this case. I can’t imagine Moulson would be stupid enough to sit out a whole year.

  58. avatar Michael says:

Give a 1.25 mil deal with incentives for scoring 25, 30,and 35 goals. If he can score 25 he gets 500k, if he scores 30 an extra 500k, 35 goals, give him an extra 750k,,, just my thoughts.

  59. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

i think he definately is resign but i dont thinks it safe to call him 30g scorer. i would be shocked if he repeats that. I hope im wrong. Dont forget trent hunter won co rookie of the year and it was all downhill from there.

Be a bit more fair to Trent, He has better shot and hits more than Moulson.

  60. avatar Jim says:

Good player, nice guy. Lock ‘em up with a 3 or 4 year deal, nothing riskier than that. Anywhere between 3 and 4 mil sounds pretty fair, plus bonuses.

  61. avatar Hock says:

Doesn’t seem to be a fluke. The guy has good hockey sense and a good attitude, too. Sign him up and settle on a fair figure. Incentives might be the way to go if they want to ensure he’s the real deal.

  62. avatar Jesse says:

CB-Doesn’t the club have the ability to walk away from any award over approx. 1 million a year? What would it take for the Isles to walk?

  63. avatar Ethan K says:

I don’t bank on him scoring 30 goals again, but it’s definitely possible. He’s a good player, a good person, and he likes being here. The fact that they had him make an appearance at the draft party tells me they want him around for a while.

  64. With Witt gone, has the best hair on the team. I say “lock” him up for 3 years. (I just made myself gag).

  65. avatar jimisles says:

People on hear saying only $1.2-$1.3 for someone who scored 30 goals?????

This kid gets at least $2.5 easily!!!!!!

  66. avatar Pete says:

I’m not sure I understand the penny-pinching mentality around here. We have $10M that Wang is “forced” to spend. Snow already indicated that it’s going to players already tendered (ie..not Kovalchuk).

Moulson will be the biggest recipient of this “largesse”, whether or not it’s what he deserves.

We’ve already seen 15-goal scoring UFA’s indicate they want nothing to do with LI, even if we have a one-year-wonder in the 30-goal Moulson, the fact that he likes LI will get him the “Trent Hunter treatment.”

  67. avatar Manhattan Mike says:

well you’ve got 10 million to play with. Sign the guy and do something good for once this offseason.

  68. avatar jmo16 says:

    Thanks Rob(pgh)
I remember trent’s rookie season. Berard’s, as well. Matt, however isn’t a rookie. I’m not suggesting to offer him $100M/17 yrs (haha-good luck Lou) but to put him through the arbitration process isn’t the nicest thing. Why not get slightly more creative? Incentives, multi-year extension based on performance/point totals. Like the comparitive #’s suggest, he’s worthy of at least $2M on the Isles roster and I bet Garth didn’t offer as much. We’ll wait & see, I guess. I hope this doesn’t tarnish things. Garth & CW have displayed hard-line tactics with others (bergenheim/comeau). Ever wonder perhaps why Sean didn’t give 110% all the time? Think he wants to be a marginal player?

  69. avatar Steve from Jersey says:

Once the salaries from zenon and Doug Weight are announced that’ll lower the ten million or wtv it is we need to reach the cap floor. Want Garth to be a laughing stock then I guess we could give a one time practically a rookie 30 goal scorer 4 mil, but the smart thing to do is give him a decent raise and for 2 years maybe 3 if there that confident in him. It’s just business, and heck I think the guy is at least gonna be a consistent 20 goal scorer, but if he sticks between 25 and 35 then thats even better.

  70. avatar mht says:

1 year,$1.25-1.5 million. If he is having another solid season a 3 year deal there after.

  71. avatar Vas says:

    3 years for 7 mil!

  72. avatar mht says:

Followup to my last post Brandon Dubinsky gets that amount, and he would be a good comparable.

  73. avatar Steve Webb says:

pay the man, not like they are using the money anywhere else. give him 2 at 2.6 or lower or 3 at 2

  74. avatar PTA says:

Still not sure how they intend to get to the cap floor. If we pay the players we have, we still don’t come close.

  75. avatar ny711ot says:

    CB
Any idea what the isles initial rejected offer was to bring them to arbitration? Guarantee they lose this one. Which leads me to ask ‘ why even bother’. The guy is going to deservedly get 2 mm+. Why go through this really unhealthy process? How binding is the decision?

  76. avatar Warren says:

Hey fans give it to him . He’s worth it he can even be a future Con Smyth winner when we make it to the finals one year soon. So give a multi-year . Maybe we can give the “C” or an “A” for his sweater. So I say give that multi-year to him.

  77. avatar JKP on LI says:

Definitely go multi-year. Worst case, we overpay him for some 20 goal seasons.

If we don’t go multi-year, watch him repeat his performance and then bolt as a UFA.

  78. avatar Scrambo says:

Giaca, Salo got ripped bad enough to make him cry during his hearing.

  79. avatar Chris in DC says:

I agree with Michele (54); he had a career year after putting in his dues and then some in the AHL. But I don’t think one season warrants a 4-5 year deal. Shorter range deal; make sure he’s not a one-hit wonder.

  80. avatar Russel Ginart says:

Again we use the “salo” word! Man enough Im getting nightmares every time some uses that word.LOL

  81. avatar On Edge says:

I have to laugh at some of the offers here. 5 years 10 million??? 3 million a year??? I swear I let him walk for that.

This guy was a career AHL player until last year.

Offer him one at 1.75 or two at 3.65 million. Absolute tops. Not a penny more.

He had a great season but he has to show me more that he is more than a one season 30 goal scorer.

  82. avatar DMac in ROI says:

    I can’t believe 1m to 1.5m is fair
this guy out scored all our supposed
best players with only a fraction of the ice time and lot less on the pp
he deserves at least 2.5m for 2yrs

  83. avatar Rish31 says:

Here’s a guy who has scratched and clawed for years to get a chance. He made the most of it. He’s earned a multiyear 3-4 years at 2-3 mil per in my opinion.

  84. avatar CJ says:

While Matt Moulson is a great guy and a GOOD (not great) player, let’s not make the mistake of overpaying this guy.

A deal at the same annual amount as Trent Hunter (or slightly higher) is fair. 2-2.25 M per is MORE THAN ENOUGH for this guy.

He’s still unproven in my eyes.

One year does not make a player.

I’m not sure how UFA/RFA works, but if the Isles can work a 1 year deal where he’s still an RFA (I doubt this is possible) that’s what I do. Pay him handsomely for 1 year and tell him “show us you can do it again”.

At that point, a bigger pay day is warranted.

  85. avatar jimisles says:

Where are you guys getting these low numbers from??????

I agree with DMac and Vas with their amounts. If I wasn’t lazy I’d look up the salarys of the other players who put up 30+ goals and see what they make.

  86. avatar isles72 says:

is anyone else like me ?

you love Moulson , but dont want him to get in the way of a young lw’er in year 2 or 3 of any contract he’d sign with us ?

  87. avatar Gchnyc says:

some people throw around millions like its 100k.
He’s worth double his salary last year.
maybe 2mil per but thats pushing it.
ONly reason i’d allow 2mil is b’c trent is making 2mil and in my mind he’s not worth league minimum (Trent)
But 3yrs 6mil would be my max offer.

  88. avatar Darren says:

That’s right all lets haggle w/ this guy, tick him off,and watch the 35-40 goal guy walk next year! Its a business and the Isles can’t attract ANYONE to play here and this is EXACTLY why!!!They’re friggn’ cheap. So what if we overpay a bit.We have the cap space!!!Lock him up for @ least 2yrs minimum.Heck stop taking care of the players that you think should be good and reward the ones that are!!

  89. avatar thepolishprince says:

    35 – 40 goals really?

  90. avatar znatokhokkeya says:

Mr. Wang, please don’t be cheap – sign the guy

  91. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Gordo and Snow have been singing his praises, and taking credit for discovering a hidden gem … Now they have to pay him what he’s worth… Unless they feel they didn’t do their job, and he really isn’t that good.

That’s the problem with doing a good job and finding a hidden gem like Matt … You have to pay him … and he deserves a big raise.

The Isles need to reach the cap floor, and he’s good enough reason to pay out some bucks.

  92. avatar geduffer says:

2 years at 1.25-1.5 million per would be a nice raise and would be fair for a guy who has one full NHL season. Then he’d be in line for a big payday if he duplicates the first season. It’s a good thing that the GM and coach have a higher regard for Hunter than most of the posters who think they know what makes a good player, but haven’t a clue.

  93. avatar goislesgo105 says:

I really like MM. He goes to the net, has size, wants to be here, is best friends with JT and does something that all of the wunderkind Isles that so many of the posters on this blog are so enamored with don’t do; SCORE GOALS!!! Interesting that Tambellini was signed the first day by Vancouver and Bergy is still available. This team will never be a playoff team until they lower their goals against and improve their PK and PP results.

  94. avatar Gchnyc says:

He should take 1.25 mil per and give the rest to Tavares b’c im sure if it wasnt for tavares he’d still be rotting in the ahl.
If anything throw the extra mil a yr on to tavares contract in the coming years.
I like matty but w/o tavares he wasnt anybody… also the same production on the ice w/o tavares on the same line.
Dont be greedy matt. Your not worth 3mil a yr yet.

  95. avatar adam m says:

    10-years-100 mill lol yea!

  96. avatar Will C. says:

In REALITY he is a 20 goal guy with way more ice time because we stunk. He is worth a 3yr 4.5m. That is what he should get, however if an arbitrator sees Sean Avery making 4mill, he may get a 2-3mill per.

  97. avatar mtrico says:

I don’t see how you can possibly give this guy anything beyond a two year deal.

  98. avatar mht says:

Some of these posters throw around money as if it were Monopoly money.Revisit history for one moment:In the 1984-85 season Warren Young scored 40 goals playing along Mario Lemieux>{1984-85 was Lemieux’s rookie season.]The next season after that he scored 22 goals.the year after that 8 goals, and then nothing.I like and admire Matt Moulson, and his tenacity. I previously posted that a $1.25-$1.5 one year contract is in order. You have to establish a precedent for others. If he produces again, then a multi year contract is in order. Also what do you pay Frans Nielsen for his contributions?

  99. avatar Eric says:

Not sure why some people insist he wasn’t anything without Tavares. He played mostly with Tavares but he also moved around too. The guy potted 30 goals, I could care less about where he was drafted or how long it took him to break out. He got a terrific chance to play regularly and produced. 3-4 years between $2-$2.5 million per sounds about right. If Colby Armstrong who’s roughly the same age can get 3 yrs for $9 million($3 million/year) after a 15 goal campaign than Moulson will get at least that per year in arbitration. Isles72, it must just be you, you pay guys who produce and don’t worry about prospects who may or may not pan out. It sends the right message, produce and we’ll pay.

  100. avatar Blizzard says:

this guy potted 30 goals on a team where the best offensive talent is still in its infancy. I wouldn’t overpay him as its just one season. However I am a believer in Moulson. He should net Armstrong money IMO.

  101. avatar Eric says:

It doesn’t matter what we think he should net, it matters what the market is. He can walk in and point to the contracts of guys like Armstrong and demand money in that neighborhood since he produced more. He turns 27 this season which means he’ll be a UFA after this year. If he pots another 30 goals he’ll get way more than the $2-$2.5 million per year that I propose. There is always a risk in handing out contracts, but if you believe the guy is legit, and by all accounts the Isles believe Moulson is, than you take that chance.

  102. avatar dman says:

they should trade him. he’s gonna be a ufa next year. if he has a great season he’ll cost too much after that. if we sign him long term then he’ll stop trying like so many do after a long term contract. it’s really a no win situation. trade him.

  103. avatar Bob says:

Pay Moulson what he wants for 1 year. It’ll be the Isles big free agent signing of the summer and help them reach the cap floor. If mid season Moulson looks like he’s in for another 30 goal season, offer him an extension then.

  104. avatar ny711ot says:

Trade him? Not worth it? Do you realize what this team would have been like last year without him? And if he continues to perform do you realize what they can be with him? He’s no fluke; 30 may not happen again but only because of reduced icetime. Many of you write like we have a ton of 20 goal scorers. I don’t even think its a gamble. He’s 6 2, he has the fastest release on the team, but he scores because he is big enough and fearless enough to pay the price. The guy has a knack around the net and his goals were earned. Frankly regardless of whether he nets 30 again he is a 2 mm dollar player with presence, whom I would give a 2 year deal. Ideally this gives the flexibility of re-signing or letting him walk as a ufa in his second year. If this was the qualifier from the Isles I can understand why they went to arbitration. If it wasn’t its another case of pennywise and pound foolish.

  105. avatar ny711ot says:

Mht…a Warren Young comparison.?????.cmon!.I didn’t realize Mario was feeding him the puck last year and that’s why he produced. Btw the 80 final is on nhl network right now…he wasn’t in philly yet but Moulson plays the game just like another scrap heap player; Tim Kerr.

  106. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

Give him a good 1-2 year deal with incentives.

  107. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

A young thirty goal scorer is worth 5 mil in this N.H L market. Okay, if you think he may not be a 30 goal man next year, he is worth min. 2.5 mil. Why stomp on his ego? He was great for us last year, and is an all around great guy. I do not want him or the rest of our decent talent to get disillusioned by the way this team does business. Geez, show him the money, the kid is getting married–he will most definately raise a family on Long Island. Good P.R, you know what that is don’t you Isles management? Yeah right!

  108. avatar Xavier says:

isles paid mike comrie $4mil a year; so it wouldn’t be crazy to see $3mil for moulson. But a Hunter type deal would be perfect for player and team

  109. avatar bonemurry says:

he has jason blake written all over him

  110. avatar Islebethere4u says:

I don’t want to throw numbers around, it wouldn’t be fair. But be fair and give him what a 30 goal scorer deserves. Don’t try to beat him up. Keep your players playing for you. Its not just what have you done for me lately, its have you been doing it for a while and are you showing signs that you can’t keep it up. Otherwise show him the love!

  111. avatar ralf says:

paying Moulson more than 1.5 million would be absurd imo.

  112. avatar MikeD says:

Why are people talking about a contract under $2MM? I heard $4MM comparables being thrown around 2 weeks ago.
