POINT BLANK VIDEO: KIRILL PETROV
With assistance from interpreter Kirill Kabanov

by admin on July 8th, 2010 at 1:12 am

Meet Kirill Petrov. This is where he gives his word he’ll play in Bridgeport, no matter what. My thanks to Mr. Kabanov for co-hosting. Excuse the informality. The Emmy will have to wait. Comments related to this post are invited.

Good news. We need his talent and size to stick around and develop right.

  2. avatar bobice says:

thats gonna be one dirty line down the road with brock centering

  3. avatar goislesgo105 says:

    Petrov looks BIG!!

  4. avatar jamal says:

I really hope we sign both of them to entry level deals. wherever petrov ends up kabanov should be his teammate, his roommate, and his translator. KP would be lost without KK’s help in north america and they already seem like great friends. We’re going to have the most dynamic offense in the league in a few years with KO,JT,Moulson,Schremp,Bailey,Nino, and the 2 Kirills

  5. avatar Shremp Co 13 says:

    looks like a bull

  6. avatar David says:

As probably one of few here who actually is Russian, I can say that that was a good and funny interview, especially the part at the end where CB asked Petrov about his thoughts on playing his first scrimmage, and seeing the fans. He was like, what do I say? Kabanov is like tell them you’re excited and very happy to be here, etc lol. I actually really love Kabanov’s personality seems like a great guy.

  7. avatar BC says:

The seemed to have a lot of chemistry between the two so I would love to see them on a line together in the future. In the 2 interviews I saw of Petrov today, he reiterated that he would play in Bridgeport next season, so I for one take his word over a Russian blogger.
On Kabanov, and correct me if I am wrong Cb, he seemed to be a passionate kid who was excited to be in the Islanders organization. He also doesn’t seem to come across as the “punk” label he has been given, just a kid who overstepped his boundaries a little bit. His interviews after the draft seem to show he realized he made mistakes so I don’t fans need to worry about him being a distraction on the team.

  8. avatar JKP on LI says:

Kabanov looks like a character, which I’m enjoying so far. Hopefully he keeps it under control.

  9. avatar isles316 says:

That was definitely a nice thing to watch. Good to see Kabanov showing leadership if you will since he knows the language helping out Petrov.

  10. avatar walter says:

Petrov may make the team out of camp

  11. avatar Alex says:

haha these two r going to b fun to watch on and off the ice for years to come!

  12. avatar Alex says:

    isles bash brothers! lol

  13. avatar Examiner says:

Do I smell a future segment to supplant the good old days of the Heals and Flats show? No, probably not, but still great to watch. Hope they continue to grow together, develop in the system, and flourish on the same line in the bigs.

  14. avatar 2Bit says:

hahaha it would be awesome if they became the next Heals and Flats. They both seem like funny characters. Petrov seems like an intense dude sometimes though.

    Excited to see them play!

  15. avatar JJ says:

This is how you develop chemistry among a team. Get some 18 year olds to hang out and get to know one another and grow with one another.

    I like it.

  16. avatar Alex says:

I think the informality of this interview is great! I think people often forget how young these guys really are. Interviews like this keep things down to earth.

Petrov is a big boy! Should really be able to handle himself once he adjust to this level. Kabanov needs to fill out a bit, but again…he’s 17. At 17 I think I had just reached 6′ tall, but still hadn’t started to fill out. I was probably only about 140lbs. Soon after I turned 18 I was around 165. At that age, my frame looked very similar.

  17. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Episode one of the “KIRILL BOTTS SHOW”. I hear it is the most popular show in Siberia and Oyster Bay.

Guys seem like fun. Petrov for sure has an NHL body and Kabanov should be ready soon enough. I found Botta’s fanhouse article on Kabanov from the start of the season. He has a good shot at being on the opening night roster too.

I’d rather see 2 or 3 of Petrov, Martin, Kabanov, JJ, & Niederetter make the squad then more D list FA’s.

  18. This was GREAT! Thanks CB…again my feelings are that Kabanov is going to be one hell of an Islander. He seems to have a personality that fits. I hope he develops, along with some strength and all that. but wow I can’t wait for these guys to crack the lineup.

Petrov definitely does seem inTENSE! I hope his play is the same. Having these guys grow together should be a good thing I hope. It’d probably help if they had you know…another solid Russian vet to also guide them along.

Can’t wait for Saturday (hoping no more bad news between then and now)!

  19. avatar Magnus says:

I’m still not convinced he’ll stay if he’s sent down to Bridgeport. It’s one thing to say in front of a cam, another to actually do when they show some Rubles from mother Russia.

  20. avatar Dan says:

that was actually really fun to watch. i laughed a little in my head thinking that maybe kabanov was just saying what he thought we wanted to hear instead of what petrov was actually saying, but i have no doubt that thats not the case. i hope these two get a chance to play and live together in the near future and develop that off ice chemistry that will eventually translate to them playing well together. it would be amazing if both flourished and could play on either side of tavares.

  21. avatar Kevin says:

Great job getting that interview CB. Very excited about the two Kirill’s. I wonder what Kabanov’s options are? Can he, (like A.Klementyev last year)play in Bridgeport this yr? It seems we should try our best to keep the Two Kirill’s together although I’m hoping Petrov makes the team out of camp & I can’t imagine Kabanov making the team in October.

  22. avatar Josh says:

Chris, Don Cherry would weep at your choice of attire. A hoodie?

Shirt and tie: Look smart, feel smart. ;)

  23. avatar BillyBC says:

I have a good feeling about these guys! Great interview and both seem like good people! Good luck to both, look forward too seeing them on the ice!

  24. avatar pnut says:

Glad to see them working hard on the ice (i saw on isles TV) and that they are characters off the ice too. If Petrov needs to be in B’port for a year then so be it. We have enough prospects and players that we don’t need to rush him. But if he can make the pro squad all the best. I think his skills are already there, the stick handling and shot. But we shall see.
Once again thanks to CB for getting right in there.

  25. avatar onesinceforty says:

I actually really like the way Kabanov comes off. He seems very likeable. Let’s hope the rest of the league regrets letting us have him. It also sounded like Danny Flynn has a good relationship with him.

  26. avatar purify says:

love the videosegments on ipb. great job! after all is said and done regarding this never dull franchise nothing makes me happier then to see two young kids with bright futures with kid like excitement on there face. cb how does the two krills like n america? is it what they tought it would be? atmosphere, food, life style and have they een enough of long island to get a real feel for what a great place it is especially when there young and have money? big ups to kabanov for bonding with petrov to ease his transition, no selfish and good team work.

  27. avatar Ari From Long Island says:

Lol, for those of you that don’t speak Russian, it is a pity. At the end when CB asked Petrov for his thoughts on the upcoming scrimmage and playing in front of the fans for the first time, Petrov had no idea what to say and Kabanov just told him to say that he is excited to be a part of the Islanders organization and Petrov was like, yes of course, tell them I said that, fine. These two are going to become great friends.

  28. avatar Jim Clark says:

On the NHL page for Petrov, he is listed at 198 pounds. On his wiki pge he is listed at 218 pounds. I think I am going to like Kabenov, he does well. Petrov does pretty good under the circumstances and I will judge him on his own behavior, not what others did.

  29. avatar Angry Bill says:

Awesome job CB! They both seems like great kids. Can’t wait to see them play this Saturday. Please keep more of those videos coming.

  30. avatar thepolishprince says:

Petrov looks a lot bigger than the pics I have seen of him. In all the others he looks like a chubby kid but in the interview he looks built well enough to stand up to NA hockey competition. Hope he has a great camp in September.

  31. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

CHEMISTRY is the name of the game. I hope these two stick together on and off the ice. Just imagine how different the experience would be without each other for them. Kabby seems like a heckuva personality in a great way. Seems like he may have both skill and personality going for him. Can’t wait to see what they can do on the ice at this level. LET’S GO ISLANDERS!

  32. avatar jon says:

i’m really liking Kabanov. He seems like a good kid that just needs to mature.

CB – What did you think of Kabanov from your conversations?

  33. avatar IslesInPA says:

I get the feeling I’m REALLY going to enjoy Kabanov as an Islander..the kid has personality..

  34. avatar Healy says:

Wish I could speak Russian. Anyone else find it amusing that the 17 year old kid who is supposed to have this bad attitude is advising the 20 year old the right things to say? Hope these guys develop into superstars. And I agree, Petrov looks pretty solid in terms of stature. Wish I could watch the scrimmage this saturday.

  35. avatar Mikey Islanders says:

Man, that’s a big boy. I’m thinking he’s playing for the Isles come opening night.

  36. avatar The new isles gm says:

Excuse me if I’m playing Scott Gordon here for a second but I’d really like to see Neilson center the Kirill’s…. Frans will def provide the two way hockey the Kirill’s need to open up their offensive game. He ‘ll allow them to take some risks and overall I think it’s a healthy balance of skill, respnsibility, size, communication and attitude. Once again, thanks Janks for believing in the Kirill’s.

  37. avatar jimfromStjames says:

    Awesome as always CB!

This is not a jab, but is it possible that the Kirill’s look so big because CB is not so big?

I mean, he looks like he could crush you, if he wanted.

  38. avatar Seth says:

for the first time in a long time, we have a list of good prospects. lets hope most of them pan out including these two.

  39. avatar jimfromStjames says:

@The new isles gm, good though!, I’d bet Franz knows a little russian too. We could wind up with lines 1A and 1B

  40. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

CB, how tall are you because KP had at least 3 inches on you. That boy ate his Russian Wheaties as a kid. Before I get super excited about either one of these guys I would like to see them on the ice first. I am sure they are worth the hype but being a fan of this organization has taught me not to set myself up for disappointment.

  41. avatar Manhattan Mike says:

hahaha CB – Did you jog there?

  42. avatar Hockey1919 says:

The Russian version of the Heals and Flats show.

  43. Kabanov is a cheating bastard! :) On the last question he abandon his translator duties and become a PR manager. I love those guys. Hope they’ll grow up into the most exciting duo on ice for the Islanders.

  44. avatar boss15 says:

Funny interview, those two couldn’t have more different personalities but that is probably a good thing. CB said how tall he was back in the Gudbranson interview, I think it was 5’11″.
KP is a beast, I wish there was more video of him playing.

  45. avatar Lance79 says:

If Petrov does make the team in the fall, he’s going to need someone on the team to mentor/translate for him – I think that means Snow should definitely think of nabbing either Frolov or Ponikarovsky. At this point we have to anyway for cap floor considerations.

Adding Petrov, Nino and KK to a lineup with JT, KO, Bailey, Nielsen, Comeau, Moulson and Schremp makes us one scary looking team – IF everything pans out.

KK and Petrov could pan out to be a poor man’s Kovalchuk and Malkin respectively. They certainly seem to have the size for it.

  46. avatar Manhattan Mike says:

It would be nice for 1 or both of these kids to make the squad. The Isles could use a rookie duo like this – as long as they are defensively responsible – i dont see why you cant let these 2 run wild.

  47. avatar Michael says:

I want to see what kind of skill set he has on Saturday night against some young speedy kids. I hope the Islanders test him and put him up against some toughness like Matt Martin. Hopefully with these prospects we have some sleepers hiding in the weeds ready to make a splash in the National League.

  48. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

I give Petrov a break. He is not use to media attention. He looks and sounds a liitle lost and shy, but that is ok. It’s only his second day on the Island. But Kabanov in a real piece of work. Funny and relaxed. Hillarious interviews. I wish you guys spoke Russian to fully enjoy this “translation”. Will see you Saturday.

  49. avatar orngfan says:

    kabanov is a character.

  50. avatar steven says:

I’m gonna bring a Russian flag Saturday nite.

  51. avatar Staten Islander says:

I love it…”two WILD and CRAAAAZZZZZY guys!” seriously, I hope these two make it and do a lot of damage for us. And CB, was it cold in there? It was like 100 degrees here with almost that much humidity yesterday, long sleeves?

  52. avatar CSKA says:

I speak Russian and I laughed when Petrov said the Coliseum is better than the arena in Kazan. And the Kazan Arena is one of the newest and biggest in Russia. He thinks our old Barn is state of the art. See? If the North American free agents won’t come here coz of the Mausoleum, we should be getting the young Russian kids over here.

  53. Great idea Steve! Lets give them warm Russian welcome to the Island. I will bring my daughter to the game on Saturday, she is 8 years old but she is well into it, which makes me very proud. :)

  54. avatar Law says:

Whoa, the Coliseum is better than the Kazan arena?! =P

  55. avatar sean b says:

kabanov has tons of personality. CB Id rather see something informal than something more formal. Gives you more perspective on who these kids are. sick stuff.

  56. avatar Honnold says:

Can’t ask much more of these guys attitudinally. Kabanov has already been more expressive than Ya$hin in all his miserable years with the Isles. This is the feel good story of the summer.

  57. avatar CIsle says:

Kabanov doing the interpretation thingy is impressive. That’s harder than some think. It’s often hard to find the words to sum things up. Not surprised his brother is an actor… those genes are obviousy here. Let’s just hope these boys can perform on the ice – all the personality in the world won’t mean a thing if they can’t.

  58. avatar ZZZZZ says:

Hey, the Isles should get another Russian, put him on a line with these two and call the line the RUSSIAN MOB LINE ! I like it !

  59. avatar Eric says:

im with #58. if we got kovalchuk, we could of called it the RUSSIAN power house or the the triple K line. isles r looking more promising every year. LETS GO ISLES!!!!!!!!

  60. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Both guys look like they have some good height … Petrov definitely has a big build … I think in the future they both can be a good 1-2 punch.

  61. avatar Barney Stinson says:

That was fun feel-good type of interview.

    Thanks, CB.

  62. avatar Isles 22 says:

Awsome piece CB keep it coming. I am going Saturday to see these kids for sure.

  63. avatar billy says:

very nice interview, looked like a lot of fun CB.

Petrov looks very solid physically and kabanov says he’s fast which is even more enticing.

I’ve also been extremely pleased with kabanov, i cant help but feel that he is going to be a special player, he seems like he has a great personality at a very young age.

  64. avatar IslesFaminFlorida says:

Awesome, they look great, PETROV looks huge in comparison to Kabanov, but damm the connections is great. I hope for many many goals together in the future.

  65. avatar James says:

Honestly, I hope those two are as entertaining on the ice as they are off of it. Great interview.

By the way, Kirill looks HUGE. The bigger Kirill, I mean.

  66. avatar Aaron says:

i love those 2 man. cant wait to watch them for years to come.

  67. avatar JT says:

Awesome. I’m excited to see how these guys develop. I think a big part of the Isles chances for future success depends on these guys. I was also surprised to see how strong Petrov looks.

  68. avatar AOH says:

I am really starting to like the idea of Kirill and Krill playing together.. Put a good center between them and watch out! I am hoping both make the big club this year. If not, at least see them together in the minors and on the same line. They will tear it up and be up here in no time. Oh, and someone needs to mention to Katie that their first names are not spelled the same.

  69. avatar LES says:

i hope they make the team soon we need them badly
